Sun is bad for organized groups for one reason: burning stacks in duration. When the target is called to be focused the ENTIRE group affected by sun is adding only like 400dps and thats if ure full condi specced. This is pathetic. So sun doesnt scale in any way and is quite bad.

Sun scales off of the player who applies the burning not the ranger, it -can- be good, I kinda prefer the suggestion that it should give might as well as burn though, would make it a bit more useful.

Considering a Guardian can keep burning up permanently with minimal effort, and there is generally an Elementalist also adding burning in area effect, this is an overkill. The spirit is virtually worthless in any situation, but solo. And applaying burning by traps is far better in a solo situation.

Or, you know, a group situation where none of your friends play a guardian or ele…

Warthog and Siamoth … two pets I’d use all the time if they improved how forage works … they even have a knockdown on a 40sec cooldown just like my dogs … and a bleed … just their knockdown has a much longer cast time and shorter range (why?!)

Their KD is an AoE (hits up to 5 targets I believe), and is longer than the wolfs.

I haven’t used a pig in a while, so this is all stuff I learned via these forums.

The biggest issue was that gc thieves could unload 10-14k damage on you before rendering. Culling lasts 2.5 secs and the debuff 3 secs, giving you about half a sec to burst the thief down. It’s easy killing a gc in 2-3 secs if u have a daze. This is the major nerf, and the rest is just sugar on top.

I agree that culling being fixed will fix one issue.

I was simply disagreeing about it affecting how much time they spend actually stealthed since that is what affects how much they receive the healing that was being discussed.

Well seeing as how every thief I know is kitten they can’t just CnD back up to full health (use skill, wait for stealth to drop use it again) I’m guessing that, yes, they are going to be in stealth a lot less because every time stealth expires they’re forced to play with us for 3 seconds before vanishing again.

Granted they’re still gonna be stealthed a lot, just not as much, ESPECIALLY in WvW.

@Ryan, I personally like grabbing a warthog pet in WvW, and then using “Throw Gunk” (item it digs up) which is essentially a Chaos Storm on roids that can apply up to 18stacks of confusion if the RNG is in your favor, it’s amazing against WvW zergs because it has a pretty mild animation so no one really moves out of it.

Why they removed our ability to Rez our pets I will never know… I mean, c’mon, I know in GW1 there were some seriously pet hateful encounters (oh god you stupid dryders in UW…) but at least we could Rez our pet easily instead of getting the shaft, “oh well half your damage is going to be controlled by AI, and if it dies from the many 1 shot mechanics we added to force players to Rez each other…. Well sucks to be you gimpy!!”

Their justification was something like this: since the ranger can just rez the pet by swapping, a manual rez is a bad decision.

It’s actually in line with their philosophy: since the pet is always alive you don’t need to rez him often, BUT if you need a rez from time to time you can just swap.

Oh I was talking about the utility in Alpha on a 25s Cd, 2s Cast that removed all condis from pet and healed it to full health (Comfort Animal), I know when they first talked about it the CD was 60s then they reduced it, then they removed the ability, it upsets me.

@I can Outrun Arrows: yeah, you can and its pretty stupid lol, becomes really easy to do with Swiftness + Runes of Speed.

Sun and storm spirits are dreadful. The other two are pretty decent. If we got some minor tweaks with some serious aoe resistance on the spirits, we’d be in a good shape. It’s just astounding to me why utility changes are taking so long, because solution involves number tweaking and a bit of testing nothinf more.

And yes, spirits should follow by default. Grandmaster trait should make the boons last a little longer.

No, the spirits shouldn’t follow by default, that just gets them killed, however the movement trait should be A LOT lower in the tree than a grandmaster, or make the grandmaster so the spirits get rooted and super buffed, but movement is default, either would be fine with me.

As for Sun Spirit it’s actually one of our stronger ones, it gives that condi person in your group easy access to burning, I can’t even count how many condi necros, warriors (idk why he didn’t have a bow), and thieves that were overjoyed that they got access to that condi.

I mean just because rangers have easy access to it doesn’t mean everyone does, so it’s good in a lot of scenarios.

As for storm… Well, it’s good in the aspect that if you use a war horn your team gets perma swiftness so they can keep on things easier and get out of bad kitten easier… But yeah it’s a pretty kitten spirit.

Bear in mind how they defined our class:

1. the MASTERS of long range.

2. Pets are half your damage.

Many classes have way better skills and way better damage using bows then we do. ‘Rapid Fire’ is one of the longest channels in the game, easily dodged, and even your own pet can block it!

Pets are pretty useless unless the target stands still.

The devs have no clue how to fix this without making rangers OP, so they don’t.

Here’s a subtle hint devs: try taking a look at gw1 skills and put something in gw2 that looks and feels like a real ranger class- hell, even ‘avenge me’ when your pet dies would be a good start to cover that huge loss in damage we suffer due to pathetic mechanics when the pet wonders off or fails to return.

I don’t understand the point of your second suggestion. What problem are you trying to solve? There is already a limit on how far you can F1 your pet, and how far you can get from a pet in combat before it magically appears at your side.

It would break most uses of “Guard”, and the extended attack range of “Sic ’Em”. Would you also propose changing turrets to only attack what their owner is attacking? Necro minions? Other summons? Why?

Currently you can send a pet in to fight at over 3,000 range and the enemy will only attack the pet. If multiple players do this they can fight without any risk. I suggested this because of concerns that this tactic would trivialize content if pets received a survivability increase.

I can see how some things like guard could become useless in PvE if this was implemented though. Perhaps there is a better way of handling this.

2 25 MB bears, 2 Moas (with compassion training), and a jaguar are capable of ripping just about everything apart with no help from their masters other than a heal… It was fun, but I felt dirty doing it lol.

PS: this was in Honor of the Waves, and CM explos, it was hilarious, I use HaO for this and was supplying Beary Bearington the 25MB brown bear.

In order for me to start using spirits, they would need to be closer to what they were in Guild Wars. I’d like to see spirits that increase projectile speed and damage, increase condition damage by a percent, convert combo fields in the area to a different type, etc. Edge of extinction in a boss fight with lots of adds could be incredible. Effects simlar to Fertile Season and Predatory Season would have been pretty cool too. What we have now just doesn’t do much.

I loved spirits in GW1 because you could make a team built around them? For example, Equinox + Arcane Languor + Famine

Or Winter + Mantra of frost….

Honestly, with having to micromanage the pet to make it affective. Having another set of passives is pretty kitten handy.

I think it is designed to accompany the pet system. Signets and spirits + pets = Win. In theory

I run a full signet build and 30 BM I do pretty well in dungeons. Pet wolf even tanks bosses though you have to call him back when you know boss is about to do a big hit etc.

Passive play isn’t fun for a lot of people. Some people want to be involved and active they don’t want to have half of their utility skills be passive skills, that’s boring and doesn’t make for interesting play to a lot of people. If you want boring passive play roll a 5 signet warrior, there is a reason people dump that leveling spec as Soon as possible, even though it is effective. Honestly the pet doesn’t take a high caliber of micro managing. At the most it’s 4 extra buttons, swapping for buffs, and recalling them when they get into danger. That is not really a high enough level of micro managing to warrant making half of the ranger skills passive lazy skills. Engineers and eles would talk with you about managing multiple items and skill sets, and engineers have 0 signets, eles have signets, but I can’t count on 1 hand the amount of eles I see using them.

Passive skills can be ok if they are a small selection for players to choose from, but when you make that selection half of a players options that’s when it becomes a problem, and extremely limited. This is why half of the rangers on the forum hate their utilities skills. You could slap on a brown bear and all signets/spirits (no kitten difference) and shortbow 1 things to death. Doesn’t mean it’s fun engaging gameplay that is good for the class or game.

Not an attack on you KensaiZen just saying in general.

Well spirits and signets will never be “active” play, spirits weren’t in GW1 doubt they ever will in GW2 (then again preps were on rangers but now they’re on the sin remake).

That being said I feel like if our signets could be used and enjoyed more by people who prefer active builds, and then I personally think spirits should be more like the rest of the summon able pets (exception of eles elementals because that’s more of a pick the tool for the job) where you’re supposed to use the active for defense/offense and then the passive play for offense/defense (obviously in the case f spirits their active should be more control oriented due to Passover being support oriented).

It doesn’t look like we will be getting a buff on spirits or utilities in the next patch. They talked about it in much less specific terms than the GS. I think we’ll get the GS this patch. I don’t think they will change the LB specifically, and we might get some improvements to defensive utilities.

Spirit of Stone could be seen as a defensive Utility….

Sorry I’m an optimist, I really wanna see my spirits shown some love xD.

Assuming you mean the Champion Risen Megalodon, no, not even close to possible. That thing’s damage is way too high, and shreds armor fish and devourer, let alone drake. The one in the straits of devastation is just as bad.

Unless you’re a condi short bow which would really like that poison, and if you build your pet for condi damage getting #4 off as much as possible would be amazing.

I do not believe Moment of Clarity works on stuns/dazed from the pet, but I know their duration is increased by it (or it was when this was originally added, I don’t tend to play with much in skirmishing) as for interrupts, we have 3 on ourself, an ele has… Well a lot less than we do with most weapon sets.

Instinctual Bond, this WAS, I repeat WAS a really good trait,
Pet gets ~15s of quickness when you get downed with a 5s CD? Omg yes, why would I not want you amazing quickness trait that allowed me to win oh so many fights? But now the quickness is kittening 5s okitten0s CD? I mean c’mon ANET, you say you dislike whackamole balance, why are you balancing rangers that way?

Spirits unbound + Double Health = very good spirits in tPvP, in PvE and pretty much everywhere else taking this trait makes me want to cry because it just leads to their death… PS: regen will heal your spirits.

Sig of BM is fine, granted our sigs need some love…

I agree with rangers need more attention. I always get teased because i play and enjoy my ranger. would be nice if people would welcome rangers into wvw, dungeons, etc.

I’ve never had issues, I’ve had a few “omg your pets still alive?!?” Responses in a handful of dungeons… But It’s usually in fights that its not even hard to do… Like the ice dog giant things in the Kodan instance path 2

ok a day after the state of the game video… i posted eariler… come on… they talked less than 2 minutes about rangers and they said the obvious. pets need Agoney Resistance and the long bow needs some defense.

i love this game. its a great game, my favorite mmorpg.

the reason we are all grumpy is that we really like being rangers… running around with a bow and your trusty pet. we like the idea but the reality doesnt match the concept.

“lets go visit the wizards castle…. oh no, ettins are attacking. Fluffy watch out… they will rearback and smash things with their clubs. …. wow.. Fluffy you got hit with that? You are really stupid. "

so… the next “state of the game” they should just come out and say what is wrong with rangers.
they can not deny that they pretty much skipped over rangers. they talked about them for less than 2 minutes. there is video proof.

the silver lining is maybe Maybe that they have “so many notes” that they can not discuss them all, or the changes will lead to so many follow up questions that it would take the PvP focused interview off track. why did gw2guru have 2 pvp guys? no WvW or PvE? not the most balanced interview.

i really want to find the silver lineing really really want to be complaining that pets are op and other players complaining about how rangers are too powerful.

if thiefs are too be the slipperiest profession. than rangers should be the most versitile. traites should allow for the most types of builds.

they admitted that the builds for many professions are not so varied. if they really go with what they said…. improve the rarely used traits and weapons then we might get a better balance. and rangers will be happy.

  1. silver lining is when they mentioned rangers he said “notes everywhere!” So I’m hoping he got overwhelmed with the shear amount of buffs/changes to be able to answer properly.

As for the pets, it’s no secret that they’ve been working on pet AI (improving it) since Beta, and my god has it improved, it certainly needs love still, but I feel once they get that very complicated task done we will be in a VERY good spot.

I don’t think our weapons are that much of an issue. The longbow needs some buffing, but I feel our other weapons are in a good spot.

The core problem -including our lower weapon damage- is our class mechanic being a poorly scripted AI which we have minimal control over. All of our weapons are balanced around the fact that we always have a pet tagging along to deal damage for us. Sticking us with a permanent AI companion that cannot defend itself against GW2’s dodge or die mechanics was simply a poor design decision. Why the developers are so fervently adhering to this flawed mechanic is a mystery to pretty much everyone.

The developers seem content to integrate as much of the ranger’s utility into the pet as possible. Two of our four condition removals are reliant on our pets being alive, and near enough to us to take the conditions in the first place. One of those four condition removals is a pet skill. All of our shouts only do things for our pets. All of our signet active abilities only affect our pets unless we take a grandmaster trait.

The ranger’s core mechanic should have been something radically different. Preparations, stances, spirits, traps…anything but permanent pets. I was actually thinking about stances the other day. Activating a stance would grant different abilities, perhaps boosted stats, or added effects to weapon skills. The ranger would remain in his current stance until he either changed stances, or was knocked down/launched/stunned. Changing a stance or getting hit by one of the aforementioned control skills would cause the current stance to go on cooldown. Personally, I would be much happier with my ranger if my pet and I weren’t attached at the hip. And this is coming from someone who normally gravitates to pet classes in other MMOs.

To be honest, even with the pet at full uptime, because it cannot scale with gear and at most gets 30% crit bonus damage with a trait, the pet does not compensate for the amount of damage split from the ranger’s weapons.

2.3k power and 110% crit damage bonus on a class which benefits 100% from that will always be greater than a class that benefits only 40-50% of that and the other half only gets 30% and less power bonuses.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner!! I wish our pets got a fraction of our stats ontop of what they already have… Maybe we/they would be better off then?

No, the “fix” (stupid change I despise) prevents you from putting your pet on anything you’d need to jump up onto/off of. The Harpy Fractals lightning part is a ramp you simply walk onto.

Granted your pet is useless on the platform section, unless you’re standing on the platform with the harpies which is practically a death sentence because they’ll throw you off.

Oh, he meant the lightning stairs.
I don’t see the problem here, just stow your pet (it will come back out if you get hit, but if you get hit its too late anyway).

What I was refering to was the steps with the harpies.
I used to slot Guard on that section so I could send my pet on the platforms with harpies, not sure if it works after the last patch though.

Yeah I did the same as you, now Guard is literally a worthless skill, your pet can no longer get to an area using guard unless it can run there.

Did anyone actually listen to the video? Or did everyone just go “AAH” after they said buff and longbow in the same sentence? They said they felt longbow damage was fine, and want to buff survivabilty.

I doubt anything more.

Evasive purity is befuddling to me. I feel like an auto-attack is generally a cheaper investment to remove a blind than a dodge roll. I can see the appeal of removing poison, but removing just poison?

It’s not a terrible idea, (though still weak for a Grandmaster) but it seems kind of limited in scope since it relies on your opponent using poison in the first place.

Signet of the Beastmaster as it is a grandmaster trait that basically has a shared game mechanic work the same for Ranger as it does for the other profession that possess the skill type (read all but Engineer)

My issue with this is: different classes, different signets, and some of the Ranger signets have really strong active effects.

I mean, stability for 6 seconds, invulnerability for 6 seconds… I’d praise signet of the hunt’s 50% bonus damage (Remember the thief’s old signet of the assassin?) if the ranger had better access to spike damage skills.

signet of stone doesn’t give you invulnerability, it only mitigates direct damage, condition dmg classes probably won’t even notice you used it, as conditions are applied and dmg as normal.

True, but that’s what sig of renewal is for! Which according to people on the forum first pulls all condis to you, an then almost instantly all go to your pet.

@Nemisis, actually my main is up in the air ATM and is in a struggle between a turret engi, staff/glyph ele, scepter/torch + staff mes, and a rifle warrior (stopped playing because it was boring). I’ve played my fair share as a GS mes because that’s what all my friends said I’d like because I like the longbow on the ranger.

It really isn’t that great, sure, you can deal a TON of damage if your opponent is a complete idiot and doesn’t know how to avoid a shatter or kill/dodge ibersweker, but if you play against a player who actually knows how to fight a Mesmer you’re borderline useless.

@LB auto doesn’t hit well from range, turn off the auto attack and start shooting as they change directions to strafe, boom, you’ll hit em just about every time.

I never said anything about moving the trap traits either, I simply want them to move quick draw in the first tier of the skirmishing tree.

No weapon mastery trait for ranger is out of the second tree, and I don’t think any prof has one in the first tier, why would bows be any different? It’s FAR too strong to be a minor.

Necromancer’s and Engineers would say otherwise.

The phantasm doesn’t need to stay up, troll. It hits in 0.25 seconds for what it would take the pet 5 autoattacks and lucky crits to do, and the whole point is you summon the phantasm and shatter him with the clones.

But by all means show those lv48+ fractal videos where your pet doesn’t die. My guess is that it will be as real as the 4k rapid fire hits you claimed in a previous thread.

Um, why would i be doing lv 48+ fractals? I’m not some sort of Massochist, everyone knows once you get past lv 30 in fractals it no longer becomes a friendly place for builds and everyone needs a specific build in order to perform at all. I’m talking about in tPvP, Explo Dungeons, and you know, everything where you actually have -some- build variation.

By the way, If you haven’t noticed, pets kind of have this thing called 0 AR, so they’d get completely obliterated at lv 48 fractals regardless of how amazing you are at micro.

PS: I’ve never said anything about rapid fire hitting for 4k per hit, that’d be amazing, OP but amazing, i’ve always said my rapid fires hit for over 10k or over 10k in my GC build (granted over 10k takes a bit of luck from crits and/or other factors like might, blood lust stacks etc).

Other than that, the mesmer’s greatsword autoattack is just as bad. It’s equally ranged cap, and it’s a long channel relative to other autoattacks like thief shortbow or warrior rifle.

The ranger longbow simply put has no attack that in the same short time windows of the warrior and mesmer does the kind of damage that a phantasmal berserker or Kill Shot does.

Rapid Fire is BAD. It’s bad damage for such a long channel.

Rapid fire can deal over 10k damage… So idk what you’re talking about with bad damage seeing as how you can pump that out from 2k range…

Then longbow #1 can crit for up to ~3.5k dmg, again from 2k distance, it’s a STRONG weapon, it just lacks in ways to reopen the gap/keep the gap open, sure there’s KB shot, but by the time you can use that it’s already lost a ton of damage from the range being closed…

10k damage in how many seconds? In Berserker gear as well, because in knight gear with 2.1k power it hits 6-7k at best.

And the pet isn’t obvious? Keep talking. The difference is that the pet is gone for 45 seconds in wvw and dungeons whereas the phantasm will be up in a third of that.

Learn to Micro? I have 0 issue keeping my pets up in dungeons, WvW i don’t do much there, but when i do fight there i just keep my pet back until the zergs clash and then i throw him into the fray, normally after who ever my target is and then once they die/retreat i call my pet back, let him heal up and search out a new victim.

And the pet is clearly obvious, but you want to know some MAJOR differences between pets and phantasms? 1) Pets don’t die as easily as a Phantasm 2) Pets attack more than once ~5s, a LOT more than once ~5s. So you know what happens when an enemy is stupid and tries to dodge every pet attack and/or focus on the pet? They die, end of story, unless they burst down the pet they’re just wasting time fighting the wrong thing. And if they -do- burst down the pet and you’re running a GC build it means that you get to kill them in most scenarios because you can burst them while they attack your pet, and then when they can burst again you can too and then they die.

If i’m fighting a mesmer all i need to do to kill their phantasm (unless they’re one of those really rare toughness mesmers) is shoot it with 2 autos, and i can certainly dodge their blatantly obvious attack ever ~5s.

PS: You phantasm isn’t up 30% of the fight, your phantasm will be up for MAYBE 1% of the fight, die, and then you summon a new one, the pet can stay in the entire fight if you’re a total beast at micro even with 0 BM.

We’re one of the best, if not the best 1v1 class in the game, there is no class outside of a decent confusion Mez and a P/D thief that could bother me.

Just what is it that you think a rifle warrior can do to a Ranger? It’s comical to even suggest one could beat me. It’s a free kill. The only way it would happen is if one caught me dealing with another player which was already made clear isn’t what was stated.

Then please start a thread to ask Anet to boost Warrior some more because according to you they seem to need it.

This L2P tone coming from people is getting very old and boring. Doubly so, when even the devs have just said the LB is crap and needs to be boosted.

Just because there’s a red bar on the skill doesn’t mean you won’t still hit the target, it just prevents auto attack from going.

I know that the red bar dosent mean jack, I am quite familiar with anets crappy programing I do play a ranger after all.

@Pedra never miss? No, I’m bound to miss a few shots especially against someone with easy access to swiftness (changing movement speed makes auto aim account for them to be further before swapping). If they’re running at average speed though than ill hit them most the time.

As for the Harpy Fractal I always quickly equip guard and have my pet stand at the bottom of the stairs so I can get up without him, I found that stowing your pet also works for this if you’re beastly enough to not get hit.

I havn’t played fractals in a while on my ranger, but didn’t the last patch “fix” Guard to not work this way anymore?

No, the “fix” (stupid change I despise) prevents you from putting your pet on anything you’d need to jump up onto/off of. The Harpy Fractals lightning part is a ramp you simply walk onto.

Granted your pet is useless on the platform section, unless you’re standing on the platform with the harpies which is practically a death sentence because they’ll throw you off.

You can’t move side to side… I had soooooooo many bunkers/other rangers try this in tPvP as I was harassing from 2k (out of short bow range) and the just kept eating my arrows, that bug was fixed a while ago!

Lick wounds works 100% of the time until you die on a slope (needs fixing)

Can’t perma stow cause we are THE PET PROF anet doesn’t want us to perma stow they’ve said so A LOT now.

Not just side to side strafing. Even when someone is running horizontally across from the archer’s view, your arrows will miss by a mile.

Yeah, people asked many times to move the trap traits to wilderness survival tree, but I think at this point of the game changes in the traits of this magnitude is impossible.

Many also think it is weird that many good traits for pets aren’t in the BM trait, like the cause 30% more damage on crit in skirmish, 30% pet move speed also in skirmish among others.

Don’t you dare put those in the BM trait it’d ruin my BM build where I take all of them!

@OP simple, don’t use a bow, go 20 into WS and get martial mastery, problem solved.

If you don’t like that solution, well tough, we can’t do anything about it and Anet CLEARLY likes where the trap traits are seeing as how countless people petitioned it, and simply swapping some traits around cant be -that- difficult seeing as how they did it like 6 times in the beta (yay hyperboles!).

I don’t know if this has been said before, if so ignore it, but today once more the pet problem has shown itself quite clearly. Pets become a burden to me and the whole party instead of being something useful, I was even asked to pt pet away because it was acting so annoying (which unfortunately I could not). The problem is pet vs jade maw. The jade maw targets dead pets, making the fight a lot longer and making it extremely annoying to the point where they wanted me to put it away, this should really be fixed. Also in the harpy fractal with the towers, if your pets gets caught by one of the attacks you get pushed down, which is also extremely annoying, of course you can hide your pet, but only when out of attack mode, which is another problem pets tend to bug this so even though you are out of a fight and so is the pet, you do not leave attack mode. Things like these should not happen, a pet should be an asset not a burden.

Pets just behave extremely bad in dungeons which is really starting to annoy the heck out of me.

Robert Hrouda said the jade maw should NOT target dead pets, that’s a bug.

I have always seen the ranger as the off-tank. Especially in GW2 since we have the pet, it makes even more sense. The ranger should be the one to help with crowd control, so when two mobs get pulled instead of just one, then the ranger should stick his pet on the second one to off-tank that mob until the group is done with the first one. That’s always the way I’ve used my ranger, since my day’s playing ranger in EQ1 till today.

I’ve done this a lot, me and my pet will lure the mob away from the group because I’m pretty sturdy while not giving up much offense, and then my fern hound/ Moa/ Bear are all excellent tankers and don’t do that bad of damage, especially at 25 masters bond.

Is it only me or the bow skill 1 of the warrior should have been something that the ranger had. Firing 2 arrows at the rate the longbow fires would do it just fine,

Seeing as how it was a ranger skill in GW1 (like just about every warrior bow skill) yes, I was hoping it’d get to use it in GW2, but nope, give warriors our multi target and burning skills and give thief our preps… Thanks anet!

10k with rapid fire ? maybe to some mobs or www players which are afk and 60 levels below you and you have to be GC ..because then they will evade most of hits just sidewalk or running ..they dont even have to dodge and if you are cursed enough you get obstructed by simple air or dead body on ground in front of your target ..
well and trait which should criple targets with hp below 25% simply don’t cripple with LB or cripple is so short that target will not even slow down..

No, it’s called I can easily throw 20 stacks of vuln on them and then blow them up… Or if I have 10 vuln + fury, god forbid I start off a fight with fury and 20 vuln….
