It take a few days to a few months to know if two people are meant to be together. Guess not for you in this case. Please tell me one game’s endgame stuffs is different every day and month.

That’s easy UO the very first MMO I played didn’t have an Endgame it was open community and the people created the content themselves. Pks pushing good people out of a mining area, let go beat those punks. Want to go cannibal and chop people and eat them (before they got sued) go for it. Hell I could get on sit down with some chaps and play chess in a tavern. Play commodity broker by purchasing out reagents and hocking them on a corner yelling prices. Go build a house. Tame Dragons.

ArcheAge comes to mind.

Though ya every MMO eventually hits a dead end where there are limited options except like UO and ArcheAge and open world games like that.

Ya I can go play those MMOs and probably will. The question isn’t about other games it’s about what does GW2 offer me?

isnt Archeage only coming out for China? it does look pretty, got to give it that

Ye, random, obiouvsly. I was focusing on the fact lv20 only is not needed. I see plently times on chat lfm lv20 daily, when they should just have progressed doing a lv28 run for example, hoping to get the ring.

yeah your best shot is to hit up the 10.20,30 on each toon of 80 you have

all you are worried about is your gear, I could own you in greens.

I dont recall mentioning a class I played or how I played it. So enlighten me as to how you can make any supposition or intelligent guess as to my nature of play?

Such coherence…..

Also ther are 2 tiers between a yellow back item and an ascended back item

Add 2 rings

But the excuse of the not noticeable difference have alreadybeen proved wrong quite a lot of time….

yeah its a .65% difference in total statistic ratio with all 3 pieces. At lvl 80 you have (4×916) 3664 points of base stats. Traits add another 1400, so that’s 5064. Full exotic gear gives around 1800 stat points, so total of 6864. Getting +10% (you actually only get 8.5% increase, but you only get a yellow back so its commensurate) stats from your gear equals 180 stat points. Difference between 6864 and 7044 is (180/7044×100)= 2,55%. There are the facts, where are yours? The total effect to damage depends on where the stats are..but 18 pts in 3 stats isnt going to save you, its not even a 1% increase in crit rate. It would be about 3-6% extra crit damage.

Quote from Chris Whiteside on Reddit today:

We absolutely design everything we do with minimal grind and will continue with this principal moving forward.

The current state of fractal rings completely contradict this statement. We have to grind fractal 10/20 every day for a chance at a ring.

Actually, you can get the ring on every first maw fight, based on the level rank you’re in. For example, if you want the infused ring, a lv22 instead of a lv20, will still get the reward + ring

no its random, you dont always get it.

You shouldn’t compare GW1 to WoW. That’s just unfair. Look at it this way. My boss probably earns a rough million euros a year (or could pay himself that if he wanted). Does that mean I don’t earn good money with my 50k per year? One has to put things in perspective.

OK you’re right, WoW made billions. It’s the only MMO ever to achieve ten figures. Probably the only game ever. It’s an outlier, statistics 101 tells you to ignore WoW income numbers and focus on what’s the norm. Breaking even is already insanely difficult in the gaming industry.

On the other hand, GW1 still made a pretty solid income. Not billions but at least enough to pay for the prolonged development of GW2. For a company who’s only ever made 1 game, that’s a huge achievement. Dare I say this was exactly because GW1 did not have vertical progression? I wager that’s the only reason people were still playing it after 5++ years. At times I left for months and when I came back, my character was still just as powerful.

Perspective.

and Speculation. The major selling point for alot of pvpers that I knew of Guild Wars was simply the Guild vs Guild function and the fact that it was buy once play forever. They could leave, play whatever else they wanted and then come back on weekends for a GvG match, then leave again.

GW1 did not stay on par with WoW financially…not even close. WoW made billions, Anet could have left NCsoft if they made Billions.

Sure, but that ship has sailed. Dozens of companies have tried to make a WoW-clone and failed, because WoW got there first. The skinner box tactic only really works on someone once. There will never be another WoW.

WoW made it’s money by selling an addictive, expensive, unethical product. They give you a free sample to taste, then jack the price up sky high.

You could make billions selling crack too.

It doesnt matter, Gw1 had nowhere near the subscriptions either. You did not give me parameters to discuss or a regulation I had to follow, the statement was made that Gw1 is on par with WoW and that is a fallacy. In utility to the people who played Gw1? Yes, that much is probably true. In any sense of general numbers though like number of players, number of subs, money made..GW1 is not on par with WoW.

So what is stopping you from doing that while you do this a little at a time? You’re limiting yourself because you have chosen to not move forward until you complete this task entirely..thats silly. The system isnt limited, you are.

I’m not sure what you’re getting at (and we’re probably drifting off-topic), but for some folks like myself, I tend to be focused on a particular objective before moving on to others, especially if the action before it has a prerequisite that needs to be satisfied before continuing on to the next objective. But if a certain action further down the list could easily be completed with the resources I have now without much detriment to a primary objective, then I might as well get that out of the way and complete it.

Likewise, since certain forking objectives share the same resources, in this case T6 materials for both Ascended upgrades/trade-ins and Legendary weapons, there has to be priorities that needs to be made. I suppose you could also add the theoretical Fractal weapon trade-ins for that. Though I would like to complete my Legendary at some point, I chose to upgrade my Ascended items because I need it to progress through the current content.

In other words, the expected completion of my Legendary can be pushed a bit. Besides, unlike Ascended rings which I have to hope for something to drop on a throttled progression of time (in this case, once per day), at least almost all the components in a Legendary can either be purchased, farmed in a reasonable time, or just can be paced accordingly.

you are right, this is getting off topic. I wouldnt mind weapons being given by tokens or rings for that matter. I think grinding should be left out of it though. There are dailys for a reason..because you only have to do each tier once a day and then you can do whatever else you want.

The Freedom to Choose

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ditton.3149

Ditton.3149

So I keep reading posts in this forum that state a mandatory grind. Let us break those last two words down..mandatory and grind.

Mandatory meaning something that is completely necessary to function properly. Grind is subjective, however its base meaning for the general population is a repeated activity that becomes mundane no matter how exciting it once was in order to achieve some level of goal. That goal could be leveling, finding a specific item or just collecting vendor trash to sell. So then a mandatory grind is a grind that is needed to function properly in the game, anyone see a problem with that statement? There is no mandatory grind, there is no activity that you absolutely need to participate in repeatedly in order to compete in this game.

You are choosing to participate in a mandatory grind because you want what that grind has to offer you. No one and no thing is forcing you to farm, grind, run the same dungeon or any other activity. If you want to explore, puzzle jump, visit with friends, make a new character, fight random monsters, help guildees with content you have already passed etc..then you can, its your choice. Neither WvW or SPvP will be greatly hindered nor saved through your selfless sacrifice of temporal opportunity cost. If you are in a guild that only does the high level content, well that was your choice, you knew what your guild was like before you joined them.

None of us need an item right now to play, we want it. It is freely available to pursue if we so choose, it comes with an opportunity cost. That cost to pay is not mandated by the game, its our own decision.

This is not an ascended speech, I do not care about ascended in the way that some of you do. This is a conversation detailing the truth of grinding and time cost, and that truth is that we decide what is a grind and not a grind. I do however believe that we need more to do, more activities that are not based in combat and are purely meant for entertainment.

When you don’t know when you’ll get the reward, you tend to play more as a result.

And there is a limit to that and i’m about to quit the game because of it.

yeah nobody cares about that honestly man. Its your own choice, if you want to play the game, then go play the game. No one is stopping you from exploring and seeing all the rest that the game has to offer. Id do this thing once a day..hit up 10,20,30 and then go play the game. If you’re sitting there grinding it out all the time for mats, then that is your choice to do so.

Keep playing until I felt I have explored every facet of that interests me in the game. That means along with attempting to get the best gear in the game, I also go through my achievements list and attempt them.

I don’t stop playing when I have reached the pinnacle of power. If that was the case, I would have never purchased Factions, Nightfall, and Eye of the North. In other words, I find exploring new content and developing my character in a variety of ways, besides gear, to be fun for me. That’s my idea of fun.

So what is stopping you from doing that while you do this a little at a time? You’re limiting yourself because you have chosen to not move forward until you complete this task entirely..thats silly. The system isnt limited, you are.

I personally don’t mind using T6 mats as long it’s not an insane amount of them. It’s bad enough that my Ascended quiver cannibalized on my stockpile that I wanted to use on my Legendary … but if I wanted to progress through harder levels, I might as well bite the bullet.

okay, what would you be doing if you had all your gear already? what would be fun to you then?

GW1 did not stay on par with WoW financially…not even close. WoW made billions, Anet could have left NCsoft if they made Billions, GW1 eeked by according to the financial reports. GW2 is not perfect, its kept my interest for longer than GW1 did though. GW1’s main selling point for me was GVG, otherwise it was a digital ccg with graphics. It was stagnant..you were collecting skills like a deck of magic cards and stacking them up. Skill progression is no different than item progression, the only difference is you get to click different buttons..so your stimuli isnt a shiney..its a different formation of buttons…woo hoo..how utterly “skillful” you are. GW2 needs more features like GVG and it will be just fine. Gw1 fans wanted this game to cater to them and one very poignant thing that the AMA had was O’brien saying they werent going to cater to one group of fans anymore, that includes Gw1 fans and thats whats really infuriating you guys, you thought this was YOUR MMO.

Ability progression like GW1

Ditton.3149

I was thinking that I honestly do like character progression but I don’t really enjoy gear progression. Is there a possibility of bringing in quests , dungeon running, pvp or rare monster killing that allows us to get more abilities we can shuffle into our weapon skill slots or even quests to unlock different weapon sets for classes. I enjoyed creating custom skill bars and builds in GW1 and I think that is sorely missing from this game. I know this game has aspirations of being an E-sport but I am not sure if that is even a reality at this point and some variety in skills would be welcomed. Part of the longevity of GW1 was character builds and it just feels kind of limited in this game.

I think people would be more receptive to this type of progression rather than gear grind. The reason being is that these new skills would be balanced against the base skills so that its more of a build variety flavor rather than power creep. You could even tie some of this crap to cash shop and make it profitable. For instance a skeleton skin for necro blood fiend or something etc

This is no different than weapon progression to me. Its just a way to mitigate enemy damage or do more damage, it provides no abstract difference to my character at all outside of using different skills to fulfill the same result. Im goal oriented, this progress serves the same purpose and thus is the same to me.

give me an army to raise, a ship to sail, let me overtake cities, build a castle that actually is mine and gets attacked by enemy npcs, let me find a merchant who sells rare items or just about anything that does not affect my character’s ability to kill things directly.

Yea that’s the point ability/spell/weapon progression like GW1. More abilities. Why do you even play a game with classes or anything outside of attack if you have such a distilled simplified view on them? All abilities and classes are is “another way to do damage or mitigate damage” as you put it. That doesn’t mean people don’t enjoy different ways to achieve the same result. Other wise whats the point in any form of class or ability? I understand your looking for some sandbox features here but that seems like a pay for the box type of content vs what I am asking for which should be doable before any expansions come out.

I dont want to earn what you are talking about, I think it should just be there as part of the character customization just like vanity. I dont consider any of that progression, it doesnt enhance my character or my quality of game time. You asked for other perceptions did you not? This is my perception. And abstractly I dont see a difference between classes, except that you choose “the engine” to mitigate or do damage. Skill and items are no different, they are affects to your character that affect game play, I would prefer something more if we are talking actual progression and not simply character customization.

OOO can u stop crying just from 10 days playing and doing evry daily u can get the full EXOTIC gear whit karma what are u STUPID or something ? we need something to make me log in i had the gear whit karma the 2 week from playing this game if u suck at this game so much and cant farm gear whic compare to ANY OUTER MMO is EPICLY EASy dont play mmos go play barby for comsetics

10 days at 4500(?) a jug gives you 45000 or 1 piece of gear. That leaves 207,000 to go. At 378 per event that’s 548 events needed. At 5 minutes per event(unlikely) that’s 45.6 hours total or 4.56 hours a day. Yes you can do it in 10 days, for most though just those 6 pieces of gear will take them a month and that doesn’t include weapons, accessories, or runes/sigils. Even if you have 60k karma upon hitting 80 you still need to spend 32.4 hours grinding karma beside the 10 karma jugs.

This game was not supposed to be a grind. Sure for those that spend 4-5 hours a day playing getting exotics is easy, but for the people that were marketed this game as low grind they aren’t. If you want a game where endgame gear is hard to get then there are plenty out there, go play them but don’t drag that mentality here.

Thats the point though, its not hard, its not even really resource/time intensive. Also..you dont need it for anything other than being competitive, are you competitive? if you are SPvP then you dont have to worry about it..and honestly in WvW you dont have to worry about it. So I ask you, why is it important that you have the best of the best given to you?

How is this game, in any way, shape or form a “grind”?

Grind to level 80
Grind to get money
Grind for mats to Craft
Grind on dungeons over and over to get obsolete gear, And Really really grind to get Ascended, Really really really grind to get legendaries..

How is this game not a Grind to be honest?

I never grinded for most of that. Its so easy to level in this game you have to purposefully slow yourself down. What I find interesting is that everyone touts horizontal progression..and states examples of exploration, puzzles, optional skins..and all those things are still available. I dont understand the need to be just as strong as everyone else when you have no intention of being competitive in the first place.

I can understand the frustration i too am very angry about this nov 16th patch but they did mention specifics about the future direction of the game including gaining these items and all we can do now is wait for their next patch.

yes because we should give how many chances to failnet? sorry, as far as im concerned, credibility was lost when they pimped the Hall of Monuments to GW1 players to have some major significance in gw2. it was a PR stunt to try and keep those players playing. and what do they do? instead of getting cool items/armor/weapons related to each title we earn, they just add a numerical value to it.

whys this matter? it means someone that farms for a month can equate what had taken me say 2 years to achieve.

when will the cotton wool fall out of your ears people. anet are amateurs. they brought this all on themselves claiming they would never have a vertical progression model even quoted by devs, also claiming content wouldnt be gated by gear level.

frauds are frauds. ive never seen people in mass amounts request a refund on this scale ever, and anet are giving them why? because they knew they marketed a product which isnt what we all paid for.

Then leave already lol..everyone is tired of this same old drivel. We want new complaints on the boards.

I agree with the GW1 Stagnant statement. After being in a top 20 guild for a couple of years, and running HoH every day became boring and the reason I quit. The next expansions released new worlds and skins, which were fun for a couple of hours, and then back to PVP most people went. Sure, new skills were released, but the number of useful skills were small and new strategies/builds were figured out a couple of weeks into each expansion.

This is really irrelevant. So running HOH every day against changing opposition in a changing metagame became stagnant? And I suppose grinding the same dungeon every day for some higher numbers on your gear will NOT become stagnant? Please. Higher numbers add nothing to the mix other than being a cattle prod to keep you moving.

and skills that do basically the same thing do? you push other buttons..great..so its not a skinner box..its a simon simulation lol…

I think GvG was GW1’s saving grace..we need more of things like that. GvG, let me own a city in the world, let me own something or take something that is significant. Thats horizontal progression..anything involving the character including new skills is still vertical progression, its just got its rails hidden a bit better.

speculation and useless conjecture.

Um, no?

lol, he said that ascended gear is going to be endgame for the next year

He also said that they want to continue increasing the power curve

Your post spoke of new tiers, new stats blah blah. They have said no new tiers and releasing ascended gradually through all of next year as a shallow power curve. You’re being dramatic because you want no power curve, its not a new set of gear entirely every 6 months, which is what your post said it is. Thats speculation and useless conjecture. You are speculating that we will need new gear every 6 months which is not what they have said and 2-3 items out of 12 do not make an entirely new set of gear either. So yes, what you have is speculation and useless conjecture, nothing factual.

They also said that they will likely release new tiers along with expansions.

You think they are just going to increase the power curve for the next year then just stop? Really? What would be the thought process there? If they are for an increasing power curve, they are going to keep doing it. If they are against it, they would stop it.

They have said they are going to continue increasing it. By what logic do you think they will stop increasing it?

you said every 6 months, now you are proposing year after year. You are trying to bolster your argument of saying everything is obsolete now because gear will be obsolete maybe in 2 years? What kind of argument is that? Im sorry Im just not as angry as you are about this, it just isnt that big of a deal to me. I would much rather them ignore all this crap and try to improve the wvw, spvp, skill selection, bugs, class balances..but all they get is this same drivel.

Your analogy assumes that grind is an objective term, when it is subjective. Mushrooms are very easy to identify: If it is a mushroom, it is a mushroom. A restaurant can say “We are mushroom free!” because nobody can walk in and point at one of their pieces of broccoli, and call it a mushroom. They’d get laughed out of the restaurant.

This is not so for grind. People can misinterpret any part of the game that they don’t enjoy that has a reward for participating a “grind.” Anything that isn’t fun to some people get’s labeled “grind.” And with that, now Arenanet is guilty for going back on their word!

It doesn’t work that way.

And here we have the brunt of the argument. (And yes it does work that way.)

Yes, ‘grind’ is subjective. As I said above: as is ‘fun’ and ‘challenge’ and ‘effort’.

The whole gaming genre (and entertainment industry really) is built on subjective terminology.

Society … and in a business sense, your customers … they decide what the norms are, and define those subjective terms. “Mass subjectivity” happens … to the point where the subjective is nearly the objective.

If 1,000 people are at a concert, and all of them say “man that was terrible” … it was terrible. If the band shouts from the stage, saying it wasn’t terrible … well, they’re entitled to their subjective opinions but the people have spoken. Terrible just happened.

Obviously not everyone is going to be in agreement. BUT, sooner or later you’ll find that fulcrum point. Maybe 300 people think the concert is terrible. 700 liked it to different degrees though. Is that success? Either way, you should try better next time.

What if 700 people found it terrible? Is it worth listening to then? Do we still dismiss it as “well that is just their subjective/opinion.”

I’ll be ignoring the latter part of your post, as it is not relevant. If I wanted to gang up on people, I’d move my character to Jade Quarry and do WvW. It’d be much more satisfying.

You’d be better off joining servers that fight against Jade Quarry and then insulting the Jade Quarry WvW folks … that seems to ensure you’re in the majority of ganger-uppers.

See, now THIS is interesting.

It sounds like, in your opinion, the best solution here would be an avenue upon which we can actually judge the most popular opinion of the community instead of assuming the vocal forum contributors and Reddit community are the voice of the game.

Maybe a platform upon which we could vote for changes in gameplay design?

I like that a lot, actually.

Cant really see that happening at all. Unless what they gave us was already a list of options they knew they could make happen. Otherwise customers would invariably choose the options that were the most resource intensive because that is what we do.

After mulling over this for a day, they seem like total liars.

The truth is simple, adding more horizontal progression would be expensive. Sticking in crummy vertical progression was cheap and easy.

Sadly, the people they pissed off most were their diehard fans from gw1.

This is what I think is truly the issue. All Gw1 fans believe they should be catered to first and any other fans second, at least this is how most of you act.

I’m in the process of requesting a refund for the gems that I used to buy/upgrade my exotic gear that was done under the impression that there would be no grind.

“Our games aren’t about preparing to have fun, or about grinding for a future fun reward. Our games are designed to be fun from moment to moment.”

The best thing that they can do right now is to downgrade the Ascended gear to Exotic quality and release a new, good-faith update to take players’ minds off of this.

At best – this is going to divide the community and ruin the game. With Christmas coming up, new games are coming out – and if GW2 has this kind of division and controversy, I think it will go the way of the ToR.

And what about the people who have been working their rears off to get the ascended? just slap them in the face and say “well sorry, our gw1 fans want it this way”?

speculation and useless conjecture.

Um, no?

lol, he said that ascended gear is going to be endgame for the next year

Let's discuss payment and entitlement.

So, I’m pretty angry right now.

I spent a lot of time, effort, energy, and gems into acquiring my two and a half exotic sets. I understood this to be an investment because, like GW1, this gear wouldn’t become obsolete.

With the implementation of Ascended gear, I’ve realized that this wasn’t the case. All of the gear that I so painstakingly earned and bought is now obsolete. I’ve realy worked for nothing.

I love the idea of horizontal progression – like GW1, working towards extra skins and other non-combat ways to differentiate your character. I feel chated, lied to, and deceived.

I would like a refund for my gems and for my exotic gear. Or, I would like them transmuted into Ascended gear.

Given exotics are still the “best-in-slot” available for everything except rings and back, how is your current set obsolete? The new ascended tier will be released over time, so you will still get some use out of the gear you have worked hard to obtain before you need to think about upgrading.

And then the thing between Ascended and legendaries comes out.

And then the thing after legendaries

And then the thing after that.

And it’s just an endless grind that becomes obsolete in 6 months.

speculation and useless conjecture. Chris said no new tiers of gear and would release minimal upgrades on small curve through all of next year. And yes I know you dont believe them, they are liars and etc etc

stop putting this same material on the forums, if you’re smart enough to write this up, you should know there is a way to have this done. Look under refunds on the support section. This is not constructive or conversational, its subjective and worn out.

Also the ToS says they can change the game any time they want, you pay for the right to borrow their property to create a character. They are nice enough to have a 6 month return policy I believe, which is more than most companies. Sorry you feel lied to, have a nice day.

I’ve seen it in another thread and decided to make a topic on it.

If, just in theory, Anet decided to release an expansion to GW1 and an expansion to GW2, which one would you buy/prefer?

neither

My objection is that they’re raising the time to acquire max-stat gear by a fair bit. Exotic-stats require 1-2 hours of playtime per-slot to get. That time cost makes it reasonable to keep a few sets of max-stat equipment for multiple characters and/or multiple play types (glass cannon vs. survival vs. support).

From what they’ve released, they apparently intend Ascended-tier junk (the new max-stat gear) to take much longer. Probably closer to 10-20 hours per piece. That’s more time than I want to put into max-stat gear.

That does not respect my time as a player.

This is the best explanation for my problem with the current state of the game I’ve ever seen

except they acknowledged this already and said they want to work to remedy exactly that situation.

They did not say that. They said that they would consider lowering costs (from the current 20-80g for max-stat backpack) or make Ascended crap available through other avenues. They did not ever say they intended to make top-stat gear available in much less time.

The guy said they were aware things were taking alot of material to make and that they wanted to look into making it less grindy, to me that says less materials, less farming and less time. If that doesnt mean the same thing to you, then thats cool I understand.

Good for you… still having faith. It is also possible you completely misunderstood what they were trying to say. Just as a lot of us did with their manifesto and pre-launch hype/promise.

Nah I just dont care either way. I bought the game because a friend wanted me to play it, I play because she plays, when we’re done..ive had my utility and Ill be fine either way. The setting of the game doesnt bother me as much as it does other people I guess, I just adapt.

yeah you want FFA, free for all..means I can attack you any time and usually you drop stuff.

a “controlled” FFA.
same thing as why isnt everybody killing each others in our modern world?

the game would need to make it hard on “bad guys”. but also rewarding.
maybe they couldnt go to major cities anymore or get bounties on their head or whatever.

i just find that right now, mmos are way to farmland style, in a sense that they are not dangerous.
the beast usually waits for you in the middle of the field and you can always attack it when you feel like it, or run beside. …

I know what you mean, its hard to implement. In general games like that only subsist on subscription models because most people end up leaving and you’re left with only the killers be they heroes or gankers.

the revolutionary thing is that you can be something in the world.

you can work for other players! aint that crazy.

andany players are chosen for their speciality.

Shadowbane did that and with less itemization and simulation. You could use tactics like psychological warfare and true spies in that game.

i think they will make changes if the metrics show that the drop rates are incorrect or messed up. I think the issue is that GW2 is not as agile as Gw1..changes seem to take longer and people are used to more consistent updates.

Exploits and bugs in fractals

A couple other dredge exploits for the list:

Just prior to Rabsovich on the door destruction path. Someone in the group had a stack of Ash Legion Spy Kits, which they used to cheese the door, after we downed a Reverberant and they grabbed the cannon. 10 seconds of uninterrupted stealth at the door.

Also for Rabsovich, the group decided to pull him out of the room to fight him away from his adds, completely debasing the whole fight.

I don’t think pull him away to fight him is an exploit. That’s a workaround. It’s no different than pulling a small group at a time to fight them in any situation. It’s just more tactical, safer, and much smarter than just charge into a group.

this I agree with..pulling a mob to be on his own..is just a tactic, not an exploit.

I still feel that some of the stuff are not exploits, but a workaround. Some are definitely exploits (like walking through walls on dredge), but that last seal? that feels more like a workaround to me.

Id buy this…if he didnt have hitpoint dependent mechanics and phases. Its built up as a climax, an ultimate battle..whats ultimate about knocking him out and blasting it with aoes? Why are the cages there? why spawn more mobs if the hammer isnt needed? None of that makes sense to me.

Why can't jewelers craft ascended rings?
