… how’s my favorite prof in PvP these days? Haven’t played in a while, a few sessions here and there, wondering how we fit into the current meta and such.
your kidding!! what about engi?? perma swiftness and vigor, burning traite in adept immune to condis at 25% hp res yourself curing all conditions spirit rangers using res and ai to win games broken internal cd for spirits. its time to nerf everything thats over powered not just the classes the developers dont like
Oh, you mean those things that have existed since the game launched? Yeah, it’s OP now though.
A simple fix would be a passive like WoW does for demo locks, where minions (in this case, turrets) take reduced damage from AoE abilities. A counter to a turret engineer would still be single target bursting of it down, but you would no longer waste a utility slot because of AoE spam gameplay.
That wouldn’t fix anything, World of Warcraft didn’t had any AoE target limitation, putting high AoE damage resistance would make those BROKEN in any context. people would just pack them all together to completely avoid AoE damage while staying near of them. Just look at champions online when they added 75% AoE resistance + Health Regen to every pet abilities, people would just stay in the Blast effect of any Cosmic ennemies without even blocking and take 0 dmg because pets would soak everything up because of the 10 targets limitation on the Boss AoEs.
There are other ways around.
A possible solution could be to give your turrets active defenses with some sort of traits. You could give a temporary Protection buff or Aegis Buff, or even Invulnerability whenever they get hit by AoE damage and give it priority before the actual damage is done.
For instance : Blast Shield : Reduce the damage done to your turrets by 30% and whenever one of your turrets get hit by an AoE it reactively becomes Invulnerable for 5sec (Cooldown 25sec).
Another solution that could be included would be to fuse Autotool Instalation with Powerwrench. Increase the frequency to 4% every 3sec and double that amount (8% every 3sec) whenever your Wrench is equiped. Allowing a greater synergy between turrets and the wrench. Because right now, lets be honest going melee to swack down your turret only makes it bad because they take cleaves and AoE damage from ennemies whenever you are the one targeted.
Another and very easy solution would be to reduce their current hitbox. Right now it is enourmous, so big they will sometimes get cleaved in the back of an ennemy or get affected by AoEs even when they stand out of the red notification circles.
There are a lots of ways to improve turrets, but passive damage reduction to AoE is not one of them.
Eesh, just a suggestion. Settle down, hotshot.

Some of the targeting changes we’re trying should help alleviate selection of stacked targets. Right now there’s so much overlap that even if you clicked perfectly on someone’s model, it could select a minion instead.
Pretty much this. An option to click on the name of someone and have them be targeted would also be useful.
Hi, I’m Pikachoops, and I approve of the current state of mesmers.
The game’s been out for a while now, I’d like to be able to pull a target without thinking “please land at my feet.” The random pulls that result in a bounce 50 feet in the air, or even better, not even close to where I am at all, is insanely infuriating.
I’ve been playing Engineer about 99% of the time since pre-release and have played a variety of builds. I hate to lose (who doesn’t), but as long as we’re getting better and having fun, then who cares? I don’t rage (not in mic anyway), I consider myself pretty laid back, and my jokes are occasionally funny. Hit me up on here or in game if interested please and thank you
I don’t think we need DR to be honest. I’ve run weapon/utility glass cannon builds that rely entirely on the CC I bring. I sacrificed a bunch to get that CC, why should it DR? Same could be said about warriors and necros, as some necro builds I’ve run into are all about fears. Yeah it sucks to get stuck in a chain, but you learn from it and hopefully play better against it next time.
Lately I’ve been having more fun playing my newly made Warrior than my Engineer I’ve played since pre-release, therefore Warrior is OP.
This game really is something else. I left for a few months due to the insane burst damage possible from some classes. Came back last week and was immediately blown away at how condi spam is now the cool thing. Games heavily populated by Engis and Necros, which when I left before were the least played profs. Not sure how many people they have on the PvP team or how long it will take them to realize they need some sort of a public test realm, but it just seems they can’t get it right. Time for another break, I guess. Maybe when I come back it’ll be a purely retaliation meta where everyone is too afraid to attack people at all, lest they get blown up by their own skills, because honestly at this point, I wouldn’t be surprised lol
This was great lol
Are you the ele where the fight went on wayyyy too long? lol. I kittened around with necro and mesmer a bit, but I play my engi 98% of the time, so I’m not too sure I’d be any good at anything else lol. Good luck with your team dude!
Heyyo, I’ve been playing Engineer since pre-release, used to do tourneys with a few different teams, then I took a few months off from this game. Anyways, been back almost a week and now I’m looking for a team to run tourneys. Hit me up in game or in a PM here, thanks for reading!

I’d like to add that Chaithh’s idea of Enhanced Performance and Sigil of Battle + Minor Corruption, with Might duration runes lets you obtain around 1.5k Condition Damage at 12~15 permanent might stacks, in s/tPvP. That frees up your heal (turret) and 1 utility slot for FT/Toolkit etc. You also blow people up incredibly fast and gain the ability to run away/spike heal better. I’d really encourage a look through his ideas… it’s a refreshing take on the HGH concept.
What build is this?
Search Twitch and Chaithh on Google. He posts his build ideas there. You can also watch his stream.
Ah, didn’t know he switched his build. Been away for a few months lol. Thanks!

A pull would be fine too – so, scorpion wire. But since you aren’t probably dealing condition damage as a thief – so he needs a direct intervent by your part to be downed – you may simply stop attacking and wait a few seconds so that the tossed elixir is depleted.
And you don’t even need a skill to do so.So just don’t attack which results in the elixir being an invul for several seconds? Oh and yeah because scorpion wire is such a viable skill and a must have for every thief build…
Yeah, using skills situationally is too much work for me too.
btw do you think thakittens coincidence that engineers won in the recent 1on1 tournaments in EU and NA? i dont.
Not sure about EU, but I recall that the NA 1v1 winner was running a turret build, nerf turrets too, amirite?
Rifle roaming has become much more viable with the patch to Jump Shot, change in Sitting Duck trait, addition of Modified Ammunition, and Rocket Boots…dear lord Rocket boots.
I’ve been doing sPvP with Rifle and all gadgets, and it’s some of the most fun I’ve had in quite some time. I’m glassy as hell, but as long as I keep cc up and time my dodges well, I can shell out the big damage.
Anyways, I just came back from “that other MMO” where I play a demonology warlock, where basically you need to keep your pets alive for ideal damage. You get a passive that makes your demons take like 90% less damage from AoE attacks and I can’t help but feel like this would work well as either a chosen trait or a passive in the turret tree. That way someone that wants to kitten a turret engi can still single target dps them down at the disadvantage of letting you engage them freely, but at the same time they can’t just AoE your turrets into the ground with no drawbacks. Just my 2 cents.
Been playing Engineer since pre-release, played pretty heavily up until a few months ago and I just came back to find all the people I used to do tourneys with gone. Just kind of looking for people to PvP with hotjoin, tourneys, etc, hit me up in game pls
^ well said. Anything’s OP if you just sit in the area of where all the damage is happening.
Ok lets assume that you move off point and lose it.You still have to kill him while he applies burning from range through the trait and ft toolbelt skill.Thats like 20 points worth of it and you cant do anything and he can pretty much disengage at will..Chaining blast finishers into smoke bomb is not rocket science..
I just tell what i see ..atm there arent other viable builds with that much utility and that much options. If he loses against a class its pretty much l2p issue for him in my book unless he faces good necro or builds that nobody uses atm(cause they generally suck). And also that 1vs1 advantage comes with good support with rezz,cc,aoe cond pressure, combo healing ,team stealthing..
We just come to the situation that the better option for your team so that it can negate what that engi is doing and also not lose a lot in every other area is ..to bring an engi too.Just like it was with eles for so long .
Super’s team is the only one managed to beat TP with a good ratio and they use an engi mirroring what teldo does or staying at close just to 1vs1 him. Most top teams already use an engi of that kind and the rest are probably looking for one!
We ll see how it shapes up in the future:P
Teldo’s build has no stun break, so cc’ing it into the ground is an option. Also, the self rez rarely gets brought, due to it’s main skill no longer being a stun break. As for ‘chaining blast finishers’, yeah it’s totally worth it to just put a bunch of abilities on CD for some stealth, right? There are definitely ways to beat bomb engis. You can’t really go to Teldo as a prime example of how bomb engis are broken, as he’s obviously a great player and the exception not the rule. I would recommend you read Ostrich’s post again as he explained in quite good detail answers to some of the things you mentioned.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/tPvP-Build-List-X-Post-r-guildwars2
is a good place to start, as it has a few different builds. Engineer forums are, of course, a great place to scope out, as people come up with fun builds all the time (CeiMash’s rifle/gadget build was one I found in here the other day that was wicked fun). Other than that, I’d recommend a few twitch streams worth watching that often include builds. A few of my favorites to watch and learn from are;
www.twitch.tv/teldoo
www.twitch.tv/chaithh
www.twitch.tv/ostricheggs
Good luck and happy hunting!
^ well said. Anything’s OP if you just sit in the area of where all the damage is happening.
thanks for providing video evidence of the first time an engi’s ever said “thank god for my downstate”
We know. We’ve known for a while.
99.9percent of engies’ kills from suicides.
Rocket Boots has killed me just as often as other players have.
Ex. I get immobilized, I use Rocket Boots like I always do to get out, I realize that the initial jump may not take me over the edge, but that roll afterwards definitely will, I’m treated to a whisper of ‘LOL’ from whoever initially attacked me and then I carry on with my day.
I played a season of competitive PvP in the MMO that shall not be named. Had good times but ultimately got bored. Looking forward to screwing around with Engi again, especially now that a bomb/gadget build is doable with Rocket Boots no longer stunning you and Slick Shoes having a stunbreak to it. See you guys in game!
…and I was not disappointed. This new map is an Engi’s paradise, with all the places you can knock people off and all the ways our exceptional mobility can be used. I may be sticking around for a while
Pretty much anyone with a knockback can make this map work for them. I’ve seen mesmers dominate with GS5 as well. IMO this map is built for high mobility classes. SB thieves have a lot of ways to get a great angle on you for their attacks, and of course Engis with rocket boots and a well placed BOB or overcharge are sure to do well. I see your point though, I feel bad for warriors on this one
You know, there’s a thread in the necro forum asking how conditionmancers should deal with classes that have heavy condition cleanses. The response is basically “layer up conditions during fear, or die”.
The fact is that the game isn’t balanced around 1 vs 1. There will always be a class who is best at 1 vs 1. Whether it is the Thief who pops in and out of stealth and resets fights indefinitely when they don’t burst you down. The mesmer, who is nigh impossible to damage while interrupting and bursting you down. The necromancer, who has statistical bulk and high damaging stuns + conditions to wear you down. The engineer, who can kite you endlessly while laying down high direct + condition damage with grenades. The guardian, who’s cleansing and protection uptime make them impossible to kill. The ranger, who solos you with the pet while dodging and evading everything you throw at them.
I’ve heard it all, trust me. The only class I’ve never heard as being “overpowered” is the elementalist. Even though warriors suck now, there was a time when they were top tier due to bulls rush + frenzy + 100 blades killing people instantly.
You must be somewhat new then. A few months back the indestructible ele was generating tears for days.
I came back to this game to try out this map and I’ll be sticking around for a bit because of it. Rocket Boots + Skyhammer = most fun I’ve had in this game in a while.
two issues holding back e-sport?
1. ANet doesn’t care about PvP.
2. Not many people care about this game.
Just came back to the game after a few months and this was the first new build I tried. It’s wicked fun and surprisingly survivable. Thanks a bunch!
That was months ago. What changed between now and then that made it OP? This is a genuine question, I haven’t been around.
There have been no buffs during the last 3 months if that is what you are wondering. Actually, last major patch nerfed elixir S and incendiary powder trait, and implimented some boon-hate traits and skills in other classes. (If you gear everything toward getting 20+ stacks of might there is nothing to do against a S/D thief but cry)
So its a little worse than 3 months ago. But it’s still a great build and it has gained popularity. That’s really all there was to it; people just became more aware of it.
ah ok, thanks. The ol’ 100 nades syndrome all over again. There will be crying followed by a nerf, I’m sure.
Also, I’ve been using the HGH trait for quite a while now with FT. Is this also OP?
Step away from the game for 3 months and lo and behold, what is this? jportell lamenting the plight of mesmers and crying OP at a viable engi build. man, some things never change. Before I left HGH condi was something that I barely knew about, and only then because I ran into ostrich in a free tourny, and he wiped the floor with my 100 nade spec(RIP). That was months ago. What changed between now and then that made it OP? This is a genuine question, I haven’t been around.
lol HGH is OP? Man, funny how things change when you step away from the game for a few months. Not sure how this is running currently, but I’d like to point out that like 99% of engineer specs, you need to dedicate your traits exclusively to being good at stacking might.
I just came back to the game after months, and apparently much has changed. 100 nades was pretty much the go to tourny build when I left and HGH Condi was just starting to get some use, and now 100 nades has been busted and HGH is getting called the most OP thing ever. Engineers getting called OP. My my my, how things change lol. Anyways, I was wondering what some good builds are for s/tPvP these days. Any insight would sure be appreciated, thanks!
Thanks a lot man! Hope you’re enjoying the prof! And google brings up an excellent point that I forgot to mention. If I see another Engi, I will kind of test him out to see what his skill level is. Just like chess, “The only way to get smarter is by playing a smarter opponent.” You can learn a lot about your own playing by playing someone better. Ended up playing Ostrich Eggs in a free last night, who was able to remind me that I have a long way to go lol
It’s my firm belief that our beloved profession is the hardest to play. As a few have pointed out, we have to press multiple keys to do what another class can do with 1. But I see a lot of you guys consistently post on the Engi forums, which leads me to believe that you’re all in the same mindset I am. Do we have to play near perfect to down some other professions/builds? Absolutely. Some of our builds leave little room for error, but for me, that’s part of the appeal of the prof. I like running through multiple kits, and multiple skills to set up a kill, as opposed to spam clones/shatter or steal/CnD/BS. It’s just infinitely more satisfying to me. Even our supposedly ‘cake’ 100 nades build (which anyone who’s played it in higher rank tPvP will tell is not always an easy task) turns every fight into a little game of chess. Poking and prodding with my rifle, setting up fake immobilizes to get them to dodge or blow a stun breaker until I get the perfect time to catch them with the nade combo is just so friggin satisfying! I’ve played all the profs, tourney’d with the majority of them, there’s nothing like engineer. Those of us who’ve been here since the beginning haven’t been here because it’s OP or perfect for all situations all of the time. We’re still here because there’s nothing else that compares to how fun it is. Maybe one of these days the rest of the community will catch on to what they’re missing
It sucks that you’ve run into this, and though it’s happened a few times to me, I haven’t really had it happen to the severity that you’ve explained here. Maybe other Engis go out of their way to focus me, but I figure that everyone’s going out of their way to focus me, as I run 100 nades mostly, and from someone that used to make a b-line for that thief that killed me in 2 seconds, getting downed in 2 seconds leaves a sour taste in your mouth, so revenge is only natural lol. Could also be that the recent influx of many new engis is an affront to some engis that have been playing it since launch. Another engi I’ve known for a while seems to have a huge problem with engis becoming more popular. Definitely unique snowflake syndrome there. Me? I think it’s great. I’ve had a few new engis whisper me in hotjoin games commenting on my paid/high rank armor and asking for tips since the armor is usually a good tip that I’ve been around the block a few times. I’ll talk shop with anyone, because who doesn’t want our favorite profession to have a larger/stronger community? More people playing = more people coming up with cool new builds, playstyles, etc. To go out of your way to prove yourself as the OG Engi in sPvP is just ridiculous though. I would rather this type of behavior stays with the thieves and mesmers, as their map chat never ceases to amuse lol
Not so fun seeing that HGH condi build demonstrated on you lol
jimmy, why oh why did you have to post this. guess what every ele I run into in hotjoin is running now? there’s nothing quite as fun as ‘wait til the ele is done throwing us all of the point then kill him’ lol
I played a tourny yesterday where an Engi was running the enemy’s treb. Since I was running P/P Condi, killing treb from the courtyard wall with nades would take too long, I needed to stop it now. I rushed up there and the engi had all turrets. I spent the entire time cc’d or immobilized. We had our GS War go up there to try it next time, he met the same fate. I don’t know who this was (and believe me, I wish I knew so I could try to coerce him to tell me his secrets), but he was defending treb like a boss. We couldn’t touch him. I meant to post this in the forums, that someone is using a beast turret build and he must share the precious with us lol. I thought turrets were absolutely useless until yesterday. Dude was a great player with a great set up. If you’re reading this, kudos to you, sir.
And Ele’s STILL have the best downed state in the game by far. If you can’t see that then I don’t think it is possible to have a rational discussion with you.
outside of vapor form, it’s the WORST downed state in the game.
“Outside of the best downed state skill in the game, it’s the worst downed state in the game.”
Makes sense.
I think that is actually ranger down #3, especially in water.
let me know when YOUR downed state heals you faster than DPS from two to three people.
Ele downstate has won a few matches for teams I’ve played against in tourneys. The ability to remove your body from AoE fields to run behind your team to get rezzed is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly. I’m not saying that ranger down 3 isn’t great, I just think you’re downplaying how good yours is.
I’ve been using your HGH condi build in tournys and it’s worked out pretty well for me. I consider myself a pretty good engi player but a terrible build creator. Just wanted to say thanks for sharing these, dude
I love my overly complicated profession lol
Yea me too. When playing thief I just steamroll over people. But it’s not as fun as twacking or “prybaring some one in tha face”.
But I’ll have to agree though, we’re not all that good.
Sure I can kill people in WvW and win an 3v1 battle with tankCAT, but I need to put in much and mich more effort in it then with my thief. A good thief can easily frustrate the kitten out of a complete party.
Engineer can not.
Very true, but I’ll say this much. I never feel a sense of accomplishment from a kill like I have with my engineer. My fingers ache from all the button presses, my mind is scrambled from trying to think so fast and throw together all the combos, but at the end of it all, I mutter under my breath “I earned that kitten”. lol
I’ve tried Elementalist and Mesmer for a few hours at a time. I do quite well on them and find myself thinking often “how can they allow one build to be able to do all this?” lol. It never lasts long though, sure those 2 professions have much more success with less work than my Engi does, but I can’t stop playing Engi, no matter how mad I get sometimes. I love my overly complicated profession lol
Everyone’s seen the ridiculous underwater rez that rangers have Harry. It’s not just a fluke that OP experienced.
