i think she might be bald, and that the disappearing hair caused by that helmet is just ANet’s (poor) way of handling clipping, much like it happens with many other headgear options (try the ceremonial hat or the witch hat in any character).

she looks find though. most asuras do, unless you’re too used to seeing them with hair.

i doubt the tengu that live nowadays are interested in living in the land of their grandfathers, knowing the stories that they were told, much like the asuras of today probably don’t care for dampy, dark caves.

BrunoBRS.5178

i’ll be honest, this thread is full of posts that are way too long for me to read, much less the devs that have hundreds of topics to go through as well as work on the game. keep it condensed, keep it a core concept. devs aren’t going to copy your posts into the code no matter how amazing they are, so instead you should focus on giving concise suggestions.

This made me laugh so hard I actually choked on my drink.
Obviously you did not read the previous draft that led up to this concise version. I am not a politician. I am not here to say “Vote for me” as a shorthand for all of my propositions. I am going to make sure I can list every single point I have in a few characters as I can, and not lose the original focus.

If I was here just to spit words, I would be in the sPvP thread. The developers do read my posts, quite often. I know this for a fact because I have talked with, and been infracted by them for getting overly zealous.

Also. If I say, “Add more skill” people’s response will be “no” or “yes.” Nothing intelligent, no productivity. Although you, and possibly many others may be content with incomplete, or lacking content, I pride myself on doing every bit of research and accumulating it into a concise source.

If this concise version is too large for you, I suggest picking up a novel, or picking up a sport that you are extremely good at and letting the coaches do the reading and tell you what to do.

Part of being well informed is being able and willing to read. If this does not interest you, you are more than welcome to skip the thread. No need for a comment about length. Because many others are happy with the length.

Thanks for the understanding.

you might want to look up the term “concise”, but i digress.

even if this is your “edited and compacted” version of a much longer post, it’s still very long. i’m not telling you to say something as raw as “add new skills”, i’m just asking you to be to the point. you want new skill systems? cool. say how they would work, the reasons it wouldn’t break the balance if properly managed, and why do you think it has to be added. don’t go in too much detail, because on a suggestions board, that’s a waste of digital space.

a perfect example of a combat suggestion thread done right is the one going on about new uses for the endurance bar. every post is one, two paragraphs at most, which means more people are willing to read and discuss the suggestions, and everything is presented in a crystal clear, concise format.

it has nothing to do with not liking to read, it has to do with being good at writing, and not drag for too long. no one likes long winded ramblings, much less when only a fraction of what the rambles are saying (the “core concept”) matter.

my suggestion is not one i particularly think would work, but it’s a nice direction they could go with.

eventually, we’ll run out of weapons to give the players. then comes the time where you need to expand on the existing weapons. how? my idea are actually two, and i think it’s a “one or the other” situation. together, they’d just mess everything up and be too complicated.

the first idea is give alternate skill sets to a weapon. so if a greatsword gives you certain 5 skills, you could opt on the hero panel to use another set of 5. you could pick either one set or another, but not mix and match them. that way you have essentially two weapons in one weapon type. for all practical effects, picking which set to use would function just like picking which weapon to use, so you wouldn’t be able to switch between skills unless you have the same weapon on both weapon sets

.

the second idea is adding weapon traits. if you’ve played diablo 3, think of that. essentially, you can equip each skill with one of a few “traits” that change its properties. for example, a thief’s unload could have a trait that makes the skill fire in a cone, rather than forward. this kind of improvement would add a lot of depth to weapon skills, and could potentially lead to a myriad of new combinations.

of course, the downside here is that a revamp of that magnitude to existing skills would shake the balance heavily, and many weapon skills just aren’t interesting enough to have all these different “flavors” added.

You realize that is basically a dumbed down version of everything on my post, right?

-Cone effect would be an Effect.
-You simply removed mixing and matching from my current setup.

>.> Just saying.

read my other post on this thread.

“this thread has too many posts that are too long for me to bother reading, so i won’t read them”, or something like that.

and this isn’t a contest to see who brought up a suggestion that may make it to the game. if your suggestion is like mine, then you should be glad, because it means there is more than one people in favor of your suggestion.

Help with thief dungeon build

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: BrunoBRS.5178

BrunoBRS.5178

i have a general PVE build that makes use of the fact that thief can get a lot of hits per second, even if they don’t damage much, to sustain my health without making use of a healing skill (not actively, anyway).

so i use dual daggers, spec into condition damage and healing power, with power and vitality as secondaries to support damage and survivability. so mostly shaman-esque and carrion armor, with rampager weapons.

skill-wise and trait-wise, i use this:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fYAQRAoY6alcmKP3eS5E+5EBPDjiU/Dkt7xVtqWB

(might need to copypaste the link, the forums don’t like gw2skills’ links :P)

with a set of superior runes of the undead (high toughness and condition damage), a superior sigil of corruption and a sigil of choice.

i heal about 120 health per hit. each caltrops tick on each enemy counts as an individual hit, each of the 3 hits of death blossom per enemy counts as a hit. i heal about 90 health per initiative point spent, so i can heal about 1k health per death blossom, when fighting a single enemy. with groups it’s even better. if you’re low on health and there are multiple enemies around, popping dagger storm is a guaranteed full heal.

basically, the build is designed for high DoT AoE output and high survivability, while not being completely useless on other scenarios (i still hit for 3k damage when i crit heartseeker on a low-health enemy, or when i backstab).

^ the problem, however, would be that you’d start adding too many keys.

how would the parry work? would it consume endurance beforehand? sprint could be done by holding down the dodge key, but what of people that use double tap?

tumble, functionally, could be mapped exactly the same way as dodging (double tap or key pressed), because you can’t dodge while knocked down, so it makes sense to use the “endurance button/command” to get back on your feet.

tumbling would probably require more endurance consumption than a dodge though, because while it isn’t a full evade (and as such you lose health to the attack), the desired effect of knocking down is nulled despite the attacked player having failed to evade.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

BrunoBRS.5178

what happened to dynamic scaling? there are so many events in lower population areas that have become simply impossible because you’ll never manage to get 10+ people in the same spot to punch a giant for 10 minutes for a mere event reward, that they just remain there, not doing anything.

the most common example are the giants, like the one in diessa plateau and the one in harathi hinderlands. they take forever to die, don’t scale at all, require a ton of people to be taken down, and give little to no reward beyond the event medal.

This is just not true at all. First, some of the events are clearly flagged as group events and you shouldn’t be expecting those events to scale down cleanly to a point where they can be soloed as easily as they can be handled with a group.

As for the giants, they do scale. Three of us took down the champion giant in Harathi with very little effort.. just took time. But it takes time whether there are three players or thirty fighting him. The more players are involved, the larger his health pool gets.

As for players saying it’s not worth it, the giant is part of an event chain that eventually gives you access to a skill point in an area you normally can’t access without participating in a much more difficult centaur meta event. It’s odd he’s being used as an example of events that don’t work well with smaller populations when he is literally the back door to that skill point for players who don’t have enough numbers to take on the centaur meta event.

I haven’t run into a normal event (not flagged as a group event) that can’t be beaten with one or two players.

i don’t think you get my point.

without being scaled down, to soloable levels, eventually the whole map will be full of events no one does, because it takes too much time and gives too little reward. the centaur chain you mentioned gives a ton of gold, karma and exp, because you’re fighting multiple enemies across multiple events. and it takes just as long as killing the giant to complete that entire chain.

if you want to see an example of what the outcome of bad scaling does, open you map, and look at straits of devastation. half the waypoints are contested (literally half), because of event chains that are impossible by yourself and have no relevant rewards, so people just run straight through them.

the issue here is that all of the content the devs have put in the game will become less and less relevant, or even doable, with time, because as they add more content to the game and the population spreads out, less people will be around in each area to do those events.

as a result, you’ll have a map full of events you’re supposed to ignore, and now we’re back to the static, unchanging game world of other MMOs. because if there is no way to complete an event, it might as well not be there.

More answers:

-Kodan:

I don’t think Kodan are viable. They’re too plain, their models have a lot of work on them (unlike tengu and largos, which you can tell aren’t final at all), they don’t seem to have lot of customization (fur is white on all of them, and using tattoos instead of fur color could work, but resembles the norn too much). Also, the norn are already able to shapeshift into bear-men. I feel they’re pretty well established to be a minor race, like quaggan, skritt, ogres, etc.

Also, they speak weird, and I don’t think weird-speaking races are good enough for something that must please a high number of customers.

they “speak weird”? really?

and they’re not estabilished as a lesser race. the lesser races are the 3 you mentioned plus hyleks and grawl. those are the races that the 3 orders consider “lesser”.

the kodan models are as varied as the tengu models. you have literally just two models so far (same amount as the tengu, BTW). saying that “tattoos are too similar to norn customization” is like saying sylvaris shouldn’t be there because they have ear customization just like asuras, or that humans shouldn’t be there because they lack secondary customization options.

the norn can turn into a man-bear thing. the kodans ARE them. kodans wear armor and wield weapons on that form, whereas norns are just, well, beasts.

the shapeshifting is part of the norn’s nature. make no mistake, they are not humans.

in fact, their “human” form is hinted at to be just something they’re more comfortable with.

the kodan believes the norns are descendant from a kodan tribe that was lost after they lost their Voice, and that their shapeshifting is a result of that “impurity”.

@Bruno, idealistically, they’re unique, I’ll admit. I just think physically, we already have a large/buff character in the Norn, and they are possibly ancestors of the Norn. They aren’t shown with much variety of weapons (neither do Largos).

considering the norn are, visually, just tall humans, i don’t think aesthetics are reason to drop a race. they have a vast culture with a lot of potential for exploration, they are a more relevant race against jormag than any other, and they are not considered a “lesser” race (on the contrary, the kodan think they are superior to everyone else and are there to teach us lesser beings).

their culture also incentives going out in the world and “restoring balance”, which make kodan adventurers quite feasible.

as for weaponry, i don’t see norns having issues using asuran and charr technology, and kodan have shown to be able to forge (where do you think they got their armors?), so there is nothing restricting them here.

Dredgehaunt Cliffs: Sadistic Level Design?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: BrunoBRS.5178

BrunoBRS.5178

There are three types of Dredge on the way up, and only the Oscillators have knockback. The knockback has two characteristics: it knocks you back a few feet (1/3 to 1/2 of a ramp length), and it knocks you straight back from the direction of the attack. Knowing this, it’s simply a matter of positioning yourself so the Oscillator is at the top of a ramp, and you are facing straight up the ramp while facing him. Doing this, his knockback will send you straight down the ramp, but not over the edge.

I think you’re mixing up two different zones (as I was when I made that post). It sounds like you’re talking about the vista where you have to go up straight ramps that turn at right-angles to one another, making your way towards a central area with a veteran and the vista. I also did that and had no problems with it.

But I’m talking about a dredge area where the ramp is a tight circular spiral. What happens is you get stuck with two enemies right in front of you, and an oscillator will come down the spiral from higher up, hitting you consistently at such an angle that you go flying far, far off the edge. There’s absolutely no way he can hit you back a little way down the spiral because, as I say, of the tightness of the spiral.

edit Here’s a picture. Imagine an oscillator standing at any point up the ramp from you. His attack is always going to hit you off the edge of the ramp, not down it.

http://gw2.mmorpg-life.com/img/map_pois/Frostgorge_Sound_poi_Vista_image_Gw2_1_2012_09_07_15_01_01_031.jpg

the worst part about that vista (and many others that involve fighting your way through vertical areas) is when you reach the top, and some random mob you haven’t killed, but is miles below you won’t disengage for whatever reason, and because of that you can’t get the vista.

BrunoBRS – are you talking about the jumping puzzle that ends in a veteran fight on a tiny ledge?

I quite enjoyed that one, but yes, it’s sadistic – firtly, it’s one of the jumping puzzles that relies on dodgy physics – some jumps are only possible through mid-air turning and landing on thin air. Secondly, to put a vet at the end in such a tiny space (and one that turns into lots of little creatures half way through the fight) is just plain evil.

i don’t recall if it was a veteran (there was a veteran on the first puzzle, but that had plenty of space to fight), but there were enemies on tiny ledges at the end of it. their chills and the puzzle’s hazards combined made for a recipe of rage.

i think we’re talking about different puzzles though. the one i’m talking about is on SW dredgehaunt cliffs, where there are all those dredge turrets. there’s a jumping puzzle to reach the vista there, you fight a mob, get the treasure, and instead of leaving, there’s a tiny hole in the wall you can go through for a second puzzle.

the puzzle itself would be fun, weren’t it for the forced combat situations and the fact that dying meant going all the way back to the waypoint, running to the first puzzle, doing the first puzzle, heading down the hole, and THEN starting the puzzle all over again.

But thats just how things are, so it´s just logical that at final fight he threw all what he got on us (in terms of minions)…Besides, I don´t know if you´ve heard Zojjas technical babble about the canon (I hadn´t the chance, really) but as much as I understanded it was build specifically to weaken an Elder Dragon so it was not just “a canon”, it was “the canon”.
But really, how you imagined the last fight? And don´t say clashing at his claw like every other boss, it´d be sad if 5 people (10 if you count Destiny´s Edge) would kill Zhaitan, who is threatening all of Tyria, just with swords and fireballs…

the problem isn’t using cannons to kill him, the problem is that you spend 10 minutes pressing 2 without any reason to do anything else, without even seeing if you’re actually hitting him (the game doesn’t even consider you in-combat while you’re firing at him), and without any enthusiasm because he just stays there, still.

this is an example of a fight that uses similar mechanics to the dragon champion fights that take place before zhaitan, can be easily done on GW2, and is far more engaging than zhaitan.

you have to fire cannons, avoid invoming damage, attack occasional mobs that make it inside the ship, time the attack from the rope darts (in GW2’s case, those pink lasers) that hold him still temporarily, allowing you to jump on it for a few seconds to hit specific weakspots, and time the attack of the super OP lance of doom (or in GW2’s case, the asuran megalaser) to deal massive damage and prevent the ship from being struck. and you can fall by accident, which prompts a rope rescue that forces you out of battle while your character climbs it (in GW2’s case, waypoints replace that).

in fact, i’d be happy if what we got was only a larger scale version of the dragon champion fights we had before zhaitan himself. they were amazing, had a great atmosphere, and involved fighting minions as well as manning cannons to kill the dragon. i actually thought the zhaitan fight would be more of that, and i was hyped for more of that.

A more creative approach to dungeon creation

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

i just would like dungeons to be more well designed and varied, with interesting mechanics, but it seems those are restricted to the (awesome) minidungeons, and the main ones get the “corridor of mobs with the occasional ‘press this button’ moment” treatment.

i’d also point out that i LOVE and would like to see a lot more puzzle-ish boss fights, like in CoF story and SE story, as well as more bosses with cool mechanics, like liutenant kohler in AC explorable or that skelk from the new dungeon added in dredgehaunt cliffs. for those who don’t know, in that dungeon, skelks can’t take damage in the darkness, and everything is pitch black except for your torch and some areas you can light up. so the boss fight is a nice struggle to balance damage, keeping the place lit, and keeping the boss from putting out the lit areas.

will we ever be allowed to trade old AC/CM gear for the new ones?

You might as well just buy a new set and salvage the old by now. If it is AC and just shoulders it should take about 3 full runs or so. So either 1 hour 1/2 max or three days (if you do one dungeon per day).

i’m going to buy a new one off the TP and transmute, if i have to.

i just wish ANet had been more honest, rather than making an empty promise.

if they add a new race alongside jormag, it’ll be the kodan, as they are, after the norn, the main major race being affected by him.

Logan Thackeray: "Hodor hodor hodor!"

in Lore

Does anyone else find it amusing that while Logan seems to get by far the most flack out of any of DE, he’s the most useful in terms of actual gameplay?

None of the other members of DE actually DO anything of note in the entire campaign or dungeon other than wack a few enemies with their paper machete weapons.

Logan at least is shown, again in game, to be a powerful enough Guardian to tank Gaheron Baelfire indefinitely.

No one else in DE does anything on that scale within the actual game, which to me is where the burden of story has to stay.

i actually brought up just yesterday on the dungeon forum that they should bump destiny’s edge usefulness (or at least their estimated lifespan to something more than 3 seconds) in story dungeons, because it’s hard to believe in heroes that lay dead on the first sign of threat, and then don’t move again.

Death vs Death - Necromancers and Zhaitan

in Lore

Did not Zhaitan desires immortality there are a few parts of the personal story that show this including the one where a reaper of Grenth demands you kill a risen priest that condemns Grenth because Zhaitan promises eternal life to him. Necromancy among the playable races is more along the lines of respecting the fact that life ends and to show they don’t fear their mortality.

zhaitan doesn’t desire immortality. it doesn’t desire anything. zhaitan is an elder dragon, a being of pure destruction. a giant undead dragon that can raise a nation from the bottom of the ocean can probably fool a human with promises of immortality, doesn’t mean the dragon is actively searching of means of achieving it. the only thing zhaitan cares (cared) about is destruction, and expanding his influence, and consuming.

as for necromancers, they are just adepts of necromancy in the same way elementalists are adepts of elemental magic. there is no philosophy behind a profession, they work just like job skills would in real life. sure, many human necros may follow Grenth, which is the god of balance, but that’s limited to humans (other races don’t worship, or even believe in, the human gods), and even then it’s limited to the humans that still believe in the six gods, and EVEN THEN, that’s limited to the human necromancers who believe in the six gods and worship Grenth specifically.

there was a priest in guild wars factions, he mentioned how some people think each profession should follow a specific god, and that it is incorrect. a necromancer can be an adept of Dwayna or Melandru just as well as an adept of Grenth.

you mean you think they did a nice job about not making a big deal out of same-sex relationships, instead treating them the same way as any heterossexual relationship?

then yes, i agree.

also making one of the main characters lesbian and not making a big deal of it, rather than make her go “LOOK AT ME I’M SO GAY PLEASE LOOK AT ME” as some other writers like to portray homossexuals.
