I would play a mesmer but I feel dirty afterwards. It’s like taking candy from a baby. Same with the guardian and thief. It just makes me ashamed of myself. LOL

LOL, I understand this all too well. I played a Mes before I played Engi during pre-release. For a while I bounced between both, but felt like the potential for the Engi was infinitely higher due to our ‘versatility.’ Now when I play the Mes for even a half hour I get the same feeling when I used to use the Game Genie on NES. Yeah, I’m more successful but it feels so, so wrong, lol

20 points into explosives for 3 stacks of might on heal, the sigil that gives might on weapon swap (or crit would stack faster I suppose, and take less microing.. but you’ll be doing it anyway so whatever), 2 runes of altruism, 2 runes of might, 2 runes of hoelbrak, 30 points into alchemy. I’m not mentioning juggernaut ‘cause it’s garbage. Maybe use Elixir B for 4-5 more stacks of might (3 from chugging with HGH if you choose to take it, 1-2 from the toss).

Juggernaut is useful for sPvP, as it allows me to maintain at least 10 stacks of might to start off a fight and on the way to a node.

combined with 2x hoelbrak, 2x fire, 2x strength runes i have 10 stacks of might permanently with flamethrower out. i can reach 25 stacks without any help by spamming elixirs. i’m using a mix of soldier and berserker armor with berserker weapons and accessories. sigil of blood and omnomberry pie makes me extremely tanky.

Hehe, we pretty much use the same build, except for 2 different trait choices and an elixir. You don’t find yourself vulnerable without a stun breaker? This is like a more offensive version of mine, curious how it plays!

If you’re quick enough you can: overcharge shot ->grenade barrage -> jump shot.

You’re better off running to your target, hitting jump shot in melee (for both takeoff and landing damage), blunderbuss, and THEN overcharge shot to get out of dodge.

I do this all the time. Usually Blunderbuss first, then Net Shot to keep them there for the Jump Shot take off and landing, then the OC shot. Works like a charm.

I was also looking into possibilities to stack some might but since I dislike most elixiers and kind of love SD and found toolbelt elixier skills have (in my opinion) too long CD to use them with SD I came up with this:
I use superior sigil of strength and Enhanced Performance with Might Duration Rune (and maybe soon 2x rune of altruism)
It´s a lazy way of stacking might, sicne you only have to switch to medkit every 10 seconds.
I still have to try this with Juggernaut… :o

It’s a complete fight changer as is. I don’t consider it any more difficult to get off than any other skill with a cast time, and the rewards for doing so are quite good. I think a few of us have mesmer alts and I doubt very much that anyone else that used moa said to themselves “I feel like there’s something wrong with this skill… I didn’t get enough reward for the risk I just had casting it.” We are looking it in scope of the full game. As far as I can tell, Time Warp has always been the best choice for tournament play due to 10 second CC on one enemy is not as as valuable as 10 seconds of quickness for you and every ally in the the area, and I don’t think it ever will be. To make Moa a more attractive choice the only option is to nerf Time Warp, IMO.

I’m not going to lie, I have absolutely zero experience with PvE above level 59, because that is legitimately as far as I made it, lol. So hopefully one of the more experienced PvE engi’s can hop in and put in their 2 cents. Off the top of my head, I’m not sure how bad PvE conditions get, but my first thing to go would probably be switching out Formula 409 with Self Regulating Defenses, which I wish I could squeeze into my build so bad, but unfortunately just can’t bring myself to do. Maybe even switch out the FT skills CD trait to something else as well, as the only reason I started using it was the shortened knockback and blind was infinitely useful to me in node capping. I apologize again for my lack of PvE experience, but I’ve been playing since pre-release and spent all my time in the Mists tweaking different builds instead of getting my poor Asura Engi through the ranks in the Priory. The world is doomed by a dragon because I’m too busy fighting other people

I’ve been having success in sPvP with a might stacking/FT/Rifle build. Enough CC that I can keep an enemy off point and cap it, enough damage to be able to 1v1 just about anyone (besides well played mesmers) and my survivability is good enough that I can usually 2v1 people at least for a while. The options are out there, you just need to find them, and the best place to look is often right here in our forums. Ayden’s build that he posted was quite fun for a while for me, and there’s Vöz and Hiba who post builds/advice, as well as Optics on youtube, though you don’t hear as much from him anymore. We’ll do it on our own, like we’ve always done

LOL thanks, I needed the laugh. 10 sec of being locked out of your skills apparently isn’t enough, so you would prefer that we not have an option to gtfo? I think if you look at your elite compared to many other classes elites, you’ll realize you’re doing just fine. Could always be much worse.

Engineer (I’ve played just about any build I come across either on forums or youtube, so I’m pretty versatile), Mesmer (it’s easily been over a month and a half since I really did anything with my mes, but I used to play Taugrim’s “Legion” build and did pretty well with it)
Looking for other people to attempt tournaments with or even a guild on Anvil Rock, as I was on Sorrow’s Furnace but all my friends bailed on the game, so I googled ‘gw2 best pvp server’, it said Anvil Rock, and I figured I’d try to make some new friends there Now that I’m done with that wall of text, hit me up IG or send me mail or something. I get bored a lot lol
TL;DR I’m a better than average Engi that knows his kitten and is trying to get to that next level as far as teamwork and skill with my class. TY for reading

Disclaimer; this is entirely from an sPvP standpoint
I use might stacking most out of any other build, IMO using FT combined with the rifle allows you to pull off very solid damage.

At any given moment, assuming I’m consistently switching between FT and Rifle and using my elixirs, both for their own usage and to remove conditions (usually use the toolbelt skills for that) I average around 20 stacks of might or so, but it fluctuates due to the random nature of combat. IMO power. It would synergize better with what you’ve already got going between your bombs, mines and grenades, all explosive weapons and all benefiting from power.

So I should not get condition damage at all ( just increasing power and other stats ) or should I be a hybrid ?

In my experience increasing condition length is always preferable, which is what happens when you stack power, plus like I mentioned before, you have a bunch of stuff that goes boom, all of it getting better damage because of power. So in my opinion, yes, straight power.

I think it’s fine the way it is. It has a pretty obvious circle showing where you threw it and your body can still be knocked out of it. Or just out damage the heal, it only lasts 6 seconds I believe and it takes 2 pulses (2 seconds I believe) to rez you. No more OP than a warrior’s traited vengeance or that one that the mesmer has (forget what it’s called).

Run through a team mates speed buff, throw grenade at escaping thief/any class, add throw time, add hang time, add Australian ping = grenade range 300-500. I’m sure when they add weapon stats to kits we will be given a new skill.

Catchers mitt, for catching ones own grenades. But don’t worry they won’t do enough damage to kill you.

Grenade damage reduced 30% to compensate for mitt.

First of all, I’ll summarize what I meant again:
1) don’t compare class mechanics as a standalone aspect & don’t compare utilities as a standalone aspect; classes are balanced as a whole, not per category. When comparing, you have to compare traits, damage, usefulness, combinations, …
2) there ’s much more difference than sheer skill numbers
3) compared to kits, warrior banners are weak as weapons

Secondly,
If we had a kit on F1 and a kit on F2 (I assume it would be from a drop-down list and not stuck with default ones?, which would btw be a real hassle to do and is never going to happen), IF, then we would become OP compared to other professions.
2 kits + 3 utilities is insanely OP. They would have to balance the whole class again and do that so hard it would get a different playstyle altogether because of all the possible new combinations. Then a whole new kittenstorm of unhappy engineers would start. It’s not providing a solution, it’s creating a new problem.

-Clip (few, almost forgot to put my name at the end, would you have known it was me otherwise? :p)

put a CD on kit usage, then it’s not so OP at all. what about 3 kits + 3 utilities? Sounds insanely OP right? That’s pretty much an Elementalist. But we can switch to kits whenever we want! Yes, I know, but for the most part, you switch to kits to use whichever of those skills you need at that moment, then you switch back to your weapon, another kit, pretty much giving yourself a CD even when you don’t have one. I do fine with my engi just like a lot of you do, but do I feel sub-par from the get go? Yeah, I do. I don’t appreciate being the queen of versatility, getting gimped damage for having ‘versatility’ when I see an equally, if not more versatile class out damaging me, having more survivability, more group buffs, etc. The cornerstone of this class was supposed to be turrets and gadgets from what I gathered from this site before the game launched, both of which are borderline useless or have a role in an extremely niche build. I feel like all the things that are supposed to be trademarks of this class aren’t worth an elementalist’s fart, and it’s frustrating. I’ll stick it out because it is fun, but I’m not going to lie, I play my mesmer and think “so this is what a complete class feels like.” Of course, they could always delete Engineer and really kitten off me and the other 43 people that play it, which seems like how it’s going.

One of my favorite tricks on Foefire is laying down a rifle turret near one of the doors, then running off to continue fighting. Their entire team gets that “your base is under attack” message constantly and a lot of newer teams get pretty kitten when they zerg to the gate to find a single little pop turret just pecking away by itself while we cap the other nodes.

The ability to customize your toolbelt loadout is an amazing idea and one I heavily support, but one problem sticks out. Toss Elixir R. Currently, this is tied to a sub par stun break, and though the couple of extra dodges are nice, I personally have only ever equipped Elixir R for it’s toolbelt skill, specifically for a self rez. I believe the stun break is so sub par for balance reasons, sure you can rez teammates or self rez, but you’re giving up a utility spot to do it, for the most part. Customizable toolbelts would make this something that I would see pretty much every Engi bringing along, even with it’s 2 minute CD, which of course, will lead to the masses shouting that Engis are OP, etc. To be honest, I’m not sure how I would fix this problem. Figured I’d shove in my 2 cents, but all around, there’s some great ideas in here! Say what you want about where engi is currently in balance, but besides the whining (which I myself have been guilty of a few times), I truly believe that Engineer has the best profession community in the game. For real though, it would be nice to see turrets get some much needed love. I know when I first rolled my engi, it was the idea of turrets that drew me to the class. As far encouraging lazy gameplay, the trick is to make them viable without being too powerful. In my mind the player skill associated with turrets would be optimal placement and regular repairing with tool kit, similar to how it is in TF2, for instance. Sorry to get off subject OP, the answer is besides a very, very small percentage of niche builds, turrets are a mistake to bring with you.

I think the problem with turrets is that if they are powerful, they encourage lazy gameplay where you simply place the turrets and forget they are there. If they are weak, then no one uses them.

Solution: Make turrets more powerful, but make them require you to be more active. Maybe even control WHEN the turrets fire.

Popping something you don’t directly control but does damage for you is lazy gameplay? Don’t tell mesmers that, OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH

my problem is they went against their design for combat, saying that no class should have any issues with combat and then nerfing this class so that we indeed do have serious issues with pve combat especially 1v1 is just crazy.

If you mean it’s not viable to endlessly spam grenade 1 in PvE and win maybe… But that’s entry point skill level. Worse than most new players. Simply add dodge and that strat becomes totally fine for most 1v1 PvE…

You do realize that the whole point of ranged is that they die long before they reach you right? Saying it shouldn’t happen because it doesn’t fit YOUR view of combat still doesn’t make it right when warriors with guns and rangers and indeed thieves with bows enjoy that kind of combat easily to the point that most players don’t bother with melee because it is that much easier. So yes even tho I wasn’t one of those concentrating on grenades as the ONLY nerf they brought to the table yes grenades should be just as easy on my engineer as shooting a short bow on my ranger. When it’s not that easily done, that’s called imbalance.

If you died to a nade engineer spamming 1 then someone removed the movement keys from your keyboard. I had thought that the nade damage was as high as it was because you needed to manually target where they went, you know, risk of missing (which happened often) justified by reward of hitting with those bad boys. Easy to sit back and spam nades unattended? Yes. Easy to do with a thief all up in yo’ grill? Not so much.

2vs1 is utter disasterimo and all because of downed system. Few days ago i logged in with my ranger for some pvp ( free tournament if i remember correctly).I go to a point and there is a engineer with half hp.I go into fight with him then his ranger buddy shows up.I down engineer and damage him from time to time to stop him from rezing while i fight ranger.I down a ranger too at this point my health is very low, then engineer pulls me in and does that explosion thing and i go down too.Next thing i know engineer is on his feet?!? and i get stomped.So i win a fight 1vs2 fair and square then i get defeated because of a crappy game mechanic, i know there are people out there who can understand how frustrating that is.Logged out, haven’t played since. I remember when i was playing Warhammer online with my marauder,winning a fight 1 vs 2 in or against a higher level player was so much fun and exciting and so exhilarating and satisfying, you earned that victory and it was yours.That is probably the feeling i miss the most when i pvp in GW 2.

Very understandable. This is what makes 2v1’s extremely frustrating and difficult to pull off. I main engi, so if I down 1 of them, I usually begin stomp animation and then pop Elixir S. If it’s on CD, then I get the exact situation you just described. Sadly, if you don’t have some sort of invulnerability, stealth, or stability combined with enough health to eat the damage the remaining person is throwing at you then 2v1’s range closer to the impossible side unless you’re built somewhat tanky. The best you can hope for usually is to hold off a point until help arrives.

I don’t WvWvW much, but as far as sPvP goes, in a 2v1 situation I usually go after the one I think I can drop the quickest. Sometimes you have to play the target switching game to figure out what builds each one is using, but using your example, I would go after the thief first, if the thief stealths, hack away at the guardian until the thief comes back. As far as what comes to mind, defensive options and positioning. Are my defensive utilities/healing skills/etc off CD. Obviously WvWvW will be different, because it’s not all about ‘hold the node’ like it is in sPvP. In a 2v1 in sPvP my goal is to contest the node and stay alive doing it, hence positioning. Hope this helped.

I would like a kit that can be used when I’m not the only Engi in hotjoin sPvP. I call it the “No kittenin Way” kit. Automatically equips when within range of another engineer. Once equipped, the skills would be as follows;
Skill 1- Puts a party hat on anyone within 1500 range
Skill 2- Lays out a delicious cake
Skill 3- Pours out some refreshing punch for everyone to indulge in
Skill 4- Gives the other engineer a gift. Opening the gift applies the engineer with a buff that guarantees the next 3 flamethrower attacks will not ‘missmissmissmissmiss’ or be ‘obstructed’
Skill 5- Creates 3 turrets that automatically fly towards the closest opponent and blow up for roughly 80% of the enemy’s health. It’s a rare occurrence that 2 engineers be in the same hotjoin match at the same time, so let’s celebrate by letting you feel like the 7 mesmers that are currently in the match, if only for a minute.

Any input on this idea would be greatly appreciated!

Thoughts on Heavy Armor, Hammer?

I wish we did have Heavy armor.

I like the idea of “I built my armor” which I know is easily possible given the crafting system in GW2. But I never feel like it’s the Engineer’s idea armor. Here they are, working with guns and mines, rockets, turrets… All this “heavy” feeling gear… And they’re doing this all in leather… Which is soft, and coat-y.

It’s like saying… “I’m going to make 3/4 of my arsenal out of metal! But that jacket over there is adorable! I’m so buying that!”

I lol’d hard at the last sentence. I agree, heavy armor, as far as looks go, would suit the class far more. I was playing the original Borderlands last night and the Crimson Lance Engineers are decked out in plate armor with goggle type lenses, and I couldn’t help but picture my tiny little Asura engi all beefed up and kitten looking. Do want, but only if we can actually get some armor sets tailored for us aesthetically. No more pirate hats, no more bandit/rogue get ups, some sort of armor sets that scream ‘engineer.’ As far as the hammer idea goes, like Kimbald said (seem to be agreeing with Kimbald a lot in forums today, lol), that’s one more weapon that we have that forces us into a close quarters role when I think that everyone agrees that we could use some long range lovin’. Sniper kits were brought up before, and I hope it happens someday, though I would definitely love to see what a hammer could bring to the table.

Or better: actually give us the versatility that seems to warrant this low damage penalty.
We don’t have it now… or traits only support single purpose builds, never a true versatile build.

So if we pay the price for it, I would really like to have the actual versatility now, if you dev’s don’t mind…

I posted this initially because I wanted to hear what other engis were doing to keep playing, stave off the frustration that a quick look at this forum will show that quite a few people feel. Looking for other peoples input, that’s it. Somehow this got labeled as a QQ post when I intended it to be anything but, and then somehow it ended up being people are doing amazing things with the engineer, sometimes you just have to move on and also included some amazing insight into your inability to talk to women. Yeah. Stayed right on topic. So, I’ve gathered from this post that the best thing for me to stave off frustration with engineer is to avoid the engineer forums. Thanks for the help.

i find myself reading alot more people getting on the l2p ban wagon with engineers, straight up we all have our issues with the engineer but at the end of the day some of us are doing great things with the engineer and that’s not a matter of the engineer class its self but the skilled players who are really getting the most out of the class.

I’m not trying to be a dick when i say this but sometimes you just gotta accept u cant do it and move on, hell i wish i was great a picking up women but sadly I’m not, so at the end of the day when a better player says learn to play go get better, it doesn’t matter what you read on these forums you gotta put the work into the engineer to find a build that your gonna be pro at.

the amount of failing tank cats i see compared to actual individualistic builds is kitten (no offense tankcat build, its a great build that i find fun to use now and then), so engineers that complain to much about the class yes you need to learn to play, i’m sick of hearing how kitten it is and how every other class does what we do but better, we are not every other class, start comparing yourself to other players before you start raging on the class.

I love that in response to my thread I’m getting l2p and move the kitten on. I stated how I felt, asked if anyone else felt that way and if so, what they were doing instead of getting frustrated. That’s it. I didn’t go on a long rant about how gimped we are, I expressly stated that I love the class and it’s playstyle. Elitist kittens for the win. Any cool builds you guys are trying out, any tips for getting more enjoyment out of this class etc would be welcome. If you’re here to tell me I probably just suck or re-roll, get the kitten out, because that’s not what the thread was about at all.

I’ve played around 900 matches on my Engi, after initially rolling a Guardian and playing up to around 600 matches. Never looked back so far, and I’ve found in PvP we are quite good and have more variety of builds available to use than most professions, despite a lot of posts on these boards.

The main problem is that everyone wants to just kill things quickly, and we don’t do that quickly without sacrificing a lot.

I also have great success in PvP with my engineer. However, this statement feels like an oversimplification, given the huge popularity of bunker guardians. They don’t kill things quickly either, and yet they are extremely popular and effective.

I think, perhaps, it’s a mix of several things: 1, the issue you describe; 2, engineers have a high skill floor; 3, engineers have a higher-than-average number of bugs; 4, engineers have a couple of real holes/viability problems with their skill sets/mechanic.

I appreciate that you’re not berating other engineers for not being good enough, like some other engineer players seem to enjoy doing. I also agree that engineers aren’t as bad as everyone thinks. But maybe we shouldn’t dismiss everyone’s troubles so simply?

My intent isn’t to sound dismissive. On the contrary, I’ve posted several builds posts here, and I give in game advice quite often when other Engie players ask.

But those posts? Yeah, they scroll off the first page within a day, where the complaint posts stack up dozens of posts of people chiming in on things we supposedly can’t do. I don’t understand what happened in gaming where if something is a challenge to do, ‘why bother trying’ seems to be the mentality. That’s the part of me that probably starts to shine through and sound a bit dismissive, but it truthfully does come out of a mentality of wanting to help other Engineers and show them what we’re capable of, but it feels like there isn’t any interest in that, because it’s hard.

I apologize if my post annoys you. I’ve only played Engineer since launch, and have resisted playing other classes even though they are in a much better place than us, and I stick with it because I enjoy the playstyle. I’m Glory Rank 35, which I got 98% of playing as an Engineer. It’s not that it’s challenging that makes me not enjoy it. It’s that I can’t get spots on tournament teams without being a bunker (and even then, not all the time) because other classes do what I do better. I posted twice on the forums today. You swooped into my post in sPvP to tell me to l2p, and now you’re doing it again here. I suppose I’m not the monster Engi player that you are, but I assure you it isn’t from lack of trying. I merely voiced my frustration and asked other Engis what they were doing, as it’s widely regarded that despite what you say, we’re not fine. I posted this to get some suggestions on what everyone else is doing to alleviate the frustration. I did NOT post this so it could be inferred that my problem with the class is it’s too difficult and I suck. You’re not coming off as helpful, you’re coming off as extremely condescending. So again, I apologize for posting one of ‘those’ types of threads. I’m sure your day is much worse because of it.

I’m not talking about your regular bow Ranger Mc Quickness… Rangers with greatswords / sword-torch should worry people, yet they don’t, makes me curious.

Definitely. Got destroyed by one of those all match yesterday. Don’t see many of these rangers, so it could be a bit of ‘holy crap they’re powerful’ and a bit of ‘I don’t see this ever, so I have no idea what I’m doing’ lol

@Choops That’s why I personally love engineers so much! We can fulfill any role in the game with a large variety of builds! Whether it be a quad kit bunker, a static discharge dps, or a grenade condi support… Engineers are just the alpha class in GW2

Agreed. I’ve had my Engi since pre-release and still haven’t dinged 80 on him, mostly because I spend all my time in the Mists. He’s the only class I play and after playing easily 10+ builds, I have no idea what my role is supposed to be. Everyone seems to have better support/direct damage/condition damage/bunker ability, so I guess I don’t see where I fit in. No bug fixes, no weapon stats on kits, and nerfed every patch. I sure can pick ’em

… to find a reason to play for more than a few minutes. At least in PvP. I’ve played other professions, and they do nothing for me. My engineer was the first character I created in pre-release and though I love the playstyle, I’m getting a little tired of hopping to different builds in hopes I can reduce the damage done by the nerfbat (which ultimately comes down to ’here’s this build that can do things this other profession can do, except not as good’, but I digress). Anyone else feel this way? I’ve been playing less and less of the game since November, just wondering what other engis are doing. Shelving the character til another patch? Rolling new toons?
