Whoops, you’re right Sgt, my bad!
The Coat, Shoulders & Gloves are Rascal. The Boots & Eyepiece are crafted “Leather” and the Leggings are a karma piece I bought in the Iron Marches: “Mortar Teams Leather Legguards” (I’m sure the Karma ones would fit better, but I like the name), and also because they come with a big, charr-head Belt Buckle (you cant see because of the coat).
Just like Netsu, I transmuted all my exotics into this set. Definately fits the Steampunk style. The Skulls, the Eyepiece, the embroidered, classy chest thingy, the tattered jacket, and combine that with 2 Pistols hanging on the sides and the Professions variety of Backpacks, its top-notch.
(edited by Faction.4013)
My current set-up. Lately I’ve been running without the Shoulders shown (as seen in last pic).
While leveling, just go for the crafted “Leather” set (“Honed Leather Boots”, for example). It has a Burlap, layered, knee-high coat, and the Eyepiece Im wearing. Definately fits the class in the early levels.
I’m also going to disagree with people who are saying Medium Armor lacks variety. Given the fact the game is 2 MONTHS OLD, I’ve seen people playing Thieves with identical looks to the Assassin’s Creed guy. I’ll agree that there could be more, but what we have now isn’t exactly horrible. Especially because I can pretty much look any way I want at any level if I have the gold & stones to transmute, and not like a kittenhead until Im a high-level raider and have something that actually matches.
(edited by Faction.4013)
Braves Armor is the Karma Armor from the Temple Vendors in Orr, costs about 42.000 Karma a piece. I bought the hat, and banked it.
My Armor: Coat, Shoulders, and Gloves are the Rascal set, the Boots and Eyepiece are the crafted Leather set (simply “Honed Leather Boots” on the TP for example), and my pants are actually a Karma purchase from the Iron Marches, “Mortar Teams Leather Legguards”, I bought them because I loved the name. All of which has been transmuted with Exotics.
It gives off the Steampunk vibe pretty well, Skulls, Coat, bulky Boots, and the Eye-piece.

Dark Tone: Iron
White tone on Chest: Fog

I opened 3 chests today and got the Shield skin.
Maybe Im just lucky?
This might be the first time I’ve seen someone unironically say that guardians are weak (GS nerf forum blowup aside).
Exactly my thoughts too…
I had to read that 3 times.
If you put 5 points into Virtues, and 15 into Radiance to get Renewed Justice (probably the best trait in the GAME), which gives 5 stacks of Might, a Burn, and a Blind every time you kill a enemy…that right there allows you to pretty much crush anything right off the bat. Add in Empowering Might, and thats game baby.
Thanks for the pointers Faction, mucho appreciato
Anytime, buddy.
Remember: Don’t expect to be demolishing people with the Engineer, we’re not Warriors, but we can definately kill at a decent rate. We’re Utility. Not a DPS powerhouse. You’ll have to work for your kills a bit more than the average Warrior or Guardian (dodging, flying around with rocket boots, circle-strafing, etc), we can’t sit there and mash face with a Warriors Hundred Blades or a Guardians Whirlwind of ultimate lawnmowing and expect to be successful.
Oh, and Carrion Gear. Stack up on Carrion gear.
http://www.gw2build.com/builds/engineer-pve-flamethrower-5716.html
This was my Flamethrower Bible. Read the summary. It will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know. One thing to remember, you’re not going to be melting people anytime before level 70, when you’ll have HGH AND Juggernaut. Again, read it, understand it, live by it!
The only thing I changed was that I use the Rocket Boots instead of Elixir C in PvE, because the Rocket Boots have a utility skill on 20s CD that applies a MASSIVE Burn, and with the Flame Legion Runes, its a guranteed 5% more damage, the skill helps if you’re caught with your shorts down (mining, harvesting, etc), because you can apply the Burn with the Chuck Norris kick, then Rocket backwards for room to hit Flame Blast (5% more damage on a Flame Blast that almost always crits = sweeeeeet!). I also threw my leftover 10pts into Explosives for Incendiary Powder: AGAIN! Burn-on-crit + Flame Legion Runes means 5% more damage, and already maxing out Firearms gives you a metric ton of Crit chance.
Also, if you equip an Engineer Kit (Flamethrower, Bomb, Elixir Gun), you lose the effectiveness of ALL stats & sigils on your weapons. I run with P/P, because sometimes the Gats are more effective than a Flamethrower (Close Quarters and being surrounded) with Poison Darts, Explosive Shot and most importantly: Blowtorch. But when you’re packing the Flamethrower, your weapon stats dont matter.
The Elixir Gun is AMAZING with the Build I linked, it allows for seamless swapping between the Flamethrower and the Elixir Gun, offering great support at the touch of a button.
Trust me, once you get past 70 with this build, you’ll be a wreckingball. Just circle-strafe, and use your dodge.
AND I CANNOT SAY HOW UNDERRATED BACKDRAFT IS. USE THAT SKILL! IT’S SAVED MY BACON MORE THAN I CAN COUNT!

every class I want to play is weak (Ranger, Necro, Guardian)
Wait…what?!
I main an Engineer at 80, and although I have 0 problems, my Hammer-Guardian alt can just obliterate everything it touches in half the time and with half the risks as the Engineer…and I’ve yet to see anyone have ANY issues with a Ranger besides them being boring to play (or so I hear). If you think those professions are “weak”, you’ll be in for a real treat for the first 35 levels as an Engineer, especially if you can’t kite, or ground-target your Grenade throws properly.
Im really not trying to be rude here, but Im seeing the “FotM” train coming through our station pretty soon.
I’m on Blackgate.
So I just came back from Oktoberfest, was excited for this weeks match-ups and when I log on i was shocked and disappointed at what i saw.
I got this game for the WvW and this is now the 2nd week in a row where we had the game locked down in the first day so the other two servers dont really send in the numbers to try and fight back. Even waiting till next week, if we move up in ranking, the flux of people out or in of BG is gonna skew the matches.
Anent really needs to get their kitten together and stop these free server transfers because it is simply ruining WvW. It’s not really fun for anyone when it gets to this point. BG is already 165k above 2nd place. i know the points are garbage, but to new players or casual WvW’s who see that score they think “oh kitten we’re being stomped, no point in WvW this week” or something, i know i did when i first started WvW and CD destroyed us. gets boring at times like these.
Not suprised considering this is the second week where HoD just basically gave up.
Last week against Stormbluff and Jade Quarry, they never had more than 3 camps at once when I was logged in…
It was pretty much SBI vs. JQ all week. And like you said, if one sever has the numbers, its going to be like this, especially in a 1v1 situation like there was last week with us.

Thief.
Thats about all that needs to be said.
It is a nightmare at first…
Originally I planned on playing a Warrior, that was my “Pre-Release” class (having never played the Betas), so I was all about the Warrior. Played it, didn’t excite me as much. I had absolutely ZERO interest in the Engineer. Like…I didn’t even read the press release when the class was announced. I just did a “mmmhmm”.
I decided to give it a spin simply because I remember seeing a Charr with a Flamethrower in the Dredge Mines in Wayfarer Hills while on my Warrior, I said “What the hell, I’ll give it a spin”.
The first 40 levels were a kitten terrifying experience. Mostly because the Kits dont scale well, Grenades are the only viable way to level up at a decent rate, unless you pretty much play a “RTS” with your skills and micromanage, which I had to do: I used a Flamethrower PRE-JUGGERNAUT change…so I was just asking for the punishment, I’d have to use Blowtorch, then switch kits, then sometimes use the Shield, then Kite, Turrets blow, etc…where most Professions can just root themselves and stomp 7 dudes.
Fast Forward to now. Being 80 is amazing as an Engineer. With my Exotics and a Condition-Heavy Flamethrower build, I can just melt things with almost no problem. When I see a mob train rushing me, my pants get tight. Tossing Elixirs are great support, and the fact that there aren’t as many Engineers as other Professions make us a rare breed.
TLDR; Its hell at first, trust me. But once you get your Master Traits, it gets better & better. If you need a hand with anything, feel free to PM me, I’ll help any way I can.

I was once (briefly) part of a guild which claimed they couldn’t enter tournaments because one of the members worked for Anet and they were apparently banned to prevent accusations of favouritism and even then they wouldn’t say who it was.
Yep, I remember that happening too.
On Stormbluff Isle, most of the “Barrens Chat” is isolated to Queensdale. Even LA is’nt that bad.
Hell, yesterday, I was waiting around in Queensdale for CM groups, and I wound up buying a lowbie a Sword off the TP because he was asking in Map Chat…if you want kitten to change, it all starts with you.
However, answering a PvP related question related to beating a class 1v1 is a pretty long & drawn-out explanation…even for me, and I’ve played about every possible aspect & build of my chosen profession. Even I would say “Head to GW2.com, and check the Class forums”. Because you and I both know, if you start laying down strategy on how to beat that class in /map-chat, it’ll be seconds before the meatheads who play that class in the zone are calling you a noob, etc.

@Faction GJ, well spotted! I wonder if Ruby Djinn is Ruby Bayer who I remember from massively and she was a huge fan of Guild Wars 1 (like 2xGWAMM). I seem to remember hearing that she joined Arenanet, in a press release a while ago.
It is Rubi Bayer. She joined Anet I think as a Community Manager. I used to follow Massively.com religiously until SW:TOR released. Then it became a cesspool of trolling and “deathknell claims”.

Bought the game the day after release…
Just hit 80 on Wednesday the 17th…
It’s perfect as is.
They do…
I see them constantly on Stormbluff Isle. I seen one yesterday in the Beetletun Fields at like 2am, name was “Krytan”. There was another one in LA earlier in the week, a Charr, cant remember the name…
So yeah…take it easy people…they’re around…
If you’re looking for the skins, head to the Iron Marches. You’ll find all the pieces through Renown Hearts / Karma Vendors.

Thanks for the reply.
I feel playing what we love is important too. I really like guardian’s gameplay with greatsword more than my warrior. But I dislike Norn after playing it for quite some times.I did further research and it made me more dilemma.
I just found out they nerfed guardian’s GS recently. They increased the cool-down for GS skills. It made me sad. I was comfortable with guardian before I started my warrior. Why can’t they stop touching nerfing the skills after it’s launched? It made my choices even harder. I only want a character that’s not “kill-first-before-getting-killed”. I don’t want a kiting character too. I hate kiting mobs or bosses. The guardian that I play have comfortable combos. I feel relaxed with it. I don’t know about now since they nerfed it.
Remove your Greatsword, Replace it with a Hammer, spec into Altrusive Healing and Empowering Might. Put 5 into Virtues, and 15 into Radiance…You will dominate. AND supply a monumental amount of support (3 stacks of Might, Blind, Invulnerability, and heavy Burn Damage every time you kill a mob through Virtue of Justice Spam).
My Norn Guardian is the same level. Level 50. If you see how they look in their Cultural Armors, you’ll probably change your mind. I simply like the premise of the Engineer alot more, so Im main-lining an Engineer, and my Guardian is going to be my alt.
(edited by Faction.4013)
You don’t even have to have “Elixr B” purchased with Skill Points to get the activation, either.
I have that Eyepiece skin too, “Noblemans Monacle” or something like that. Got that in the bank. Used it until I got the hat (not a fan of the Feather though, looking foward to getting the Flat-Brim).
I’ll agree that the Engineer should have a bit more metal / gear / cog-inspired armors, but with the personal feel and opportunity to customize your armor color / appearance, rather than looking like the same shlub at end-game, you’ll have this debate until the end of time.
Im sure as more content is added, there’ll be more skins to come out.
Quick Story: I played a great many MMOs in the last 8 or-so years, and one of the most fun classes I had played in any of them, was the WAR Witch Hunter. I stopped playing WAR for obvious reasons, and always wanted an opportunity to AT LEAST bring back the appearance of my beloved Witch Hunter in some form or another in whichever game I eventually called home. Fast Forward to now, I can duplicate the appearance of the Witch Hunter in GW2, and the class I chose could even fit the appearance a bit for Lore / RP purposes (not that I RP at all), and I am unbelieveably stoked about that.
Now if I could just get a Pipe and a taller hat, I’d be set. I already have the epic mustache.
(edited by Faction.4013)
Engineers are short on stylish armor, unless they want to look like a ranger, as many of you I see went with.
Im not really understanding how a Trenchcoat constitutes to looking like a Ranger…besides the GW1 Gem-Shop skin. I wouldn’t even call the Gem-Shop skin a Trench, I’d call it some kind of Shawl / Robe thing…
When you choose the Engineer class, its promo armor is….a Trenchcoat….whereas the Rangers are mostly Tunics. But if you look at the Medium Armor classes (Thieves, Rangers and Engineers), nothing really screams for more than Tunics and Trenches. Now I’ll agree there are a bit too many Trenches…however, there are some REALLY nice Tunics available at early levels. I had one, it had the tribal embroidery in it, pretty nifty. “Marksmans Tunic” I think it was.

Witch Hunter.
Demon Hunter.
Vampire Hunter.
Bounty Hunter.
My munitions & I hunt it all! And I look like a bad mother*&^%er doing it.

One of the best ones here. It even gives a guide how to place your trait points as you level. This is the one I follow, has’nt steered me wrong yet.
Enjoy!
Having said that, I really dislike medium armor design in this game. Both light and heavy has some variety, while medium tends to heavily favour trenchcoats. And most helmets are just masks of some sort or wide-brim hats. Wish there was more variety there.
Yeah…but really what else do you want, I mean, I’ve seen pics in the Thief Forums of people looking IDENTICAL to the Assassins Creed dude. If you put enough effort into it, Im sure you’ll find something that you like.
With my Norn Engineer, Im rather pleased with the look, I got the Rascal Armor (which has skulls and stuff all over it), some bulky Boots, and one of those Wide Brim Hats. With the 2 Pistols, I look like a WAR Witch Hunter (Which was one of my favorite classes in any MMO). All I need would be a Pipe and maybe a TALLER hat.
(edited by Faction.4013)
really…you don’t say…there’s some continuity between “rogue” archetype classes in fantasy RPG’s. never would have figured.
Talking mostly about appearance, champ.
Settle down.
Anyone else notice that if you dress a Thief up in Rascal Armor and get one of those Brim Hats, roll with a P/P or a S/P you look and play ALOT like the Witch Hunter from Warhammer?
I know this is dumb, but I just wonder how many peeps (if any) thought this.

Possibility….but still, most likely just a typo. Hopefully this isn’t going to turn into a racism thing…if so, the area just outside of Undercity back in the early days of WoW would’ve had Jesse Jackson protesting.
Lets just say questionable use of trees and corpses. EVERYWHERE.
AS I said, the word is censored by the forums, so the link will send you to kitten.
GAH! Just noticed that….crap!

Absolutely!
Having a juggernaut of a Norn Guardian that uses a massive Hammer, I think I can support the ta-tas for the month and dye his armor pink, from its traditional Gold and Sapphire colors.
Especially considering I take the Armor VERY seriously. I spent the better part of 5 hours gettting the right shade of blue…
Im there!

For whatever reason there was a lot of players there tonight
MoPandaria launched today. So thats probably why….wait…
Agree with Ran 100%. I use almost that exact same set-up, only with a Sword & Torch. The Virtue of Justice refresh & Blind on activation can have me pretty much solo-ing Champions and DEs.
Why endgame PVE feels like a boring standstill (and what can be done to fix it)
Posted by: Faction.4013
OK OK OK, perhaps it’s a mechanics thing, I’ll cough up that much. As a lower level player (as stated above), I may not know the ungodly amount that it costs to travel to waypoints, although I hear its pretty steep. So thats a possible mechanic issue.
Another possible mechanic issue (that I agree with) is there’s no long-distance way to tell whats going on in a region if you’re not within earshot of the event. If the regions were quartered and sent out a message when a new event sprung up in the 1/4 area, you could see it on your map from further away. THAT is what I’d love to see.
However, you’re essentially arguing semantics on fixes and QoL features that most people dont even know they need yet, because there’s not THAT many 80s, and there’s no content like this out there in different games to take notes from.
Also, we’re 27 days in, give a little slack for the new direction ANet is taking with the game, again, its not like they can just copy features that some other game is doing, when there’s no other game out there like this…

I gotta agree with DusK, This game launched with more content / dynamic content than any game in recent memory. Probably ever.
This seems like a case of “Flying through levelling” and complaining that the Devs arent dropping content fast enough for you to crush in 16 hours, which would take most of us over 2 weeks.
Hell, Im level 37, have 18% map completition and my highest craft is 177. AND I PLAY THE GAME FOR MORE THAN 4 HOURS A DAY!! Apply the brakes once in a while and you won’t be so kitten bored…
**And I bought the game the day after Launch. Turtle speed FTW!!
Schakal, I thank you VERY much for your input and breakdown. It was a tremendous help!!
I really appreciate it!!
Hello guys, I recently picked up a Sword/Torch after hearing alot of good things (Used to be an avid Hammer user), and boy, I must say, it is AMAZING, however, Im a bit stumped as to which way I should trait myself, I have a good idea, but can’t really nail down the specifics, as Im only level 36 and JUST got into it.
Perhaps those out there with more experience on the workings of the weapon combo would share their knowledge, I’d be greatly appreciative!
You guys kickkitten Thanks VERY much!
(edited by Faction.4013)
Hey guys, Sorta new player here, recently rolled a Guardian, and I’ve ALWAYS loved being a 2H Hammer-Class player (LOVED the Bear Shaman in AoC and the Warrior-Priest in WAR), the Guardian fits my playstyle perfectly! However, I can’t seem to put together a good trait build, or one that makes sense. I see alot of you guys talking great things and I was wondering if you guys would be kind enough to link a solid Hammer Build, as I STILL can’t find one with PvE in mind.
I tried looking for what “Brutaly” was mentioning with “altruistic healing and empowering might” but I cant put together anything that synergizes well, or the Spirit Weapons Build (Which is pretty self explanitory until AFTER getting the Spirit Hammer & Sword, then what?), or even the Burning Retaliation Build sounds good, but I have no idea where to even start with that.
Im sorry to derail like this, but with all the Hammer talk, I figure this may be the best place to ask.
I really appreciate it guys!
