what if the guard has condition removal and/or teleport (JI/blinding blade)? you dont have to wait/destroy entangle to get out of it…
I’ve yet to encounter a single bunker guardian tat has a teleport tbh…
I prefer to just go with a drop a frost trap so he gets nice an chilled, knock him off the point and then barrage over him so he has to limp back.
I know my friends support ranger build used 2 spiders so the bunker can’t get back before he’s capped the point due to slow, stuns, and immobs.

The ranger trait ’Hunters Tactics" adds 10% damage to attacks from the side or behind targets.
The Superior Rune of the Thief adds 10% damage to attacks from the side or behind.
Do these stack, has anyone tried it?
Thanks,
I know the % damage increase from scholar runes and WS 25pt stack (% increase while over 90% health) so I’d imagine that it’d be the same for skirmish and thief runes.

If you’re playing sPvP with a glass canon longbow build you want to fulfill the role of ranged harasser, you run around the map harassing from as far away from the point as possible, call out targets to focus, and destroy from ranged. You can weaken bunkers with 0 threat to yourself, capture/steal secondaries, and scout.
It does NOT work well in PUGs but in a solid tPvP team with VOIP a longbow gc ranger is absolutely devastating, the ONLY map I felt like I would’ve been better in a different role was Forest, but even then sniping chieftain and Svanir and making their bunkers waste all their CDs to not die is always useful!
LB ranger in spvp is a liability. In order to maximize damage, I have to be away from the nodes I’m suppose to help cap and further lessen the damage even more by making the pet take a scenic route?
This is why spvp cap and hold is flawed and why I don’t play that mode. Even when I test builds in that mode I at least have the common courtesy to run SB to not be completely worthless to my team.
Um, you are helping, you’re spiking down high threat targets and if they want to kill you they have to leave the point, which no bunker will do, and no enemies will be willing to do in a 2v1 or a 2v2 leaving you to sit there at full health and endurance and reap the rewards of +20% damage increase because of it.
And if they -do- break off the point to get you, you’ll likely cap the point.
Incase you’re wondering, no, you won’t be in a 1v1 very often if at all because that’s not what a ranged harasser does, they’ll “1v1” a bunker or another point guard for a brief amount of time before the melee ranged capper shows up to finish of the bunker/point guard and take the point, but that’s about it.
Interesting theory, except spvp is basically full of dd ellies, thieves and mesmers, all of which have better burst and mobility. A GC ranger will fold faster than a cheap chinese lawn chair. And LB with no full marksmanship and skirmish is pointless. If people can’t kite in an open wvw map, there’s no way to keep the distance in an spvp one. They don’t even need to chase you, someone who’s capped another point and on his way to another node will run into you and make you feed his team.
Maybe you should try it out in tPvP before trying to poke holes into it? D/D eles and mesmers are hardly more mobile than me, thieves are the only thing that can close a 2k range gap at a reasonable speed, and even then it requires them to use a few utility skills or burn a bit of initiative to do so.
As for LB rangers that aren’t gc being worthless, you clearly don’t know what you’re talking about, LB is one of our best support weapons with the short CD KB, vuln, and AoE cripple.
PS: it’s not some “theory” it’s how the build works, I’ve used it in a LOT of tPvP games lately, the only one ive lost was against a freaking premade of shark ranks, that was an absolute blood bath.
EDIT: the best way to think of GC longbow ranger is as an AD carry, if you’re left alone you can wreck constantly because almost all your damage comes from your auto attack (you have some burst on short CD but your auto is your main damage) however you will go down faster than a snowflake in a blast furnace if you get caught out of position which is why you need to rely on mobility, immobs and evades to escape if they start to focus you an only come back if your team calls for you/you see a few quick kills you can deal.

50% increased damage on one attack is nothing to get excited about, it’s basically weaker than a single crit. Active effects for the majority of ranger signets are really poor.
Um, no? 50% increased damage is a crit (with 0 crit dmg) that can then crit… it’s something that you could get very excited about, not to mention that it’s pretty much the only signet we have that has an even remotely reasonable CD>
I must be slow to excite, +50% to ONE attack is really weak for a signet active, in my book. The fact you need a 30 point grandmaster to get it at all is just comical. I pop blind and leech on the equivalent signet on my other toons, but it doesn’t seem worth it on ranger.
I pop my sig of the hunt A LOT and I don’t have 30pts in Marks, I’d suggest you look at how hard some of the pet attacks hit, like blinding slash, or the cat pounces and pop it as they are going in to use the skill, it’s pretty devastating seeing as how our pets can hit harder than we do per attack.

Now you might say, “Well just give me some buffs for when the pet’s stowed to make up the difference”. At this point there’s no reason to ever take the pet out, and what’s worse is that you’re now playing a class that has nothing to set it apart from any other. Bows are not Ranger-exclusive (Warrior, Thief), nor are Traps (Thief), nor are pretty light clothing.
Precisely the point of this entire post. A stowed pet would no longer be granting the ranger anything at all. All former base stat consolidation between ranger and pet would be no more, and everything originally shared with the pet would be returned to the ranger themselves. We’re wanting the ability to go completely petless if we so desire. And for rangers then being outclassed in every conceivable way by every other prof, separate topic entirely, and we’re working on that one too.
As for other profs using bows. True, but I’m sorry, we do it better. Thieves especially, while having pretty and overall very flashy arching shortbow skills, are not terribly useful with them unless perched somewhere firing down on an opponent or being used to run away quickly (all they’re really used for in WvW). Since all other thief shortbow skills are easily sidestep-able.
We -aren’t- outclass -you- and all the other rangers that don’t know how to manage their pets are being outclassed.
And you want the pet to give you the stats you share with it back? Fine, that’d be the equivalent of how you are now since we don’t share a single thing with our pet atm, the pet has its own stats entirely.
PS: I don’t think you’ve actually used or fought against a good shortbow thief if you think all their skills are easily sidestep able and/or useless
LOL, I would love to see a video of a “pro” ranger using his pet in a high lvl fractal.
Please link one since theres sooo many that have no problems whatsoever with the pet.
Better yet why dont you post one for us so we can see how a pet is supposed to be managed in a fractal.
Thankyou in advanceP.S. The pets are garbage in this game and giving some the option of having one or not needs to be done.
Um, really? Fractals? -that’s- what you’re complaining about? The only reason our pets are issues in high fractals is from them having 0 agony resist, take off your ascended armor and tell me how well you’d last there, what? The same duration? Imagine that….
Once they fix pets so they gain their masters Agony Resistance they won’t be an issue there.

Just wanna let you know that frost armor, prot, and bark skin all stack, so you can get up to 73% dmg reduction… Oh so many angry thieves have hit me during that very short but godly period….
PS: GS 3 + Frost trap = frost aura.
EDIT: if you’re a bunker why use sick’em and QZ? Take frost trap and protect me + 2 moas or a bear + Moa instead, the goal of a bunker is to not die, not to kill things…
nice tip will definitely try out the frost armor..
i’ve since swapped out sick’em because its bugged, yes my main aim is to stay alive but i still like a lil bit of burst to help when needed
Sick’Em is actually only bugged if you use it BEFORE your pet begins attacking, so if you swap pets you gotta have your pet attack (attack doesn’t need to land) the target before using the shout.
when I tested on my birds it was wiping on the swiftness buff they do and that was the deal breaker for me.. I dont want a semi reliable skill.. I seem to getting comparable results from flame trap and I also get a nice fire aura from it too
Aaaah, I don’t use birds so it may just be that, I know it persists through my canines leap and Moas heal though, so there’s that (and bears defy pain when I used a bear in PvP for a build I was trying out)

If you want to e a “Mage” and use a lot of fire you could always roll a scepter/torch + staff guardian seeing as how you can build yourself to burn everything around you on your 4th hit AKA every auto attack against a group while using a staff, you may find it fitting… That or As everyone else said, juggernaut engi + flamethrower will be fitting.
And also as everyone else has said, eles -need- to swap attunements regardless of spec, you can’t just use one attunement.

Boon removal is a necros thing so I would against them giving it to all classes. Otherwise why bring a necro. Instead just buff the necros boon removal or better yet just nerf those builds which stack boons.
It’s also a Mesmer thing, just not as common to find a Mesmer that manipulates boons. That being said, I agree, boon removal/manipulation shouldn’t be something everyone can do, otherwise builds that utilize boons to be successful would just become worthless.

I’d like to see the #1 skill changed to a “charge” skill, IE you can spam it an get a bunch of really weak shots off (I mean REALLY weak as weak as shooting someone point blank ATM) but then make it have a few different power Lvs in charge each one upping the damage and the arrow speed, charging it all the way should take as long as it takes to fire a shot now, firing as fast as possible should take ~ .75s, I feel like this would make the longbow a lot stronger as a weapon and not completely bone us if we gut stuck in close quarters.

I think this is likely most frustrating for role-players, who (without reasonable, non-forced in-character reasons) view the activity as immersion breaking. Despite the fact that some will just laugh at anyone role-playing a character in a role-playing game………. I think the frustration is reasonable.
They can always choose another Daily task, but when the choice for a fifth boils down to ambient killer or something they personally loathe doing even more.. you have one of those “stuck between a rock and a hard place” situations, which no one enjoys.
That my friend is when you role a chaotic evil character who doesn’t even have a moral compass so you can complete it w/o issues!
Or you just do what I do and play an asura who believes everything other than him is inferior and as such is expendable… Mostly.

I’d say elementals are/can be stronger than gargoyles, tbh.
Yes, but for the most part the gargoyles tend to be stronger, they have mesmer and elemental magic, not to mention a few of them were able to repair themselves after dying.
And whose to say that the owner of the castle doesn’t also have extremely powerful elementals to defend himself and he’s just letting the weaker ones defend the town below?

You should totally be able to change stats on legendaries, or at least have a few different options to choose from like dungeon weapons.
I second thing, -personally- i love the p/v/t stat set-up, but i know that there are some others that’d much rather have Berserkers or Clerics, or Carrion etc, idk why they should be prevented from using a legendary because of stats.

They’re even hacking. I’ve met a lot of players who completely ignored daze/knockback/interrupt/block without stability and anything.
Traits have cooldown, so not traits.
Meanwhile there are people in WWW who just jump over the fort walls and solokilling the lord inside…
Um… no, rangers have sig of stone to invuln themselves, can stand behind their pet to avoid most interrupt effects, and i believe “Protect Me!” will mitigate a lot of CC, not to mention that the ranger may have been traited for Shared Anguish which would also make him immune to CC (pet takes the hit).
We have a lot of things to make us an absolute amazing stomper.

If that were so, then why would Isgarren use elementals for the village below?
Because gargoyles are stronger than elementals so he’s keeping them for his personal defense system? You kinda need those things with elder dragons and just owning that castle seems to create enemies…

For people saying “it wouldn’t work!” Sure it would! You just make the auto attack something like “Mighty Squeak!!” Deals x damage to enemies in melee range of you and grants might to the ranger, boom, problem solved.
For damage your pocket pet will just take a % of the rangers damage (let’s say when the rangers damaged 5% is transferred to the pocket pet) but have the pocket pets have some pretty low toughness/vitality.
I approve of this solution xD, especially if I get the option of having a parrot ride around on my shoulder… Or a ferret… That’d be amazing!

Since someone brought it up already, do you guys think a celestial amulet (outside of PvP) is a wise investment at all for someone who tends to change and try new ranger builds every so often?
If you change a lot celestial would totally be a good idea, will it be as awesome as another set? Probably not, but celestial gear works for literally all builds, it’s normally not the best option if you’re min/maxing but it’ll work.
hey where’s the screens of these 4k barrage hits?
Well i got distracted last night to begin with, but yeah i went to test it on the golems and it was 1.8k was the highest, so now i’m really curious where the 4k hits were coming from because it sure as hell wasn’t my moa, and my rapid fire would be a lot higher than that.
I’ll try it out on my glass canon friend, and see if that does something different, i remember them saying the golems are sturdier than most player builds.
i.e. got caught on a lie.
No, i remember seeing 4ks popping up in sPvP while i was using barrage and it was happening A LOT, maybe it was on frenzied warriors or something? If i were trying to lie my way out of it i would’ve just photo shopped some 4k crits from rapid fire into a picture i was doing barrage on the aoe golems.

I see people that don’t want it to change utilize a specific build which the current setup favors. However this is pushing the ranger into a certain role with no alternative playstyles. I thought every class should be viable for all playstyles…
You don’t need to be support…. I know my ranger build in sPvP is a glass canon, i -could- bring a jaguar and go for super 1337 DPS, or a bird, but i choose to take a moa instead because it’ll be able to be in the team fight constantly supporting my allies.
That’s -my- decision, i was running the jaguar but thought my group as a whole benefited more from a moa. If i wanted to be a super bunker i’d take a blue moa + a brown bear for prot + condi removal and 2 very very very sturdy pets with 30BM that i can throw infront of me to take a ton of blows for me.
Just because it’s popular to NOT use a pet that wont mimic your play style doesn’t mean you HAVE to do so. We have more options because we can choose to let our pet mimic us or compliment us.

I PvP mainly and I haven’t found any problems with the ranger in 1v1s, except thiefs of course. Yea, maybe I can’t use greatsword whirlwind and whip out 10k damage, but after playing for so long and understanding how every single class works, I find that the ranger can easily kill every class (except thief). I don’t get where all this negative talk about the ranger is coming from. If it’s about PvE, then I wouldn’t know cause I don’t do any dungeons.
Lol we can’t whirlwind for 10k but we sure as hell can rapid fire for +10k! Masters of the bow indeed!!
@Rest if people; I’m really dumbfounded that our class mechanic didn’t deal with our nature attunement (expertise) or preparations, because those were significantly more “ranger” in GW1 than pets, granted pets were a big thing, but it’s like MM for necros, not everyone used it, but kitten near every ranger had a ton of expertise and a prep or two!

On the subject of Fire Shield + Obsidian Flesh: You have to actually get hit by an attack and take damage to gain the might. So yeah, nope.
Obsidian Flesh works like Endure Pain, you are not “immune” you take “0” damage, it procs, i just did it in WvW a few days ago, that or there was someone following the downleveled ele into a zerg, which i don’t think happened.

i’ve tried, some builds look good on paper – but the mix of toughness and vitality can’t even come come close to the survivability of pure toughness jewels vs thieves.
Similarly the mixture of dmg types can’t compare to going full condition.
So with you’ll be less survivable and have less damage and less healing than simply going shaman or clerics amulet. If you can make it work, good luck to you.…
Nah wasn’t gonna try it, just wondered why there is so much celestial ascended and exotic gear about. Also got me thinking if there is some secret celestial build pwning everything

Disclaimer: Not intended as a hate or whine thread. Please review/comment objectively.
Am I alone in sometimes wishing pets could be “turned off” entirely? Seriously, in my opinion the pet should not make/break the profession. In the original Guild Wars it was often rare to even see a ranger with a pet outside of Jade Quarry PvP (even having a pet active took up one or more of your eight skill slots). We were trappers, interrupters, and professional aggro pullers/manipulators. In those things we had legitimate strategic purpose as a class. We had a solid range of diversity that I’d really like to see again.
When I see dev posts here in the ranger forums, most of what I see is “we’re aware pets need adjustments and this is where we’re focusing.” Why? I grieve because I love the profession, it easily being my favorite; and yet I can’t always find a group for dungeons and fractals outside of my guild. To make it worse, this is often for good reason, my pet. They run ahead and draw aggro if not properly watched and maintained. Mine is usually placed on docile the entire time unless on a boss where at least they can soak a few hits for me or someone else. Which comes to the second part, pet survivability. Most of them dying within a few hits in direct enemy agro. Amidst a slew of other noteworthy (mostly AI based) issues. I won’t even touch upon pets in PvP arenas like WvW, because doing so I believe will broaden the scope of the conversation beyond its necessary limits.
Again, I’m not trying to troll or toss another “oh woe is me” post here. I want legit opinions on this. Why is something that should at best be an add-on or perk completely defining the ranger class? Me, I’d be perfectly happy being able to stow the pet away if I so chose (outside of combat only of course, as the option should not be allowed during to prevent any sort of infight stat manipulation). In doing so getting all my own damage output returned to me directly instead of being consolidated between two entities, and maybe having something cool like one extra bar on my endurance for one extra dodge or something.
Thoughts?
I think the pet -should- be a defining role of the prof, HOWEVER, i don’t think you should be forced into having it out all the time, i think it should be a sort of come and go thing that you could trait into (or hell just have the option by default) to have out permanently, but not doing so wouldn’t punish you. Then again, never using your pet, EVER should kitten you and stop you from performing to your full potential but so should -always- using the pet.
I think the person who described it perfectly is Swagg on his post in Robs thread, i’m going to post Swaggs picture in my post it is -not- mine
EDIT: I have no idea why the picture is showing up so small when i try to upload it, if anyone else is having the issues just go to the link and look at Swaggs pic.

Since rangers are meant to be jack of all and master of none, is a celestial gear build viable? Is anyone running with this gear? Is there any point of it?
I’ve used the celestial jewel a few times just for trying to figure out what in the name of all that is kittens that things purpose is for, but it was only mildly successful.
IE: The build worked for pug stomping, but there’s no way it’d be competitive, the only advantage to it was no one knew what you were doing.

I used to use a Spirit Build in tPvP/sPvP, PvE, and WvW, it was highly effective in -most- situations, especially after the 25% health buff and the fact that someone told me that spirits buffs actually get thrown up every 3s, last 6s and has a 10s ICD on the buff proc. IE every 3 s the spirit throws up the “<insert spirit name>” buff on allies in the area and then for 6s you can proc the effect, it will prioritize people -not- under the ICD over people who currently are btw.
However, the build was boring, it’s too passive and it’s just not game altering at all other than the fact you don’t really use your utility skills, like ever. It’s more dull than a signet build… it was effective though, more so in tPvP and WvW than in the others (players aren’t programmed to AoE the 5-6 names running around together where NPCs are).
If you wanna try it i can give you the build, just keep in mind it’s a VERY passive build, and it gets boring pretty quickly… however you are really sturdy and provide a lot of meatshields/buffs for your allies.

With the raven and spider stat problems being brought up, and by the sounds of it, going to be address. I would like to ask if it was intentional to be able to use the HoM pets with there non HoM counterparts.
Like I’m able to have the black and pink moa ( same skills) on at the same time, but am not able to use 2 pink moas for the same purpose. Wouldn’t this create a level of unfairness for those who have it unlocked vs those who don’t. Not really sure if this would give an advantage or not, but something to consider.
That’s why in the location balance and fairness is most important, s/tPvP, you can use HotM pets without having earned them.

Hunter’s Shot can give pet perma swiftness… which can make a big difference in the amount of damage your pet lands on human foes.
Mind grabbing the steady longbow in mists and testing that on the running golem? I imagine you’ll still find that it isn’t a big improvement … especially if the golem had a 25% movement signet or swiftness their self.
funny how pets move faster than players….

I would use them more if you could switch back to your weapon skills, and back again to the conjured weapon.
Right now, the only use I give them is frost bow for AC and greatsword for getting away in WvW.
This here, they should function similar to banners where you can drop them and use an ability and pick it back up.
I would approve of this…

All these people saying LB is bad for a glass canon build… i don’t think you understand how the weapon works… When you’re at max range you don’t use anything but 3 and 1, because it just hits that freaking hard…

I’d use them more if swapping attunementa dropped them, because that normally throws a wrench in my gears…
PS: if you wanna go glass cannon going 30/30/10/0/0 + lightning hammer = 5k crits on final auto attack +3k crits off normal auto attacks post 2s stun + KB + Daze combo. Then it just gets ridiculous with grounded and bolt to the heart…

I tried condition failed miserably =/ d/d is the way till they do something to staff anyone with an eye can dodge mostly everything
That’s why you make them unable to dodge or you make them dodge into something worse.

I’d love to see a volcanic map where the 2 naturals have capture points that deal damage to anyone standing on them, and then the center point is in the Caldera of the Volcano and has a fissure through the middle of the point and is essentially floating over a thing of lava where there’s a lot of locations you can fall off.
Of course there’d be “Power Ups” on the battle field (quite a way from the actual points) that’d sort of negate these, 2 that make it so you don’t take damage on the capture points and then one on a long CD that gives you stability.
