Avster.1935

The arguments against and for outfits have been going on for so long, I basically have a summary now,

Outfit Pros (User Perspective):
• Convenience: Easy to swap around
• Doesn’t clip (?)
• Doesn’t require transmutation stones to change looks

Outfit Pros (ANet Perspective):
• Easier to produce as clipping via mixing with other armor pieces are minimized.
• More profit for time spent (700 gems) – as opposed to spending more time to make it fit with other armors of the game for an additional 100 gems.

Outfit Cons (User Perspective):
• Lack of customization / everyone looks generic

Outfit Cons (ANet Perspective):
• Drop in the sale of transmutation stones from the gem store

If you look at the pros/cons from ANet’s perspective it’s clear as daylight why they are going with the outfit route. From a business perspective, it’s more money for time spent.

My personal opinionated response is the same as always …for a game that boasts in horizontal progression, i.e. Skin Wars 2. The lack of customization is in direct contradiction to what they are going for.

Oh, then the 1500 silk that I still need to gather in order to complete the ascended set for my main character must be all in my mind, as were the six months it took to even max my crafting as well as the other three months it took to craft the few pieces I do have. I’ll be sure to hop in and craft the remaining pieces now that I realize there’s no treadmill.

My friend, you made a choice in doing that. For approximately, 5% increase in stats – you decided to grind it out. I’ve been completely able to successfully complete all PvE activities with exotic gear and ascended weapons + trinkets. Heck, I even have 2 characters in full ascended, but that was through normal gameplay. I didn’t buy a single thing. I earned all the mats.

Also, since ArenaNet said that they won’t be releasing NEW tiers. You can rest assured when I said there won’t be any gear grinding.

Or did you mean skins? It looks like maybe you did, judging from these statements:

Yes I meant skins. Skins are GW2 end-game progression (along with the new Mastery system they will be rolling out)

If you think you’re going to get nine other people together on a regular basis to grind through raids for nothing more than the promise of a better skin, then you’re going to have to brace yourself for some disappointment.

I already have to rally guild members for when we do Guild Missions. To smoothly pass Guild Challenge, you need at least 10 people. So raids shouldn’t be a problem.

The hardcores can do it on a regular basis, I myself only do these type of things with friends – I’m in no rush to grind it out, since the content won’t disappear and the reward is only skins, so it won’t affect my gameplay in any way, shape or form.

Then you really have no idea of the connotations inherent in asking for a raiding system with exclusive rewards. I hate to break it to you, but many of us have played WoW at one time or another, and our shared experience brings certain expectations of what a raid is and isn’t.

I absolutely despise jumping puzzles myself, and I would have been happy to say so if someone had started a jumping puzzle poll on these forums. However, this poll was about raiding, so I stated my opinion on that. Yours may differ, and that’s OK. You’re probably not going to change my mind, and I doubt I’ll change yours. From the sound of it, you’re thinking of Elite Missions from GW1 when you say “raid.” Those are similar, but I wouldn’t call them raids.

I do. Just because I didn’t play it, doesn’t mean I haven’t spent time reading forum posts, etc.

Like you said, and like I have explicitly expressed, I do NOT want raids systems that are available in other games. I want GW1 Elite Mission. I call them raids, because that’s what we had in GW1, that was what raids meant for us.

I respect the knowledge and anguish of raids that some of you are bringing over from WoW, but that is not what we, GW1 Veterans are requesting for. Just like you know WoW, I know GW. With the way ArenaNet is running things, I highly doubt they would release content that will highly segregate the population.

Wildstar is the perfect example of what happens when you design content for a very loud and annoying vocal minority.

You are another one of those posters who post without reading the rest of the thread. Really sick of you guys.

1. Wildstar advertised itself for hardcore raiding
2. A lot of us want GW1-esque elite mission type raiding in GW2 with GW2 based rewards.
3. You CANNOT compare the small group 8-10 people raids we are requesting to other games.

Go back to the drawing board.

no, not having to make schedules for a game is one of the reasons I love GW2. I don’t want to play instanced content with randoms and I don’t want the situation where people have to wait for their guildies to play content.

You already have to wait for guildies for Guild Missions, what’s your point?

My first quote was answered by my second quote.

And to the question where those numbers are from i can ask you :
Are you new to MMOs ?

The latest where when Lotro canceld raids, but i read number like that in the
years i played Everquest 2 .. and you can google and find those number also
for WoW (http://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/1185107-How-many-WoW-players-actually-raid )
Heck in EQ2 it was normally just 1 single guild that has beaten the hardest raid
before we got a new expansion.

Also Raider are overrepresented in Forums, that why the numbers here didn’t
say anything. Our german CM just postet a while ago that only 1% of the
players post in the forums .. and i think 3 or 5% read it.

http://massively.joystiq.com/2014/07/03/turbine-raiders-make-up-the-smallest-player-group-in-lotro/#comments

Raiders comprise the smallest, by far, group in our game. PvMP players are far larger and even they are small. in fact together the two groups wouldn’t comprise 10% of the total player base and never have (this is important. it’s not a new thing, it’s a long standing historical fact).

Forum posters comprise a slightly larger group than the combined group of PvMP and Raiders. However, Raiders and PvMP players make up the overwhelming majority of forum posters (More than half. Though raiders are the smaller group of the two (PvMP/Raiders)). So you have a tiny group, inside a small group that is grossly disproportionately represented on the forums.

You do know you are comparing apples to oranges here right? We are not asking raids in GW2 to be similar to raids in other games, so I fail to see why you bring up such comparisons. I foresee, ANet to more or less follow GW1’s elite area approach to include both casual/hardcore groups.

This leads to the numbers you provided to be fundamentally different. So even if the numbers are correct regarding to raids in other games, it would be inapplicable in this scenario.

I should have rephrased my question. Are you new to ANet’s approach on their franchise?

You seem to be freaking out based on how OTHER MMOs have done raids, and that is NOT what we are requesting for in GW2.

EDIT: Also the fact that you didn’t provide a reply to my rebuttal against exclusive rewards, leads me to believe you agree to what I said (or just selectively quoted me, which leads me to believe you are a poor debater). So I don’t even know why you are carrying this conversation anymore.

FYI –
We already have somewhat of an elite vs. normal gear in sPvP.
Glorious vs. Glorious Hero’s Armor
We also have that in open world PvE.
Carapace vs. Luminescent

Would You Like 10-Man Raids (Poll)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Avster.1935

Okay fine. Here’s my explanation on why I don’t like raids:

Raids don’t actually NEED to exist. They’re just there to provide content that a large amount of players can enjoy together.

The problem is, not everyone has a large amount of friends to do this with.

Raids were meant to test teamwork on larger scales, and having to PUG that is a bit awkward at best.

Bolded point #1: And open world PvE events are…?
Bolded point #2: This is the same issue with Guild Missions, so you know which direction ANet is going towards. For your raid needs, you can join bigger guilds.
Bolded point #3: Never asked for massive large scale raids. Anywhere between 8-10-15 people should suffice. Pugs aren’t a massive problem, because there will be guides up within a few days, so we can direct them to that.

Healing classes suffer slightly in raids, especially raids that have more than 8 players in them. Why? Well, if you’ve ever played Ragnarok Online 2 and decided to go in one of its raids, you’d know that you had to deal with three parties of 6-8 players or so, and there usually wasn’t 3-4 healers, so it ended up being a clusterhell of people getting damaged and healing certain people who actually needed heals was annoying, especially when other people were healing those people, and you didn’t know who to heal and who not to heal.

Don’t have anything like that in GW2. Your entire paragraph here is not relevant to GW2.

Coordination decay. Like I said above, raids test large-scale teamwork, but, the more people you have, the more conflicting interests become a problem, causing coordination decay. Let’s say someone wants to go X direction rather than the fastest direction, usually if they have friends who joined the raid, those friends will tend to side with that person. This can cause an argument, and some players who like to speed run may end up killing the entire raid by forcing the players to fight something by going on ahead of the team and pulling an enemy to the raid group. I’m not a fan of speed runs, and never will be.

Same argument against what we have with dungeons in this game so far. Create your own party, go with your own crew.

Chances are the speedrun raid group will not be with the normal group anyway. We already have that with “lv80 speedrun” dungeon groups going on here.

Hardcore / Elites VERSUS Midcore / Casuals. The age old war between hardcore and elite players and the casuals/midcores really shines when discussing raid, and even playing said content. The reason why hard / extreme / savage content (Including raids) exists is because these elite and hardcore players want to be who they are in comparison to the midcore and casuals. This can cause problems for players who just want to explore the lore / places of the game. This is precisely why Final Fantasy XIV Developers are developing a “Story Mode” version of The Binding Coil of Bahamut, the hardest “Raid” in their MMORPG. I don’t like this war, and if you’re an elite, you shouldn’t either. What if ALL the midcores and casuals left? what do you get? About a 500-1000 players on the entire megaserver at any given time? That’s not a serious MMORPG anymore.

Have you read any of my other posts? I said I’m an advocate for Normal and Hard mode. Just like they had in GW1. So there will be no war.

Developer ressources are limited so we can’t have endless new content.

Right. How is your need for a particular content more justifiable against those who want raids?

Using those ressources to create content for only maybe 5% of the playerbase
leads to less new content for the other 95%.

Where are you pulling the 5% player base number from? At this point in time, if you look at the poll, 63% (126) are interested and 37% (75) are not interested. Obviously it’s reflective of those who have come to visit the official forums, and not that of the entire player base.

So you cannot objectively state there are more players who don’t want raids, as much as I can’t objectively state that there are more players that want raids.

And of course there is always the thing that raiders think they are better and
need to get “exclusive rewards”. So 95% will also maybe get less new armor skin
because the developers have to create “exclusive” stuff for those 5%.

Then there will be all the drama that people feel they are forced to play stuff
they don’t enjoy to get that exclusive stuff .. and so on and so on ..

And yes .. even if people here maybe don’t want a gear treadmill .. the words
“exclusive rewards” were used in most of the posts in the Raid-CDI

I’m going to self-quote the solution/argument I just posted on Blaeys.3102’s comment.

Now for your point #2,
- Think of it like this. The luminescent set that you can get in Silverwastes right now. It’s an upgraded skin reward, available for those who are willing to go the extra mile to earn it. Hard mode raid rewards can be something akin to this. So no, you don’t “have to do” it, because just as there are people who could care less about getting luminescent sets, there will be people who would care less about getting high-end dungeon skins.

Elite armor vs normal armor in GW1, ever heard of that?

And in the ends it comes down to something like : Why the hell should i play
that kitten if i don’t get better stuff .. and not : Oh .. playing that great content
is reward itself enough.
Or better said : Raiding itself sucks .. but i play it because i can show off my exclusive stuff .

Are you new to MMOs? Because it’s always been like this. Ask a veteran dungeon players why they run dungeons every day.

For your last point, nothing is mandatory in GW2. You can do other cool open world events, and enjoy those rewards.

I think a lot of us naysayers would be open to raids in GW2 if they made sure to avoid all of the things that make them such cesspools of hate in other games. To me, that means

  • They would have to be flexible. Set numbers create situations where friends have to make untenable decisions about who gets to raid with the guild and who doesnt. Im not saying let 50 people into a raid, but don’t set hard numbers either. Scaling from 8 to 15 makes the most sense to me.
  • They CANNOT be more rewarding than any other content in the game. Ive explained this above, but once again, greater reward turns it into something people will feel they “have to do.” There is no way around that – and GW2 doesnt really work that way anyway.
  • They cannot be the dev team’s primary focus. They have developed a fun game that the majority of us (i know Im making an assumption) really love. They need to focus efforts on ensuring the core elements of the game (open world, WvW, PvP, 5-player dungeons and fractals) are as entertaining as possible.

I realize you will most likely disagree with all or most of these points (which is fine – its a discussion), but these are the points you asked for – why we (or at least I) are against raids. If, however, they take a different approach from other games (ie, the three points I list above), I think you would find alot more people supporting the idea.

Actually, I agree with points #1 & #3 wholeheartedly,
- Flexibility can work like they have in dungeons (or maybe even better). Most dungeons are duo-able, even with a 5-party requirement. Similarly, with raids, they can have a 15-man raid, but doable by 10-man group. Raids inherently require a larger group of people. Think of the elite areas of GW1: Underworld, Fissure of Woe, Urgoz’s Warren, Domain of Anguish. People absolutely loved those – and is definitely doable by a number of people lower than the required amount.
- I do not want to be Raids to be the Dev’s primary focus. I just want it to be on their radar. There are many things that I like in this game, Open World PvE Events, Fractals & Dungeons (both are getting tedious now with lack of update), sPvP (I’ve been getting more and more active in this area of the game), more intricate jumping puzzles & WvW. Basically, I like the entire core game of GW2, and would like to have it improved upon, but I would also like to add Raids to that mix.

If the content isnt fun/enticing enough to stand on its own sans higher rewards, then adding higher rewards would just create a “have to do that” atmosphere – yet another element of raids that lends to the hate and toxicity I referenced.

The bigger issue is the group size flexibility, imo (must have for larger groups), but creating better rewards for something only a small percentage of the population wants to do is just as toxic – leading to the have/have not mentality that drove many of us (even previous hard core raiders like me) away from other games.

Im not against them adding more challenging content, but not in ways that lead to divides between players and greater drama.

What do you propose then? It’s almost impossible to have challenging content and not divide the player. Because there are ALWAYS people who will cry, “too hard!”. Take the Living Story Shadow Dragon boss for instance…it’s not even a raid, and people were crying “too hard” – were in fact all you had to do was take a few minutes to observe it’s mechanics, and the fight turns cake.

Are you saying that everything should be easy because the heavy non-skilled chunk of the playerbase would complain about it? (Note that I did not say casual, because even casuals can be skillful, I know a few myself).

Also reward HAS to be tied in with gameplay…look at how many people avoid fluffs like Jumping Puzzle…

This won’t work. As someone else said:

“The skill floor of most gw2 PvE players is so low I would find open world pvp would be meaningless.”

It’d be a massacre lol

Opt-In Dueling? Yes.

…Now, if they can pull off raids in such a way that the numbers are flexible, the rewards are no better than any other content in the game and they are still extremely challenging, then Im all for them…

But then no one would do them…We already know our player base is more prone to doing easy things for high rewards. Let this, for a change, be a hard thing for higher reward…

EDIT: Maybe raids can have NORMAL mode and HARD mode, with better more exclusive rewards locked in HARD CORE mode. That way, the not so skillful players can still stroll through the normal mode, and those seeking challenge can do the hard mode and get rewarded appropriately. Everyone wins.

The stuff in italics is exactly why I’m against raiding. First raiders want harder content. Then they want better rewards. Then they want even better rewards to sweeten the pot because otherwise there’s no way to get ten players to sign onto a 3 hour commitment on a weekly basis. Before you know it you have two categories of players: the ones in raid gear who do double the DPS of everyone else despite running the same rotations in the same way and the non-raiders who are looked down upon because they aren’t committed enough to have as good of gear. Thanks, but no thanks.

Do you even play GW2? There is absolutely no gear trend mill in this game. Since when did I ever state I want to be more powerful than you? That doesn’t show that I’m a better/skillful player. ANet even said in HoT announcement that there will be no gear grind involved. This is GW2 aka horizontal progression aka Skin Wars 2. Give me an exclusive skin or item that let’s others know of my feat.

Also of course we want better rewards, if we are willing to put in the time, commitment, and organize this, why shouldn’t we? Rewards attained from mindless zerging should not be equal to organized skillful play.

Have you ever heard of the concept of a guild? Maybe try gathering or joining a group of like-minded people, filling up dungeon parties has never been an issue.

World of Warcraft is calling to you. There are plenty of raids to be found there. I prefer that development resources in this game remain focused on content for everyone, not just on content for “a few skillful players.” There are plenty of other games out there that target that crowd. How selfish are you? Why do you want to turn the one casual game in the market into the same old raiding game that everyone else is doing? If you want raiding, please play one of the many others that provide it.

First of all. What? Re-read what you just wrote. Just re-read it.

Why in the world would I go to WoW? I never played it, I never will. I absolutely hate gear grinding. Let me state it in bold so you don’t get confused again.

There is NO power creep in GW2 in terms of gear grinding

I never said I want to turn a casual game into raiding. Have you even read my previous post? There are plenty of open world event maps that are coming out, and you can’t even allow a few of us to enjoy fun, challenging content?

FYI – I also like the open world pve events. But raids are a different need.

Also this game is play how you want. Nothing is mandatory. You’re not forced to raid to advance in terms of power level.

Let me help you out. The only legitimate rebuttal that you have is that it “takes up resources that could have been used elsewhere”. Fine, okay. I can also say that I don’t like all the jumping puzzle (hypothetical, I actually enjoy JP) that they put in the game, since only a handful of people do them. So why waste resource on making more of them? See what I did there? None of us have concrete facts or numbers to dictate whether the allocation of such resources is a waste of time or not.

And no, I won’t play another game, because I absolutely love the GW franchise. So I will ignore all the imaginary callings, thank you.

Wow so many vocal “No” here. First off, open world does not count as raids…

I personally would like a 10-man or a 5-man CHALLENGING raid-like content (but no, “if you forget to press one button, you lose” mechanic). Everything is wayyy to casual as it is…which is the core of the game, and I’m fine with that because I can be relaxed when I PvE, I have sPvP to satisfy my PvP competitiveness…partially.

That being said, the skillful players deserve something. There is nothing in the game that shows you are better player than others, except maybe Liadri and Tribulation Mode SAB weapons.

All that AP, Zerker Ascended Gear, etc. etc. Shows nothing about your quality as a player. Zero. Nada. It’s just time spent on the game.

Do you know how popular the Triple Trouble boss is? It’s not. Know why? Because it requires much more tactics and organization than five man groups. This game’s audience just doesn’t demand that level of play.

It’s not that massively popular because it requires a HUGE group, with a few coordinated leadership. However in this context, 10-man is NOT a huge group. We are not asking for typical massive group raids. We are asking for a small organized raids.

Basically, my abilities are not being tested, my mind can go on zombie mode and clear content as it stands. Raids may or may not solve that. It’s not everyone cup of tea, but with SO MANY OPEN WORLD EVENT MAPS coming up, it baffles me how you can even complain about what a few skillful players would like to see in the game. Seriously, how selfish are you?

EDIT: Maybe raids can have NORMAL mode and HARD mode, with better more exclusive rewards locked in HARD mode. That way, the not so skillful players can still stroll through the normal mode, and those seeking challenge can do the hard mode and get rewarded appropriately. Everyone wins.

Hello friends & curious on-lookers,

Shadows of Ravenloft [SOR] is re-opened for recruitment! So grab a drink, relax and spare us 5 minute of your time.

I’m going start off with the kicker here, then go down into more of the F.A.Q.

The big question, why should I join SOR?

In SOR, you are not another number. In my personal humble opinion, I do not believe in massive guilds. Find a large guild (400~ members) and ask them if they know EVERY member in their guild. Chances are, they don’t…and that’s fine! They have other objectives as a guild and likewise, SOR has their own agenda.

We want you to feel like you are at home. You are not another number, you are a friend. You matter. There is always a helping hand available in SOR to guide you through the game if you are new / returning or old! Know that your questions are not a hassle! We are here to help you. Most veteran members and officers have been playing since BETA Weekend, so we have 3+ years of experience and knowledge in the know-hows of Tyria and who knows maybe you have something that we can learn from as well!

Sidenote: We are also looking for players who are interested in high level fractals & raids. If you’re already skilled at your profession, that’s awesome! If you’re not that great, we can teach you the mechanics. Ask and receive, we cannot help you if you do not ask questions! Smooth, clean runs make everyone happy

Now that we have that out of the way,

Who are we?

SOR is a guild founded in Guild Wars (EST. 2005) and like many others has transitioned into GW2! We are primarily a PvE guild, but have a few sPvP enthusiasts among ourselves.

Where do we reside?

SOR was established in Jade Quarry (server), but has members across servers as well. As we are not heavily WvW focused, your server does not matter!

What time do you usually play?
- Weekdays: Mostly evening & night CST/EST after-work (we do have some people randomly logging in early morning or in the afternoon though)
- Weekends: Anytime!

How many active players do you have? What is your total number of members?

As we speak, we are currently sitting around 120 members, but truthfully, I can say that we have around 20-30 members login during week nights.

What kind of activities do you do?

Everything a guild does for fun! We chat, we provide help with whatever content you are stuck on, and in general we just try to have a good time. Basically we do,
• Open World PvE Events (Silverwastes, World Bosses)
• Organized Guild Missions (Every Friday at 10PM EST)
• Organized Dungeon Runs (Every Saturday at 10PM EST)
• Guild Lucky Raffle Draws (happens during guild missions)
• Impromptu & sometimes daily, dungeon & fractal runs (we have quite a lot of people with 70+ AR), and organized guild sPvP.
• Organized Raids in the near future!

What is your rep requirement?

We don’t have a 100% rep requirement in SOR. However, if you could at least drop by and get to know us, that would be lovely. Why else would you want to join a guild if you won’t interact with its members? :p If you do want to be a full-fledged member going forward though, we’d like at least 60% rep time

So you said you don’t want a large guild! How many are you recruiting?

Like I said before, I want SOR to be a group of friends that we know and care for. The ideal number of new recruits would be around 15-20 active members. So that we can actually get to know you, spend time with you and not just group you in the “New Recruits” category.

Do you have mandatory…anything?

Nope. At the end of the day, this a game, and we are all here to have a good time.

A good sense of humour is also bonus.

If you are interested, you can send an in-game email, or whisper any one of us for an invite!

Unfortunately, there was an interview with Colin, where he stated that there were not going to be any new weapons, and it is just the artists going nuts.

IMHO, Colin should have stopped them. As a Game Director, he already knew that having polearms in the trailer will hype people up, and why he chose to go with it regardless, I have no idea.

Feeding false information only agitates the player base.

Don’t do it. Ever Again.
