The question that results from this is what will happen when armor and weapons are released. Their upgrade slots are used for runes and sigils respectively. If anet does not create a second upgrade slot for ascended armor and weps specific to the infusions then they risk either removing the ability to use runes and sigils for ascended armor, or force conformity where specific runes will be build into the armor sets with no ability to change them.
It was originally suspected that this is why they started with jewellery accesories – to give them time to update the code to support two slots (they admitted they had a problem with that) before armor and weapons are introduced. On the other hand, seeing as they are limiting build options across the board, it’s entirely possible that they will just give us hardcoded rune/sigil equivalents that support only a very limited number of builds.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Well … this is true for a lot of items, especially the trinket slots. Before ascended there wasn’t even an exotic backpack for example, and there’s still no exotic breather. Across the board, stats are “missing”. As far as traits go, some stat pairs don’t always make sense.
But I don’t see that as a bad thing necessarily. It means you’ll have less options to build a min-max character, which, overall, is better for the game. Balancing and designing around min-max is very boring. In many cases, reducing options increases creativity.
While I agree with you to some extent, you wrote that the game is still lacking some cases, and that’s the point of this topic
Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. One of the best books in the french language was written without the letter “e”. Adding limitations to gear choice makes for more original builds.
Quite the opposite. It just makes everyone play the glass cannon.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
If you look closer at what we have now, you will realize that a shift from horizontal to vertical is already happening, and happening fast. How, you likely wonder? There are only a few ascended type items so far, ater all?
And yet, what has been introduced up to this point shows us that Anet (for some unexplained reason they refuse to share with us) has already started to limit the breath of options by removing from highest tier most of the viable stat sets. The direction of progress is no longer sideways. It’s only up, and very narrow.
Horizontal progression in GW2 is entering now its agonal stages.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Adding the missing sets can’t really be that hard, now can it? If the devs just ran out of images and names for the stuff, let them just go with (non-Unique) classic [prefix] [eq type] of [suffix] naming methodology and some generic icons.
If the lack of items is not just a result of not enough T6 mats (for mystic forge backpack recipees) or plain forgetfullness however, but a design decision, an announcement is absolutely necessary. And it is needed now, not in half a year.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
and why the is no food for healers and tanks?
Cause this not WoW and there isnt supposed to be Healers and Tanks. There is supposed to be DPS, Support, Control. Not DPS,Tank, Healer. This is not WoW.
Looking at the currently available ascended eq, i’d say that the GW2 Trinity is now DPS, Tank, Farmer. Support and Control are apparently no longer valid approaches.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
If there is a problem with well over a half of currently existing stat sets, and due to that problem Anet is going to discontinue supporting builds based on those sets, then they do have to tell us now. We need to know whether we can still continue waiting for those sets to be introduced later, or should we start already looking for different builds, based on significantly reduced options that already exist for ascended (third of whose are MF-based, so not really viable for normal non-farming builds).
Remember, remember, 15th of November
But I still don’t see getting Ascended Gear as a gear treadmill, as there are no more gear tiers after ascended.
Says who? They promised only no new tier in 2013. They did also say they will be introducing eq with better stats within already existing tiers. So it’s very likely that the new tier will start to appear as soon as january 2015, or that “better, improved” ascended eq with increased stats will see the light of day in 3 months from now. Or tomorrow even (though this is not very likely). All of those would be fully following the devs promises we got so far, and their stated design goals for the future.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Could someone link me to the direct quote or post stating there would be ways to gain Laurels through achievement points?
There isn’t any – they even said that it’s very possible that the rewards for other achievements will be a separate system
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Or perhaps they’re leaving the main stat combos for exotics, so that the ascended gear isn’t a hard and fast replacement for an optimized exotic build.
Except they did make Berserker version, which runs against any possible reasons i can think of to not include knight (etc.) sets. So, it seems that at least some optimized builds are perfectly okay, while other builds are not for unfathomable reasons.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Way to reward people that did not earn their way to high level fractals the ability to run high level fractals. All this has proved is if you cry and complain enough you can get your way.
And how exactly is that a reward, seeing as they get all the difficulty of the higher fractals, but the drops limited to their actual level anyway? And they still advance with their old rate.
The only reason why such people might want to run at higher levels is because there is noone at lower ones to group with. It’s still best for them to stay as close to their real level as possible.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Hmmm, fair point. I wonder if they consider the combination of damage and durability overpowered then?
Or are they just being lazy with not implementing a Knight’s Ascended option?
More likely they are playing only burst thieves and warriors, so they don’t consider other options important. Besides MF of course – we cannot possibly forget the best stat in the game, after all.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
I was supprised at how low the laurel cost for ascended gear is. I got my first laurel daily by just playing the game. I figure I can continue to play how I like to play and after a month I’ll have a near guaranteed item upgrade.
I have eight characters. Getting ascended eq for all of them this way is not reasonable, so i guess i will still be forced to farm fractals. And even then i’ll be forced into changing builds, because most of those i’m using now are not included in ascended tier.
So, this upgrade has changed nothing for me, really. It just enforced the idea that the ascended eq is supposed to be mindnumbingly boring grind. And that for some reason is Anet’s definition of fun.

Getting collector weapons and top tier armor took less effort than getting one exotic eq in this game (and i’m not even talking about ascended).
As someone who obtained 30 HoM points and has one of five characters donning exotic armor, I’m going to have to disagree with you on this one.
…um… what? I could easily get my char to cantha and get them lev 20 armor within an hour from rolling a new char. Without using any advantage from previous chars. in fact, I could do it well before i was even level 20 (which was doable in a day-two easily)…
Not sure why would you consider it to be hard. If you do, i’m surprised how did you manage to get even a few HoM points, less alone 30.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Then run FotM. What exactly is it you people want? What other MMO hands out top-tiered items for nothing?
GW1 – and it was good.
Funny, because I had to work for every single weapon and suit of armor displayed in my Hall of Monuments. I guess I missed the “Free Best Gear in the Game” Vendors in Lion’s Arch. Bummer, because that could have saved me a ton of time.
What HoM weapons have to do with BiS eq? Getting collector weapons and top tier armor took less effort than getting one exotic eq in this game (and i’m not even talking about ascended). Especially after Factions, when you didn’t even need to do Droks run anymore to get to the vendor. Unless you meant literally ’for nothing", in which case you were strawmanning and should be ashamed for it.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Yeah Aisina.. Thats what i was getting at.. I play the game a ton. I play on many different alts – I do what the group needs. Hey we’re doing AC and we dont have an ele yet? guess what – Ill play ele!
But like you said. Dailys on the account dont help me gear everyone. I’m full exotic on 6 toons so far – It will be 8 before I ever consider their “end game” legendary skins. I was happy with that call. I’m NOT happy to take 6 months to get every toon on par.
=(Then run FotM. What exactly is it you people want? What other MMO hands out top-tiered items for nothing?
GW1 – and it was good.
ANet is giving you the traditional method to obtain them (run dungeons), and they’re giving you an alternative, casual-friendly method of obtaining them, long-term though it may be.
We didn’t ask them for neither. We were perfectly okay with the exotics, and the multiple way we could have obtained them, thank you very much. We didn’t want Anet to take what they’ve already done (and done well) and hrow it in the dustbin to placate 1% elitists that won’t be satisfied by it anyway.
Not to mention Anet apparently used this as an excuse to narrow the number of supported builds (seeing as half of them don’t have their ascended eq).

You don’t need ascended item in wvw. The 10 stat increase won’t save your life.
If the ascended items are not important, then we can safely remove them from the game, right?
Remember, remember, 15th of November
This is only the first stage of getting Laurels. They said they will add more ways to get them in the coming months.
But will they add more alternate ways to get ascended eq? Like by crafting, for example?
I know, crafting being actually useful is a novel idea…
Since release a large amount of people have been using crafted exotics, and still are today. It seems vaguely useful…
Only because there are still slots that don’t have ascended equivalents. And only because Anet forgot about more than half of useful stat sets when making ascended. First will not last forever. Second i hope is going to be fixed eventually. Then there will be no point for exotics at all.

You are missing the point.
This game isnt designed for the Holy Trinity: Tank/healer/Dps roles.
You are missing the point as well. There are a lot more builds missing than only healing power, so don’t get fixated on HP only and lose sight of a greater picture.
Edit: This is not a new problem – it was here since November 15th. I’d really, really like someone from Anet to finally address it instead of pretending it doesn’t exist or is not important.

To people who are complaining about combo and other dailies. Find some friends.
If the combo kills were reliably being counted for achievement, you might have a point. Unfortunately at the moment it seems a bit random.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Right now, the game is unplayable for anyone that is not lvl80 in exotics. Even in zones
where you are not downleveled, you’re still much weaker since the patch, since the stats
you got from leveling, have no effect on your skill damage right now. Only stats from
gear and from boons affect your skill damage. Our characters are weaker than the ‘god-like’ ones they were before the patch?
No, on lower level zones you are much weaker than normal characters were before. When they corrected for the godlike ones, they went too much the other way for anyone that wasn’t max level/stats already.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Because this game isn’t about Tank/Healer/DPS roles.
This game’s combat system is based on Damage/Control/Support.
And i guess this is why the knight, rampager and carrion sets are also missing?

The second time you do know it’s coming, right?
…and the first time it’s not going to kill you, just down you.Well, some pointer on how to dodge it would be nice.
Watch the mob damage bar. Watch all the other players. Keep a crystal nearby. When you see deathray attack and the damage bar suggests that it’s the last one, grab a crystal and wait. Or just dodge – it CAN be dodged if you time it right.
The one throwing a crystal might have more problems, but then also know exactly when to dodge, so should be okay as well.

I would love to know just enough to decide whether I should do my daily today or wait.
The daily is somewhat of a cornerstone for my playing. Every day some character gets assigned to do either all of it or the difficult part of finding fifteen specimens. They are awaiting new, different challenges eagerly.
Do all of it except for the last tier in one category (preferably gathering). That way, if the patch is still not in before you are going to sleep, you will be able to finish it fast. If the patch gets in and daily changes so much it would need to be done from scratch? You still got the xp for partial achieves.

Hehe, common misconception.
Explain what guild progression there is in WvW? There is nothing that coordination does in WvW that a zerg doesn’t overcome. It’s truly, truly empty game design.
This game is shallow as an MMO. There’s really no getting around that.
Lol, you obviously don’t play much. Organized guild groups eat random unorganized zergs for lunch. To overcome organized play with just numbers you need several times more people. It’s not seen that much in top tier servers, where there’s a lot of organization on every side, but in t4/5 where guilds and casuals meet on daily basis the difference is very, very easy to notice.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
It will launch at some point before 23:59pm PST. Anet is based on the West Coast, so as long as they launch it before midnight PST, it’s still considered to be January 28.
It’s great that they give dates according to where they’re situated, it might even appear to make sense. However, a huge part of this game’s player base (half by rough estimation) is located in non US timezones.
Those players will see the 28th and they wont think, “oh, wait, ANet is West Coast so that means according to timezone differences…”. No, a player will see the 28th and obviously expect the content on that date, they’re 28th. When the update finally hits the 29th, the non US players will feel cheated.
Yes because a company is supposed to give a date/time for every timezone in the world to better accommodate the player’s schedule instead of just sticking to their own.
It’s a novel approach, i know, but they just might give an approximate GMT time. I’m pretty sure they already have the hour of deployment planned already.
I’m pretty certain, regardless, that in Europe it will be sometime after midnight, so 29th.

What does the Ascended gear have that would benefit you in WvW so much that you’d quit the game if you can’t have any?
It don’t really have a problem with ascended gear. I just want to be able to acquire it by doing wvw. It annoys me that i play against players in WvW who have better gear than me and play less WvW.
But that is my question…how is there gear any better than your in so far that it gives them any advantage over you in WvW? I seriously don’t know, that’s why I’m asking.
Ascended gear has better stats than exotic one. Currently rings and backpieces are accessible only from fractals. After the next patch rings and amulets (uninfused) will be supposedly accessible from doing dailies and monthlies (though specifics are not yet known). Backpieces for now will remain fractal-only.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Agreed, there seems to be a negative stigma when talking about “Raid’s”, And this is why I have mostly referred to it as “Large grouped instanced content”. As a GW1 Vet myself I want to see these instance’s because it’s what brought me to play Guildwars 1 basically since launch. Although I would like to see an increased group size such as the 8 or 12 in GW1. I think 10 is a realistic goal for this game as it is double the party size and can be pretty well balanced.
The general anti-raid argument, from what I understand, is that raids usually have their own gear progression, and offer the best gear in the games they are in. This is true, but if large grouped instanced content was introduced in Guild Wars 2, it would make sense to have the exact same rewards (plus maybe different skins and some titles) as any other part of the game.
I believe most people wouldn’t have a problem with that.
Yes, that wouldn’t be a problem. Of course, if purely economical reason to play Raids would be eliminated, almost noone would play them. So, why should anet waste precious developer resources on content that would be used by a fraction of a percent of the community, if at all?
Remember, remember, 15th of November
Also, one more thing – for the “whole game is an endgame” to be true, instances simply cannot be better/more interesting/more rewarding than the rest of the game. If they are, then they become the endgame, and everything else can no longer aspire to that title. If they aren’t… then what’s the point? The number of players that would want to play them (already very small, especially in this, designed more for casuals, game) would be so low to make them dead content eventually.
Also, you seem to be mistaken on one point (the one that forms the basis of your whole reasoning) – “making the whole content interesting” can never be completed, because adding of new open content should never end.
Don’t fully agree here as they already have dungeons that are for level 80 only, kinda endgamey, but the rewards aren’t significant so it’s not really endgame.
Oh, i agree – i said already that the game is not quite at that point yet and requires rebalancing. Part of those rebalancing would necessarily be less emphasis on dungeons in the future.
Also, “no more rewarding” is not only no more fractal-type blunders with ascended eq, but also means “no better drop chances” as well. Restricted skins are okay, as long as they are alternate skins – not something that is visually just better than everything else.
(Hint: obsidian armor from GW1 was actually not that good as far as aestethics went)

Well there are some good commander indeed. Fact is, imho, commander shouldn’t be a “i’ve got gold so i’m a commander”, but “i’m distinguished myself in battle, i’ma. Commander”. Could ve been that after kill and conquered many enemies and fortresses, you get the elegibility, like a title or an achievement. Or something like that.
There are good commanders out there that happen to be very poor PvP players. Comes from those two things being based on different qualities.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
So what some people want a challenge WHY IS IT A PROBLEM FOR YOU?
I already answered that question – it enforces the concept of endgame content being limited to specific areas/activities. As a consequence, the rest of the game suffers.
In my opinion GW2 should move in exactly opposite direction (as befitting the “whole game is the endgame” motto) – making all the open world areas (especially the starting ones) more interesting, and equally interesting regardless of character level.
Even the 1-15 areas should have some content that would be interesting for 80 lev experienced players.
Dungeons and other instanced content should not be a preferred activity
So once that end-goal is completed “Making all open world areas interesting” What should Arena-net do? I’m almost certain that Arenanet has a few Dev’s disposed to working on dungeon and other instanced content. That being said the content they create would most likely not effect the team which is creating open world content. So why couldn’t Arenanet make both interesting open-world content and interesting instanced content (Raids,Dungeons,“Instanced Events”)?
Several reasons.
The resources are limited. Spending more of them for instanced content means less of them will be used for open world pve and WvW. I’m pretty sure introducing interesting big instances with significantly improved mechanics (as compared to what we have already) would require way bigger dev team that is currently dedicated to dungeons alone (assuming there even are any dungeons-only devs and programmers).
With current mechanics, any 10+ instances would default to zerging anyway. If any mechanics would be introduced to prevent/discourage such approach, they could also be used in normal PvE (and hopefully WvW as well, though that depends on specific mechanics used). If the mass zerg approach can be somehow solved (which it should anyway – it IS a problem), then there’s no point why everything else you’d want to have from instanced raid couldn’t be placed within open PvE as an event chain.
Come to think, if Zerg problem could be solved (and as i said it definitely should be), then WvW would be exactly what you would want – playing against other players is always more demanding than anything that game AI can throw at you, and WvW is already a place that benefits significantly from good organization and leadership. Improving it so a zerg is not the only (or just preferred) solution to all problems would make that dependency on organization and planning even better.

How about this; Gem cost to take a soulbound item; and make it account-bound (but here’s the genius bit) Soulbind on Equip!
So you pay to transfer it between characters; but have to pay again if you want to transfer it back/to someone else.
Food for thought – the new laurel-purchased item list we were allowed to see contained something named Binding Agent. Coincidence?

Earning is a player thing not a character thing, Anet doesn’t seem to have a clear design choice for this. Achievements for example, along with other things I could go research, but I’m lazy.
No, it’s a character thing. You perfected the skills on a given class to overcome the objectives… there’s nothing to say you could do the same on another class, so therefore you didn’t achieve it — your character did.
Seeing as you can now easily do everything on one char, but give legendary to another (or even sell it), where’s your point?

I do not have personally anything about Raids in general. I would not want to participate in those, because i find the idea of overthinking and overpracticing your strategies for the sake of a game to be boring, but i know that there are people that think otherwise. So, as long as this content would not affect me directly, i wouldn’t mind it being added – unfortunately it does affect me.
This game has been designed with a “whole game is the endgame” paradigm. This approach is something i like ind would want to be continued. Unfortunately, the devs made some mistakes (too much concentration on dungeon content, problematic level and loot scaling, underwhelming rewards not only from starting areas, but from open PvE areas on the whole) that went against that design. Now I’d want them to fix that mistakes, and improve on the open PvE content, making all the areas equally interesting for players (and thus avoiding funneling them into few endgame places).
In short, ideally i’d like GW2 to not have any element that you could point to and say “this is endgame content”. Baring that, i’d want such elements marginalized, and made into something that is not significantly more interesting than the rest of the world.
Raids are definitely endgame content. In the game i’d like GW2 to become (the one that would follow original developer promises), nobody would want to do those raids, because open world areas would be just so much more awesome.
You find the open world boring, and your solution is to make a separate type of content that would be more interesting. My preferred solution is to make the open world more interesting than any instances could ever be. Unfortunately, those two ideas just do not go hand to hand.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
what happens after ascended gear+infusion? they’ve said they wont introduce a new tier.
They did say though that they may introduce items with better stats within already existing tiers. So expect “Ascended… but Better!” items later on. And they won’t introduce a new tier… in 2013. In 2014 however…
And as for higher tier infusion stats… compare tier 1 jewels with orbs (or, better, with ascended tier embedded jewel equivalents from fractal rings). There’s a lot of “progress” space here.

And this is ultimately why I put so little credence in the max efficiency argument that anti-MF people put out there.
Too bad that it’s the MF crowd that puts the efficiency argument. I don’t care how efficient the other players in my group are – I do care whether they want to contribute to the group, or only to their purses.
Numbers aside, I think people hate it because it has a non-observable / verifiable effect. For example, if I increase my vitality by 10 points I get 100 health. 10 points in critical damage I do 10% more critical damage. I can see those. If I increase my magic find by 10 points it does what, exactly?
It increases your drop chance on getting better stuff by 10% (so, instead of, say, 0.01% of dropping a rare, you’d have 0.011% drop chance). At least it’s supposed to work that way, but at the moment seems to be bugged.

Of course, this is all based on the hypothesis that the playerbase is naturally skewed towards some play-styles that are represented by the armour types worn.
Considering that a single armor type can cover such different classes as engineer, ranger and thief, with significantly differing playing styles, that hypothesis doesn’t sound that correct to me.

Most likely due to a patch. It’s been noticed sometime ago that server resets and patches seem to disable temporarily whatever negatively influences drops for some people. If it follows the usual pattern, it all should return to “normal” in few hours.
