D/D “cough” has more in combat stealth uptime than D/P “cough”, D/P has not more “sustain” than D/D if you use the same gear with both weapon sets, D/P has more CONTROL atleast if it comes to small scale fights.

People hate getting con"troll"ed and that`s the fun with D/P “cough”, this still needs better planning and execution “cough” than the" 5 buttons in one gaming mose macro button" on the D/D oneshot build.

WvW_Thieves_Stake while under stealth

If they remove the ability to stake when stealth are they also supposed to remove the ability to blackpowder > stake, or stake > shadowstep > shadowreturn > finish stake? I don’t think this should be removed and it’s not really and issue unless you didn’t see a thief go stealth to begin with. If someone is down and you see a thief go stealth you know where he is going to be, just use knock backs/fear/cc/or aoe him. Not that hard to counter stealth stomping as long as you know its happening.

Do know what’s happening when you are blindfolded?

Stealth stomping isn’t as powerful as blind stomping. If you know a thief went stealth then you know he’s there and can predict what he’s going to do and where he’s going to be. In an 1v1 situation if you’re down and the thief isn’t he already won the fight anyways right?

Mesmers win from downed state a lot 1v1, phatntasmal rogue can hit insanely hard…

Warriors can win from downed state if not blinded or stealth stomped…

Without blinds or stealth or teleports a thief will never stomp a decent player fast especially not in group fights.

All traps should have a destroy trap effect like shadow trap has now obvoiusly a different one on each trap that gives the thief a short term advantage boons condition removal come to mind.

Traps should be unblockable and should all have an AoE effect (with the exception of shadow trap).

The size needs to be increased to level of ranger traps.

The cast time needs to be drastically reduced.

This might make me use them.

The real problem however is there is no place on the utility bar for them because of the “must have utilities”. You got to have atleast 1 stunbreaker and shadow refuge,. You do need Signet of shadows if you do not have movement speed increasing runes, if you have those blinding powder or another stun breaker are the best choice anyway and caltrops beat the traps damage and utility wise without being pre-cast.

I suggest a rework: Remove the passive part, increase the active heal slightly, if the active is triggered it increases all incoming healing for x% for half of the recharge and grants regeneration for half of the recharge time, the incomming healing increase should boost the regeneration ticks to about 75% of the current passive on a build without healing power.
The regeneration effect should not be the boon but an effect like on the thief skill hide in the shadows.
This will still offer very good sustained healing and also make cross class healing that the warrior receives more efficient at critical points.

1st Self-Priority because this offers the most control over your own skills, getting the control over your own skills taken away by mere accident is not good.

If there is no field created by the player:

2nd Time-Priority the 1st combo is the 1st to trigger the latest the last to trigger.

Both serve to reduce the randomness in the game and reward actual planning and situational awareness.

On a side note nothing is more annoying than getting your game messed up the people who are supposed to be on your side, getting your waterfieds clustered up with light fields by the friendly neighbourhood guardians can kill.

My bet is: Crit damage will be reduced and crit chance will be increased (base crit damage will probably be set to 33% or 25% even overall precicion will be increased).

This way the overall crit damage will be the same but the one buttom wonders will be removed, this will not affect pve in any way but will create more consistend damage in pvp wvw it also will make on crit effects more reliable.

Cheat? Or is it a real build?

A lot of weird stuff happening this week… It might be explaind with lag package loss etc.
games like this have insanely comlicated timeing if something is amiss there weird stuff will happen. I noticed some strange changes to movment and "cast"speed on some people this week includeing myself one time I was under the effect of some kind off permanent haste (also haste is not available in my build) and everything happened 2x as fast as usual.
I met a ranger who used rapid fire 3x in a row, my log was filled with like 20 hits while I spammed sb evades which did nothing to avoid damage. Probably a serious time stamp problem due to server lag.
There are some players whenever I hit them my game crashes, it might be the lag…

But it also could be a cheat.

So I was sitting in my comfortable armchair next to the chimmney fire in my nice house, they call it Stonemist Castle, when this horde of uncivilised barbarians stormed in and started killing my servants. Since they did not seem to respond to my polite request to GTFO I moved up to the 2nd floor to find a quiet spot to contemplate my misfortune. But the barbarians objected to that quiet retreat and sent some of their most gruesome killers after me, all carrying oversized swords and hammers and other dangerous tools of murder, so as any sane person would do I accepted their request to play hide and seek, babarians seem to love those kindergarden games and the fun went on for about 5min it ended when another horde of barbarians invaded my home and not only killed the servants but my new “friends” aswell. For some undisclosed cultural reason these barbarians like the ones that came first invited me to another game of hide and seek, which ended rather abruptly when the first horde returned to invade again…

All I see in the OP are S/x buffs and crit trait line buffs, accompanied with Trickery nerfs you are just asking forbuffs to your favorite build in a very “subtle” manner…

Here is ma answer:

Damage of sword 1 reduced to the lvl of dagger 1, dagger 1 damage increaded to the lvl of sword 1.
Single target targeted attacks should deal more damage then AoE cleaves, period, stop the cleave spam, we are not warriors.

Dancing Dagger damage increased to the lvl of September 2012, same with Cluster Bomb.

SB range reverted to the state of September 2012.

Backstab positional bonus damage halfed.

Venom Share if you share a venom you also share all your defensive boons.

Base initiative increased to 15, removal of all initiatve increasing or regaining traits, replaceing them by health regaining and increasing traits.

General balance: Bonus stats on all stack effects like might bloodlust etc. reduced by about 50%, base damage of all skills increased by 33%. This includes condition damage!

This was against my Warrior with 30025 HPs and 2012 Toughness. No other class in the game hits me that hard…and I can see them.

I reflected a 14k killshot yesterday, dead warriors always lift my spirit…

And 7k backstab is low damage anyway.

Engineers are smart. They should be able to build mobile stealth detector traps. Make it an elite skill.

Thieves are even smarter they take stuff others have made… Call it “what was yours is now mine” use the thief’s elite to copy any other player’s elite…

And you have steath detector turrets of a kind since they point towards the thief even if in stealth.

Trickery makes the kitten Fizzle, the whole crit trait line sucks. The simple reason is that trickery lets you do more utility stuff more often and opens up new options for skill combinations which you also can use more often. This leeds to more creative gameplay potential which will allow you to do more “amazing stunts”more often.
The CS traitline is basically one big passive damage increase that adds nothing new to your gameplay.
Both obviously appeal to a different kind of player mindset…

I am usually not prone to insulting strangers on the internet. But… Are you completely stupid steal is freaking great as it is.

When I read that axe whirl is the only decent steal I want to come and hit you, WITH A BLUNT SPOON.

All the stolen items are good, some are borderline overpowered especially if you trait steal and go trickery.

In addition you can get lots of valuable items form critters and mobs.

This thread is so depressing.

Thieves in a nutshell/general advice for new thieves (wvw)

Hello fellow thieves,

since it is that time of year I am going to share my insights into the thief class,make of it what you will.

So here it is thieves in a nutshell (WvW):

There are things about this class that make it wastely more fun than any other the most important of those is the ability to use any combination of your attacks in any sequence as needed due to the unique initiative mechanic.
This leads to very creative gameplay if you so chose and the ability to adapt to a vast range of different situations on the fly. Ifit is needed you can repeat the same skill or combine different skills no other class has that choice.

Going on from there the most creative strategy is to build for that ability to adapt, so ignore the one trick pony specs and go for diversity.

Unfortunately in that regard your choices in weapons will be limited very much.

So weapons:

You will end up with d/p and sb if you compare the weapon sets. The reasons are rather simple, those weapons provide the most diverse options.
They got the greates number of different fishers and combo fileds the class can offer.
And provide the most control.
d/p 4 is the only repeatable ranged “hard cc”in the game, the blind field and d/p 3 also provide unparalelled control from range before engaging in melee, aditionally stealth becomes available for bs and escape and condition removal. Also group stealth can be applied via the blind field realiably.
The bild field is also ideal to "protect stomps " sice interrupts will miss you if you stomp in a blind field.

sb provides the best defensive movement with again control via aoe weakness and cripple. It also provides spammable blast finishers if needed.

Traits:

Now with traits you need to think diversity and control again which leads to traiting steal. Again this limits you choices somewhat. The things you really need are condition removal on stealth and daze on steal (which also reduces steal recharge).
The reasons for both are as I said control you need to control the enemies conditions and be able stop them from useing their most powerful abilities. Sleight of Hand/Steal is the only absolutely unavoidable ranged interupt, you can use it even while disabled to make it even better you will want to also trait Bountyful Theft this trait steals stability 1st due to the boon steal priority so you can even interrupt targets who have stability.
Steal will also become a low cd emergency escape this way.

Try to make your build starting with this and then consequently go for control. Try Long Reach and Hidden Thief or blind on stealth with it to strengthen this even more. But there are lots of different options. EVEN s/x if you want to not us sb for more boon removal and daze.

Skip the crit trait line go for utility and control in wvw you can get enough crit from the gear. You can even skip the power trait line if you want the damage will still be enough due to food stacks and group boons.

Utilities:

Use roll for initiatve as main stun/imobilize breaker it beats shadowstep by far it also grants initiative, if you use sb 3 after it you can disengage while spaming evade (yes thanks to roll for ini you will have the ini to do that).

Switch you other utilities often to be less predictable and adapt to the situations, think about your combo options (cross class combos, especially aoe combos, will always win out in the end, the game is designed that way, remember blinding powder is another blast finisher).

Elite:

Use daggerstorm everything else is not even half as good, remember you can cancel the skill anytime by useing dodge but you will still get the full 8sec stability. It also reflects projectiles (once you have reflected a rifle warriors burst or a p/d condi unload or a imobilize rangers burst you will understand why this is awesome). If you use lyssa runes you will get the 6 point benefit even if you cancel daggerstorm.

Gear:

Mix your gear this is easy in wvw start with pvt armor zerker weapons and mixed jewellery, then modify to your preferences.
When you start out pvt is verry good since you will meet players in ascended gear you will need the vitality and armor, trust me, this will make your life a lot easier.

In my tests the damage from mighton venom and the extra power for the 30 points exceeded the damage from 15 trickery 10% if ini is over 6.

Especially in the mists, it might be different if you max out power in wvw and the multiplier might exceed the increase in the base.

I still do not see how it ispossible for bs to harder than roughly 12-13k and also not cnd to hit much harder than 4.5k.

14k does seem abnormally high for a WvW Thief build, even if he was a glass cannon.

I don’t think Might stacks are really a factor here as every Might stacking build sacrifices DPS in other areas.

Even a 25/30/0/0/15 build, which is pretty rare in WvW would have a hard time hitting those numbers.

It might be possible with a Scholar Runes, full Bloodlust stacks, full Guard stacks a few Might stacks and a few stacks of Vulnerability. But it seems a bit of a stretch.

If you add Assassins Singet_ into that mix then yeah, 14k might well be possible.

I hit a 6k mug in wvw with full signets, ruby orbs. no bloodlust/gaurd stacks so i’m gona go ahead and say its very much possible XD

Thanks for the screenshot, I find that one interesting, especially the combat log.

You hit for 1.6 k with steal do a cnd bs combo 4,someting k 6,something k and then hit with steal again for over 6k.

Your damage seems quite normal except for one the abnormally high mug/steal. Especially since mug can not crit.

I smell a bug I dub it “accidental double damage” would not be the 1st mmo with this kind of bug.

I used a mix of zerker and val gear, build was 30/30/0/0/10

I went all out max damage…

As I said even with 22 stacks of might guard leech food buff and sharpening stone I did not get those numbers consistently.

Only with the weird haste stuff happening I was able to go beyond 10k bs, but some time my damage just skyrocketed for no reason I could see usually with haste up, 3k 3k 3k skill1 attack chain etc. (really weirs stuff).

Honestly I do not recommend those kind of builds, they are totally one dimensional and usually do not work, you basically pop everything and hop in if you get lucky your opponent gets lag and you down him in like 3-4 sec or faster, but then you are in deep kitten even stomping becomes a problem.

Mind I used ascended weapon…

In the mist on the heavy golem I never got past 11k bs, never past 4.2k cnd, I do not see 7k+ cnd happening, something seems a bit fishy here.

I keep editing:

4 signets used includeing assassins signet bsilisk venom used, 22 stacks etc.

hi again,

so I have been testing a bit, 4 signets might etc. under normal circumstances I do not see that kind of damage happening.

However if I use Critical Haste for some reason sometimes in wvw this proc also increasesthe damage not just the speed of attacks, I had hits almost 2x as hard as usual when this happens.

This might be a bug, would be awesome if you guys could post some feedback if you had that happen aswell.

I got hit by a 12.something k backstab today initiated by 2,9k mug and 7k cnd, I got 2.6k toughness. The other thief did not have might nor did she have bloodlust stacks.

I do not think this is possible under normal circumstances, go figure…

HS will never hit for 7k,not even if you have 0 armor and are below the 30% hp treshold, I smell BS in your post.

If it would you`d be dead after 3 hits (plus the auto attacks) that could hardly be called “spam”, I smell more BS.

On a side note: I have been called HS spammer while useing a short bow. Usually people do not even have a clue what kills them.

I think it should penetrate stability, just sucks when someone pops 100 years of stability when I’m going in for a spike. Blind is acceptable.

Oh! And this would put some pressure on classes with high stability uptime by forcing them into using stunbreakers.

Bountyful Theft proritizes stability and removes it before the venom gets applied.

Apparently none of you have played S/D in competitive PvP and combined BV with LS to stop that guardian Shelter and secure the point.

Steal + mace crack does it better and more often, steal with sleight of hand does it on 1 button….

Healing signet and adrenallin heals alone will completely outheal short bow damage. You will never get a warrior with a decent build to 60% useing a shortbow.
Not even in a million years,you can not slowly wear down warriors, their passive heals alone will screw you.

AR was a good master trait, it made me win out in a lot of tight situations, it is not worth 30 points into acrobatics however since you would lose the really imortant stuff in other trait lines.

HtC is a joke, no debatte there needed.

I guess the devs do not like builds that have 20 points in 2 trait lines and 30 in 1 trait line. Just like the balanced build s that spent points in 4 trait lines or even 5 those builds will bit by bit get removed.

As a start get PVT armor from wvw for badges, buy damage jewellery of the TP berzerker and Assassin, get the PVT back slot item form the temple of Grenth in orr (42k karma).
zerker or valkyrie weapons.

You will need the PVT gear for wvw you will face players with full ascended sets soon, trust me YOU WILL NEED the vitality and touhgness.

SB 4 does not break stealth, neither do caltrops, go figure.

With SB you are next to unkillable in pve, most champions in the game can actually be solo`d useing a SB, it just takes a while.

For leveling bleed builds are really good d/d and SB. d/d has the big advantage of haveing 3 different finishers.

Below 80 your stats do not really matter, get the karma PVT wvw gear (rare) every 10 levels and you are set. Chose the traitlines below 80 for the uitility you like to have, increased range on steal, endurance refund on dodge etc.

If you want to use SB a lot at 80 continue to build for utility, SB is a utility weapon, play to your strengths not your weaknesses.

Quite frankly, my death rate has gone up about nearly 500% without sword ‘2’. Everytime I get caught by a CC, I eat about 3 seconds worth of zerg damage, and no, hard to catch is garbage. If you wanted to nerf the kitten sword move, how about separating WVW and SPVP changes?

I don’t expect any dev response, obviously.

Put roll for initiative on your utility bar,perhaps? Or maybe shadowstep, or use withdraw, or steal?

If your death rate goes up 500% by loseing 1 specific mechanic, then the problem is probably you being carried by an overpowered skill and your whole post actually becomes a pretty good argument as to why the nerf was needed.

This is remarkable. Can the non-thieves stop posting here? Steal doesn’t break CC, you would have known that if you played a thief.

I already have shadowstep traited and it has a 50 seconds cooldown, doesn’t give me stability and people seem to forget that S/D is merely the rough equivalent of a warrior popping the berserker stance. It takes 5 initiative for to have a “stun break”, and spamming it is our single defence against any form of CC because we DON’T HAVE STABILITY.

People keep saying nerf the kitten skill but what the puppy, we don’t have A kittenING STABILITY SKILL, HELLO?

The devs are taking away vigor, our stun breaks, gives us rubbish things like Hard to catch which sometimes send straight into the kitteng zerg and kills me straight away. Devs refuse to respond and mods delete away posts for reasons of being rude. I don’t have anything else to say other than the word Unfair.

I advise you to read the description of “steal” on the wiki, it can be use while “disabled”, I will remind you when I walk past your corpse next time and wave.

If you do not believe me go to the heart of the mists, go to the warrior npc let them use his knockdown and steal…

In your zerg situation “Mr. I do not use a shortbow in large group battles and die while charging a 90 blob in a tunnel with 20 players thief commander” you steal to the back of the enemy zerg and hope your team makes it through aswell.

I started testing this build and it works pretty good, the only 2 times I died in 5 matches random join with 4 wins was when outnumberd 3v1 and the lost game was 5v4 against us.

I suggest mug instead of sundering strikes and thrill of the crime instead of throw feathers (you might want to try 10 acrobatics with reuced fall damage and blinding powered on fall damage instead of 10 trickery.

I used HiS instead ofthe new venom, roll for initiative skale venom, ice drake venom and basilisk venom. Offset was short bow.

Runes of speed, sigil of force and sigil of leeching, sigil of leeching again on the bow.

The lifedrain adds up nicely, defence is decent, mobility rather bad.

The key seems to be to pool initiative and time the venoms clever.

I rather enjoyed this build and it is a nice break from my usual condition build.

Thanks again for posting OP this is a nice idea, I will try this out and tweak it a bit.

Go to try 20 0 30 20 0 with ambush trap and thief guild before speaking!

Gets hardcountered by daggerstorm you will kill yourself….

Come with your bad skill daggerstorm to counter me! A skill that all know how evade! Super lool

You do understand that daggerstorm reflects projectiles and that your thieves npcs can not dodge do you?

Quite frankly, my death rate has gone up about nearly 500% without sword ‘2’. Everytime I get caught by a CC, I eat about 3 seconds worth of zerg damage, and no, hard to catch is garbage. If you wanted to nerf the kitten sword move, how about separating WVW and SPVP changes?

I don’t expect any dev response, obviously.

Put roll for initiative on your utility bar,perhaps? Or maybe shadowstep, or use withdraw, or steal?

If your death rate goes up 500% by loseing 1 specific mechanic, then the problem is probably you being carried by an overpowered skill and your whole post actually becomes a pretty good argument as to why the nerf was needed.

Currently Devourer Venom is better.

+1 for that comment. i totally agree.

would you guys rather have:

SKILL A
0 cast time
2 strikes
2.25 seconds immobilize
30 seconds of up time
45 second cooldown

SKILL B
1 second cast time
1 strike
1.5 second stun
30 seconds uptime
45 second cooldown

now dont forget that immob is basically a stun if u strike them from behind

I`d take the option to move an utility of my choice to the “elite” slot as a thief anyday, as it stands daggerstorm is the only good elite we have and it does not work under water. Basically the only use for basilisk venom is to trigger the lyssa runes every 30 sec.

When i fight against thief i keep my eyes closed and push some buttons.

That explains a lot…

Actually, I think the better solution is that stability should clear and prevent immobilize. Also, stun breakers should be able to break any immobilize/root in the game.

I disagree stability should not be a total get out of jail for free card, it is very powerful as it is now anyway. There are specific skills in the game to remove imobilized and cure conditions. There is no need whatsover to give the classes with a lotof stability yet another advatage, no freaking need for yet another buff for warriors and guardians, period.
