I have to agree with OP. I actually find GW2 combat much more boring than in mmo with holy trinity, especially in PvE. Now everyone has one role and its dps. So what that we have evasion, it does not add that much.
And tactics? Give me a break. Stand at one hell of a big boss mob and spam all your skills, evade some attacks, so awesome..

Remember Colin Johanson joke about other mmos? “I swong a sword?..” Well that is a joke on GW2 now

Well to be honest, removing holy trinity didn’t change anything, it just made everything more zergish. So no, there was no innovation here.

Because spammig 4 skills in a “rotation” and side step from an obvius danger zone is soooooooo exciting.

My point was that poor soul based his game experience on that he needs to face tank everything, help ressing up team mates that fail to dodge the same way and lives in a delusional state, where utility skill are just class based, not build based and used it in a wrong way. Also stating 4k dps is something, he lacks overall knowledge about the game (game mode exactly).
This isn’t helps that even that kind of players who are faaaaaaar from the so called “optimal zerker meta builds” still can crawl up in so called “hard content”.
Also as my tiny tale explains, build diversity exist. You can play as a dire ele too, spamming 1 skill on cooldown and succed still. But the amount of time it takes is more, thus it risky and gives more room for error.

tl;dr: there is no need for the holy trinity in pve, since everything is viable and you can succed with it.

Not so long ago i met a dire ele in fractals (don’t get a heart attack as i did almost, he linked full ascended) and we started to talk about builds and stuff.
He can’t be convinienced that for example a zerker ele can use Sandstorm too to mitigate damage, because it’s a “damage skill for condi users” and he is awesome, because his tanky gear enables to ress people while can keep up 4k dps with 24 stacks of bleed after each pull with Eruption spam.

Moral of the story? Learn to play? I guess.

seriously how the hell do these people get that high? I had a similar issue with mossman\cliff\dredge at 36.
on that related note my group in that situation had a war camping GS/LB and a thief that shared venom(you only use this if you’re condi spec) and didn’t know how to use stealth AT ALL let alone combo fields. I didn’t finish that one and I wish I just left on swamp.

The content isn’t that hard, especially lvl49 compared to other one above 40, so they can be carried.

The minimum standard for QA should be “did you try this even once?” It’s quite impressive how Anet’s QA department continually fails to meet this standard.

That being said the original troll boss was pointless AFK fest so a tougher boss here sounds like a good change.

Since they removed the QA department to a third party agency, i’m not surprised at all.

I want the PvE game to play differently based on my class, build and gear.

And it doesn’t.

Except it does. You can infact facetank (most of the content) when built defensively, try doing that with a full glass build. And are you suggesting full bunker cleric or PVT AH guard plays the same as the dps guard meta build?

They play the same to me.

My main’s a guardian.
I build defensively and auto attack with hammer to keep the symbol and protection up. Target falls over dead. Dodge when necessary.
I build glassy and use three more buttons (F1, 2, and 4) to keep the target blind while my sword autoattack kills it. Dodge when necessary.

I mean this completely without sarcasm… If I’m missing something please tell me. I honestly want to play again. But its just so stale to me.

Try to blind bosses in fractals.

Out of curiosity, what is the highest damage that a boss can do against let’s say a zerker ele? Since everybody else would take less damage than an ele.
Mossman’s double chop and Lupi kick seems to be the top2. Anything else?

And yes, that class-specific heal on a 30 sec cd is a good window of opportunity for trash mobs to smack you down when you’ve had to dodge their endless CC.

Half of them shorter than 30s (19 exactly out of 32 skills) and you can CC trash mobs easily. Protection and weakness helps too, along with blinds. Of course, you can dodge too.
If you personally have issues to not even unable to kill trash mobs in 30 seconds, but the need to use your heal skills, i smell some l2p issue. No offense, it’s just sounds that way. Any detail what class and build are you using?

There are different options for classes? The majority of dungeon groups only care about berserker stats, nothing else. The way these dungeons are designed and the lack of a trinity only makes ONE build viable for each class. Why bother going tank/healer when you can have 5 warriors hitting 2 on GS every 6 seconds?

Yes, there are. A lot of build is viable, however there are only a few that is optimal.
The whole concept about combat is that every class is capable to do every role (damage, support and control) more or less, which means they are self reliant. Are you aware of the fact, that every class and every build has a self heal skill?

Even GW1 had a class purely for healing, which meant problems in missions/dungons were solved and your entire team didn’t have to suffer the dreaded ‘wipe’ every 4 seconds because of the lack of an aggro system. There is no dedicated healing class in this game, which means 2 things in PvE:

• Dungeons are chaotic and the mobs/bosses are uncontrollable.
• Open world PvE such as boss events only require a ton of players spamming 1

Too much nostalgia blinds your vision my friend. See above, you don’t need a healer. Blasting in water fields is more efficient anyway, without any healing power investment. Bosses can be controlled, defiant can be stripped, they can be slowed by either cripple or chill.
The later one is true sadly most of the time, BUT the most recent event with the knights showed that that is not enough everytime.

The rest of your posts shows that you didn’t pay attention in this thread, so sorry that i won’t react to it.

Honestly often casuals came up with the excuse that they want to play the game, want to have fun whatever and have limited time. You know what? If you (casuals) actually care about yourself, since you don’t give a skritt about others it seems, think about that if, i mean IF you force yourself to actually learn the content and not afk auto attacking in WvW carebear PVT gear without any dodge, you may finish the instance in less than 2 hour. Maybe. I’m speaking in general, not against you Lilith or Warkupo.
The pug perception is bad. Really really bad. And 1 year behind the meta, but thats another story.

I never really understood this attitude. I consider myself casual, but I also like to learn and I like to improve at whatever game I’m playing. It’s absolutely no fun to stay at beginner level for months and months, and it’s certainly no fun in group content to feel I am not contributing at all. I strongly suspect that several other gamers who consider themselves casual also hold this viewpoint.

I also think it’s wrong to lay the whole “only thinking about yourselves” accusation solely at the casuals player’s door. There are just as many posts from non-casuals telling casuals to play their way or get out. So I would disagree with you on this point.

But yes, I agree that it’s a mystery why constantly wiping in a dungeon is fun for anyone.

Casuals are the players who has less time or plays less in general, aren’t they? Sadly, mostly in the forums it turned out to be a negative word to players who just don’t care.
Even if someone plays in a so called “suboptimal gear and setup”, overcoming a challange is still can be fun and enjoyable, however as you said, wiping numerous times isn’t fun. Moving slowly, don’t care about the group or even yourself and using excuses such as you don’t have time, because you are casual i just … i can’t understand. Or when you point it out that actually playing in a group content, it would be nice to be beneficial to the group you know. At least put down a reflect wall or anything, not just equip all the signets and range pew pew.

I admit, my personal experience started the same way. Hell, i even mained a necro for more than a year and started as a condimancer too, but the odd feeling start to grow on me as i get more experienced how things works, that i literally hold back my group when i playing in a “non-optimal” way. I’m an altoholic anyway, so it wasn’t a problem to change characters.

edit: As pointed out above, rangers are fine, just majority of them don’t know how to be the most efficient. Same with engi, but their repertoir is questionable anyway. So yes, necro is the only S tier class currently in pve.

edit2: Oh and warriors can bring firefields, a lot of blast finishers via banners, LB and warhorn, good vulnerabiltiy stacking, Empower allies to further increase group dps. And they are tanky as hell, even in zerker.

I think the problem with GW2 is that PVE content is simply too easy. When every dungeon is being run as a “zerk or bust” mentality there is naturally something wrong with the difficulty settings.

If actually people using zerker gear in pve everytime, that would be great.

Great in what way? Because the dungeon would not be challenging at any given point or time? Why not just slap a big “I win button” on a golden chest in the first room and be done with it. It’s kind of like grinding up to the highest level in an RPG before fighting the boss; yeah you beat him, but did you really accomplish anything worth talking about?

I play games to play games.

Slapping on berserker gear does not automatically make a dungeon (or open world pve for that matter) a face roll.

It isn’t the gear. It’s the player.

The vast majority of the gw2 player base are not able to succeed dungeons in any gear, let alone berserker. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, anet will not create content that only caters to the skilled pve players (or skilled players in general). I’ll say it again, they won’t even introduce a combo field priority system, and their stated reason is because 90% of the playerbase wouldn’t even know what it was for.

I honestly give zero cats what people wear in or out of dungeons. I do however care that people keep saying things like “nerf zerk OP win button”.

, a decent group does not use its utility to survive but as a mean to increase the overall group dps.

That is precisely what you do in a trinity game.

Why does the tank hold aggro? To allow the DPS’ers to do their rotations. Why does the healer heal? To keep players up so they can keep up DPS and the tank can keep holding aggro.

It’s all to make DPS easier.

My mind is literally blown at seeing basically every single person below my post (I even provided two links of control being relevant) completely ignoring it by saying damage is the only thing that matters when I have demonstrated that is completely incorrect.

It’s completely mind blowing.

Even in WoW, as you write above, everything is about how to increase overall dps and survival to keep up dps. To make thing worse, they implemented enrage timers.
Good that this game don’t have this thing. -wink wink-

I believe the outright removal of “on fire” effects which cover the body is the only solution. As I said before, the condition icon on the health bar is enough to let us know the boss is taking burn damage.

However i have an idea why guardian virtue is different. To give visual feedback which enemy suffers from it, thus you know who will trigger Renewed Justice. Same with the normal Burning, it’s alone can deal a significant amount of damage.
I don’t know how positive effect it would have if “on fire” visuals are gone. :/

I don’t get it… most damaging AOE’s are either completely invisible or just simple red circles with no identifying marks on what they are at all… How can someone possibly complain that giant glowing marks with specific symbols telling you what they are is somehow OPed?

If anything they should be changed to match other classes AOE’s and traps. Just a simple red/white circle with no glow and no identification.

Most people complain about them, because if you drop a mark on someone it’s effect will trigger on the enemy, dealing their stuff 100%, meanwhile a let’s say meteor shower hits you with 1-2 projectile before you dodge out from it, thus wasting it’s damage potential.
Ad in the “poor tell” of the skills and here you go, complains everywhere.

If the mark is already on the ground, there isn’t any problem. Going around, dodge trough it, pop a immunity, whatever, it can be countered.
But honestly, if a necro holds a staff against you, wouldn’t you expect that he throws a mark under your feet?

I just read the first few post, sorry if i misunderstood something.

@OP
Look up videos how stuff can work without tanks. Using chill / cripple to slow down the enemy and hit it from max melee range or simply rotate reflects / blocks to avoid damage. Of course, maximising the damage output of your group is needed to (if we talk about zerkers) both as an individual and as a group. I mean you should trait and gear for the most optimal dps, while bringing the required utility skills, such as Smoke screen, Shadow refuge as a thief, meanwhile help out your teammates in might and vulnerability stacking.
If you don’t run a full zerker “optimal” build, get full PTV and facetank the whole game without a dodge.
Also, Signet of Malice has such a great synergy with SW/P, that heal is stupidly op if you can cleave 3 mob.
Blinding powder is op too. While it lasts you regenerate 4-5 ini back and your whole ini pool is at least 12 ini anyway and steal can give you back 2 if needed. If you can’t burst the mobs down in that time, something is wrong with group composition and / or with the dps.

There ARE roles in this game, just not as distinct as games with a holy trinity. Like it? Play it. Don’t like it? Leave or give constructive feedback.

Particle effects do need to be toned down. Its a huge pain in the kitten on mossman when the guardian uses f1. Same goes for other small/human sized bosses. But also guardian f1 is over the top on any boss, its probably the worst culprit for over cluttering the screen with particle effects. Plenty of other abilities need toning down aswell though.

Yeah, Mossman and Archdivinier is my worst enemy in the game for the same reason.

Grawl shaman (the endboss) is hard to watch too due to how the camera can’t be zoomed out more so you need to watch it from a lower angle.

I share your feelings OP. As i often play on my guardian nowadays i must wait for the bosses “rest phase” (eg. when Archdiviner puts down the wells) to trigger Virtue of Justice (F1) so it will wear off when im need to watch for animations, beacuse of those blue flame particles i can’t see anything, tough i play on minimum graphics with effect LOD turned on.
Oh and those sweet Sigil of Flame effects on the holo fight. Thanks gods i don’t have epilepsy.

I would also ad in the problem with the camera. The whole camera thing is just weird as hell and moves in a really annoying way.

I would say that it’s just the perception of the pugs. Personally i find thieves way more useful, if they know what to do. Also check out obal’s full warrior runs on lvl49. They still breeze trough content with ease. =]

AC p1:
On the spider stack as the spider hatchlings get just before the corner I have hit for 4-5k on a Soldiers/Clerics support heal build. I dont even hit with autos at 80 for that much. The best part is that I had no stacks of might or anyother dps boosts. I have only had this happen to me in the spider corner in p1. It also has happened with different weapons, for example in these screenshots of the combat log I used the hammer and the mace.

GS is pretty bad since it deals less damage than the sword, has less evades and is in general just worse.

Is this a joke? I guess AOE doesn’t exist anymore.

Sword deals more damage AND still cleaves. The 3rd part of the chain deals damage behind you too and has higher aoe cap, but correct me if i’m remember wrong.
Also … aoe =/= cleave

I followed the advice by Bunmaster and write a looooong advertise in lfg with meta build and zerker requirements. Fail, fail, fail.
Ofc rangers, staff guardians, rifle warriors as usual in full clerics / PVT / celestial, but even if a zerker joined it still used some sub optimal build, like AH anchor one.
Once a ranger stated that he / she hates the 30/25/0/15/0 meta build, cuz he dies too often with it so he used 30/30/10/0/0. I don’t know why. But it turned out he was a bearbow. At least the gear was zerker.
Or usually ping fire field in party chat and type “stack might pls” aaaand nothing happens not even with more eles. :C
Much frustration. So nab. Very playhowiwant.

One other thing that would make fractals more interesting (or less boring) is variety within the instance. Good examples are dredge and swamp currently.
Dredge has either the cannon or bomb room, which ofc can be abused with stealth skipping, but you get it and both of endbosses are really similar, but still have some unique flavor.
Swamp is the same with both the wisp part and the endbosses. However these need to be balanced out later on, because while Bloomy is so faceroll it hurts meanwhile Mossman is one of the most dangerous boss in the game.

Obal’s actual full dps build is 20/25/0/0/25, where you can get traited Absolute resolution and if you need, you can throw in Purging flames, but there are not that many conditions in the game. And you know actually you have 4 party members that can help you out too.
Also, the supportive hammer build by him, which mostly used in fractals also has this support and perma protection for a little less damage.
So while you provide support with negative dps and meaningless healing along with swiftness symbol and a CC wall which does nothing ’cuz of Defiant well yeah, we need to learn to play.

edit: Also, stability, reflects, aegis are on the right side of the skillbar, so “zerker noobs” can use it too not only the almighty support ones.

Story idea.

How about remaking the fight against Kralki as Destiny’s Edge, BUT with a twist in the end, since fractals not neccessary the exact same as past events.
5 player transforms as DE, Snaff will be the event triggering npc.
The instance would follow the story as in the books, like finding Glints hideout, fighting against Glint, preparations, defend Snaff and here actually DE manages to kill Kralkatorrik and it turns out that killing a ED is not a good idea since it disturbs the flow of magic or whatever and they can’t be killed in a permanent way as any other being, thus hinting towards that Zhaitan not 100% dead dead.

Mechanic wise it sounds that it’s an easy, slow, timegated fractal, which i wouldn’t prefer but with some brainstorming maybe it would have nice mechanics.
Any comment on this?

There could be an underground fractal (don’t scare, read further) with a dwarfen story, how they fight against the destroyers, maybe revealing something important about either side.

Exotics. Too much account bound stuff. Too much. Remove them pretty pls, it’s such a tease that you basicly just loose income with them. :C

What do you mean with “loose income?” They are a good part of my income of dark matter and usually worth around 3 gold or so for selling the insignia in addition to that (which you don’t always get—but the chance to get it appears rather high to me).

I mean that your only option is to salvage them. So you get dark matter from them. Or not. Or you get ecto from it. Or not. Or you get an insignia from it. Or not. Get it?
Meanwhile if it becomes non-accountbound it can be sold on TP for much more, if you are lucky and get something useful. Two days ago i sold a random exotic for 7g on the TP for example that dropped in fractals.

I know I’m a little late to the party, but has anyone compiled a list of PvE encounters where pets are not just useless, but a liability? I’m thinking Jade Maw, Subject Alpha, that kind of thing.

I don’t mind having a pet, but they really need some improvement, and the fact that some fights are legitimately more difficult with our un-stowable pets is a real bummer for rangers who already get kicked from dungeon groups simply for having that paw icon. It really discourages new rangers from trying any high-end content.

The actual problem isn’t being a ranger. The problem is that most of the rangers play the class in a bad way or with other words they don’t play it in the most efficient way, just pew pew from a mile a way and let the bear tank stuff. I talk about pve ofc.
Their unique buffs are nice, despite their lower base damage compared to others (including pet), but with Spotter and Frost spirit the overall party dps is increased.
However the most efficient way currently is to play with sword/x, but that weapon just kills the fluid nature of ranger. The root and the nearly unbreakable attack chain that makes you unable to dodge and the slow #2 skill which has an unnecessary precast, which is painful to use with the auto attack.
And ofc the pet can die from everything, thus you lost a big part of your damage if you can’t swap out before it dies and even if you do you lost your best dps option (jaguar) for 20 seconds and go with a worse pet. Imagine it, you miss a dodge and a message pops up, “now you cant use 100blades/backstab/whirling wrath/etc for 20s”.

By the way, there are two places where the AoE rings can turn invisible:

  • In Uncategorized Fractal, the Harpies’ knockback attacks. If they target the center of a small platform, the whole rim of the AoE circle is in the air, thus nothing is drawn.
  • In Swampland Fractal, against Bloomhunger. Whenever an AoE circle is underwater, it’s invisible, and there’s a lot of water.
  • (Tequatl has similar issues with his poison fields in the water, but that’s not a fractal)

Is it possible to replace those with the new full-orange AoE circles that were used in the marionette, wurm and hologram fights?

Turning on reflections to “Terrain and sky” makes it better, however it still can be improved.

As the rewards goes, most of them are gated by tier on a daily basis since the last patch. So if we make any improvement how to use relics (both pristine and regular) it’s actually a good thing and you can calculate with it.
Fractals is the only content in game where you really need ascended gear, thus it would be great that you can get almost everything out from it.

How about to buy earings from Pristine relics? Currently it can be bought with 12 guild commendation (takes 8 days at least to get all if your guild can do everything in a week and do it again on reset day) or with 50 ecto + 40 laurel (it’s horribly overpriced compared to the amuletts). So for a reasonable amount of relics it could be obtained (30-40?).

Weapons. Currently the droprate is well … pathetic. Sorry, it’s really really bad. It could be a more frequent in higher levels, probably after lvl40. Same with fractal skins. These could be bought with relics. Lets say, 1000 normal relics and ~100 pristine.
Another thing, that now if we get a weapon chest, only the weapon type can be choosen, the stats are fixed. How about changing these? You get a weapon, eg. an axe and you choose the stats for it. With the current meta outside of berserker weapons, there is literally no point to get anything else from them.

Armor. As a direct drop, it never should be in fractals, since ascended crafting is a huge gold sink (and you need that), so if we could get some extra material drop in the form of dragonite ore, empyrial fragments and maybe refined materials (Lump of Mithrillium, Glob of Elder Spirit Residue, Spool of Thick Elonian Cord, Spool of Silk Weaving Thread).

Gold. This shouldn’t be the main reasons to run fractals, however currently compared to other dungeons, the gold reward is too low. As others pointed out, 1g*tier would be a reasonable amount, so 5g after lvl40. Maybe throw in some extra to lvl50 (or the current max level if it will be increased).

Ring drops. Make them salvagable or tradable to relics.
