I’m not sure what twinking means, but those items are indeed for leveling other characters on your account. There are a whole bunch of them, each with several possible levels. They operate at a higher level than the minimum level required, thus making leveling characters easier.

For example, you might get one that requires level 58, but it will operate in your combats as if it were level 61 (even if you are not). So, you basically get to kill stuff faster (or, in the case of armor, protect yourself better).

Note that you can also craft some things that are similar as well.

6) Give us a warning when we’re about to gather something with an implement that’s not the right level. If it were real life, there’s no way someone would use the wrong implement for any kind of gathering. But, because it’s a game, and you can’t see the implement, you can end up losing the materials.

It would be OK to only start warning players after they have used the wrong implement a few times.

I can think of two alternatives if that isn’t viable:

A) Put a colored border around nodes and around implements, so we get a visual clue when they don’t match.

B) Give us an audible cue that we just harvested junk, so maybe we step back before doing it again.

How would you rate the HoT Fun Factor?

The grind for masteries kills most of the fun, and the monstrously difficult and overly-prevalent mobs kill most of the rest of the fun. Couple that with virtually no humans willing to help (including even revives and rezzes), and it’s very bad.

I didn’t even start HoT content until after Halloween, so I’ve been in there maybe two weeks. But, I’m already so frustrated I’m ready to quit it completely. But, I still have to put up with masteries in the old content, and the rewards have been reduced.

Unfortunately, I’m not sure it’s fixable. I’m not sure what they tried to accomplish, but fun was definitely not the end result.

I agree completely. My ranger is by far my best character and has the best equipment. Yet she has a very difficult time with some of them. It’s really hard to hit when you can’t hit and you can’t interrupt and your character loses focus and stops shooting every half-second. It’s absurdly hard in the new zones. It’s like playing a completely different game.

Turning off HoT won’t get you better dungeon rewards. People without HoT have the same dungeon rewards. So turning it off serves no purpose.

Some people can solo most HoT content and others can’t. If you can’t find friends or a casual guild, then I guess you’ll never get to see that content.

However, in my guild, most people who didn’t like it at first found themselves warming to it as we explored it together as a guild.

Perhaps, but I shouldn’t have to! Where is the game advertised as being only for groups?

the new maps are empty i have no idea if people are bored of them that soon but they are not that much friendly and fun to be played if you ask me always something is pushing you on time and just events spam that take to long to do

It’s much worse than even that.

I had 6 people run right over my dead body running from one event to another. I don’t really blame them, since if they stop running, they might lose whatever event progress they already have (due to the event leeching block). But, the end result is a much more unfriendly atmosphere.

On top of that, practically nobody will chat. In the hours I’ve played in VB, I have had exactly one person respond to my asking for help in map chat, and one person revive me. There have been dozens of opportunities, but only two friendly people in a whole zone?

Again, I can’t really blame them; the culprit is the cutthroat activities that ANet has forced us to follow. Nobody CAN help because they’re too busy with their own activity.

Yeah surely no content in HoT. Stop troll people.

I think you’re missing the point. I CAN’T see that content, because I’m locked out of it due to not having the right masteries. So, when you skipped over masteries, that explains your mindset: you aren’t evaluating the same things I am.

There may be tons of good stuff. But, I’m locked out until I grind through the masteries. I don’t even know how many or which ones I have to grind through. All I know is vanilla XP doesn’t count; I have to do events inside VB. But, the events frequently fail, leaving me both unable to get my masteries and simultaneously unable to dive further into the content.

So, no, we’re not trolls. We’re just not gods.

Once players have mastery points and map completion, expecting them to invest 2-3 hours every time they revisit these maps to (possibly) achieve something meaningful makes no sense whatsoever.

I think you are correct (I haven’t gotten that far, personally). However, it has been done before: SW has an approximately hourly VW mission, Dry Top has an exactly 1 hour mission. So, something similar was done before, just shorter.

If it really takes 2-3 hours to get through a meta, it will lose me very rapidly. Even the hour in SW was long, although I would frequently suffer through the buildup just so I could do the combat and pacman. 3 hours is out of the question; I rarely even play that long at one sitting, let alone playing that long in one event.

This thread is a follow-on to https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Simple-changes-that-might-be-useful/first#post4990807

This thread is for little ideas, not big ones.

Please start your idea or list of ideas with the next number in sequence (from the most recent post), so in case some are found useful to the devs, they can refer to them more easily.

1) During an update, the download information is updated very rapidly. This takes up resources that are not needed, since nobody can follow them anyhow. The idea is to post the number of files and data size only once every second or two.

2) During an update, tell us the amount of data remaining to download, not how much has already been downloaded. (In addition, you can post the starting estimate in a new column or next to the data remaining.)

3) Give us a way to sort items in the material storage bins in the bank. We shouldn’t have to hunt through the list to find artichokes.

4) Allow us to change the size of the icons in our inventory, bank, or material storage, so we can fit more on the screen.

5) Coupled with number 4, allows us to set a predefined icon for certain types of items in our pack. For example, any armor I have there could have an icon that’s just a capital A.

I like spending keys, but not at normal prices. I only buy them when they’re on sale (which isn’t very often). But, I’m weird: I’m happy just getting the uncommon stuff like forge stones and BL salvage kits. I’m perfectly happy never getting a rare item, but ONLY at the lower price, when the return is about even money. But, it’s a money-loser at the regular price, even 25 at a time.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Daddicus.6128

It’s not dumb at all … your whole post assumes the only way to make gold was from all the things that were nerfed … when most of the things you mention here aren’t even the BEST ways to make gold. See, the problem here is that you only know how to farm gold when some of the best way to make gold is to take the stuff you farm and figure out when to sell it. Have you even looked at TP prices for any of the mats needed for making a guild hall for instance, or any mat for that matter?

The big 3 were SW, Fractals, and Dungeons, more or less in that order. Nothing else in the PvE side of the game came close. But, all have been nerfed heavily. So, the OP is completely correct, just incomplete.

Why would you want to turn off masteries and elite specializations? If you don’t like the elite specs, don’t use them, simple as that, and for masteries, they do absolutely no harm and in fact help without taking anything from anywhere.

As for dungeons, they can still be done. You can still find groups, just not as easily as before. Perhaps join a guild and ask for help.

You’re right on especs. But, masteries are required, and you apparently do not gain regular XP any more. So, no more spirit shards (except one-off sources like daily achievements).

Just don’t go to the HoT maps? You’ll still have Central Tyria masteries, but you can just ignore those if you’re not interested in them.

There is no way to just turn off HoT, but it sounds like your complaint is mostly that you don’t like the maps, which are easily avoided.

It’s mostly masteries and so-called elite specializations that I want to turn off. But, I would also like to undo the dungeon changes. I didn’t farm dungeons, but I also didn’t finish them all. With the nerf, I’ll never be able to find a group to do all the explorable modes of the dungeons.

Daddicus.6128

To me, HoT is just a collection of terrible maps with overpowering mobs. It’s like Orr was in the early days, except much more powerful and harder to find your way around.

You can’t find your way around, and it seems the entire map is gated by masteries. Add to that an unbelievable number of mobs that are way beyond a level that leaves the game playable.

The mastery system seems like it could be interesting material, but the glacial pace of getting masteries means it’s just a grind. I don’t mind grinding somewhat for equipment, but grinding just to be able to survive the mobs is simply wrong.

And, what’s with the events? SW had a lot of events, but they were distinct and easy to understand. The events in HoT range all over the place, and you have to finish them to get credit. But, the only way to follow the event runs you through a horrendous number of mobs and other events.

So, my question is, is there a way to disable or remove all HoT content, and get back to the original game?

I’m surprised you haven’t found the new Elite Specs themselves interesting enough to keep playing. I started on my Guardian turned Dragonhunter, and learning to play HoT in comfort was a bit of a curve.

I’ve only played one (Druid), but I turned it off. It provided nothing special, but clashed with my rabid equipment. The ability to become an avatar was worthless, perhaps even negative in value.

Hopefully, at least some of the others are truly elite, and not just repackaged skills of the same power. I can certainly understand the OPs assertion that it’s not valuable.

Suggestion: Achievement for all storylines

Daddicus.6128

Perhaps I wasn’t clear: I mean the storyline that ends with killing Zhaitan. There are millions of ways you can progress through those, but if you run the right number of characters through and carefully choose which missions (when there is a choice), you can get them all with 30 characters.

For example, a human can be a commoner, noble, or street rat. Each of those takes you through the Part I of the storyline. However, each also offers a choice of missions at some point in the story. So, there’s 6 per race, or 30 total needed.

This is the “widest” part of the storyline tree; fewer are needed past level 20.

Title is good, too, but you have to do the first batch 30 times to get them all. 3 paths for each race, 5 races makes 15. But, there are choices in each path, so you need 30.

Beyond that, 10 need to make it as far as the level 50 stuff. And 6 need to finish the whole campaign.

It’s going to take years, so an achievement seems appropriate.

A few things:
1) As you say, “if done correctly”. Most sites do not do it correctly, they allow you to login using only a security code by default, bypassing your password.

2) Security codes are usually just a string of numbers, which is far easier to brute force with current hardware than a randomly generated password. This may not be a problem when logging into a game or website (due to throttling), but it is a problem if the company experiences a data breach after which the security of all information is reduced to how well it can either be exploited or just brute forced.

3) If the server hash and salt algorithms are sufficiently secure, a randomly generated password of a proper length is impossible to break. Most methods of obtaining these passwords revolve around creating collisions, and weaknesses in the hashing and salting algorithms that allow for superfluous collisions to occur.

4) Even when done properly, two-factor authentication presents a significant real life security risk since anyone with access to the confirmation device (typically a phone), will be able to get into your account without the use of a password.

5) Certain third-party services, such as Google voice, have proven to have security issues when used with two-factor authentication.

Knowing about security is not enough, you must also know about programming, and the reason that security issues exist to begin with. Understanding how security holes apply to software helps to know the real risks. Most of the time, the risk is in the software being used, and in these cases it usually bypasses any precautions that a user takes to protect themselves from security-related attacks.

NOTE: This post does not discuss GW2, but two-factor auth in general.

#1: Companies that allow the use of just the code are not using 2FA. 2FA’s definition requires 2 independent authentication methods.

#2: That’s why 2FA requires that the two factors be independent of each other. You can’t brute force something that uses another path to get to the customer, because you have to make an attempt which generates a text message to the customer. The customer should realize that a hack attempt is being made and take appropriate action.

Also, if properly implemented, the second factor follows the similar rules as passwords, in terms of number of attempts per time period. So, you can’t brute force it at all. However, you are quite correct that most companies don’t use good second-factor rules (i.e. they typically send short pure numbers).

#3: This paragraph is mostly correct, but doesn’t apply. It would apply to crack attempts made against the security infrastructure at ANet, not just to one account (unless they stole the security database). ANet seems to have a handle on this part.

#4: Same reply as #1. It’s only true if the second factor of authentication is allowed to stand alone, which means, by definition, it’s not 2FA.

#5: I don’t know about this, so I can’t comment on it.

I am both a programmer and a security pro (although, I’ve done more security work than programming).

I’ll say it again: ANet’s implementation of 2FA is pretty good. The flaw is that the same computer stores both the password and the IP address that allows passage into the game. If you can break into my (for example) network/computer, you can access my computer’s disk, including both the hashed main password and the IP address structure (possibly a certificate) that allows me to not have to get a code each time I log in.

So, they’ve allowed for two ease-of-use functions, each of which marginally reduces security, and together allows an common attack vector (my PC). But, it’s a much more secure system than a simple password unless one uses long, extremely strong, and never reused (for other entities) passwords.

There’s one more hole that neither of us has mentioned: the use of IP address as a way of authentication. ANet allows us to check a box to “remember this computer”. However, unless they’re generating a certificate to validate (I can’t find one), they’re using the simple IP address. Since this web site uses the same internal account name, the IP address of players can be determined by hacking this forum site to gain those IP addresses.

It’s all part of Ventari’s vast conspiracy. A little known fact is that Ventari once used a time/space/dimension transport vehicle (of his own design) to come into the real world. He did not design it correctly, though, so instead of going to Cantha for a little wonton soup, he ended up in Dallas, TX, on Earth in 1963. His rifle accidentally discharged, killing Kennedy, which upset him to no end.

He vowed that never again would he kill, not Centaurs nor humans. But, how to return? His device only worked one way.

He moved to Hill Valley, CA and made contact with one Dr. Emmett Brown, an eminent scientist who would later determine how to travel through time. But, the Doc’s vehicle only traveled through time, not space or dimensions.

Still, he ordered up one from the Doc anyhow. But, by the time the Doc successfully tested his vehicle, DeLorean had gone out of business. So, Ventari chose to use a AMC Pacer instead.

Ventari successfully modified Doc’s design so he could get back to Tyria and his own time. The device flipped over during the transit, but in other aspects, it was an acceptable journey.

Now, this device was also a one-way device, so he took off the wheels and gutted the frame, leaving only the body, which he used as a planter for a new tree he was breeding.

Naturally, since the planter was originally made by humans, when the Pale Tree came of age and her roots absorbed the metal of the Pacer’s body, she also absorbed a pale image of its makers: humans. Thus, all the Sylvari which came from her are shaped like humans.

And now you know … “the rest of the story”.

Go to the green star, just running past bad guys along the way. They don’t chase very far at all, and when you get to the star, there’s usually just a single mob.

Of course, there are several objectives, so you have to fight a half-dozen mobs, but that crowd in the middle only needs to be fought once.

I would like an option to never see this prompt again.

They said they would never sell. If you think they are then you also think they lied to your face. Why would you play a game where you believe they are outright lying to you? Shows lack of common sense to stay in a game where you believe they are lying to you.

It wouldn’t be the first time a game company has lied to their customers. (Or, changed their mind on the subject.)

But ANet has consistently shown for over a decade that they really prefer sticking to their statements. On occasion, they’ve made mistakes that they had to correct (like the “free character slot with HoT pre-purchase” issue). But, they’ve always made the best out of it when they made mistakes. And, when I say “made the best out of it”, I mean from the players’ perspectives.

Finally, waypointing when fully dead has always been an exploit. The game is designed to reward players for playing together, and waypointing out to prevent your colleages from having to revive you is just wrong. It encourages building glass cannons and coupling that with a shoot/die/waypoint strategy. Frankly, they would have been better to lock out waypointing out of combat altogether, like they did in dungeons.

I strongly disagree. If they’re reviving you then they’re putting themselves at risk with an overall DPS and safety loss. The obvious solution would be increasing rez speed. You’re locked out of the boss room if you waypoint away anyway.

Why? I claim it’s an exploit that allows building glass cannons, whose entire purpose is to blast as fast as they can and then waypoint back when dead.

You may “strongly disagree”, but you really should say why it’s NOT an exploit, since you disagree.

I do agree that rez speed should be increased, though. I don’t see any reason why rez speed in combat should be any slower than it is when out of combat. They should correct that problem at the same time as they disallow waypointing out of combat.

Security codes are actually easier to break than passwords. Two-stage authentication is a myth, as you can find on several security sites. Companies usually ask you to do it so they can sell your phone number to a third party for profit.

I’m not saying ArenaNet does this, I’m just saying its the norm.

The only time two-stage auth is secure is when the website requires both the password and the security code, not just one or the other. And even then the security gain from it is marginal at best; in tests it has been found that you are much more likely to get locked out of your own account than it is to be hacked if your password is already randomly generated and of a decent length.

The biggest factors of security are password quality and server salting.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Learn something about security before you speak on the subject.

Two factor authentication (2FA) is far FAR more secure than one-factor, if it’s done correctly. GW2’s 2FA isn’t done perfectly, but it’s far better than a simple password could ever be. (True 2FA requires both elements be 100% independent of each other. GW2’s implementation allows you to store both on the same computer.)

In the not-too-distant future, all Internet transactions will require true 2FA. Credit cards and banking are already moving that direction. Get used to the idea, because it’s coming whether you approve or not.

I mean, we are all entitled to full access to someone else’s livelihood without paying for it. I have this argument every time I need to fly somewhere and I call a taxi. Since my wife normally drives me to the airport, why should I need to pay for the taxi?

It’s complete elitism and infringes my freedom and needs to stop.

Think before you speak. You missed the entire point.

The boons were available pre-HoT for all players to use. Now they were removed, even if you had them before, you lost access to them. Now you have to buy HoT in order to access something you already had.

I think it was satire.

That’s a good point, too.

If any devs read this, the solution is to first lock out waypointing while others are still in combat (see my point 3 above). Then, if all die and WP out, as long as they are heading back in the direction of the event after WPing, they should get credit even if they don’t make it in time for the event ending.

I cannot believe you people. You are arguing for allowing obvious exploits because it interferes with your gaming style? Tagging = leeching, plain and simple. This was an excellent change, one of the best they’ve made in a while.

There are three related issues, though:

First, it doesn’t work on VW. If you go AFK, you get all 3 rewards anyhow, as long as you took part in the main objectives at least a little. Leeches on VW should get no reward for portions in which they took no part. That includes the end chests.

Second, there’s a problem with escort events, especially in SW. If you are going the other direction, you might take part, but you need to continue to your real destination. So, I think they need to make a correction on the escort events.

Crafting 20 Slot Bags

Candycorn appears everywhere in Tyria (except Orr, maybe). But, you get a lot more if you go into the Mad King’s dungeon.

If you go into the dungeon, bring along some copper mining picks (unless you have one of the infinite ones).

You need to get your crafting level up to 400. It takes a while, so you might want to craft bags of size 8 to 18 along the way. Not too many, though, as they’ll become useless once you have 20-slot bags to fill your inventory slots.

Salvage Kits ( lvl 53 bags )

Simpler solution: implement a dial-down effect on salvage kits. The player can choose to not allow upgraded materials beyond a certain tier.

For example, I’m salvaging a tier 2 item, and I’ve dialed my master salvage kit down to 4. I can then receive tier 2, 3, or 4 items, but not higher.

If they did this, it should be implemented as a one-time consumable, I think. It would be pretty valuable to have this, and it will significantly shake up the markets. So, the gem cost should be moderately high. But, once a character has consumed one, they can dial kits to any value they wish from that point forward.

SMS....no thanks.

Umm, I believe you are a victim of DNS hijacking. The toolbar to the right of the Yahoo toolbar appears similar to a certain malware that redirects your web address lookups through the hackers’ servers.

Remove whatever toolbar that is, and then immediately restart (BEFORE removing any others). If it reappears after the computer restarts, it’s malware. If not, I’m wrong.

Combat Dynamics: GW1 Retrospective

I got all 50 points in GW1, but I don’t find myself using the rewards very much. I did it more so I could say I did it. But, some of the rewards are interesting.

I wouldn’t buy the old game just to get the points. But, the lore stuff can be interesting. There are hundreds of places in GW2 where something from GW1 is referenced. In one of those Shiverpeaks zones, there’s a renown event where you have to figure out what the dwarf who is buried there did in life. Without the old game, there’s no chance without either guessing or going to the wiki. But, many of them are well-known to old-time players.

Statues in Black Citadel, a whole set of objects in Fields of Ruin relating to Gwen and Thackeray, etc. But, it’s probably easier to just read about it on the Wiki.

I had the same. I only took the bags for 3 extra and only opened one of them. I doubt they will ban for this; it was their mistake. But, once we realized it, then it’s at least a suspend, I would think.

Hopefully, ANet will make a call and let us know. I hate to destroy a laurel bag, not knowing if I will get it again or if the list is permanently stuck 3 ahead of where it is supposed to be.
