I'am Really Tired Of Thieves

Tbh, I’m really tired of engineers – there’s an attitude with that class that just rubs me the wrong way. Maybe I’ve just run into real kittens, but to me it seems that there is a higher proportion of arrogance in the engineer playerbase than any other class – ok I sincerely apologise to all the friendly engineers out there, but I’m just calling it as I see it.

Thieves at least most of them being glass, I always have a chance of winning as it only takes landing one solid burst. But then, that’s the difference between using sword(traited)/torch instead of staff – 9s BF, swap (using terrain) and prestige make life a lot easier vs a thief.

6 Essential Tips Lockdown Mesmers Must Know

in Mesmer

Tbh they should be called “Mantra of Distraction” builds – because everything revolves around it.

Sorry if I sound bitter – I love physical crowd control skills like Into the Void and iWave, but I absolutely hate everything about MoD – its sound effect, visual effect, usage, the fact that in order to make good use of any interrupt traits you need to have it on your utility bar…

I sincerely hope that HoT will introduce a wider variety of crowd control skills with the new specialisation, as the only thing putting me off anything more than a semi-interrupt build is my hatred of that Mantra.

How to master shatters/mantras?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Curunen.8729

Curunen.8729

As said in the other thread – you really need full or near to full trait points to work with those kinds of builds.

I’ve not levelled a mesmer in the new trait system, but a quick search shows that you now earn 8 more trait points between level 60 and 80 – which is crazy.

There are master traits which would provide the most significant support while learning the class, such as Deceptive Evasion (duelling X) – with which you will also gain Sharper Images (Duelling Master minor) and Critical Infusion (Duelling Adept minor), both of which make a big difference in play.

For mantra builds you really ought to push for Restorative Mantras (Inspiration X) and Harmonious Mantras (Duelling XI).

Then you’ve got the two phantasm damage traits – Phantasmal Strength (Inspiration GM minor) and Empowered Illusions (Domination III) which taking at least one is important for any kind of power phantasm build.

For shatter builds, Shattered Concentration (Domination VII) makes a huge difference when say fighting an ele. Then depending on power/condition, other traits like Illusionary Persona (Illusions XI), Maim the Disillusioned (Illusions XII), Mental Torment (Domination I) and Deceptive Evasion are all mandatory in order to function effectively.

For buffing Staff and Greatsword (and Trident if you care about that) damage, Illusionary Elasticity (Illusions VII) is a crucial trait.

Regarding gear – Energy sigils will provide their money’s worth in any build, especially if taking Deceptive Evasion, but even just to dodge more stuff.

I could go on and on, but I hope the picture is clear – mesmer without enough trait points = awful.

I would like changes to torch honestly. This class is boring as crap!!!

Mesmer boring? Are we playing the same class?

Well I am leveling this class now. It’s my last character till expansion before I have a 80 of each class.

Teach me how to make this fun to play. Because right now only offhand pistol has any nice attacks other than great sword which is two hander.

Get to 80, play interrupt or shatter, reconsider what you just wrote.

Mesmer is known for having a notoriously awful levelling experience – made even worse with the trait acquisition changes. I would hate to level one from scratch again outside of PvP and tomes of knowledge.

That would make both Lyss & Ilya actually worth having dual anomalies, spirit links, whatever… AWESOME if that became a reality…

How strange would it be if they inverted shields to be a main hand, ranged (more offensive) weapon.
They reversed the Great Sword, why not shield?

Forget shield! give us pistol FOCUS main hand.

The enameled ones are by far superior due their additional shaders, yet both over 20g for sure!

[Prediction Suggestion]Stealth in Stronghold

Curunen.8729

Lol, break one class and hurt another, both of whic are already at a slight disadvantage in conquest as it is…

Edit: Every thief would probably be forced to play s/d perma evade, and most mesmers would be negatively affected without the option to access at least one stealth skill (unless niche build like blurred insc full signets with say sw/sw, staff and either moa or tw elite…).

I’d rather fight a team of thieves in non-conquest, than say a team of engineers on Foefire…

Stealth is fine, we have no idea what will be most efficient in Stronghold, I’m sure there will be suitable countermeasures to balance out the situation, whatever the case it will be nice to have a change from trying to uproot kittening bunkers from cap points.

Gs +sword/torch builds?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Curunen.8729

Curunen.8729

I use sometimes this shatter build for WvW roaming:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fhAQNAR8flknpNtlpxRNcrNSrxg6tyqMSGQBlciqB-TlCFwAy3fYpSFAPAgrKBFcEAQqMwpSKaq/kR3wiLCApAMXZE-w

Good survivability due to the additional stealth + condi removal from torch and nice melee shatter damage with The Prestige’s reappearance effects. With the proper weapon swaps after going invisible with torch you can do some pretty amazing melee shatter dmg with GS.

However, don’t expect to catch anyone, who’s running away. I much rather prefer GS/Sw+F with Domination IV (chattered concentration) over IX (Cleansing Conflagration) to be able to CC my targets more and remove protection and stability.

EDIT:
For PvP I guess GS/Sw+T shatter would work too. You are losing the boon stripping from traditional shatter build though. Also melee shatter in PvP is very risky. Double ranged shatter would be safer imho. Well… but I usually also go for GS/Sw+F in PvP. The additional pull is very strong and can screw up anyone’s rotation nicely^^

Erm, you can take boon strip – no one holding a magic bullet to your head to take cleansing conflag. I do all the time (need to correct my sig link tbh).

Only time cleansing conflag truly shines is when fighting thieves – more stealth uptime to survive/setup bursts and also not having to break down a great wall of boons. Otherwise shattered concentration is better, especially if taking mantra of resolve.

As for not contesting a cap due to stealth – well we’re never staying on point for too long anyway, more moving in and out depending on the situation – and on the flipside I personally think blurred frenzy is better at holding one’s ground than untraited chaos armour/storm with it’s long cooldown.

The main benefit staff has going for it is phase retreat and kiting around terrain and also not having to decide between 1200 blink and blade training (I prefer blade training when using sw/t in pvp because 9s blurred frenzy and ~7s ileap are life savers), otherwise I believe Sw/T to be marginally superior when it comes to direct confrontation in open ground and vastly superior when fighting a thief (ie, you don’t have to run away from them unless they are godlike – and even then, all it takes is one good prestige → mirror blade → mind wrack or whatever way the situation calls for a surprise shatter to share the humble pie).

The thing to note with GS and sw/t is that you only have one decent power phantasm which on the flipside is not good in a condition build.

So you kind of have to play a power build, and then you have to balance between damage sources (yourself, your illusions and shatters). There’s not much room for variety with that weapon set. Take whatever traits you like, but damage will have to revolve around GS pew pew, the izerker and shatters.

Swapping torch for a different offhand instantly opens up other possibilities (phantasm, interrupt, etc).

Recently I’ve been trying to make my own builds, one thats been fairly effective centered around phantasms that uses gs and sword/pistol. After seeing the traditional shatter build that uses gs and sword/torch I wondered if maybe there were other weird options to use to make it effective. Im guessing it’s not possible?

Maybe the hybrid build Ross linked, although there your main damaging conditions would be bleeding from sharper images, a little bit of confusion and a tiny bit of burning from the prestige.

It’s hard to force the GS into a hybrid (power/condition) build compared to simply going raw power, and especially if sword is your other mainhand (again rubbish at conditions), so yeah as you say GS+Sw/T does severely limit your methods of dealing damage so no matter what traits you take, in order to be even semi efficient you will be forced to play in a certain way.

And as others have said – taking a different offhand (sword/pistol/focus) instantly opens up what you can get away with both in gear and in traits.

Vs Mesmer: Mesmer Perspective?

in Mesmer

Curunen.8729

Assuming the situation is a 1v1 so not having to worry about other enemies…

I vastly prefer having high damage burst on gs+sw/t shatter against other mesmers. I find it is the easiest to turn the fight around in an instant, even against tankier builds. Can use range against condition mesmers – have enough stealths to compete well, even if they are running stealth/condition, and then put them on the back foot at the right moment. If they are glass, well then it only takes one solid hit to finish – and I enjoy this style of fighting more as in who lands the knockout punch first. On the flipside the thing I personally find doesn’t work well for me is if I am doing small, sustained damage – because it’s so easy for an enemy mesmer to reset a fight, I find it is much easier if I can deliver high burst at the right time instead of a pea shooting contest.

I find the worst thing against other mesmers is our reflects – sure, an enemy iduelist might suicide on a traited iwarden, but because of things like the greatsword I find that most of the time all our reflect options, while amazing against other classes like engineers are a huge liability against other mesmers. I look forward to build templates so that I can switch between suitable builds/gear at the click of a button.

1. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you’re about to face a Mesmer?

  • What is the first thing that comes to mind when you’re about to face a Mesmer?

There can be only one. . .

HAHA, so much this.
I will do everything possible to be the alpha mesmer. xD

2. How do you feel about your odds of winning?
Depends on watching them. If they’re glass, usually confident. If it’s 1v1, confident. Most of the time confident to start with because of knowing it only takes one good burst to win so even if at a disadvantage, or having lost once it is always possible to win. Problems arise if it becomes 1v2+ and they are of equal skill, because then bad things happen.

3. Strategies and tactics?
Deliver knockout punch with as much surprise as possible (more surprise needed the better the opponent), maintain pressure to keep on the back foot.
If things go south from the start, make sure to have a gtfo option in the back of my mind (through terrain or skillbar) – better to escape and survive.
Play aggressive – don’t give them an inch, but try not to over extend (ties in with the point above) because it’s easy to get schooled when one assumes the fight is over before the enemy is stomped.

4. What skills (weapon or utility) are most important to have in this fight?
Anything but absolutely no reflects (mirror, traited focus, feedback…), especially if they are using GS unless I want to eat dirt.
Stealth obviously helps, energy sigils obviously help, high burst potential (power or condition) obviously helps.

5. How do you feel about Mesmer in general?
Can do with targeted buffs – never afraid of an enemy mesmer. Compare that to a good enemy engineer (shudder), ele, thief, ranger, necro, guardian, warrior…
Funny that.

But also I very rarely see enemy or friendly mesmers who are rude or unpleasant – whereas there seem to be a whole lot of very unpleasant engineers (seem to be always adding to the block list). Generally there seems to be good camaraderie between mesmers, which I’m very happy about.

No new mainhand?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Curunen.8729

Curunen.8729

It would be a travesty if there was no new main hand weapon to accompany the supposed shield. I’ve always found the lack of main-hand variant to be a source of Mesmer build stagnation, so I actually think a new main-hand is quite important.

Edit: It’s entirely possible that specialising as a Mesmer provides different main-hand sword skills.

Imagine if mainhand sword could have a ranged auto attack option like greatsword – but three fast bolts (like a sci-fi blaster) instead of a channeled beam.

That would be an awesome alternative.

Don’t bother starting unless you already have a few of the unique items from the living story chain.

The grind is absurd and tbh you’re better off making a cheaper ascended backpiece if you just want the stats.

The bloodstone converter is non essential – not much gain over simply deleting excess dust in the first place.
The backpiece skin looks great – one of my favourites – however it is not a quick or easy crafting process.

No new mainhand?

I don’t care whether it’s a pistol or a mainhand toilet cleaner – as long as we get a new mainhand.

4 off hands at the moment, only two mainhands – and each mainhand has completely different purposes (melee/direct damage, ranged/mainly condition damage).

If we get another offhand without also getting a mainhand, it will not help with loadout variety.

If we don’t, then I hope at least we might get alternate skills for sword and scepter, allowing us to customise each into the role we prefer.

in Mesmer

Posted by: Curunen.8729

Curunen.8729

I know it’s just a nonsense rumour, but thinking about it – what would the skills look like if they were converted for land use?

I suggested multiple times to change the underwater weapons to normal weapons; Every weapon should be use-able underwater and on land regardless. But I have not heard anything official about this. Sorry if I started a rumor at one point.

Why do I think that would be great?

  • You already have them included in the loot and crafting tables, from level 1 to legendary. They have already functioning ingame models.
  • Underwater Combat with an extra weapon set is not very intuitive. If all weapons would be useable underwater, it might improve the underwater combat experience.

BTT:

Anyway, do you feel any skills need radical changes to function well on land, or even just to carve out a different niche for each weapon so as not to overlap too much with current land weapons?

  • Vortex:
    It would need a reduced casting time, from 1 1/4 to 3/4;
but at the same time, a good casting-animation, that the opponent could dodge it.
If the Vortex is in place, it needs a new graphical effect. You should still be able to see what’s going on. Maybe making the effect more transparent?
  • Trident:
Increase base damage of ‘Ineptitude’ to bring it on the same level as ‘Mind Stab’ and reduce the casting time.
Adjust the priority list of the bounces from ’Siren’s Call’ to primary target opponents.

Oh – no, please don’t worry, this is not directed at anyone here.

It’s from the teaser information/pictures for the reveals later this month (see general forum), so despite being mentioned many times in the past it might (keyword, might…) finally be happening.

Good idea on the vortex cast time and it could be made more transparent. I like the underwater cast animation – not sure what would work on land. I think it should root you while casting, like mind stab, but of course this would have to be done very carefully so as not to be annoying in practice.

Trident blind could be made to do more damage – I’m thinking that if the phantasm was a crowd control phantasm (net shot and then a volley of damage or something), the number 5 skill turned into an aoe lockdown, then perhaps both 2 and 3 could be altered to enhance the cc possibilities of the trident. It could be the go to weapon for lockdown builds if this was the case.

I must also agree that trying to play any form of build that deals damage (power or condition) through frequent shattering of illusions without using DE is considerably worse than with using DE.

Other traits like PU do not make up for not having DE – you can still have enough stealths without that trait, you can never have enough illusions without DE – unless using something like fully traited scepter+sword and minimum cooldown on phase retreat…

So... what if spear and trident on land?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Curunen.8729

Curunen.8729

For me, spear would be the mesmer equivalent of playing ele with things like RTL. It should lend a fun, fast paced mobile melee playstyle for suitable builds (for example shatter).

Slipstream could be horribly dangerous to friendlies if it accelerated in the same way as underwater – imagine on the wall of a keep or something… could have nasty unintended side effects.

Land animations for spear should be physical but elegant – kind of like a mix between mesmer greatsword and ranger greatsword.

As for vortex – I remember getting stuck under the map in Spirit Watch where there’s water near the orb, and I used vortex several times in the group fight, essentially on land – worked exactly as anticipated, pulling all enemies into it.

I think vortex is the one that should remain largely the same, and slipstream the one that should be changed – I wouldn’t want to run into a friendly mesmer’s slipstream only to get put well out of position. That would be very annoying.

Trident could be altered to a CC weapon – so the phantasm could maybe use net shot or something, aoe knockdown on number 5, blind and whirl could be adjusted to make them more unique. I like the auto as it is, but it could maybe be changed with the boons/conditions it provides.

Edit: regarding vortex – it could be differentiated from curtain pull further by the damage aspect. If anyone’s played any mass effect, compare it to singularity. Ok, singularity was significantly nerfed in ME2 and 3 compared to 1, but there were options to evolve the power for damaging targets in the radius and also the ability to detonate itself at the end of its duration.

I think vortex could function similarly – either dealing damage per second to enemies pulled into its radius, or exploding after 5 seconds dealing aoe damage.

I know it’s just a nonsense rumour, but thinking about it – what would the skills look like if they were converted for land use?

Spear is hands down my favourite mesmer weapon and I would probably never put it down if we could have it on land. I would imagine skills may look like:

Auto Attack – Remains the same, similar to ranger sword auto with evade on the third hit of the chain.
Feigned Surge – Principle remains the same, animation may need changing although the “superman” charge would look kind of cool on land. xD Might be a nice alternative to forward phase retreating.
iMariner – Could remain the same, kind of like iSwordsman just with multihit attack instead of the leap.
Slipstream – this is the main skill that could be a problem – very similar to temporal curtain. Not sure what it could be modified to.
Vortex – easy one, pbaoe pull, damage and etheral combo field. A nice alternative to focus pull and greatsword knockback.

Overall, an evasive, highly mobile melee weapon which could be a lot of fun.

Trident:

Auto attack – essentially the same thing as winds of chaos, just with music. :p
Blind – perfectly fine as it is.
Whirl – animation may need changing, but principle is fine.
iWhaler – give it a rifle but with the same attack.
Anchor – this would need changing, maybe some sort of aoe knockdown/root?

Anyway, do you feel any skills need radical changes to function well on land, or even just to carve out a different niche for each weapon so as not to overlap too much with current land weapons?

IoL and iDefender changes seem negligable, and iMage doesn’t seem like enough buff.

Don’t underestimate the power of 3, even 2 iMages. Especially with improved confusion duration + attack rate.

However iMage still needs fixing.

3 iMages at once is kind of rare, but I see your point that 2 of them can pack a punch with the increased duration and reduced attack cooldown.

Just reading the notes however is… underwhelming – I was hoping for an iMage overhaul rather than a straightforward numbers tweak.

The thing is, the only tree where you would want to go 5 points and not axe 1 point from somewhere else to max it is Inspiration – because the GM major traits are all kitten.

All the other 4 trees either have good GM traits (chaos, illusions, dom) – or in the case of duelling, so many good major traits that it’s often worth trying to get three of them in a full tree.

So the only way I would really be spending five points in any tree is x/x/x/5/x, which automatically dictates a phantasm build, so taking other necessary phantasm traits (so maybe x/3/x/5/x).

On the other hand, if we don’t go above 4 in any tree, then it is possible to do things like 4/4/0/3/3 – kind of weird, but I imagine a build can work with that trait spread.

2. Buy to play… fantastic.

3. Combat dynamics, action rpg style… fluid and still great fun to play.

4. Background lore… surprisingly I love it, it isn’t the usual fantasy trope nonsense (apart from dragons of course), and I think they have done an excellent job in fleshing out fairly unique races, regions and characters. I’ll be honest – the reason I bought the game in the first place was because of being able to play as an asura which at the time gave me the impression of super intelligent rabbits, and I like rabbits.

5. Fairly well managed horizontal progression… ok, ascended gear is stupid and there is too much grind for certain items when gearing up your character(s). However, I still think it maintains a reasonable level of allowing all players easy access to at least full exotic gear, with the remainder being cosmetic grind.

Now, I have attempted a PU build with full zerker gear, and even with some knights trinkets where and their but the results aren’t as impressive as expected. Now, I’m leaning towards a condition build. Is it possible to find a condition build with high mobility ( for escapes or to catch up to a target)* and provide condition “burst”?*

*Mobility does include phase retreating with staff.
*Condition thieves and some necromancers do have access to high condition burst.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Build-Vid-Chaotic-Perdition-WvW-PvP

Mobility is sick – between curtain, 1200 blink, phase retreat, and interrupts/torment, you can run away from most situations, and chase many situations.

Of course, PU is better in 1vX, so the difference with this build is knowing when to stand and fight and when to run to more advantageous terrain. The good thing is, if the situation gets too hot and you want to run away, you can.

Just goes to show how people still whining about mesmers have no clue what our traits actually do.

I get called PU whenever I play any condition Mesmer EXCEPT Pu. Whether that’s condi shatter, CI condi, or signet clone death. People are ridiculously ignorant.

Hehe, it is stupid.

What about a reversing tool for ascended?

And while Anet would be on that, would be appreciated a way to deal with Ascended rings, either salvage or trading merchant (something like you give 4-5 rings you don’t like like in exchange for one you want), instead of Destroy/sell to merchant

Sell rings for 5 laurels?

I would love that.

It’s the basics of knowing when to dodge, using the terrain to your advantage, knowing when to use Decoy, when to heal, when to Shatter for Distortion, using About Face and Phase Retreat, etc.

Admittingly, I used to use Mantra and/or Null Field but after ditching those and using Portal, I’ve learned to use more of the map rather than relying on utilities.

I just get more out of Portal for repositioning than I’d ever get with mantra or null field.

Playstyle preference. I’ll drop null field and use it like a poor man’s berserker stance so I can facesit someone on pt.

lol, I like that – “poor man’s berserker stance”. xD

Has a certain ring to it.

Is it OK if I skip the build video and go straight into what each skill does or do you guys still want to see me discussing the build itself?

I suppose you could merge the information in one video – so a summary of the build and then individual skill spotlights?

I dunno, not for me to say, whatever works best for you.

The difference between having shattered concentration and not having it when fighting something like an Ele is night and day.

I’m not good enough with arcane thievery to use it as a substitute – if you take torch trait it’s a good idea to take arcane thievery as a boon strip substitute because you’ve got extra help with condition cleanse from the torch.

Otherwise shattered concentration plus mantra of resolve is my preference – just makes it much, much easier to deal with boon heavy classes – especially elementalists.

Well, just for a bit of a laugh I thought I’d try 2/4/4/4/0 out – ideally it would be 0/4/4/6/0, but pvp amulet selection is kitten and without 2 points in domination my damage is not good enough.

I am honestly shocked how easy this is to play and survive. Ideally I would look to gear out for around 2600 armour to tank some hits in wvw.

Downside of course is that it takes longer to kill certain enemies, but for the most part you should get them to run away from you and not the other way round.
