I don’t agree that Thief needs nerf. It’s not like it’s done easy and fast. It requires constant scanning of the environment, killing “adds”, and timing utility skills.
Like I said, just sharing my experience with Orr. If someone got a good laugh and find it a joke, not my intention, but I guess it’s all good if anyone feels happy.
Heya guys, sharing my solo runs in Orr. I usually read how annoying/hard (depending on who is posting) Orr is but I find it really fun pre Lost Shore patch. ANet now added Lost Shore, and that not only address complaints about Lv80 areas being mostly Orr/Risen, but it also allowed me to solo again some of the events for video-recording . YouTube linky below….

Secret to money making is gambling (or risk taking), whether in Mystic Forge or TP. Of course, TP gambling is more of a “calculated risk” rather than RNG (i.e. analyzing what sells, what don’t, what’s coming new, what new patches are going to bring/remove, etc).
Same works for stocks in real life, it’s gambling, but a risk. You can put all your money in a stock, or put some, up to the discretion of the person.
Then there’s the “most common way”, farming. Typical to your common place worker. It pays, but not as big, but not too high risk….but that’s the trade off: high risk, high rewards.
Or you can become an outlaw and do nasty stuff, and in the game, that means you can hack. But same principle: high risk = high rewards. Some risks are legal, some are not. If you want the safe way, do normal farming. If you want fast track and have patience, you can spend a good deal of time learning TP, and then you can also gamble in Forge…
Just to share, I am an adult with two friends. I am a Thief with Lv78 Armor/Lv80 Weapon (exotic), +green Trinkets/Accessories + Halloween Backpack full MF with a measly 15k HP. My friends uses a Necro same gear as me (Lv78 Armor, green, backpack etc) around 20k HP and my other friend uses a Mesmer with the same gear stat and about 20k HP.
We ALL don’t find Orr annoying. These are three classes, with non-OP armor/weapon/trinket focused on MF. My friends manage to save up to 30gold till this time (they play less than me) and while I save about 200g. We all get those money farming Orr!
Sure, my friends knows Jormag but find it less appealing to wait 2.5hrs to 3hrs since they have limited play time. So they stuck with Orr, and just run around killing stuff, gathering, and joining events when they can. And we all don’t play at same time except on weekends so they play solo, join with others when we can, and just enjoy fighting these mobs.
So my point is, it’s not about age or skills (my friends have less skills than me). It all boils down to preference. Some likes it, some don’t. What others find annoying, others find the same, some find it easy, some find it challenging, some find it stupid, some find it rewarding, and sometimes, others find it FUN (like me). So if it’s changed to someone else’s preference (let’s say ANet agreed to implement the OP’s definition of what is not annoying), I’m pretty sure there will be others will find that mechanic annoying, and the cycle continues.
I hope Anet doesn’t change it for the “worst”, if they need to, make it harder and more challenging. As it is right now, we seldom die. I say make these mobs up to Lv90 where some “normal mobs” require at least two people but at the same time, give better loot. Difficulty = better rewards, at least, a part of Cursed Shore should be like that if not all part of it. That may also persuade us to get power gear and full Lv80 exotic armor rather than MF Lv78 gear!
But then again, others might complain that the zone is too annoying…..but that’s my point (preference, tolerance level, acceptance level, etc). I always think that if something is too hard (or annoying), then go somewhere else. Like the saying goes, if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen…whether that “heat” stands for “annoying” or “hard” is up to someone else’s definition or tolerance or acceptance…

Orr is the map where I get the most fun after Sparkfly Fen. The event chains are so fast, it rarely gets you idle. The mobs becomes something you have to fight seriously and not just faceroll, it truly is a place where you need concentration and a lot of (initial) effort to be successful.
And of course, if you do Orr a lot, you can actually run from point A to point B without getting stunned/pulled back/etc (proper timing of evade, or using stability skills or stealth or whatever). It’s about getting familiar with the place (terrain and mobs), if you are familiar enough, it’s a fun map.
I mean, if you don’t like the mobs in Orr, go Frostgorge Sound. The map is huge, offers enough scale of difficulty, and there’s Elder Dragon to boot to. Pretty good loot for chest!
But I love Orr, great events, great Karma vendors, nice lore, awesome landscape (just see all the devastation), fast and mass respawn = fast loot!
And ohh, I am not OP, I use a thief with Lv78 Exotics Armor in full MF. My trinkets are all Greens with MF runes. My dagger/dagger and Shortbow are also with Sigil of Luck/Traveller Rune. With 15k HP, am nowhere OP and yet I survived this map and not find them annoying….
It’s fun, challenging, and provides great rewards for those who work hard (farm) in this zone!
Thing I learned in this game, if you can’t beat it now, try later. I had a hard time in Lv40s so I skipped them. But when I reached Orr, boy, it made those areas I skipped like cakewalk. I beat all Orr Vistas/PoI and get accustomed to it and actually having fun.
Now, after doing my dailies, monthlies, and farming some Plinx runs, I go back to those other areas I skipped and found them very easy (even the Hearts).
I find Orr (Cursed Shore specifically) fine. I am a newcomer to GW2, never played GW1, and not a pro. I use a Thief with a measly 15k HP with Lv78 Exotic Armor/Lv80 Exotic Dual Dagger on full Traveller Rune for MF.
My first time at Orr is actually interesting, a little tough but that goes the same way for every map I am new at: mainly because I am not familiar with the place.
So my point is, it’s not just Orr, it’s all “new” maps.
I understand that there’s a mention of players “ignoring” other players, but I don’t really ignore people. Often times, I asked players if they are “on” before reviving, specially in Orr, because if they are AFK, “my help” only made the situation worst because the character might die again and have to pay more for repairs. Other people thinks this way too…
Also, in the heat of farming, if someone is down, oftentimes I don’t notice them (and most probably, other players are very busy to notice as well). And when I do, I try (and I see others too) to help. Say for example, Champ Abomination at Caer WP after Plinx has successfully reached the fort. If you don’t watch your HP or the action, you’ll end up down more than usual.
And this is Orr, players are expected to have l2p. Sure, there are always newbie, but players should act like their level, i.e. if they don’t know the place, learn the place; if they don’t know the enemy, learn the enemy; if they can’t beat something (event/mob/etc), call for help; if no help comes, do something else; if you die/down and nobody helps, shrug it off and remind yourself not to get in that trouble again. In the end, you are making yourself improve for the better…
I know dungeons are fun to many, or probably, to some. For me, they are “ok” but I can’t devote the time to do complete dungeons. Unlike PvP, PvE, WvW where you can easily get in/out and resume, it’s not with dungeon where you have to get stuck to complete it.
Anyway, I guess I’ll be trying to complete it, not because it’s fun but to have some sort of challenge (not in terms of difficulty) in giving dungeon “time”…
I usually get some PMs around Lions Arch with my gear. Dunno, this is the first exotic I ever get that is affordable (each gear costs less than a G). I was tired of my Rare Lv75+ gear ever since I hit Lv80 and the sets from Karma vendor are a whooping 42k each.
I am pleased at all the pieces except for the mask. I always wanted a hood, but don’t like a mask. I am shooting for a Demon Hunter (from D3: http://us.media2.battle.net/cms/gallery/9C5SOH9J525Y1336590101266.JPG) look actually but I may not get that here.
Heya Psionic, I am new to the GW world so I can’t make an “informed opinion” i.e. can not compare it to previous GW or whether in Beta, players clamored for it. Thanks for info mate, it always helps to get the reasoning behind certain design aspects of the game.
Thanks man. Never knew/noticed that Exotics have the same stats O.o….dunno if that’s smart or lazy on the part of Anet.
Seems like all options are indeed costly, one way or another.
Thanks again!
Can you also share the Dolyak Reward? What event and where? I would like to do that to farm Karma too…
The dolyak reward was dolyak escort events in WvW. You’d get 250ish karma per dolyak escorted at 80. if your team held the whole map, you could escort 2 dolyaks at a time and get 500 karma every 6-7~minutes for walking.
They however removed all rewards because they were giving waaaay too much for the effort involved (there was often 30-40 people escorting 2 dolyaks in complete safety). They plan to put the rewards back on when they decide on a reasonable reward.
Thanks man. If I can give you and dronin + points for reply, I would (some forum calls it Favor points, some calls it Reputation, etc).
Btw, last Q, with my 200k Karma to spend, is it worth it to spend on the Karma Vendors near Ara or should I shoot for other vendors in other map or just hunt in the Dungeon/buy in TP/craft?
Heya Paranoid, thanks for the nice tip. I haven’t really roamed around Lion’s Arch, as it’s use to me is “just another map” so I can go to Bloodtide Coast from Gendaran Fields. I haven’t really stayed there since I came late to the game and spent my time leveling in Sparkfly Fen (from Lv45 to Lv70), then to Straits of Devastation (to 80)….
Edit: btw, is Cursed Shore part of “Orr”? I have been working on finding that map as I read it on the forum. I asked players in Map (from Straits of Devastation and in Cursed Shore) and none bother to reply (either players are busy, think my q is dumb, or there’s no one online)
Dronin, not sure why 42k is a joke but if you meant that 42k is too steep then I’m with you. I spent a lot of time trying to find Arah when I first got there but I can’t find it. Only after the patch did it I find it and found the two Karma Vendors with nice sets. But 42k for each piece made me stop getting any since a full set will leave me Karma dry.
Can you also share the Dolyak Reward? What event and where? I would like to do that to farm Karma too…

Hi All,
I posted a Q before, but unfortunately, it never got answered (probably none got past the first sentence): https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/thief/Newbie-Thief-needs-help/first#post290953
Anyway, I am now focusing on Gear. I have 200k Karma and roaming around Cursed Shore for Karma Vendor. There happens to be Karma Vendor near Ara entrance and found out that each piece costs 42k Karma which is a lot. I never encountered such price before, the most expensive I found before was around 1.4k Karma.
I am looking for Toughness/Vit to support my “guildmates” (composed of two kids and me, so 3 members all) and not focusing on Power or Crit, just purely defensive and HP to tank.
I am not sure if there’s any Karma Vendor that sells gear for cheaper and where they are. Or whether I should start learning how to craft my own….
I really would like to just buy with Karma first. If this fail, use Gold (but I only have 12G) , and of course, if Karma and Gold option is not possible, I can farm but that posed another problem: I don’t know where to get it, or which mob drops em…
Tnx all…
Hi all,
TL;DR: Need help with gear/build/guild. New to the game, sorry for newbie questions…
Good day. I am a new GW2 player, new to the GW world so I am still struggling to grasp a lot of things so I have a few q’s. I just hit Lv80 yesterday, I started in the game 3 weeks late (I came from Diablo 3, cling on to it hoping 1.0.4 will be better for me) and would like to gear up:
Skill Setup:
All default skills for D/D and P/P
6 is Healing/Stealth
7 is Signet (either Power/Precision/Shadow), mostly power
8 is Signet (either Power/Precision/Shadow) or Caltrops if I need to get “credit for event”
9 is that skill with yellow circles that makes you invis (and all allies under it)
0 is Thieves Guild
In WvW, I usually replace 7th or 8th skill with other traps. My traits are still at Master (haven’t bought the Grand Master) because I don’t want to mess it up too much. I am not sure if there’s trait point/skill point reset here so if in case it’s permanent, I have most of my skill/traits points intact. But I do have 20 in Critical Damage (Shadow Arts?) and 10 in Trickery and the rest is untouched.
1. Would like to know Best Build for PvE (Skills) – Right now I am using D/D and P/P. While I am Lv80, I still join “zerg” run in Straits of Devastation. In groups, all mobs are easy peasy. In solo, I can beat 1:1, but anything more than that and I usually have to do a lot of hit and run combo or stealthing around. For AoE, I use that 3rd skill for D/D (I only use P/P when I am low on HP or kiting) but still, I have hard time to beat more than one and it’s probably because my gears all mostly “blues/greens” that are Lv75s (I don’t know where to get Lv80 gear).
2. Gear – not sure if GW2 is gear dependent like D3 but I have a lot of Karma (80k?) and about 12 gold. I don’t know where to spend it. I don’t have accessories (i.e. rings etc) because I am afraid that anything below Lv80 are just “transient” items so I make do with what I found (i.e. it is not uncommon that my current gear are like 10 or more levels below my character level). So as Thief that use D/D mostly, I have no idea what Legendary or Exotic set I need to get (and why)….I also don’t know where to get them…
3. How to find a good Guild? I came from D3 community 3weeks late to GW2. I joined GW2 after seeing Krip (a D3 player) play GW2. I would like to join his guild, but being a newbie and at this point in time, his guild is probably full already. I don’t even know if they are in Maguuma server so I am at a lost. Does ANet have a website that shows Guilds? I can probably “file an application” to join that have active members EST time zone.
4. Any other skills I need to get? I don’t have Spinning Dagger, Hounds of Balthazar, or that Mistfire Wolf. I only have Thieves Guild as Elite Skill…reading descriptions of others, I don’t find them any useful…
The maps I visited are:
Divinity’s Reach, Queensdale, Kessex Hills, Gendaran Fields, Hilrathi Land, Lion’s Arch, Bloodtide Coast, Sparkfly Fen, and Malchor’s Keep. I still have a lot to discover…
Haven’t been to any dungeon, as my experience with some free MMO before, dungeons are meant for group. I am a group of “1” so it’s probably tough for me. I do have my 2 Thieves, but duration and cooldown is a bummer!
Tnx to those who will respond, for flamers, trolls, tnx for the bump but I will probably not reply to those. Tnx for reading as well, if you can, say hi in this thread (if only to bump it as well)…
Also, I made a guild because I thought by making it, i can evade/avoid the Guild Invite from random people (turned out it’s useless and I paid good money to create a guild). But if I can’t join any guild, anyone is welcome to join mine. Only requirement is that you are nice (i.e. don’t have bad mouth, do not scam, cheat, hack, lie; enjoys exploring the game world together with other players (new and old to the game), have a knack to help when possible and willing to share knowledge and be able to accept new info from others)…
TL;DR: Need help with gear/build/guild. New to the game, sorry for newbie questions…
