I’ve been playing the ele almost exclusively since BWE #1. I think i have maybe 40 hours max across all my other characters.

Honestly, we’re not as bad as people are making out. We have some bugged skills, and some bad traits, but thats about it.
Design wise, we’re actually great.

The biggest thing is that we are tough to learn to play well, and there isnt actually a ‘best sequence’ for every fight.

Honestly, once you’ve played it for a while you’ll see we arent that bad, and we’re most certainly the most fun class to play.

There are LOTS of ways to get perma Swiftness.

Getting Quick Glyphs and Inscription will give you perma swiftness if you cast it each time its up.

Getting two monk runes and two water runes, 20% CD on air skills, 20 points in arcane and staff 4 will give you perma swiftness.

The best movement i’ve found is D/D or S/D for RtL + the Glyphs + Inscription.

Clearly you dont get it. The only reward you get for PvP is the skins. That is it. Nothing else. Your stats stay the same, everything stays the same. Only looks change. Oh and titles.

PvE is much the same. The ‘best gear’ doesnt necessarily look the best. Thats why transmute stones are in the game.

Crossing the two would mean PvE’ers can look bad kitten in PvP and vice versa without actually doing any of it.

Where in the world I don’t get it? I exactly know what you are saying, and I don’t agree with you, that is all.
If I don’t agree with you that doesn’t means I don’t understand.

PvP and PvE end game is now all about getting skins, and that is bad thing.
PvP shouldn’t be like it, same as PvE. Anet says updates will come, I hope they will be good.

Only thing “I don’t get” is why you are so against skins being transmuted to other gears (PvP to PvE and vice-versa), your arguments are wrong and selfish.
PvE will not die because it, same as PvP. It will die only if this game is only about getting skins, which it is atm, and that is what is wrong in this game.

And it will not die because getting skins is easier in PvP, it will die because this game only has that (skins) to offer as it’s end game.

It’s Anet’s time to make us wrong, and get us end game we need.
Then you will see how childish is for you to be so against transmuting gears from PvP to PvE.

For me it seems like you live in a world you don’t give kitten about others, and also you don’t like to show out.

Actually i think you’ll find thats exactly what ArenaNet designed, and its MORE selfish for you to say “i want to be able to do X, Y and Z” than it is for me to say “well you cant because of these reasons”.

Anyway, back to the ACTUAL topic, personal insults aside.

You need to understand that this isnt just ‘my opinion’, this is the stance the ANet has most likely taken. I cant speak for them, but thats just how its made, and why most likely its made that way.

Skins ARE end game. It makes it more fun the whole way along if getting the stats needed to do endgame content doesnt take 9/10 of your game time grinding before you actually get to the fun stuff.

If you dont like that, you’re playing that wrong game. Thats how its is and imo thats SO much better than WoWs gearscore bullsh**.

You can show what you’ve achieved. Its actually shown when people look at you. Your dressup/colors/titles/achi points/map compete star/commander icon.

I think you’re misunderstanding his question. He wanted to allow spvp players to use their hard earned skins on boring looking over gear.

In my opinion I think they should allow spvp gear to be shown off more than just one tiny confined zone.

I get that, but as soon as you un-separate the two (i.e. allow pvp items to be used in PvE), you’re actually ‘favoring’ pvpers because you’re allowing their hard work to transfer over. If someone does 300 hours of PvP, and can then use those skins in PvE, they just bypassed the 300 hours someone did in PvE to get those same skins.

Now from a PvE’ers stand point, they’ll have to do 600 hours compared to the 300 the PvPer did to get skins in both. Its not fair, unless the PvE’ers could swap over too, which totally destroys the whole purpose of PvP.

Firegrab, Shocking Touch, Cone of Cold, Drakes Breath

All the above (and more on other classes) suffer from a ‘miss’ when using the Right Mouse Button when not aimed perfectly at the target. This is exacerbated while moving.

It’d be great if you stay on top of this thread unlike the last OP, best of luck!

Question – What kind of mitigating mechanic would you have?
- What time would it start?
- What time would it end?
- How do you fairly reward those people who cant play during the day, or maybe are from a different country but playing with a guild, or chosen that server?

Prime-time players, realise that prime-time means exactly that. The time of maximum prime (or, when most people are on).
That means things will be heating up with lots of people (generally max with queues)

Oddly enough there are these times aside from prime time…. and there isnt lots of people on then. But people still play.

So really its kinda your fault for not staying up late. no but really….
Should they reduce the amount of dungeons people can run in non-prime time hours?
Perhaps the pvp tourneys should be disabled?
No trading post either except primetime?

Really now.

A game work with millions of people keeps ticking over when you’ve gone to bed. Get used to it.
(and not its not unfair.. what did you lose? 6% chance for a crafting crit? infact its suddenly unfair for that server because they have a hundred places to defend, and the same amount of people to defend with.)

Trait re-work.

  • Flame Barrier: – Chance reduced to 10%, triggers in any attunement.
  • Internal Fire – Attacking in Fire increases your damage by 2% (stacks, max of 5 stacks) for 20 seconds.
  • Spell Slinger – 1 more stack of might to a total of 4
  • Burning Rage – Changed to ‘Each tick of [your] Burning has a 75% chance to apply 5 seconds of vulnerability’
  • Persisting flames Evaporation – Attacking a chilled enemy while in Fire has a 20% chance to grant you and nearby allies regeneration for 10 seconds. 30 sec ICD
  • Zepher’s Speed – stacks with swiftness
  • Grounded – Deal 10% more damage to Crippled foes.
  • Stone Splinters – Deal 10% more damage while in melee range
  • Strength of Stone – Take 10% less damage in Earth
  • Salt Stone Erosion – Attacking an enemy in earth while you have swiftness has a 40% chance to remove a random boon. 15sec ICD
  • Vital Striking – Deal 5% more damage If an enemy has regeneration, and 20% chance to steal it if attuned to water.
  • Soothing Wave Extinguish – Attacking a burning enemy(must be your burn) while attuned to water inflicts 2 sec of weakness.
    Windborne Dagger – Cast times are reduced by 20% while wielding a dagger

This’ll increase power and defense a little, increase trait synergy and help make attunement swapping more meaningful

oh and fix the bugs.

This wont happen, and for a good reason.

As soon as you can bring ‘sPvP’ items into PvE/WvW, then all the PvEers will want to be able to bring their gear into sPvP. After all, they worked hard to get it, just like PvPers, why should PvPers be allowed to look cool in PvE, and not the other way round?

They cant do that because that would destroy the whole reason for PvP ranks ect in the first place (the looks).

They always will keep them very separate.

Alot of the endgame in PvE is also getting looks too, so that kind kills endgame PvE if you already have it in PvP.

Its fine how it is now imo, you have to work at one or the other to actually get anywhere, you cant bypass it.

How much fun do you really think the night crew had (PvE’ing keeps….woooo.)

If a whole map is one colour, i look at that and say, look at all the opportunities.

The ‘winning’ server doesnt actually matter. Everyone is winning (world bonus’).

You’re all thinking that your $60/$150 went towards exactly what you are playing huh?

Well actually it probably went to the salaries of everyone who was working on the game, not just to Jon to work on the one aspect you FEEL is lacking.

Also right now they are working on bugs which affect people FAR MORE than zergs or what have you.

They are working on crashes, things that block progress, and blatent missing audio files etc.

Now im not saying that they are perfect, no game company ever is.

But lets put this in perspective.

If they gave everyone everything they wanted (like alot you guys seem to want) this game would be utter trash.

ALSO – i bet the blog is going to be much more than “we’re working on stuff”, given the time its taking to release.

Seriously chill out. The game isnt half as bad as many of you are making it out to be, and the blog isnt as important as bugs that need attention.

If you’re really unhappy, go play kung fu panda online, and come back when they have fixed it. You’re not paying monthlies.

Didnt think so.

All classes are being thought about evenly, and no preference is being given to one or another, and none are being forgotten or ignored.

Balance issues are never going to be ‘quick fixed’, because there is this thing called meta. If you dont know what it is google it. Jon has stated they want to see how things play out before making changes.
Its more than likely that changes made to classes are in internal testing right now. They may not come out for a few weeks or even a month or two.

Let them decide what is a priority.

if your gear is all power, precision and crit go for vitality and toughness.

yeah i give u credit for effort, but your so called ’’guide’’ is flawed. very much flawed.

lets say a person decided to to CoE only. because all other skins are too ugly for that person. cos, hey why the heck not. and by your ’’pro’’ guide u need toughness and vitality. well guess what hotshot… there ISNT any gear in that place with those stats

i suggest u give up writing your ’’guides’’ because ure just wasting time for ppl who actually thing your ’’guide’’ will be helpful.

@Rophus – Sorry that was a bug. I’ve updated it with the GW2DB tooltip, so it’ll be updated as they update.

I also just added Glyph of Renewal in now. I wanted to test the new changes (effects around target instead of caster). Also i have never, ever used it in earth. I’ve never had three allies that are downed at the same time near me. Hell i seldom ever have two that arent in the process of getting finished.

Between the Betas and release i’ve got almost 300 hours on my ele.

I pay attention to your posts, as you clearly know your business. However, you should consider that the sheer volume of time you have put into this overly complex class may render your opinion somewhat less useful for players who are more casual. I submit that the vast majority of players would be more effective playing almost any other class, in almost any situation.

It’s not like there’s some pot of gold at the end of the elementalist learning curve. I think it’s more of a low floor than a high ceiling.

Thats a totally valid point, and honestly, I agree.

Unfortunately, the fix to make it easier for more casual players would probably result in good players (of which im probably not) being too powerful.

That said, i think reworking the traits to be more effective is probably the best option at the moment….especially something in earth to help us take less damage (Strength of Stone = 10% reduced damage?)

Honestly, you’ll have trouble at high levels going D/D in dungeons unless you spec condi-damage/toughness/vit (which is hard to gear for)

In terms of ‘maximising damage’ then you don’t need to dance per-say, but you do need to be swapping to maximise your ability to access powerful abilities. For example you might start in Water and spam Vapor Blade, swap to Fire, do the burst, swap to Earth and lay down lots of bleeds etc etc.

Honestly, you’re on the right track, just keep playing.

Regarding the fanboy thing, it’s hard to please everyone. MMOs now have such a broad player-base that it’s next to impossible. Everyone has different wants and desires, time constraints, mentalities, etc.

I am fairly good at video games, but I completely empathize with my friend who tries her hardest to play and ends up saying—a lot, actually—“[…] because I suck at this game,” or, “[…] because I suck at video games.”

Everyone has their own valid opinion, but, at the very least, be open to understanding where others are coming from. It’s the internet, so that person who wants things to be less grindy might just be a single mother or father of two with two jobs and not a lot of time.

Of course… that person also might be a complete brat, but it’s nicer to ignore that fact.

Are the skins worth it?
You can preview them in Lions Arch, and imo YES!

Whats with this anti-farming diminishing returns BS?
Speed farming actually hurts they economy and the game.
The few who can do this over and over and over benefit with lots of exp, gold, items and tokens.
The items get sold and these people make lots of cash.
As this gets shared the ‘less profitable routes’ dont get used because who wants to do a 40 minute run when you can do a 15.

The biggest hurt however is the lowered ‘valve’ of the armor and weapons. Because it only takes 15 speed runs of a dungeon to get your skins, everyone and their dog will get them in no time, and it means less.

For those that played wow here is an example;
Remember the Blades of Azzinoth? When someone had both, its was something of a miracle and people would crowd around said people. Now imagine what they are worth if you could Speed run the BT, and gather tokens to buy them with. Next to nothing. They’re cool still but it means less.

What diminishing returns does is help stop this ‘grind’ and encourages people to have fun and try other routes (if its exp etc you want)
If you really really want to grind out the items you can still run the quickest route, but if you want exp gold etc, its actually better overall to do different routes.
If you find it fun to run the same stuff over and over and over…… then you’re actually the minority, and you still can, its just not as rewarding.

Why dont i get epic drops?
Remembering that rewards are being adjusted… what GW2 has done is removed the RNG drop for good items. Rather than getting a random idem that you might not need, its given the token system used in other games.
So now its just a time game instead of a RNG.

Some say this is a grind, but thats being plain ignorant. You have multiple routes to do, and no doubt different ways of overcoming things with different teams. Its more rewarding to get a guaranteed 1/10th of an awesome item each run than have 20 runs with net you nothing, and having a small chance to get your item each run.

Yea sorry. I havnt done them all and i dont know them in that much detail.
This is more for people to read so they understand the overview of dungeons, why you do them and so on, and to help people understand that they are still being worked on.

Stop being a fanboy and defending everything!
I do really like this game because its so much more than any other give i’ve ever played. I’ve had in depth discussions directly with the people who are actually working on it, something i’ve never had in any game before.

Yes there are decisions that have been made that not everyone (and infact most people) disagree with, and its likely there will be more sometime in a future.
ArenaNet makes mistakes just like everyone. They are on these forums actively answering questions and reading what people think.

Sometimes unpopular decisions have to be made, and sometimes they’ll backtrack because its not what they wanted.

Every single game company does this. Its called the feedback loop.

First off – I wanted to post this because of the HUGE amount of complaining about dungeons, their difficulty, rewards and so on.

Secondly – ArenaNet has JUST released this game, and the dungeons are still very much a work im progress.

So the guide:

Why do a dungeon?
Currently you do a dungeon for a few things – The first run gives really good exp and some average items. Its also a good challenge.
However, at 80 you dungeons for SKINS. You do not grind out dungeons for gear unless you VERY PARTICULARLY want that dungeons set of stats and skins and you have all rares/some exotics.

You also need to do dungeons (or rather one particular dungeon) for crafting Legendaries, which you craft mostly for the skin (and HOLY-kitten-AWESOME animations)

They are also the best test of a PvE groups ability to work together.

The rewards are also currently being adjusted, and ArenaNet is very much working on the issue for the betterment of the game and the players.

Why are dungeons so hard??
The dungeons require groups to be organised and know what they are doing. They are hard. This was, and always has been advertised by ArenaNet as what dungeons will be.

Most of this stems from mobs which have skills that hit really hard and/or have lots of health (and secondarily for the average rewards which i’ve already addressed)

Many of these skills and/or mobs have tells to ‘dodge’ skills or have a simple counter (like Chilling the Dogs in TA). Yes some bosses are bugged. If you think this is intentional stop doing dungeons right now.
In time people will have guides on how to do them, and dungeons will probably be easy mode.

I end up spending twice as much repairing than i get from the dungeon.. WTF!?
This could stem from a few things.

  • 1. Are you under geared/Not specced right? You need toughness and vitality in dungeons. If you gear is all precision, power, crit dmg you need to get some different gear or you will spend heaps of cash repairing that gear.
  • 2. Are you fighting the mob/boss/environment correctly? There is a way to beat everything. If you are doing it wrong, especially in Explorable you’re probably going to be punished.
  • 3. Is your group working together? Applying 20+ seconds of burning because your team was shooting through a firewall instead of just plinking from any old spot makes a big difference. Eles – if you arent telling your team to use projectiles through Static Field (very easy to get 25 vuln stacks), you’re going to slow your progress by up to 25%.

In general I spend too much money (getting there repairs etc) vs what i get
Dungeon’s are probably not the best way to make cash. I see lots of people saying ’we’re going to HAVE to buy gold to keep up’.
Well stop doing dungeons and expecting them to be get-rich-quicks. Re-read my first chapter – Why do a dungeon -. Notice that money making isnt in there.
I’ve done almost every path in almost every dungeon (except Arah), and done lots of crafting, wvw upgrading and i have 13 gold. Not tonnes, but not broke either. And i’ve only got 180 hours played. I’ve got 58% of the map explored, im rank 16 in sPvP, and ~2.4k wvw kills.

I have SO much more i can do, and if i focused, im certain i could break 100g no sweat.
Late game, in like 5-6 months, and in 2-3 years when people have been playing since release, repairs are going to mean nothing.

Unfortunately some things arent going to be congruous wiht ‘another world’ because you’d have to invent new words for everything, and probably a whole different language base, if they even speak at all.

Or you could see Earth as the object and tyria as the name.

Everyone who is struggling, hang in there!

Between the Betas and release i’ve got almost 300 hours on my ele. The first 150 was sPvP in the betas, and the rest was PvE/WvW.
I’ve tried almost every spec out there, with almost every weapon set, and in most of the game modes.

Im definitely not the best ele out there by any means, but im pretty good. (ex-Paradigm…. not enough time to play )

Honestly im still learning with this class. I make mistakes and i pay for them. I do. And you know what, I get so much better because of it.
Yes, we are squishy. Yes we dont do uber leet damage. But once you really start learning the class deeply, and i dont mean just leaning a good rotation ,you’ll find that we have options and damage and mobility and defence and support all in a neat little package.

We have things that need work, just like every class, but what we dont need is the FOTM re-rollers playing this class and brining terrible ideas in. We dont need big buffs. A few trait changes, and few bug fixes and we’ll be in a great spot.

Sure, we arent OP. Im glad.

We arent ‘1 viable spec’. I’ve tried about 30 different specs and all of them felt fun and fine in 8v8.

Also S/D is probably only just worse than staff and D/F.

Overall we have a few bugs and traits that could use fixing/changing. But we dont need an overhaul, or big buffs.

Thankfully Jon’s got his head screwed on right.

Feel free to stop calling everyone who disagrees with you a troll :p
We’re all Ele’s and I dont want us to be kitten any more than you do. We all need to be working together, rather than fighting.

SO here is what i propose.

Lets drop this thread and start posting on how we want the ele changed. Give Jon and the team tons of good stuff to work on. They may not choose to incorporate 99% of it, but thats the nature of this.

Having more than 25 stacks would make it incredibly OP in PvP.

I personally think the cap should be dropped to 20 stacks, and every stack over 20 deals 50% of the damage it would have done.

So for example if you have 20 stacks and someone applies a 5 seconds bleed that deals a total of 500 damage, it’ll deal 250 straight up as mitigatable damage.

Agreed on the state of the ele.

We’re not in an awful spot, and some of the recently buffed classes are still not quite meta’ed against and i doubt the will be. They and we dont need huge changes, but some fixes would be nice.

Actually thieves are the easiest to kill, because 98% of them are running a burst build and dont know what to do when they cant heartseeker.

Running D/D I open with Shocking Aura. That’ll usually net you 1-2 stuns. They sometimes open with a stun, so that’ll negate that. If they dont, follow with a Shocking Touch and Updraft. Usual combo in fire, then Earth and as soon as he stealths Knockdown and Ring of Earth. Move away from him and wait for stealth to end, Magnetic Grab and Churning Earth. Land it with Lightning Flash and its game.

Thats only against pubs, good thieves are quite different.

The ele isnt that bad. Its not the best professions, and it could use a few tweaks (i.e. traits) but we’re actually not in a bad spot right now.

also underwater water #5 is OP and will probably get nerfed.

Id drop by and watch sometime soon.

However – on your build.

You gain swiftness when you attune to air for 11 seconds. After that you’ll drop to 5% MS speed from OwA.
You have to sit in air for a further 40 seconds to get back up to 25%. In that time you could have swapped out of air and back into it 3 times. and gained access to all your other skills.

Except for PvE running around maps, that trait is pretty useless.

Who not grab Quick Glyphs and grab GoEH. With QGs its more healing per second than SoR AND it gives you access to another regen = another condi remove, as well as protection, more swiftness or might (bleugh).

In either case Lightning Flash is a far better choice than Cleansing Fire since its a lower CD and can be used on almost every map to initiate or escape, and gives you the mobility you’ve kinda lost from using the Focus.

Sure, you lose the condi removal of CF, but you still remove a condition with LF, and you have TONS of condi removal. Like seriously heaps.

Guys stop trying to wave your kitten around and quit the bullkitten. Is it possible to do well with the Ele? Sure. Can other classes achieve the same or better results with a lot less effort? Yes, and that is imbalanced. Therein lies our problem and why we need to be fixed.

Actually its not imbalanced.
The amount of effort someone has to put into a class is not balance-able.
Let me give you an example.

Class X uses 1 Attack, deals 500 damage and applies 3 debuffs, and can do this every 15 seconds
Class Y uses 3 Attacks, each 166 damage, and each applying 1 debuff, and can do any attack every 15 sec.

You could actually say Class Y is more powerful because he or she is less likely to inflict no damage (vis dodge, block etc) and can choose which condition to inflict when.

Yes they had to work more, but they achieved the same results.

Yes this is a over-simplified example, but the point it that the ammount of effort someone has to put in isnt what you balance a game around.

The ele is hands down the hardest class to be amazing at. Any warrior can come along and do well. Not true with every ele.
Thats exactly why i love the ele. Because killing people is so much more rewarding.

I kinda hope we get a small nerf or two and people jump ship….and there ARE things that need nerfing.

Trident Water, 5 and Whirlpool. 100% protection/fury/swiftness uptime on all nearby allies.

Trait re-work.

  • Flame Barrier: – Chance reduced to 10%, triggers in any attunement.
  • Internal Fire – Attacking in Fire increases your damage by 2% (stacks, max of 5 stacks) for 15 seconds.
  • Spell Slinger – 1 more stack of might to a total of 4
  • Burning Rage – Changed to ‘Each tick of Burning has a 75% chance to apply 2 seconds of vulnerability’
  • Persisting flames Evaporation – Attacking a chilled enemy while in Fire has a 20% chance to grant you and nearby allies regeneration for 5 seconds. 30 sec ICD
  • Zepher’s Speed – stacks with swiftness
  • Grounded – Deal 10% more damage to Crippled foes.
  • Stone Splinters – Deal 10% more damage while in melee range
  • Strength of Stone – Take 10% less damage in Earth
  • Salt Stone Erosion – Attacking an enemy in earth while you have swiftness has a 40% chance to remove a random boon. 15sec ICD
  • Vital Striking – Deal 5% more damage If an enemy has regeneration, and 20% chance to steal it while attuned to water.
  • Soothing Wave Extinguish – Attacking a burning enemy(must be your burn) while attuned to water inflicts 2 sec of weakness.
    Windborne Dagger – Cast times are reduced by 20% while wielding a dagger

This’ll increase power and defense a little, increase trait synergy and help make attunement swapping more meaningful

oh and fix the bugs.

For your first set? Get either vit or toughess. Unless you trait 30 earth 30 water, you’re going to get owned in 5 seconds.

Ive got a mix of knights and Valkyries crafted, so 50/50 toughness/vit and lots of pwoer and crit and crit damage. I also built 20/10/30/0/10.

Aura build huh? cool.

Dont expect great things from Fire Shield. The protection (and swiftness/fury if you trait it) is the best thing it gives.

Asumming you PvE with that – Against mobs its terrible, especially at high levels. Mobs tend to hit slow but hard. This is the worst situation for fire shield. You want lots of hits but light.

In PvP there are better options. It doesnt trigger nearly enough against ranged, and melee tend to wreck the ele.

As a leader and instructor I deal with alot of feedback almost daily.
While constructive feedback is great its also important to know what you are doing well so you dont change it, and you cna try and repeat it elsewhere.

I want this thread to contain such positive feedback so that things are changed in the future.

Obviously its fine if you disagree with someones feedback, and you can drop a quick line saying so, but lets get this civil and positive. If you have negative or constuctive feedback, feel free to make a thread, but leave it out of here.

So here is my positive feedback;

  • Great variety of events across a zone/zones. Some are stopping monsters from attacking a village, others are reclaiming a zone, others are collecting things or protecting a villager.
    For example the Temple of Melandru Event is great fun. Its not just killing a boss, you’re turned into a crab/moa/drake and go kill his healers as a monster! Awesome.
  • Great post-event effects. When a bunch of centaurs come and take an outpost, they really come and take it. If they take it, the next event might be to push them out before they siege a nearby town. This actually happens, and is exactly what we were told of. You really delivered.
  • Rewards are well balanced. Exp, karma and gold isnt too much, nor do you feel jibbed. (excluding diminishing returns which this thread doesnt need to discuss)
  • Characters from events are memorable. I like that the same merchant i just pulled out of a drakes belly is now selling a bunch of wierd drake-belly-related stuff. That centaur captain i didnt dispatch before is now actually attacking the town.
  • Events don’t happen too often not not enough. In reality, and in a game things shouldnt be constantly under siege or what have you. Events happen enough across a zone that you can run from one to another to another, but if you stay in the same spot you wont be harassed by events, nor will you never see one.
