The great thing about dueling servers is that you often find people you can either help, learn from, or run tourneys with. I was able to help a fledgling engi figure out blast finishers, learn about a tanky engi option I hadn’t thought of and find a new group of guys to do paids with all in the same day because of dueling servers. If you see a server with only 3-5 people in it, check it out, who knows what you might find

It’s actually a lot more difficult to land then you think. If you avoid the Magnet Pull/Net Shot, etc this burst becomes infinitely more difficult to land, as it requires you to be inside the enemy’s character model. Retaliation also causes the Engi to burst himself into oblivion, so that’s also a good counter. Best advice I can give you is if you see an engi running straight towards you, it wouldn’t be a horrible idea to keep your distance lol

I’m filing a bug report on this, since if this is an intended game mechanic, they may as well bury this game. I though thieves had insane burst, but they don’t even compare to this.

Hi OGDeadHead,

The screenshot you posted includes 19-20 hits of grenade barrage (depending on if you double counted one). This is at least two different occasions of you taking grenade barrage(s), or two different engineers barraging you. (Or you’ve simply exaggerated the damage for effect.)

In terms of sacrifice vs. gains, risk vs. reward, Engineer burst is balanced vs. other power burst builds. Sure, in the current incarnation of the game – burst abilities are quite potent, this is obvious. But let me explain exactly why the risk of sucking, and the sacrifices of a glass cannon engineer makes it so this kind of damage is justified.

I’ll start by explaining what it’s like to double grenade barrage someone. Have you ever watched anyone play those silly ‘Dance Dance Revolution’ games where every move is judged as a ‘PERFECT, GREAT, GOOD’ score based on how close the user input lined up with the mark? Maybe 40% of the time am I landing “PERFECT” 16/16 grenades when executing this combo. That’s a pretty low success rate! Maybe 30% of the time I’m landing 14/16 grenades. That’s a ‘GREAT’ score. The other 30%? This is the percentage where your net shot flies off into the horizon, your magnet sends your target teleporting around everywhere, and muscle memory lobs 16 grenades where your target used to stand. This is as ‘FAIL’ score. You are now up kitten creek without a paddle. Or disengage abilities.

Basically, your Engi burst damage output is actively rated on your positioning, focus, and how badly you want to bathe your target in their own blood. There is no ‘pressez les buttons’ from 900 range and shatter combo / steal combo for your guaranteed damage. (All these scenarios are assuming you did not combo into a dodge or defensive CD.) It’s like backstab only did max damage when you were perfectly 180’ degrees behind your enemy, and face-stabbing an enemy did nothing.

Toss in the scarcity of invisibility / movement skills / condi clearing – you still need to churn out the gibs every minute for your team to win matches.

With great power comes great responsibility, haha.

The best counter for this is stability (and of course do not let the engineer get right on top of you). If you have stability and a ranged attack they will likely just run away (or die).

Sometimes those little Asurian engis can be an issue though, because you can’t see them behind the blades of grass until they are suddenly running between your legs and then -boom!

I don’t see you having a problem with it when the engi shows up to back point to bail you out

I apologize for inferring DS can be used to soak up damage. Running D/D Necro I found DS to be extremely useful for a 976 toughness build, as soaking up a huge chunk of burst without using my actual health was quite useful. Apparently referring to this as ‘damage mitigation’ is incorrect. My bad.

Then whoever did it must have skills far beyond mine, as I’ve had the combo miss quite a few times because of a mist form/elixir s, etc. Just read through the thread and see some of the disadvantages of the build. Other than that, I don’t think there’s much else I can say. Good luck!

Even a full zerker well necro played correctly has more survivability than any other glassy prof who don’t have our aoe potential.

Sorry but necro has not more survivability than other glassy profs.
Survivability in gw2 is not about who has the highest life pool, but more about hard damage mitigation and escape.
Necro has the highest hp pool of all class but lacks in the mitigation and escape department. All in all, necros’ survivability is not high at all.

They have pretty kitten good mitigation actually. You know it as ‘Death Shroud’.

I hear you on this man, funnyest thing ever.

The thing about 100nade roaming is, I don’t see this build fighting 3-4 opponent at the same time like a good mesmer/DDElem/Thief can do. I have some issue fighting more then 2 oponent at the same time.

I think we are more a hit and run build type. I go in invis, burst one down, finish him with elixir s, then run away. Rince and repeat, and like Choops said, try to bait them in chasing you, just to turn back and destroy them.

Zerg usually don’t communicate too well, you can kill slower player or overextended player.

I thought I was alone abusive that, I’m happy to learn I’m not.

Yeah, same here. If you’re hoping to come out on top of a 2v1, you better hope they’re both melee and one of them isn’t a thief lol. I try to soften people up with my rifle until they get right around half health, basically right before they are going to heal. After that hopefully the ’nade combo is enough to drop them and Elixir S stomp FTW.

To succeed in a 2v1, you basically need to down the first enemy in the first 5 seconds of an encounter. Focus on controlling the dangerous power burst (thief, war) if applicable. Occasionally the other enemy will commit to ressing his teammate and you can nearly body beat both of them into the ground. If you manage to get a down with your grenade barrage still un-used – if they try to res, it’s like an auto-win.

Except for these rare occasions, it’s best to just Rifle Jump away from any 2v1 situation much like an 100b warrior would.

I, for one, know that I would lose my ability to play my Engineer if it was a human. I hate this thread for how stupid it is to assume that everyone picked Asura entirely for PvP benefit, I hate this thread for the excuse it gives people to hide behind a person’s choice of race for the reason that they’re getting beaten, but most of all, I hate this thread for making me agree with jportell lol

Serious rage issues. The point must be pretty valid with you getting so upset. Point is, they are smaller and harder to target, you can’t deny the truth/facts. Now, you can debate to how much of factor is that in a fight. Well…. that is for everyone to have their own opinion.

You have no idea. I read this thread and screamed “GRRRRR CHOOOPS SMASSSHHH” and started throwing things out my window. Tried to throw the cat, but I found it really difficult and missed frequently, because it’s smaller than I am.

As all of us engineers know our gadgets are quite underwhelming (so is our turrets but that’s for another thread)

Personal Battering Ram – Make it a cone-like attack hitting up to 3 opponents, and also increase the range to 400.

Rocket Boots – Since this skill basically stuns you for a good 2-3 seconds it’s basically useless right now. So to combat this I would make the skill do a AOE knock down all around it (like thumper turret)

Slick shoes – Fine how it is

Throw Mine- I don’t really have any ideas for this one, don’t really like this skill at all.

Utility Goggles – Every hit while utility goggles is active now causes vulnerability

If anyone has more suggestions feel free to share them.

Love the Rocket Boots idea, as it would actually provide a use that a kit can’t fulfill. Which brings me to your Battering Ram suggestion, why wouldn’t you just bring FT, as the knockback is pretty much this, will most likely have a shorter CD and brings other skills with while still only occupying 1 slot.

flamethrower isnt really a knockdown or a knockdown, its more of a push.

Yes, I really am. What I’ve read is the majority of you saying you can’t see the animations for skills, with about 2% of you actually giving examples of what skills are difficult to read. Since everyone seems to have problems reading animations from Asura all the time (which must be why we’re just seeing a thread about it now), it shouldn’t be too hard to see the public outcry of all these animations that are being missed that are absolutely game shattering for all of you. Remove your palm from your face, rest it on your keyboard, and start typing bucko.

The only problem with asking them to change size/ban Asuras is that people might actually have to play with some slight skill instead of relaying on passive choices made regarding race/build. You should know by now that the majority of sPvPers don’t’ play to showcase skill but to cheese other people. The backlash from all the unskilled Mesmers/Thiefs/Guardian Asuras would be huge. Granted they still have their Op classes to fall back on, but they would still cry.

I think it’s a matter of the players drinking some coffee and grinding out new builds. Take trap ranger its been there since day 1. People just figured it out.

I said this in another thread, but it rings true here as well. It’s hard to grind out new builds when some utilities are just completely inferior in every way shape and form. I can’t vouch for a lot of other profs, as I pretty much only play one, but turrets/gadgets are for the most part completely useless for Engineers. The only reason to make a gadget build (and believe me, I’ve tried) is simply for the sake of making it to be a precious and unique snowflake. A very ineffective snowflake, but unique none the less

We have it as a side effect of a utility, one that most engis don’t take. I can vouch that we are still as susceptible to blinds as anyone else lol

Agreed. There used to be kind of a ramp up when you started playing/testing a new build. OK, I can hold my own in hotjoin, now let’s try frees. OK, good enough, on to paids! Now there’s sadly no middle stage of testing. I’ve been trying to bring back my old P/P condition build, it works great in hotjoin, but any time I’ve tried to test it in frees, it takes almost an hour for one to pop, and when it does, one person doesn’t accept on my team, so we’re stuck with a 4v5. At this point, someone else figures out that we’re outmatched and leaves as well. Long story short, I can’t tell if my build sucks for survivability or that’s just a byproduct of being outnumbered 5-3 lol.

Some people like the appearance of running faster (even though movement speed is the same between all races) and the totally awesome backflip dodge, should I be penalized for my aesthetic taste by playing a race I don’t like the look of? Somehow the game has managed to be just fine for all these months without this distinct advantage we’ve had. Someone said the hitboxes are the same, so if that’s true, sorry, not that big a deal. I swear, people will find the stupidest things to complain about. Make the only playable race human, the only playable profession Elementalists, the only usable weapons D/D and no choices for builds, just static skills, utilities, traits. Every problem in the forums solved!

Its funny because the only reason the other characters run so slow is because of the asura. If you sped up the character run speeds from their slow motion jog to a realistic pace, the asura would turn into roadrunners/sonic the hedgehog. The hitboxes are indeed the same, but this leads to another problem, as ive noted before. The asura can strike from a deceptively far distance. You dont seem to understand the concept of balance, so i wont talk any further about it, but it is suffice to say that variety and viability are not mutually exclusive, due in large to proper balancing.

I understand the concept balance, I’m just apparently the only one that thinks it’s amusing that we’ve fallen so far as a community that we’ve gotten to a point where in a game that there are no racial abilities in PvP, a race is OP.

Most people pick Asura because the animations are smaller, and is it no a coincidence that a lot of people do say the Asura has a slight advantage in this department. Also the smallest size? Why would you make it the smallest size possible if you aren’t trying to gain an unfair advantage. Oh right because if there isn’t an advantage gained(there is), people will still cut corners especially for their E.

Because not everyone wants to play an asura and they shouldnt be penalized for their preference.

Example: A new ability, lets say giant kitten form complete with svanir claws and 100b, is granted to players who “like” the game on facebook. Not everyone uses facebook (which is a free service) and dont want to go through the hassle of signing up just to be on the same level as other players.

How is it unfair when you have the option of signing up on facebook and receiving this new super cool ability?

Because people shouldnt be penalized for not using facebook.

People dont want to look like a little dumpy kitten gremlin that looks like it was designed by an overactive 6 year old.

Hahaha Ive been called a hacker using 100nades also. Love this build, it has as many weaknesses as other GC builds except ranger, they cant even run GC. But its high skill cap=high reward, master engi and you will probably never get bored.

My favorite thing is killing other 100nades engineers and then saying * you cant do it like I can son, schools open * they get so mad. Except this one guy, 1 shot him and all he said was burst at its finest, nice build. Kinda disappointed me lol.

I find shroudstomping is great even when you’re not traited into stability. If someone else comes up to interrupt you, you can fear mid stomp and even if you start getting hit, hey at least it’s not your health taking the beating.

If this went through, (which it won’t) then afterwards Norn and Charr players could argue that Sylvari and Human players were potentially too small and it was not as easy for you to see their animations. BANNED. Then Norns would feel that the Charr were slightly smaller than them, and they were harder to click then other Norn players. BANNED. Now it would be just Norn Wars 2 and the game would be left in a terrible state where everyone playing will have run out of things to complain about, forcing them to actually get good at the game. It would be terrible. Catastrophic. ANARCHY.

Should be a hitbox fix, not an actual size rendering fix. The MMO that shall not be named has made it just fine with tiny characters in their games, if hitbox is the same equally across races there should be no problem. The fact that it’s really only affecting thieves makes me even more glad I run Asura on all my characters. That being said, plenty of thieves seem to hit me just fine for BS. Can’t wait to hear that I beat someone because I’m too tiny…

I meant no disrespect to gkaare, but c’mon, these bugs have been around forever with very few fixes being made. It’s frustrating to have the same obstructed bugs now that I had on launch day.

As I have suggested already..to proclame yourself as a pro player doesn’t automatically makes you one, to say :" I can multiclass" means that you can’t play well any of those classes…

The problem is no one takes you seriously because you troll any thread that suggests that eles shouldn’t stay exactly how they are. Maybe less personal attacks, more hard facts. Just my 2 cents.

Lately I have been running boon stripping/converting on my necro and chewing up the currently viewed as OP eles, guardians, and sometimes mesmers. This really got me thinking about how much a build effects how I view other classes. Thieves were a pain till I went into aoe and fears to counter them too. But what if I was a power necro? All these things wouldn’t be in my build and those classes with there builds would feel really OP. Right now rangers are kicking my kitten and I hear a power burst build helps with that. The whole thing makes me wonder how much of the QQ is build related.Also how much of it would go away if classes had more viable builds.Right now even the most complete classes only have a couple viable builds and its just not enough.

No…you are neither a Pro player and neither you know what you’re talking about, the guy quoted above was the norm in GW1, people like you are the norm in GW2, therefore without any doubts I can say that the PvP level in GW2 is galaxies away from GW1, to talk about balance with any “top player” in GW2 it’s like talking about balance with a r2 gladiator from GW1

As I have suggested already..to proclame yourself as a pro player doesn’t automatically makes you one, to say :" I can multiclass" means that you can’t play well any of those classes…

The problem is no one takes you seriously because you troll any thread that suggests that eles shouldn’t stay exactly how they are. Maybe less personal attacks, more hard facts. Just my 2 cents.

Hahaha Ive been called a hacker using 100nades also. Love this build, it has as many weaknesses as other GC builds except ranger, they cant even run GC. But its high skill cap=high reward, master engi and you will probably never get bored.

also, I find it helpful to hotjoin with this build. Yes, the zerg is kryptonite for us, but it’s a good way to learn to deal with an ‘oh kitten’ situation so you have a good idea how to play when it all goes to hell.

the best part is landing it on a thief or mes and one shotting them. grenades go off, thief or mes is nowhere to be found…. wait for it….. invisibility wears off….ah, there they are! lying on their back, with their hand reaching towards the heavens as if to say ‘why god? why did I underestimate the engineer?’

As soon as bunker ele’s get their nerf bunker mesmers will take over! Full uptime on retaliation/regen/ 1/2 uptime protection and a personal tank! Then people will stop crying about shatter mesmers and start crying about bunker mesmers! HA. As if that will actually happen I can tell you right now that there are builds in other classes that may not out bunker an ele but the can certainly match it easily and not just my class (mesmers) but rangers and engis too people just haven’t tried to find them!

You have admitted that you don’t even play spvp, why are you here spreading your wisdom?

Actually sir I do. Just not as much as you HARDCORE elitist R45+ people. But I do it enough to know that A) A bunker Mesmer can easily push a bunker ele off a node. It can take a 100B warrior and a guardian and a thief to recap the node and more if I have the chance to get my ranger teammate to help me out from high ground. So yes I am saying there are viable builds that can push ele’s and it all comes down to who bunkers better. In a duel a bunker Mesmer and a bunker ele will literally fight forever (I’ve done it, we had to call the fight at a draw.)

Edit: This experience is from Tournies not hotjoins just in case you wanted to try and pull that card.

Oh hey its the OP 100nades engi! Yah I learned from more matches that they are all the same but that is in maps only. BTW I outbunkered your guardian and got my revenge on you toward the end of the match you guys wiped the floor with us points wise but knowing that I was playing against you made it slightly more personal and I don’t spend all my time in GW2 hovering on one map trying to get QP I actually like WvW best but do PvP when my guild asks me for fun not for status. But it was fun playing against you guys.

Hey that 100nades is no joke! And honestly engi’s should be able to walk all over mesmers CONDITIONS CONDITIONS CONDITIONS. Not only that but reliable AOE conditions that put the necro to shame.

I did a couple paids tonight with three engies, a necro, and a warrior. After we won a match one of them was calling us names in map chat for using “OP classes.” It was…humorous.

lol, I get that sometimes because of the 100 nades burst. I think the OP calling would drop a little if people knew how often things go wrong for that setup before you finally get 1 that lines up perfectly.

I wouldn’t recommend doing frees, at least not without a full group. Tried with 1 other guildie tonight and ended up playing 3 games with 1 person short, then 2 people short and then finally the last game was just me and him. But people are scumbags, what are ya gonna do

If it’s just the language that’s upsetting to someone, mature filter is an option. If not, you can always block the person. kitten talking has always been a part of online gaming, I don’t think this game is going to be the one that’s immune to it.

Man If you think it’s buggy in tPvP, never try it in WvW.

I swear I get a random effect each time I cast it.

1. Send the enemy flying in the air
2. Pull the enemy half way.
3. Doesn’t pull at all.
4. Pull it to the side
5. Pull it behind you.
6. Pull it half way, then it’s lag and he appear behind you.
7. Pull it to your feet.

So annoying.

This, a million times this. The worst is where it bounces them like 50 feet in the air, just because it’s hard to get back in the game when you’re laughing lol

you can’t just run in get melee range and start bashing your face across your keyboard like a warrior/thief..

You’re right, you can stay right where you are and bash your face on the keyboard, no melee range needed
