Because adding a tier of gear does not imbalance anything.

I am amazed that you are able to say something like that with a straight face.

Thoughts on Ascended Gear? [Merged threads]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Astralporing.1957

One thing that a lot of people misunderstood – the highest gear tier is and its going to be legendary (not exotics as some of you states). Ascended gear will not change that… Or any other tier.

Except the Legendary tier WAS the same as exotic statwise – which people were very fast to point out in all the Legendary EQ threads as an argument against making them more accessible. I guess that argument is no longer valid, and we’re free to ask for difficulty of getting Legendaries toned down significantly.

This is a huge problem for this genre. Too many people were introduced to MMOs with WoW so their ideal vision for MMOs is WoW. So they want all MMOs to be like WoW.

I started in on playing muds back in the early 90’s and even ended up writing code for Smaug mud in the late 90’s(google Dracones and smaugmud). The constant striving for better gear was a big part of those games.

The concept made its ways into MMO’s via Everquest which was based heavily on Diku mud concepts. So no, it’s not a WoW thing.

It’s mostly true with Diku line, but it wasn’t the only MUD model out there. And even in Sojourn (the mud that Everquest was mostly based on) eq treadmill was considered to be a huge problem, with several attempts being made to eliminate it.

Why do people fear 'power creep'?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

if we didn’t have a power creep when new content was released people would fly through it in a day or two and complain when there is nothing to do again

They will still do that – the new gear might give them few more days tops, no more. And the people that wanted interesting new content will still want one, because just putting in new, better eq and scaling content up to that gear tier is NOT interesting.

Progression is vital for every mmo.
It makes players feel like doing X/Y/Z each time they login.
Have faith in them and see.

Not progression. Expansion. MMOs need to grow, but it doesn’t necessarily mean vertical progression. That is only one of possible models – a model we were promised will NOT be in this game.

Will more powerful gear make you play more?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

No. A new and interesting content would make me play more. Gear progression is the exact opposite to that – especially if the new content from now on will be designed with the assumption that everyone has ascended(/better) gear.

Will asc. gear reduce value + purpose of crafting?

in Crafting

Astralporing.1957

Again, all this angst based on the stats of one pink ring. And we don´t even know if they are final.

Fact: current gear has a freely usable slot
Fact: ascendant gear doesn´t

Fact: ascendant gear has the slot upgrade already factored to stats.
Fact: ascendant “slot upgrade” values are better than exotic equivalent

Fact: infusion is useless outside of Fractal Dungeon

Unknown. Existence of different kinds of infusion (offensive, defensive) suggests that they do a bit more than just help resist Agony effect.

The new item tier of Ascended is good to hear. It’s only a 7.4% increase in stats/overall power, which isn’t to stay it’s a huge advantage at all (when factoring in WvW usage).

Lol, look at the increase in primary stat. That is Magic find in this case. Increase is about 40%, not 8. Please, tell me that isn’t much.

Mandatory Legendary

in Crafting

Astralporing.1957

Still 100000000 times easier to farm the new armor/weapons, instead of going for Legendary. But okay.

This time, perhaps (and i’m not so sure about how easy it will be to drop one of the new ascended items).
But since they already started the eq progression spiral, eventually there will be a next tier. and next, and next, and next. And since they said that legendaries will always be bumped up to the top tier, it means that you simply have to get them. Preferably now, because if a new tier will appear that will be harder to get than current legendaries are (and with item progression started that is basically a given, eventually), you can bet that acquiring legendaries will be adjusted accordingly.

A possible (flawed, but possible) solution

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

The solution in my eyes is to take away this uncertainty. Have Anet go on the record and say “ascended will be the highest tier of armor for the forseeable future.” Better yet give us a concrete amount of time, and make it long. I’m not against gear progression in principle. Maybe years down the road you release an expansion that raises the level cap and new gear will be necessary. But to do this three months after release is too soon.

Nope, that wouldn’t be enough, since at that point i just wouldn’t believe them. If they said “there will be craftable equipment equivalent statwise to the ascended that will cost in mats no more than twice/three times as much as exotics (with mats equally easily obtainable in game)” and then followed through and actually did that, now that might restore some of the lost credibility. Some.

I just want them to say something. If a red came here and posted, “Don’t worry, guys, this is just one final tier to smooth out the gear spectrum.” I would stop my concerns there.

And you would believe them? After all, they have already broke their promises with this one tier – why would you think they won’t do it again, and again, and again?

Legendarys are over the top

in Crafting

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

You are forgot one thing. Legendaries has nothing to do with story or endgame. They are just awesome looking weapons which are kitten expensive. You are acting like if they were some big part of story line or like everyone should have one. NO

That argument is no longer true. Legendaries have been announced to always be “top-tier”, adjusted statwise with each new item iteration – therefore, they are a must for anyone that wants to avoid eq treadmill. To avoid a feature we’ve been promised won’t ever be in this game.

With one badly thought-out update legendaries from vanity items moved into a required eq group.

Why don't transmute stones allow us to look the way we want?

in Suggestions

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

I really don’t like this idea. If you make a warrior or elementalist you gotta look like one. It’s not about PvP (although I understand the point) it’s about common sense. The gear we have is carefully crafted (no pun intended) to fit within the themes of the professions that can use them.

…sorry, you lost me there. Carefully crafted? Have you looked at the same armor sets i did? If you look at lot of the light armors, they don’t say “mage” to me anymore than a trenchcoat says “ranger” or “thief”. Heavier armors do fit the warrior and guardian images, that’s true, but then the iconic warrior archetypes are not restricted to knight types, and could easily be wearing medium armor. Or at least those that look reasonable (some don’t).

Basically, some (not all) of the heavy armor designs do not fit all of the classes, and there are stripperiffic female outfits that do not fit any classes at all. I don’t think that’s a reason enough to prohibit people from switching design styles between armor categories however.

More armor designs would be good as well, of course.

Why I think teleport costs are unreasonably hight

First they create mechanics to discourage easy long-range travel.

Like what? Examples please.

…have you read the topic at all? The cost for waypoint travel is just such a mechanic – it’s there to discourage you from using them as much as possible.

Legendaries: worth getting?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

Not really. Most of the legendaries (yes, I am including the Greatswords in it) are meh as far as looks go. Their main use is to be a bling that tells others “I am a farmer”. The only other reason you might want to go for one is that not all weapon types have wide selection of skins.

I’ll have to agree with the OP on this one. All races can be all classes therefore the models are already in game. I’m thinking the transmutation stones are bugged and broke!

Of course the models are already in the game – Equipment Preview option proves that beyond doubt.

Official Response: Drop Rate of Legendary Precursors

in Crafting

Astralporing.1957

Randomness is the only sure way to keep legendary weapons legendary in rarity. It is abundantly clear that there are an amusingly large number of people with the time and dedication to get every component other than the precursor who would all be running around with legendary weapons by now if there was less randomness involved, thus putting them firmly outside the realm of legend.

So, in other words, in your opinion time, skill and dedication should be less important than luck?

November 15th Massive Update: Precursors Addressed?

Astralporing.1957

Unfortunately, their RNG system for precursors has been implemented and can not be undone or changed without getting people extremely upset.

I don’t see a problem. People are already extremely upset.

Granted, there are people upset about the system in general, but a lot of people who already used a lot of their time/gold would feel even more cheated. Even the players who legitimately got a precursor from the mystic forge would be hurt that they could have used their gold/time on any new system or change they implement. The damage has been done and Anet is going to have to stick to their guns on these weapons.

“We found out we’re going in a wrong direction, but we have to stay the course!”

The idea that a bad design should remain unchanged, because there are already people that either exploited it, or have fallen victim to it, is ridiculous. It has also nothing to do with “fair”.

Trahearne

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

I just don’t understand why they have made the Kormir mistake again. In the Prophecies, we were the main hero. In Factions, we were helping major plot NPC’s (Togo, and to a lesser degree Mhenlo), but still we were on the center stage. In Nightfall, we kept helping Kormir and fixing all her mistakes, so in the end she should get the whole glory and reward. Trahaerne is not so disaster-prone as Kormir, thankfully, but still seems to exist only to steal the spotlight from the player. That is not a good design.

Frankly, i have similar problems with Destiny’s Edge members as well. I just don’t see why there’s so much plot importance on them. I get it that it was supposed to be symbolic, but playing a nanny to a group of angst-filled kids seems to play too much important part of the game.

“What is your story?” the game asks us, and yet soon we are shown, that the story we’re playing is not really ours.
