Basically, RUN!

From a spvp point of view avoid 1v1 against thieves like hell, even as a thief I disengage as fast as possible, as a mesmer you would have to specifically build just to deal with s/d and even then you will have an uphill fight.
Team up with some one at the start of the game and stick with that guy, focus on the group fights and 2v1 thieves.
Mesmers are there for interrupts and boon control in group fights let the solo stuff be done by thieves and warriors.

Finally after the ready up I know who to deal with warriors.

You got to outlast their defenses while doing enough damage to make them use those in the first place and then you got to kill them with conditions their weak spot, thanks balance guys finally I understand.

How that is to be done by any profession than another warrior escapes me still, could you please share that particular insight on the next ready up?

Considering the fact you have mug trait on, You will get revealed when Stealing, and then “trying” to gain insta stealth (Hidden Thief). Mug deals damage. You will get revealed on steal.

This is wrong, mug is an exception, it was patched sometime last year…

Mug does nor reveal you if you use hidded thief, mug has this one unique exception to the reveal rule that it does not break hidden thief, it will reveal you if you use it with any other way of getting stealth, though.

The reason why d/d is sub par in spvp is the fact that the sword has a AoE cleave due to that it is way easier to hit with the auto chain in addition the sword does more damage especially if you factor in that it hits multiple targets in the cleave cone, but even the single target damage with the sword is better since it is easier to hit with it (quite often you can just walk away from dagger attacks).

This is only one example of where this game is messed up balance wise AoE attacks are outdamaging single target attacks this should never be the case… (insert AoE spam rant here).

D/D was originally meant to be a hybrid set, this is the reason why we have deathblossom and a 100% 4 target projectile finisher on it. However people didi not get that and started making one shot builds (which led to lots of complaints), so the balance team im a act of infinite wisdom decided to nerf all the weapon skills that do not actually contribute to those one shot builds (deathblossom, dancing dagger and cnd), by doing so they almost ruined the set effectively removing D/D from the balance equation.

To bring the set back the nerfs to dancing dagger and deathblossom need to be reverted, the special rule for cnd in spvp needs to go, period, it never should have been there in the first place the problem was always to high crit multipliers (for all proffessions) and not the base damage.

To make the set good, the evade on deathblossom would have to cover the whole duration, why that is not so is another of those wise balance decisions, D/D is the only thief weapon set without a disengage mechanic (and we all know what happens to thieves in a prolonged toe to toe fight) it needs the evade much more than any other weapon set.

All of this will never happen, though. Actually none of this will happen. The balance team is streamlining the game for a “meta game” and if you want to know what that is look at warriors and guardians.

Solo Q, predicting the outcome

So here is my method for predicting the outcome of Solo Queue matches, it is works.

Add +3 for every warrior on a team,
add +3 for every guardian on a team,
more than 2 warriors add +0 for everyone after the 2nd,
more than 2 guardians add -1 for everyone after the 2nd,
add +1 for every thief or engi, -2 for every thief after the 1st one and -1 for every eng after the 2nd one,
add 0 for every mesmer, necro and ele, -1 for everyone after the 1st one,
add -2 for every ranger.

Do this for both teams, the team with the higher score will win approx. 3 out of 4 games.

Performance Issues

Over the last few days I have had extrem performance issues in spvp (the lobby aswell as the atual game maps).

FPS are dropping for no apparent reasons even when there is “no action”, changes to the game settings have no influence on this whatsoever.

I also get the known “wvw-issues” such as skills not happening etc.

My latency to the server seems stable and at a decent level, but I get extreme delay on interactions with other players.

Anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas what to do about it?

Things I see differently:

The main damage source with staff is burning, even ifyou do not have additional condition damage. Staff clones do a lot of damage due to burning applied by winds of chaos. Staff clones are very dangerous and totally under apprechiated.

CD is good because reduced cd on phase retreat helps a lot, it works as a leap finisher and you do want as many of those as you can get, in group fights produceing more combo effects is what makes you win eventually.

1st step: Block and report.

2nd Step: The number 1 thing that needs to be implemented to spvp is that you will be never ever put into the same team with people on your block list.
This would make sure you will not be forced to play with people you do not want to play with, it also would move players of the same social attitude onto the same teams in the long run, good for everyone involved as everyone will get the atmosphere they prefer on their team.

Think about offensive uses for shadow refuge (dark field) and consider AoE weakness from blasting your poison fields as a form of “soft cc”.

Browsing through this makes me sick, the notion of balance people on this forum have is just disgustingly off the actual in game reality where warriors and guardians run the show everywhere.

Complaining about backstab damage is as pathetic as it gets, other classes do the same damage AoE on 5 players without targeting anyone and get finishers on that aswell.

I will tell you something this once, you qq to much and play not enough you will still lose even if all your suggestions are implemented because you fail to see where the actual problem you have is.

You need to use pistol whip defensively aswell as offensively, pistol wip has a very long passive evade you can not be hit while it is active. You also can use teleports while pistol whip is active without it getting cancled (this includes steal and infiltrator signet). Use head shot more, try to interrupt the heartseeker.

D/P is by far the best weapon combo for thieves (well after short bow that is), the only reason it is not used in spvp is that it can not stay on point but in any movement based fight it is by far superior.

Good playing is not a series of tricks, it is not about he does that you do that to counter and so on, it is about methodically closing of the most likely kind of attack and about positioning.
Be conservative with your initiative pool it then hit,use steal more, get stuff from the critters in wvw and use that.

(edit) Your build is not defensive at all, you are glass and glas breaks fast. 2 sec without evading will kill you against anyone with half a clue, any condition build of any proffession will shred you. You have a lot of orange gear, with that kind of equipment you will lose to players with full ascended gear if you try to beat them in a damage race, the stat difference is tremendous.

The only thing “toxic” here are QQers, specifically elementelist QQers, glass eles can do the same numbers but they can do it to 5 players at once, they can cover the whole point with their AoE.

One one-shot player complaining over another makes me sick.

I honestly despise the attitude of people in spvp, though the game mode is entertaining the people there are not, their gimmick is always ok and the other guys gimmick is always OP.
Once their gimmick fails people procced to insult people in /w and once they are blocked they procced to complain on the forum.

Lost exactly 25% bonus crit damage. Tested a lot and died a lot last night (4 or 5 times haha, I raged a lot…).

The changes seem to benefit warriors and dps guardian a lot.

My findings in short, ditch power get precision. Get the new +7% crit chance sigil on your melee set and sigil of perception on your 2nd bow slot.

Get precision.

Necro damage is sick now, be careful!

0/6/6/2/0 is absolutely not ok. In fact no power spec is ok atm, sadly.

Ditch power, get percision. Trust me on that, try it, pecision beats power for thieves, it always has.

I am to lazy to explain why in detail, but if you got problems with doing not enough damage try it…

The point I was trying tomake earlier is that the hybrid concept for thieves was aimed at a “different” game. It was aimed at lower overall stat budget, it was aimed at trinkets with jewel slots which allow you to fine tune the stat distribution. Also when the game came out it was by far easier to apply bleeds which were also much stronger, on crit effects also had no internal cooldown.

Ascened gear and the way it was introduced step by step led to a “stack more of the same” mentality, also for a long time there was a very harsh suppremacy ofdamage vs defense, since there were ascended weapons and trinkets but no armor.

I really would not call the S/P P/D build discused here a “hybrid” build, it is extremely focused on direct damage.
Even with P/D the main damage comes from cnd and shadow stab.
(edit) This build is what I would call a “balanced” build since it aims at creating multiple options includeing defense instead of stacking everything on one trick.

Joining the meta will put you allways one step behind, while you copy pasteit the guys who invented it will already be busy with moving on. The so called optimal builds usally are optimal only within very narrow settings and usually cave in as soon as any parameters of those settings change. (Try carrion D/D trickery/power in spvp for example you can farm the meta thieves all day long….)

This is exactly what I personally despise when it comes to game mechanics. Basically you preemtively apply an immunity which absorbs a given amount uses of skills against you, no matter what.
Instead of actively dealing with the use of certain skills that target you you passively and preemtively counter them.
Personally I think those mechanics are boring and “dump down the game”, an actively used skill should be countered by another actively used skill.
As it stands there are to many powerful defensive boons with way to much uptime in the game which get applied way to frequently and passively.

There is no condition problem, except for burning conditions do way less damage than direct attacks if you consider the effort it takes to apply those.

Just try to get confusion damage even comparable to say thief sword auto attacks or warrior axe attacks, it just is not viable, de facto all conditions just act as a cover for burning in the current “meta”.

Even torment is next to neglectable, since it is disproportionally hard to get stacks of dangerous size.

So just stop wasting your cleanses, and stop wasting light fields.

Another free hint: Hidden Thief is really good for D/P to get those quick backstabs in, it is kind of redundant (even sometimes counter productive)with D/D where you will steal to CnD.

Each stolen item holds a clue and the key to beating the class you steal it from, figure it out yourself from here.

The stolen skills are far from weak, especially in wvw where you can get stuff from the critters and NPCs on the map. Go figure it from here yourself.

Any thief calling steal weak is clueless, period.

Steal is far from shallow, it is infact the most flexible and divers proffession mechanic just get the right item and your approach to a given fight will change drastically.

My opinion: It will still be very good and Berzerker will still be suicide.

After the 15th you will have to revise mainly your rune and sigil choices, armor and weapon stats will be way less important.

You can easily make up for the crit chance loss on valkyrie armor by useing maintenance oil which will profit from the extra vit.

Also the changes to superior sigil of intelligence will make you able to ditch hidden killer for executioner in my opinion that sigil will be a must have.

Maximizing your damage is not the only aspect (atleast if it comes to wvw), you need to find a spot where you are comfortable with your survivability vs damage, it is very important to figure out for yourself where that spot is.

One very important aspect is that if you do not have full ascended gear you should not concern yourself with maxing damage stats for wvw, since you will face players with ascended gear who will have more stat budget than you, you will not beat them with raw damage, if you are on the “exotic level” of things (even partially) focus on being able to take a beating and movement this will buy you the time to outplay your opponents this is what you have to do anyway since you will be at a raw stat disadvantage.

Even at 0% bonus crit damage, precision beats power and crit damage if it comes to raw damage over a longer period of time. The reason why people do not realise that escapes me.

The only argument for power over precision is that you can create extreme spikes of damage if you get a lucky crit streak, this has led to the current playstyle of “jump in get lucky and win and if you do not get lucky try to reset until you get lucky”.

Against people who know what they are doing that kind of playstyle will fail more often than it will work.

and also because by game design thief is not “the dueler”

You might have forgotten the game description about the lack of PROFESSION roles in favor of profession builds.

That means you are supposed to kill a zerg build, but thief is not supposed to be at advantage agaisnt any other profession with roaming builds….

And if you don t know the importance of roaming you should ask in www section where they will gladly explain you.

Thieves are immortal, they are totally overpowered it is totally impossible to kill one.

Everything about that proffession is OP.

What will happen if those upgrades are by default soulbound to the charakter that aquires those, like superior runes of sanctuary?

Will I be able to move ascended sets between characters with the soulbound upgrades in place indefinately?

Shadow Refuge “pulses” it’s effects, each pulse applies the effects once the “hut” over the are indicates that there are pulses remaining. While there are pulses remaining everyone leaving the are of effect (the big circle indicates that area) will be revealed, so stay inside until the hut disappears. The reaveal effect also happens if you get forcefully moved outside by a knockback or pull.

Any clearer statement ofmy point of view will get me another infraction point, I do hereby respectfully acknowlege that you “do not get it”.

They guy in the vid does not even use a consistent “build”, surely the 300 or something hp he regenerates while stealthed and the condition removal offered by SA are what made him win (especially against the warrior, check the signets on that guy, hint… hint..).

SA was quite obviously what made him win against the S/P thief “challanger of the arena” means top 100 tournament player (hint… hint…).

Your suggestions would make that “build” and playstyle weaker (suposedly more fair)? It does not get any weaker that this, there is no more uphill fighting that what this guy did.
Even if you get all you ask for, this guy would still do this. Can you guess why?

Well, aegis application will happen passive on guardians and can also happen as AoE, this can no way reliably be forseen by anyone it will totally remove control over backstab and all other stealth attacks it will become subject to rng (oh, rng equals skilled counterplay why did I not think of this), personally I would not mind this if aegis was not so easy to come by for guardians and anyone around them, if everyone had to build for aegis like say mesmers…

Evasion on sb 3 is 0.5 sec or so dumping all initiative into it assumeing 15 points trickery and includeing initiative regen gives you approx. 2 sec of immunity by evade, if you then use roll for initiative to recover initiative and dump that again into sb 3 you will get another 3 evades inclueding the roll for initiative sums up to approx. 3.5 sec of immunity by evade with blowing everything includeing a stun breaker.
Compared to all other immunities, blocks and evades in the game this seems a bit “costly” to me also you will severly mess up your positioning by doing that.

Reduce bounces by 1 on sb1 but compensate the damage, awesome from a thief’s perspective please do this, less retaliation damage, awesome. But do not dare to complain once this is in the game.

Couldn’t had said it any better myself. If they mean the ones not even in combat then thats common sense they cant perma stealth while fighting.

A very interesting line of though, I think you are not consequent enough with your build though.

I’d suggest 0/0/10/30/30

zerker amulett

sword new sigil of intelligence, dagger +5% crit chance, sb sigil of purification and new sigil of intelligence

the trickery utility combined with 3 guaranteed crits on every weapon swap will make up for any damage loss by far plus your crits will be protected by stability if you do it right

probably scholar or lyssa runes… (edit) forget that pvp traveller runes of course…

Good start and middle part, you messed up at the end though. How are your 13 stacks of confusion supposed to do damaged to a perma-dazed/stunned target? Be more consistent on the next one please, the goal must be to make it look as if it would work.

The issues at hand have nothing to do with lag, lag implies delayad communication between clients and servers. Nor does this have anything to do with package loss.

The issues at hand are related to what is happening on the servers and the processing of information on the servers.

On a side note: There are obviously ways to provoke those issues.

(edit) the issues arise even on “empty” maps like obsidian sanctum with only interactions by less than 15 players.

Even movement is impossible, I keep getting teleported around, skills unusable dying to one application of burn because no skills equals no cleansing, dying to a rangers pet that follows me over half the map I can not damage it I can not use skills, no skills working no damage getting registered on the other end but I consistently receive damage, (very interesting way of registering player interaction one way only)…

It’s an Entrapment by this class to make their mobilities and bursts more OP than it is. Ride the lightning already output Super Extreme Op burst than it should be. Reversing this lock-down would be a suicide to your vision for class balance.

They are already in The Holy Trinity, why make them more?

Instead, Elementalist are Overly OverPowered and are in serious need to be Nerfed/Balanced more.

You gave them Invincibility (Diamond Skin), what more?

More God Mode Burst; Ride The Lightning?

Other class buffs beside Warrior and you, doesn’t make them Overly Overpowered.

Just randomly throwing this into the discussions here:

I suggest balanced amuletts for spvp, by this I mean amuletts that offer any combination of any four stats in equal distribution.

I suggest this to offer the option to create builds that have more than one trick up their sleves and are still focused enough to fill a role in spvp.

Maybe this would make spvp builds less boring and one dimensional.
