That’s where you and I differ.
You want to make the show amazing enough to watch and get sponsors? You need superstar athletes. Without them; there’s really nothing to see.
I don’t see how we differ. I agree, but like I said in a post above (or maybe it was the other thread?), we do have these pro atheletes. What’s stopping them from being superstars is awareness. We don’t have much of a community yet due to the lack of self-promotion and tools. It really starts with each of us willing to get into serious tpvp play. Get a team, together, learn strats, participate in tournaments, and get engaged in the streams. If you look at the list of Coaches from last night’s SOAC tournament, they rep each profession’s high tier play.
The tools we lack is a freaking universal HOTM. Pretty sure it’d look a lot more pack and it’d be a lot more lively to bring a good flavor into tpvp. Also, having a lfg system that shows your rank, wins/losses maybe, and a profile of what your chars/builds are.
I mean, if you don’t think it’s worth it, then agree to disagree, but can’t say that I didn’t try to get you hyped again.
You can be a superstar at hopscotch doesn’t mean it’s going to draw a crowd.
It has to be awesome to watch.
I believe the downed state not only makes no sense what so ever but; it’s boring to watch someone rubbing someone else; unless genitals are involved.

The VODs aren’t up yet. We should have them up here tomorrow! It was awesome, and I really hope you enjoy it.
You should give him the channel anyways so he can follow you guys :P
Can you link your channel? I wasn’t able to watch it and I’d like to keep up with future casts.
I believe one is http://twitch.tv/soacgaming and the other is http://twitch.tv/towerdivetv
You can view ‘past broadcasts’ if you are impatient for the better quality video loads.
I don’t know why the teams who left are even considered competitive anymore. They aren’t competing in gw2 due to not playing, so they are NOT a competitive team in tpvp anymore and it doesn’t matter why they left or why anyone other than me, myself leaves. I enjoy the game, and I play it competitively. When I see others play it competitively, it makes it even more fun. I don’t need the top team players from the past to come back or even stay to nurture my competitiveness. I just need people to compete with. And there are people compete with no matter how much you want to deny it. And that’s a competition. If that’s not your kind of competition, maybe find a new hobby?
Aaah.
See.
Finally, you talk about what you want from the game…
Just medium level play that can feel pretty competitive. That has nothing, like at all, to do with an esport.
Cool, that you found what you want, thnks for the complete sidetrack. Anyways… now that you know… don’t go saying ‘people are raining on the esports parade and that is bad’ because you don’t really care.
You just want base level competition, not to have super leet korean teams playing the game 24/7 for the sake of prize money.Good talk…
I’m sure I’ve played in more tournaments than most of the players in this tpvp forum. So no, my kind of competition is not ‘base’ level. I am not talking about friendlies. I am talking about facing people who want to be the best at all costs. Koreans are good, but they don’t rule ever game out there. Maybe stick to your korean fanboy games? Not worth talking to you anymore kid.
Depends if you are trying to kill the thief…or just want to roam. Killing thieves in WvW is almost impossible if they have good defense and know how to disengage vis shadow step and shortbow, however, for most gank thieves, you can most likely burst them down. Binding blade is a good check to see if they are nearby when they cloak.
Nah, you interpretted me wrong. I am not saying anything about scaring other teams. It’s just a matter of fact that if you don’t play, you don’t get better. And with all the balancing changes, I doubt any returning ‘top team’ will be able to handle a pug group of top tier players. I am just not one to mope about losing top teams. People will get better, teams will form again and then they’ll become the top teams. Just gotta keep the hype up.
Yes, whoever is best make up the top teams, but that doesn’t mean that they esport level competitive teams…
When it comes to these competitive teams coming back, finish your train of thought.
So, competitive teams won’t be good if they take prolonged breaks from a game…
Then why are they taking a long break from GW2??
If it had great gameplay with esports potential, why aren’t they still keeping up to speed on the game?
Why haven’t they posting out threads of the tweaks they need to see before coming back??
I don’t know why the teams who left are even considered competitive anymore. They aren’t competing in gw2 due to not playing, so they are NOT a competitive team in tpvp anymore and it doesn’t matter why they left or why anyone other than me, myself leaves. I do admit OP, this is gonna bother me as well especially since I’m not a GW1 player :X (You aren’t mad) but I think what people are saying (which I do agree with) is your point about the avenger vs avenger of the _______. Because it has the “of the ________” it’s pretty much not the same imo. Just like Champion Paragon is not like Champion Slayer.
Whichever ‘big team’ left probably couldn’t face our top tier players now. Not sure what you mean by ‘big’ teams. Unless you mean player size—and that’s what we are trying to make grow. There are players trying to make it work and that’s the beauty of it. If you don’t like it, seriously, just play something you like.
lol tp, which is not even the best EU team stomped some of the best NA players. what hes saying is teams that have and would stomp tp, and thus any na team, left long ago. and most pro gamers never even bought the game due to all the missing features.
I mean, if we have EU teams, that means we can still get NA teams going on. New players need to take the challenge to rise up against whoever is on top! And that’s a good thing we still have teams :P
Just because conquest did bad in the past doesn’t mean it’ll always be bad, then we wouldn’t have anyone attempting innovation if we tried to copy what just ‘works’. -shrug-
Innovation is fine.
If it is done well. Not everyone constantly innovates everything for a reason.
Especially when it comes to something as large as an MMO.Whichever ‘big team’ left probably couldn’t face our top tier players now.
Seriously?
Are you implying that the GW2 top teams, out of the very few teams that currently play GW2 (a major one of which has only been together for a few months time), are scaring away other highly competitive teams??
Uhm, whatever helps you sleep at night?
Nah, you interpretted me wrong. I am not saying anything about scaring other teams. It’s just a matter of fact that if you don’t play, you don’t get better. And there are indeed some things that need balancing. But the suggestion offered earlier was not good imo.
-Remove downed state.. what?
edit: @gareth like I’m all up about stating what’s bad, but a lot of the things that have been said or just misconceptions or bad perspectives not any gamebreaking things.

You may or may not be right. But fact is, there were consistently 300 viewers throughout the whole stream. That means people didn’t stop watching or at least didn’t close the stream window and ideally that means it was interesting to watch for those who tried to watch it. And this is a team game with the game mode ‘capture point’. Of course it’s going to rely heavily on teamplay. I think your view of skill is who can kill one another, but that’s not what the current available game mode is. If you want a deathmatch game mode, sure—I’ll support it for more game modes and that will rely more on your ability to win a 1v1. But this current game mode is fine and works (or is getting better at least) and the way you define skill is MUCH different. It’s not about landing the kill, it’s about securing points and knowing when and where to go; if you can get a kill, wonderful, but it’s your job to make sure you are in the right place in the right time to defend your point if you can or support people who are outnumbered.
Streams tend to go up in count as the game goes on (since more people see the fact its streaming or show up late).
But aaanyways, hardcore (you have to be to stick with the game at this point) dedicated fans watching a match is different than the general gaming population.Conquest doesn’t seem to do shoutcasting any favors, the combat is decent for it, but the map is terrible.
and that’s why pvp is not popular nor watched by many and we have posts like this daily. you can disagree with me all you want but fact is there are very few who take pvp seriously and very few who enjoy watching streams and vids. the game mode is one of the many reasons this is the case.
Where are your facts lol? I don’t see 300 posts that spvp is failing. Just a handful of people who are trying to kill esports for whatever reason they want. sigh..
The games PvP population tanked after launch and still isn’t going up.
Forum squabbling has nothing to do with whether or not a game will be an Esport, that’s entirely in Anets hands and they lost literally every Esport centric team because of their gameplay!!! if it was a great game for esports, teams would have stuck around, practiced and kept teams together for when it had leaderboards and custom arenas.
No big team came back because of them.
That’s only when it’s already popular lol. I mean, it’s making improvement and relatively the count went up from 200 to 300+ if we want to start at the beginning of the stream. And there’s still room to see where it’ll go. Just because conquest did bad in the past doesn’t mean it’ll always be bad, then we wouldn’t have anyone attempting innovation if we tried to copy what just ‘works’. -shrug-

If you drop downed state, another skill layer would disappear. The game doesn’t need to be dumbed down even more. Balance it a bit more? Why not. But drop it? Nah.
Are you kidding? The downed state is what dumbs this game down. It turns everyone into healers. Bad play is covered by someone healing the downed player.
Bad play? If 4 people coordinate a focus fire on you down, more than likely you’ll die, no matter how good you or bad you are. And tbh, I am not sure whether tpvp is in the scope for being ‘serious’ for solo-queuers which seems to be the majority of criticizers; but atm it’s perfectly fine for premades and organized 5-man teams.
If 4 people focus you down; it’s up to you to use your toolbox to survive and your allies must also use their toolbox to save your life.
Rubbing a downed player is the most ridiculous mechanic I have ever seen.
I’ve been in 2 vs 1 and 3 vs 1 plenty of times and laugh my head off when I take one of them down. Watching the other players use invulnerability while healing the downed player in mid fight is hilarious.
I don’t think you are approaching this right. If your problem is invulnerability, then suggesting to not allow invulnerability to allow you to res is much better. It seems to me that you cannot get the stomp off in time and that’s when you need to consider, ‘wow, I really need some cc or haste or stability to make sure I land it’. If you just want to shout spvp sucks and kill esports because of your negativity, then go for it, I’m done talking now because I can see quite some ignorance. I’d support you more if the streams that have been going on lately weren’t successful, but they were, and that’s either because 1) it’s fun or 2) people do take it seriously or 3) people are considering taking it seriously due to new interest from watching the stream
Using CC to prevent healing a downed player.
Now why didn’t I think of that? Probably because my CC is used to neutralize one player while I pound on the other? I suppose the same argument could be made when players keep their invulnerability to secure the stomp. Then again; even that can’t be accomplished in certain situations because some classes can prevent themselves from being stomped; buying enough time for his newb friend to heal him.
It’s too bad. It has potential. It’s just throwing it out the window on unbalanced mechanics designed to cover up poor play.
Your scenarios seem like it’s a 1 hero vs all which should not be the case. I assume you do not have a premade—and that is a disadvantage unfortunately because I will admit that spvp mechanics do not support solo-queuers without good mutual communication.
But given that you do have a premade group. What are they doing? If you try to stomp and secure it with invulnerability, but it’s a thief—you can blink to where the thief teleports or just dps him down with your friends. If there is another person coming up to res him, and you don’t have a blink on you to secure that stomp, call a friend to assist you and try to dps the person down during that time or re-stomping if their health still low enough where you can out-stomp the res.
For mesmers, you can actually ‘fake-out’ a stomp which is what I learned yesterday. Most of the time, mesmers will use their skill during your stomp animation. If you mind-game right and pull back before stomping and restart the stomping animation while they cast it, 70% (random number but it’s often) they’ll be within vincinity for you to land it.
edit: unless you have a point neutralized or capped, you should never be running into a 2 v 1 unless you have teammates coming. If it’s a 1 v 1 and an enemy comes, there are ways to secure the stomp depending on what kind of enemy comes to assit them (most of the time stability will work). In the cases of the ‘stalling’ classes such as eles, mesmers and thieves you just have to approach them differently, but the good thing is, they cannot be ressed while using their stalling moves.

Didn’t get to see it, but it was so much fun being a part of the SOAC tournament that I pretty much understand the hard work you put into for these casts. Keep up the good work! Say no to killing esports haha
Downstate, gliding camera, abilities that once start are uncanclebale etc etc.
Saying etc, etc doesn’t exactly build a point. Moreover I question your understanding of the mechanics of this game, you can cancel an on-going ability/animation so long as its not a mobility skill that has a fixed trajectory and must carry out said trajectory. (Unless, somehow everything is vastly different when not playing a guardian.)
Neverwinter’s combat is not good as far as my opinion of it goes, and its certainly never going to amount to anything in PvP because of the crazy model its running with in the cash shop.
I’ve generally never understood the dislike of downed state except on a topic of balance between the classes. Its a mechanic and you learn to play with it, just as in Aion you’d learn to play with flying.
flying didn’t make 2v1 lesser skilled players extremely difficult and 3v1 virtually impossible
In a balanced mmorpg with equally geared people 1v3 will ALWAYS be impossible, and 1v2 rare
with equal gear AND skill maybe. but an elite player should be able to take out multiple lesser skilled players. or if equal skilled players perform poorly they should be punished for it. but with downed even a couple bad players or someone who makes tons of mistakes can simply be saved by down state
1 vs 3 even 1 vs 5 happens regularly in WvW. The fact you don’t have that happen in tournament may be means the match making actually works on personal skill level?
in wvw you fight vs undergeared people or fake level 80s. That’s why im saying you won’t 1v3 in spvp because gear doesnt matter that much.
if players actually died and did not go downed though you would see many more examples of 1v3. Downed state leaves much more opportunity for mistakes and bad play to be made up for compared to other games.
Game would be much more popular and fun to watch without downed state or improved down state where you could stomp in 1 sec.
Game is fun to watch with good shout casters and good camera control. It’s even better with pro players, because you begin to see tactics and coordination. If you could stomp in 1 second, there’s no point in a downed state (which is probably why you said that -_-). Tournament last night had 300 viewers and it was super fun for the players. It’s a start and it wasn’t until I received some advice from better players such as Silven that I actually began to see the major team plays each map and how to challenge different metas with utility, rune, sigil, weapons, etc changes.
wow 300 viewers they might pass the guy who streams auction house play. Sorry but fighting on small points is not fun to watch, it removes certain specs and play styles from even being viable, and stomp in 1 sec would be fine. Look at FPS games with “downed” state, there is no saving, just a last stand bleed out that can be ended with a head shot.
look at the match last night, it was won by point control, back capping and movement rather than superior class skill, which is another reason it’s not fun to watch. People want to see open field skirmishes winning/losing the match, not oh look they capped an undefended node and then 2v1’d the far point while a bunker kept himself alive.
You may or may not be right. But fact is, there were consistently 300 viewers throughout the whole stream. If it is enjoyable to watch or not is personal opinion.
And i think it’s kitten ejoyable with some good shoutcasting and POV switching. Also i had my fare share of loosing and winning 2v1/1v2 vs worse/better players and there are multiple videos on the net showing that this kind of stuff is possible (remembering some teldo vid, where he 1v3 some “noobs”, just look it up).
And last but not least, if you find it troubling that with the addition of a support guy to a fight a lesser skilled opponent can get carried through it, you must really hate healers in other games.
if my example were another game the player would be dead and waiting for re-spawn when the healer got there leaving for a 1v1 situation which is much more fun to watch.
Broken? If it takes 2 to take 1 person down. Then ideally that means you have a 3 v 4 elsewhere. Given the abilities of your team, you should be able to capitalize mid or the other point by splitting up or focus firing on wherever the 3 zerg. Yes, you may go down, but if it takes 2 people to take you down, as long as you have the point, or the point is neutralized, then you are in good shape. This isn’t team deathmatch if you haven’t realized yet..
If you drop downed state, another skill layer would disappear. The game doesn’t need to be dumbed down even more. Balance it a bit more? Why not. But drop it? Nah.

If it’s meant to be, it starts with me!
But seriously, the reason why spvp hasn’t taken off yet is the lack of hype and communication with the pro players. Most players nowadays rely way too much on WvW tactics, personal theorycrafting, PvE builds, etc. There’s so much to consider when you actually get down to hardcore pvp and every single thing matters—sigils, runes, traits, utilities, team composition and you have to adjust depending on who you face. Most people are too lazy to do that and view pvp as a ‘one-build-to-rule-them-all’ per class. But that’s not the case.
Since last night (SOAC tournament) I’ve always used the same build because it worked well for me, but it didn’t synergize with the them and there were minor details that didn’t prepare against certain match ups, and it could simply be a quick utility change. Getting coached from Silven was amazing and there were so many things to do against certain matchups that I never even realized.
What I think we need is a better way to communicate to better players and watch how they play. ATM, a lot of tpvpers have no idea what it’s like to be in a premade coordinated group.
Please tell me at least one of you guys is 1h sword spec! Need to represent!!
lol I wish. But gotta play to win unfortunately :\. Maybe if we score the first game!
I think there’s a bug when you go down or something and it stops procing per kill. Not sure when they’ll fix it.
I’m down for a go, not sure how to ‘practice’ without a mesmer though :P
lol, orbs #needbetterauto
Ah, wish I could send you an invite, but I’m NA Good luck finding a guild!
Do they include spectators now? It used to show 12/20, could be full with 8 people spectating to create the full 20/20.
^ yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s still not including spectators in the count.
It should incude:
-the # of players currently playing
-the MAX # of players allowed to play
-# of spectators
-total # of people in the room for convenience.
IMO, the problem is the community and not enough hype! A lot of people are bringing players who are still interested together and bit by bit, these players will become our new top players. Winning the old playerbase would be nice, but we can only do so much currently until custom arenas are more refined and the queue system gets a major update.
New game modes and better balances would be nice, but it’s not what’s making this ‘esport’ lacking.
As much as I’d like gw2 to have everything it should have tomorrow, the best thing to keep esports alive is just to play it like an esport and get more people onboard.
Repping VZ in the SOAC tournament tonight!

If anyone in interested in getting into tpvp, I party up with a lot of our members and have some fun queue the tpvp ladder. I offer practice sessions and theorycrafting advice/approaches. Also, we do tons of PvE (dungeons, members shout-out world events often to get that daily chest!) and WvW (our leader is a great commander and skirmisher).
Post here or PM/send in-game mail/whisper me/Rising Dusk.2408 for a possible trial run if you are interested!
We aim to be a close group at all times and collaborate on many different efforts. Happy Thursday!
If you mean on your team, hidden QP rating <> rank. And also the QP rating system is bad. So that’s probably why. (It’s not fixed)
So im i Central time what time would it be my time that the tournaments start can anyone help me out with figuring that out lol?
Hm, if it’s at 5pm PST, then that’s 8pm EST and I believe CST is just 1 hr behind so 7pm CST
I am a fan of your chat tabs, haha.
Practice at 10am GMT
Log in, pm me and we’ll get some group practice going!
How does GMT translate to EST? I get off work at 5pm EST normally.
Nooo, Bas, take me off the roster for Saturday. Sigh, I forgot it was graduation weekend so I can’t make it :\. I hope we have some alts stepping up tho!
Fellow Guards of all regions! Just to hype up and engage that SOAC tournament coming up tomorrow which will be a faceoff between 5 Guards vs. 5 Mesmers – What experiences do you as a guard have against fighting mesmers? All information is welcomed and suggestions for Guard shenanegans. Please look out for the casting stream tomorrow, and hopefully I and the others who have signed up will represent the Guardians well.
Hey! I’m always a supporter of people who are promoting tpvp however I’d have to say r40 is not ‘slightly above average’ so you may want to reduce it to something like r25-r30. Also, make sure to note whether you are NA or EU!
Bas, put me in for Saturday as well.

Lol, we have team mesmer first. Fun :P
Yesterday emon and I played some tournaments. It was quite fun despite us only being two players :P He even gave a small necro tutorial
… until we got interrupted x)
It´s good to see many players on the NA-part of the project, but I´d love to see some more players sign up for EU xPo and btw…. for the sake of getting more EU players… am I allowed to promote the project on the fr/ger gw2 forum?
Definitely! And if you get any responses, feel free to send them an invite personally yourself, if you do not have admin rights, ask emon to give you them, but you should be able to I believe. Good to know you both have been able to team up! ^^
Couldn’t make it out last night to the Guardian get together, but looking forward to getting in some practice in later today! Go Team Guard!
I’d like to encourage any new pvpers, hiatus pvpers who have returned recently, or experienced players to consider joining! We need more people to fill up team slots and unfortunately I cannot duplicate myself to be on two separate teams (sad life). I have managed to get a full team for the past two nights and I am trying to make sure I alternate my group so everyone in the guild gets a chance to have a full party experience.
For all pvpers, I will be looking into creating a website soon for the pvp realm, so if you have any suggestions on what types of functionatilies you would like it to have to help you become a better player (or just as a necessity), please lt me know.
