19 days since HoT has been released. I keep asking this and nobody has an answer.
What MMO expansion or otherwise, been released and within a month of release ALL the issues the player base complains about have been researched, coded, tested successfully the first time and released in this very short time frame?
19 days.

I understand the complaints – I think the expectation of immediate fix is amazingly unreasonable.

I’m not talking about bug fixes or balancing. I mean having a clear vision of goals and somewhat of a pathway for the future of their game. Changing me hanics and systems so often shows they lack this ability. WvW being literally dead is one of them, literally everything with fractals right now is another, very short personal story for HoT is another, deciding for the players that we don’t really run dungeons for fun is another, removing SAB too.

Let’s also remember this game is 3 years old it is far from new. They have had plenty of time to figure things out.

I’ve noticed something comparing the base GW2 to HoT, the game seems to have serious problems figuring out what it’s going to be. I didn’t want to type this until I’d played the game for a few weeks, just to get a good feel for it. When the game came out, it seemed to want to be a casual game people could play without investing much time, and being able to get the most out of a few hours of game play. You could take a 3 month break from GW2, come back, and still be able to play all the content. The balance for the game wasn’t perfect, but you could pretty much use any gear, nearly any build, and do almost any content in the game.

Then we compare it to HoT. Now with masteries, the grind it takes to get them can be very arduous. It takes a large amount of time so playing for 2-3 hours a day doesn’t feel like you’ve accomplished much. It requires a less casual player. I feel like if I were to take a 3 month break from HoT, no one would be doing the multiple player hero points, I would need friends or a guild to finish it, same with some of the events, something that wasn’t in the game before. The amount of work there is in the game seems overwhelming, from the perspective of someone who plays the game casually. Especially because so much content is locked behind an exp grind. A grind that takes as much xp as getting 1-80 several times over.

In summation, it just seems that GW2 can’t decide what it wants to be. Does it want to be a casual game with lots of boomerang players? or a hardcore game with a small but steady hardcore audience? Do you want a lot of people to be able to experience all the content right away, or lock the content behind grinds, and group content? Both perspectives have their merits, but it’s important to decide on one, as trying to do both will most likely result in no one being happy.

I think it’s hard to admit this, especially someone who logs in lots of hours every day in game, but you aren’t wrong. Whenever there is a big update to the game, such as living story, introduction of fractals, and most blatantly with the release of HoT, Anet tends to change their entire system or mechanics. With living story they went from having open world experience to an instanced experience (which in my opinion was a change for the better), dungeons were supposed to be THE instanced 5 map party runs but that was soon dropped very early into GW2, with fractals the system has been changed twice already (some might say for the worse especially with HoT), trait system has been overhauled twice already along with the acquisition of utility skills, WvW has been changed here and there, and so on.

I believe that the problem with Anet is that they lack the ability of hindsight and listening to the player community. It was a problem at the start of GW2 where they simply made changes and never told anyone why. Now, they fixed that and explain most of the changes they do (definitely not all). The lack of hindsight about their in game content and how it would look down the road, along with what the player community actually wants, and what Anet wants for the game at times, are strangely distant from one another.

Anet stated that people will stop running dungeons if we take away the reward which was explicitly stated by the devs just before the release. They feared that people would prefer old content over the new stuff. Even with the reward nerf for dungeons, people are running them, probably to the same equivalent (if not more) than pre-HoT. With fractals, we were promised new, more, and unique instabilities which is actually the complete opposite. Anet also stated that they did not want their player community to have to roll for the easy ones anymore and instead stated if they make each level a specific island, people will run all of them. This is partially true in that their are new achievements that require players to run all 1-100 for the full reward. However, with the poor implementation of some mechanics, once players reach all the achievements (who many have already done so), will only run the same 3 fractals over and over for the daily achievement because they are the easiest/fastest. This is an example of lack of hindsight, something that the player community told them would happen the moment they released news of fractal changes. In the previous system, you were able to roll for swamp, but the next 3 fractals were a mystery, which to me at least made it more fun to guess what would be coming next. The old system made it so that only underwater fractal wasn’t run because people rolled swamp. Soon, (and you will notice it a bit now too just weeks into HoT), that people will now only roll the same 3 or 4 fractals to get the daily achievement and ignore the rest. It’s also important to mention that there is no new news of any new fractal levels.

Again, this is just my opinion and only several of the examples that quickly come to mind. I just wish for Anet to listen more closely to it’s community. Their lack of responses and communication on the forums and reddit as of recently is also quite disheartening. Let’s hope for the best.

Okay I think some might be confused because everyone keeps saying +5 infusion, when it is actually the +5 versatile simple infusion. You can’t directly trade in a crafted +5 infusion for a +7. It is only the versatile ones.

No, what I was implying is that their are items in game such as rocks you can buy with karma that you can toss at enemies to knock them down, or potions that transform you to give you different skill bars. That’s the part I’m for removing… the tonics about specific mob slaying, i’m 50/50 with.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Yeah consumables of various natures are kind of weird. They disabled Spiky Fruit in dungeons and fractals but not the Rocks you buy from Brisban Wildlands for instance. Plenty of other consumables still available for use in instances though I doubt many are even bothering to use them anymore since dungeons aren’t really done anymore and fractals don’t need them now.

As far as the slaying sigils/potions, Anet had said previously that they didn’t like them because they became seen as required gear for X content.

Yes, pretty much what I feel about your last statement is why I’m 50/50. In order to optomize I would have to redo my expensive sigils and runes just to get a tiny bonus. Theoretically, I could do it, but do I really want to, the answer is not at all.

Hey Gaile, nice to hear that you guys are actively making sure people aren’t exploiting raids to get easy wins.

I’m not sure if I read that correctly, but… are you suggesting that using appropriate slaying potions and slaying sigils is exploiting?

@Gaile: Thanks for the heads-up. I think a lot of people where expecting this to happen and in my opinion it’s a good move. All those different potions were cluttering up my inventory far too long anyways

Following up on today’s blog post about raid rewards, we wanted to share some details on specific items:

In order to preserve the challenge of raids, we’re disabling the use of a number of items inside raid instances. Many of these restrictions will be familiar, as they’re also disabled in WvW and dungeons. However, we are also disallowing the use of many runes and sigils that provide bonus damage versus particular types of enemies, as well as the potions that give similar effects. Using food and utility buffs inside a raid is perfectly okay, but most other items that give bonus damage or access to new skills beyond your profession have been disabled.

Hey Gaile, nice to hear that you guys are actively making sure people aren’t exploiting raids to get easy wins. I just wanted to ask one thing however.

With the promise of new and improved Fractal rewards that we were told and the poor implementation of it in game, can you reassure the loyal pve hard-core players that the rewards will be well balanced and the chances of getting ascended gear for example is not almost non-existent?

I think with the state of end game pve as it is now (such as bad rewards for fractals, megaserver maps in Maguuma not working properly, very little exp from doing meta events), it might be a good idea for the Anet team to make sure that the bosses are balanced properly and the rewards are obtainable at a reasonable level (considering the difficulty of this new content).

64 bit beta today

ArenaColin
We are rolling out a beta version of a 64 bit client today if all goes well – please give this a shot if youre having crash issues and let us know if that does the trick!

As a non computer literate person, what does this mean to me?

If means if you have it the game will use more ram. Typically a 32-bit game will not use more than 3gb of ram even if you have 16gb in your computer.

64-bit will allow the game to use as much as it wants/needs.

So, as someone who uses a Dell laptop and have windows 10 on it, running GW2 on more or less the minimum settings and not having many connection issues if any with the game, should I get the 64 bit version or just stay where I am now?

Eight Samurai.6840

So I’ve hit FoTM lvl 100 and I’d like to post some feedback. Unfortunately it is mostly negative because I believe the update actually made fractals worse in many respects. It seems to me like the fractal updates were rushed and as a result the quality suffered. There are a number of problems with the new system:

1. The Boon Fumbler instability (when you dodge roll, you lose all your boons) is just bad.

Fractals used to be one of the few places in the game where skill and knowledge of each specific encounter (boss attack tells, etc) mattered. Dodging mattered in most cases. Why would you punish skilled play? Becoming better at fractals is fun, being punished for applying skill is not. There are ways to reduce the effectiveness of dodging (see Mai Trin) other than a blanket ‘f*** you if you dodge’ rule. Suggestion: remove this instability and add specific boss mechanics at higher levels (if you must).

2. Huge health pools and nerfed boss damage make fractals tedious, boring and requiring less skill

This is related to the previous issue too. Mai Trin at lvl 100 hits for less than Mai Trin used to at lvl 50 before HoT. This makes skill and encounter knowledge less important, while making boss fights slow, boring and unfun. Why learn the boss attacks and mechanics when they don’t actually threaten to kill you? High level fractals (51+) were supposed to be even more challenging than the 40-50 tier we had before HoT, but most of them are not. Now some fractals are actually somewhat challenging, but many need to be balanced individually. I’d suggest you make some bosses (maybe depending on the level/intability) have high toughness but low vitality, wheres others have low toughness and high vitality, but not both.

But the biggest issue of all is this:

3. Once a player is done with their achievements, almost all fractals (esp. lvl 51+) become dead content for them.

Remember how the aquatic fractal before HoT was dead? For exactly the same reason almost all 51+ lvl fractals will be dead. The reason is that fractal rewards are tied to dailies, and the single 51+ daily will be completed by doing a combination of Swamp and Molten Duo fractals, because they are the quickest, just like how everyone used to roll for Swamp which meant they never do the Aquatic fractal. The game doesn’t reward you for doing the hard fractals at all. There absolutely need to be multiple specific lvl 51+ daily fractals. But even this will solve the issue only partially. Before HoT, in order to get the best rewards (at lvl 50 daily) you HAD to potentially do the hardest fractals in the game every day! There isn’t an equivalently hard + rewarding option now.

4. Rewards

I don’t have detailed statistics on how good the rewards from dailies are, but my feeling is that the rewards aren’t even as good as they were before HoT. I’ll just say that I’m happy I did the 40/50 dailies for the past year and a half before HoT so now I’ll never have to craft another ascended weapon or armor piece.

Let me know if I’ve missed or misinterpreted something.

Yes I totally agree with everything that was said here. With the previous system, you might be able to roll swamp as the first, but the rest of the 3 fractals were unknown and random. Now you can select the same ones every single day to make it easier for yourself. The rewards are also very bland. I would really appreciate it if we could get a dev response here to hear their opinion.

List of concerns I've seen with fractals.

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Eight Samurai.6840

Eight Samurai.6840

I have been reading the GW2 reddit and the GW2 forums about fractals a lot. There are critical concerns about Fractals post-HoT:

If you did not purchase HoT you will not be able to do fractals past level 70 or so due to agony becoming too high.

There is no more gold reward for fractals even though it was promised that the gold taken away from dungeons would go to fractals.

You have to pay 20 silver to open your reward boxes. Anet is actually punishing players who want to claim their reward. From what I have seen when opening the chests so far is you get those trophy rewards, same ones you get throughout pve where you go to a merchant and sell instantly because they are garbage. Anet claimed that the rewards would be improved, yet no evidence of this.

The health pool of bosses the higher you go are too dramatically high. They claimed that you should be able to beat a fractal island during a lunch break, which is not the case for some levels. Raising the health of bosses does not make a fight more fun or challenging, just more annoying.

In order to get your full daily reward you have to run specific fractal levels that might not be of any interest to you. Meaning, Anet is stopping you from running the fractal levels you want to run.

All those ascended rings you have stored up from Fractals, you have to now pay 1 gold to salvage one ring.

This is everything I can come up with so far. If I missed something please add it to the comments.

P.S: I posted this to reddit, but wanted to post it here too for people who don’t use that site.

This is not grind…this is playing content to unlock the class.

Had Arena Net decided to gate these behind the personal story, it would have been effectively the same thing. Gating access behind content.

This…this is the most normal thing in the world.

Get to level 80, then play the expansion to unlock the class.

Right? I feel like people have become so entitled they don’t want a game anymore. They just want to hit character create and have everything in the game maxed out for them and done.

No, that was beta weekend.

I am most definitely NOT saying I want a game to play itself. I myself say to people to actually play the game. And I’m fully intending to play the game. However, I wanted to enjoy the content (which I will anyways, the first time), but not be forced to practically play the entire new content multiple times on multiple characters, just to get access to elite specs. I’d rather not feel like I have to rush through something as fast as I can on multiple characters. My solution, is to not bother. My solution, is to not take any of my current characters through the HoT story, and instead take Revenant through it. Unless, of course, you have to go far into the story to unlock Revenant.

There is no unlocking Revenant. It is created during character creation. Herald on the other hand you would need to unlock.

I think that person he’s talking about is more than likely someone else. Back when the old dungeon system was in place where there was a party leader of a dungeon party, there was someone who would ‘buy’ an arah path from an LFG, somehow take over the party, and kick everyone else to become the party leader and sell all the spots for all the profit. With the new party system there is no more party leader and you need 3 votes to kick someone. More than likely that’s not him but who knows.

Imho disincentivize means less appealing while still being appealing, the other means to be not appealing at all. And I am pretty sure John Smith means the former one.

Part of the purpose is to incentivize people to participate more in the content we support, which at the moment is fractals. – JohnSmith (https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/3ogusa/the_guild_wars_2_heart_of_thorns_economy/cvxdpi6)

But loooots of people already do. Everyone i know who runs fractals also runs dungeons.

True – but I’ll reckon only a small fraction of those who run dungeons also run fractals.

Yes, you are right less people run fractals who run dungeons. But, do you think that extra gold is the right way to get more people into fractals when you can get so many other things more valuable than gold like ascended weapon/armor boxes. If they didn’t run fractals for the chance of getting unique skins and ascended boxes, I doubt most of them would do it for the 1 extra gold u’ll get for completing them now.

No whiteknighting nonsense!

  • The gold from completing a dungeon is getting nerfed not removed.
  • The TP will take on a new equilibrium for the majority of its items, high priced stuff like charged lodestones and giant eyes are surely to fall with map rewards while others are going up due to demand with HoT recipes.
  • The demand for t5 materials is getting improved to get closer towards silk’s price with new HoT recipes.
  • Dungeons will still generate a ton of blues/greens which are the biggest source of t5 materials.
  • Salvage is getting revamped Some of these changes will reduce output to help us maintain scarcity, and some will rebalance heavily input materials with more rare materials to help even out some of the variation of scarcity we currently have.
this could imply that salvaging lv60-80 blues and greens wil reward t2-4 materials which are more rare than their t5 counterparts which will improve gold/salvage at this time.
  • Gold generated in dungeons was tremendously higher than gold generated in fractals by time.

Overal, the gold nerf is not outrageous considering that the TP is getting overhauled with it.

Remember when anet maid new fractal maps? Good times… because as of now we are getting the same dozen we have all been doing the last 2-3 years.

If ANet is successful in introducing deflation back to the economy (pump more mats, balance the scarcity of the items, reduce gold generation, etc.), your gold will become more valuable, and so does it lowers the gold to gems exchange rate. I think it’s worth a caution to hold on to your gold reserve for a future use after HoT and try not to hoard too many luxury and big ticket items (skins, precursors, etc.)

But then Halloween is rolling out, so good luck!

Also J. Smith has words that he’s looking into adding valuable mats into dungeons to shift its values from solely gold to more tangible rewards. I hope it would means less Blue/Green and more Rare quality or T6 mats.

No, they aren’t removing the gold that dungeons provided. They are moving it to fractals. There is no deflation happening because of this, just anet’s attempt to force their players to stop dungeoning.

To bad, PvP is already the by far fastest way of getting tokens/dungeon-skins. I have a guildy that wanted the HotW skins and got them all in 1 day from PvP. It took alot of 1)run in
2) press 1
3) jump down and die
4) start over from 1)

Explain to me again why pvpers have access to dungeon tokens?

Economy Questions Repost

Eight Samurai.6840

I’m a little disturbed by the level of antagonism here over the gold reward going down for dungeons. I think the concern is less over the content changes, and more over your 40g a day cash flow.

Running a series of the easiest and fastest dungeon paths, skipping as much content as possible, is generally not done to be ‘fun’. It is done strictly for gold, and it’s easy money.

The gold rewards are going down to disincentivize running easy paths for gold. People will continue to play dungeons for tokens, and if the drops are improved – people might even kill things in dungeons instead of skipping to the boss.

You’re forgetting one major aspect of GW2. You only participate in content because it gets you closer to your goal. Right now gold is the end-all-beat-all. Gold is what drives the game, and if you cannot get a reasonable amount of gold from a dungeon run, then there is no reason to run a dungeon. Simply nerfing dungeons across the board doesn’t really do much to rectify this massive problem, it just removes dungeons from the equation entirely.

What they should have done is have each dungeon give you a moderate reward based upon the time investment. Figure out an average “gold per hour” for each dungeon and push for that. Have them be lower than something like the Silver Wastes, but not so low that you should simply run the Silver Wastes instead.

This isn’t addressing the core problem with dungeon speed running. It’s ignoring it entirely, and just slapping all dungeons at the same time for the hell of it, while claiming that it’s going to address the problem.

You don’t get it. The devs don’t want to develop dungeons any more. They decided that fractals give them a greater opportunity to innovate, try out new mechanics and not be tied into the PvE maps.

Because that’s where the devs are investing development time, it would be counter productive if players don’t play them so they are discouraging the existing PvE instance content by limiting the gold rewarded, yet again.

You want rewards, don’t do dungeons, do fractals. If they lose players who are doing dungeons solely for gold, oh well but they hope you will try the new fractals that is coming with HoT, you may like it. But since existing legendary weapons still require dungeon tokens, they will still be needed, but needed for dungeon specific rewards and not as a gold faucet.

Nothing said here, suggesting alternatives or warning how this is a bad decision isn’t going to change anything. The word came down a long time ago that all future instance party content will be fractals and raids and that’s it (besides future living world seasons). It was on the HoT site the day they announced the expansion.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if some of this is also part of the “let’s kill the Zerk meta”.

But, the point is they are making dungeons obsolete. I will more than likely keep doing them because I find them fun. But you get no ascended gear, only tokens to buy exotic armor pieces, that’s about it if they remove the gold. If they do remove it at least replace it with something else.

Ooooh let’s also not forget that they have no new plans for making new fractal islands. So new system sure, but same dozen or so fractals you have been doing the last 2 years! With a static island per level they essentially made it almost impossible to add new maps without also changing the entire rotation.

“Farming” dungeons? With once-a-day runs? Can that be called “farming?”

Sounds to me like this is just a way to reduce income from the core game in order to “encourage” people to buy HoT. If a SW nerf comes soon, I’d say this is confirmed.

Almost right, but that gold is moving from dungeons to fractals, it’s not a fix for the economy. If it was a real fix they would eliminate that gold instead.

Just curious, did John Smith give a reasoning for his one word ‘Yes’ answer or just leave it at that, because I would really like to know why if it wasn’t answered yet.

If you want to get answers you have to be smart enough to ask the right questions.

Also, learn to think for yourself instead of relying on people to give you answers.

If that is the case, I’m pretty sure that having not only the forums, but also reddit filled with confusion about his one word answer and people asking why they would admit this is enough reason to go back and answer, which he nor no one else did.

Are you kidding me? They’re not confused about these one word answers. You really think they are confused by them?

“Is this going to happen? Yes”

How do you get confused about that. They are not confused.

They are upset that this is happening… Obviously they want an explanation and they aren’t getting one which only fuels their anger.

How about instead of making assumptions yet again, you go and read the responses on reddit. Yes, some of them are angry about what was said, but there are also people wanting an explanation.

Well, I guess there goes my chance of ever getting my dungeoneer collections done …

You can always pvp. :^)

Still waiting for the fractal reward track where you get fractal skins thrown after you :^)

Haha… it still baffles me as to why pvpers have to be catered to with a silver platter by giving them dungeon rewards, and for some strange reason, tomes of knowledge when you can pvp at any level.

I have got to give this guy some credit.

However you may feel about the change itself, this is actually pretty solid community interaction.

But it’s not a solid answer. The question is WHY do this? If Dungeons were infact, very popular, why try to force players to other parts of the game? Whn not actually put resources into new dungeons. So much for “play your way”.

The “community interaction” you speak of is basically:

We are doing this, just cos…..

Except OP didn’t post a question asking WHY. He posted questions asking Are you doing this, Is this happening. Is that happening. All which were answered thoroughly.

Fair enough but it is blindingly obvious 95% of people would want to know why. He gave a one worded answer to a pretty kitten good question, that required a much more elaborate response. It may be “communtiy interaction”, but it it isn’t good or informative.

Yes, not having the brains to think to oneself that maybe I should explain what I mean here is in fact being ignorant.

You sound like one of those people who question the governments secret activities then call the government stupid because they don’t tell you what they’re doing.

Or when you ask your friends to go out and then they say they have plans and then you keep inquiring. They’re the stupid ones for not answering you right?

John Smith is stupid because he doesn’t answer a question that ANet probably didn’t have an answer for or didn’t want to reveal. Yes… He’s the stupid one.

Ooooh the assumptions are stronk in this one about my personal life! I’m an avid reader of news and try to keep up with politics, about the friends thing I’m not sure what you mean there but sounds like to you asking questions are baed… more sad faces :::(((

If I was John here would be a simple way to fix a lot of anger due to lack of response:

‘Yes, because blah blah blah’
‘Yes, but I am not at liberty to say atm’
‘Yes, but this will be revealed why to you shortly’

One word answers to something important are ignorant.

We aren’t telepathic or mind readers. I’ts in our basic human nature to query and question, especially when given an extremely unsatisfactory response. It’s a rather simple and acceptable request. Are you satisfied with one word answers in every facet of your daily life? If so, that is true ignorance.

Yep, pretty much this, I think you just said it better.

Anet has been bombarded for 3 years about dungeons and their lack of development which pretty much shows the community WANTS dungeons. Sure, John is telling us straight up he doesn’t want us playing dungeons. Yep great he’s communicating, woohooo! Except instead of communicating which involves listening, Anet pretty much through an F-you to all dungeoners. We are telling anet what we want, they are afraid that their fractals and raids won’t be as fun as dungeons, so they are clearly telling us that they will force us not to play dungeons by removing rewards.

I get that, I’ve been one of those voices over the years too.

It’s just…
I’m still trying to parse what a Fractal even is now. Much less how it interacts with Raids, which is itself a black box. I’m stretching my imagination to redefine the value of Ascended gear, given that it now has an entirely new context to have value in. And I think on a really good day, I might have some idea as to the implications of reward track legendaries and map rewards, and how that makes me feel about all of the previous things.

Right now I’ve got the corner pieces done on this jigsaw puzzle of a bigger picture, and even a handful of darker pieces are nonsense without knowing their place.

Well, all we can do is wait for more answers that aren’t one word responses from John Smith. We are all frustrated I think.

BINGO! And if the dev, John Smith was smart enough he would have explained why.

We’re all frustrated with this announcement, but you’re doing yourself a disservice by making really ignorant claims like this.

He’s doing his job. Consider the possibility that maybe he’d put himself in jeopardy by disclosing information that he’s not supposed to.

That is a silly statement, if he wasn’t supposed to be doing this, the entire forum post would have been long deleted by now. Right now you are making ridiculous assumptions. All I’m stating is don’t give one word answers to important questions, because more than likely, you will look like an kitten (which I’m sorry but his simple ‘yes’ answer does sound like one).
