Why does everyone think Dual axes are bad? Geez, I guess no one knows how good things are until someone bludgeons them in the face with a “pro” player using it…

MH axe is -ok- for conditions but its better for power because its damage is, you know, kinda based in raw damage unless you want to rely solely on a 5stack of bleed for damage that is, I know I don’t…

I use dual axe + longbow atm and have gotten great success, it has good damage, can easily apply 5 stacks of bleeding, chill, and weakness, both chill and weakness are on the stronger end of conditions you can apply, with -66% movement speed and +66% recharge time on chill and -75% damage and endurance regen on weakness, pair that with an ice drake + owl/snow leopard and the enemy can’t do kitten.

The #4 is lack luster for everything other than applying a large amount of a combo field affect, but it’s pretty amazing at that, hits infinite enemies (no, not just 5) up to 2 times and applies the projectile finisher effect on each one hit, and is 100% finish chance.

yeah, pets run faster than players do, wanna know how to test this? hit F1 as you’re closing in on an NPC it’ll freaking book it and get to the mob long before you do.

Not to mention that when me and my friend (whose a thief with the stealth trait) CnDed me and i just targeted him and hit “sick’em” and the pet closed the gap, and knocked him to the floor before his stealth ended despite him running 50% faster than i can in the opposite direction (well 25% because i use SotH)

i may have to test this.
i don’t like sick’em in WvW because you can lose track of you target pretty fast, and therefore your pet as well negating the effect of the skill, i’d rather use SotW or SoS.

Actually once you hit Sick’em your pet is locked to your target (like a phantasm) until you give it a new command (F1-F4/ another shout), the timer runs out, or the target dies, if they stealth your pet will wait for them to reappear and continue the attack, clones generation I haven’t recently tested.

About the pet names, they said it takes up too much memory on their servers. They did that change some months ago.

Well that’s nonesense. 4 names per ranger, max 128 chars per name plus a 64bit pointer is 16.6tb… Assuming there are 32 million rangers.

Lol what? It already remembers the 4 “active” pets you have, it doesn’t remember all of the OTHER ones, which is what OP is complaining about.

The bug is where you can throw your pet up on a tower or off the wall to attack

But it is a bug and Anet said it will be removed at some point.

But it is fun to throw the panther up there with stealth and let him go to town.

Where did they say it was a bug?

@OP: I use it in sPvP for super stealth drake breathe assassinations, nothing says “SURPRISE!” Like 5 stacks of confusion and a kitten ton of damage from my beloved Bubbles who snuck up behind them to scream in their ear!

Try taking your ranger into 50-75 zones, you’ll see how bad the new downscaling setup is.

I don’t think the new downscaling system has been implemented has it? If so, i gotta say they REALLY need to work on how the pets downscale because those things still hit like freights at lower lvs (i have 30pts in BM), one thing my friend suggested for me to do (because i complain about the same thing as you xD) is to take a really poor damage pet, like a bear, or spider.

….that is a horrible idea, how about not putting 30 points in BM if you’re so concerned? your idea would make pets even worse without forcing points into BM. It’s bad enough that pets die so easily without wasting points in BM, you want to make that worse?

@Dahkeus great find!! And keep in mind that the salamander drake actually has THE HIGHEST breathe attack of all the drakes (unless the river drakes bounces between 2 targets, then i think he pulls ahead, or if the reef drake gets confusion up against some trigger happy people).

Could you test this with the Malicious and/or Condi Damage traits? I know the shark especially with those 2 traits makes his kill time almost 1/4 of what it is without them.

I agree, without it I die in a second. People think just because we can escape its OP. If a thief leaves then the other persons won, yeah tbey didnt get a kill but oh well.

There is nothing wrong with stealth, people just get angry cause thieves are escape artists.

I was fighting a tank war in WVW,, he had the best gear, and I didnt. I couldnt kill him, but I was able to escape. I came back to fight like 7 times but escaped everytime till my team came and killed him. He was sooo mad he couldnt get me, he came back to try to kill me like 3 times but couldnt because my team was there.

I dont understand why he would get soo mad, I didnt kill him, but he kept coming after me. Im pretty sure he would say stealth is OP even tho I couldnt kill him myself.

I’ve noticed people get really mad when they are unable to get ahold of a prof, like mesmers that are REALLY good at pretending to be a clone, and even slippery rangers/engis/eles that manage to disengage and come back and kitten with someone kitten people off. I personally don’t mind the whole thief thing, but then again i’ve gotten used to how thieves are, and only expect to kill the ones that get really overly committed to a fight.

Yeah thieves arent op, they just have the ability to choose thier battles.

lol i don’t have issues with shatter mesmers, it might be because i’ve played a mes for a while so i learned that rolling into the clone rush wastes their shatter. And seeing as how Anet said they wanted thieves to be able to pick and choose their battles (due to them being super squishy) it makes sense to me that stealth works the way it does.

Actually, cats do love water. Not all cats, but wild cats love water. That aside (because it still looks kinda dumb) I got around it in my head as a roleplayer by seeing my pet as an imortal shape changing nature spirit.

Who’s idiotic enough to stand still when stealthed anyways? Besides; the current stealth mechanics gets Thieves to be forgiven of ALOT of mistakes they could make.

Um, I use this amazing thing called immobilize so they don’t get to move… And when I don’t I just run around swinging my melee weapon, because the attack animation will chain every time you hit them…

Only if thieves knew they can switch to thier bow and use infiltrators arrow to escape lol.

lol i’ve noticed a lot of thieves are too stubborn to do that and instead feel like it’s a better idea to stick with their daggers so they can get their back stab in.

Underwater Bears and Felines - feels wrong

Well with the suspension of belief I give to the game (fireballs anyone?) they really don’t bother me. I like being able to bring my cats underwater, even if my main water pets are reef drake (feedback OP) and salamander drake.

It’s an easily fixable solution, but if they did make cats and bears land only, a lot of rangers would be in for a rude awakening when they first do underwater combat (a lot of people’s first aquatic pet isn’t tamed until after hitting 30).

What he said, most of the starter areas have you diving under water well before you find a dedicated aquatic pet. Rangers are kitten without them. It is annoying yes, the cats particularly I am sketch over, but they are definately necessary.

You can get both types of jellyfish and the armorfish from Rata Sum and Lion’s Arch immediately after leaving the tutorial.

Gs5 and signet of the hunt both apply the same boon (along with the attack of opportunity trait) so they don’t stack.

Oh, one thing i found out yesterday is that Axe 3 applies an “Expose Weakness” buff onto your pet that says it boosts the damage by 150% and adds weakness, this is NOT the same as SotH/GS buff, but knowing how accurate tool tips are in GW2, i’m willing to bet the 150% is just an artifact from an earlier time.

More Amulets?

Made a suggestion similar a while a go, pretty much ignored! I asked to bring back the old system where we had rings, necks, accesories, and so on, to balance our builds and make a better mixture of stats, not the current bs.

I’d also like this, make the Amulet be equivalent to having stats on all your armor, and then make the other ones total up to your accessories, to allow for a lot more varied builds, i know there were a few builds i wanted to do but just flat out can’t in sPvP because of the lack of required stats.

So the tooltip on signet of the hunt states that it passively gives 25% movement increase to you and your pet but after you equip it, by mousing over the boon above the utility bar it clearly states that the movement increase is 10%, while if you select the pet it doesn’t even specifies a percentage.

When i boon myself with swiftness i notice a major increase in speed, which leads me to believe that the actual speed is 10% while it would be awsome to have the 25% similiar to other professions.

Unless they nerfed thieves signets down to 25% and pretended to just buff ours, it’s making us run at 25%, and keep in mind, 8% movement speed is still a fairly good chunk in GW2, especially while out of combat.

Yes this exactly, jag + F2 + Sick’Em is the most damage you can do with s pet I believe because the 40% dmg is just universal damage (applies to cries and non cries)

25 stacks of might thrown onto that jag… mother of god…. what unholy carnage you’d cause in that short duration of god hood…

Hey, you rangers have

1) Loads of heal
2) 10 Sec AoE Condition remover (prots every second, rendering almost all condition users useless)
3) Loads of Regen

And these are just your healing spells. Whose ratio to the amount of healing is ridiculous?

Not to mention you guys have swords, daggers, shortbows which gives you extra dodge. (Making the dodge system a joke) + Using the correct utility spells you can get Vigor for 10+ secs giving you 100% endurance regen. Meaning you can dodge and heal at the same time.

I don’t see how a less than 2 second stun every 40 sec which deals “damage” is OP.
SO, what’s wrong with the GOLEM?

I’d like to point out that although we have most of those things,empathetic bond proud every 10s, you can’t have all that at the same time.

Lol what? Yes you can…. 30 in wilderness, clerics armor, LR, vigorous renewal + healing spring do you even play a ranger?

@OP I think this is a L2P problem… The golem is strong, but he gives up the strength of the other elite skills for a more active one… As in its just a strong utility skill (like elites were in GW1)

The way the skill works (same with guard, protect me and Search and Rescue) is your pet will gain the effects and be under the effect of the shout until it’s either given another command (hitting F1-F4, using another shout), the pet dies, or the shouts effect ends.

It’s working as intended, it doesn’t stop jag stealth because the F2 of the jag skill is just gaining stealth, the same reason it doesn’t end any of the condis or boons applied by other F2s.

The wiki is wrong btw, it applies Rejuvenation, the same thing guardians have from their F2, HOWEVER it scales off of YOUR PET, not from you, the healing your PET recieves scales off of you though. The trait is meant to keep your pet alive longer and then also give you a little boost to Health per Second.

That seems like it’s a bug then. If they both scaled off your healing, or both scaled off your pet’s healing, it’d make sense. It’d even make sense if your regen scaled off your healing, and the pet’s regen scaled off the pet’s healing. But it makes no sense for your regen to scale off the pet’s healing, while the pet’s regen scales off your healing.

What? It makes perfect sense for it to be this way -_-’ you are healing your pet and your pet is healing you, the trait is designed around KEEPING YOUR PET ALIVE and it’d be pretty brokenly OP if they both used the rangers and pretty horrible if they both used the pets…

I think it would be incredibly complex path finding to calculate your pet leaping off walls. Not to mention that you’d have to start calculating falling damage on pets too.

Well my pets have taken falling damage before… and died from it because my 50% fall damage trait doesn’t seem to help them out at all xD, so i don’t see how it’d be -that- hard. but then again, i’m no programmer.

How can your pet take falling damage? That’s like a mob taking falling damage, I may be mistaken but I’ve never seen that before.

Well I do a ton of Jumping Puzzles, and jump off of everything (which is why I have the Fallin trait xD) and I can say my pet takes falling damage about 3 times a week… It’s normally on ramps where he sorta “falls” multiple times down the ramp instead of walking normally and he takes damage after each “fall”

That being said I hope mobs will be able to be launched off cliffs to their death… I really liked that in SWTOR (and that’s where the pros ended for me)

Yo OP, stop being ignorant!! Stealth IS NOT THE SAME as it is in other MMOs, you stealth a thief and quickly drop an immob and burst on where they were they’ll die, I know, I’ve done it a multitude of times, the only thing stealth PREVENTS is 1) you being able to see them, and 2) moves that require a target (you know, all 6 of them).

On my engi I personally just use an AoE launch, like shield #4 or blowing up a turret so the thieves/mesmers stealth entirely goes to waste due to them cartwheeling through the air…

L2P, stop kittening about stealth, and that boon would make stealth STRONGER than it currently is -_-’

Your screenshots show damage that occurred in the same minute, not the same second. It also shows 3 Grenade Barrages. A single Engi can only do 2 at a time.

Nope, an engi can do 3, Fall damage trait = Grenade Barrage, Tool Belt = Grenade Barrage, Equipping Nade kit = Grenade Barrage.

@OP are you a guardian by any chance? If so if you’re using a full on toughness build that’d be why you just died, otherwise you did -something- wrong because i’ve eaten the whole 3 nade combo thats become popular on Khylo on my server and managed to break away with 2k health while standing at ~3k armor and ~16k health.

I personally think that Canines should be underwater pets.. i mean for kittens sake they can actually -use- skills if they get under water (send them after an underwater enemy they’ll jump in and start dealing damage) not to mention there are several clearly ranger NPCs with Fern/Drake Hounds underwater, and unlike when moas glitch underwater and just run and stare at the enemy because they have 0 moves, the canines still attack, and have F2s… i mean… really anet? Cats are underwater pets but not Canines? shakes head

And i personally think that any animal other than the aquatic animals and Drakes and Devourers just seem out of place underwater due to the obvious reasons, but it’d totally suck if you couldn’t bring those other pets underwater, thus gimping yourself for quite some time in the game unless you are a GW1 veteran.

Now, lets make this thread a petition for Hermit Crab, Sea Scorpion, Dolphin, and Barracuda pets to replace bears/cats as underwater pets!!

Rangers in AC: Obstructed Graveling Burrows?

I’m just going to let you know that a lot of “Objects” (like burrows trebs etc) have really really bad auto targeting options, but once you turn off the auto target and just shoot at the burrow it hits.

IE: You aim the arrows yourself towards the burrows it’ll hit, but if you target the burrow and shoot it wont hit.

It’s annoying, but it’s a way around the problem.

I’ve noticed that you need to have compassion training on BEFORE you equip the Natural Healing trait other wise it wont work, your pet also needs to be incombat (attacking something) for it to trigger the healing power boost.

The wiki is wrong btw, it applies Rejuvenation, the same thing guardians have from their F2, HOWEVER it scales off of YOUR PET, not from you, the healing your PET recieves scales off of you though. The trait is meant to keep your pet alive longer and then also give you a little boost to Health per Second.

It’s an amazing trait, same with Instinctual Bond (i still think it was over nerfed), both have saved my kitten more times than i can count.

How about 30/30/5/0/5? I feel that I need the stats from Marks/Skirmishing and more endurance from WildSurvival and 2s quickness from Beastmastery. Or then 20/30/5/0/15. I would take 10% crit dmg over 100power (so not 30/20/…). This would buff the pet quite a bit and give more often quickness.
Main weapon Sb, ofcourse, secondary sword/horn.
Are these “viable” glasscannon specs?

Oh and nobody has said anything about which pet to take. Cats/birds… I believe in Jaguar. With RaO, Sick ’Em and QZ, while the Jaguar is stealthed and critting is amazing.

If you’re going for total glass i’d take 2 cats and take RaO, Sick’Em, QZ and SotH/Muddy Terrain (roots them so they stay nice and still like for your kitty to eat them). If you want more -burst- then go with 2 birds, cats have a lot better sustained damage than birds, but bird burst trumps everything but a drake breathe attack, but those things are so easy to get out of they may as well not count!

PS: If you are doing WvW and want some heavy AoE drakes can do that better than the other pets, but i’m assuming you want single target nuking so you’d want a bird/cat. In WvW Guard should be taken over SotH and Muddy Terrain while defending/attacking a keep because it allows your pet to get into/out of the keep and into the fray.

For the love of god just make the pet system like it was in GW1 where your pet “evolves” as you level him up (like they originally wanted it to be in GW2) where regardless of your pet it can fulfill any role if you evolve it properly.

EX: You evolve your moa into a dire moa, it’s now on par with jaguars (as they are now) for damage. You evolve your jaguar into a Hearty Jaguar and now it’s on par with bears for a tank. Then you’d also have Aggressive for slight damage orientation, Playful for slight tank orientation (wolf and boar would fit those respectively), and then Elder for a nice even pet orientation (like the moa/jellyfish are now)

There are multiple ways they could take the current system, and make it far better then it currently is.

linking our stats though with our pet would be a bad idea though.

But like i said, the pet system in general in this game needs a massive redesign.

It wouldn’t link with our stats, i think that’s an awful idea, as much as i’d love my dire black moa again, i sure as hell don’t want to build as a freaking glass cannon in order to make my moa deal damage, i like being tanky tyvm.

Yea, agreed with that Xsorus, although we do technically have this…

I mean look at the Hyena. It has about half the power of all the other canine pets, rofl!

They nerfed that poor Hyena in beta, I mean I understand why, There was zero reason to bring the other dogs really and some other animals when the Hyena summoned itself and did more CC as well.

But yes, the current Hyena would be a prime example of a CC type pet that could use more CC abilities (Bite allies Cripple for example)

After they went through and redesigned every pet, they could redesign some of the crappier pet specific talents.

I think the hyena would be in good shape if the summoned hyena scaled off of the Hyenas stats again… now he just summons a 0 BM hyena who gets 0 benefit from any traits you have =(.

I’ve found that going 30 in either skirmishing or marksman (your choice) and 20 in the other one and 20 in BM results with MUCH better damage than 30/30/10/0/0

Engineer traits: why are they handicapped?

Because the ranger, unlike the engineer, is supposed to share in the extremely high amount of evasion that is the thief, the engineer, unlike both the ranger AND the thief, does not evade attacks but simply shrugs them off.

If you haven’t noticed we have 2 traits that’ll apply protections pretty liberally AND we can get perms vigor by either swapping kits, or just from critting, making us a LOT more evasive than a ranger could even dream of being if we have the tool tree maxed out as well, because, you know, we get 10% of our endurance bar back with each tool belt skill use.

Nah, flesh golem is a minion, minions and turrets and every other summon doesn’t go on CD until it die where it lasts a while, this is a kit so it should follow where other kits do, however I’d say maybe make the abilities themselves on the kit longer CD to compensate for this (IE our elite has “no CD” but due to the skills being stronger they have longer CDs)

I’ve said this many times in the past. Sniper Kit is not Engineer-y enough.

For god sakes, our HARPOON gun shoots TORPEDOES and MINES! Our Pistols shoot glue, and our Shields have electricity in them.

Yeah I get you there, which is why I tried to make my version more “Engineer-y”.

Fine, we will fire rabbits an other small animals with our 1 skill which, due to the weight I our ammo, would cause us to be more mid-long range, and just think of how awesome it’d be to fire a small, angry animal at your enemies from long range, and after the initial hit the small animal begins to attack them?

Our #3 skill could be called “Explosive” rounds, and the next 10 animals fired from our gun will be strapped with explosives an upon triggering the skill again they’d all blow up launching and inflicting vulnerability to everyone hit.

The #2 skill we’d fire a watermelon or “critter food” at the target causing all the fluffy animals we’ve fired from our gun to swarm onto that target wanting blood, and as such they’d cause bleeding on each of their attacks until the critter food wears off.

The #4 skill would be the gillie suit and the #5 would be the reflect.
EDIT: for obvious reasons all the animals fired have experimental rabies from animal testing and would randomly inflict chill, weakness, poison, and confusion, there’d be a max of 10 if them walking around and they’d die in 2 hits (ie each time they take damage it deals 50% of their health)

@rest of people,
I really like the Deployable wall and the experimental shot idea that’d be fun! And I assumed it would be an elite kit too, so they’d certainly be stronger skills than usual, but not as strong as other elites (kinda like how flesh golem works).

I really liked the experimental shot ability as well, I wish there were more abilities like this in game.

Its funny that you mention the elite thing because the 3 ability could be adjusted to compensate for the fact that it was an elite. So if we go off what the necromancer flesh golem having a 60 second cooldown, it would be fair to put the kit at a 60 second cooldown when stowed? So just get change the 8 seconds to just being stowed.

@ Entropy: I was also thinking what should the tool belt skill be if it was just a utility slot? I was thinking a sighting turret that applies vulnerability to your target as long as they are within range, say 1 stack for 2 seconds every second you have them targeted. Something like that. that way you could stack passive vulnerability on them and it could change targets to apply it elsewhere.

Then you could have Shield/Pistol to use blowtorch, but still have some defensive skills.
omg, it’s an engineer… is they a Pistol/Shield or Shield/Pistol?!

Also you could have Shield/Shield to be a legend on the battlefield.

I would LOVE to be shield/pistol…. That sounds glorious lol.

I really hope Engis get cross bow though tbh, then we could be like the turtle from Sly Cooper.

He’s the guy fixing the tanks, not the hero -_-.

You wish, engies are the commando guys running with shotguns, grenades and mines and flamethrowers

Plus Iron Legion engineers were the ones who advanced technology enough to invent the rifles in tyria, it only makes sense that engineers would also be the ones to create sniper rifles

Actually sniper rifles are already in game, they’re an environmental weapon you can find in every ascalon zone (very small area in each one) that has ~8k range and applies 5 stacks of bleed, does a KB effect and a longish (3s?) CD, only one attack, cast is instant. The damage nearly one shots most mobs, including vets.

I’d say change #3 to “spot” and make it throw up a ton of vuln and cripple but deal very little-no actual damage.

I’d also say make headshot have a 100% crit chance and damage would interrupt it, but I’d have LONGER range than the 1 skill, that’s just me though.
