WvW is the short bus of PvP.

People keep saying this, but somehow I think that a game mode with 0 build diversity whose entire goal is to sit on a point longer than someone else and has a mediocre following can’t really claim supremacy. Then there’s that whole eSport thing that imploded spectacularly and still has ANet feebly trying to promote it. ANet has finally decided to throw sPvP a bone by creating more match types. I guess over a year late is better than never?

WvW GvGs were pulling in 1k-2k viewers fairly consistently for the top guilds and 200-1k for the smaller guilds. That’s not a small number of viewers by any means, and they were happening almost every day of every week. I do agree that the vast majority of it is unskilled pugs who probably wouldn’t know what the terms synergy or optimization mean. However, I think people are remiss to ignore that entire side of the game because they drink the ANet kool-aid a little too heavily.

Anyways, back on topic: full cleric’s is bad in PvE and also very bad in WvW. In terms of PvE, you should be running full Berserker and learning how to dodge. As for WvW, you have zero vitality, low power, zero crit chance, and zero crit damage. You could easily drop down to 500 – 800 Healing Power and sit safely at 3.1k Armor, 1.9k-2k power, 20-30% crit chance, 60% crit damage, and 20k or so health. Healing power is a very good stat, but people tend to over-invest at the detriment of other stats.

Edit: I’d also like to know which server this Melody person is on. Judging by the use of the term Havoc, I’d guess one of the T1 blobfests.

Well, you’re asking for two separate things. If you want to use a mace/shield combo, you’re going to have to use a tanky build. If you want to use a greatsword, you might as well go full glass cannon if that’s all you’re going to be doing.

Though that build lacks the capabilities to heal yourself efficiently, it makes up for it by utilizing boons and really shows how good the Guardian’s Dps can actually be.

Im kinda liking this build you got set out here, what gear are you using (mace/shield, armor ?) .Primarily what i need this build for is dungeon running and some wvw but all of you are telling me there isnt a build that is balanced for both. What i want this build to have is primarily a shield. B

X/Shield can be as viable as X/Focus in terms of PvE DPS, so that problem can be easily resolved. However, I wouldn’t particularly recommend shield in WvW outside of roaming. Even then, I would argue that the 3x block+burst from focus 5 and blind/cleanse on the 5 would be much better. Even in zerg play, Mace+Shield/Staff is a very specialized build that requires a lot of fiddling to get right in terms of gear loadout and trait distribution. It’s good, but I’m more partial to something along the lines of the following:

That’s the bones of what I run, minus the optimization. You can easily eek out 200+ more Healing Power and still maintain almost the exact same Vitality, Toughness, Power, and Precision. You’ll also notice that I don’t have much more than 20% crit chance. In a zerg or group setting, you should have access to perma-fury, so a combined 50% chance is usually enough in a defensive frontline role. Even for DPS, I wouldn’t recommend venturing north of 35%-40%, because you’re often sacrificing lots of stats to hit those numbers.

Something I’ve noticed a lot on this forum is the underutilization of Celestial accessories. They’re extremely powerful in defensive builds to set a high baseline on which you can easily build your stats. What I mean is that they can provide phenomenal offensive stats (crit damage, crit chance, power) with very little, if no, loss to defensive stats (toughness, vitality, healing power). Healing power is also often ignored by people, even though a core functionality of our class, while specced defensively, revolves around passive and active healing.

Keep in mind that this is all for group WvW play. I wouldn’t use this kind of build for solo roaming because of the lack of gap closers and reliance on perma-fury. That said, I don’t enjoy Guardian roaming and tend to use my Mesmer for that side of the game.

You’re going to need two different gear sets no matter how you slice it. One for PvE (preferrably full berserker w/ Scholar runes, or you can go with training wheels Soldier/Zerk mix) and one for WvW. The two game types are fundamentally different, and so are their metas. Also, you’ll spec differently for roaming play than you would for zergplay, so there’s even a split in that regard.

What, specifically, do you intend to do?

Havoc Squad and Militia are both awful euphemisms. People need to stop using them. Better alternatives would be “Booty Poppers” and “Headless Pugtrain.”

If we stayed where we are, we would be 2nd of the middle league. A lot of us think we’re too big for that, so we’re pushing to get ranked 6th so we can be bottom of the top league.

We’d also end up with absolutely awful matches for 7 full weeks if we were stuck in Silver League. I’d probably either find another game or xfer servers if that ends up happening.

So, as of October 18th, Maguuma is doomed to have garbage matchups for an entire seven weeks. I’m so excited and definitely looking forwards to seasons, wow. WvW is in a phenomenal place right now and I am definitely not contemplating xferring servers/going to another MMO. Not one bit.

As a Guardian commander, you’re using your tag to guide MELEE around. The backliners’ job is essentially to maintain pressure on the enemy, stomp enemy backliners, apply long-range support, and survive. No where in that does it say that they should be on the commander’s tag pushing into the enemy’s lines. That’s bad practise and will get them killed. So, yes, you’ll be at the front of pushes the vast majority of the time.

As for build, I would go with a 0/5/30/30/5 AH-based build with GS/Staff. Typically, you would want to run the healing book, but, since you’re the commander, Renewed Focus may be the better option. It depends heavily on who you’re fighting. I’d also look into Celestial trinkets. I hit 3.1k Armor, 3k attack (~1.8-1.9k power), 25% crit chance, 65% crit damage, 880 Healing Power (with staff; 600 someodd with GS), and 20k Health with my 0/5/30/30/5 build. Runes of the Soldier, Sigils of Energy. Shelter, SYG, Hold The Line, and misc (I use SY, you might want Sig of Judgment) are your skills. Hold the Line is great for both easy Protection application for damage reduction on pushes and as a cleanse.

One of the biggest mistakes I see in Guardian WvW builds is ignoring Healing Power. Healing Power causes your dodge roll heals to tick for 800-1k HP, AH to give you around 60% of your health bar with a single Empower channel, Shelter to heal for over 5k, Regen to tick even harder, etc… Why you would ignore all this potential is beyond me. Another mistake I see is over-investing into Precision. In a zerg setting, you should have 100% uptime on Fury. If not, your Warriors and Elementalists need to step up their game big time. So, in a more defensive build, and even in most offensive builds, you really only need to hit 25-35% crit chance to really be effective. This is also why I think more than a couple pieces of Knight’s gear is an absolute waste. When I make a build for WvW, I always try and hit around the same ballpark for stats. 3k armor is a must, as is at least 18k-19k HP, 3k attack w/ GS and buffs, 25% crit chance, 800-900 Healing Power with Staff, and then I dump the rest into maximizing my crit damage. Since an AH build is 30 into Valor, you’re getting a free 30% crit damage from the build alone, so there’s a lot of room to min/max. Lastly, don’t forget about group-buff traits. Assume that Strength in Numbers at the least, and hopefully Empower Allies, too, will have 100% uptime on you. That’s another free 150 stat points that you can invest elsewhere.

Just as a bit of validation about my experience; I’m one of the core Guardians in a guild called Ark on Maguuma. We are currently the only guild in NA to take any meaningful number of matches off of GF in a GvG (the site has 2 wins for us officially registered, but we actually took a full 4 off; two were nulled because both sides had DCs, even though the same number of DCs happened for each side), and GF is most likely the second best guild in NA at the moment in the GvG scene. Possibly the best if they ever had a chance to fight against EP before the introduction of Bloodlust and EP’s xfer to T1. I also can count the number of times I die each week whilst raiding on a single hand, and Ark raids nightly. Anyways, I’m not trying to sound arrogant, I just want to say that I have a LOT of experience as a Guardian in an organized WvW setting, so I know what I’m talking about.

SoS has all of 3 people playing during NA times, and would win the entire league by virtue of a 695 PPT for ~8h while everyone is asleep. SBI, no idea; it’s been too long since we’ve faced them. If they have even one guild who plays during Oceanic/SEA, they’ll win against Maguuma handily, because coverage is king. All-in-all, sounds like a terrible set of weeks, enough to potentially make half of Maguuma quit.

I’d rather get my face smashed in by T1/T2 coverage but still have open-field fights that don’t require us to break down a tower or keep first.

Only one? couple days ago on EBG we ran omegas from one tower to another watching ehmry sit inside, waypoint when the wall dropped, and regroup in the next tower. Wasn’t really a surprise when they then lost the gvg yesterday

Well, apparently almost half of GF’s members have stopped logging in to WvW as of last patch, so I guess it’s only at 1 now? DR from BP was fairly enthusiastic about open-field, if nothing else, so I give them a lot of credit for that, too. Most guilds would rather sit in towers/keeps behind “siege superiority” than actually fight.

I notice that the “we don’t PPT” features a lot when Mags loses a fight or match, but you don’t see it much when they win a fight.

The only folks that I’ve seen that hold true to that motto all the time are Ark.

I promise you that the only PPT play Mag sees is its Karma Train. However, our main Karma Train commander hasn’t been on all week, so we haven’t even had that. Apparently the fellow is obsessed with FFXIV, although I have no idea why.

I don’t think you should be proud of beating Yak’s Bend. It’s like saying that you beat a paraplegic at a footrace. Not impressive at all against a server who loses 50% of its population once Monday rolls around.

I mean, admittedly, they were here for less than a month, but we did have Agg transfer over.

Before that, BURN/GOAT I think were the most recent. Worm and aZn are relatively new, too, I think.

But we don’t really recruit. A few other guilds have talked to me about transferring over, but generally we want them to transfer to servers around us so we can fight them, not superstack.

I do seem to recall a solid ‘Dont come to Maguuma’ thread when free xfers were ending. Im pretty sure that thread landed you a fair amount of xfers anyways but I dig your style.

Mag didn’t want to get bandwagoned up like a lot of other servers. I think that post worked spectacularly.

I didn’t really read through most of the posts, but what I can tell you is that you’re most likely playing your ele wrong. Ele, while very powerful at support, is also extremely important for applying constant pressure and bombing down clumps. If you over-invest into defense, you’re missing the point by a mile. The same goes for Guardians and Warriors. You don’t need to be 100% Soldier’s gear to survive and be effective. That said, you should strive for a minimum of 3k armor and around 20k HP, but you can hit those stats and still have over 60% crit damage, 30% crit chance (all that’s necessary due to perma fury uptime in zergs), 2900-3100 attack, etc…

Also, full Cleric’s is never, ever the solution.

Kaineng posters active on Anet forums have always their own viewpoints and are not afraid to post their thoughts if different from mine. They are individuals that can think. Compare this to some forum zergball that charge in blindly to win at all costs.

Why would anyone wanna go Maguuma at this time ? It’s not as famous as FA for GvG skilled groups and is languishing at 8th spot for months. You get more action in WvW and socializing on BG, TC which has extraordinary coordination among guilds (e.g. Teq kills) . Maguuma is at a terrible spot for the upcoming league system. It will probably be in the gold/premier league as the weakest link : meaning get prepared to be schooled hard by the Tier 1 and 2 servers.

Kaineng has fallen ranks due to transfers out but new commanders has stepped up to lead the casual players , more often in karma trains ( very profitable easy stuff choo choo ). There are also some veterans and small guild groups that enjoy doing heavy lifting work and craving out reputations for their guilds. There is no pressure to perform and we get hard, we get easy matches which will continue in the silver league as we are not the lowest server.

Same thing is happening here some nights. To us a 15+ man group is a zerg. There doesn’t seem to be many people interested in running 15 man hammer trains on EBay from what I can see. My suggestion would be to move to T1 where you will find a lot of guilds that run that meta but with the upcoming league system you are kind of kittened no matter what you do.

Edit: there’s also a LOT of misunderstanding around what a hammertrain actually is. The presence of hammer wars doesn’t mean you’re running a hammertrain. Agg runs a hammertrain because they are very frontline heavy.

I only brought it up because you said EB never goes open field unless they have a map queue behind him, something I found funny because I have only ever seen Ark zerg themselves. Interestingly enough I actually saw an Ark roaming duo shortly after my first post. I chuckled when I realised they were both running perplexity engi cheese.

There was no GH raid last night. The only raid which was happening is a karma train group which is all PuGs. If you heard that, it wasn’t GH. Also, if you had to resort to stream-sniping to figure out where a large karma train is, then I suggest you learn to watch maps better. Such actions are only showing your own flaws (especially since a majority of the streamers from Ehmry run with a delay.

We actually didn’t find out about the stream until we finished raiding for the night. Watched the archived stream out of curiosity and to see what you guys were doing. I get that it was probably a karma train, Mag has one, too. You’ll see it flipping entire maps during EU time this week. Not the point.

Also, we lose matches against T2 servers because of coverage. Mag has exactly 0 SEA/Oceanic/EU guilds. We have one oceanic commander who doesn’t play on weekends and usually gets only 15-30 people. Our NA is more than enough to deal with T2 servers. Although, pretty sure there isn’t a single soul on Mag who actually cares about PPT, because a good open-field fight is worth far more than an extra keep flip just in time for the point tick.

Anyways, I encourage any guild to fight us open-field with something smaller than a queue blob or a voltron blob, because that’s where the fun is. I promise you that Ark won’t quit after getting wiped a couple times.

idk, personally I’m annoyed that we’ve been forced into crappy matchups for 3 weeks in a row. Also annoyed that, every single night, we have to resort to sieging something to force EBay out to play. I’m honestly just bored out of my mind and a bit bitter, I guess.

Also, I’ve yet to find a good roamer outside of GF.
