Everything was met with some group loving or hating it, it all depended on who you asked.
Except there were two extremes. One was very loud, and the other was just numerous. Numerous beats loud when the actual finances are looked into. Numerous buys lots of things. Loud buys only a few things.
Some of the numerous camp were also loud. But, as is always the case when hardcore vs. casual is the breakdown, there weren’t enough loud ones in the numerous camp.
If they really want to learn the lesson strongly, they should poll their player base randomly. NOT via the forums, where zealots far outnumber “normal” players. They must poll the actual player base.
The first quarter when a game launches is high and then it recedes. I’m not even sure why you’d expect otherwise.
It did indeed follow the model. What didn’t follow was the actual numbers. It peaked too low, and the after-launch drop-off was too large. Basically, the whole graph was shifted downwards (and maybe squeezed a bit closer to the start).
This word is the same as learned. It is a word, I promise… I’ll wait while you google it.
I found this amusing, especially considering where your post came from.
Learnt is actually a better word for what you meant, because it only has one meaning. Learned can be either a past participle (like learnt), or it can be an adjective (prounced lur-nid). So, to avoid ambiguity, one should use learnt.
But, I DID have to look it up, to be sure.
I hope they don’t remove vertical designed maps. It works very well and makes the maps feel more real and alive. Exciting way to adventure. A flat map would be very boring now after HoT.
To make sure my statements on the maps aren’t mistaken:
I don’t have a problem with the 3D maps. What I have problems with is not being able to figure out where to go, no matter what I do.
They need to give us a way to tell how to get from point A to point B once we’ve already walked that path. Perhaps colored paths based upon how far up or down one must travel. Blue and pink like a litmus test. Or, the 7 colors of the rainbow. I don’t care what, really, just SOMETHING to navigate by.
But, the maps by themselves aren’t so much of a problem.
And, there needs to be hints in the storyline compass that tell you how to get to the next place in the story. Like the green arrows in front of you in the original storyline missions.
… now it is up to the players and not keep the grudge from HoT.
Hold a grudge? NOT!
Be wise with my money? NOW you’re talking.
I spent $100 on HoT expecting GW to just get better. Instead, it was nearly destroyed. There’s no way I’m going to pay them that kind of money again unless I am CERTAIN that they will not be so foolish again.
They spent 6 months basically ignoring their fans, until the fans turned around and left in droves. Then, they scrambled to try to patch over the crazy changes they tried to put into the game. They are only marginally successful so far, in my opinion.
The number one thing they need to fix has only been tweaked lightly: the grind. It just takes to long to do anything fun in HoT.
The number two thing is maps. There is simply no excuse for having a three-dimensional map without a three-dimensional mini-map, or at least some way of figuring out how to get up or down once you’ve already mapped the spot.
Number three is to return the core game back to it’s original shine. They’ve gone part-way, but they still need to give people some credit for doing the things that are supposed to be rewarding. Why rez NPCs any more? Why kill random monsters? Why do events in low-level areas? Why make Chef items? Why make potions? Why use boosters?
The answer to those (and many more) questions is as painful as it is obvious: there is no reason, because mountains of XP we earned are simply thrown away.
There are a lot more small reasons HoT failed miserably. But, none of the rest would keep me from buying it. The above three are show-stoppers, in my opinion. Unless they all are dealt with positively BEFORE the expansion, I will not buy the next expansion. Promises to fix them are not good enough; we have learned the hard way how good ANet’s promises are.
Yeah, but to buy them all is pricey. The reason I asked the question is to find out whether there is an ongoing supply. If not, then the prices will only go up over time. But, if there is a supply, the prices should stay stable.
OK, thanks! I thought that might be the answer, but I wanted to make sure.
They should give us more options. Even if they limit us to 4 rewards daily, but give us 6-10 to choose from, that would be OK.
And, they REALLY need to make HoT items a separate category. HoT proved unplayable to me (and thousands of others), so even having one in the rotation is bad. Make 4 categories: PvE, HoT, PvP, and WvW.
That’s wonderful. I enjoy the jumping puzzle dailies, myself. As do my guildmates. We were all really excited when JP’s made a return to the daily rotation. Thus far I think I’ve done most of the JP dailies as they’ve popped up, because I like doing them.
I’m sorry to be somewhat rude, but I really don’t see the problem here. Do the things in game that you enjoy. Don’t do the things you don’t. Why do you feel it’s necessary to remove something from the game that others enjoy?
You have to get 3 dailies to get the reward. If you only do PvE, then you either have to do a JP, or the others are chosen for you. They could be even less palatable to the OP. For me, I’m out of luck whenever there’s a HoT item coupled with another HoT item or hard (to me) JP.
Are minipet sets I, II, and/or III still available for purchase from ANet? If so, where can I find them?
DDOSing anything takes a lot of money and effort.
Actually, it’s not that difficult and costs little (although, it’s NOT free). Botnets rent time by the minute or hour, and hacking kits are pretty cheap.
Now, doing it RIGHT, that takes effort and expertise (but not much more money other than training). Without doing it right, it will be detectable in the local firewall AND on the ISP’s network. So, it won’t happen consistently over time unless A) they’re good, or he has no firewall.
In security, always look to your own equipment first.
IMO, you are not “getting” hacked. You ARE hacked. Or, at least I’m 98% sure you are.
You didn’t mention anti-virus until a few posts ago. This should have been the first statement out of your keyboard after the problem description (before the rant, even). To fail to mention it earlier means you didn’t take it seriously (until someone else did). I guarantee you the hackers took it seriously.
What about your firewall? What’s that telling you?
Don’t have a firewall? Then it’s 100%, not 98%. Not up to date and more than 3 years old? 100% again. Password less than 14 characters on your Wi-Fi? 100% again. Password less than 20 characters on your firewall and WAN-side monitoring allowed? Same.
First test: check your hardware firewall’s logs. It will tell you if you are being dosed or ddosed from outside.
Selling Tinfoil hats here! Get your tinfoil hats while they’re hot!
Ha ha ha! I’ll take two.
But being serious… is it possible to launch a DDoS against a person’s personal computer? I assumed that was something that was pretty much limited to ISPs and networks….
They come across networks, but they can attack any node or network. And, yes, they do attack individual PCs. Not common, though.
I found the shared slots to be hands-down the best purchase I’ve ever made in this game. I intend to buy another five on my birthday, with the gems I’m hoping I get.
I use them as a way to transfer stuff from one character to another, especially from free-range characters to my mules.
I would have paid twice what they’re charging for them (although it would have taken me longer to justify the first ones in my head).
I recommend defining your terms in the first post.
Bump: If you’re going to move a thread, move it to the TOP of the section, not 3 pages down.
With all the new fractal achievements each day, it would be nice to have a button that takes you to the LFG display directly from the fractal achievement. Similar to how clicking the eyeball adds it to your tracked achievements panel in the upper-right.
It would be even nicer if it would automatically put up an LFG ad for that level (assuming there’s only one in that tier).
It is a nice incentive to do dailies for people who got capped daily AP and have too many spirit shards already
I believe it’s impossible to have capped daily achieves. There hasn’t been enough time since release.
The reason HoT zones are so difficult to navigate is because the map can’t communicate Z-axis space.
If GW2 had a 3D map it’d be fine
Yup.
I don’t like underground locations in the regular game for the same reason. If the game is providing a map at all, it does so because the character has unveiled that part of the map.
But, underground and in HoT, it makes no difference whether you’ve been there or not. Now, in the core game you could more or less live with it because it doesn’t matter a whole lot. But, in HoT, you are required to remember all of the layers and tunnels.
Make the maps playable and I’ll try it again. But, when you can stand immediately above or below some PoI you’re looking for, but can’t get to it, there’s something wrong with the map.
Put dotted tunnel lines in the mini-maps once you’ve been through an area.
<snicker>For people that says to git gud, can you guys post videos of you soloing the Champion Mushroom Queen HP under Rata Novus in TD and the Vampire Broodmother HP in VB? Pls I need to learn how to properly play this game
Excellently put, my friend!
Read the patch notes on Tuesday. Mr. O’Brien sees no reason to talk and promise before something actually ships. Maybe if we’re lucky the patch notes will be up in time to read them before the patch finishes loading.
I don’t blame him. This community screams bloody murder no matter what he tries to do.
Yeah, but now they know they should ignore the hardcore squeaky wheels, because they aren’t a big enough portion of the population to matter.
[quote=6096778;Pifil.5193:]
Seems like most people replying to this thread are not answering the question “why don’t you raid?”, but “why don’t you pug?”
Pugs are completely different than guild or friend groups. Pugs even have different motivations much of the time.
tl;dr: don’t pug
The OP didn’t ask “Why don’t you raid?”. S/he asked “Why are people so afraid of raiding?” That’s a very different question, and IMO people have answered it: they’re not.
Many agreed with me: I do not fear raids. I simply despise the typical attitude that goes along with typical raiding people.
Why don’t you clean up the mess that gating created in HoT before “fixing” something that’s not broken (fractals)? Goodness, gracious, the gating is universally reviled, but there’s not a peep about fixing it. On the other hand, Fractals are finally fun, and yet you see some reason to fundamentally change them?
How about asking our opinion as to what needs fixing instead of deciding what we want?
My response was simply for him to remove all of his armor and equip a level 0 white weapon and enter AC solo. He asked why he would waste his time. Obviously he wasn’t genuinely interested in the hard content.
This is remarkably astute. You’ve pinned down exactly what hardcore means, in reverse. Because that’s how hardcore-specific content is created, except instead of making the player less capable, they make the enemies more capable.
I love it!
I think that the discussion “casual” vs. “hardcode” does not do the population reality of this game (or any other game) justice. It divides the player base into those who can and therefore do and those who cannot.
That’s not how it is. There is also those who can, but don’t care for that particular type of content. Or those who can but are not willing to accept the “environmental” consequences like waiting for a complete group, toxicity, requirement to join a guild etc. Or those who can but prefer “true” competitive gameplay. Or those that can but are not willing to follow one single min/max scheme. Or… Or… It is not true that those who don’t do raids are exclusively those who are not able to do them considering their abilities.
I think this group of players is a large group. Maybe it is time to step away from the current black/white view, although it is obviously comfortable for some to simplify in that way.
I agree. I’m certainly a good enough player to succeed in raiding. Heck, I’m working on getting my 7th character into full ascended gear.
No, my reason is that the player base there just isn’t the kind of group I want to join.
I’m actually rather fond of raiding, even though I’ve never done it anf probably never will. Why? Because the hardcores have moved to their own private corner of the world, out of my way. I just wish they had a lobby so I wouldn’t have to put up with their antics in map-chat.
Fractals has become downright fun now that they’re all in raids.
(edited by Daddicus.6128)
I may have miscommunicated: I don’t rez NPCs. I DO rez players. In fact, I go out of my way to do so. My version of the Golden Rule (for GW).
And, I’ll do events in zones above tier 1, because of the map rewards. They aren’t much, but as long as the event doesn’t take me away from my path or gobble too much time, why not? But, defend the keep for 5 minutes? Why bother? It’s worth almost nothing.
All I would like to see is something akin to the map rewards. Give us a tier 6 crafting mat, even if limited to the common ones. A chance at a rare. ANYTHING.
I want SOMETHING for XP past 80/masteries. There are so many things I just skip over now that I used to do. Rez NPCs. Local events. Even killing stuff; now I just run through, because they’re no point to killing them any more.
It doesn’t matter to me. There’s no way on earth that I will pay them for another expansion when I can’t even get halfway through the story in the current one.
Get rid of the gating, period.
Fix mapping. There’s simply no excuse for not being able to see places you’ve been before just because they’re not in your line of sight (i.e. up and down through trees and rocks).
Give us a HINT at least of how to get up or down to areas we have not been to yet.
Until those three are fixed, an expansion purchase by me simply won’t happen. I don’t have any problem spending money. But, I have a huge problem when the game is made impossible to play for some folks, most notably myself.
I’m likely to die of old age before I even get one legendary anything created, so for me it’s easy: go living story!
But, I have a much greater priority than either: Fix the maps in HoT! Give us some kind of mapping tool(s) that allow us to see the layers and the paths through them. As it is, it’s nearly impossible to see where you are and how to get above or below where you are.
I’ve given up even trying any more after Auric Basin and Tangled Depths. I’ve come to an understanding for myself that I just can’t hack it there. To these old eyes, it’s too frustrating to even bother any more. So, obviously, to me legendary items are not even a consideration.

I have 9 mains (one for each profession), and this guy is my 7th in line to get ascended armor crafted. I just don’t want to craft it and then find out that I have to change the stats once I get to Chronomancer. But, that’s a LONG way down the road; I have at least 3 other toons to take through HoT first (far enough to get to elite specializations).
But, there’s good ideas here. Thanks!
if you dont have any masteries to level it could be accumulated to the point of a level up tome or spirit shard. maybe it could be done via a repeatable achievement in the achievement panel that captures xp gained while a mastery track is not selected to level
I would support a repeatable achievement where you got something like 1 achievement point per 2 “levels” of XP (or 10; whatever).
If you want your character to be more powerful, or in the case of PvP be remotely competitive at all, you need to by the expansion. GW2 has done a lot of thing right, but the pay to win of the expansion wasn’t one of them.
I wouldn’t mind so much paying for the expansion, if only I could get the real game back. Some of the expansion was good (revenants, some masteries), but the story content is too hard to complete, which makes it useless to me. And, the dumbing down that occurred in central Tyria really hurts.
Sorry, I forgot to say: PvE exclusively.
Nothing. I’m still pretty torqued about HoT, so I haven’t been willing to spend anything.
Today is the first day I gave it serious thought: the keys. I haven’t bought any yet, but I may. I still like the game, no matter how damaged it became with HoT. But, I recoil at the thought of throwing more money at them.
Well, I’ve gotten to my 5th character to outfit with ascended: my Mesmer. Problem is that I don’t have nearly enough hero points to get Chronomancer yet. I really don’t want to commit all that money and effort, not knowing how the elite specialization works. I also don’t like spending money to change it later.
So, is there a build that works with my Mesmer that will still work as I get Chronomancer?
Celestial comes to mind, but it seems so bland. Berzerker is out of the question due to the low life expectancy. What do you think? Cost is not a factor.
Dungeons are still a basic (if optional) set of anchor points in the main storyline. I just finished the last story dungeon today, and I didn’t do it for money. The mastery point entered into my thoughts, but that wasn’t the main reason, either. I’m just a completionist. I like doing all the possibilities, and dungeons are part of that.
I did think that it might be good to do them NOW, rather than later, in case ANet removes them entirely. But, I don’t think they will. They provide the background for Destiny’s Edge getting back together to help the party take down Zhaitan. Without the dungeons, there’s no way to understand why they just seem to be nicer to each other later in the storyline.
So, I don’t think they CAN eliminate them entirely. Plus, it was fun.
Now, I don’t really understand why they change when you go explorable. I would like to understand the lore reason for that.
Rats. I was hoping there was material missing on the wiki. I should have known.
Well, considering I don’t even have all my characters in ascended gear yet, I guess this is a ways down the road. But, thanks for the info!
That’s how
balancebusiness works. Straight up power creep is better for sales.
Actually, with this game it’s the opposite. Since they’re not getting paid for making people pay, power creep works against them: it provides a disincentive to new players.
I think so too, Skill Points were a currency that you paid for some items at the mystic forge with. Then they changed Skill Points into Hero Points and Spirit Shards. So they could just switch to a repetitive achievement giving 1 Spirit Shard per level. They would have to remove the drops to balance this a bit.
It gave a reward for leveling which until the HoT changes remained since GW1 started. It gave some meaning to all the XP we were generating.
Anet, can I swap for all the useless XP boosters I have for something else?
I’m not so concerned about replacing the current system with the old. The new system has merit, also.
What bothers me is the complete waste that’s occurring every time I do things that used to carry a reward. Crafting, reviving people, consumables, you name it.
It doesn’t have to be a landslide of cash. But, SOMETHING to turn XP into would at least make sense.
I should temper that a bit. Some of the damage they did was not part of HoT. It was preparatory to HoT. So, you’re stuck with those damaged parts of the game regardless of whether you buy HoT or not.
This requires an item that requires a Ball of Dark Energy. To do that, you must salvage an ascended weapons or armor piece, or a few trinkets (other than rings).
But, where are we supposed to get those items? They don’t seem to drop as loot, at least nowhere I’ve been. Only rings drop, and they won’t salvage to Balls.
Not only would I not buy it, if I could, I would give it back. It’s not that it was a waste of money. If that were the case, I would simply chalk it off to a bad use of dollars. No, they damaged the base game severely once one installed HoT.
So, definitely not.
For the most part, mobs that do not give experience on kill, does not give a chance at loot.
For the most part, this is false.
Every creature you kill gives XP and a loot chance. The exceptions are story missions, and some world boss battles (VineWrath comes to mind). But, even the Claw of Jormag’s minions give loot and XP if you bother killing them.
I want the problem fixed.
It’s not a “problem” — it’s a preference, albeit for lots and lots of us. The game works perfectly well and nothing is “wasted” (as the poster above says, once you’ve done progressing in levels & masteries, you don’t need ‘experience’ points).
I do feel that all the XP boosters I have now are wasting away, until the next expansion (or until the update that allows me to convert them to something else). And I would like to see a use for XP. However, it’s nothing remotely like bugged events, the problem of having to move chest keys from character to character, the needless expense of runes|sigils that can’t be swapped to match legendary gear stat changes, and so on.
tl;dr sure, I’d like to see a use for XP post-masteries; I just think we can easily live without it.
You kind of missed the point.
I just hate it that experience points are worthless once you’ve gotten enough to get all the masteries. Worse, most of the consumable items give XP boosts, as do banners and such. They basically make worthless into bigger worthless. Zero is still zero.
I want the problem fixed.
My idea is to give us karma instead, once we’ve maxed out. I’m not sure what the ratio should be, maybe 100 XP = 1 karma (or 10 or 1000).
Thoughts?
What do people mean by “AP”?
