It felt incredibly strange to be punished for participating in their event.

Explain how you are being punished.

I knew someone would pick up on that, as I’m aware that punished isn’t exactly the right word to use, but surely you can see where I am coming from where people who didn’t participate were given the ability to make money out of that choice, while those who didn’t, didn’t. Considering the candidate that I backed didn’t win the election, I was rewarded with nothing but some achievement points and a mini if you can count that, but I didn’t even need to vote to get those.

There is a clear difference between not being rewarded, and being punished. But even that doesn’t fit because by your own admission you were rewarded. You just didn’t get the reward you wanted. You had to have known this was going to happen before you started. To one side or the other. For one side to win the vote the other had to lose it, so you had to be aware that there was a chance your votes would be meaningless before you cast them.

As to the money thing, it was a lose/lose situation. Being apparently unable to just remove those support token from the loot tables right away meant that they would keep dropping, and leaving them without value would have just opened the door for people to complain about getting trash for killing mobs and completing runs. At least this way you know you get something when you happen upon a drop.

I understand that you feel like you would have gotten more monetary gain from not using your tokens and then selling them all later, but that wasn’t what the event was about, so you’re not being punished for partaking in it. If anything you can count this issue as a minor exploit; as people really weren’t intended to have a bunch of unused tokens to begin with.

Anything done for the engineer that involves work pretty much assures that Arena Net won’t bother with it.

Engineer's in PVE - do they exist?

Arkham Creed.7358

I play my engineer in PvE almost exclusively, and love it. That said I do have a theory as to why we don’t see a lot of each other. Basically it is just a lack of understanding of what engineers are by the players. Yes those of us who main engineers can do great things, but the average player comes to the profession and leaves it shortly after they realize that a ‘zerker warrior can out DPS just about all of our possible builds. Honestly the issue is that engineers aren’t the best at anything, so all the players who feel like they have to be the best they can be at any given goal, role, or play style abandon us almost instantly. There is even the misconception that elementalists are more versatile than us (false).

All I can say is that I see engineers as a hardcore hybrid profession. If you try to focus on any one thing you’re simply going to suffer, and really even the much loved grenaders are under-performing in terms of DPS. So you really have to build yourself knowing that you won’t have the best of this or that, and instead focus on making a competent build that can do multiple things. At least that is how I see it. It is all subjective, but I define a build as viable or not based on how useful you are playing it, and I’ve found that in PvE –be it events or dungeons- there is always something I can bring to the party to help out. Yeah I may not be the best at damage, or the greatest support (although I think I am in the top tier of condition removal) but I can always do something to help out, and no one complains. Yeah some jerk ‘zerker in COF may have unkind things to say about me, but after I drag his worthless hide off the dirt a few times he tends to quiet down.

I would rather have a year of bug removal, than a year of limited buggy content. The prior events have made it clear. Events in general are just to be dreaded in some way by the new bugs they introduce. But someone must have thought it was a good idea to go forward with releasing more of them and thus more bugs more frequently. I’d love to enjoy some of the things they add, if they took the time to test it instead of dumping it on us as is. It’s a nice gesture to want to release so much so fast, but is the team up to the task or spreading themselves too thin? I just feel that bugs like this that have existed for a long time will be put on the back burner till this phase is over.

Agreed. Arena Net really needs to get their priorities straight. Three million copies sold is actually really good for a new MMO given how jaded MMO players are becoming, so it is time for them to stop pushing the “look at all our constant updates” hype and get to work actually making their game fully playable.

A noob's take on things

Arkham Creed.7358

The game doesn’t do the best job educating new players, that is for sure. But I hear they are working on that, and a whole new tutorial should release at about the same time the game launces in Asia. If you’re not up for waiting, just ask something specific and myself and many others will do our best to help you out. That said, here are a few core things I see come up over and over again.

Leveling: DO NOT RUSH IT! Take your time and take it slow. Guild Wars 2 is a game about enjoying the journey, and if you just try to move through a zone hitting hearts like a check list you WILL miss out on most of what this game has to offer.

Enjoy the story: They are little nuggets of lore scattered all over the game, for those who want to seek them out. And I for one highly suggest you do seek them out, as they will provide a much needed context to everything you’re doing in the world, and your place in it.

Events, stop and stay awhile: Just because an event is over doesn’t mean it is over. Stick around and see if a conversation between a few NPCs starts up, and if one of them says they are going to do something and run off, follow them. Often this will lead to some of that hidden lore I mentioned, or maybe another event.

Experience: Combat exp is….in a word; pathetic. You can get a nice boost from exploring the map, and a good chunk from hearts, but the money (and karma and exp) comes from events.

Loot: the loot ranking works like this, white (trash), blue (slightly better trash), green (good stuff at low levels when you can get it), yellow (the good stuff), orange (the better stuff), pink (the best stuff), and purple (you’re a legend).

Dodging: Use it when you need it, but don’t waste it.

The trinity: Heal yourself, no one can do it for you. And when you get unwanted aggro…run; there is no taunting.

Gear: Within any given level range and rarity (for example, level 80 orange items), all weapons and armor have roughly the same stats. The difference is in the specific stats buffed. So for example the always popular Berserker gear is really no better than the less used Rabid gear. The difference is that each buffs different stats, and is used for different play-styles and builds. Ultimately armor is designated by prefix, such as Berserker and Rabid, and a suffix. The prefix just tells you what stats are on the item, and the suffix tells you what upgrades it has. For example “Berserker’s Pirate Coat of the Berserker” would be a standard armor (with an armor rating universal across its type and rarity) that buffs “zerker” stats through both the prefix and suffix. However “Berserker’s Pirate Coat of the Vampire” buffs the typical ‘zerker stats with the prefix, but uses the special “runes of the vampire” upgrades to add other functions like life steal on attack for its suffix.

That’s one long rapier.

My thoughts exactly.

They need to cut a foot and 1/2 off that thing, at least…

It isn’t nearly as bad as you claim. Most people don’t realize that rapiers had extremely long blades, some of them even reaching (or exceeding) 50 inches. It got so bad that a law was made in England limiting them to ‘only’ ~40 inches. While that rapier is certainly too big for her, it looks to be within the size range of actual weapons. Also, it’s worth pointing out that most of the other weapons in this game have grossly exaggerated sizes in many of their skins.

Maybe, but that rapier is definitely longer than 40-50 inches (1.3m). That has to be closer to 80 inches.

Maybe. Depends on how it scales with a character’s size. That woman could just be tiny.

Now, add a rose focus. Or a focus that actually doesn’t look like some overblown piece of metal you carry around.

I expect that to happen when they add ascended weapons. Currently most ascended items have some connection to lore, even if not explicitly stated, and a fan favorite character from the original Guild Wars, the mesmer Gwen, had a focus that looked like a rose in the original game. And she is a bigger part of Guild Wars 2 lore than most people realize, given that she founded Ebon Hawke and is Logan’s ancestor (and possibly part of the true royal family of Ascalon, although that is just speculation….very….very….complected speculation).

To heck with the charr. I think humans should retake Ascalon and have all charr deported to the Ring of Fire Islands. No ship though; they have to swim.

Just thank your puny gods your meat tastes like crap, or we would have finished the job with you LONG ago.XD

History lesson:

The charr encounter the Titans, and are enslaved.
Humans encounter the Titans, and destroy them.

The charr encounter the Destroyers and foolishly worship them.
Humans encounter the Destroyers and kill their queen.

The charr lose the ancient symbol of their ruler and remain unable to get it back for two hundred years.
Humans manage to get back the symbol of the ancient char ruler in a week.

The only thing the charr can do reliably is get themselves into messes the humans have to clean up.

That was the flame legion.

Now foolish human engineers are playing with Charr toys.XD

And the flame legion completely dominated the charr for hundreds of years. Thus the flame legion is superior to the other charr legions. And do you know who is superior to the flame legion? Humans. After all you would have never been able to “rebel” against them had it not been for mankind weakening them so much and rescuing your savior from captivity.

Well, USED to be superior, as you USED to be superior.

You should show respect to the race that invented your profession.XD

I run an elixir build, so that means I should be respecting the hylek, correct? Or perhaps the asura because they’ve been engineering a lot longer than charr. Either way you should show some respect to the race that invented cannons, and possibly gun powder (although I think that was the dwarves).

This is a small thing, in comparison to what they have currently on their plates, and doesn’t actually affect game function. Considering the fact that the latest patch has borked graphics to the point of crashing, I’d rather them work on that kind of stuff first.

You’re right. Instead of dedicating some resources to fixing the issue with hobo sacks after nearly an entire year, they are better off using resources to make an entire new set of weapon skins. Once again.

Arena Net has a habit of releasing broken content, and then having to fix it later. And instead of fixing what they have they just release more that needs to be fixed. Clearly they have the “dig up” mindset.

[BUG] Rune descriptions

Apparently, after some tests in the PvP lobby, it seems that when hit, when struck, and on hit all mean the exact same thing. This is needlessly confusing and needs to be fixed. I don’t know if some runes are malfunctioning or if there simply needs to be a standardized wording for who exactly these runes do, but either way I am calling it a bug due to the annoyance and lack of anywhere else on the forums to post this.

I just tested the Superior Runes of Rata Sum in the PvP lobby, as they say “50% chance to summon a radiation field on hit.”

Attacked a golem a few dozen times, no summon. Attacked a training NPC once then spent the rest of the fight running around, summon when I was attacked.

So apparently when hit, when struck, and on hit all mean the same thing. Kind of annoying. Arena Net should really just standardize the wording across all rune sets to avoid such confusion.

Cool rapier could fit to my Noble Mesmer character. I wonder if Anet will try to create more rapiers for lover levels for instance ?

A rapier is one of the most sought after and requested skin types since well before beta started. Heck some would saying going all the way back to GW1. So I have a feeling its going to stay right where it is, and we should all be thankful it isn’t some kind of mini-legendary mystic forge recipe like the hammer Foefire’s Power.

20% chance on hit runes

Arkham Creed.7358

Recently I became aware of a –presumably new- rune called the Superior Rune of Perplexity, and I must say I am intrigued. I’ve never really dealt with these special effect runes before, instead sticking to direct stat buffs or duration boosts, but this one strikes me as very cool primarily because of the fourth rune benefit; 20% chance to cause confuse on hit.

Of course this leads to an important question; just what do they mean by that? Is it a 20% chance when I hit a target, or is it 20% chance when the target hits me? One would be awesome and possibly overpowered, the other would be…..virtually useless to me.

While I understand where you are coming from, their primary goal has always been releasing new content, and they will eventually fix most graphics anomalies as the one you’re describing, just not on the timetable we players may like.
That being said, this is still a “first world problem” as your game runs fine, despite the fact that your back piece clips with your kits. Mine, however, is barely functional at the moment. I would rather have a working game environment.

THIS. Keywords: “First World Problem”

Also, you still haven’t said why this is such an alarming idea that you’ve deigned to waste your time responding to a pointless thread. I’m still curious.

Because, frankly, Arena Net has done ridiculously stupid and unfavorably received things before on the whims of the “vocal minority,” so I wouldn’t put it past them to do something else ridiculously stupid and unfavorable because of one “pointless” thread. To be honest while I continue to trust Arena Net’s intent with the game, the philosophy that inspired me to buy it in the first place, I do not trust Arena Net to be able to properly distinguish between what the core community actually want, and what is desired by a handful of forum crybabies that were never part of the target audience to begin with.

Call me elitist or entitled if you want to, but as someone who has been with the Guild Wars series for years, spent hundreds of dollars on in-game goods and officially licensed peripherals, pre-purchased Guild Wars 2 (not just a dime-a-dozen pre-order like new games always get), and who embraced and defended some of their crazier pre-release ideas (like no gear progression, no end-game, and no trinity), I feel like my opinions and desires should be held above those of some random former WoW player who is only here because Total Biscuit made a few videos. Heck, without players like me there wouldn’t be a Guild Wars 2. But thus far Arena Net, or perhaps NC Soft, seem to be making it more and more of a habit to completely ignore the people that allowed Arena Net to become something other than just another failed MMO company and instead pander to the masses that a large number of those core fans came to Guild Wars to get away from.

And before you reply; no I wasn’t calling you a WoW fanboy. I don’t know your history with this series or that one, and I’m not speaking about you with that paragraph. But my point stands; someone on the development or publishing side of this game got blinded by the (false) hope of WoW dollars and turned their backs on the players that made them anything to begin with. So as much as I hate ideas and threads like this, it wouldn’t surprise me at all for Arena Net to do it. As to why I keep posting, well, at the very least I want my objection on record, even if no one that matters will read it.

As someone who is an avid supporter of the original Guild Wars, I gave Anet the benefit of doubt for their ideas for GW2 (and what happened to that lol) but if you supported the changes made in GW2, there is no more weight your option should have than the mentioned WoW fanboy. Guild Wars 2 is Anet’s shot at WoW, otherwise it would be an actual sequel to GW1.

But moving on topic, yes to heavy armor, who cares about aesthetics? Those that do will work just as hard again to get the new elite heavy armors, those who don’t will be saving time like usual.

As, of all people, WoWcrendor once put it; you didn’t want a squeal, you wanted an expansion.

Squeals are not supposed to be the exact same thing as what came before, and really aren’t even direct continuations unless planned from the start. A squeal is a chance to try something new, experiment with new ideas, and take things in a new direction. And while I agree that Guild Wars 2 failed to live up to all my expectations, I disagree that liking it is somehow a betrayal of the series. If anything you’re stubborn refusal to accept this game as its own thing means that your opinion counts less, not mine.

The one expectation I had for Guild Wars 2 that it absolutely lived up to?

This will be Guild Wars 2. Not Guild Wars 2.0.

If you fail to understand the difference, then you probably should just stick with expansions.

On a side note, is there any gear NOW that is medium but looks heavy?

Basically no; each armor class is intended to have a distinct look to it, so while there may be a little bit of overlap, there won’t be any sets that cross that line. I agree that we currently have a few too many heavy coats in our lineup, you’re not going to see much in the way of metal plates.

That said, the only armor that leaps to mind as kind of being a little bit heavy-ish is the new Magitech set, simply because it has a lot of metal to it, but it is still very much a leather coat.

EDIT: No; I didn’t keep those colors. I was just playing around with the PvP locker.

I agree with this thread. I can’t really see any issue with putting Engis in heavy armor.

How about the fact that it makes no sense conceptually or thematically?

Seriously, when was the last time you saw a mechanic clocking into work in full plate armor? Or a computer tech in chain mail?

I don’t really care about themes and rp carebear stuff. I am sure that Anet could find some way to explain an engineer coming up with a way to buff up their armor capability if they decided to go that way.

I just love how to the “hardcore” player anything except the mind-numbingly easy and no-skill-required content of “replay this exact instance a hundred times while spamming the exact rotation you found on a wiki for three months until luck gets you a cool reward” somehow becomes “carebear.”

It’s a hilarious bit of hypocrisy; you guys run your mouths off about challenge when what you really want is content built around base systems (like the trinity) so dirt-stupid a four year old could figure them out, and that you can min/max to the point of being automatic. Then you use the plug-ins to do the speed running for you while waiting on RNG to give you more powerful gear so you can show off to new players while pretending to be hardcore to the point of even convincing yourselves that lie is somehow true.

Pro Tip: The most well geared and famous WoW player didn’t earn any of his fancy stuff; he farmed an instance until it dropped. That isn’t “hardcore,” it’s mindlessly doing the same thing over and over until the game just hands you something shiny. It’s carebear.

Clearly you’ve not seen that bug that causes back skins to glitch through whatever kit you have equipped. Been around since beta, and there still hasn’t even been a mention of it, let alone a fix. Engineer kit cosmetics do not work properly, and they never have.

Maybe it is only me here, but I feel like when you have a cosmetic driven game like Guild Wars 2 you should probably make sure the cosmetic items already in the game work properly before you add more stuff that you’ll just have to fix later.

That being said……it’s just something you get used to.

Or we could try to push for a new norn racial skill that is roughly equivalent to Signet of the Hunt. Just saying.

I recently moved from my human main to a norn alt, and I must say I was shocked by just how slow they seem to move. And I honestly do find it very frustrating, to the point of wanting to reach into my screen and slap the little guy, demanding he pick up the pace.

Obviously that was a joke.

That said I never noticed this problem before because the only other time I played a norn was a ranger, and I used the Signet of the Hunt for a constant +25% movement speed, however re-rolling the alt as a guardian has shocked me with how slow they seem to move. I honestly have no idea how to solve this problem, as I realize that all races are supposed to have the same basic run speed, but that just further frustrates me because it certainly doesn’t feel that way. Perhaps some change to the animation…I don’t know, I just know that right now the biggest thing hurting my enjoyment of the game is how god-awful slow my character feels.

It certainly is interesting to see how many posts we’ve actually gotten, though our total is still miles behind that of the ranger and the necromancer. So, in keeping with my thread invasion idea, I saw we start post bombing in the ranger forum. I get that we’re not actually being ignored in our entirety, but that doesn’t change the fact that some of the biggest issues the engineer community have are being ignored.

While I am pleased to see the kit issue –a personal concern of mine- getting a few posts addressing it, I still feel that we could get more open and honest feedback about it. I’ll come right out and say it, since tip-toeing around the issue has never yielded results; Colin Johanson lied in his post. I realize that is pretty inflammatory, but it is apparently what went down. The man is one of the biggest authorities on the development side of Guild Wars 2, so you can’t honestly expect me to believe that he just didn’t know that his claim of the team focusing more on tech and quality of life issues than cosmetic ones was a load of crap. Just look at all the cosmetic stuff added to the game since he made that claim and you can tell that is the case.

Some pretty interesting ideas here. I was actually spit-balling some ideas on how to address this today. This has always been something that has bothered me, too.

For example:

  • Have kits respect the existing back item flag. If you have a back item and you want to show it, hide the kit. If you don’t have a back item or choose to hide it, always show the kit.

And what about that bug that has been around since beta that makes our kits clip through our back skins?

  • Move the kit somewhere else on your body. I know, crazy right? For example, who doesn’t like a sweet fanny-pack?

Wow, that is a fantastic idea. But it sounds a little familiar….

You guys don’t actually read the engineer forums very much do you?

At this point there is really only one thing we can do, and doing so pretty much assures that those who agree to take part will be getting some forum bans in the process. You said yourself that one of the few developer responses you’ve seen was a rather….condescending, response in the PvP forums, and the only legitimate one I’ve seen was before my thread was exiled here from general discussion. The mods and developers are ignoring us. Anything we post here in the engineer sub-forum may as well not exist, and really the same goes for the suggestions forums. So there is really only one thing we can do; the same thing every small and unimportant country does that always gets the attention of the United Nations; invasion.

We have to become a nuisance to our neighbors. If Arena Net likes to ignore us, we just do a little research and find the profession sub-forum that gets the most attention and then start posting all our issues and ideas there. We have to, in mass, migrate to a more popular profession’s forum and not leave until they show us the same respect and attention. Again; this will result in bans. Lots of bans. But as I said; anything we say or do here is irrelevant.

I’m pretty sure you’re right, that they don’t care; if they do, they’re certainly not showing it. Bit depressing, really.

Personally I find it enraging, so I try not to think about it. Just keep bumping my thread and hoping someone will notice, or that maybe one day it will get enough responses to make them notice. But if I stop to think about the most notable thing they’ve ever done for engineers is to shift their philosophy from completely ignoring us to trying to sell us (through gem store skins and RNG boxes) the visual identity we should have had at release, it really ticks me off. Likewise for if I stop to think about how they love to taunt us by adding three new back skins with every update.

Makes me think we should try to get a little movement going, but I’m pretty sure that kind of thing would quickly lead to deleted threads and banned accounts. After all; the only time any mods pay attention to us is when we’re making a scene.

I’m throwing my vote in for this one. I loved this feature in the betas and really want it back.
