I just like how dense people are to thinking that this has anything to do with skill balance… for those unaware, that is handled by a different team than the animation/skin/graphics team… all of you complaining about effort not being used in other areas of the game are kind of acting like kitten right now… please think before you make posts about balance in a thread about appearance for kitten sake… hell I would accept comments about armor clipping but complaining about skills/traits/weapons in here is kitten in every way you look at it. so all of you making these posts grow up and stop looking for places to complain just cause a dev posted in the thread

reintroduce disease and have it have a similar spread mechanic as in gw1 OR a DOT similar to how life transfer was in gw1 and have it syphon off health and give it to the caster while being able to use other abilities

Thank you for that insight, Criminal, but I think I have a very solid understanding of Robert Hrouda’s purpose on this forum.

to talk to us, read our quarries, pass some things on to the balance team, share select information with us, and be a person when no one else at arenanet dared to show their face in our forums for fear of a major back lash or to find severed rabbit heads on their door step with the note " you failed us" attached or the possibility of death threats from the more crazy rangers? yeah I have a good understanding of why Robert Hrouda is on the ranger forums as well, that and on top of it all he has admitted to playing ranger something really no other dev has done.

having the arena net tag next to them doesn’t make them an evil entity, stop being paranoid and look at them as a human being…. in this case a ranger with a lot of connections and inside information.

and side note to Robert, thank you for the good work you have done! and make sure you bring up the fact we need cool looking legendary bows for our rangers! the flowers and rainbows don’t quite go with the whole Norn ranger look at all… or for that matter any ranger look excluding cultural syvari. we need something that strikes fear or awe into the hearts of our foes, that we then piece with the arrows.

introduce unique items from unique mobs that are needed to craft or to combine with another item or to unlock a tomb for an item part or something that would make far more unique unique feel to crafting items or creating items. this would give a much grander experience to the whole manufacturing experience.
could even have special bosses that need to be unlocked in dungeons with another item in order to gain a unique crafting mat or part of a weapon, an example of this would be having an item such as a “heavily rusted helm” that can be acquired in the explorae world, bring said helm into the Ascalon catacombs and place it on the tomb mount of some hero or head of a statue of the hero to spawn a ghost boss that will drop a specture hilt used to craft the specture blade from GW1 underworld, specter blade fragments can be located in other places (there can be also be some item required to have in the inventory such as the rusted helm to determine if a player should get the crafting specific drop so as to reward the players who provided the event item and the remainder of the party gets 1-2 rares with a shot at an exotic) the pieces can ether be thrown in mystic forge or be assembled by weapons smiths in item discovery.
pretty much like the scavenger hunt idea for precursers but for more or less skins with unique looks to them and the thrill of the hunt

You are very fond of this particular question so let me ask you one from the other side of the fence. How has your fawning over Robert Hrouda worked out for the Ranger community? Resulted in anything of merit?

Aside from him personally being responsible for “fixing” the Black Widow’s health?

you do know he is not responsible for ANY balance changes right? Robert Hrouda is a dungeon designer and works on dungeons not profession balance he is just here to talk to us since he happens to play ranger a lot and has ties to pass things to the balance team, like ideas we come up with and things we think might work better, he has no final say in any balance change but having him to talk to is nice. and its even nicer that we can get his opinion about patches before they come out whether they are good are bad and have it be un-bias since he is not talking about something he worked on instead something he played and his personal reactions to playing someone else’s work that affect the class he plays most long before the public gets their hands on it.
and his insight on this next patch coming up has been golden if you all pay attention, we should thank him and keep talking casually with him so we can have a dev to talk to that is willing to say how patches are looking for our class, hell if we scare him off we wont get kitten like we are now

I find my ranger to be really useful in large wvwvw fights, especially when it comes to assaulting towers/keeps/stonemist.

So many loot bags…

the only thing useful rangers can do in large fights is barrage which can be an area denial ability, which has a 25 sec cd, pets are horrible in large fights, and in terms of contributing to the over all goal in forcing the foes out/away rangers are still very poor since we got very poor aoe capability at 1,200+ hell all we got for good aoe is traps and barrage, only other thing we can do is run spirit buffs and stay near the back/ mid so they don’t get wiped out. I have yet to find anything more rangers can do in large scale fights that can actually benefit our own server’s goals…. small scale is a lot better for us but we don’t get bags from small scale activities in wvw…
and yes all you need to do is drop barrage on a large group and you can get 10+ bags from that one ability but in aspect of how much you do it isn’t a lot compared to all the other people firing off more spammable aoes on the opposing forces

Idk what ur talking about u can use number 2 without a target and it still works. your wrong assumption however, may come from the blindness that the thief leaves when he stealths if traited.

if u use the downed skill to interrupt with no target it will use the skill but not do anything, it functions kind of like a signet u can use it with or with out a target but it only works if you have something targeted in which case it is aoe around what you have targeted hell has it in the skill description to affect target and foes around them, have you ever tried it without anything targeted?

This is false, if you use it with no target it will interrupt all foes around you. I have interrupted so many stealthed thieves this way it’s not even funny.

idk even if I use it and not being blind in spvp and pvp still does not interrupt the action, idk if its a quickness thing thiefs got but they still get off the stomp right as they are leaving stealth or within 2 sec after stealth… cloak and dagger is still only 3 sec isn’t it? now that im thinking about it what is the range for stomp compared to the radius of our interrupt?

ranger actually has a lot of really good 1v1 builds, few know how to tap into them and fewer actually use pvp builds in WvW most players stick to a Pve spec, nothing has been changed drastically for rangers if that is what you are asking, just sounds like you ran into one of the few people that spent the time and gold to set up a more pvp orientated spec for WvW, if you were wondering about ranger pvp specs that are being used, there is the spirit bunker, BM (tankish), trap bunker, and the ever popular condition builds including condition spirit based builds that are now popping up

that being said most of the ranger builds with a few exceptions are not great at fighting many people at once, the bunker and bm build are decent if against multiple foes who are less skilled (including 1 skilled player and rest not so skilled) just by wearing foes down. but most ranger builds if elites or utilities are on cooldown they cant handle more than one target just cause very few ranger abilities are aoe and good to use against groups. sure we can still kill 1 out of 3 but the other 2 will get us before we can stomp any more of em

really though in order for melee pets to be able to hit anything you need the be engaged in the fight, and using weapon attacks that give your pet the edge in the fight like crip shot, hunters shot, barrage, really any cripple/stun/swiftness/immobilize/ or chill to pet granting abilities we have on our weapon attacks. they are 100% useless in spvp on their own

really is it bull that the only utility rangers have that grants stability interrupts actions and while it is active providing the stability we can not interact with downed foes like other classes who have access to stability instantly and use so while mid casting on stomps so we cant interrupt them.
Signet of the Wild is our only stability granting utility. and yes we have a utility that grants immune to damage but we can still be knocked back, interrupted, etc with it (Signet of Stone)
its just annoying not being able to interrupt half the stomps that people are doing on you cause they use a stability granting utility during the stomp that renders our downed interrupt completely useless to use on them which makes our downed state not so much a fight to win situation, its a give up you already lost situation…. and yes I wouldn’t be complaining if we could do it too but our only utility granting stability will interrupt the stomp mid cast!!!
also slight suggestion make our interrupt ground targeted so we can still use it around use if foes stealth, and whether this is intended or not it has no rang right now, if you can target something you can hit it
hell even warriors and guardians can use their knock downs and knock backs with out a target selected… really I’m not sure if our immune utility is broken since other classes immune abilities stop such actions or if our stability is broken

Healing tree steal should be changed

change this item to make it diffrent from the ranger aoe heal. as it stands it is exactly the same in terms of usefullness to a party as healing springs is since it does exactly the same thing for party members, it grants regernation and removes 1 condition every second, please change it to match the other theif skills that are lesser versions of other classmechanics and not the exact same mechanic,
for instance have it purg all conditons on use and not purge conditions over time, or not grant regernation… or buff the ranger healling springs to remove all conditions to match the null field from mesmers and granting ranger more utility to group play… OR give healing spring a greatter bust in the ability to heal party members cause as it is right now healing springs is does not have that life saving aspect uniqe to healing abilities on other classes

dont worry with the quickness nerf pets cant attack that fast anymore to begin with, the basic pet attack speed is once every 3 sec for their basic attacks, so they can maybe get off 3 or 4 attacks with quickness now, still wont be anymore 2.7 sec stuff

I think they should put back the default speed of quickness when you swap a pet.
Or else remove that traits and change it. Like fear your enemy for 3 sec when you swap pet. Or gain 5 sec regeneration when you swap pet or Bleed you enemy when you swap pet. Something like that. Because Gain quickness when you swap pet is now useless.

well yah, its more usless now cause the pet u get wont be able to take advantage of that 2 sec even with a ranged pet, used to be able to get an instant attack with the 100% speed, but now its only lasts 2/4 of the attack animation for pets?

and as far as the quickness nerf, it hurt pets ALOT more than it hurt the rangers themselfs… just thinking about how many less attacks Mr Wiggles (best name ever to look and see someone downed by Mr Wiggles) will hit now in pvp makes me sad. idk why players are complaining about hitting less look at what ur pet is doing is all im saying
@ Paz Shadow the devs already explained it, quickness made some encounters not very engaging in lamance terms, also led to alot of classes using it as spikes in pvp for example warriors with quickness using 100blades

guys just remember Robert Hrouda does not balance classes he is not on that same team he is a dungeon designer that plays ranger so if anything he is like our voice in meetings about class balance and he can make suggestions… not to mention he doesnt seem like a bad guy. been talking to the most high strung community in the GW2 that 2 months ago wanted to rip the head off the being they saw with a anet logo above their head. please do not ruin our only communication to the balance team by bashing him for the balance of the game for rangers currently… we all know that the balance team does not get on forums as much as they should. and thank Robert here for willing to talk for the rangers and give suggestions at the balance meetings they have on our behalf.

rangers are not well off in pvp at all nor WvW lol the patch hurt both lot more than u know, we used to be competitive cause of all the access we had to quickness to drop alot of conditions or fast dmg, but we kinda lost that just now, granted other classes lost stuff too we lost the ability to spike 25 stacks of bleeding and launch our best aoe in under 2 sec and put out rappid fire….rappidly… and do some insanly fast stabbing with a sword…. really im not sure we have a good weapon set for pvp atm now.

lol im just throwing this out there but since our weapons are on the low end of the damage scale and since we now dont have access to the faster attacks on our long cast longbow abilities as well as our decreped aoe abilities such as axe Main hand and barrage… hell even our abillity to apply conditions was effected. think we will get any compensation to remain competitive with the classes that dont need gimics to do 8k+ dmg in one hit? cause this hurt our class more in PvP then it hurt our class in PvE or WvW.

also any quickness on pets is now almost usless since pets have an avg attack time of 3 sec so they wont even be able to get off one full attack with the pet swap trait even if u are at point blank with a melee pet…. the trait for it to be usefull for pets needs to be double so up to 4 sec for pets to get the same benefite they had on the original version of the 2 sec quickness from the pet swap trait…. hell i would even accept if pets got a much longer quickness then players

this might change next patch, Great sword is being buffed apreariently so sit on this question for alittle bit befor you accept a def answer, but as it stands right now Sword does more dmg vs 1 target, Greatsword has aoe for 3 targets + evasion built in

I dont know if this is a bug or intended but anyone else notice pets dont res with you at waypoints anymore, they rez where they died/you died and run to u, dragging everything from where you died including bosses in doungens to you and your potential party?
i dont know if this is a bug or if it is intended but i have wipped a party already because of the pet on the son of svanir fractal with the mobs around the fire for the ice wall…. yes it was funny for me but my party didnt find it that funny

really considering preperations are a ranger thing as listed under their skills we only got near zip preperations to choose from, so here is my idea, replace “guard” with “read the wind” preperation from GW1, this for a few reasons 1. because this will make long bow freaking awesome, 2. guard is near useless in its current utility.
for those of u that dont know the read the wind preperation casued arrow abilities to move twice as fast and deal more damage for 24 seconds… for a gw2 implimation it could affect all ranged abilities for ranger which is alot since most of our weapons (MH axe, shortbow, longbow, dagger offhand, torch offhand, GS throw, speargun, harpoon throw) are ranged in some way, this would be alot more utility than what we have for guard, also since it affects the player and not the pet would be much more reliable to use in heavy combat.

any thoughts? and any other preperations people can think of that would be useful and shouts that could be dropped for them?

and for refrence here are the preperations from Ranger preperations in GW1 really i feel preperations would have much more utility and we are not capping on that idea with what we have cough sharpening stone cough

lol thats exactly right nerva, good rangers in WvW dont usually go off alone if they do they usually are moving from one location to another and have the utility and weapon skills to get away from groups or foes that try to jump them.

also i just want to mention WvW can not be a mesurement of skill. Just for the fact that you are not fighting all LvL 80’s (alot of them are lower lvled and trying to level to 80 so they run around looking for events) so no, not everyone is in exotices and karma exotics do not have the best stats anyways for WvW…rangers really need spicific stats to make weapons work, they are not like other classes where you can mix stats and still be efficent with any of your weapons.

wait people complain when an attack is wasted on jade maw? i dodge the beam all the time considering i usually back my self in a corner to kill tenticles, i only get 2 crystals to throw constantly once they are out i just dodge untill 1 of the 2 tenticles respawn when ever targeted. and when my pet gets targeted it is a pain in the kitten takes almost twice as long to kill the tenticles without a pet cause yours gets killed

if people complain about shots being wasted tell them to go kill the tenticles, each one killed damages the jade maw

No good player dies to the Ranger. I still havn’t lost a fight to one. Not even when I am playing my Ranger.

sPvP is for the people who can’t be bothered to level, or can’t handle the full damage of WvW. There is nothing like fighting harder hitting players under the damage of siege, and still surviving.

If I can survive a Thieves burst in Glass Canon build, that does easily 50% more than they do in sPvP, while dodging cat shots, and treb shots, what makes you think a Ranger could ever kill me in sPvP?

I’ve never lost a single fight with a Ranger, nor an Engineer. I’ve only lost three fights against Necromancers. You see, I attend fight clubs virtually every other day, and spend hours at fight clubs on weekends.

so wait wait wait… so you never actually fought a ranger in sPvP where all gear is standard and there is no gear gaps and people are rather skilled at fighting other people and not npcs? hahaha go play some sPvP see how well rangers treat you mate

about the HoM pets and non-hom pets i thought we already had the disscussion when the game came out? it ended in an agreement that having 2 of the same pet types was gimping yourself in any pve/wvw enviroment. only having 2 melee, 2 range or 2 buff pets in your slots durring combat will siverly limit your adaptability to fighting in most instances. we discussed it was better to have 1 of one type and 1 of another type for those that were not in the disscussion… and as for spiking ability? not really, pets cant spike since they dont carry might and they are to iffy to rely on making it to the target since swaping pets it has travel time from you back to the farget and usually if it is melee doing this tactic will kill one of your 2 pets giving you the extended swap time.

the only real place that having 2 of the same pets is viable is in sPvP which HoM pets are avalible for all.
so in conclusion, dont use 2 of the same pet types in pve, anyone who is somewhat skilled in the class will agree that there are times u dont want a melee pet and you dont want a pet to be hanging back when it can be dealing alot of damage very quickly for you…. this applies to wvw as well, there will be times when u are in a keep and your pet wont be able to hit foes, and there will be times when you are wanting to drop someone as quick as possible. make your self flexible….. at least untill they make it so we can swap pets while in combat to pets that are not in our active slots… than you have the possible right to complain… or not… we really dont know what such a thing would do to pet balance atm. but please stop thinking that having 2 of the same pet type is somehow giving someone an advantage right now because that is really far from the case, it is more of a hinderance, expecialy in my personal experiance from trying to lvl with the jungle spider and the blackwiddow.
also sidenote, the spiders dont “stun” their active is really an immobilize, not sure if it is a bug or not but it has the same effect as the web and foes can still hit u if they are immobilized. (if you have doughts about this go test it you will see and can look at the 2 crossed chains icon and the name immobilize that comes up for the condition that the active F2 causes).

im sorry for you guys that missed all the conversations we had at launch it seems like some of you would have liked them and have been a great addition to them glad to know we still have good thinkers in our ranger community.

Thrown Axe Projectile

i really do agree, main hand axe for rangers should be effected by the skin, mainly by the mystic forge and crafted recipies that req lodestones to make. its the only way rangers use main hand axes and getting something that looks really cool is alet down cause the moment it leaves ur char it turns into the same skin as the axe u started with at lvl 1, would really like to see my titan’s vengience fly through the air…expecialy since the animation for it is already there because of the conjur flame skill, same with the axes sons of svaniar throw…. its not like the models are all missing alot of them are there already

can you see if you can get the dmg on ranged pets bumped up abit or get projectile speed bumped up?
really there should be no reason why ranged pets should be doing half the dmg of melee pets on auto attacks, rangers own rang skills are balanced to take the hit for ranged dmg already compared to the melee weapons, and also rangers are balanced to do less dmg then any other class with ranged damage since the pet is factored in for ranged dmg on ranger…. it just feels like a double hit to rangers using ranged pets while using ranged weapons cause the only way to capitalize with a ranged weapon on a ranger is to use a melee pet right now since spider and devourer damage is really pathetic in comparison. it would probably open up ranged pets for more use in pvp as well since their projectiles are soo slow atm and do very little damage

has anyone mentioned ranger pets using some percentage of bas player stats to be added to their stats to keep them inline damage wise since ascended gear is being added and as player dmg and health is going up pets remain unaffected, also this would in pets being more in the rangers control by using stats rangers use, such as giving condition dmg to lynx since it is a very heavily condition pet with all the bleeds (if traited every single attack it can do can cause a bleed) it can do and the pet condition dmg trait isnt really worth it, its 5-8 more dmg a tick… not a whole lot from a greater trait, lol incomparison necros got a trait to give fear dmg, and that starts at around 500 a tick. pets getting some of the stats rangers spec in just seems more rewarding to the ranger to have the pets you want to since u can build them into your playstyle more than what they are now like the lynx for condition builds

something is wrong when i cant attack on my home server cause the response is so slow with all the people there that are guesting, they are very open about getting loot on our server, (im on tarnished coast) on claw of jormag my screen has actually just gone black for a min of the fight, nothing showed up than it poped back up…. please do something to cut down on trafic to already high pop servers! exp since we can only do these one time a day and they are not fun anymore on high pop servers

you are aware this is what it used to be out of combat, and the boons stack up to 25 applications if they dont start timing out, the bet boons being as they dont last long you will not reach that mark you will time out of boons before you reach the max extended point that u can have for boons

im not looking for people to come in here whining about how things are unbalanced we all know the issues on hand (if you dont let me give you a quick run down, broken traits, lackluster utilities leading to lack of diversity with play styles, weapons that dont feel right in combat, pets that get killed with no way to keep them alive since they can not dodge or evade attacks such as the jade maw’s beam in fractals)
we were told we would get some attention to give ranger quality of life improvements and we have yet to see them, and we do love our rangers, again rangers are not bad we just have things seriously wrong with them, the most blantant being the lack of playstyles we can do on them in a pve enviroment, we got steady dps, and….stready dps, which has lead to alot of people getting bored with rangers in pve, or undermine the uses of having rangers in parties.
So since we actually do enjoy playing our rangers and not playing them for an extended amount of time really isnt an option for alot of us, just one up this if you would like to call attention to rangers needing attention or some interaction with the dev community… agian not looking for people to make points here, not looking for kitten wars, if you are unsatisfied with how things have been going for ranger, 1+ this, once there gets enough 1+ its bound to be looked at and the more this has hopefully, the better off we will be.
but again Please do not come here to complain about rangers. not what this is about we already have alot of threads about complaining, keep this neat and organized without cluttering it with filth….lets try the diplimatic aproch for once insted of threats and rage.

right now if a ranger is fighing any target that has any ability to stealth we can not effectivly counter that with 3 of our weapons. All (with the exception of 2) of the ranger projectile abilities(longbow, shortbow, axe, greatsword throw, dagger throw) do not fire out in a strait line when no target is found, insted they are shot/launched almost directly into the ground infront of us. For us to be more balanced against stealth foes please fix our ranged abilities to go out to near if not max distance accross the land scape when no target is found so we can at least shoot/throw in the direction we think they are in since we cant target them currently to be able to damage them at all unless we are using one of very few abilities with a long cool down. this is in comparison to alot of other classes that ether fire in a strait line from their char or fire something that tracks accross the landscape

lol what rampage said, but it depends on where you are in WvW, in some of the teirs of those finding 1v1 battles is kind of hard (usually when u think u find one it is a culling issue and there is really 15 other players around him that ur client is not registering), its very easy to find mob on mob battles though in the group of servers im in

because right now as it is, if you want to play a ranger well, and i mean just well you need to be aware and fairly skilled, if you want to be great, you need to excell. it takes less effor to do well with most other classes, also u dont need to pay attention to 2 entities on the screen…its the princible of being able to do that is what makes it worth playing imo, also when you have so many people complaining about something you have no issue with like ranger PvP.

well it kinda sucks that we take the hit for ranged dmg being less than melee, take the hit from our ability skills to account for the pet, and take the hit for having a ranged pet that deals half the dmg as a melee pet, i could understand if it just attacked slower and did the same dmg, would make melee pets still desirable in situations that they can be used safely, and the use of a ranged pet when meleeing a boss is a very bad idea but the dmg loss is extreamly significant right now when using a ranged pet compaired to a melee pet… they just attack slower and deal about half the dmg that melee pets do, exp the devourer, spider can atleast break 1k on a hit, im 20 in beastmastery and the decourers are doing about 700 base damage on the double attacks, its around 340(x2), compaired to the cat which is dealing 2.3k…. since our abilities are balanced around our pets wouldnt it make sence that all pets have the same base attack dmg with the exception of pets that have more natural power in their stats?
