Damage is calculated as Power x [1 + Crit Chance x (Crit Damage – 1)] x constant (which depends on weapon, skill coefficients and enemies armor). To be clear, crit chance is a number between 0 and 1 and crit damage is 1.5 + crit damage from equipment.

Taking partial derivative with respect to your current power, crit chance and crit damage gives you the respective per stat point increase in damage

(1) 1 + Crit Chance x (Crit Damage – 1) for each point in power

(2) Power x (Crit Damage – 1)/2100 for each point in precision

(3) Power x Crit Chance/[(stat point tradeoff) x 100] for each stat point tradeoff for crit damage

The higher the number the better. So if (3) > (1) and (2), then moving some power and precision to crit damage increases DPS (ignoring effects triggered by crit). Your DPS is optimal when (1) = (2) = (3).

Quote #2:
A simple example: suppose you currently have 1800 power and 30% crit chance and +40% crit damage (1.9 crit multiplier) from equipment.

Now suppose you can optimize your gear and either get 15 power, 15 precision or 3% crit damage (1% crit for 5 stat points). Then the values are

(1) 1 + (0.3)(1.9 – 1) = 1.27 for each point in power

(2) 1800 x (1.9 – 1)/2100 = 0.77 for each point precision

(3) 1800 × 0.3/(5 × 100) = 1.08 for each stat point tradeoff.

In this case, you’re better off getting power > crit damage > precision.

However, because of the limited stats combination on equipment, we seldom deal with a case when the tradeoff is as clear cut as the above example. Let’s just say that there is much more math and search to be done to determine the optimal stat allocation.

You need a good balance of Power / Crit Chance / Crit Damage [Cond. Dmg / Cond. Duration] for optimal DPS

I like your build also though. Add some Soldier Runes and you’ve got some nice condition removal. Like you said, go for X instead of V on Tactics. With the right gear you should already be at 50% crit rate (pre-Fury).

I like the concept. Not sure I’d pick Death from Above over Berserker’s Power.
Quick Breathing instead of Lung Capacity is an interesting choice.

yeah happy dieing to veterans and multiple mobs. that guide is crap and if you run into a dungeon with that build you gonna get kicked right away for being a clueless newbie, no offense.

Rubbish. Multiple mobs are easiest with GS because of AoE. Veterans you may have to start paying some attention to his attacks as opose to playing brain-afk.

Obviously you’re not going to be running dungeons with that build but that’s not what OP asked for:

Answer to this is All-Signets + GS and not 15 points in Defense for adrenal health…

For leveling, stick with GS, grab Deep Strikes trait and equip (but don’t use) all signets for a decent crit-chance.

That means you’re improving your condition damage by 7 per tick.

I’d go for crit dmg.

English servers get unfair advantage from NA nightshifts. Germans and French have to fight for themselves while the EU (read english) servers can easily cover all time-zones :/

Don’t worry about using the wrong Trait skills as you can respec any time you want.

You’re going to have unlimited Skillpoints so you can buy all the skills even after you are 80.

Advice on GS/Rifle build

I know this wasn’t asked, but if you’re mixing Zerk and Knight’s the following link is relevant:

Unless it’s the following, it can be optimized:
3 pc Berserker armor – glove / shoulder / boots
3 pc Knight armor – helm / body / legs
4 pc Berserker Jewellery – amulet / earrings / backpack
2 pc Knight Jewellery – rings (with zerk jewel)

Because you’re running shouts, I’d consider going 6/6 Solider’s runes (that’s what I’d do with this build).
Because you’re using the Empowered trait, you could also go for 6/6 Lyssa runes, that would add 18% dmg (2% per boon) every time you use SoR.

As for Sigils, Bloodlust is great but you’ll take a while to hit 25 if you just put it on one of your two 2H Weapons. If you put it on both, you’re missing out on the useful effects of Fire / Force / Blood during the fights.
Another alternative is to have a second set of Rifle / GS which have Bloodlust so you can swap once you’ve hit 25.
Another alternative is to have say Sword/Axe or Axe/Axe with 2x Bloodlust on them, then you only need to kill 13 mobs/players with that weapon-set equipped.

Gearing advice

For WvW you will be needing a ranged weapon. Unless Rifle is your main (implementing Arms VII), you’ll need a Longbow for Siege/Def and it’s useful for zerg-warfare also because you can’t always stay in melee range.

GS and Sword are both excellent weapons for mobility. GS also does some nice melee damage while sword’s offhands (shield/warhorn) bring other useful skills to the table. Using both is alot of mobility which is nice, Sword isn’t really very powerful in WvW though in my experience.

Generally for a WvW DD I would recommend Knight’s (Power/Precision/Toughness) mixed with Berserker’s (Power/Precision/crit. Dmg). The more Berserker’s you go, the more glassy you turn out. Soldier’s (Power/Toughness/Vit) isn’t quite as good imo because you already have high HP and you’re mission out on Precision (crit. Chance).

If you post a build we can critique it, that might be easier

First lvl 80 - need help

What secondary weapon(set) are you planning on using? You’ll want something ranged for dungeons and WvW. Longbow is nice but for WvW you’ll need Stronger Bowstrings to be effective with it.

You need 30 points in tactics to get Healing shouts.

As for stats, if you’re going to be running dungeons and WvW alot, consider some Toughness important also. If you’re concentrating on Condition dmg, obviously that stat is important. I’d chose power over precision for this type of build.

Please state build, preferred weapons, role you want to fill (range/melee/dd/cc/heal/tank/group-support/solo), environment you’ll be playing in (PvE farm/dungeons/PvP/WvW).

The more specific you are, the easier it is to recommend what gear you should consider

Unless the sigil in the weapon is what you want, you can always get that weapon and add another sigil. Or get an empty weapon. It doesnt really matter,

Hello, I dont think it’s possible to consider a Lvl 40 glass cannon. As far as it is, use the traits from the guide I posted:

“You are now Level 40 and can unlock the Master Traits (Cost 1 gold)

When you use the book to unlock the Master Traits, your traits will reset. What you want to do is put 10 Points into Strength, keeping Berserker’s Power and put 20 points into Arms for Deep Strike and Forceful Greatsword which will grant you Might Boons on critical hits.

You then would want to max out the Strength line putting another 10 points picking up Slashing Power for more damage.

After maxing Arms and Strength to 20. You cant the put points into Discipline for crit damage and Heighten Focus."

These traits are purels damage oriented.

As utilities, run with all Signets (Healing Signet, Signet of Might, Signet of Fury, Dolyak Signet, Signet of Rage). If you leave them passive you get a nice addition to your crit-rate. You can also use them actively to boost your DPS/defence/whatever.

Aside from these, try to grab the Shouts/Stances/Banners and experiment with these when you are playing in groups.

Axe vs Sword on Main Hand

I play without sound so the weapon “sounding wimpy” doesn’t really factor in for me

I’m running Sword/Warhorn + Rifle for WvW. I apply damage with the rifle, sword is primarily about the leap. I really like the burst’s immobilize, also the bleeds grant me +10% dmg from the Attack of Opportunity trait.

Greatsword is probably the best weapon to level with in pve. You have high mobility and good AoE Dmg.

Which Utility Skills you learn in what order is less important but I liked the way the traits were distributed during levelup.

If you go for All-Signets as Utilities and the Trait Deep Strikes you’ll get a nice crit-rate for leveling.

Are warriors fun?

I play a glass ranged warrior for WvW, it’s good fun. The class is incredibly versatile and you can spec/gear for anything ranging from melee/ranged/tank/dps/healer/cc.

I personally picked Asura because I figured it’d be better for WvW (not so easy to get seen/tragetted) however I prefer the looks of Human/Large Humans The Manbearpigs & Elfs easily look the worst though (imo).

Didn’t really bother with defence, in PvE you down most things so fast you dont have to worry much about survivability. Just make sure you’re wearing rare gear and you’ll be right as rain

This part is relevant for Master Traits:

When you use the book to unlock the Grandmaster Traits, your traits will reset. Put 30 points into Arms, picking up Deep Strike, Forceful Greatsword, and Rending Strikes.

20 Points to Strength for Berserker’s Power and Slashing Power. You would want to put another 10 points into Strength for more Power, for the Trait you can use Great Fortitude giving you more Health.

You can then put 10 Points into Discipline for Heighten Focus but by then you are already 80 lol. Congratz on hitting 80!

(Go for all Signets as utilities for extra crit dmg)

Defence II (Turtle Defence) is nice if you’re in melee alot. Considering you’re going to be removing those debuffs (criple/chill/stun/immob) alot with your shouts, consider going for I (Embrace the Pain) instead. More Adrenalin to burn

I’d swap Tactics VI for IV (increased LB range). Longbow is a great weapon for WvW, especially during Siege/Def. Damage per Boon (IV) is 2% afaik, so usually that’ll result in 6-8% with 3-4 boons on you. You’ll top that damage if you often manage to direct the LB Burst towards the enemy zerg’s rear.

I’d always try to grab Discipline IV (Inspiring Shouts) with a Shout build (the only option here is to take 10 points from Arms). Considering you only have ONE Stun, the 50% increased Crit Chance can only do so much for you.

Lastly, with regards to your gear, I’d aim to increase my Critchance to at least 50% (pre-Fury). Aside from using Ruby/Coral Jewlery you want to swap out Glove/Shoulder/Boots and then 1H Weapons/Amulet for Berserker’s.

I too would recommend for you to aim for at least 50% crit chance pre-Fury. Once you’ve achieved this, try to stock up on Power & Toughness

As always, it depends on what you want to accomplish (heal/dps/tank/cc/melee or range). If you’re fighting in a zerg with gun, you’ll need Arms VII.

What equipment are you wearing (what stats are on them?). What traits are you using from vitality line?

Sounds good, it’s all about finding the right balance between Survivability and Damage Remember that Jewels in Earring/Backpack/Ring are Exquisite Rubies.

If you’re mixing zerker with knights, use knights for the items lower on the list and zerker for the higher ones. That way you’re getting the maximum amount of toughness while losing the least amount of crit dmg.

5 stat points – upgrade slot of trinkets and backpack
10 stat points- traits (not an equipment, but listed for comparison)
12 stat points – glove, shoulder and boots
12.8 stat points – 1H weapons and amulet
13.33 stat points – Earring
14 stat points – Backpack (rare version from guild armorsmith)
14.22 stat points – 2H weapons
14.4 stat points – Coat
16 stat points – Ring, helm and legging

dafq, exact same build, complete berserkers equip. Only thing that’s different is you have the additional Signet of Might – haven’t hit 20k yet… What am I doing wrong?

What food/runes/sigil are you using?

Can you post your unbuffed stats (Power/Crit chance/ Crit dmg) pls?

Edit: Just noticed you have 25 Stacks of Bloodlust. So expensive fkn sigils but I guess it’s worth it ^^ However that still only accounts for some of those incredible crits O.o

Looking at your build, in both cases you go 25 into Arms for Attack of Opportunity (10% dmg on crit). Perhaps consider switching Arms V (vuln. on crit) for Arms III (50% bleed duration). The more they bleed the higher your dmg.

To fix this, taking things from nr 1 should give more points in some way. Either by a direct points bonus on capture, or more points a tick for an amount of time after capturing.

This sounds like a good mechanic!

Another idea would be a major Debuff you get whenever you’re first or if you have more than a set winning margin over the second team. Another idea would be a debuff that increases over time. Another would be a debuff that increases proportionatly to the distance in points between #1 & #2.

Similarily you could have buff that increases over time/point distance for the third ranked, though whether these buffed 3rd players would be motivated to attack first through this mechanic is questionable.

Whatever the case it would be fun to see some more fluctuation in our Tier 3 also. We get a strong team from Tier 2 which dominates and a team of our level from Tier 4.

No, 3 teams is perfect exactly for the reason you mentioned.

2&3 vs 1 makes the whole thing fair.

Sadly this doesn’t happen in our matchups with 3 attacking 2 (us) instead

1 usually attacks both and doesn’t give a kitty because they’re stronger anyway.

No offence, but then you shouldn’t be thinking about running AC yet

If you do decide to go for your first runs, be sure to let the others know that you’re going for the first time so they can remind you what to look out for. If possible use Voice-over-IP (Vent / TS).

Consider waiting until level 45 or 50 with full rare equipment before giving it a shot. It’ll be more enjoyable for both you and your group

Also I’m running the same 10/30/0/0/30 with full zerker gear & Sword/Warhorn as secondary, however I’d definitely pick Arms III (+50% bleed duration) because “Attack of Opportunity” grants you +10% dmg on bleeding targets.

Greatsword is an excellent weapon well suited to PvE leveling. The guide explains in what order you should distribute Traitpoints. It also recommends which Utilities are worth spending points on. If you run with Signets (passive, not activated) and the trait Deep Strikes you’ll have a decent crit chance.

Looking for advice on lvling at dungeons

I don’t think there’s any point in you going glass-cannon at 35 because the damage-output is going to be negligible when compared to an 80 on berserker gear. Besides, for dungeons I’d definitely say to go for Toughness to increase survivability.

Utility: FGJ + Banner of Choice (Attack, Defence, Heal + AoE Haste)
This way you are more useful to your group.

For AC you need a GS for the burrows (Way 1 / 3). GS best trait is X from Arms. Other than that, I’d recommend having a Longbow (with IV from Tactics) or a Rifle (with VII from Arms) cos it’s easier to keep some distance from the bosses.

If you’re giong into Arms, get to 25 points for that extra 10% dmg on bleed (bosses in Dungeons are constantly bleeding).

Once you have access to the master-traits you can consider moving to a shout-heal build (XII in Tactics) or a banner-heal build (XI in Tactics) (you can get +healing gear from AC badges).

I agree, WvW is only worth it if you’re near the top because if you win at tier 1 you get awesome rewards.

Back to how the boni work, they reset with each new WvW matchup, correct? So towards Friday you’ll score the best loots, craft better (?) and have slightly better stats overall. Then Friday evening it’s back to 0?

As for all the kittylitter in this thread, you do WvW and benefit your server through the points earned. How is that unfair towards you?

I play WvW to have fun killing other players with my guild. Those percentages of stat-boosts don’t positively or negatively impact my game, unless I’m running dungeons in which case I benefit from it.

AoE 5 Dmg Cap and bad hit chances for few ppl

Perhaps raise it to 10 players, I too would appreciate this as it’d make Shout-Healers and Longbow AoE more viable builds for warrior.

However 25 players losing to 50 or 5 not being able to defend against 30 in a tower are hardly reasons why the cap should be removed (imo).

Greatsword is probably the best weapon to level with in pve. You have high mobility and good AoE Dmg.

Which Utility Skills you learn in what order is less important but I liked the way the traits were distributed during levelup.

I often hold aggro when I’m doing the most damage on a given boss (subjectively). Perhaps you need to do alot more damage than the other partymembers to pull aggro? Damage certainly plays a role though.

If you attack first you got alot of aggro from the get-go. As Balsco says, Proximity also seems to matter.

Healing (your party) seems to generate alot of aggro.

Not sure how (de-)buffs factor into all this but I have a feeling that it’s a relatively normal system with many variables making it difficult for one player to hold aggro indefinitely (at some point you’ll be running away to survive, so your dps drops and aggro switches).

For the records, I bet there’s some wily developers reading this and laughing their butts off because the aggro system is in fact random and we’re here theorycrafting about what makes it tick xD

Guide to “Run and Gun” Build for WvW

Hi Taugrim, nice to see you’re still playing GW2 & working on your Warrior builds

I’m running something similar (also 10/30/0/0/30) though going for full zerker gear. Faring well with it in wuvwuv so far but I’ll consider upping my toughness if I start dieing sooner than the rest of my group.

I’m using a Sigil of Earth on the rifle. More Bleeds means a higher likelihood for +10% damage from “Attack of Opportunity” trait. I’ll give the “Major Sigil of Bloodlust” a go for my Sword/Warhorn set

Instead of OMM and “Fear Me” I’ve gone for adrenalin-regeneration for the Utilities (Berserker Stance + Signet of Fury). This allows me to consistently fire a Killshot (from the get-go) every 10s and replace:

- Arms: Furious (adrenalin on crit) -> Rending Strikes (Vulnerability on crit)
[I also considered Last Chance (Quickness @ 25% HP) but once every 90s seems low]

- Discipline: Inspiring Shouts (adrenalin on shout) -> Signet Mastery (20% signet CD)
[Aside from Signet of Rage, which is invaluable to your build also, this trait also buffs Signet of Fury (adrenalin) & Healing Signet]

I’ve also gone for Heightened Focus (crit% for adrenalin) instead of Mobile Strikes. Once my zerker’s set is full (still missing 4 pieces) I’ll consider swapping these out though

One question Taugrim: Your build lacks any stun breaker or did I miss something? I know its possible to minimize situations where you get stunned by just optimizing positional play. But there are definitely situations where I just need Shake it Off.

If I was running Taugrim’s build I’d also choose SIO over OMM or Fear Me. OMM is single target (it’s not like you’re not able to burst down anything that gets between your crosshairs anyway), Fear Me has a long CD.

I use the signet cooldown reduction trait in the discipline line because I run Signet of Might, Fury, and Rage, as well as FGJ and Healing Surge.

I’ll give this a shot. Healing Surge only gives 10/30 Adrenalin. Have you got any other Traits for adrenalin regeneration?
If this negatively impacts my ability to spam Killshot I’ll switch back to what I’m currently running (Berserker Stance + Signet of Fury)

I figure they’re harder to target in pvp and especially zerg situations (big character models are more prominent). Also easier to hide with them in crags or behind rocks ’n stuff ^^

Soldier runes only make sense if you’re running shouts.

I switched from high vit/toughness/healing to glass cannon zerker. It’s alot harder, you have to pay more attention to the monsters and what they’re doing or you risk kissing the ground

I switched for WvW, if I was concentrating on PvE/dungeons I’d definitely go for something with toughness though.

Why do they even limit the amout of players on a map? They should just set it to maximum, this would fix the “players have to queue”-issue.

Also you could constantly show on the map where all the players are so that on the super-map you see where the action is and which areas are uncontested/unprotected.

Also, if you remove the graphics option “Optimize for Performance”, everybody would always see the highest graphical quality! That would look moar amazing for everybody!!1

Refusing to get legendaries/ascended

I dont undestand the point of this thread. You enter PvP and everybody has same level and access to all equipment. You enter WvW and everybody has same level. Getting rare items is easy/cheap, getting exotics is easy and only slightly bettar. Getting legendary is kitty hard and also only slightly bettar, hardly anybody but motivated PvE players will get this.

There’s not going to be any wuvwuv imbalance through players having a legendary weapon. And even if the odd player is slightly stronger with such a weapon, it’s so hard to achieve that it only buffs <1% of players.

Playing Warrior in WvW.

The way the traits are setup, I can either go for:
tank + heal & buff + low damage
tank + cc & utility + low damage
medium armor/life + medium damage (balanced build dps/survivability)
glass + cannon
(These being the extremes you can go for)

Going for KS glass-cannon is by no means easy:
– you need complete Berserker’s equip (takes a while, is not for free
– your utility will all focus on that one skill
– you’re only going to be useful in WvW zerg-situations (1v1, 5v5, siege/def much less so)
– Coupled with this you’ve got low survivability, no buffs for your group, no utility to get out of cc/sticky situations.
– people who are downed often get raised. Shooting them dead at range takes forever, meanwhile you’re not doing damage against the opponent team.

I’m not fully Berserk yet and I hit 10-13k. Once I have the remaining armor I’ll hopefully be able to get 15k and very situationaly more (fully buffed with 25 stacks of Might & enemy needs to be bleeding).

It’s not overpowered in my eyes. You’re sacrificing everything else the class has to offer in order to increase the damage-spike on one slow-casting burst-skill. It’s a one-trick pony, other classes also have these.
