Also I guess something should be mentioned about leaning rangers to more successful power specs? right now rangers don’t have any competent power builds in anything out side of PvE. this could possibly be fixed by allowing pet stats to scale with ranger power gear or by readjusting the damage multipliers to skills and weapons that are not condition based, such as the great sword, spear, longbow, axe offhand and war horn abilities. And as everyone has previously mentioned having our utilities be more useful without heavily investing trait points to make them affect us as well as our pets or allow them to be thrown, etc.

It’s the lack of AE and burst holding back Ranger power builds.

All I can say right now is make pet stats scale with gear and make pet melee attacks have a leap function with their animation… pretty much what the one hand sword does for the ranger right now, or what the moa morph attack one does, a while back someone tested that a moa morphed pet does more melee dmg than a normal melee pet because the attacks make them leap at the moving target.

Ranger Pet Progression?

since player progression is a topic, why not pet progression? or even rare vanity pet skins that are hard to get.
I am sure many rangers would prefer something over what is currently available, such as a raptor over a cat skin, or a griffin over an eagle.

i am not saying these are things that should be flat out given, but something to work for, do a task for, or offer special rewards for completion such as adding a spawn to home instance for such a creature upon completion of an achievement.
GW1 did have an area dedicated to taming and re-taming pets that were hard to get and required special needs to get them such as the moss spider; which was a daily lottery box reward if you were lucky, you get 1 moss spider egg.

I think that having more vanity pet skins as well as hard to get skins will actually add much more depth to the individuality of a ranger than the currant status allowing for a wider variety of tastes to be fulfilled and adding another goal should rangers choose to work for if they like the skins, this is much the same as working for a weapon skin on any other profession since the pet does add to the rangers appearance greatly.

ranger zerker needs some pet love after this. This just reduces ranger hard dmg by 10% which does not pair well with the current pet dmg output. crit dmg kinda is what made it more viable for rangers to run zerker in pve, zerker ranger is still not a strong option at all in pvp.

it is not a little known fact that rangers have 0 abilities that drop conditions without some stipulation to them that can make them useless if you are too far away, your pet is dead, or if you have no endurance…
seriously why did we not get a press to clear condition heal?

we still need some traits merged it seems marks VIII and X would do a lot better if merged as well as Marks IV and IX as many other classes already have similar traits that have both effects… or they could have their traits split that would balance the game too :P… the IV and IX necromancer and thief have similar traits that have the combined effect of both. I don’t pay enough attention of other classes to see if there is more examples.

it is the only Halloween weapon skin this year that does not move/glow/ or have anything coming off it.

but I noticed that when zoning into an area for the first time it has a sound effect when you wield it for the first time and stow it, I noticed this during night time zones I zoned into I don’t know about daytime zones. but was it supposed to have an effect and did it get forgotten to be turned on or implemented or is this just a bug and it is supposed to smoke or have something coming off of it? the bow looks dull so a little something would make it much more appealing.

**edit: the sound happened during the day cycle as well, also it happens more than once, but seems to have a cooldown of some type

The main issue with Black Lion chests is that hoping to get <insert item> out of one is much like the belief that if you pay for a limitless supply of buckets filled with fresh manure, you’ll eventually stick your hands into one that somebody dropped one whole quarter into.

I mean this wouldn’t be really an issue if there was more ingame ways to get the keys or if we got more keys for less money but there is so many filler items with such a slim chance at getting the desired rare item you want it isn’t worth spending the gems on the keys, if anything starting new chars and doing the personal story for the key is the most cost rewarding method to actually open them right now.

I am bringing this up at this moment because the loot pool for black lion chests are getting to the point that they are large enough there is slim to no chance of getting what you want which diminishes the desire to purchase keys to open them and try at a desired item.

I’m throwing out an idea here, but what if we got different black lion chests available to us that had different “rare” rewards.
such as a chest specifically for the endless mystery tonics, a chest for the personal contracts, a chest for back/item skins(and the rare black lion claim tickets, blue ones can drop from any of the chest types)

this would limit the loot pools and actually encourage buying keys to work for a desired item, at this point it is so much of a crap shoot getting something you want. buying things off the trading post is probably the cheaper option.

item drop rates would need to be adjusted most likely but would encourage people to buy keys again, and just have the keys work on all box types as well as all box types can drop the basic rewards from black lion chests currently… with the exception of the money bags and un-identified dyes, those can reduced in drop rates drastically right now they are more of an annoyance and turn off from buying more keys since you can get nothing back from a chest besides just dyes and a couple silver.

hell I know I would buy more keys if I knew I had a better shot than I would currently at getting the never ending mysterious tonics… wish I tried for them back near release when the loot pool was so small and didn’t get so much junk… I felt like I was actually getting things for my money.

considering gvg actually isn’t really a thing it is more like 2 organized zergs just trying to wipe each other right now. if they ever add GVG to gw2 most likly yes rangers will have a gvg build that will out play several other people, but in the zerg vs zerg style gvg that’s been going on that isn’t much a ranger can do other than spirits, traps are ok but there is usually so much aoe cleanse that the conditions don’t even last.

also right now the utility rangers have not many of them are useful unless you are willing to spend 20 or 30 trait points, compared to other classes this is horrible. most classes utility CD plays a significant role on their performance whether they are traited or not. engineer is actually in the same boat as ranger, most of the utilities the 2 classes have are not great stand alone utilities with only 1 or 2 exceptions depending on your spec (power or cond)

actually right now there is a lot of people jumping to servers that have tequatl near dead or dead. this is causing issues on said servers. people are less inclined to try and work hard and rather let others do the hard work, if this keeps up for the entirety of the tequatl boss week thing home servers will eventually be filled with people who are unable to complete the events (lazy people or people who do not understand the fight or that don’t want to do a specific task for the fight) and people who were able to complete the events will be spread across many overflows or will manage to gather on select over flows to accomplish the fight.

I highly doubt guests are causing the overflows. TC has a gigantic pve population. Even on FA which has a lower pve population compared to TC, we sometimes get overflow for Temples/SB/Maw/Dragons. Don’t be lazy and get there early and do the pre-events. Most people who complain about overflows are the ones who only zone in for the boss…….

no we have a high population of people from other servers, mostly low population servers that guest on our server and have no issue rubbing it in that they are guesting for an easy ride through these events. doesn’t help that we also have websites that have timers for the boss spawns that they are fallowing as well, all they do is hop from event to event on their chars.
there should not be an incentive to do these things on servers with higher populations, there should be an incentive to bring people together and do these kind of events on home servers.
guests wouldn’t kitten me off if they don’t rub it in the way they do, esp if they get a precursor.

You have no one to blame but yourselves, after many TC players advertised it as the unofficial meta server several months back. Which I found funny at the time because they just wanted more people to come to their server to make it even more popular than it could handle.

that is like saying you are responsible for someone you didn’t vote for getting into office and passing horrible laws.
no it was not something we wanted it was the actions of very few individuals who promptly took down said posts after being publicly bashed for them.
if any posts still remain it is not from TC players, there was something like 4 whole days in LA devoted to bashing players who were advertising guesting to our server that were on our server.

in addition to pet AI and f2 improvements, i feel pets need a 30% aoe resist in wvw and PVE, or some kind of dodge or aegis mechanic as u said.

pets also need to make more of a difference. right now, theyre used mostly for the DPS, with the exception of spiders and wolves, which are used for the CC. this is just wrong. pets need to be a toolbox of utility. one step in this direction would be to give drakes’ tail swipe as active ability for on-demand burst and blast finisher.

unfortunately we have been asking for this devs keep saying it would make the class to complicated and people wouldn’t know how to work it… I don’t think we are that stupid though

tbh we need a longer ranged pet that has aoe mechanics in its attacks would fix 60% of the current pet problems vs zergs, the other 40% would be fixable by giving pets a smart dodge mechanic that triggers and allows them to evade as a player would when they take x amount of dmg

right now Tarnished Coast is still having overcrowding issues for many of the meta events for the open world, especially temples, dragons, and any other large chest bosses, many people are guesting to tarnished coast to complete these events rather than doing them on their home servers. This is leading to many people being put in overflow and missing many meta world events. For those of us that have Tarnished Coast as our home server if we wish to be present for meta events and not kicked into overflows we have to be there way before the events start, or have someone who is in our party there way before the event starts sitting there doing nothing.

what I would really like to know is will there ever come a time when people are given an extra incentive to do these events on their home servers so as to relieve the over crowding on Worlds that people have taken a liking to doing these events on?

today was the first time that orr hit overflow for taking lyssa’s temple in over 8 months. so it is steadily getting worse on Tarnished coast. please Anet consider giving people a reason to do these events on home servers and not guest to get them!!! give people more of a reason to stand by their world choices. I’m not asking to punish people that guest for events just make it more rewarding to do the events on home servers, like giving a random exotic on top of the dialy rare or something like that, would help facilitate dark matter as well…. really any extra incentive would be great.

for crafting soft wood plank is taking 4 logs to make one plank, this is one more log per plank than any of the other wood planks that are crafted being that they all take 3 besides this one.

so far with the animals in game there are 2 Families that could be added to the ranger pets that would be capable of hitting 1,200 since their counterparts in the wild have no issue doing.

Siege Devourers
not overly huge being the juvenile looking for something around the size of a cow or a slightly larger than the brown bear.

  • attacks all at 1,200 range with the exception of attacks triggered in melee range.
    1. Besiege - cast time 1.25 sec, 20% projectile finisher, arcing projectile about the same speed of catapult projectiles. 1,250 dmg
    2. Dirt Cloud - your siege devourer kicks up the dirt around it blinding all nearby foes for 3 seconds, combo field smoke lasting 4 seconds blinding each second, 20 sec CD
    3. Throw Burning Pitch - cast time 2sec, arcing projectile that causes burning on hit for 1.25 sec and leaves a combo fire field at target’s location (same size as bonfire) that causes additional burning for every 1 sec, lasting 5 sec. CD 28 sec
    4. Sieging Volley (special attack F2) - cast time 4.5 sec, your siege devourer launches a volley of attacks at your target location raining from the sky and damaging all foes in the area (similar to meteor shower with a damage range of 600-1000 on each hit?) CD55 or 60 seconds (long CD since this would be an incredibly powerful tool for us to have possibly longer than a min cd if necessary)

Wurm
Not looking for a wurm the size of the hatchlings like the norn racial, more along the size of the hostel ice wurms between Slough of Despond Waypoint and where the Claw of Jormag lands in Frostgorge sound. Wurm size does matter as much because it will be hidden underground while moving can have the tunneling animation but really does not draw attention to a ranger running because it is not sticking 8-10ft in the air during movement, and pops out of the ground when it stops.

  • attacks all at 1,200 range with the exception of attacks triggered in melee range.
    1. Hurl Boulder - cast time 1sec your wurm throws a boulder at your foe striking them, 1,100 damage, similar projectile speed to longbow or short bow arrows
    2. Coiled Thrash - cast time 1sec( or animation time?) your wurm coils it’s self and uncoils rapidly and violently knocking back all foes within 300 range, knocks foes back 450, causing 1,340, 20 sec CD
    3. Tunneling Retreat - your wurm disappears under the earth crippling near by foes for 8 seconds and retreating a distance of 900 strait back (stops short if there is a wall or ledge in the way) and then resurfacing. causing 450 dmg when submerging and when resurfacing, 24 sec CD
    4. Boulder Upchuck (special attacks) - your wurm up-chucks a LARGE boulder that it had eaten to give an additional elemental effect, this boulder also damages a large area and causes knockdown to foes that are within the area, area affected in a 200 or 180 radius?, also is an arcing projectile traveling at the same speed of a catapult attack, causing 2,240 dmg, CD 45sec
  • additional effects for boulder upchuck are as fallows
    - Plains Wurm (earth) – boulder upchuck does a 14 sec cripple.
    - Ice Wurm (ice) – boulder does a 6 sec chill,
    - Jungle Wurm (poison) causes 8 sec poison
    - Lava Wurm (if they didn’t go extinct on the Ring of Fire islands, fire) – causes burning for 5 sec

and in my opinion the lava wurm with the red glowy maw and all would probably be the coolest looking, that is if they didn’t get wiped out.

but that would be my take on pets that we could have at 1,200 range, what their attacks would be, while giving us the best we could hope for from them while still keeping it remotely balanced leaving people enough time to dodge large attacks or get out of the way of them, as for pet stats, the wurm would probably be have more power and health while the siege devourer would get more toughness and precision.

anyways what do you guys think, do you all like these proposed pets? Do their attacks sound pretty good to you guys?
I just feel we need 1,200 range pets and ones that could be good in WvW with some arc attacks and utility to help us deal with larger groups of people…while not getting turned into a throw rug for someone’s living room.

Haha, I find it hilarious that a ranger is faster than a lot of professions by going backwards.

I’m still a little skeptical. How much damage does a sword auto do on average with, say, a zerk build? (not that I’ll use one)

Perhaps a short vid in a dungeon or in WvW? Someone must suffer for science!

that’s kind of hard to do cause being 100% melee gets you killed wickedly fast in a zerk build. they are one of the fastest hitting weapons ranger has though.

bows are situational, right now though axes, torches, swords, greatswords, and daggers are more efficient as they have good mobility, good control and give you added benefits to your abilities like dodge and weakness, chill, cripple, burning, poison. Bows are good but they are lack luster in the whole killing someone before they kill you department, which is most apparent in 1v1. rangers don’t have any real glasscannon build remember that, if you try to kill someone with a power build usually they will get up to you before you nocked down 1/2 their health and they will crit you for 8k+ with a melee attack and fallow it up with a series of similar damaging attacks while you are shooting them with a bow, and short bow since the whole nerf to quickness and our access to getting quickness the bleed stacks are not there so you are looking more at the base dmg from the auto attack on foes rather than base + bleeding as it used to be for most encounters. LB, just doesn’t have the dmg, you can open up with it but best to swap weapons once they hit the 900 range mark.

Useless utility skills

ranger does not have any real great utility skills, most of our utility in order for it needing to be great requires one or more traits usually grandmaster ones in order for it to be worth the CD on the skill, lets take a look at them real quick, traps suck if you don’t trait them, they are small only where you are standing and the conditions are relatively short, signets un-traited only affect your pet and if your pet is dead and you use it the signet is wasted ( signet of renewal is wasted/useless if you use it while traited and your pet is dead), spirits not traited stay in one location buffing a small area and die if there is a strong gust of wind, shouts most of them don’t work the ones that do have so little use that they are only worth bringing if you have nature’s voice trait to keep regen up.
only utility ranger has that is not dependent on traits are quacking zephyr and sharpening stone. every thing else can not be used effectively without changing traits around to make it so they can be used in more logical situations.

I am looking forward to the new skills and traits being added hoping we will get something that wont req us putting 30 points in traits to have a reason to use it. I hope you all are too.

other classes take grandmaster traits to make what they have do more or add stats/ conditions! we take grandmaster traits to make our utilities work and worth using them practically.

only affects the first hit on rapid fire with the long bow and not the whole skill, which is weird cause the hits do not count as individual hits only takes confusion dmg for the first hit as well, where as barrage counts as individual hits on every hit causing confusion and ret dmg each hit…
Really just wanted to point out that the 150% bonus with the beastmasters sigil trait active does not affect the skill rapid fire but only the first arrow it fires. please point this out to someone, sig rangers will thank you and probably start using the active on sig of the hunt more if it coincides with all of our burstish abilities.

didn’t we get an official response as to why we cant do anything while the signet is active? if I recall it was said that the signet causes a “transformation” that prevents rangers from using any interact ability while it is active, this includes finishing foes and reviving allies which makes this skill very worthless in pvp if you cant revive allies or finish foes if you are traited for beastmaster’s signets, while it is active you are forced to watch you team mates die and you generally cant out dps someone who is rezing a downed foe.

Actually, the easiest fix would be to go ahead and leave them as is but make the black lion tickets work for ALL weapon skins. then have the trader give you a black lion ticket (or five if they want to make it equal the aetherblade skins) in exchange for a wintersday ticket, jade ticket or fused ticket. having all these different tokens is kind of dumb anyay.

still doesn’t make up for all the people that have been able to take advantage of selling skins while several of us have the same skins in our bank that we cant sell

Only newly obtained skins in select sets are tradable. In the past, we intended those skins to be account-bound and not tradable. After the change, these skins will remain account-bound and not tradable. We will continue to monitor the value of those skins, but at this time, there is no plan to make tradability retroactive.

this really does not make any sense especially for the sets from fused weapons and before since back then the merchants that sold them we didn’t know we would have access too at a later date especially with winter’s day weapons that we didn’t have access too view again or even purchase until a few months ago. these skins are also selling for a lot on the trading post (from fused and down skins are going for 80-100+gold) and those of us that had bought them not thinking we would be able to in the future since it was seasonal are reasonably kitten ed right now.

as it has been said in this forums by roseria, if we cant all sell them make it so no one can sell them because some of these skins are holding a lot of value right now!

I purchased my Zodiac sword skin with a ticket after the patch, around 8pm PST… not sellable and account bound. 2 Hour prior to that I had traded in a ticket for a staff skin of the zodiac, sold just find. Hrmmmm…. Im thinking it was related to the hot patch in between those times?

possibly, all I know is that all the skins on the TP were bought today that couldn’t be sold prior, no one has been able to sell skins they had previously that I have talked to. and the hot patch might have made new skins function same as ones sold before today… which is sad, I wanna sell my winter’s bow cause I wont ever use it and I know someone else will, also I want the gold

and this seems to be only an issue with skins existing prior to the patch today, all skins purchased after the patch are able to be posted on the TP with no problem. hope this helps with the investigation.

I think rangers are one of the only classes that the reduce sig cd and grant might on sig use is 2 separate traits in the MM line, most classes that I atleast have played have both of those traits combined in one greater while we have them in 2 greaters

I guess what I will say is that if this new 3 is here to stay in its current form, I will expect them to clean up the MM trait line and not make picking the LB entirely dependent on 30 into MM.

Hopefully, once again if this is here to stay, the other longbow skills will be open to improvements such as AA minimum range decrease for damage, a slight AA damage buff to make it a more clear power choice over SB, and a slight precast time shave from barrage.

yeas I am with you on that, I’m hoping that the new traits and utilities that are coming as well as future balances will improve the Longbow power builds even more. we can only hope right?

2. Hunter’s Shot is an instant cast skill. Meaning, there is no charge up to shoot it (compared to other skills like barrage for example). This makes it harder to dodge because the arrow is not telegraphed.

it still has flight time and that at max range is enough to give someone time to dodge it, rappid fire also has no charge up time it just has the channel time. so even if the first one is fired and dodged you still have all of the other ones that can connect and apply vulnerability. lol we can keep this going but the point is the argument is not valid since it could happen with the old hunters shot and rappid fire is not a step down for vuln application like people are implying it is, it is just different that is all. slightly better in my opinion since it would take 3 dodges to avoid every single application of vuln from it

I am in complete agreement with OP. I found the new mechanic refreshing. I also love stacking vulnerability. Oh and thinks for the raven tip. Never occurred to me.

If you love stacking vulnerability with a longbow, then why don’t you deplore the change? The new version of Hunter’s Shot requires twice the work and one subpar trait to get the same effect the old Hunter’s Shot got with one push of the button.

In WvW especially. Try rapid fire on any enemy player and you will get “obstructed”, “miss” “miss” “miss” 1,356 “miss” “miss”. It’s called dodge rolling twice. Anyone can dodge roll twice through rapid fire and now your precious vulnerability has only stacked 4 times instead of our old guaranteed 10.

this argument can also be applied if someone dodged the old hunters shot only then you would get 0 stacks of vuln which most people usually dodge the first shot you fired at them anyways since it is telegraphed much more

And then that’s the problem they should have fixed, instead of adding something else which compromised a playstyle.

then couldn’t you say the change they did was the fix after all they cant avoid every single shot from rappid fire so they still get some stacks of vuln out of it. the play style hasn’t change drasticly it has just been delayed, you still can get what you had before even beyond if you are willing to give it a try, only thing is different is if you are relying on burst from rappid fire previously you have to wait until it finishes it’s CD before you can get the full benefit of the burst. but you should pay attention more to how much your auto attack is doing as well as barrage and hell even point blank shot, idk if you guys haven’t noticed but point blank does some decent dmg and now that it’s ranged has been increased it is much nicer for combat. I’m just tired of people being stuck on one thing from changes without looking at the bigger picture, acting like it is the end of the world cause 1 button cant grant something instantly…
I’m not aiming this at you Miflett, this is a constant thing on our ranger forums. so few people look at the whole before they jump on the forums. they are soo tunnel minded they see one skill changed they jump on forums and say their build is broke they cant play anymore, don’t take into account all of the other things, there would need to be a whole lot more done to longbow to ruin builds then what has that people are saying their whole build is trash now. like if LB had its dmg reduced and was given conditions to its attacks that would kill the longbow power builds.
I play wvw, pve, spvp, and tpvp and the longbow changers I really like in fact for the first time I am able to have pretty much one build that is viable in everything with only a few traits needing to be changed in the lines and utilities swapped.

also has anyone taken into account rapid fire has a shorter CD then hunters shot?
