What happened to the no grind philosophy?

Astralporing.1957

Maybe we played different versions of this game but when I played the max armor was at 1,5k each piece (5pieces = 7,5k) and a rune of superior health was at around 100k, same for the sup rune of absorb. . Getting a req 9 weapon with 15^50 was relatively easy to achieve due to collectors but putting upgrades like + 30 +sundering vamp or zealous on it was a pain in the kitten because those upgrades were so expensive ( back in the days you couldn’t choose which part of the weapon you salvage it was luck based wether you get the +30 Health or 4 Woodplanks).

Clearly we did play different games, because the game I played had armors of max power on sale for 1 platinum per piece. A few examples:

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Ranger_Sunspear_armor
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Paragon_Elonian_armor
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Assassin_Imperial_armor

Also: I logged in this morning to check, a Rune of Superior Vigor is currently at 22 platinum.

It was up to about 50 at one point, but that was long ago, before they could be safely salvaged out of armor.

Unless you went for looks, everything was relatively cheap – but, what’s more, you could just buy it from a vendor. Some of really nice eq (max damage, with good, though usually not perfect bonuses, and great skins) you were even receiving as a preorder bonus.

In GW2 it would be like getting a set of respawnable, unsalvageable level 80 exotic cavalier (or similar not the best stat set) weapons with Volcanus-class equivalent skins just for buying the game. And vendors selling ascended eq for 1-2 gold (or cheaper) per piece. And we all know the chances of it happening here.

DR? (Diminished Returns)

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Thats true, but why now? why only after patch ppl start to complain about the loot!?

People have been complaining about bad loot since day 1 of the fractals. It isn’t new, and generally I don’t bother to answer those questions since it is just RNG and speculation. Some people find a precursor in that chest, and others get blues. Just the nature of RNG whenever you open that chest.

Perhaps it migh be wise to reduce the variance on that RNG then. When one person gets a precursor and everyone else gets blues, it is going to generate irritation at best, dissatisfaction, anger and severe diminishment of enjoyment at worst.

The Cantha Thread [Merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

Say that Cantha was reintroduced in an expansion, and one or two new races/professions were introduced, what might they be. I don’t remember of any particularly stand-out races in Cantha aside from the Tengu, and they already have an area cordoned off for use as a main city on mainland tyria so i’m not sure how that would work.

That said, I think that several people hit the nail on the head, the three environments that really stood out were Kaineng city, which could be stunningly reimagined and redesigned with the new engine. As well as the Echovald forest and the Jade sea, which practically need no redesign. heck, most of the textures and objects they already have from the jade maw fractal, and some of the monsters from both are present in GW2. I’m also thinking of how incredible it could be to do jumping puzzles in Kaineng city, as well as what kind of dungeons and world bosses could be added. Obviously many will want the return of The Deep and Urgoz’s Warren, but really the possibilities are endless.

The Tengu would almost have to be the new race if there was one. Thinking back, I’m not coming up with any other races that existed in the area to adapt unless you consider a “monster” race from the existing GW2 content (dredge/skritt/hylek etc). New classes would be difficult as well as “thief” pretty much rules out assassin. Ritualist would make sense (yes there’s overlap with ranger, but that was true between Prophesies and Factions as well).

There were also Nagas, who were supposed to be ancient race as well. Tengu, of course, but i think that by background they have all left Cantha already (or at least everyone thinks so), and there was a strong dredge presence in Echovald. Don’t remember other major races that would qualify (yetis were way too primitive for that). As for classes, Ritualists would be definitely a good option – they were already a balanced class even in GW1, with access to healing, utility, damage and support, though i’d say they would be closer to engineers than rangers.
You could give them class-specific spirit mechanics, and summonable weapons and utility ashes for that unique look.

What is bad however is that, apparently, according to the fluff both the Jade Sea and Echovald have returned to their natural state by now. Those were really cool environments, and i’d be very sad to see them gone.

Laurels. Thoughts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

What bothers me is that it requires an uninterrupted 1h per day (time for daily + time for monthly roughly divided across the 20 days) x 20 days streak. I am fully aware that the developers have more ways to obtain items planned out for us in the future. But is this a good start?

For whom? Players? Not so much. Developers however…
It’s rather obvious that devs are doing everything in their power to make ascended eq hard to get, while at the same time creating illusion that they are fixing their FotM-introduced mistake. If you look at it that way, then the laurel system is working perfectly – there’s no way anyone’s going to get a single amulet before at least 20 days passed, with 50 days more for two rings. This of course means that noone that can do FotM will buy rings with laurels, even if they don’t like Fractals. And of course backpacks are still FotM-only. It’s extremely likely, that any new pieces, when they appear, will be also achievable through some gating system only at least at first.

The absence of ascendants that can be obtained through other, more casual-friendly means (vendors, crafting, TP) is significant.

In other words, their “solution” to heir old promise that grinders will not have significant advantage over casuals is to make it an equally tedious grind for everyone.

A lot of people have a job. But do you deserve to get more while doing less in an MMO because real life gets in the way?

Oh, no. I’m perfectly okay with you having it even easier.

I have no clue what you’re even trying to say with this post. You just seem like another angry person.

People tend to get that way when a company pointless murders a game they like simply because their monetization department deemed it a good idea. :-P

@OP: Anet already stressed that they wanted to fix everyone getting funneled into FotM… its just taking a REALLY long time. It took them 2 months just to get out one other method of getting ascended gear, so it will probably take a full year to get us back to the point that this game was at prior to the Nov 15th release.

And that’s when they’ll spring a new tier on us.

armor to be cheaper to replace than repair?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Astralporing.1957

Astralporing.1957

Cheap armor is easy to replace. Good armor costs a bit more money and effort though. When levelling it’s usually not efficient to look for a good armor, because you’re going to change it soon anyway – and by the time you have accumulated enough damage to warrant repair, you have already likely outlevelled that armor and are ready to change it for a new one anyway.
This is completely normal.

What happened to the no grind philosophy?

Astralporing.1957

My original post said 10% increase from ascended over exotics. It was a response to someone’s past post saying something a bit outrageous like 29%+. So yes, I’ve done the math already.

Stat increase of about 10% (which is what we have now – the 5% increase assumed in the calculations you quoted is actually very conservative, and way lower that the increases on 4 types of items we saw so far) results in about 28-29% damage increase for berserker sets (easiest to compare). So yes, cumulative advantage of one set over the other can reach +29% in some categories.

As far as ascended vs exotics, right now it’s not even an issue because only a few parts from ascended are available.

That’s like saying driving towards a cliff is not an issue because we didn’t go over it yet.
The best ways of dealing with problems is NOT trying to clean up after they happen, but to predict and prevent them beforehand.

They are bringing new rewards for WvW this month, maybe even a way to acquire Ascended gear without leaving WvW? We’ll have to wait and see about that.

Wait and see. Wait and see. We hear that every day, but can we really afford to wait? If it all goes at the current speed, we’ll get the all (or not even all) avenues of getting ascended gear right when the next tier is rolled out. And then everything will start again from scratch.

How are you so sure there’s going to be a next tier and not just better rarities of infusions?

If not next tier, then level cap raise. Or the new eq with better stats within already existing tier (they already raised possibility for that one). Specifics do not matter. What does matter is that so far it seems Anet is just unwilling to make top tier eq easily accessible, and would prefer us grinding for it, and that if we just wait, we will not see any improvement, Quite the opposite.

Is there anything else we can do other than wait?

We can try to change developers’ minds. Even if it’s going to fail, for me it’s still better than waiting and doing nothing while the core elements of the game are slowly being twisted away from what i bought this game for, into a shallow version of a average WoW-alike grinding MMO.

Jennur’s, much like everything else, became a joke after the 7-hero updated. However, back at Nightfall release…I’d rather have died than do that mission more than once, especially on Hard Mode. It was like trying to kill Rotscale at release.

Definitely not that hard. I found it much, much easier than Eternal Grove, for example (the hardmode version).

What i’m trying to say is that it’s good to have more than one visual hint to get a sense of your surroundings in a chaotic place that is the battlefield, instead of relying only on one. If you can’t see that then i’m wasting my time.

It’s funny, because i literally don’t see that. As in “i don’t even notice what armor my opponents are wearing in WvW, because i’m concentrating on other details”. Looking at armor is the least informative of all possible methods, and, what’s more, concentrating on it slows down identification by other means. Especially, since (as has been mentioned several times in this topic) there are armors that look as if they belonged to other cathegory, and can be easily mistaken unless very carefully observed (and known beforehand. And I bet almost noone can identify all the skins that are in the game atm).

POLL: Would you like level cap to be raised?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Astralporing.1957

“I hope we’ve been clear that GW2 is not a game with virtually no stat progression in it like GW1 was. That’s why GW2 shipped with a higher level cap, and with a hard separation between PVE and PVP.

“In GW1 we never advanced the level cap through four campaigns/expansions. The game design didn’t allow for it. But GW2 was designed without those restrictions, and we’ve always expected that we will someday raise the level cap in GW2.”

-Mike O’Brien

Level cap increases are coming, folks. If you enjoyed GW1 for its level and equipment cap, I have bad news for you: Apparently they were only there due to technical/design limitations. GW2 bravely leads us into the revolutionary future of MMO’s without the restrictions of level caps (sarcasm)

Except of course that there are design limitations that make raising level cap unwise, just like in GW1 (trait system, for one, was definitely designed for only limited advancement with a definite cap).

Sorry, but I have a really hard time accepting that the amulets are a ‘grind’. You get laurels simply by playing the game. The daily doesn’t even require anything special outside of just doing what you’d do every day

You have to play every day. You must log for the 30mins-1hour every day (20 mins is only if you specifically grind for dailies.not if you “achieve them through playing normally” -and even then not everyone can do it that fast), instead of, for example, skipping monday and playing 2 hours on tuesday. Even if you do every daily and monthly, it takes too long. If you decide to play on the weekends only (as many players do), you are completely out of luck.
The game forces you into a repeating a set of actions over and over again, over a long time, purely for getting a stat advantage. That is a very definition of gear grind.

I think you miss the point. Anet was placed in a position I don’t particularly envy. They have a bunch of players like me, who are happy to play for just cosmetic differences. Then they have a million or so players who play other MMOs who aren’t. So what should they do?

Not sell the game based on a false manifesto they never intended following.

Yes. Mind you, GW2 is not a bad game – in fact it is quite good. It’s however not the game that was advertised, and not the one i thought i was buying (or wanted to buy). It is aimed at a completely different crowd than the one it was advertized to.

If Anet came clean and said straight what game they were going to make, it would have been much better. Who knows, i might even have bought it anyway. I certainly wouldn’t feel cheated.

Totally support the OP here, as it is really stupid not to be able to wear all kinds of armor. It limits the game, is one thing.

The other is: To all the people who QQ about “It would ruin the game if an ele wore heavy armor”- What? Is your fun in the game dependent on someone else’s armor? You better quit right away. Does it bother you so much that someone else wants to be a knight while still casting? Why don’t you find another group then? You’re not forced to gear your ele with heavy/medium armor. But what you are forced to is gearing your ele with light armor. Enjoy the restriction.

So by your logic, I suppose you’d be ok to transmute town clothes on top of armor?

You could do it already in GW1. Never had a problem with that.
Of course, it was disabled in PvP arenas.

Fail already, you cannot tell at a glance if someone is Thief or Ranger, and there is a world of difference in the two. Making an ancient argument that has never really applied except as a crutch for some "PvP’ players. I would hate to see people like this try to PvP on an EQ2 server, not knowing if that plate wearer was Templar, Inquisitor, Shadowknight, Berserker, Paladin or Guard. Honestly, animations, weapons, behavior tell you far more than any visual armor does in most games. You know.. that “skill” thing PvP’rs like to boast about.

You can tell at a glance that he’s one of 3 possible things. Still better than one out of eight.

And in that time you identified the guy as one of the 3 classes looking at the armor, i looked at his weapon and attacks and identified his class without caring what armor he was wearing. Or made an attack and looked and class icon after target bar appeared. Hell, he could have been naked and my method would still work. Yours wouldn’t.

As far as I’m aware the only way to get ascended items is to craft them in the mystic forge, do fractals, or get laurels from dailies/monthlies.

And back items are the only ones you get from the forge.

You still need drops from fractals to craft them. backpacks are from fractals, amulets for daily laurels, rings can be gotten either way. Other ways of getting those eq do not exist for now.

For WvW I think it’d be even better! Think about it. You could be a squishy running around in heavy armor and people would leave you along thinking you were a warrior or guardian and go after the squishies… XD Or! You could be a bunker guardian in cloth armor who everyone tries to kill but they can’t! HILARIOUS!

And if someone tried to recognize your class based on armor, and not weapons and skills used, he’d deserve the fail. Weapons and skills are way more distinct, and let you identify a class exactly. Armor would let you at best identify an armor group, which is not so useful.

As I’ve stated before Arenanet want’s to increase the cap

Wanted to, at one point. There were a lot of things they wanted once (or said they wanted) and changed later.
Also, when they said that there will be new levels, situation was different. Top tier eq was supposed to be easily acquired – and there was to be no item progression. They didn’t really know how their trait system would work, their scaling system was highly theoretical, and so on.

There are lot of reasons why, even if they once considered it a good idea, it may not be a good idea now.

Yeah, i know, they didn’t really keep that promise, but i can still hope.

I don’t think they ever said anything of the sort. It should have been clear the moment that there were 80 levels announced that the game was going to be very different in terms of character progression.

Guild Wars 2 takes everything you love about Guild Wars 1 and puts it into a persistent world that’s got more active combat, a fully-branching, personalized storyline, a new event system to get people playing together, and still no monthly fees.

What are the perceived negatives of raising the level cap? If scaling can accommodate level scale increases, I guess people are then worried about having to reacquire max stat gear. For the most part, the stat side of exotic gear isn’t that hard to obtain. The gear that requires the most cost or effort to acquire usually doesn’t offer a stat advantage over cheaper exotics, it’s all about the looks and those looks can easily be transferred.

Top tier is now ascendant, not exotic – yes, they aren’t all out yet, but ANet is not going to raise level cap until we get full ascendant set in the game anyway.

There won’t be any level increases until we have all Ascended gear out (and a reasonable amount of people wearing full Ascended) that will take a lot of time imo so we can discuss this again later…. It doesn’t make any sense to release some Ascended parts that aren’t level 80 and some that are 80.

Anyway on the topic at hand, I believe that the dynamic level adjustment makes adding more levels a no problem. I don’t see any issues with it and can’t see any serious arguments so far against it, other that the “it can be done without increasing the levels”, which is of course true, but even if they did add new levels how much of a difference would it make?

Exactly

Im not a big fan of leveling but in this game its so much a none ishue

Levelling itself is not a big issue (except for it not really adding anything to game). Reacquiring gear is.

4. Restricting people to specific armour types based on their profession is backwards, redundant, unnecessary and a tired concept that I’d expect to see from an MMO in 2004 or something. If I were in a mesmer irl (lol!), why should I not be allowed to wear armour or trenchcoats just because some magical rule says I can’t because I’m a scholar?

Maybe its something to do with spellcasters having problems making their gestures while burdened by full plate armor. Warriors not being silly enough to wear a dressing gown into battle. Thieves realizing the futility of trying to stealth in metal armor?

Some of the “dressing gowns” are far more movement-restricting than plate armor. Only a small subset of warriors wear heavy armor. Trying to stealth in a heavy trenchcoat is exactly as futile as in metal armor.
So no, it has nothing to do with that at all.

Orly? You’re going to sit there with a straight face and tell me that trying to move silently in a leather trenchcoat is just as difficult as wearing full plate armor? Metal greaves make the same amount of noise as leather boots? Sheesh. People will go to any lengths to defend their argument.

Ar you going to sit there with a straight face telling me that a long trenchcoat is a good clothing for stealth in wildlands? And most of the heavy armor is not full plate. Chain or all the metal-on-leather versions might be actually better for sneaking than something that snags on the ground, bushes, branches etc. And of course some of the light armor would be even better.

So again – being able to sneak in it well is not a reason for why thieves have access to some armors but not to other. If that was the reason, thieves would not be wearing trenchcoats.
And the fact that rangers and engineers have access to the same group of armors makes your point moot anyway. The only common point of those three classes is the armor they wear, and only because it’s the result of an arbitrary decision.

For example. Someone using all Knight’s gear may want Knight’s ascended, BUT, using the ascended rings combo power/toughness/critdamage (Cavalier’s) you can substantially boost your critdamage without needing to resort to using berserkers or valkyrie gear. It’s a huge increase in damage (8% crit dmg per ring) and defense (103 toughness per ring), these blow Knight’s out of the water for a majority of builds. Most likely a person with Knight’s will be lacking crit damage, so these rings are incredible.

First of all, high crit damage is irrelevant if you cannot crit. Crit chance is based on precision, so any sensible +Crit damage eq must include Prec stat. Cavaliers might at first glance seem to be a good combo, but due to the decreased crit chance in fact their crit damage is wasted. A mix of Knight and Cavalier eq might be nice, though.
Second, some traits in many classes proc off crit effects. Sometimes crit chance is important to you not for increased DPS, but because of those additional effects. In such case exchanging crit chance for crit damage is again not a good idea.

Maybe in PVE, but in any sort of PVP format, no.

This.

I would even say that this would be a big no-no for WvW. A huge part of learning in PvP is knowing what your opponent is at a glance.

sPvP does not have Transmutation stones. It might be a problem in WvW… though to be honest i always identify opponents by the way they move around, their weapons and skills they use. Not by armor. Seriously, the differences between classes within armor bracket are too big to use their look as basis for identification.

Nope, not gonna happen.

Armour types is one of the defining points of professions. It’ll never change. Deal with it.

It’s rather dubious statement, seein as for example engineers, rangers and thieves look exactly the same. And i never considered trenchcoats to be their defining point (nor stripperific female outfits define mages, no matter how some people would like it to be so).

Ok. full stop, followed by sanity check.

The ability for the price of precursors to rise is not infinite. The ability to make gold IS infinite over time. The argument that one rate will not overtake the other is flatly untrue. There comes a point (and for several precursors I’d say we’ve already reached that point) where the average cost of creating a precursor via the Mystic Forge is less than the asking price of the item.

Of course. What you did not include in your reasoning however is that the average price to craft a precursor is also rising.

You see, it wouldn’t be so much problem if prices were lower. Month per piece is too long even for one char – it means that as soon as you finish equipping your char, a new tier drops in or level cap is raised. And that assuming you won’t even try to go for other rewards.

We do plan on adding more stat combo to existing ascended item types as well as adding more stat combos to new types.

Thank you for replying. I’m glad to hear that. Could you perhaps give us a hint how fast should we expect it, or is it too soon yet for even a vague estimate?

ANet has to balance laurel rewards in relation to running fractals.

Any method that makes getting ascended pieces more than twice/three times as hard/costly as getting exotic pieces should be made easier/cheaper. Both laurel and fractal methods fail that big time.

I do not understand why Arenanet is hesitating to introduce the recipes for jewelers to produce ascended items. It would solve so many problems. And we are waiting over two months now for it.

I think the answer from the developers would be: “because we want you to work a while to get the ascended gear and crafting is instant-satisfaction”.

If they really think that way, all they need to do is say it.
Not that i agree with you – crafting requires materials, you know. If they don’t want mats to be easily bought, all they need to do is to add vials of mist essence to the recipe (though i would expect them to make the vials more easily available then – for pristine/normal relics, for laurels – though NOT 30…, from drops outside fractals).

Nobody will buy ascended rings with laurels.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Astralporing.1957

Honestly, the prices are around one month for a ring+infusion, all you have to do is play the game casually and you get it for free, nothing has been nerfed by the arrival of laurels, they are an addition.
That one month looks like a grind now cause everyone already has lvl 80’s and most are in full exotics. But for a new player, by the time he gets lvl80 and exotics he will already have a nice pile of laurels (unless your do powerlvling and twinking).

Oh, please. It certainly didn’t take you 3 months (2 rings and amulet) to get to level 80 on your first char, right? And for any next character it will be even faster…
Doing it this way seriously discourages people from playing more than one char, or to experiment with their builds. It is a clear message – “pick one char, one build, and stick with it forever”.
This is actually in many ways worse than having them accessible only in fractals (because it’s now even less likely we’ll get a sensible alternate way to get them).

why do people hate magic find?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Astralporing.1957

Magic find feels neccessary because if you’re farming, you want the most out of it the fatest way, so you have to get MF.

And then they nerf the drops.
Honestly, the approach Anet has to farming is just too inconsistent. On one side they support MF eq, going as far as putting 2 different MF builds among the ascended (while lot of other useful builds were omitted). On the other, anytime you start actually getting nice drops, they nerf it to the ground within hours.

In short, people who are ignorant of themselves like to blame numbers over skill, a few seconds over a few minute.
As a wise man once said,

It’s much easier to blame something you don’t understand than to excel in it – Lafiele

…i don’t think there is any reason to be proud of excelling in selfishness, is it?

Suddenflame, it’s the topic about Ascended gear. If you want to write about warrior, then please go to Warrior subforum or take it to PMs. Thanks.

Thorquist, perhaps you can edit the title of this post to state somewhere that armor combinations are missing? “Ascended amulets and ascended items overall” is pretty vague and doesn’t convey much. Much appreciated!

Almost the whole first post is about it as well as most of the posts in the topic and the current one invites to vaster discussion about Ascended gear in general And since a moderator wrote in your topic, that it was send to the team I think it’s enough

Until i see the team’s reaction (in the form of clear info about what we should expect) i’m going to treat this as a standard mod speak for “we’re closing this thread because it’s inconvenient, and funneling the talk to the least-appropriate topic so it’s much more likely to be overlooked”. It wasn’t the first time it happened, after all. Lot of other important cases have been already treated like that (and then conveniently forgotten).

What I don’t like about it is that it is completely account-based. I have 3 level 80 characters and I want a laurel necklace for at least two of them. Maybe even several of them for at least one char when I’m switching my gear…

Yes, the current time gating for getting ascended are completely unreasonable for people that want to have more than one char (or play with builds. or both). Neither current nor future methods should really be account-limited. It only discourages people from buying additional char slots.

Laurels make Ascended gear "OK"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Astralporing.1957

I was one of those people kitten off by your addition of Ascended gear, because I just don’t do Fractals. Now that dailies allow me to get Ascended gear, I’m “OK” with it.

I am not. With 8 characters i have, amulets alone will take me half a year. Which means that i’ll still need to grind fractals for rings (and backpacks…) just as i had before this update. In fact, after this update my expectations for getting ascended for my chars got even lower than they were before it.
And that is only if i’d want one eq set per character – i wanted to play with different builds, but i guess it’s no longer an option.

Until ascended become accessible through karma/crafting/open world drops and (last but not least) TP(!), nothing will change.

And of course of the stat sets i need for some of my chars, some are still missing.

The intention is probably just to make it less desirable than Fractals, so that you’ll stop whining about Fractals and just grind that instead. :P

(I’m kidding, white knights, chill out)

You may think you are kidding, but that’s exactly the feeling i got from this update.

There are more ways coming for acquiring laurels. For example through other achievements (these should be awarded retroactively afaik).

Quite the opposite – from what they said it’s very likely the retroactive rewards for other achievements will be a different system, not laurels.

Actually about 15% of the population finds making money very fun, irrelevant of the uses of that money.

Problem appears when the remaining 85% finds the ways the first 15% uses that money as not fun for them.

It is not a single player game. gathering obscene amounts of money by some affects not only them, but everyone else as well.

In real life this is usually a self-regulating process – if a small number of people gets too wealthy, it can lead to a “forced redistribution of wealth” (depending on scale and method, called robbery, riots, revolution, tax increase or nationalization).
This is not possible here.
