Perhaps those people should direct their anger at the people responsible: ANet. They made map-wide coordination required, while simultaneously forcing people to grind out XP doing nothing useful, just so they can reach the point where they can do the map-wide events.

Map wide coordination is not required for Meta events.

Uh, then you are not ready for the expansion then.

In an hour I (and pretty much all of my guildies across two guilds) can

1. Complete 9 fractal for all fractal dailies
2. Or Complete Vale Guardian + Gorseval or Gorseval + Sabetha, some group can finish all 3 within the hour.
3. Or max out two tier 1 mastery tracks or a tier 2 mastery track
4. Or do two Vine wraths and subsequent events
5. Or do Tequatl
6. Or Finish a 1/4 of HoT storyline
7. the list goes on etc..

Maybe if you play casually then you shouldn’t expect to do what non-casuals can accomplish. It doesn’t matter which game, it doesn’t matter which meta. It’s the the game’s problem, looks like it’s personal problem on how to effectively handle time. Just don’t expect the game to hand you everything.

Do you realize that NOTHING you mentioned has anything to do with the topic I was addressing? We’re talking about HoT masteries, and I was specifically saying you couldn’t get through half of the first HoT mastery in an hour, and you need that mastery in order to continue. Now, I may be wrong in my numbers, but it seems roughly correct.

You should try to have at least a passing understanding of the topic before replying.

And can you not accomplish something in GW2 in an hour?

False.

All you can accomplish in an hour is get roughly halfway through the first mastery, which is required before you can even move to the next step in the storyline.

So then how do you make content harder without it being harder?

It’s not “harder” that’s the problem. Or, at least not much more than a small part of it. It’s the walled-off, the gated, the impossible maps, extreme overage on events, etc.

Harder isn’t the problem. It’s PART of the problem. Put all those together and it becomes not a nice game any more.

Give us “hard mode”. Give us very difficult encounters, raids, and tougher dungeons. But, don’t make the storyline-required content nearly impossible to complete without jumping through the aforementioned issues.

Curious why are casuals always considered to be people that don’t want any sort of challenge from a game. I always thought casuals were just people that only got to play a certain/specific amount of time for the day/week???? I am confuzzled…..

I would say casuals are people who want to be able to play at their own pace, without being forced into a box. Difficult or easy content is irrelevant. Even impossible or nearly impossible (to them) content isn’t a game-breaker.

Casuals also TEND towards solo play. Perhaps casuals could be thought of as anything other than killers on Bartle’s Gamer Psychology grid.

I myself am an achiever, but both explorers and socializers, it seems to me, would be considered “casual”. Being an achiever, not being able to finish the story is a game-breaker. Now, I’m not talking about the difficulties of combat. One expects those every so often. But, when you can’t find your way through the maze even after you’ve been through it, or you’re repeatedly gated, or you are dependent upon someone else, that’s not casual.

Explorers and Socializers probably have different definitions of casual. But, Killers aren’t casual.

NOTE: Not all gamers are going to fit neatly into any scheme of partitioning. So, my comments on achievers are really mostly about me, and my comments on the other three should be taken with a heavy grain of salt.

Also one would wonder what player friendliness has to do with the game’s difficulty.

When the game is more difficult, people ask more questions. If the people there don’t reply (because they’re not friendly enough), then that affects the difficulty even more. When other people turn off chat because nobody is helping anyhow, that makes it even more difficult.

So, yeah, it affects difficulty quite a bit.

They advertised the friendliest community before the game launch? I didn’t see that posted anywhere.
In fact – it was a horn they started tooting about 1 year after GW2’s release.

Guess you should have followed the game pre-launch better buddy.

Where did I say anything about before game launch? They touted it after launch as a way to draw more people in. And, they claimed the reason was because they designed the game that way. (Both of which were true, IMO, but that’s a different debate.)

Nope, it makes zero sense. It’s a very bad anology for a whole host of reasons, such as the fact that buying a video game expansion and running into a burning building simply don’t carry the same risk. This alone makes it a very bad attempt at analogy.

Actually, in logic there is a valid negation argument known as reductio ad absurdum (reduce the argument to an absurd level). So that, by itself, doesn’t invalidate the argument.

On the other hand, the rest of your post does.

Well many don’t post here as they are seldom replied to by anyone in power. That being said, Reddit lost 400+ subs yesterday alone, and as the devs actually post there I can see it being a trend (metric).

Is it millions, no of course not, because most people still playing don’t unsub, but it does show that many don’t like the direction the game is going in.

I think I’m still going to stand by my “millions” quote. The vast VAST majority of players have been casual.

But, remember that my “millions” includes players who have quit. The game DID appeal to them.

Now, certainly a larger percentage of hardcore players quit than casuals. Hardcore players get bored when the content isn’t hard enough (or new enough) for them, and the seek out more difficult games.

Like I said, 90-year-old with dementia telling you he was friends with Babe Ruth. :P

Nice way to pick on a person: insult two people at the same time.

However, you should know that people with most forms of dementia actually remember events that happened long ago even though they (sadly) can’t remember their own childrens’ names. Further, the stories they DO remember are usually true (even for neurotypicals, it’s hard to remember lies 10 minutes after you make them up). So, if someone with dementia said s/he knew Babe Ruth, it’s quite likely the story is true.

Couple dozen- Where have you been? Since a little after launch the playerbase that wanted harder challenges grew quite a bit, which prompted the launches of such things like Marionette, Revamped Tequatl and Triple Trouble. Yet we still heard thread after thread of criticisms about how easy the content was for years. Don’t pretend that it was just a minority, there was a massive amount of players that wanted GW2 to push the difficulty higher in its content.

And all by the same people, over and over again.

I think your objections don’t make sense because Anet warned people HoT would be more challenging. I won’t debate with you if it’s overly hard or if getting level 2 masteries are a ‘grind’, but you absolutely can’t complain that you got HoT, and then were surprised that ‘hard’ content prevented you from doing what you assumed you would be able to. Anet put up the red flags; you ignored them.

False. They made accommodating changes to LS2 in response to forum posts threatening to bolt if the content was too hard. I bought HoT preorder because of those changes and what appeared to be a conciliatory attitude towards their core players (non-hardcore).

AFTER they made the changes and got me to preorder HoT, THEN they started announcing more details. But, even those details did not hint that the content would be extremely difficult, time- and XP-gated, and that they would simultaneously nerf rewards in the rest of Tyria in an attempt to force people into HoT maps.

In other words, they were dishonest.

We’ve had 3 years of casual things – why not 3 years of hardcore things?
Why is it that casuals feel entitled to the game?

Because that’s how we were enticed to buy it.

And, even HoT, the only reason I bought it was because they fooled me into thinking “challenging” did not mean “extremely difficult”.

This is just the same old assumption that casual = “almost never plays the game,” when, in many cases, it is simply a description of “level of seriousness with which the game is taken” and/or “level of skill.”

The “top 10%” can very easily, especially with how easy most of this game was prior to HoT, be made up in large part of people who are both very active and very “casual” in terms of skill level.

Correct. I’ve averaged over 5 hours a day, but I am very casual.

Good luck finding any MMO that can survive long term, without any type of challenging content for their players.

Let me think … oh, yeah! Guild Wars. And Guild Wars 2 (before HoT).

But, you’re missing the point completely. I don’t object to challenging content. I object to being forced to play through overly-hard content just to complete the story I payed $100 for. And I REALLY object to being forced to grind my way through masteries while doing it.

That’s one heck of an assumption.

I disagree with his post, but I think his assumption is probably in the right ballpark.

But, to ANet, it’s not the hours played that counts (or, it shouldn’t be). It’s the money spent that should count. They have to pay the bills. So, my question is do that same 10% spend half the real-life money?

That would be rewards and not content.

Sorry, but I play for rewards. Content is simply a way to obtain rewards.

The vast majority of rewards can be earned without needing other players.

Not in HoT. Non-meta rewards are basically junk. And the metas require committed players.

What rewards are gated other than the Rev head piece and what involves DS.

They’re ALL gated! How far can you get without gliding? That is a gate! And every other reward after that gate cannot be obtained without crossing that gate. That’s 90% of just VB.

And it’s not the only gate.

There was a time GW2 was Casual Friendly

Because if the meta were to be that players needed to wear pink armor to do raids, that would not mean that they could not be completed without that. It’s a player made restriction that has nothing to do with the design of the raids.

And it’s the GAME that allows people to demand this. If the game were designed correctly (IMO), there would be a lobby for hardcore gamers, which prevents non-pink gear (or some such mechanic), and non-lobby players would be disciplined for asking.

Exactly where are you forced by the game to need ascended to do content other than high level fractals? Player created requirements do not count. I could require all players to fight with pink armor but that doesn’t mean it’s actually required for that content.

You can complete all content, other than raids, in whatever build that you want. Everything on the HoT maps can now be done in whatever build you want. Every class can complete any of the HoT content. I’ve done map completion, ran the story, and done metas with all of them. You can do PvP and WvW in any build that you want. Yes, some builds will be more effective than others.

Why are you excluding player-created requirements? Raids are out of the question unless you have maxed your gear, because there are no teams that will allow you to come with them. You are excluding the main source of angst over this.

Also – nothing was taken away form anyone – the game that these people enjoyed for over 2 years is still there – none of it has been touched, changed or made harder. …

I’m sorry to say but dungeons being nerfed had nothing to do with toxicity – also dungeons are still there. The rewards got nerfed – but not the content.
If people are sincere in their claim that they enjoyed “the content” then that should not be a problem since dungeons are still there.
If people enjoyed the reward that’s a different issue altogether – I can understand that – but that’s not what was initially claimed.

Spirit shards can be obtained through doing one’s daily. This change was also made quite a bit of time before HoT came out.
Also side activities were practically useless a long time ago. I don’t remember the last time I went “Xp farming” by doing events in a pre-HoT GW2.
