Account hacking incident

I’m glad you guys caught it.

This is really a giant banner ad for using 2FA, gamers.

Also, Mo, it would be good if we could completely disable the GW1 account. Because there’s another vulnerability here as well: GW1 runs as admin. So, if the account is hacked, the hacker can spend a great deal of time trying to find a way to hack the game itself, and gain control of the user’s computer.

Another giant banner ad: make the game operate as any other application. Upgrades should use the upgrade process the OS provides. That way, it doesn’t need admin rights. Yeah, it’s a pain, but the alternative is really bad.

Ability to mark an item type as “junk”. Practically all green sigils and runes are basically junk (to me). I would like to be able to mark them so they always sell when I click “Sell Junk”. (Would need an undo abiltity, though, for when the price at the TP goes up.)

toy box or gadget box…even lets you use unlocked gadgets like “eaters” from the toy box, which would free up space

I would prefer if we could just use the “eaters” from the bank, and that they could eat right out of the bank’s material storage. I’m even willing to be that you have to actually be at a bank to use them. Just don’t make me transfer both the three eaters and three stacks of stuff, and then have to put them back.

It’s great what ANET did with fractals now where everyone can easily get to AR 150 but what happens with the players that worked hard to get to AR150 previously? Well, they got screwed.
I have (5) 16+ AR infusions that i cant deconstruct. The INFUZ doesnt have an option that goes that high. All the time and gold spend into these infusions are to go to waste now. It would not be advantageous for me to use these AR only infusions because i would not have the attributes like i would if i get a lower tier (9+ AR with 5+ vitality for instance). That was very insulting in my opinion.
I cant even attach an attribute to my existing 16+ AR only infusions……. this is ridiculous.
All the players that worked hard to get high AR infusions now are basically getting the short end of the stick now.
I feel like something should take place here to re mediate this situation.

See the third post in this thread.

I don’t think the OP’s suggestion is needed, but I won’t object.

However, one that IS needed (need? curious I would use that word) is to be able to salvage commons separately.

But, I’m certainly not complaining. It was a GREAT feature addition.

NOTE: The math below does not apply above +13, until they fix it (which, I agree, they really need to do).

You lose EXACTLY 1s 49.6c for each destruction (the price of one reagent).

Using the example given above, going from +16 to +10 is 63 deconstructions. That’s … drum roll please … 94s 24.8c. And you are left with 320 AR to play with as you please.

Personally, I’m not going down that low, because I want to do it with as few pieces of equipment as I can. But, I’m certainly not going to complain about getting screwed when they’re clearly throwing money at me. AND, I got to use those AR points for many months.

Remember when they removed MF from gear?

Yes, I do, and I referred to it (indirectly) above. They had almost exactly the same problem then: they took away the magic find from one piece (amulet, I think), and replaced it with nothing. For balance reasons. Sound familiar?

Back then I quit playing for a month in protest. I did not return until they (privately) admitted their error and refunded my laurels.

READ THIS:

You can insert any agony infusion into any infusion slot (minus amulet). And you can simply make a lot of +9 infusions out of your higher ones for free.

It basically means if you had the usual 3x +10 and 2x +11 you can now exchange them for 14x +9 infusions. And you only need 6x +7 and 12x +9 infusions to get your full 150.

What does that mean? Right you actually don’t have to pay anything for 150 AR and you end up with 2x +9 infusions and a few fractal relics (sell the old simple +7 ones) in your bag.

Only up to +13s. Anything higher cannot currently be broken up.

The extractor requires fractal access or gems correct? Which again doesn’t help us. Not going to bother until anet gets a clue. The 6 infusions from my toon’s amulets will just sit in storage until then. I wont fill up the empty slots in the amulets, the options are useless to me.

Cash only (24s). But, you have to go into the fractal lobby to get one. That’s free, though.

I have the same attitude for PvE people forced into WvW to get things to enhance their preferred game play. Frankly I don’t find complaining about something that has cost me stuff in this game, and cost even a minimal amount of attributes a bad attitude.

I admit I didn’t read the release notes completely otherwise I would have known about the change in the infusion type. However, I would still not be happy with the change to the Amulet, or with the fact that I would have to do fractals in order to take advantage of the other slots that could be available. This is an attempt to get me to play a part of the game I don’t enjoy. Regardless of the game style, in my opinion it’s not right to make it so people have to go into areas they don’t like just to get things that help their game style.

You can call that a bad attitude if you want.. I call it asking to get what I have paid for in more than laurels and in game gold… :P

I suspect they just didn’t think it completely through. It’s obvious they did think about the related topic of balance, because allowing amulets to have all types of infusions (old definition) would grant one more slot to a certain segment of players.

But, I don’t think they thought of the refunding practice. Refunding only fractal relics for agony means that the other infusions are pretty much worthless.

Perhaps a good compromise would be to grant an ability to switch ones amulet to accept the new “infusions” (but no longer accept enrichments). And, vice-versa.

So, they wouldn’t need to add a slot; just allow it to be swapped. Maybe?

Let’s not degrade to personal shots… Nothing I posted was nonsense… Some was incorrect it seems because the slot assignments were changed.. but you still have to do fractals to get the extra infusion slots and that sucks.. As I noted above, I will simply have to stop worrying about it since I don’t do fractals… Hopefully ANet will give us something nice in place of the infusions we can’t use anymore.

Please forgive me. I let my emotions get the better of me. Considering I made exactly the same argument in reverse in the past, I should know better.

Yes, infusing them requires fractals. But, attuning rings doesn’t. I’m not sure if those two slots are valuable to you WvW and PvP people or not. ???

To make up for my insult, I offer to personally escort you through the first 10 fractals. Just ping me in-game and mention who you are. It will take a couple weeks, though. 10 fractals would be at least a start on your quest for enough mojo to infuse something.

I think maybe the wiki has not caught up yet. I don’t have any attuned rings to look in game because I rarely do fractals and have little interest in them.

Yeah, but to get a ring attuned, it only costs money, a +1 agony infusion (which you can buy for a dime on the TP), and 1/10 of a spirit shard. (Just don’t forget to remove the infusions before you make one.)

Now, to get the third slot on a ring (or the second one on a back piece), you have to infuse them. And, unfortunately for WvW-only and PvP-only folks, that requires time in fractals.

Much easier(but possibly more expensive) to get higher AR in all the other slots though.

Yeah, a little. I never swapped out my magic-find infusion, so it took me 11s, 12s, and 13s to get to 149 (which now seems to be all you need, according to the new interface?)

But, I can’t swap weapons yet. So, I’m going to port my +7s over to new weapons once they become overkill.

Yes but they are for agony resistance… and NOT for the WvW infusions he’s trying to make us believe they will take.

There are exactly two kinds of infusions now: infusions and enrichments. All slots (except 1) now take ALL infusions. The sole exception is the amulet slot, which only takes enrichments.

And, if you’re less belligerent, they might even add a feature to change its type.

just try it and you will see…….

There is only ONE slot for an infusion in the ascended rings, (all trinkets actually). If you think I’m going to waste time overwriting one just to see if more will appear… well.. not!

I seriously sense a troll…. especially since all you do is tell us… and won’t show..

and the agony ones take agony resistance infusions…

He’s not a troll: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Attuned_Adelbern's_Royal_Signet_Ring

Search for Attuned or Infused on the Wiki to find the rest.

However, you have a point that you now have to play PvE content (fractals) to get them. I’ve made the same argument in reverse (I’m a PvE-only player), so I sympathize. (Which is a lot better than I received from the WvW crowd.)

But, if you want ANet to change this, I suggest a heck of a lot better attitude.

Not true. The next time I extract them, I’m moving them to other weapons (so I can be maxed with better weapon selections).

After that, when I have too many, I’m going to sell them back to the vendor. Seems to me I got to use their weapons interest-free for a year.

… only universally positive if they’re additions.

This is actually a very good point. Using the near-universally reviled desert borderlands, what would have been the problem with having both sets of maps?

Yes, it makes for a more complex chunk of coding, and maybe with WvW is just isn’t practical. But, the idea still stands as good.

Don’t kill old dungeons and add new ones. Just add new ones. Heck, they could even be in HoT zones.

Adventures are hated by a large contingent of players, but that’s mainly because they’re required for mastery advancement. Most of those who don’t like them simply don’t play them.

But, they lose out on MPs for that decision. ANet shouldn’t remove mastery progression from adventures just to placate people like me who despise them. There are people who like them.

Instead, they should add other content, at approximately the same difficulty, as an alternate way to get MPs. They can even cap this first crop of MPs so it doesn’t become a way to get more when the next masteries come out (if they do).

Add stuff rather than replacing stuff. Good idea!

Don’t be another victim of the very small but very vocal minority that shouts down their more-casual opponents. ANet changed HoT because HoT was an absolute disaster. If the harder-core people were right that they are the majority, ANet wouldn’t have made any changes, because their bottom line wouldn’t have suffered. They listen to money talking (which is fine — they’re a business).

The fact that they DID make changes (although not nearly enough changes) conclusively demonstrates which side of this argument had the majority of dollars spent over time.

Hopefully they will make a few more changes to get the game back to where it was.

True, but this thread is about whether HoT ruined GW2.

Pouring a fifty-five gallon drum of water into 55 1-gallon buckets doesn’t reduce the volume of water. It merely makes it easier to carry.

Breaking up the complaints against HoT into smaller pieces merely makes it easier to talk about. But, then saying each piece is a small problem makes it easier to argue against. But, in total, there’s still 55 gallons of water, and HoT did ruin GW2 (although they have partially recovered).

The most important thing you can do is research. Second is practice.

Fractals get progressively harder as levels go up. The heat room gets hotter. The lasers in the maze fire more often and for more damage. The doors in the east room take more damage.

And, if you think THOSE are hard, wait until the boss fight.

But, I’m not posting to discourage you. Only to point out you simply can’t outrun your ability in fractals. They’ll murder you. At EVERY level, a fractal gets harder.

When you hit a level that’s too hard, don’t quit. First, read the Wiki (and other sources). Then, do the same fractal at a lower level. Using the Wiki, notice the differences. Those differences are what you must overcome.

For example, you might be able to make it through the heat room at level 15, but at level 55, it’s another story. The heat does a lot more damage.

How to fix? Well, remember those cooling rods you get in all of the rooms? Put them into their receptacles in the heat room, because that’s what they’re for. Of course, this means you have to do the heat room last, or you won’t have all three.

Each rod lowers the damage a bit. There’s one receptacle immediately to the left of the second force field as you enter. Once you place it, you pop back out at the beginning.

Use skill 1 CONSTANTLY in there (unless you have a class that wants its own method, like Necro shroud skill 2). Every time you use skill 1, it speeds you up 5%. Any profession can safely put in the first rod without dying every time, and without using any profession skills.

Anyhow, use this progression of learning: Try, practice, try until success. Then, move to the next level. See what changed, alter your strategy, and try again. When you hit a wall (and you WILL hit walls), research, back off, and try new strategies. Keep repeating the progress up the levels.

And, whatever you do, don’t push yourself too hard. When a level is too hard, back off and practice until you get better. There’s a reason you can’t open fractals until your personal level is high enough: to keep you from getting crushed.

Yeah, you want to push yourself, but not TOO hard. Play at less than 10 levels above your personal level (give or take).

I feel bad for anet they put all this design into HoT and then had to redo that design to balance it out (delaying upcoming content even more). Anet needs to focus on getting things done right the first time. Look at those mini adventures in HoT and how poorly that was done. Guild halls are almost pointless.

You are correct. Completely correct.

Unfortunately, ANet doesn’t bother asking their player base honestly what they want. They decide what they want to give us, and then test the waters, with a tiny subset of what they’re thinking, to see who screams.

Worse, the “waters” they test against are almost universally hardcore players (Reddit users and to a lesser degree, forum participants). So, a tiny percentage of extremely vocal players get their way. Why are they surprised when it fails miserably?

If they really want to do it right, they need to survey a statistically-valid randomly-chosen portion of their entire player base. They need the survey to include EVERYTHING they are thinking about doing.

NOTE: The survey could be skewed towards people who spend more money on the game. It doesn’t have to be a completely random list.

If they had done that, they would have learned a year before HoT released how badly their designs were going to be welcomed. Maybe even longer. Certainly in time to avoid publishing the worst of the features.

I feel that I’ve read many posts over many threads made to the effect of ‘the HoT maps are dead, so that’s evidence that it’s a failure.’ Enough times that I’ve been pondering this a little (I’m open to the possibility I’m mistaken about the frequency I’ve read such posts). But, is it possible that something else is going on?

The HoT maps have more meta events requiring a larger player count to participate. So, it’d make sense then that the player base needs to be more proactive about getting on populated maps… Players now use squads and taxis a lot more in HoT maps than in core Tyria maps to help make sure the meta events succeed.

So, if someone just solo ports in to a HoT map, then it’s also more likely they’ll jump into an empty map because that’s how the megaservers were set up to do in reaction to full(er) maps. This then might create a false perception that HoT maps are empty, when they’re actually just more consolidated due to player proactivity.

Thoughts? (again, I’m open to the idea that such claims aren’t as frequent as I currently think they are).

~EW

I think this is pretty much right on target.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t help much. Those people who solo port are playing by themselves. If you are right (and I think you are), then solo players are being punished for playing the game the way it was designed: play it your way. Automatic functionality shouldn’t do that.

It would be easy to fix, but I can hear the screams in advance: all ports go to the fullest maps first. Port starts; snapshot of all maps is taken, map with the smallest number of available slots is chosen.

False. Dungeon rewards were slashed, Fractals and core Tyria had gold nerfed into the ground, and experience points were rendered useless. The XP neutering had a corollary effect as well: most boosters, potions, and food lost a significant piece of their value.

SOME of those have been fixed. But, not all.

I should add: if they had had an option to remove HoT and revert to core only, I would have done it in a heartbeat between November and April. It would have been a no-brainer for me.

At this time, though, since the patches, HoT is tolerable. I still don’t like it, but I don’t hate it with an ever-burning passion, as I did for the first 6 months.

I’m down to three things on my list:

Fix the maps so you don’t lose your memory every time you move. If we have a map, dangit, leave that map COMPLETE once I’ve been through it. No more of the hidden passageways that you can only find by accident. No more being able to walk immediately over or under some object or event you need, but have no idea how to get to it. So, show tunnels and ramps more clearly once we’ve been through an area. There’s no excuse for making maps on which we can see the shadows of trees, but we can’t know that there’s a cavern underneath it unless we’re standing inside that cavern. It’s cool when we first go through an underground area, but once we’ve been there, it’s just a chore finding the entrance again.

Fix XP. XP is a reward, or should be. But, once you’re level 80 and masteried-up, it’s useless. Either make it worth something, or remove all references to it in level 80 consumables, boosters, etc., and replace them with something else. I got gold on an adventure for the first time yesterday. But, you know what I received? 2 mastery points and a slight movement of my mastery bar. That’s all. Next time? I’ll get nothing. Why on earth do they give away XP to people who cannot use it?

Apologize. Don’t just fix nebulous problems without specifics. Let us know you made a set of specific mistakes, so we’ll know you won’t make them again.

Like I said, the preparatory work that paved the way for HoT is what ruined the game. F2P is just one aspect. But, it wasn’t F2P specifically that caused the damage. It was removing the core game from sales. That meant that all new players were either F2P (with all the restrictions) or HoT (with all the damage). There was no longer an option to play core.

Makes some sense. I played a full-on minion set for the last 24 hours. I seem to have stayed alive a lot better (although the levels were only in the 80s, not the 90s).

Does precision apply to condition damage?

Did HoT ruin GW2?

Yes, HoT ruined the game. Especially the harm it inflicted on core stuff in preparation for HoT.

But, it did give us some good, too. Gliding is universally well-received. Raids removed some of the worst people and sandboxed them, so there’s a lot less toxicity.

The April patch also helped a lot. HoT is still basically unplayable, but with effort, you can struggle through it. Which, unfortunately, you have to do in order to play elite specializations.

Unfortunately, the elite specs are a sword that cuts both ways. If you work a character’s way through enough HoT garbage to get it, it’s great. But, if you don’t you’re a second-class citizen except in basic open-world core Tyria.

So, I’ll say HoT tried very hard to ruin the game, and almost succeeded. ANet realized they made HUGE mistakes, and tried to correct them. IMO, they didn’t try hard enough, but they have made things at least marginally playable. And, they undid many of the really onerous things they did to core with the April patch.

So, I still play every day. I force myself into HoT whenever the dailies point me there (if I can get to whatever is required). So, it’s not ruined. More like it left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Can someone answer my question about why Viper is preferred over Pahua’s? I definitely like the condition damage being top dog. But, I don’t like dying all the time, which seems to be what happens to typical power/precision builds.

Bored? No. Disappointed? Very much so. HoT was an epic and harmful disaster. They’ve undone some of the shredding they did, but they’re not done yet. They still have massive changes to make for my liking.

But, no, not bored. I won’t even be close to bored until I finish going through all of the core storyline missions. There’s a LOT of material there that I would never have known about.
