…being in the percussion section in an orchestra, but not playing the timpani – you may be able to use a variety of utility instruments if they’re needed in a piece – too bad that most of the time you have nothing to do and are almost never recognised, while the strings/brass/woodwind all get on with it.
In all seriousness what we do need is ranged direct damage main hand. I don’t care if that is a dagger or a pistol or something else altogher – scepter is just not good enough at direct damage. The greatsword is great, but it does become a bit monotonous.
Would also be nice to have more mainhand melee options – seeing how mainhand sword has been well and truly kittened over the last year or so.
Fans of course thematically fit (as it’s in the confounded class portrait), although I’m not sure whether they should be an entirely new weapon or simply skins able to be used on a focus. If fans were added, I would almost certainly use sword+fan or similar.
+1 for fans but can i get those without a phant or clone skill and can i get them to deal 2x the damage of any other weapon set we have?
also can i get a new class mechanic and remove all our clones and phants to utility status… and then buff all our other weapon damages and uses to compensate for what the devs considered to be a good idea being resigned to where it belonged all along?
I know this is extremely unlikely, but… hell yes!
Would love to swap phantasm summoning skills out for other non-illusion options at the very least.
I can’t imagine clones ever being removed from weapon sets as would have to create some entirely new alternate option to the shatter mechanic.
Maybe if we ever get profession branching/sub classes?

MH focus for dual wielding Anomalies would be my top pick, in any case.
yesterday he told me hey,now we on the same boat mate,but you the one who rowing.
Rofl.
:D Haha, love it!
I think you wrote the title wrong mate… The title should be “Increasing Condi Duration needs a cap”
This.
“Skritt burglars are no longer affected by Polymorph Moa.”
I’m late, but I wanted to add this to the list because it’s borderline hilarious/sad. ANet please share with us the stats about how many times has this been “exploited” in game that required priority fixing over the list of game breaking bugs mesmer has. Please.
Those skritt burglars must have really hated Moa, more than minionmancers.
Here we go again.
Off the top of my head, in no particular order, I would like:
- land Spear
- 2H Hammer
- MH Focus
- MH and OH Daggers
- MH Pistol
- 2H Bow (short or long), as a melee weapon
Yes, absolutely.
And as said, add to that gear tagging and hotkey swap or something.
Regarding the fee for an arena – people seem to forget that you’re not earning big money if doing 1v1 regularly, therefore the cost is significant.
And subsequently to afford it you’d have to run some pve or wvw content – which, surprise surprise, you need gear for – which costs gold for the usual full exotic at the very least, plus food…
I stand by my statement – custom arenas are NOT the solution in their current form.
Obsidian Sanctum is the best thing we have for duelling, however it’s not exactly Piccadilly Circus in rush hour… you spend a lot of time standing around waiting for the handful of players that turn up every now and then.
Yes please, would really like an organised duelling feature – city based arenas or open world (of course with the ability to opt out and ignore for haters).
Custom arenas are not the solution – I am certainly not willing to pay a fairly large amount of gold every so often, just for the opportunity to duel. If this is the case, players should be “taxed” in every area of the game to support the servers.
Also custom arenas have a limited amount of population and too much waiting time.
Obsidian sanctum is… ok, but kind of like the underground fight club.
Always so much hate whenever duelling is mentioned – I really don’t understand why players don’t like this feature, especially if there is the option in the menu to block/ignore all incoming duel requests.
As for rude whispers – well that feature already exists – right click, block. Simple as that.
Yeah, nice idea to merge the glamour and manipulation traits.
On another note, blinding befuddlement needs to have that ICD removed.
Boon strip is great and all – the thing that bothers me is, of you don’t play that exact build, you’re not helping.
Unlike some other classes which can choose from several builds, all of which can be accommodated in team play.
With Mesmer it’s play 4/4/0/0/6, most likely with gs+staff and use portal… or gtfo.
One thing to note though is that only 2 classes at the moment in pvp that are able to fill multiple roles in top tier is elementalist and warrior and have multiple viable builds for those roles.
Every other class though suffers the same as mesmer. That’s an issue moreso with the pvp conquest system and balance rather the limitation of mesmer.
If you play guardian, engi, necro, ranger, thief, mesmer – you may be able to adjust traits a little bit here and there, but your role will always be the same and for the most part the utilities will usually be the same which is essentially the same as having only one build that works in reality. This is also why only a few builds work for those classes in top tier (with ranger and mesmer being exceptions, they really only have 1 viable build in top tier – spirit and shatter). This is, again an issue with the nature of gw2 pvp that will never be changed.
Fair enough, it is a core problem with gw2 pvp structure.
I have not played all the classes to a good skill level, so my judgement on builds available is not through experience but just going by things I’ve read/watched and fought against – in my mind I thought engi, ranger and thief at least had the choice of different weapon sets and build specifics – some obviously better than others but still viable – compared to mesmer with fixed weapon choice, fixed trait choice, fixed gear choice, and largely fixed utility choice.
I don’t know enough about necro to comment on that, being the only class I have not played, although I am aware it is in a bad position in the pvp game state.
Phase retreat, blink and portal are the only true three reliable land mobility skills available, which can all be used in or out of combat.
Out of those, blink is usually 30s for many builds, portal is 3 times that and phase retreat is only available if you use the staff.
As said, distortion is not mobility, stealth is not mobility – at best a method of positional advantage, stun breaks are not mobility, ileap… well we all know how good that is for “mobility”.
In what way can this ever compare to thief mobility?
If you said underwater, then yes I can get behind that – feigned surge and slipstream, especially traited, plus portal can allow you to escape almost anything underwater. Unfortunately that’s not very useful outside of wvw.
The day Anet finally decides to nerf/revert PU will be the day that people finally wake up and realise mesmers are nowhere near as dangerous in 1v1 as they are assumed to be, at least not anymore as they used to be in the past.
Regarding pure 1v1, p/d condition thief takes the cake, but in any case there are a lot of monsters out there…
A well played condi engi would smack a p/d thief no problem. Or anything with moderate condi cleanse.
Thief can just run and not be caught tbh, though I agree there are other monster 1v1 builds out there.
Maining a class which already suffers from below average condi removal, I find p/d condition thieves the worst to deal with.
/quote]
This Mesmer Q.Q is a joke these days, they see a few “pro” thieves and suddenly thief is viable and OP. Mesmer can blow up a thief and be just as slippery, I’ve watched it in videos and spectating and been a victim of it since launch while experiencing a multitude of nerfs, sorry if I have zero sympathy for your class.i m giving answer with assuming u read my above posts..
are u trolling or what?
sorry, no need answer pls ignore it will better.. cuz i am not capable enough to discuss things with u i cant reach your iq..
—————————————————————————-Its funny that you and countless others think you’re not good compared to other classes. Seriously, did I miss the opposite day memo?
Maybe you should get better, that’s all I hear when thief gets nerfed and we’ve been nerfed hard numerous times with zero compensation. So no, not trolling. If I didn’t enjoy the playstyle of thief so much I’d gladly trade mine in for a Mesmer, at least I get globally known skills that do something.
Want to trade null field for shadow refuge? Pretty please? I dislike AoE and being CC’ed out of it while making it near impossible to stealth downed allies when they pretend their AA is going to do something. What other support skills do you dislike? I’ll probably trade ya.
Blimey, I’d swap null field for shadow refuge in a heartbeat – I’d even toss in up to 100 gold extra!
Funny, if I didn’t enjoy mesmer so much, I’d gladly switch to thief as a main.
The day Anet finally decides to nerf/revert PU will be the day that people finally wake up and realise mesmers are nowhere near as dangerous in 1v1 as they are assumed to be, at least not anymore as they used to be in the past.
Regarding pure 1v1, p/d condition thief takes the cake, but in any case there are a lot of monsters out there…
I can understand the retaliation split for wvw/pvp/pve because it is based on hit and did massive damage against AoE skills, but the confusion nerf imo didn’t seem necessary in the way they did it. It should of been off of skills except AA imo.
In other words, confusion would make using anything but AA very painful (bring the old numbers back). Let it deal the high damage on non-aa skill/action activation but lower its duration so its a short window of essentially skill blocking. So to recap
1. Lower the duration of all confusion applications (unless they are already significantly low).
2. Remove the split damage from pvp/wvw and Pve. It would do the same as pve damage.
3. No longer activates on auto attack chains.That way it can be powerful yet manageable by just letting it expire incase you can’t condi cleanse it.
I really like this idea.
Confusion could be scaled up to do heavy damage on skill use, but ignore auto attacks – would have less people whinging about it and not knowing how to deal with it. In this form it would exist more as a skill denial option – similar to daze in a way, except you have a choice – cast and eat damage, cleanse, or auto attack/wait till it wears off.
I suggested this, at least for mesmers, sometime last year.
Cant remember the skills, but think I know one of them was:
Singularity – land based version of vortex – spear #5.
ground targeted, press button once casts the singularity which slows enemy movement (maybe do this by applying chill?) in a fixed radius, applies weakness and vulnerability.
While active (5s duration), option to Implode (press button again) – pulls up to 5 enemies towards its centre, dealing aoe damage. Implode is a blast finisher and has a 0.5s ICD after Singularity, before being able to cast.
Cooldown on singularity, something like 25s. Affected by reflection trait.
Idea then is for focus+focus to be a crowd control set.
Best?
Initiative and Adrenaline, by far.
Most fun/interesting?
Illusions/shatters, engi tool kits, ele attunements.
Personally for this to fit into the high skill cap Mesmer PvP meta I would swap staff for an offhand torch.
Stealth is OP.
Surely you mean take off hand focus – after all, we are the masters of RNG so you want skills that may or may not work – unpredictability will wrong foot opponents and win the fight.
Edit: yes, despite staff being too powerful, it has a vital role in this build.
Boon strip is great and all – the thing that bothers me is, of you don’t play that exact build, you’re not helping.

It only summons a clone when you have a target, otherwise you just blink and purple buttery fly.
This is an unintended bug.
Decoy likewise will be fixed to require a target.

…
;)
delete you mesmer……save a slot. you’ll thank me later
+10000
Don’t waste your time on this class.
Next patch will nerf/break something for Mesmer again, guaranteed.
“Phase Retreat now cannot cast without a target.”
…after all, it does summon a clone.
You can quote me on this one in 6 to 12 months.
(edited by Curunen.8729)
Anet “fixed” every single skill of sword/focus since release. Some of them twice! What do you think a mesmers life is like?
I wish they would go back and unfix them – I liked it better when they were “broken”. :p
On a serious note – Sword+focus, such an iconic set… I realise scepter is the original counterpart to focus, but for mesmer, sword+focus feels more thematically “right” – ie, duelling with a straight sword and a fan – elegant and sophisticated, scholar’s weapons.
A shame that this set has been “fixed” so many times.
Yeah, since travelers (and speed runes) do flat 25%, there’s not much point in that method of wasting heals to proc swiftness anymore.
See pic
….
That player obviously hasn’t faced a true OP build like the one in this thread yet.
I dread every further patch.
I constantly feel like I have to put a lot of effort in to achieve a minimum standard, in any game mode.
I feel pressured to use certain weapon sets and builds.
I do not feel useful everywhere.
I wish portal and veil did not exist – delete them from the game – suddenly a new light would be shed on pvp and wvw mesmer roles.
I wish PU would finally get nerfed back to how it used to be, with less boon uptime (2s refresh would be better) so people’s judgement about the class is not affected by one trait.
I wish main hand sword and focus were returned to their former glory – or fixed at the very least.
I wish we had a kittening direct damage ranged mainhand, especially considering scepter #2 got changed from direct damage to half torment…
I wish we were not forced into using traveler runes for the movement speed (another reason why focus needs to be fixed).
…
I would be happy with minimal condition removal, if all the above were sorted out.
Yeah come to think of it, I’d likely have not bought the game in the first place.
I’m very tempted to add this to the top of the build list with the title ‘The only viable build’ but I don’t think the humour would be appreciated by anyone other than us m3sm0rz… still funny
well done
Do it – you know you want to.
Well I actually started on thief, back on pre release – only moved on to mesmer after a few weeks of play.
I would probably still roll mesmer, because I like the theme.
Second favourite would now be melee ranger (GS+Sw/D) – but being a main only type of person, I have gone and deleted my ranger (I don’t like having alts) and will probably only make a new one once we get playable Tengu or something.
Hmm, that is a very good point – I could not see up to that that high skill ceiling.
You’ve got to admit though phase retreat is too powerful when you aren’t downed, but I see you have tried to make the build more balanced by not traiting for a lower cooldown.
Excellent work!
Vee Wee was the first – does this even need to be questioned?
Blackdevil/doiid what build type did they buf?
The reroll build
I tried this build but it was much too powerful and I had to go back to my previous build.
Just didn’t feel right being that powerful.
Desperate Decoy is OP.
I have a suggestion to improve your build – drop those 2 points in duelling (because critical infusion is also OP, even with your 9% crit chance) and put 4 points in illusions.
Take blinding befuddlement.
Drop staff and take scepter+pistol.
Swap Confusing Cry for Dazzling Glamours – because you do have portal after all.
That’s much more balanced.
I just ignore them tbh, both keys and chests, unless I somehow get a key through normal playing.
They may as well not exist at all, for all I care – same goes for the chance of a precursor from the MF.
Who cares, honestly?
Yeah Mesmer is in a bad place, and thats why a few of these tear-filled threads are good to make sure the devs notice, but how many of you here play the class for a statistical advantage over other classes?
…
Exactly. We play the class because it’s fun, everything else is noise.
Yes, I certainly play because it’s the most fun and I enjoy the flavour, not for a stat advantage.
However when there is a definite statistical disadvantage with all but a few builds, you have to question what is going on.
Edit: for the record, I will continue to play sword+torch shatter through this tunnel and come out the other side, despite being inferior to gs/staff, because I enjoy it the most.
(edited by Curunen.8729)
Thrown out of the PVE dungeon meta, extremely fringe in the PvP meta, relegated to veil duty since forever in wvw. Mesmer is complete trash and I can’t believe I sold 2000g worth of strength runes while they were a lot cheaper to craft mine. It’s literally a piece of **** class that leeches off everyone else’s success.
Then what the hell are you doing on these forums if it’s all in such crap?
I’m sick of all this forum whining!
This class is a lot of fun and it can still work very well, just because you may not like that people like the class because of veil or some other kitten doesn’t mean the class is kitten. Don’t play it if you don’t like and stop posting here.
All this whining is counterproductive. People won’t play mesmer because everyone on forums says the class is kitten, the amount of mesmers will decrease and Anet will just stop caring about mesmer. (I know I’ll get flamed for this part) This class does have issues, but it isn’t in such kitten like you guys say it is!
It’s perfectly fine in PvE, the sword ‘fix’ did not effect the s/s + s/f mesmer at all. iLeap is almost never used in PvE.
WvW – We are great for utility, we lack AOE, so what? PU condi, PU power, staff + gs shatter, staff + gs lockdown are all great for roaming.
PvP – Helseth, Misha, Sensotix, Supcutie…
I’m done with forums..
Chill, no need to go down that route.
Yes there are still a few “viable” builds, but this class is held up on a knife edge, namely:
- PU (the trait specifically, which is still one of the few things that does need the boons toned down)
- phase retreat
- shattered concentration
- portal
- veil
In my opinion that is all that is keeping things supported to compete on the same platform as other classes. Remove any one of those things and then we are objectively inferior.
There is not good build diversity at the moment – and unless it is discussed on the forums nothing will happen. Nothing may happen for a long time anyway, but that’s beside the point.
My god this is fantastic.
I accept gw2 story for what it is – lighthearted fantasy. Yes there are occasionally some heavy themes, but overall it is still lighthearted and easily accessed by players of all ages and backgrounds.
Because of this I do not expect writing, dialogue or characters along the lines of something from deus ex or mass effect among other things.
I enjoy the characters for what they are and IMO it works fairly well.
@Jurica – yeah I know why it doesn’t work well anymore, you don’t need to explain to me.
Melee uses to work much better than it does now in pvp – when blurred frenzy was invuln, mind spike did not have reduced damage when removing a boon and ileap was more useable than it is now. Nevermind when into the void had no ICD and iwarden worked all the time. More that I probably forget to mention.
GS+staff was a weird, niche set, which has only taken centre stage because everything else is not good enough anymore. Staff + sword/focus was a great set.
What I’m saying is sword was “better” or rather more favourable than GS – but now that both sword and focus have been kittened sideways that is no longer the case.
Mesmer melee is in the state it’s in now thanks to some crude nerfing decisions, which for me is not acceptable.
Agreed 100%.
Excellent work by the VAs – really makes me care about the characters.
Taimi is as usual best of the bunch – but I’m biased in that way.
Even if we are nothing but a utility bot (which I strongly do not think we are) so what? Every class has a role and if you don’t like this one, then choose a different class.
@Half – By ‘highest DPS weapon’ you mean sword? I assume that because of the comment about how it works only 60% of the time. Why do you still use sword in PvP? Greatsword + Staff has always been a much better choice, and never so like after the sword nerf. Give it a shot. Also, greatsword has A LOT more DPS than sword.
I think the “60%” of the time was referring to iwarden and the focus.
Sword should be fixed so that it is on par with gs/staff. Sword does do more dps than GS, being a melee weapon, although GS allows you to kite much more easily in pvp and therefore deal damage more effectively in the long run because you can keep up the attack pressure – whereas with sword you have to constantly duck in and out of melee.
Sword+focus went from one of the best sets we had to mediocre. It’s not fair to say to someone just play gs+staff because it is better – or rather because there’s barely any choice in the matter…
This is definitely one of the best LS updates, and certainly my favourite.
I don’t care how linear it is
- the landscape and visuals are stunning. Seriously. Stunning. I don’t know who is on the team responsible for creating the map/atmosphere, but they are consistently brilliant
- the npcs are fun to engage with
- the character dialogue is as usual fantastic
- the way each story segment leads you through the map is great
I will say I’ve not been keen on the huge focus on LS, feeling that effort could be better spent elsewhere in the game. However I no longer hold that view and tip my hat to the excellent work so far in LS2.
Rudimentary creatures of blood and flesh…
Thank you, this is appreciated.
Uneventful, as usual.
A note on playing, because I know this might not make much sense how it can work:
Ground Targeting
To Blink:
1. Toggle Off combat mode (cursor appears in exactly the same position every time – in the centre of the screen)
2. Move cursor and hold Mouse5
3. Release and Toggle On combat mode.
At speed it is “F” -> move cursor, press mouse5 -> "F.
Sounds clunky but it really is very smooth and easy after a while. Same applies for all ground targeted abilities that you don’t want to cast near to you.
Alternatively sometimes it is easier to simply move the crosshair to position for ground targeting and press the button without toggling On/Off – depends on the situation and terrain (ie if you’re looking up towards a blink spot or looking down at the ground).
You can see why for some classes (engis, necros) this might not be a good way to play because of the quantity of ground targeted abilities – those are the only two classes I have barely played so can’t comment on them.
I can say this works for all of the remaining 6 classes, though some are easier than others depending on the amount of ground targeted abilities in your build.
Enemy Targeting
Hit X and then hold shift and press X, X, X… until you cycle to what you want. Z if you go to far.
Alternatively hit Toggle Off and use left click to select target, then Toggle On.
Use C to drop target! Incredibly useful button. I play with promote target and most of the time auto target – because I don’t use any skills in my builds that require auto target to be off for mobility (I said I rarely use staff anymore) – for example ranger or warrior leaps. If I’m playing a build or class that needs that I’ll turn auto target off – and I do do this with melee ranger for example.
About Face
As you can see I don’t have a keybind for about face, because I haven’t used staff for a while and couldn’t be kittened to think about which key to use.
If you want to try to forward phase retreat, the best method I thought of using this is
1. Toggle Off combat mode
2. Do the about turn routine
3. Toggle On combat mode
This is pretty clunky, but who knows – you might figure out a fantastic keybind for it.
Alternatively simply flick the mouse to 180 the camera and hit right click – requires good wrist action and is not as accurate as using about face, but still useable.
Camera panning
Simply hold either shift or alt (depends which finger you feel like using at the time) and move the camera. If combat mode is On, your character will snap to the new direction once you release Free Camera (because right click is held).
Finally, I know this is a tl;dr type of post, but I wanted to share it because I don’t think I know anyone who uses this kind of system, and it might help players who hate holding right click. There are obvious downsides, which is what balances out this method – but I believe I have been able to salvage enough from using it to play skillfully and still have the main positive benefit – no finger strain from right click. I would rather quit the game than be forced to play by holding right click anymore.
I am sharing the system I use because it might help other players, but to be absolutely clear there are definite negatives and positives to it. It won’t work for everyone but if it helps to draw some inspiration from then all is good.
Important note to be aware of before you read anything I post below:
I use combat mode to avoid RSI with holding right click (medical reasons – my fingers are quite sensitive) which has one serious flaw – About Face does not work while combat mode is active.
There is a work around as you’ll see below, but in any case more accurately I haven’t found an easy key combination to About Face yet. This directly impacts the ability to forward phase retreat.
Fortunately I don’t use staff nowadays so haven’t bothered to sort it out. But if you do use staff, then what I use may work for you if you can figure out the problem of About Face. If you have excellent wrist technique, you can of course manually flick the camera around 180 degrees, which is quite simple when you don’t have to hold right click.
For everything else I have found work arounds, as you’ll see below.
The most important keybind when using combat mode is Toggle On/Off. It is absolutely essential – you cannot play properly without being fluent with Toggle On/Off because it is crucial for ground targeted abilities and manual targeting as well as sometimes camera panning (although I have an alternate solution for that as well).
I should also say I made a small edit to the autohotkey file to enable two keybinds for Toggle On/Off – this simply allows me to have one button on the keyboard and one on the mouse – because you’ll be using it fairly frequently and I like to distribute the load between both hands to avoid any strain.
In addition to this I also swapped Caps Lock and LCtrl keys (mapped them to each other) while in game, and assigned “F” to “Pause” – because “F” is my primary Toggle On/Off button which means I cannot use it in chat – before I did this I had a big problem typing words with the letter “F” in them!
Now that that is all said, on to the keybinds. These keybinds are mesmer specific and I change certain keys if playing a different class:
Toggle combat mode on/off – F and Mouse4 (Back Thumb Mouse Button)
Weapon skills
1 -> Left Click (5)
2 -> Right Click (6)
3 -> Shift+Left Click (E) – I almost always press E
4 -> Shift+Right Click ( R) – I almost always press R
5 -> Shift+Mouse5 (Forward Thumb Mouse Button)
Heal -> Q
Utils:
7 -> Mouse5 (Forward Thumb Mouse Button) – This is almost always Blink
8 -> Shift+E – usually condition removal, portal, veil etc
9 -> Shift+R – always Decoy
Elite -> Shift+F
Shatters -> 1, 2, 3, 4
Targeting:
Nearest Enemy -> X
Next Enemy -> Shift+X
Previous Enemy -> Shift+Z (don’t need to use this too often anyway)
Call Target -> V
Take Target -> Shift+Mouse4 (Back Thumb Mouse Button)
Lock Autotarget -> C – this is really a Drop Target button!
Movement:
Forward/Back/StrafeLeft/StrafeRight -> WSAD
Dodge -> Spacebar
Jump -> LCtrl (remember this is in Caps Lock position because I swap them)
Auto Run -> Shift + Spacebar
Swim Up -> Spacebar
Swim Down -> LCtrl
Dodge Underwater -> G (I don’t like this and will change it – but I rarely need to use it anyway).
Misc:
Interact -> Tab
Map -> T
Stow weapon -> Z and ` (button to the left of 1). I stow/unstow a lot so like having two options to stretch the fingers.
Free Camera -> Shift and Alt (two separate binds). I can hold either shift or alt to pan the camera around while combat mode is active.
Mouse wheel binds if combat mode is On:
Scroll Forward -> Swap Weapon
Scroll Backward -> Swap Weapon
Shift + Scroll Forward -> Zoom Camera In
Shift + Scroll Backward -> Zoom Camera Out
Middle Mouse Button -> Swap Weapon
Mouse wheel binds if combat mode is Off:
Scroll Forward -> Zoom Camera In
Scroll Backward -> Zoom Camera Out
Middle Mouse Button -> Swap Weapon
That should cover all the important ones (continued in next post)…
