Yea, I played Tera for a while before GW2 released and I will admit that it is easily some of the best combat in an MMO, especially if you like to tank or heal. The graphics are also very shiny.
However, everything else is pretty much utter crap.
Worst of all is that the game is a huge grindfest where the person with the rarest armor wins the fight. This is particularly sad because the game’s combat mechanics are such that if the stat differences between gear/level weren’t so absurd, then it skill would be the prevailing factor in victory/defeat.
This is hilarious. Wait till the last, very last second. I got my title on the 4th. They said the 30th. You have no one to blame but yourself. People that wait till the last seond to do things in life fail.
…except that this is a video game where not everyone can prioritize something like this as high as you can.
And I’m pretty sure your ability to grind out all the achievements from SAB in 4 days doesn’t make you any more prepared for life. The people with full lives that consist of full time jobs/kids/college/all of that together/etc. that have very limited play time, I’m sure are getting through life just fine.
My point is these forums are full of “I’m going to blame Arenanet” posts. They laid out the time rather clear. Maybe not down to the minute, but this post shouldn’t exist.
For the people that just didn’t have time cause of work or whatever I do understand, but this has been scheduled since the day SAB was released. We all knew the 30th was the day.
I understand being disappointed but people need to start taking some personal accountability and stop acting like children.
The SAB was advertised to run through the month. There was no communication saying that it would end before this.
You may have an issue with the general QQ that happens on forums, and that’s fine, but this isn’t the same with someone who doesn’t like a nerf to their class.
It’s not the player’s fault if they miss out on an achievement just because ANet did something different than what they said they were going to do. It’s understandable if players who are affected by something like this are unhappy and there’s nothing wrong with them coming here to express that.
Rangers are inherently disadvantaged at dps regardless of what spec you use.
Yea, the 1h sword looked really appealing to me before the game released. I still stuck out the class and tried to make it work for a long time (played ranger from Beta until a month or two ago) until I finally rerolled.
Now that I’ve used mesmer 1h sword and thief 1h sword, I can’t see going back to ranger.
So my thief just downed a ranger.
After almost downing it, the rangers pet interrupts me, then starts chasing me around as I try and kill it. Then downs me with a 6k hit.
Then it proceeds to rez the downed ranger, then they both destroy me.
Fun fun fun!
Use the new Larceny Strike to steal boons and survive. Pets don’t do any more damage than they did before.
or, do like a good thief should and flee from a fight you’re losing.
The survivability buffs are great for PvP, where Rangers were fine.
The pet buffs are great for all PvE builds (especially BM), but they do nothing for berserker builds.
In PvE, rangers still bring sub-par damage with no buff to a berserker build. However, spirits may be a viable utility to make them worth taking now.
This is hilarious. Wait till the last, very last second. I got my title on the 4th. They said the 30th. You have no one to blame but yourself. People that wait till the last seond to do things in life fail.

[snip]
VS A THIEF
[snip]….they mainly have 2 stealths, one is a short one that can easily be countered by creating clones and dodging, or using number 5 greatsword skillbar, then theres the refuge skill which makes them stay in the stealth circle until its done, this can easily be countered by a sword by slashing randomly within that circle, also by number 5 greatsword skillbar move and number 2 sword skillbar.
what???
You do know that thiefs have a lot more than just 2 stealths right? You also know that the number of stealths they have varies greatly depending on build, right?
Search and Rescue doesn’t revive downed allies.
Wtf is the point in using the skill anymore?
Pretty boss unjustified nerf.
Yea, I just noticed that…
I guess they did that because pet survivability jumped up considerably to prevent a BM ranger with Guard from rezzing a lot in dungeons?
Still, I don’t think this was needed…kinda sad…
Seriously? Is the viability of a thief in CoF really being judged over a 10 second discrepency between videos?
Best patch in a long time for rangers…but I still don’t think it’s enough to get me fully back to playing my ranger as my main.
What???
Stealth adds depth to the game. If you don’t see this, then you probably don’t understand how stealth works in this game.
Fighting someone who has stealth involves using additional strategy, not less. The same goes with stealth.
Stealth isn’t something that can be spammed infinitely without cost. If you don’t understand how that is so, feel free to roll a thief.
The problem with swiftness is that everyone thinks they’re entitled to it without having to make any tradeoffs.
You want 100% swiftness? Runes of the centaur and 5 points in acrobatics. That’s much better than what most other classes have to do, especially since theifs already have a 25% run sig.
Like what other classes? Mesmer? They don’t really need swiftness that much, most of there attacks and spells are ranged. Movement speed doesn’t matter much when moving backwards and kiting.
Wait…are you arguing for swiftness to benefit combat? Since when were thieves lacking in combat mobility???
I’m talking about swiftness as a method of getting from point a to point b in a map quickly.
Also, let’s take a moment to just look at this quote again:
Movement speed doesn’t matter much when moving backwards and kiting.
That’s a very special quote. Let’s look at it one more time:
Movement speed doesn’t matter much when moving backwards and kiting.
Movement speed doesn’t matter for kiting…yea…I don’t even know where to start with that, lol.
I understand the nerf to mug.
However, offsetting the damage loss with a 2k heal doesn’t really fit well with the class mechanics. Instead, just lower the cd as many others have suggested. Let the utility we gain from stealing assist our survival.
If the devs still think we need more survival buffs after reducing the steal cd, then there are plenty of other ways to do it. Hell, you could even reduce the cd by 10 seconds then give a 1.5k heal or something like that instead of a 2k one.
The problem with swiftness is that everyone thinks they’re entitled to it without having to make any tradeoffs.

The devs wanted to lower the burst of mug, which is fine with me. However, if it was me, I would have just lowered the cooldown while removing the ability to crit. This would offset the burst while increasing the damage to offset the dps loss. At the same time, this would allow thiefs to use their unique ability more often.
I know the heal was added because the devs want to increase thief defense. I agree that this is an issue that needs to be addressed, but just adding a heal to the ability is a clunky way to do this. Decreasing the cooldown instead would still assist with defense since so many stolen abilities grant defensive utility.
I like this idea
It has come to my attention that this uses a different model than the blue Jellyfish that happens to look Kitten EXACTLY the same.
I am planning on fixing this within the next month but needed to get some feedback from rangers about their feelings about their HoM rainbow jellyfish pets changing how they look. I can assume that they will be happy, but you know what happens when you assume.
Post your thoughts on this internet forum thread and I will read them.

Jon…buddy…out of all the issues rangers have, are you sure this is really where you need to be devoting resources?
I mean, I think it’s safe to say that the skin on an underwater pet is pretty low on the priority list right now.
The biggest problem with most people forming CoF speed run groups is that they seem to miss the point. If you’re looking to clear CoF as efficiently as possible, then yes, min/maxing DPS for faster clears is important. However, time and time again, I see the focus put only on this aspect when so many other things slow down groups much more:
- People coming with full bags or not being able to manage their bag space.
- People taking afks between or during runs
- People switching characters on the end boss to get tokens on an alt
- People dropping group because the class composition doesn’t meet exactly what they want
- People dropping group after just 1 or 2 runs when the rest of the group intends to do more
If you’re really so concerned with having fast runs, you will always do better to have a list of friends that you have run with to contact when making groups.
Getting bent out of shape or spending a ton of time group hopping just because you don’t want a group that has even 1 player of a different profession really makes no sense. I think the OP in this thread confirms that.
Do you have your trait/weap setup somewhere handy?
Please? I’m just curious, as I run full zerker thief for everything yet don’t come anywhere near the damage output seen in the video. Just want to maximize my potential
check out his buff bar, lots of might stacks. I’m assuming that’s from the mesmer, fgj, and 3 steals with thrill all at the same time. If you want max damage go 25-30-x or 30-30-x. max dps, same thing but with 10 in sa
Yea, it looks like he’s running something similar to this:
Seems right, I do believe that he’s running 25/30/0/0/15 to get the extra 3 initiative which helps keep his initiative about 6 ( for the extra damage bonus of first strike, 25 in crits. )
And out of curiosity, I noticed you put force/accuracy, is that really the “recommended” or what you use ? I typically had force + a sup blood for the 250 extra power. Which could be swapped for something else after it hit 25 stacks. ( I do realize that in CoF you might not even hit 25 stacks, which is why it might not be recommended specifically there. )
Accuracy/Force is something I’ve seen a lot of, but idk for sure what is the 100% min max best sigil combo (my thief isn’t even 80 yet).

This thread is proof that Thief traits are awesome. Few classes have so many viable alternatives for their builds.
It may have also been a D/D Thief using Cloak and Dagger to proc stealth off of hitting you but we can’t really be too sure without a little more detail of the fight.
What did your combat log say? Was it Backstab that killed you? Did you ever get hit by Black Powder followed by Heartseeker? What about Shadow Shot or Cloak and Dagger?
Yea, it definitely sounds like the thief was waiting for stealth to run out, then using Cloak and Dagger (offhand dagger skill #5) to re-stealth.
Yea, I could definitely see having some sort of charge shot for this.
Warriors are PvE kings because of how imba their dps is.
No. Just no.
The other guy got it right. Currently kings of PvE are guardians and mesmers. Just because so much of dungeon content designed around projectile reflection. Forget about cof snore-mode.
Warriors are just dps-class. You can easily replace warrior with any other profession. You will lose some speed, but will retain all the functionality.
Exactly. Depending on the encounter, projectile reflect >>>>>> 100B+WW. Negate incoming damage and deal damage at the same time? Yes, please!
You’re missing the point. Yes, reflection is the best utility that you can bring to a group. That’s why you want a guardian and maybe a mesmer too. That’s 1-2 party spots…but for the other 3-4 spots, no other class compares to warriors.
Just because a warrior doesn’t do everything better than every other class doesn’t negate that they are the best at performing the most important role by a huge margin.
guardian
mesmer
warrior
elementalist
necro
theif
rangerin that order. also, all the people talking about rangers – the ranger we run with is a beast. i guarantee she would outplay 2/3rds of anyone in this thread. guaranteed. the class may be kitten but to take an empty spot over any ranger is a pretty kitten kitten mode statement.
Warrior
Guardian
Mesmer
Engineers
Elementalist
Thief
Necro
Ranger
Warriors are PvE kings because of how imba their dps is. You want at least 1 Guardian in most dungeons, but you want several warriors in all dungeons.
Engineers are often underrated, but they are the best condition dealers in the game and can keep up more vulnerability stacks than anyone else. They also have the highest ranged dps when played right.
Necros are second to last simply because they are outdone on conditions by Engineers and Thiefs can do more damage than them, even if they are squishy.
This is one of the main reasons I didn’t roll an engineer when the game released.
Rocket boots during early WotLK got me spoiled and going from something that shoots you around at breakneck speed to something that makes you look like a total doofus every time was a big disappointment.
It really depends on your build and what content you are working on.
If you’re doing PvE dungeons, then a short bow or axe/offhand is a solid choice since there are plenty of fights that are very melee unfriendly.
If you’re roaming in WvW, then axe/horn or sword/horn are both solid choices since the swiftness from the warhorn is great for travelling the large maps. That being said, a short bow or longbow are good to have if you travel with large packs since zerg fights eat melee for breakfast.
If you’re debating between axe or sword to go with warhorn, then it’s really a matter of preference since they’re both solid options. The axe will give you more of an offensive edge with a condition build, but if you go that way, you may want a torch as offhand instead of axe. If you’re PvP focused, then the 1h sword can be a great defensive option.
Finally, if you’re running a BM focused build, the 1h sword may be a strong option since you stack might on your pet with the main attack.
tl;dr They’re all viable options, but which is best will depend on your build and what content you’re running.
Edit:
I’ve gotten in some trouble before about giving hints and releasing info early… so I’m going to leave that up to the people in charge if they want to do those things :x
That sucks. Communication about class balance is good and it’s something that ANet doesn’t do enough of. As long as you don’t phrase things like they’re a promise (like Jon Peters did) and just give us an outline of the goals that devs are working towards, it really helps the community.
Also, you’ve do a great job of keeping us in the loop with stuff. While I still wish there was more communication, I remember what the forums were like before you started getting involved. Thank you.
Prior experience keeps me skeptical, but this is still good news. Hopefully ANet comes through this time around. I’d like to come back to my ranger some day.
Mesmers are akward and relatively weak at low levels. If you’re rolling one, either perservere through the lower levels or level up quickly by crafting.
As for how to play it, find a build you like and jump in a dungeon with it. Mesmers are much more fun to play in groups than solo.
When it comes to shattering or not shattering, this depends on your build. If you go for a shatter-focused build with 30 in illusions, then shatter as much as possible. If you go for more of a phantasm build, then work on getting your phantasms up and keep them up to maximize dps. There’s always exceptions to this, but you’ll pick up on it after you play the class for long enough.
Just got this achievement today and I thought of this. Still cracks me up!
PvE: Berserker
PvP: A mix of gear with condition damage
This is one of the reasons why it’s so hard to play my ranger after rolling my mesmer. The mesmer auto attack stacks vulnerability and hits for solid damage. The number 2 ability does burst damage while making me invulnerable for 2 seconds (with a very short cooldown), and the 3 button works as a gap closer without me needing to already be on top of my enemy.
If it was up to me, I would fix the ranger 1h sword with a small change: Take the leap off the 1 attack and put it on the 2 ability. The leap back wards then forwards for the 2 ability would then combo after using the leap forwards. This would A) allow the auto attack to work without rooting you and
give the weapon a decent gap closer.

I think I remember seeing a picture on ANet’s Facebook where one of the devs had her dog in a bee costume. Is this the influence for the dog-bees or was it the other way around?
Request: Can you put in another bonus level like the cart smashing, but instead make it sorta like the bonus levels in Golden Axe where you have to whack gnomes for baubles?
=D
Yes. Orr is my absolute least favorite area in the game.
Really? Do we seriously need another thread on this?
I mean, I guess if there are still people out there that think rangers are a ranged exclusive class just because the word “range” is in their name, then I guess so. That being said, this is a myth that’s been busted to hell.
Yes, the word “ranger” is a derivative of the word “range”, but that’s because it’s regarding a person who watches over a range of area and has nothing to do with using a ranged weapon.
Look, just read what this guy posted and let’s be done with this thread:
http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=174432
I’ll second (err…third?) this. Jumping puzzles are a rather unique aspect of this game and I think they deserve a title.
@ Halanna: Do you mean to turn off the display of other people’s titles? If so, I’ll second this as well.
You could always go power/prec/crit damage and just stack your vit elsewhere such as by replacing a piece of armor. Unless you’re running vit on every piece you wear, this shouldn’t be a problem. It’s inconvenient, but should at least solve the problem in the interim.
Solid podcast. Thanks for putting in the work to make this available for the community!
Oh lord, another angry lil Tolkienian having to change the world to appease Lord Tolkien. I think you really need to put down the keyboard and read up on actual history.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_mythology <—- learn something. Mythology is where Tolkien ripped his idea’s from.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artemis <—- oh look, the original Ranger motif.Meanwhile, the conversation was about potential’s, not absolutes. Whomever said a Ranger can’t Melee? Did anyone write that? NO….. no one did. This is about what they are BEST at. So get off your high horse. Or just admit, you want to melee on the Ranger and be done with it. Because I’m done with this thread.
Where Tolkien got his ideas from is irrelevant since the point was that the example of Aragorn is a clear example of a ranger not being restricted to melee.
Even if it didn’t, neither of your links refer to those concepts being applied to the ranger.
If you think that rangers should have melee only as a supplement to ranged because that’s what you’re more familiar with, then that’s fine. I have no problem with you holding that opinion, even though I disagree.
However, I do hold issue with trying to assert that opinion with flawed logic and use of irrelevant sources:
- This is not the only MMO to highlight rangers as fully melee capable
– Historical and mythological figures such as Artemis are not and were not called rangers, even if they did influence the current archetype of rangers wielding bows.
Let’s also clear up another little myth: The word “ranger” did come from the word range, but it had nothing to do with attacking or fighting at range. It came from protecting an area (range).
http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=ranger
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/ranger
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ranger
And this guy sums up the argument better than I do:
http://forums.ddo.com/showthread.php?t=174432
And if you want to get back to the original point, then it doesn’t matter if you think that rangers should have less dps doing melee unless you can persuade Jon Peters on this. I started this thread because as it stands, the ranger class does not hold up to what he stated is the case in the game:
Jon Peters:“Hey all. I wanted to talk about this a bit since it is a hot topic here and also on the internets. The intention is that both styles are viable. Certainly right now Melee is more difficult than ranged. There are some things we will try to do to address this, but I think the more you play you would find they are closer than you think.
First what’s already there:
1) Melee does more damage. Melee damage is simply higher than ranged damage across the board.
2) Melee has more control. With a few intentional exception Melee has a lot more control than ranged.
What Melee needs:
1) defensive tools on more weapons, particularly on lower armor professions.
2) ai needs to favor Melee a bit less than it currently does.
What else:
Finally because of the more action based nature of combat Melee needs to be taught better. Effective Melee requires skills that translate over from FPS games which are notoriously harder on casual players. You have to wasd to move, constantly aim with your mouse camera, and hit skills on 1-5.”

Umm…. for “long enough” you ask? Your references are how young? A handful of video games aren’t relevant to a couple of thousand years of theology/mythology. From my point of view Aragorn is probably one of the worst example of a Ranger I can think of. Especially when most people, if asked, would probably say Legolas was the Ranger of the movies. When you as the observer have to be told specifically what the character is, it’s a failure. :-)
Why are we even arguing of this? The point is, Archery is a Ranger’s most prolific and well known skill set. It will not change because of some video games. That’s all I’m saying.
Are you a troll? Do you seriously believe this?
And for how long? Lord of the Rings was published in the 50s for christ’s sake. And of course Aragorn is a ranger. He’s specifically named as a ranger. Don’t argue this if you haven’t even read the kitten book.
As for the games, Neverwinter Nights came out in 2002, which is before even WoW (when the MMO genre actually started to get some attention), so that argument doesn’t hold any water either.
Look, you expect a ranger to be ranged because the word “range” is in the name and rangers are often portrayed with bows. That’s fine, but don’t try to rationalize your narrow minded and ignorant perspective that over-extends and this to think that rangers don’t melee, never melee, can’t melee, and/or shouldn’t melee. You’re either decidedly ignorant or new enough to this genre to not know examples of rangers that engage in melee combat and there’s nothing wrong with that, but for pity’s sake, you don’t need to continually reinforce this pitiful argument that has plentiful counter examples, especially if you’re just going to try to reinforce your argument with baseless assumptions that most people agree with you.
^Yes, I understand this is their sandbox. And No, one single game does not represent a semantic change. If another MMO comes along and does a Ranger justice though, people will move toward it.
For the roundhouse kick, OMG… AWESOME IDEA! Yes please!!!! :-) Let’s name just, CN.
Rangers as melee isn’t a new concept. Aragorn is probably the most popular example, but see the below additional examples of Rangers that melee in MMOs:
Aion
http://gameguide.na.aiononline.com/aion/Ranger
“Not only can a Ranger expertly wield a bow, but can make good use of a sword and dagger for close combat. "
Age of Conan
http://www.conanmmorpg.com/pages/rogue-archetype/ranger.php
“Skilled at dual wielding clubs, daggers or swords the Ranger can certainly hold their own up close. "
Elsword
http://news.mmosite.com/content/2013-02-14/trapping_ranger_class_arrives_in_elsword.kittenml
“The Trapping Ranger features a flexible set of ranged and close combat skills in addition to these traps.”
Neverwinter Nights
http://nwn.wikia.com/wiki/Ranger
“Despite popular perception and BioWare’s prestige class tip, the ranger is not intrinsically better suited to archery than melee combat.”
Neverwinter
http://feature.mmosite.com/neverwinter/ranger.kittenml
“Rangers in the 4th edition of D&D retain their ability to specialize in Archery or Two Weapon Fighting (respectively called Archer Rangers and Two Blade Rangers) through the Fighting Style class feature.”
And even the wikipedia definition of rangers includes melee:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranger_
“Archery and (often dual-wielding) swordplay are common to rangers…”
So can we finally put this argument to rest? Rangers can melee and this is nothing new. If you haven’t heard of this, you probably haven’t been following the fantasy genre of books/movies/games/roleplay for long enough.
Ugh, seriously? Does this tired old argument have to pop up any time someone mentions a ranger using a melee weapon?
Look, ANet decided that they want rangers to be able to use melee weapons. They also said that they believe melee should generally do more dps than ranged due to the extra risk associated with being up close to enemies. Neither of these points have anything to do with your pre-conceived notions of the word “Ranger”.
ANet could decide that they want Rangers to wield baskets while prancing around wearing bonnets as they drive around on motorcycles and they can do that if they want. They design the game; you don’t.
Also, definitions of words change over time and often mean things completely different than what they used to mean.
Yeah, we removed the minimap for a reason. There are several factors that make 8 and 16 bit games feel the way they do. One of them is forcing the player to really learn their environment.
I can understand this and agree that this is a solid decision. However, it would be nice to have some other way to find out where allies are when they are too far away to see their name or text bubbles. =)
This is supposed to be how you trigger the hard mode if/when it’s released.
Just for a bit more Engineer love. Has your wife compared the pistol auto-attack to the elixir gun autoattack?
Pistol auto:
- 0.5 sec
- Damage 118 (tooltip on gw2skills.net)
- Bleeding (2 sec)
- Radius: 120
- Elixir Gun auto:*
- 0.75 sec
- Damage: 130 (tooltip on gw2skills.net)
- Bleeding (4 sec)
- Weakness (1 sec)
I know she has both equipped, but I’m not sure when/how much she uses either since I don’t play eng myself. I think she attacks primarily with the grenade kit, but beyond that, I’m not sure.
I feel like I should have learned all the secrets to SAB from reading a Nintendo Power magazine. Instead, they’re all listed online, lol.
Ahh, I miss the days when there was a reason to buy an actual physical magazine on gaming…
Pro-tip: Shoot at it until it dies.
Yep, the good old days, where the magazines knew scarcely more than you did, there was no such thing as a “patch” even though bugs were a reality, and the concept of a save game just didn’t exist on most platforms :p
Wait… the good old days really wern’t so good
Nah, I’m talking about the Up, Down, Up, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A secret codes type stuff.
(p.s. would be awesome if doing this actually was some sort of cheat code for SAB)
I am planning on fixing this within the next month but needed to get some feedback from rangers about their feelings about their HoM rainbow jellyfish pets changing how they look. I can assume that they will be happy, but you know what happens when you assume.
