Anyone Else Play like Me

Our playstyles seem to be very similar as I am a roamer too and I enjoy helping others out of tricky situations.

But where I realized we differ is when reading:

My intelligence tests quite high. I’m almost never bored. (and when I say quite high I mean just around the beginning’s of genius level).

I could see some form of Irony but from the context it looks like you really mean this.
From that line on who can take you for serious? Looks like a classic case of narcissism here.

Please correct me.

“I’ve beaten you, but you dont know it yet” is what I only hear.

I play an Asura Engi an he never said “I am defeated..”.

Do you play PvP? I could find only one reference to what you heared. Possibly misheared too or a PvP only line.

There aresome who attempt to list those lines and your line isnt included:

I tend to say too that you’ve misheared just out of my own experience playing an Asura.

By your definition D2 online/D3 can be considered an MMO then right?

1. It is not my definition, its a or the definition which you could find out by yourself

2. We are talking about GW1 and GW2 here

3. As you can read you should be able to answer that question by yourself

GW1 is not an MMO. It is a CORPG. And in 95% of the game you never had to play with other people because of the henchmen and later on heroes.

“CORPG” is a wording invented by Anet back then to better describe the games nature.
And the fact that you could solo most of it is simply a feature.

In other words: A competitive online role-playing game (CORPG) differs from the standard massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) in that they are less focused on the massive group experience.

So CORPG is a subcategory of MMORPG.

Now, who wants to discuss what the word “Massively” could imply? Or maybe “Cooperative”.
Cant you play GW2 solo? Is GW2 not cooperative? Do we want to invent a special category for every online game now?
And what about casino gambling online?

Again, GW1 and GW2 are both games of the same category.

Now if some people feel the need to intervene here in order to stop comparisons between these two theyre standing on very thin ice.

GW2 is miles off what an GW1 enthusiast can expect when hearing
“E v e r y t h i n g you love from GW1 … "

And there is a lot….not in GW2.

GW2 is not bad at all but it doesnt deserve its name.

Where in the genre title “Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game” does it mention anything about open world.

Massively multiplayer…

This is not only a silly answer to that question but also a widespread misinterpretation of “MMORPG” as it means no less than an internet-based computer game set in a virtual world, which can be played by many people at the same time, each of whom can interact with the others by their in-game characters in a roleplaying fashion.

GW1 with its heavy use of instances is no less an MMORPG than GW2.
And even if the open world criteria would apply, then GW2 wouldnt count as one either as every region is an instance too, just as in GW1.
Only difference is the maximum player capacity per region (say 100 intead of 6, respectively 12 for Urgoz etc).

Its basically the same method as used for GW1 which should even be recognized by the most unsavy observer when using a portal.

Now people set a standard for MMORPGs and may expect those to have an “open world” and mean by that a world without loading screens and/or being able to meet others within a region but outside your group.

However, MMORPG =/= Open World =/= MMORPG.

Open World is the perceived result of the technology how the world is being rendered and data processed (streamed, instances etc).

And thats also why GW2 can be compared to GW1 by all means.

For me GW2 is like the new episodes from the star wars saga.
Compared to the old ones its just flat, a clichee and almost a persiflage of itself with stunning visual effects added.

GW2 is like a disney themepark ride of GW1.

GW2 is like a beatiful chick but as soon as she opens her mouth…

Sure, there are things I enjoy and which I find an improvement over GW1.
But GW2 has lost the core what made GW1 so successfull (for me).

It shouldnt even be called “Guild Wars” at all….maybe Tyria Wars /shrug
There is no G U I L D Wars in GW2 and please dont start with that ridiculous lore excuse.
Lore is (should be) the explanation for the game(play) and not the other way round.
But thats just a side note.

Manifesto, Manifesto, Manifestooooo…its PR blabla and PR has ZERO worth.

They simply screwed their old fan base and now try some mish mash to appease everyone…

As far as i know ANET didnt respond to this particular bug, maybe because its just too embarassing.

Im usually not the one pouring salt in a wound but this has just reached SOE/SWG class regarding bug ridden patches.

- Moa stun-exploit

- Health regen food exploit

- achievements not counting

- final reward chest at login (simply the best)

Did I miss something?

Every single one of those oversights are an embarrasement for the QA team, IF there is any.

Its becoming obvious that ANET is struggeling as such an ongoing decline in quality didnt happen during GW1.
I bet the Molten Facility wasnt developed in-house but outsourced.

Victory or Death: What a pathetic ending...

in Personal Story

Posted by: Dafomen.7892

Dafomen.7892

Personally the Zhaitan “fight” was the-most-anti-climatic final boss fight of all games I played.
It may sound good on paper story wise and there may be some logic behind this, like Zhaitan is crippled already at that stage and so on but from a gameplay perspective the final phase was…well….I had a strange feeling of shame.

Maybe because I advertised GW2 to my friends and at that moment hoping they will never see the end of “their” personaly story.

The buildup is well done and during the fight where the risen overrun the ship attacked by the minor dragons I thought “now we are talking baby, cant wait to be grinded into ground by papa-dragon…but I will be back and prepared!”….

I never went back trying to forget about Zhaitan.

Zhaitan should have been a world meta event final on a whole map only dedicated to that final fight and you would only be ale to enter that map if you have done all previous story quests ofc.
And the Zhaithan meta only activates when all temples are free for example….you know, add some kind of “epicness”. ;-)

Secretly I was still having hope…that something is just bugged or not finalized.

Does Karka Queen live up to the hype?

in Last Stand at Southsun

Posted by: Dafomen.7892

Dafomen.7892

I didnt even realize that there was a hype arounf the Krka Queen event.

Or maybe its because I “de-hyped” myself as a result of my whole living story chain experience.

Except from the Molten Facility which blew me away in comparison and litterally

But I wasnt expecting much tho secretly hoping I could be suprised again. Maybe inside the Karka Hive (which offers the perfect scenario for a showdown whereas by now its almost empty except that Ori node to lure at least some up there) instead of a simple event somewhere on the island.

Now the Queen just poof spawns….Unlike that excellent Ogres (iirc) meta event near in SE Ascalon. There you have mutiple event steps leading up to the throne room wich opens at the final event and the big-boss appears. I like!
Not using the Karka-Hive is a missed opportunity big time.

And instead of throwing eggs (ok funny..but also underwhelming) maybe a more indirect mechanic.
Like not having the players do the damage to the Queen, but three Charr cannons maybe which need to be defended and resupplied and maybe some supply camps at the coast where crafters need to produce cannonballs or magic powder from supplies accumulating over time there similar like it is in WvW (you could have some NPCs unloading supplies from a ship too^^)
Then those cannonballs need to be carried to the cannons and the runners need protection and you need some femal dancers to motivate the crafters and Quaggans to tell jokes and so on ;-)

That would be more of an epic fight and requires collaboration which is fun and gives tension.

And when the Queen then dies…man I can imagine people celebrating and dancing.

Oh oooh I nearly forgot…that 10 minutes timer “mechanic” is -sorry- just cheap.

If timer, then just to have a mechanic to end the final event at least somwetime, like “ok, if you didnt make it in one hour the queen will collapse te cave” and the event fails and everyone in the cave dies.

And then make it possible to retry that meta after say 15minutes. Place a huge account daily (or weekly) chest at the end with an random excotic weapon with a small chance for those new skins and watch happy players.

Now, the current leading up events are a good step I’d say.

Eggs too cough but Anet should trust the GW2 community being able to solve more difficult tasks than that

Why there should be a dps meter

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Dafomen.7892

My first argument is that gw2 is ultimately a game focused on self-progression

Beeep, wroong. Its ultimatively focused on having fun….pure, simple fun!
(UNlike most MMos out there)

My second argument is based on a philosophy of group interaction.

Its called group discrimination what you describe and its not a philosophy, its a mindset. Interaction is something else.
And you even aknowledge the elitism which comes with such a system but weight this less than your desire to ‘optimize’.
I understand…like those 3W+1M CoFp1 professors who spam the mapchat for 10 minutes for the last ‘optimized’ spot so they can rush the dungeon in super effective 3 minutes less than a PUG needs.
You mean the hardcore elite super pro farmers…which we know Anets loves so much.

First you talk about self -progression and then you talk about the ability judging others .

And you mix in the word ‘fair’ dismissing the fact that there is a training area in LA where you can have your ‘self-progression throu numbers’, all you need is a pen and paper.

Well I guess you know by now that I am not convinced by your arguments and I hope Anet isnt either

Well, its basically just poor DE design.

After a good decade of online gaming even ANET should have gotten the memo “if its possible, players will do it”.

So if ANET doesnt like it, its up to them to fix it a.s.a.p.

After all I still believe we are playing a game here [for fun?] and not being in a police state environment…

And with all those DE events bugged in the past months its still hard to distunguish what may be intended by ANET and what not.

Is the Dredge Fractal Design Intentional?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Dafomen.7892

In my book infinite spawns in dungeons are the cheapest of the cheap game mechanics.

Basically its the devs cheating players and then acting suprised that players try to find ways to circumvent these and may even call it exploit if the alternative turns out being too effective.

And….Immersion = 0 (where do they all come from, endless breeding room or what the…aaawww…)

And btw, breaking line of sight to lure a ranged mob by using obstacles is 1×1 in gaming and certainly not an exploit.

If it wasnt intended then the leveldesigner was just very sloppy to say it mildly.

Apart from those seemingly endless spawns in that dredge fractal, I quite enjoy the rest of it.

Yes, I said it!

What's the best way to expend karma?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

If you dont go for a legendary, why the urge to spend karma anyway? To get gold…for what? Apart from repair and waypoint cost you dont need gold to play GW2.

Long story short: I am simply waiting because ANET will eventually add more options to get stuff for karma in upcoming updates and expansions and maybe karma will then be useful and truly become an all-around currency.

Then the day may come where you think “oh noes, if I only didnt waste all that karma back then”.

And if not, you can still spend it on those karma-sink-boxes.

Daily DR reset timing

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Dafomen.7892

In GW1 I experienced getting exceptionally better loot the less players are online, meaning during nighttime/early morning.
When I farmed during peak times the loot was quite bad.

So if there is a say 1% chance of certain rare loot divided amongst 100 or 1000 players, it would make a difference, wouldnt it?

Unfair? Yes, but making loot dependable on active players would be some sort of inflation-control I guess.

I am not so much into farming anymore, but it wouldnt surprise me the same happening in GW2.

I had heroes to do that, and never had to think about it. Since you had heroes, it didn’t matter. As for tanking, there was no true tanking in Guild Wars 1, since there was no taunt mechanic. That’s what I really liked. I never particularly minded healers, but I’ve always disliked the tanking mechanic.

I’m pretty sure I could give you a good run on how many hours of Guild Wars 1 I played.

Ok, it seems we are talking about different things now.

I was referring to having a dedicated healer (monk, ritu, necro… yada yada) in your group (hero or player) not being optional in GW1 whereas you stated in GW2 you dont need a healer at all and OP was asking about things you like in GW2 coming from GW1.

Anyway, my misunderstanding i guess so we can leave it like that

The feel of the world.

For me the world in GW2 feels much less…..melancholic than in GW1.
Its epic, yes…..and very childish in GW2.
Its not a bad thing per se and actually funny at most, but surely not the same as it was in GW1 apart from those exception like Joko

That you don’t need a tank or healer.

That you don’t need a tank or healer.
That you don’t need a tank or healer.

Yea, the fact that you don’t need a tank or a healer really makes this one of my favorite games

Either you didnt understand OPs question or you didnt play GW1 at all because in every outpost there were groups spamming “GLF monk” because you needed mostly 2 healers per group. Tanks had their place too, but you could make it without one.

All in all GW2 is a completely different and good game, not awesome as GW1 turned out to be, but GW2 is still very young…lets not forget that fact

Very nice artistically tho some areas are a bit too unaccessible compared to the rest of the open world where you can get everywhere intuitively.

Its a welcome change from all those Risen and corrupted ice mobs at lvl 80 and I like it not being crowded by DE farmers like Orr.

Every time I walk around that huuuuge Karka lair I wonder why Anet doesnt make that event repeatable, similar to the dragon events maybe (thats the only “negative” I can think about).

If one follows the Flame&Frost story, we can expect some change with those refugees settling down there, hopefully they wont ruin the “natural flair” there

It’s the fact that you think that ANet didn’t think about us having a “fair system” ahead of time, which they did but a few things didn’t work out and there was no way to know that before hand. And that my friend is life.

Thats a rather thin attempt to straighten up your initial response which is a chewed up response with no other purpose but to start an unfair polemic.

Apart from that there are countless other rating systems already out there with a whole science behind the subject to keep competitive ratings, you know, fair as otherwise no one would participate.

Anet just didnt bother to deal with the obvious problem of server population as a key factor (not “few things”) in the whole WvW system other than offering free transfers for a while and now to the lower pop servers every now and then.

With this in mind the statement “there was no way to know that before hand” is somewhat naive.

But i thank you too…because now i killed enought time to dwelve myself into WvW again after the reset, so please don’t expect another response to your thought out reactions….my friend.

They, like everyone else at ArenaNet, work really hard.

Everyone I know in the gaming industry is working hard (really), because they love creating (and playing) games (cough not talking necessarily about management now cough) .

But working “really hard” is worth nothing if they don’t deliver.

Then working “really hard” means “trying to keep up to not loose the job”.

And working for Anet, one should do their best, because there are many others who could do the same and probaly even better (for less money even…looking to the eastern part of the world).

Soooo…make sure you’re getting payed in future too!

For my part, I am looking forward to the 3rd installation of that Living-Story (because its still included in my initial purchase of the game…free stuff added=great!) and hope you’ll get more resources and time for future projects and a better PR.

they have already stated that there may be a levelcap increase someday which is not a big surprise now they’ve changed direction to gear-progression instead of skill-progression like in gw1.

and i think anet will take the “safe” road and abandon everything I loved about gw1, just like they promised….oh…wait….

aaah well….somehow i have the feeling the gw2 team is completely seperate from gw1 team…as if there are two anet divisions…one good and one evil ehehe

all i know is as soon as i have to reequip all over again because of a levelcap increase im gone and anet will have a place on that list where that glowstick mmo-company has the most recent entry

The Living Story - far too vague.

The key to understanding the understanding issue is in their recent blog on the Living Story. What they have given us so far are ‘teasers’, not actual content. There is also a reference to developers rolling off other projects now available to expand upon the story. The monthly events had to happen as they are a key value proposition for Anet. So, absent the ability to provide actual content, they occurred as ‘teasers’. I would expect the content to be fleshed out more properly over time and this should make the story more understandable. TLDR: You haven’t been able to get it because there has been nothing to get.

Correct.

If this is the case, Anet should have:

- titled the event otherwise, because “living” is something else (evolving?)

and Anet shouldnt have:

- announced the living story being something epic and…oh sooo exciting

but rather decribe it for what it really is: a teaser (or a live test but that would be too honest)

and voila…lot of confusion and disappointment goes pooof

the problem is that (mmo) companies exaggerate every tiny update to something new and groundbreaking for the world and then wonder, why their customers are disappointed.

In Short, What Would You Change in the PS?

in Personal Story

first I was following the storyline and tried to find that immersion feeling which in fact did arise…very briefly tho.. during the first missions (new game, excitement….)

but then, after having thrown another character into the story with whom I couldnt connect because those characters tend to disappear as fast as they appeared, i started to loose interest in them.

the turning point was TRAHEARNE where i was just shocked how bad not even that character story (yeah, im firstporn blant, all bow to me…zzzzz) was but also the voice acting (i could feel sorry for the actor but i guess he got his money for that so….).

my first playthrou I picked (as many did) the order of whispers and there was the o.n.l.y. character I liked, my mentor. but hey….we got rif of him too in an clichee scene where he hold off the risen so we can escape. yeaaah, suuuuure. how long did he hold them off? 2 seconds? IF that would have been MY personal story with MY choices i would have send trahearne outside that door and grab my mentor to escape.

well to sum it up, I completely lost interest after the battle of claw island and the very anticlimatic final battle with zaithan just added to this feeling “omg, when is this finished”.

its very sad, because there are some very good aspects in the story and some interesting characters and mission, but you can count them with one hand.

so what would i change?

get a good story-writer AND in addition a good cutscene-dev as many cutscenes (i mean those where the camera swings around) are very, very badly done and sometimes even the music/sound is missing (remember how you left claw island after that battle in that silent ship wobbeling around without sound like, you know, a ship sailing in water-sound).

oh and i would integrate all dungeon story parts into the PC-line, because now (as already described perfectly in an post above) the dungeon story is too detached.

somehow i feel the PC isnt a main aspect of the game, its just to have some kind of lore and story…like “here player there you are and oh thats zaithan. please press that one button 100 times and we’re done.”

thats the bottom line

Would you pay a subscription to play GW2?

No!

SWG was the only game i payed (gladly) the monthly fee, because it offered a lot and GW2 doesnt even come close to that.
On the other hand GW2 is just perfect for a B2P game and I will most likely buy every expansion for it and some gem cards.
(But if there will be a level cap raise or further ascended-like gear “progression” I (as an avid GW1 fan) will quit GW2 completely.)
