Getting old titles and achievement points

In one of the CDI threads on the main GW2 forum, the game director asked what players liked most about their favorite TV shows, and many who participated in that thread responded with variations of “being able to rewatch them at our leisure” and the studio director also seemed to like the idea of players being able to experience old LS content.

They have mentioned they are already exploring ways for new players or players who missed out on LS chapters to be able to at least review what’s happened in-game for said chapters. Maybe once implemented, they will expand on it in such a way that players will be able to replay them in some instanced form.

There are a lot of cool titles and nifty skins rewarded from them, so I sympathize with you OP and am hoping they will implement a system where players can enjoy LS chapters of the past.

N.B. Thank goodness ArenaNet actually embraces the exact opposite of this benighted philosophy [see “iteration”] and are already working on ways to improve the Living World experience, despite what some self-styled “defenders” of the GW2 status quo would have you believe.

Change is coming. Patience is counseled.

I’m hoping they will eventually roll out some legit ways to replay past LS chapters. I didn’t really like how the Molten Weapons Facility and Aetherblade Retreat dungeons turned out in Fractals… splitting them apart just so they meet the stage/boss stage type that Fractals uses. I’d have much rather fought all the trash mobs they gutted out, as I didn’t think both dungeons were long to begin with.

I’m kind of hoping it’s temporary, like they want to just get the low selling items off the list so people can navigate to the best sellers easier while they work on getting the gem shop more organzied, then bring them back that is done with.

I noticed that some of the glasses, the bunny ears, boxing gloves and all of the fancy shirts have “Available for 7 days only!” message on them. I really wish this limited time nonsense would stop in the gem store. I know they use it as some sort of marketing scheme to drive sales but it’s really short-sighted.

Ugh, I feel for you all. I actually gave up trying last night, but today when I was doing the daily fractal achievement, one of the last 2 I needed (Dredge fractal lol) actually popped up and we cleared it. I was so relieved but man no one should have to go through any of this.

Got the Underground fractal tonight to my surprise. I was in a solid group so they carried me and were able to clear it, while showing me the ropes. After the Jade Maw fractal I jumped back into Fractals solo until I got Swampland and started another group and BAM last 2 I needed done with! Sooo glad I lucked out with RNG for a change.

I finished the meta, but I’ve been trying to get Swamp and Underground fractals for days now. They are the only 2 in Fractured that are not filled in.

Yeah, after 10 keys used on chests last year, I only got 1 pet, and then realized it wasn’t worth chasing the others because I just knew I wouldn’t get lucky. I don’t think I’ve bought a Black Lion Key since.

They’re account bound too, aren’t they? That’s a real blow to a lot of people. I don’t mind having to buy seasonal minis twice (second ones for using in the MF) since I’m still directly buying what I want.

I hope Anet will re-release those minipets for those who did not get the chance (no pun intended) to get these minipets. And not the RNG way. Pricy is ok, RNG is not.

It’s always great to buy something directly even if it’s a little on the expensive side; I agree.

My friend who actually recommended this game to me a few months before head-start already quit a long time ago after how badly The Lost Shores weekend turned out, the game not really striving to make improvements and prioritizing the gem store above putting out some amazing, fleshed out content and the game’s current state of not letting new players play past living story chapters and thus missing out on some cool items and skins isn’t very appealing for new comers IMO.

-What do you like about the current Living Story content?

My achievement score getting a boost with each installment is nice, but that’s about it.

-What do you dislike?

It’s temporary, rushed and thus very buggy, and at times grindy when it comes to some of the achievements for each chapter. It leaves players who took a break as well as new players missing out on a ton of stuff.

-In your opinion, do you like the direction of this game?

No.

What would you like to see?

Permanent new content that adds new zones, professions, NPCS, playable races, dungeons, weapons, and more skills going forward, with an option for past Living Story chapters to be replayable in some type of instanced state, with achievements and items tied to their respective LS chapters to be obtainable as a fairness to new players.

For some reason they seem hellbent on keeping the 2 week release schedule. The bugs keep piling up as each release happens, too. At the current rate, I think it won’t be too long until the game starts to crash and burn from so many bugs that they can’t seem to fix, or won’t fix. I mean, you can’t even talk to scout NPCs right now without them bugging out and getting cut off before finishing their explanations, and some people are even saying the voice overs are completely gone (I haven’t checked the latter yet).

The achievement grinding they have addressed and have “plans” to make them less grindy and more favorable to both hardcore players and players who don’t have much free time so they both can the meta completed while being satisfied, but who knows what that will be and when it will be implemented.

The current “Fractured” meta isn’t that bad IMO. Basically just completing 11 (or more) different Fractals, and the Nightmare Tower looks to be around for another 2 weeks.

I’m really hoping they can turn things around and squash these bugs and ease up on the achievement grinds some more.

I haven’t tested this yet after today’s patch, but when this bug first appeared a few weeks ago, I found a little work around for it (it might have been posted already in another thread but I didn’t check).

Basically, as soon as you get the Scout talking and the map screen opens up, press ‘M’ to close the map and cut them off, and then immediately talk to them again to restart it, and this should have them finish their entire dialogue with no interruptions or cut-offs.

I’d definitely love to actually earn account bound versions of those skins.

If people don’t want to be challenged at getting them then they can always resort to farming or buying gold (whatever fits their fancy) and buy the tradable versions (make them a rare drop from the fractals like how it was before the dungeons became fractals).

Its not really new info, since Colin said something months ago about the rewards not coming back due to them wanting to keep the itemsm [i]prestige[/]. Which is ludicrous, IMO. Who cares if something is rare or prestige. The only prestige you had with those items was being extremely lucky. There are many of us who constantly ran the dungeon(s) trying to get the item (which was locked behind rng in temporary content) but were not lucky in the rng drops. And many of us do not have the gold needed (both now or at the time of the temp content) to buy the thing off the TP (which is only controlled by the top 1-5%, or market extortionists). They should be brought back as rewards for either the corresponding dungeon fractal (might not be possible due to all fractal chests using same list, which may or may not be the case) or with the end boss (maw event fractal thing, which would/should have its own list of possible item drops, thus the better option).

It makes me wonder what will happen to other temporary recipes; like the one for dragon’s revelry starcake when dragon bash will return next year. Will they shoot this down for people who could not obtain it last year?

That seems like they way they are heading. Not bringing back dungeon rewards, increasing the cost of recipes drastically (ie Halloween item recipes), 1 use only LS reward skins, etc, etc. They have the tools already to enable any of the stuff to be brought back (champ bag for end of fractal, leave recipe cost alone, put LS achievement rewards in the AP panel thing), they just choose not to do it, all in the name of making stuff prestige and making it alt unfriendly.

Yeah, I was shaking my head when Colin said it “wouldn’t be fair to those who earned” those items when they were actively dropping from the dungeons, as if jumping into that dungeon a couple of times and getting lucky enough to get the jetpack only never to bother with the dungeon again is some type of achievement to be proud of. All the while others did the same dungeon multiple times a day, every day it was active, and still getting next to nothing to show for it.

His reasoning for prestige would actually hold some merit if players actually had to do challenging stuff to obtain them from some permanent content, rather than getting lucky with RNG in a 2 week span. It’s just ridiculousness through and through.

My ticket number is #71884, I was asked by support to delete the mining tools which I wanted credit for, I immediately deleted them and replied to support, now I got a message back telling me that they could not confirm my deletion, could it be because I deleted the tools after they were converted to account bound and the ID number changed? I replied back with the date and approximate time, as well as the time zone that I am in, so I hope that they find them okay.

Don’t worry, this same thing happened to me but they got around to refunding my gems earlier today.

Even if its account bound now, I’d be too lazy to just move them around. I’m still hoping for a unlimited axe for my main. I’ll have to eventually afford a second set for my guardian and a third set for my Engineer, then i can move them to my other 3 lesser used alts if need be. Six characters, 3 sets? That works well!

Haha, I know what you mean about the convenience of having multiple characters outfitted with these bad boys even if they are account bound now. I bought 20 over the year for my various alts, most recent being the Bone Pick and Jack-in-the-Box Scythe for my Necromancer. I’m quite happy that ArenaNet decided to make the tools truly account bound. It wasn’t a big deal for me but I can totally understand it being a blow to some one’s piggy bank. Is this potential refund for a limited time?

Hello,

I was doing the event “M.E.T.A. golem to the rescue! Help him defeat the WST-8100 golem” in Metrica Province (The Hinterlands area in front of Rata Sum entrance) and once the WST-8100 was destroyed, the achievement for getting the first guard kill in WvW Season 1 popped up. I have not ventured anywhere near any killable targets in Eternal Battleground this week, I just browsed one of the vendors there and left so actual players wanting to play could get out of the horrid queue and into the map.

Also, a quick question: As someone who wants nothing to do with WvW or its achievements, will this progress actually get stuck with me when it eventually goes into the “Historical” section once the season ends?

Late to this thread, unfortunately, but I respect that you all are actually taking the time trying to get some real feedback from us. I was getting close to calling it quits on this game after the Halloween update feeling very stripped down compared to last year, and the fact that you all actually excluded new players or players who missed out on last year’s achievements and scavenger hunt from participating/achieving them in a recurring holiday event.

If I recall correctly, this used to be a small seaside town or village that nearly always had an event where Krait would attack and take villagers as prisoners. Did they finally wipe them out once and for all?

You’re thinking of the town Triskell Quay that’s near Viathan’s Arm. The ruins in your picture used to be slightly less ruined building where some bandits would hang out, but now the Krait stripped them down for resources.

According to their lore logic, this redone scarlet path will ALSO be removed at some point when we move past her story, lmao.

I’m not gonna pretend I enjoyed F/U but I lol’d pretty hard at the comment from the first page “even the permanent content in this game is temporary”. Sad, but true.

Maybe this has to do with lack of dungeon designers, since they fired Robert for wanting his dungeons to be permanent content.

No one likes temporary content ANet, please, get this through your thick ignorant skulls. No one liked when Cataclysm ruined the entire world, either. Sure the questing was better but it left a bad taste in our mouths after being a part of that world for so long.

I can’t stand how willing devs are to throw things away like that.

Yeah, as I said in my previous post earlier in this merged thread, myself and a lot of others didn’t stick around long after Cataclysm released. WoW literally never recovered from that crappy expansion and are still losing more and more subscriptions to this day.

If I had know ArenaNet was planning on designing their game in the way that made me lose interest in WoW, I never would have pre-ordered this game last year. I’m going to stick around for a little while longer to see if AN finally gets the hint about their ridiculousness with temporary content, but if they want to continue to go this route then I’ll probably just find something else to play.

From a design standpoint, we want the Living World updates to change and have an impact on the world. Earlier in the year, Colin gave the example of blowing up a dungeon and replacing it. This is very much that example in action. Because the explorable paths of Twilight Arbor were very similar from a content perspective, we made the decision to create a new path to revitalize one of the existing ones. Forward Up was one of the least played dungeon paths in the game, and was the best candidate for doing something like this.

Ugh. This kind of design is why I quit playing WoW.

Funny, I only remember Cataclysm being the only content changer in WoW. Everything else was content added to content added to content, added to content. It was so much saturation that no matter how many people you had on your server, getting a group for something specific that was ‘old’ was nearly impossible. And even then with Cataclysm, it was 6 or 7 years AFTER the game’s initial launch; so there was a very long time of staleness to the older content that got changed.

Yeah, and a month after Cataclysm’s launch was when I quit (started playing a few months after the Burning Crusade expansion’s release). I don’t know what they have been doing since then other than that panda expansion and the continual hemorrhaging of active subscriptions, which coincidentally started not long after Cata’s release, but in Cata’s expansion they made a lot of changes to some dungeons and zones that didn’t really need it, while others that were actually due for an overhaul were still left ignored for the most part. That was inexcusable considering they had a fully functional phasing system that had been in place over a year prior to Cataclysm’s launch that would have at least benefited the players a lot more. Knowing I couldn’t go on an alt and start back from the beginning and enjoy some of the original content outside of private servers crushed any interest I had in playing it ever again.

Anyway, back on topic, I’m hoping AN sees the folly in this and doesn’t remove/replace other dungeons that aren’t popular, because there’s always someone out there who DOES enjoy it and it’s short-sighted to do them a disservice such as this in the long run.

Do you really think that making a completely new path requires less work than fixing a boss?

It’s less work than creating the new path + correcting a boss in an existing path, yes. Though I wouldn’t call it lazy, just another casualty of their time restraints it seems.

Because that would make sense, and until today I think that’s what most people expected would happen. TA would go from 3 level 55 paths to 3 level 55 paths and one level 80.

I have 580 of them. I farm them regularly so I can do tribulation mode.

They’re fine the way they are.

That’s nice and all, but this thread is about people who purchased the infinite continue coin (or people who have no desire to play SAB in the first place) yet are still getting normal continue coins when they no longer need or what them. It becomes a hassle to have to delete one each time we receive one from whatever chest a player opens, or leaving them in the bank that does nothing but take up space. So no, it’s not fine the way it is.

I like your suggestion OP. I think I read in another thread like this where someone suggested they simply be a tradable item to sell on the TP, though I don’t think Anet would want that as it kind of undervalues the ICC.

Making them able to be sold to merchant NPCs like the voting ballots once Cutthroat Politics ended would be good too, IMO.

2. Player Interaction

When players are frustrated, they start taking it out on others. The Teq 2.0 fight is bringing out the worst in players. People are shouting, insulting, abusing others, and even going so far as to avoid reviving people.

When a game is designed in a way that causes so much frustration, something needs to be looked at. This is a video game, we’re all here to have fun. If the task at hand is frustrating to the point where players are lashing out, then something is wrong.

I was in an overflow earlier, just waiting for Teq to spawn so I get the credit for the daily when he spawned, and positioned myself near the turrets to help DPS down the adds like I always do (I’m in berserker gear) and these guys started spamming map chat with their teamspeak server info and telling everyone to download and join their channel to win.

I don’t see anything wrong with that, as I’m never against people wanting to effectively communicate with one another during some hectic content such as this, except that one of them actually whispered me asking if I was in their TS. I said no, as I currently have no audio as my old speakers stopped working and am waiting for the new ones I ordered in the mean time while I continue to play, and he flat out told me to “get away from him”.

That kind of silly attitude toward people just wanting to participate is what I dislike about this event, as the OP mentioned; it’s bringing the worst out of player’s attitudes. That overflow I was in eventually failed due to AFKers on turrets, and that TS gang didn’t stick around long after it was apparent we were going to lose.

Yeah, I’ve been at the mercy of disconnects for a few days now, but it’s been on my end (ISP fixed it today finally) rather than from the servers.

I finally completed World 2 Zone 3 in tribulation mode a little while ago. Yesterday I D/C’d near the end of the zone and I about cried lol. When I killed the Storm Wizard and looted the chest earlier, you can imagine my anxiety as I was waiting and hoping there wouldn’t be another D/C as the timer counted down to my achievement.

Does anyone know if once you pick up a bauble, and get disconnected, do you have to go back and retrieve that bauble to get the achievement? Basically do you have to grab all the baubles in a zone in one session, or does the game count the ones you already picked up in earlier sessions?

If you start the zone all over, you have to pick them all up again.
In case you were in there with a friend, and after reconnecting into the same instance, it may be possible that it’s different, but I don’t think so.

Does anyone know if once you pick up a bauble, and get disconnected, do you have to go back and retrieve that bauble to get the achievement? Basically do you have to grab all the baubles in a zone in one session, or does the game count the ones you already picked up in earlier sessions?

According to Josh Foreman, the inability to resume at checkpoints is technical problem, not a design decision:

I can’t always dedicate hours at a time to GW2, and it would really, really, really help if we could start playing at unlocked checkpoints rather than the start of each zone, in all modes. That way I could focus on a smaller chunk at a time and progress in the SAB even when I “only” have an hour to play in the evening.

I would like this too. I think we don’t have a way to store that information on your character though.

The way things work in SAB is, like the engine compromises, are not the way I would design this thing if it wasn’t part of GW2. There are so many issues that come with building this in an MMO, the amount of logistics we have to deal with is a nightmare. I would love nothing more than to let you go back to your last check point.

Hopefully they will find a way around it in the future, but at least we know it wasn’t intended

there is a suggestion we can make in the meantime: party up. You don’t need a full party of 5, but if at least one other player is in there with you (and doesn’t get kicked at the same time), then you can rejoin the instance pretty painlessly, straight back at the last checkpoint unlocked.

This unfortunately doesn’t work for trib mode, that was implemented on purpose to prevent piggy-backing (since a unique skin is tied to the completion of trib mode.) But for normal mode that is a solid suggestion.

Yikes. I may not even bother finishing world 2 tribulation mode if it’s potentially going to result in another 2 hours wasted for me, because of a disconnect. I just got my first disconnect ever during a session of SAB, and it had to be while I was in 2-2 tribulation mode no less. It’s REALLY a mood killer when it happens.

Yeah, I just got screwed over by a disconnect during 2-2 tribulation mode. I normally don’t get disconnects but of course I get one during tribulation.

A save system would definitely be nice.
