I still use them when I run shatter, every little bit of burst helps. Fay is correct though it will reveal you while stealthed, which sucks hard, but air runes fire/air sigils and elasticity make for one hell of a mirror blade spike

Yeah, that could make for some seriously sick burst, although survival would be more difficult.

Hmm, decisions decisions…

I’ve ditched air runes after they killed me a few times.

If you’re stealthed and you get hit, the 6th bonus can proc and reveal you. This has killed me before, and I rather have that not happen.

Good point, that kind of sucks. :/

Bit fed up with traveler pigeonholing – like to try the theme of air sigils + air runes.

In addition to that, is anyone still using air runes with mirror heal? Seems a bit lackluster now – could do with ~1k more healing and ~5s more swiftness.

Hello frands! Vee Wee here, #1 Engi NA and world first rank 80!

Is Vee Wee the only one who doesn’t think very much of D/D Eles! They don’t do very much damage even with many stacks of might! Vee Wee thinks their only job is to be annoying pseudo bunkers and stack 25 might for anyone nearby! And their moves are really telegraphed and they’re the only class to have their moves telegraphed by sound! If you hear FEAR THE FIRES OF BULBASAUR, make sure to dodge the Burning Speed that’s going to come! Oh do you have a lot of burning! Well you can be sure Fire Grab is going to come next! If it is a 5v4 and the team with 5 is say more than 200 (arbitrary number) points in the lead, autobalance should force it to a 4v5 in favour of the losing team. No one in spectate be allowed to join the winning team until the points difference is say less than 100 (subject to change).

That would essentially punish people for winning.

Only if the teams are unbalanced in numbers – if it’s equal numbers then this doesn’t take effect.

In any case at least it would ensure reasonably “balanced” fights instead of one team whitewashing the other.

Your suggestion would make autobalance abuse easier and more prevalent than it currently is, since any one person in an even game would be able to force an autobalance at will.

Even resetting personal score to 0 upon entering spectate wouldn’t discourage people, since rank point earnings aren’t based solely on personal score anymore.

Would not be able to force autobalance unless there was a >200 point (or more, maybe 300) score difference – simply dropping out to spectate won’t force a player to switch unless there’s a significant difference, by which time the match should be over.

I agree it’s a poor band aid, but can you suggest something that would work better?

That is all more of a problem in pvp conquest which naturally favours melee or cqc play, although in wvw any ranged weapon user can sit on the edge of a group and pew pew outliers to death with no effort (talking medium/large groups).

This does not change the fact that skill in using ranged weapons in GW2 comes from kiting and positioning – actually dealing damage does not require much in the way of effort because of auto aim…

Conversely melee requires more effort to get in and deal the damage, but as you said – built in evades, blocks and so on on melee skills make it easier to avoid damage taken.

Switching between weapon sets is a given for versatile play – full ranged or full melee is a handicap depending on situation.

I don’t know why you mention doubling up on melee sets as if I personally do this – for the record I mostly play greatsword + sword/torch shatter so at least one ranged option, which happens to hit more than one target as well.

My belief is ranged combat is impossible to balance in this game because of one thing – tab targeting => no skill needed to aim ranged attacks.

Yes I know it’s not a shooter but here lies the problem. Then we either have:
- ranged skills too weak as in the past with combat strongly favouring melee
- ranged skills too strong with no skill required compared to melee

Ranged combat DOES require skill. It’s incredibly biased to say otherwise.

A ranged damage dealer has to be capable of keeping away from the enemy, which requires well timed snares, knock downs, immobilizes, etc to limit the enemy’s advance while simultaneously desperately avoiding any of the opponent’s control effects and trying to continuously run away without turning your back on the enemy so you can keep doing damage.

Melee counters this strategy with gap closing skills to get in close and utilize their own slows and control effects trying to keep the ranged fighter in melee range.

It’s called kiting. It’s in just about every RPG ever invented, and it’s the single most important skill a ranged fighter can have.

but if the ranged damage is close to the melee damage, or the ranged class is just as survivable, what excatly is gained by getting close? thats the problem, IF ranged is too powerful.
the melee has to do the exact same things that you say make the ranged skilled, except they do no damage when they arent doing it well.

I agree with the poster, that ranged damage basically has to be balanced by complex mechanics/set ups or perhaps more mechanics to block ranged damage. If succesful closing the gap mattered, i think you might have a point, but it really doesnt.

and this is also why we have this AMAZING, and seemingly COMPLETELY UNKNOWN third form of damage called CONDITIONS.

Which means, HIT EM ONCE, JUST ONCE, and time will deal with the rest.

Amazing concept is it not? Whoever thought up such a great “middle ground” form of damage between hitting many times in melee or many times at range must be a genius.

If only people could apply those conditions against ranged classes. Oh wait, THEY CAN.

How?

Condition Gear + block skill + Rune of the Guardian.
Any multi hitting skill – rekt by perma fire.
Any other skill – still rekt by perma fire.
Stop attacking to avoid perma fire – dealing no damage.

Conditions are part of the ranged dilemma – given many condition skills are cast at range with not easily noticeable animations. This isn’t just about ranger lonbow, but in general ranged skills vs melee skills and gap closing vs kiting.

How do you deal with rangers?

I don’t use reflects – a shame about mimic but such is life…

Anyway, as said – stealth evade, close distance (blink) and punch them hard in the face – put them on the back foot asap, maintain aggressive pressure. Alternatively block los with terrain.

If I get caught out at range by the gattling gun then it’s hard to get back into the fight – must get that opening advantage.

Trouble happens if they’re cqc condition tank spec, but then they likely won’t have 1500 longbow so it’s fine to move in and out of melee range.

While a little better than the previous pathing issues, I still think ileap needs further improvement in the future.

No skill compared to melee if both deal comparable damage, not no skill at all.
The melee user is under pressure to close the gap – the ranged user has to kite and pew pew reactively to maintain the gap. Personally I think the latter is much easier to do.

Anyway as I said, the problem is tab targeting – if this game had a crosshair and proper aiming mechanics for ranged weapons, it would be easier to balance.

But I am very biased against this game’s archaic targeting – maybe because I come from a background of fps/tps and action rpgs, all of which require manual aiming with weapons and skills. Maybe in GW3 they can finally do away with it instead of a half-kittened attempt at making it an “action” game with dodge mechanics and casting while moving.

Sad to say Adozu, but the GW2 community has proven they aren’t mature enough to pick their teams. So no, you shouldn’t be able to play with a friend if it means the game remains in it’s easily exploitable state that turns every match into a one sided point farm.

If the community can’t handle the ability to pick your teams without immediately exploiting the system then removing the aspects of the system is the only course of action to take, regardless of if it’d remove an aspect of the game that is actually encouraged.

It’s the case of a few bad kids ruining everyone else’s fun.

If entering a match part way through, I’ll join the losing team every. Single. Time.

It’s sad that so many players like to stack on the winning team or even worse force autobalance to do so.

I think it should simply not be allowed to choose the winning team.

Entering spectator mode at any point in the match and attempting to rejoin active play should force you to the losing team automatically – should be no choice in the matter.

If it is a 5v4 and the team with 5 is say more than 200 (arbitrary number) points in the lead, autobalance should force it to a 4v5 in favour of the losing team. No one in spectate be allowed to join the winning team until the points difference is say less than 100 (subject to change).

Most mechanically intensive profession?

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Curunen.8729

Curunen.8729

In terms of frequency of button pressing together with precise timing…

By the OPs definition, I would say Mantra Mesmer is the most mechanically intensive profession, since you have to know when to use your multiple mantras and watch the entire fight around you while still using your other abilities in between mantras at the right time along with just surviving and good positioning. Being able to weave mantras in between casting other abilities at the same time is no easy feat, especially when having to press 2-4 different buttons at the same time for almost the entire duration of the fight.

this has to be up at the top. Full mantra + interrupt traits for borderline crazy mechanical and skill intensive play.

Full traited mantra loadout is so kittening awkward – constantly charging, discharging at precisely the right time, multiple button presses together, on top of the usual effort required for “normal” play.

Ok the number of different buttons is less than a kit engi or ele, but the frequency of button use and precision required is insane – I can barely get my head around it.

I’m currently trying to figure out how to last/beat a cele d/d ele (in PvP, if that matters). TY!

The amount of pbaoes they can throw out makes it tough to stay on them with sword aa chain – sure can get the odd mind spike in, but not enough to mess up their game.

Shattered concentration is lovely against them – very satisfying to demolish those boon stacks.

The only moment that comes to mind is in soloq when I was stomping an ele on mid in skyhammer while someone was attempting to rez him. Basically he was going to be rezzed right before my stomp went off, so I popped diversion just before he rezzed which dazed the player rezzing him and the stomp went off without a hitch.

Bubble shield had such a cool animation and it gets replaced by a mediocre boon removal with a pathetic animation by comparison.

Only 2 solutions IMO:
- restore the bubble shield
- replace staff #4 with bubble shield (this might actually encourage me to use staff again)

By “bubble shield” do you mean the projectile reflect? And by “mediocre boon removal” are you referring to Mimic? Because it doesn’t even remove the boons. It just copies them from your target to yourself… doesn’t strip from the target.

I would love Staff 4 to be the old Mimic. Chaos Storm is really powerful though, especially in a zerg. Maybe a trait to make Chaos Storm also reflect projectiles?

My mistake – I really haven’t read or played much recently and I was so disgusted with the loss of bubble shield that I refused to use mimic at all now.

Just had an incident earlier – was pugging hotjoin – on the back foot in clocktower – forced reteat blink out the window – moving around corner of ramparts – a wild thief appears and opens – Oh kitten! :o

Now at ~10% health, panic mode – looking down at skill bar somehow pretty much everything is on cooldown (sigh), not enough endurance – looks like game over… except for one thing – diversion is still up! Thief goes in for the kill -> STOP – Shattertime! :p

Interrupt buys a moment for decoy and mirror blade and mind wrack to just about come back up -> counterburst, finish (and then flee like Roadrunner to heal up!).

Reminded me how much I love Diversion – such a multipurpose skill and so often the difference between life or death of yourself or allies.

I’m sure you lot must have some funny scenarios to share where Diversion has been the lifesaver – let’s hear them!

BTW: the haters: it´s a sign for good work – and as long they are so obviously stupid the whole community knows “he just hates without reason”. Not all PvP player are bad or social fools, lot of nice people out there. But also lot people who should realy try to get better they are way not as good as they believe and in combination with their beaviour just embarrassing. “good” is btw no total word. The most player with fame always think they have did it – they are the best – actually the people who never think they are the best are those with the highest chance to really become the best and also the people who don´t have to prove something in stupid duels in a game which is absolutely not made for 1on1 comparisons.
If there is one thing i ´ve learned in 10 years of pvp games than, that u will never be the best – alyways someone better out there and even u are this person u will someday find someone who maybe never did any tournements or special things who will beat you without really know who u are. IN my view some of the best players in GW2 are hided in the shadows yet. I see them sometimes in WvW or in hotjoins givin me the hell of a fight. So i really don´t know why people say hotjoin is for losers.

How I’m feeling now = meh.

Needs half a dozen radical patches over the next few years to get my attention.

I would still be playing exactly the same gs+sw/t shatter build as before, only real difference is ileap change. Would be even more inferior to gs/staff with ielasticity, and scepter/staff condition builds. Not that I care about being inferior – still would be fun challenge to play, but needs a proper thorough shake up of skills/traits to bring some freshness into these builds. It’s just completely stale otherwise.

Skill Bar: Patch Notes (Updated)

Curunen.8729

Nothing that makes me feel like playing again.

Scepter torment AA and iElasticity working on staff clones – PU condition builds will now be absolutely more prevalent and disgusting to fight. At least shatter condition will be helped.

ileap buff is ok, but I take it there will be an ICD on Swap or something to balance this? And the problem here is the clone blinking at the target means easy to instantly kill and lose the Swap. I dunno – nice to see it finally changes to get rid of horrible pathing, but still encouraging mindless 3->3 without waiting/baiting.

Mind stab buff is nice. Don’t expect iwarden fix to work.

So in a nutshell – PU condition and shatter condition buffed, ileap partially remedied, nothing else noteworthy?

iLeap will work as it is today with the same short delay between leap/swap. Karl demonstrated it on stream.

Mantra AoE for pain/daze, Mimic re-work, Maimed torment gets 6s base versus 4 and triumphant distortion grants phantasms 1s distortion on every summon in addition to the current functionality.

I didn’t watch the stream, that’s interesting. Guess there will be a lot of moaning from opponents now.

Mimic re work doesn’t fill me with excitement. Nice for mantras, I admit I’m biased against them, but that could open up some interesting builds.
MtD is ok buff, was needed. Triumphant distortion… well that doesn’t do anything for me.

I dunno – a few decent changes, nothing that makes me go “OH WOW I really want to play!”. I’m glad actually because I don’t want to get sucked into it again.

Hopefully Anet realises the beauty of the mesmer class they have created, and how unique it has the potential to be – for any kind of class in any kind of rpg or mmo – and that they manage to bring it into a good position in the future.

EDIT: Nice ideas, apologies I can’t give further thought to the conversation – have decided to quit GW2 for the time being and if I ever play again I doubt it will be anything more than casual Living Story.

Resilient Illusions – all clones gain 3s aegis and 3s protection on summon. Does not affect phantasms.

Thoughts? Overpowered? Useless? Need tweaking?

Obviously proper placement is the challenge – needs to be high enough up a trait tree to keep it accessible to the builds that can benefit, but not easily accessible to builds that would be come too powerful.

This would negatively impact clone death condition builds, as it goes against what they try to achieve so would be of no benefit. It should also be of no benefit to phantasm builds – because it doesn’t affect phantasms.

Would it be sufficient for shatter builds clone survival in large fights?

Would it help with the ileap -> swap clone by giving it higher life expectancy?

I really don’t know – just throwing this one out there to see what any of you lot think.

Where could it go in trait trees? Illusions > master?

Edit: Given Anet’s views the last time they discussed Mesmer were (whether accurate or inaccurate) about resource maintenance and setup against things like aoe and cleave, I wondered what they could be considering in the background. Not saying I agree with this view at all, but if they’re going to go in that direction then we may as well think about it.

From all I keep seeing related to this kind of stuff, and of course we don’t know how much or little truth there is in any of it – to me it seems as if many of the talented people should just abandon the sinking ship, start their own studio and create their own games.

If SM is that far off track/out of touch/delusional, then short of a miracle in understanding happening in their minds, GW2 has absolutely no hope.

pretty easy to kill, just go for the one that isn’t standing still auto attacking you.

By the time you find the right one, you’re downed.
The deception is just too strong in this game. Mesmer was the easiest class I played in PvP, simply because you can do what you want to, most opponents will just be distracted with your clones, spending the she fight trying to target the real you.

Mesmers are a disease in PvP

I’m usually polite and never usually one to say this, but in this case…

…L2P.

Anyone who’s played this game for more than 5 minutes (slight exaggeration for effect) will rarely be deceived.

Anyone who’s actually good will never be deceived.

Anyone who is deceived needs to get better.

There’s only one single problem when fighting Mesmer – and that is fluent use of target cycling – pressing the right buttons to reselect the correct target. I will accept this part can be annoying because of the targeting system – but again it’s just a matter of getting used to it. If I can get used to the targeting system in GW2 (and I used to seriously struggle with the tab targeting, being used to games with crosshairs), then anyone can.

Anyone who can’t spot the real Mesmer in ~ 1 second needs to L2P.

You must have been playing Mesmer for so long you can’t even remember how it is to fight against one. The targeting and untargeting mechanic is sick broken, especially in a PvP scneario. The advantage to the Mesmer is huge.
You probably couldn’t win against one, that’s why you joined the band

What nonsense – I’ve fought and killed plenty of mesmers, good and bad ones and everything in between. And not only on my Mesmer, but also as ranger! And I barely have any playtime on ranger compared to amount of playtime on mesmer.

Seriously, learn to play. I already partly agreed with you that the targeting system is bad, but you can do far better with it than you’re making out is possible.

Maybe you should spend a lot of time playing as a mesmer, because then you’ll find it 10 times easier to fight against any Mesmer. You learn how they move, what skills to expect and when, and all the little subtle tells that make fighting them no more difficult than any other class.

If you have that much trouble against a Mesmer, I’d shudder to think how you feel about fighting a good thief, warrior, or ele at the very least.

Also funny you’re directing this at me when many other players in this thread are telling you exactly the same thing…
