That would be true except for you picked an article to defend where the poster said explicitly that there were roving patches of people with ascended apparently owning everyone else….so yes, being able to tell if they were in ascended is relevant.

Erm, no I didn’t, I responded to a troll who plucked it out of thin air that the reason people were complaining was becasue they had lost to people wearing ascended gear and were looking for excuses.

Despite the fact half the people who have responded have barely played since the patch and people have pointed out numerous times, that currently with just three bits & tier 1 infusions, the advantage is tiny and unlikely to change the outcome of an encounter.

No, the “troll” didnt quote but he was following a line of posts where people were saying that there were already patches of ascended making a difference in WvW and the “troll” was asking how they knew it was ascended. I agree though, its unlikely to change any encounter in its present form.

I would say knowledge of whether someone is wearing ascended is relevant because if you cant even tell that the character has it on then how can you assess whether the reason you feel the other player had an advantage is due to gear or your own lack of skill compared to theirs?

You simply assume the former and deny the latter until prove otherwise? How…interesting. Id just like a basic idea of the facts that you follow in order to reach the undeniable conclusion that someone beat you only because they had on 3 pieces of ascended gear.

It is irrelevant, because you don’t need to fight anyone, statisically ascended gear is an advantage, it is a fact and yes, as pointed out many times, currently it is only a tiny advantage that will probably not make any difference 99.5% of the time, but as they roll it out to other slots and add tiers of infusions, then yes it will make a difference.

Some of us bought the game on what they actually said pre-release, a gear treadmill was not part of that, this game was sold on being different, LOL.

That would be true except for you picked an article to defend where the poster said explicitly that there were roving patches of people with ascended apparently owning everyone else….so yes, being able to tell if they were in ascended is relevant. Now as to whether its an advantage or not, the only thing I will state is that you can achieve slightly higher stats with it and not necessarily the stats you want.

Response to Response #1:

Only like three (?) slots currently have ascended items and legendary weapons are primarily for the visual effects. It’s a very minor part of progression in the game assuming you even care to have the 1% (guesstimate) increase in stats over exotics.

Response to Response #2:

Grinding is not the be all, end all of progression. Like I said above, the difference between legendary weapons to exotic weapons and ascended gear to exotic gear is so small that you’d likely not notice a difference. It’s only those hardcore players that want absolutely the best in slot for their tunes that would like care.

Without a “grind” then you’d have them on the forum complaining about nothing to do. It’s a no win scenario since they’ll complain about one thing or another. Anet can only release content so quickly and they don’t want to overwhelm all of the other players with content that they can’t keep up with.

Response to Response #3:

I was just being realistic to justify the initial cost. As an MMO, it’s expected that content is rolled out gradually. We’re running into two distinct polarities of players: hardcore and casual. I’m sure I don’t have to define each of them as we’ll as point out there are people who call in-between.

Anet, and likely nobody else, is capable of pushing out enough content updates to keep hardcore players occupied. It’s impossible to do so. All the other MMO’s incorporate a grind of sorts to give hardcore players something to do. Doing so will alienate casual players who don’t necessarily have all the free time to dedicate to the game and they’ll just feel overwhelmed and never be able to catch

point 1: The point wasn’t about stats, it was about things that players deemed worthwhile as investments in terms of time and effort. If they don’t deem the items worth the effort, then there’s one less factor to keep them in the game, and dampen their feeling of personal progression. Saying you don’t NEED the gear is a moot point, of course you don’t NEED the gear you might however WANT it, but when that desire it outweighed by the repulsion from the grinding it would take to obtain said horizontal progression piece. Then you’ve got a problem right there don’t ya, and no amount of “you don’t need it” will stop the players feeling that they’re being held back from one aspect of their progression simply because they don’t want to play the market or grind their behinds off.

point 2: That’s not something that you can say for certain, for me personally however most of the “pseudo-endgame” content that I would be initially interested in, degenerates into grinding in no time, sure if i was a more pvp orientated player it might not be as bad, but speaking for myself entirely here, my endgame is all grind, grind with a side dish of grind.

Even taking stats out of the equation, if everything stays the same you get stagnation, and as for the idea that if there wasn’t this structure that players would be complaining of nothing to do, when your grind is too boring, painful and long you get a LOT of players who don’t bother with it entirely, thus the same issue crops up, they have nothing to do. And no one is asking for a-net to pump out more content, that would probably just cause further problems and bugs for everyone… no one wants that.

point 3:

I’m totally against grinding, it should be minimized and not in the sense of daily quests or whatnot, I mean it should just not take you a few months to get something aesthetic… EVER.

I always feel the best designed games, are the ones that you enjoy playing and in doing so work your way towards a nice goal and reward. The completion of a ton of grind should not be the reward, the time you invest having and mastering aspects the game should lead to the rewards and in fact be one in itself. and not just one big carrot at the end, as you’ll probably give up halfway and decide that it’s too demoralizing and quit the game entirely.

Right now GW2 seems to be comprised of large carrots after pointlessly long grinds, or silly busy work and/or “use your imagination” esque flighty playstyles and ideas

So basically..you think there should be no carrot, no enhanced gameplay and anyone and everyone should be able to get anything within a few days? I dont think there would be any less complaining if they made every fight in the game harder with more difficult AI, I believe we would just see a different set of complaints.

i did it because i wanted my toon to have everything maxed out and i thought it would be an account purchase not restricted to the character i was playing.

Well it doesnt, honestly this isnt all that greedy to me. You dont have anything else that affects every bag slot, if I put a 20 slot bag in one of my toons they dont all get one. Its 400 gems I think? Thats not enough to be something that appears on every toon you will ever make.

“0 communication makes us all think you don’t care for the concerns of your customers.”

My thing is this. We’ve been having this thread open for almost a month now, with no answer:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Change-in-loot-parameters-or-a-bug-Merged

We are the customers, we paid the money to buy the game and some of us actually spent large sums in the store.

Why is it that these threads are open for so long but the only posts we get from anyone is don’t break the forum rules or nothing at all? Can we have answers to our questions please? The AMA didn’t mention a single thing about the loot issues, magic find, or fixing the bugs and bad designs of the professions. It was filtered to take all of those topics out entirely.

All we’re asking for is communication not from a coordinator, not from a moderator but from the devs themselves. I follow the dev tracker daily and never see a thing in there about the real concerns of the community, I’ve followed interviews performed recently about the state of the game. There’s nothing. I seriously thought when I was looking into this game and it’s developers that they were people who were interested in communicating with their fans. When we don’t get any answers speculation and irritation sets in. All we would like is a reply from one of the devs, doesn’t matter who.

Sincerely,

A customer with questions.

actually it did mention the loot issues..he said he needed metrics before he answered it..nothing since then though.

I hate it when people say forum users are the minority of the community.

We aren’t. Anyone who knows about maths and sampling knows that forum goers provide a snapshot of the community and what we say reflects generally the feelings of the whole player base.

I know forum users = self selected sample so we arent totally reliable for feedback but that doesnt mean the people here and on other forums culminate to be a minority. It doesnt.

Most of the forum users are ex beta players and GW1 fans from a quick cursory glance over at things, that is not a sampling of the open community at large.

The people who actually come to forum are the people who share their feedbacks about the game positively or negatively. those “who enjoy the game and play it and never bother the forums” are those who either mindlessly play the game or just plainly apathetic.

Which by definition and operative function makes the forum not a stratified sampling like the OP makes it want to be.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Guild Wars 2 Should Go Free2Play

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ditton.3149

Ditton.3149

No please

and about your idea … The arenanet is company, can you tell me why they should give free product to people? Guild Wars 2 is protuct itself, gems are also the product. Why should they give their money they would make for players for free?

Well, ANet can produce a infinite amount of GW2 access for free because of the nature of software industry. People who gets to play the game free wouldn’t have purchased the game anyway and ANet will make money even if a small % of these players ever bought gems or even indirectly influence another to purchase gem.

Um… this is a stupid idea. The game only costs initial purchase and that is a huge source of income for ArenaNet.

The current system is far superior to free-to-play and supports the continued development of the game.

It WAS a huge source of income to ANet. Not anymore because the sales of box have long since reached its peak and now only serve as a obstacle to recurit new players. I would imagine the majority of “continued” revenue comes from the gem store, so expanding that to more players would be a smart business decision.

you got any facts to back any of this up? According to the people that run the company they are still doing better than ever expected. So if their financial business model is proving to be more lucrative than expected why should they change it and risk alienating people? This seems short sighted and parochial.

thousands of people played the same gw1 content for 4 years and its audience barely diminished untill the day gw2 came out. it did not have a shelf life it needed an update or xpac.

problem is people have to sign off on those, you guys talk like Arena net made money hand over fist and could do anything they wanted. If it were true..you would be playing the game you imagined and they would be creating content for only one type of player, fact is..it wasnt. They have exceeded every financial metric they imagined for this game even up to and including the disaster that was the last live event.

Ditton.3149

With all the talk of folks feeling disheartened and generally no longer motivated to log into GW2, those who don’t feel the same can’t help but ask “why”… and up until now, I haven’t been able to describe why properly. It’s something that a lot of us feel but few can place exactly- we used to love to log into GW2, but after the Nov 15th update it’s just not… GW2 anymore.

Then, today, I ran across a completely unrelated post from 2011 about Immersion in MMOs that I think hit the nail on the head perfectly for me. The particular paragraph was this:

I’ve been in games where gamers were discussing how they need one piece of equipment because it will will boost another ones str by .3% or something like that. When you start discussing percentages and ratios, crunching numbers, when you basically have playing an mmo down to a science, are you really immersed in the mmo or is this just another type of game play style?

http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/312791/Is-it-possible-to-be-immersed-in-an-mmo-nowadays.html

With the end-game heading in a direction of gear progression, when most of us thought it was a gear plateau and based instead on story progression, the immersion of the game suddenly took a fall.

Before, when I logged into my character I knew that, stat wise, he was done. It was no longer about numbers. I had my build, my exotics. My character was, for all intents and purposes, “complete”. This is how GW1 worked; it made sense that GW2 would work the same. From that point on, what I would be working towards was bettering my own player skill, getting whatever looks I desired, and completing whatever story was left. Any content that came out I could do, limited not by my armor like so many WoW clones but by my personal player ability. If I was good enough, I was going to complete the content.

So when that changed, it was a sobering reality. In the end, this game like all the others is about gear as much (or more) than player skill. Without ascended gear, I will not achieve level 20 or 30 of fractals, regardless of how good I may personally be. Without ascended gear, I will not be 100% equal in stats to those who have it in WvW. Suddenly, as with other gear based games, the phrase “more skilled” is synonymous with “better geared”.

GW2 was amazing because it was immersive. Moreso than any other game. But that immersion has been slaughtered.

THAT is why I am demotivated.

I was never immersed in the game. Im not playing it as much because its boring..ascended pieces or no ascended pieces my friends left because in the end its repetitive nonsense. Not everybody cares about hunting for a suit..how immersing is that? Ive yet to read a legendary tale where the great conquering hero says “yeah this armor is awesome..but would look so much better in baby blue, yeah!!”

I never got into Gw1 either, I played GvG and then left it and did something else. Always seemed like a second rate RPG to me, if I wanted a band of heroes Id play a DnD game.

I dont think the same concept would have brought anyone over here except the Gw1 fans. I know the community of GW1 fans seem hurt that this game has not given them more of a voice. I think during beta they felt as though they had more voice than they really did, or they were given the impression that their voice would more significantly matter and would be heard all the time like it was then. This is a continuation of Guild Wars in lore only really.

I’ve played games without the trinity, but honestly, I wish I could have actually played this game before dumping $60 into it… It sucks not having a convenient friend in the game the only weekend they decided to let trials exist…

I honestly came to the game expecting it to be more like those games, where you don’t really have a tank or a healer, but you had the abilities of a tank and healer… Where you could shield yourself to prevent damage while healing yourself and doing damage in between. While there is a sense of that, like switching to a shield to block an attack then going back to your 2h, it just feels way too bland, and too much of it is rolling around or letting something chase you while other people kill it.

But that’s just me though, I’m a bigger fan of ability based mitigation than the dodge everything approach. Dodging should be a part of the game, but not in the excess that it is now, I just think it’s more fun when you’re planning around the fact that you’re going to get hit, so how are you going to keep yourself alive and be able to live through the next one that comes?

lol..there are tons of abilities that negate attacks from projectile reflection/deflection abilities to blocks to build in evades..if all you do is run and dodge then you should take some time to actually learn the system.

Agree. Ok, there has to be respawns for other players to kill but they shouldn’t be about 30 secs to 1 min apart.
Another example, I actually got teamed up with another player and we went for a paticular Skill Point down at some dead end. So we had me, a Ranger and him, an Engineer, both 80. We killed the mobs and then went to get the skill point. In the middle of communing the mobs respawned
We managed to get the skill point and started to fight our way out but to no avail, wave after wave of respawns came and we must have killed them about 6 times, as someone said we could do it all day but then boredom kicks in and concentration goes and one dies. I see no fun in being stuck in one place for ages just killing the same mobs respawning over and over again.

And as for getting more skill, Well I’ve got all my skills but in certain parts when your 4 or 5 mobs against you, you just rely on luck.

Last night I soloed 5-6 mobs at the same time. Much to my surprise. Go me!

…but doing so didn’t make further travel any easier. Once I took them all down, there were already one or two more on their way to continue the engagement.

That’s the problem, as I see it: the high probability of an endless combat loop.

There’s no real extra challenge in that. If I can defeat 1-3 mobs the first time, then I can defeat them the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th time as well. The scenario doesn’t get more difficult. It does get more exasperating, though.

There are other things I want to do, things I want to look at and explore, events I want to get to. But it reaches a point where the endless aggro actually prevents me from experiencing anything else in the zone.

I call that a design flaw.

A flaw would entail that it was unintended..I think its completely intended. I look at it like one of those zombie apocalypse movies..you cant be seen..you cant stop, you are not in charge and you are not the top of the food chain. I like it for a brief time..then it does get old, I just leave the area when the feeling becomes monotony.

How much does this review resonate with you?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ditton.3149

Ditton.3149

Here’s a review written by forbes.

I like to think of forbes as a reputable source. Much of what’s written there is reasonable and it resonates with me as what I see to be problems with GW2. Whilst GW2 isn’t a horrible game, the truth of things is is that it’s no better of a game than WoW, and it’s not that dissimilar either. What dissimilarity does arise from it is muchly an illusion.

That’s the problem with GW2 for me. And what I’m finding is that with the inclusion of tiered gear, GW2 has moved just that final step toward being a WoW clone. A WoW also-ran. That’s how I feel about it. But don’t just reply to this. Read the article and see whether it resonates with you and helps to illustrate my feelings at all.

One of the important quotes was this one:

While described as “action combat” it nevertheless isn’t really reliant on any player skills so much as it is on damage-per-second and your level.

And that’s completely true. The thing is is that with Ascended gear, GW2 is even more relying on stats over skill, to the point where the game is just playing itself. It’s just numbers vs. numbers, and that’s the biggest letdown at all. There are no shows of skill to be found anywhere in GW2 other than perhaps in sPvP. But everywhere else? None.

Compared to other games I’ve played, like ME3’s multi-player, where things like skill, the ability of players to co-operate with each other, and tactics can be shown, and at higher difficulties are even required… I just find GW2 to be a flop in comparison. I was expecting something more like ME3, but the notion of skill involved is an illusion. Only numbers matter.

The reviewer goes on to point out that barrel rolling is too clunky to be useful due to the nature of the combat, which I agree with, too. Combat is too slow, and the barrel roll is just unhelpful. If characters simply moved faster, such long and elaborate rolls wouldn’t be necessary. Again, to see how you do this right, you need only look at the speed of movement and dodging in ME3, which is organic and intuitive by comparison. In ME3 you can quickly dodge back out of range of foes as is needed.

It touches upon other things, too, including the similarity of both renown and dynamic events to the fetch quests of yore, and that the illusion of variety (simple reskins of skills/objects) quickly dies off, leaving only repetition. It’s just the same skills over and over with slightly different animations and button pictures. And combat skills have the same problem, too. Too few combat skills which are all very similar, no true variety on offer. And I like his point about being able to acquire new weapon skills as time goes on too as a form of sidegrade-based horizontal progression, so you can mix & match what works for you, similar to GW1.

All in all I find that this review is quite intriguing and it really hits the mark on a number of things. Again, GW2 isn’t a horrible game. This review says that, too. It’s just that GW2 is basically WoW in far, far too many ways. And I don’t want WoW, neither does the reviewer. We’re both waiting for that MMO that will truly break the mold, rather than creating a grand illusion of doing so with PR speak.

So… does this review resonate with you?

no the review doesnt resonate with me. Neither does the same bland material rehashed a million ways on this forum. GW2 is not an action game, its an RPG game with action dodging..you can move out of the way of most attacks if you keep moving and learn to position yourself away from the area of effect of an enemy’s attack. Enemy attacks have a certain shape to them..if you learn the shape you can move out of the way if you are quick enough..if you are trying to get that last bit of dps in though you’re going to get squashed..besides many classes have evades and movement built in to their attacks when used properly. Its not Assass Creed 3 plus RPG though..it never will be, too many abstract elements in place imo.

I want to make gold.
In a reasonable fast way.
Without legendary precursors being 400g.

I want to farm in a area with mobs that drop a specific mat or item that i know will net me money.

I want to farm in an area so i can get t6 mats to make exotics to salvage, or sell.

I want to make gold. To be the best.

And im not a bot or gold seller.

I honestly think they nerfed gold to make gems > gold more attractive.

Whenever Ive wanted to make gold, Ive never found it difficult. I have no desire for a legendary, its just above my level of want in this game. If I did, I would think of it as a goal to be reached slowly, cumulatively over the time period of about a year. The issue with shinies is that non hardcore players see them and want them without doing hardcore things. If I want charged cores and lodestones..there are dungeons and mobs that drop them. Honestly there is little need to make money in this game if you are not going after your legendary or another skin. If you dont want to do hardcore playing..then you arent going to get hardcore rewards in hardcore time. I dont see the problem with that..alot of people do though.

Lost Shores Participation Reward

I’m just trying to figure out how they are going to decide who gets the reward and who doesn’t.

I mean there was many factors to take into account on why people couldn’t participate:

-DC’d during event and couldn’t loot chest
-Didn’t loot chest fast enough before it despawned
-Couldn’t log in cause the login servers were down so they missed the event

And a few others as well. How are they going to know who had these issues, and who simply just wasn’t there? Myself for example, couldn’t even log in for the event cause the login server was down. Then when I got in, I got DC’d and kept getting DC’d a couple more times after that. By the time I finally got into the game, the event was over. So while I wanted to be there for the event, I couldn’t even log in to play it cause of server issues and DC’s.

As for the reward itself, I really hope it isn’t like what Moxic said, and it is just a “buy off”. People ended up with the Accessory, and 20 Slot, and a Legendary to boot. I hope the compensation is of equal value at least.

I didnt get a precursor. You should get a shot, not a guarantee.

I wouldnt remove it I would just make ascended like spvp. You go there its on, you leave its not.

This is actually a brilliant idea! I like it!

if FoTM worked like sPvP as in you had have you own gear locker and Ascended gear would be something like the armor you get in sPvP only that can be upgraded with infusions but you revert back to your exotic set outside of FoTM… it might solve the WvW issue!

The only possible downside is people who like vertical progression might feel the rest of the game is closed to them as their best gear is locked in FoTM and so thats the only content they can play? I dont know.. anyone who likes vertical progression could possibly tell us their opinion on this idea?

I agree, honestly thought this was what it was going to be. It doesnt bother me either way, but this would be a fine compromise imo.

yeah its a .65% difference in total statistic ratio with all 3 pieces. At lvl 80 you have (4×916) 3664 points of base stats. Traits add another 1400, so that’s 5064. Full exotic gear gives around 1800 stat points, so total of 6864. Getting +10% (you actually only get 8.5% increase, but you only get a yellow back so its commensurate) stats from your gear equals 180 stat points. Difference between 6864 and 7044 is (180/7044×100)= 2,55%. There are the facts, where are yours? The total effect to damage depends on where the stats are..but 18 pts in 3 stats isnt going to save you, its not even a 1% increase in crit rate. It would be about 3-6% extra crit damage.

Ascended weapons will have 5% more base damage. Total damage you do per attacks is your power * weapon damage. So even someone with 0 power, crit or crit damage in his gear will do 5% more damage per hits with ascended gear than someone without. Add in the extra power and crit damage and we are well into 10-15% more damage for DPS oriented ascended gear.

There are no ascended weapons out right now. Im dealing with facts not fiction or speculation. An extra 5% crit rate, and 18 pts in power is not going to save you or win you a fight based on stats alone. how do you know it will have 5% more damage? They want a small power curve, how do you know it wont be a 1% extra base damage? You don’t..you only know that we have an ascended backpack and rings out right now. If anything, the extra damage has much more to do with the multiplicative aspect of crit% damage than anything else.

how can you tell that more people dislike ascended gear then people like it?
!

with numeric evidence on the forums (too much for the vocal minority excuse).

Thinking what made GW1 successful
with the poll they did
because valuing grinding over skill has proved to be a BAD and surpassed system in mmorpgs at least 10 years ago….despite some mmorpgs still adopt this.

Now those are tools not fault proof for sure but taking all of them becomes quite a proof.

On the other side, is there any evidence most people wanted vertical progression?
I didn t see any.

Imho we shouldn t even discuss this

They just will try to keep most of their old playerbase and attract some more……quite greedy and unfair imho but its only my opinion.

speculation, they just started lumping these threads together. I would wager that if you lumped all of the “this game needs more progression” threads that it would be just as large. The GW1 fans wanted this game to cater to their needs first and it isnt, they are infuriated and dont seem to care that anyone elses playability would be stepped on as long as they got the MMO they wanted.

By the way, just the fact that the people are on the forums makes them a particular customer base and in no way a proper sampling as their qualities do not represent the whole. This is not a stratified sample and does not represent a microcosm of the population as a whole.

I also agree with Galen, no one is forcing you to get ascended gear, its not going to impact your game. You’re choosing to let it ruin your experience because you cant stand that someone could be less than a % stronger than you.

Legendary, why is it legendary ?

A bit back to topic.
Colin Johanson: We just don’t want players to grind in Guild Wars 2.
This is why i said its gem related.
Doing 100% is fun, in time u done it , u already have 200SP. Playing a bit more and we are done with fun events/dungeon runs (karma).
What is left for legendary craft then if not grind xxxx mobs for xxx mats ?
Gem store ?

I think its your opinion, its meant to do a little at a time. Set a goal, get one lodestone per trip out, make 10 gold any way you want per day…that isnt a grind. If you are using the gem store or grinding, it is your own decision. Stop pretending the developers are threatening you with metal bludgeoning instruments to farm gold all day.

Legendary is a game term, you are using meta examples though to lessen its impact. Think about this in game…"I have slain thousands of corrupted beasts to procure their hearts, traveled the world from the frosted peaks of the Norn to the undead wastes of Orr, found the ancient blade of dusk after killing thousands to get to it, forged sacred metal from ores that line the earth, and captured the essence of night into a blade…all of this to create a sword that captures the night sky within its mirrored blade..I have created ‘Twilight’…..that sounds pretty kitten epic to me. The problem is, its not legendary to you..thats hard to do though, in truth no matter how “legendary” they make it..it will always just be a series of tasks to create.

Im not trying to make point here, i honestly wanted to see how community that QQ for days now, over ascension gear, is on other side completely ok with “buy to be cool” policy on legendary.

But to answer your question just look at ‘most’ of the legendary items, in a mass of 50+ people in WvW you can easily spot anyone with a legendary.

Not to me, i hardly get to load all ppl in WvW

vertical vs horizontal progression

Seriously dude…WTF does player culling have to do with progression? This is becoming “el nino” for this board…its getting absurd

Yeah, a few rings. I bet if you didn’t have them you would think the same, right…

And drkn, you can’t get rings with grind because dailies stop you.

no I wouldnt. I dont have a precursor, abyss nor celestial dye, I dont have the rare drops that are popping up from other dungeons. I dont have alot of rng things..Im working towards a few. I just play when I want and stop when I dont, stuff accumulates through time.

Ability progression like GW1

Ditton.3149

This would be the only thing that makes GW2 interesting but they won’t do it. And Ditton, some skills could be used for certain parts of a dungeon or area. In GW1 you didn’t just choose a random set of skills and be able to clear any part of the game lol they had certain functions, like if an area was heavy with ranged you build against it, if it was heavy melee you build against it. etc.

It just makes the game less boring, that’s all. The current skill/build system is just atrocious idk how anyone can enjoy it sticking to one build forever… to each his own I guess. One of the things I loved about WoW was it used to be pretty great with talent specs, you could just play the way you wanted in vanilla and build as a hybrid if you wanted but now they are extremely linear like GW2 is. Idk why games keep going for linear, it’s not interesting at all. More builds and skills to choose from can only bring good to the game, there will always ALWAYS be balance issues in an MMO so that should not even be a topic of discussion honestly.

Thats my point..you see a new obstacle/card player and you build a deck/skill setup to play against it. I prefer a less fluid method of combat because it promotes the idea of using skills in different ways. I do get it though, I do think more skills would be better and at the very least a much shorter cooldown on utility skills.

realism has no place in a fantasy game when thinking in terms of balance. Sorry..but just because you think a bullet should do more than a sceptre, doesnt mean it should. If you want full on Sci Fi or War hero..then go play it. Pistols and rifles cant be the same damage..you can wield two pistols, you can not wield 2 rifles..that would be awesome though. Anyways, I can get off 3 unloads in the time it takes for one deadshot..I do about 6-8k on an unload so its pretty equivalent.

That’s a nice logical fallacy you have there. Let me fix it for you. Sure it’s a fantasy game with RL weapons included. Since the RL weapons are in there one would think there would be more logic involved with the balancing of the power of those weapons other then cutting them off entirely. If they didn’t want to have the challenge of balancing RL weapons of war then why put them into a fantasy game in the first place, why not make all weapons including those of war all magical all the time for it to be truly a fantasy setting.

Basically you’re saying that it’s still okay even if the engineers suddenly could drop a nuclear bomb for enemies to be perfectly fine after being hit by that despite the knowledge otherwise just because it’s a game. There’s still a basic scale to be used for these weapons to compare damage output. All anyone’s asking for is a more logical approach to that scaling.

its not a logical fallacy..because comparing magic which doesnt exist to science fiction that doesnt exist is not logical, its theoretical at best. What you are saying is that you want them to limit their imagination and what things can do to line up better with physically accurate real life proportions, which I think is stupid. I think they should just do what they are doing and balance the numbers and systems in the game, let the pseudo realism be kitten

Oh and no..Im not wearing all berserker gear. If you mean should we have more skills and or options then yeah I agree with that much, id love a few more options in combat. I just dont think balance and real world physics applications have anything to do with one another in game mechanics.

The issue is that its not a game only for GW1 fans, its not your MMO and yes, all companies are driven by money. Anet was under a failing company, this might be that company’s last chance to make money. So no matter how romantic we want it to be and how in touch with us the developers are, unless they are their own studio without a publisher like NCsoft over their head..they have to answer to a budget. I honestly wish this ascended issue would go away..because its the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what is wrong with this game.

Ability progression like GW1

I was thinking that I honestly do like character progression but I don’t really enjoy gear progression. Is there a possibility of bringing in quests , dungeon running, pvp or rare monster killing that allows us to get more abilities we can shuffle into our weapon skill slots or even quests to unlock different weapon sets for classes. I enjoyed creating custom skill bars and builds in GW1 and I think that is sorely missing from this game. I know this game has aspirations of being an E-sport but I am not sure if that is even a reality at this point and some variety in skills would be welcomed. Part of the longevity of GW1 was character builds and it just feels kind of limited in this game.

I think people would be more receptive to this type of progression rather than gear grind. The reason being is that these new skills would be balanced against the base skills so that its more of a build variety flavor rather than power creep. You could even tie some of this crap to cash shop and make it profitable. For instance a skeleton skin for necro blood fiend or something etc

This is no different than weapon progression to me. Its just a way to mitigate enemy damage or do more damage, it provides no abstract difference to my character at all outside of using different skills to fulfill the same result. Im goal oriented, this progress serves the same purpose and thus is the same to me.

give me an army to raise, a ship to sail, let me overtake cities, build a castle that actually is mine and gets attacked by enemy npcs, let me find a merchant who sells rare items or just about anything that does not affect my character’s ability to kill things directly.

Yea that’s the point ability/spell/weapon progression like GW1. More abilities. Why do you even play a game with classes or anything outside of attack if you have such a distilled simplified view on them? All abilities and classes are is “another way to do damage or mitigate damage” as you put it. That doesn’t mean people don’t enjoy different ways to achieve the same result. Other wise whats the point in any form of class or ability? I understand your looking for some sandbox features here but that seems like a pay for the box type of content vs what I am asking for which should be doable before any expansions come out.

I dont want to earn what you are talking about, I think it should just be there as part of the character customization just like vanity. I dont consider any of that progression, it doesnt enhance my character or my quality of game time. You asked for other perceptions did you not? This is my perception. And abstractly I dont see a difference between classes, except that you choose “the engine” to mitigate or do damage. Skill and items are no different, they are affects to your character that affect game play, I would prefer something more if we are talking actual progression and not simply character customization.

Maybe not for you I guess but I suspect that there are a lot of people that miss this part of GW1 and I am appealing to this crowd not you apparently.

Yeah you are right, loads of awesome people I know loved GW1. I never got into GW1, bored me to tears. I played gvg with my guild and then went and did other things. I found skill capping and build crafting to be like digital ccg with a graphics update, just creating a deck to deal with whatever was in front of me.

The grind for a stat increase of 1%…something meant to be achieved by working for it an hour a day for a period of time for casual gamers, or all at once for hardcore gamers.

They need to change the reward idea..people dont seem to want rewards, they want gifts. Let us do the modicum of any kind of playing your game possible and receive the best option available for that small expanse of time.

I suppose that’s more or less what most of us who were caught off guard by this “slow statflation” alien invasion were expecting to see in this game. Increased stat flexibility/combinations to help each different build you come up, not increasing stats.

Before people start barfing this is a “manifesto cry baby” thread: no, I don’t think they ‘betrayed’ me. I just think they are throwing away what made them shine.

honestly I think that is the overlaying issue. You have people who for either the manifesto or their previous GW1 experience think that Anet had an original awesome idea..and then those like me who never liked or never played GW1 and didnt believe the manifesto in the first place, they just thought this sounded like a good game. I never saw the shine in GW1 in the first place and the first thing my friends said when I told them the end game was cosmetic rewards and no more content was “wtf, is this a japanese flash animation clothing simulator?”

You are misinterpreting their words again…. They NEVER said grind = time sink. Those are your words. His words were:

“I think grind is repetitive game play leading to a goal where the activity of progression isn’t fun whether it not be fun initially or it suffers from diminishing returns over a period of time.”

His words are almost exactly the definition of time sink. Collection 250 t6 craft mats is not fun, it’s grind. Doing FotM over and over again isn’t fun, it’s grind. Killing mobs till you have enough gold to afford ascended gear isn’t fun, it’s grind.
If he uses the word grind he should use it in the common way: Doing something multiple times to (maybe) reach a goal.

An acceptable amount of time for a single piece of ascended gear would probably be 90 minutes. Everything longer than that is grind.

That is your opinion, Id rather it be a bit more time intensive than that. Something I can work towards doing and finish about once a week.
