Everyone thinks their class sucks, that’s why. While the necro isnt particularly good for PvE it’s not terrible and other classes have it worse (Elementalist). Necros can do fine in WvW, which you said; and while I dont play PvP I hear they’re not bad there.

Elementalist is not bad, they’re asked for Fire fields + ice bow & fgs to deal insane damage..

I’m full zerker necro accepted in full dps parties, for example CoE/Arah I hit 6-10k life blasts + piercing + vuln stacking , also have acces to wells that blind/ stacks vulnerability + deal high damage , Necro’s aren’t that bad, we’re awesome PvE is all about knowing the mechanics :p

So whats the purpose of this topic then if MM is getting buffed?

Because there are also nerfs. A very small nerf to a trait, a nerf to putrid explosion, and a change to VM (which will result in a nerf for some and buff for others, depending on scaling). And any time something is nerfed, even if other buffs are made the nerfs are all that people focus on.

Nooo ! Not the putrid explosion nerf everything except for that :o (and charge ofc n.n) I hope we won’t notice the difference to much :/

The “nerf” is making it blockable. Damage is completely unchanged.

I think they are still thinking how to change the signet, in the meantime they nerfed it, though it will not stop people from whining.

its not just the passive that is the problem. Its warriors as a whole.

oh warriors are perfect where they are, just like anet claims it is. Its the rest of the classes that needs to catch up.

An evolving minion would actually be really cool. It would highly reward the MM for keeping them alive, as well as give you a sense of pride. Not to mention it could really fix some issues for PvE (where minions could probably hit the kitten mode pretty often), but without being too bad for PvP (where if the enemy was smart they could just kill the minion). Mechanics would need thought for balance, but awesome idea.

Indeed, but since the flesh golem regens out of combat he could be one tough kitten sooo people will start to complain

If you want to go condimancer, the best thing to get is:
Armor+Weapons : Rabid Stats
Runes: Superior Rune of Undead
Weapons: Scepter+Dagger / Staff
Utilities: Consume Conditions – Blood is power – Signet of spite/Corrupt boon – Epidemic/Signet of the locust (running)
Build: 30/30/10/0/0
Spite: III-IV-XI/XII
Curses: II-IX-VII
DM: VI
Tactic: Bleed kitten bleeeeed ! (Eminem: ‘Kim’)

I hope you understand what I mean and what uses things got, if not just ask !

minion master is not a good build. it is simpyl worse in teamfights than conditions while not being better in 1v1(ye it is easier in 1v1 but a correctly played condition spec is better than minion master)

Mehh, depends on how you play it, as a MM I’m close point defender in tourneys so I rarely get involved into fights bigger then 1v2, I can survive damage and keep my spot

I used to command as a MM (just for fun), but people liked my idea, so more necros went MM in my zerg (just for fun ofc) and guess what, it was fun

Why I still don't like Minion masters.

I’m not suggesting to completely change all minion skills to fit this. Just a few so we can have more diverse minion masters. But what do you guys think?

For a long time I’ve been asking for them to expand the minion system. I think the minions we have now are “fine” (disregarding some standing AI/balance issues), but I think we could use some new skills and traits that are designed to increase the type of playstyles available.

I don’t think corpses should be used, simply because it wouldn’t really do anything meaningful, except on occasion bar you from using the skill when you need it, and not really in a fun way.

However, I’d like to see:
1) A pistol off-hand that “shoots” jagged horrors
2) An ability that just summoned minions every time it was pressed
3) New minion types that expand on how MMs are played
4) New traits that accomplish things above

Some other ideas:
1) A skill that scales up. It has some negative effect (maybe sacrificing an increasing % of HP, or self-applying worse conditions), but summons progressively stronger minions.
2) Along with above, skills/traits that either make the Necromancer weaker or hurt the necro, but with the benefit of allowing more strength to the minion. Examples: reserving % of your HP to summon “infinite” amounts of minions (X% on each cast, each minion alive reserves it, so if you had 5 minions out with the skill and each reserved 5%, you’d only have 75% of your health available), giving your toughness to them, giving your boons to minions, giving your life siphoning to them, etc.
3) More types of minions/additional expansions of what they can do (Curse of the Master, adds conditions to every X attack, for example).

Basically, minions are a pretty significant part of the Necromancer identity. In GW1, we had a fairly large amount of options in how we wanted to play, both with minion types, and then your overall build (enchants, hexes, elite, etc.), and I’d love to have more ways to play MM in GW2. It also allows for more ways to balance minions, instead of every MM being a tanky DPS assassin buiser healer support bunker.

Always the idea of a pistol shooting jagged horrors n.n I like it

I know what you mean, and many people agree with that I guess , but they won’t remove minion skills to get more minions at once that are spammable, but if you think about the traitsystem, MM’s would be OP and dominant over everyone else, some people even claim us to be OP now at PvP..
+ Would lead to a nerf anyway :p

I used to run A/F and D/WH, 20/0/30/20/0, Clerics, 4x vamp 2x melandru, sigil of leeching on each set, bloodlust on dagger, hobbling on axe

CC/bone minions/bone fiend/flesh wurm/flesh golem

Dunno whats up with minion AI atm, if I get around to playing again I can let you know, but its generally not as big of an issue as people make it out to be. Take them to the NPC golems and play around with your skills and see what makes them aggro well, and keep in mind that they tend to dislike elevation differences.

Why clerics and what’s good at 4x vamp + 2x melandru ? The life leeching ?
Also, why do you prefer bone fiend over shadow fiend ?
I’ve been testing Minions out at golems to check their ‘activation mode’ : when I start attacking after 2s they always join in battle, but when I’m in the tourney they start slacking :/

Thank you for sharing your experiences I didn’t know that Lyssa would activate on golem’s charge :O ! I’m gonna look at the differences when I get home
+ what do you prefer ? Fetid Consumption variety or not ?
+ Is axe autoattack a little to weak maybe ?
Another thing, I’ve noticed that Minion AI is failing again.. What do you use to activate them into ‘combat mode’ ?

I usually prefer 20/0/30/20/0, but I bounce between the two.
Axe autoattack is rubbish.
The most efficient technique to get your minions to work properly is to pray. Seriously, though, the most reliable way to get them to activate is for them to take damage- but that’s not in your control 99% of the time.

I’ve tested out Lyssa runes yesterday, man it was epic just wonder what’s the icd on the runes activation ?

I’ve seen him activate most of the time when you use a ‘channel skill’ like axe 2 or dagger 2 , especially dagger 2!

All im saying is I have 5 traits dirctly tied into minions. A 6th trait is taken to support my minions. I am completly built around them. I can tell you, I wouldnt take any of these GM traits over what I have, and any nerf is gonna hurt me. In all my PvE ive been told MM is bad, never once was I told it to be good. Everytime I SPvP no one ever told me it was a problem. They just complained about mesmers and theives and the occasional warrior. A minion master is a bit more fair, because you have your targets, you know what to attack. A mesmer is confuing and sometimes unfair. Theives cant be hit half the time, and unless the warrior is a fool, dealing damage to them is too hard, for such high risk. Their changes in my opinion are foolish. And in no way will make this Build or even Class any healthier to the game. Just my two cents, but the uncalled balances changes finally found their way to me Better stay leveling a warrior if I want to win Guild Wars 2 (Humor me with that)

I know that on about the usual PvE kittens that think they own the world with their warrior build and don’t stand open for other build professions can have, the only way to make them shut up is to show them that you’re not one of the usual crappy guys, but an exceptional, extraordinary good player that has mastered his profession and knows what he’s doing and what he has to do.
Example: Cof P1-2 ‘Zerker’ Rush
3 Warriors + 1 Ele + 1 Necro (me)
1 warrior (5k AP) : Omg, what’s a necro doing here ?
Me(10k AP) : What’s the problem mr 5k ?
He: Necro’s can’t be good
Other warrior whispers me: he’s trying to kick you but we won’t accept it
Other warriors says: give him a try
———> What did I do ? I rushed through Cof with my well build, stacked vuln, gave decent damage , etc / didn’t die or down ONCE ! The 5k Warrior actually did get downed a lot of crappy times because he never learned how to dodge when endure pain/whriling attack is on CD, what did they learn ? Necro’s aren’t that crappy at all, we just have to get more out of pvp and show them how good we can be n.n

He was just asking if the MM nerf was justified. Way to take one sentence and run off on a rant there.

And to those seeing this change as a boost to survival as MM, it may very well be, so long as the scaling is good.

The reason these changes are being made though is a MM Necro could gear up in full soldiers, and would have great healing and damage still through minion traits. This got just of hand and of course many necros hopped on the easy build and as a result spawned much qq from the sPvP community.

What these changes will do is tone down damage from minions a bit and make it so if the necro wants sustain from minion healing, he actually has to gear for it.

I’m sorry. I don’t like the nerf, but 5% won’t do much. Will take us a little longer to take some profession down. As for Minion healing, we’ll have to wait and see how bad it’s gonna be

3k bleed, 1k poison? No chance in hell.

To the OP, you can beat almost all the PvE content in this game with any build and comp. It’s just a question of how much time you and your party are willing to spend. Most folks want it to be done as quickly as possible, and so the ‘circlezerk’ phenomenon manifests. A power build still puts out respectable damage, and with wells, boon strips, and ease of soft CC + Weakness the Necromancer can fill a decent niche. But it’s not a class for diehard speedrunners.

Exactly, we’re not that bad at all, we can do every dungeon (rush or not) every fractal level at a decent speed, you just have to know the mechanics (easy to learn)
People should look at experience instead of profession, because everyone knows that a non experienced warrior will almost be picked over an experienced necro every time, but with consequences, their rush will fail too n.n and we can have it done in our way after all.

My thoughts:

Only Fetid Consumption varieties should use the Bloodbag. If you don’t have Fetid Consumption, use CC. You’ve already noted this so I presume you already know it, just double checking!

Fetid Consumption can be a troublesome trait if you don’t know what to expect from it. It can consume conditions as you try to throw them back at enemies with Staff 4 or Dagger 4, which can be really frustrating when key conditions are sent to your minions instead of your enemies.

IMO, as a hard point defender, or even as any necro, you should be using staff. You can rarely go wrong with a staff. As a defender, you have the obvious advantage of being able to lay down a minefield before people can get anywhere near you, and then double up on the Marks of Blood and Chilblains. Never hurts to apply a few condi stacks before you get into the fight proper.

Dagger and Axe are both nice potential mainhands. Personally, I prefer the dagger- an immobilise is, in my opinion, better than a cripple for setting up your minion combos. The Lifedrain is also quite nice, and with Bloodthirst, gets to do quite a significant amount of healing. This is my experience, of course, and you’ll want to experiment to figure out which one you like more.

All of the offhands have their benefits. I use Focus because it’s easy to spend your Spite 10 trait to boost it, the 4 is another spike that you can combo with your Bone Minion explosions, and the 5 is boonhate which you’re otherwise missing. If you’re running without Fetid Consumption, Dagger 4 can be very nice for obvious reasons. Dagger/Warhorn is always a fantastic combo.

For point holding, it’s more or less always Soldier’s amulet. You have utterly terrible scaling with Healing Power- You have maybe two effects that benefit from it.

For runes, I think that a good option to take is Lyssa. With the Flesh Golem summon and charge, you’ve got the elite CD to really exploit it.

Hello everyone on our casual relaxed 100% non raging forum !
I’m a lot into sPvP lately with my favourite build , tanker necro point guard thing with Minion Master, casual 20/0/30/20/0 OR 10/0/30/30/0
Weapons: Dagger+Warhorn – Staff OR Dagger+Warhorn – Axe+focus
Utilities: Blood Fiend/CC – Wurm/Shadow F – Bone Fiend – Bone Minion – Flesh Wurm

Sooo I was wondering.. What’s the most effective use of a MM build in tourneys ?

Necromancer in Fractals an Dungeons?

This is an old topic, the search is your friend. Here is an overview.

1. No melee cleave — this means that Necromancers don’t work well with the guardian stack n cleave meta for clearing dungeon trash and some bosses. Also on huge bosses it is possible to hit 2 hit boxes with a cleaving attack and do double damage. This means that your necromancer literally does half damage compared to other classes.

2. Bad power/zerker damage scaling, conditions underpowered to begin with and condition cap makes them worse.

2a. Terrible ranged damage with staff (and staff marks don’t hurt a lot of bosses).

3. Bad group support.

3a. Bad fields, almost no finishers.

4. Minion AI issues.

1. Place your wells on double hitbox bosses, enjoy looking at the dps

You can be a good dungeon runner even if you have no cleave attack
1. Piercing targets (LB)
2. Vuln stacking (Axe+Focus+LB)
3. Full zerker and still good survivability
4. Know the mechanics and don’t kitten things up

I do like the Norn cultural armor but imo those sculls don’t look very good. The gloves look great and it’s a shame it gets cut off like that on his right hand. I’m not a big fan of the weapons here either. 6/10

Im a one character player. In WoW I played as Warlock and I love it.
In GW2 I played as Necro and I hate it.Because I cant kill ANY players in 1v1 (I played only wvw). Yes, maybe learn to play issue but after 1 year maybe not. I never was OP, never but I get nerfed in every patch. I tried lots of builds, spent lots of real money without sucsess.
Very possible other necromancers are successfully in GW2 thats why I get nerfed.

I do not want to wait for new patch, big nerf so I give up GW2.

I think you just sucked.. I did LOTS and LOTS of 1v1 – WvW + sPvP and managed to win A LOT of times..

  • Somebody told some time ago that multiple Tainted Shackles effects doesn’t stack, so only 1 is applying the torment stacks and the immobilize. It has to be verified.
  • Reaper’s Touch not jumping between minions, it has to be verified.
  • Bone Fiend and Shadow Fiend actived abilities are unresponsive, they come after some delay. (I know they have a casting time, but sometimes they delay)
  • Minion’s UI it’s again a mess. Minions Unresponsive, sleeping bad, not attacking in both PVP and PVE
  • Plague Signet once was marked as bugged by the moment its passive didn’t remove conditions from your teammates. It has to be verified. And verify Gathering Plague too by the moment it has a similiar effect.
  • Blood is Power allows the might stacks even if the target hasn’t been hit or you have no target.
  • Corrupt Boon may be blockable. It has to be verified.
  • Flesh Golem is hyrdophobic, it goes on full cooldown touching water.
  • Plague aoe marker depends on the scale of the model. An asura’s marker will be smaller than a norn. It should be just a graphical bug, the effect should hit on the same area.
  • Fetid Consumption (Blood XI) tooltip is wrong, Minions draw conditions from every ally near you not just from yourself. The conditions aren’t drawn they’re removed.
  • Mark of Revival (Soul Reaping VII) doesn’t apply the mark when starting the ress but when the player revived is fully ressed. This was working correctly in early 2013, can’t say if it’s a ninjanerf to prevent the abuse in terror builds.
  • Dark Armor (Death Magic I) doesn’t interact with Deadly Strenght (grandmaster minor from the same line) so not allowing addictional Power.

About the Minion AI – SO TRUE… Was 1v1’ing against an engineer when I noticed during fight my flesh golem and bone minions were just standing at 900-1100 range away from me watching me fight..

Well ok, but why minions in fractals. And why 20 traitpoints too buff them?
With 20 Bloodmagic u get a bit more dmg, and u can heal yourself a little bit.
Seems much better then wasting 20 points to buff 1 kind of bad utility skills. All other traits in Death Magic are weak.

With bloodmagic u can switch traits too support your allies a little bit. And u can use all other utilitys. With 20 points in DM not.

I don’t think you get it at all, it’s not because you think that minions are weak , that they actually are. You have to try around and practice on playing with them b4 you know how they are.. If you are a MM you won’t swtich to other utilities in most cases, almost every fractal can be done with full minion run.. The role of a necro is not to heal your allies, it’s to DPS the mobs down while you can survive (unless you want to run a supportive well build, but offensive would be way better in fractals) , with minions you can easily survive + they deal damage to & got some nice abilities aswel It’s like this: if you’re really good in a way of playing (in my case MM+Condi Dam) and you can survive + able to damage the mobs then you’re fine, doesn’t even matter what build you run o.o
Dem. I love those little braindead minions, I dislike playing without them these days..

What build for Fractals?

I’m using 20/0/20/0/30 DS LB build, but with minions to tank and overall make fractals a lot easier. Not optimized at all for good group play, but makes grouping with pugs a lot easier.

Just a suggestion. But you would probably be better off with 20/0/0/20/30. Gives you more support options and minion lifesteal. The extra hp on minions isnt going to make much difference in fractals. If they survive well enough with 20 in death magic they probably survive well enough without.

Anyway to answer op. If were going for a flexible build for fractals and dungeons you could have a look at my guide. You can build it a bit more tanky if you need to and use different weapons to suit your play style and experience. You can also adapt it to a more supporty style if thats what you want (20/25/0/25/0). 25 in blood magic gives you plenty of lifesteal sustain and lower cd wells which helps keep you alive and support your team at the cost of a bit of dps.

The focus in dungeons and fractals is dps so you always want to keep your damage as high as possible. Condi dps is very lack luster and suffers from many problems. Even with a full beserker group you will struggle to keep the bleeds. Warrior, mesmer, engi and necro all stack bleeds passively with their beserker builds which will ruin your damage if you spec condi.

20 in DM is better then 20 in BM, tested that out, minion siphon does nothing if you run full zerker.. + 50% of the extra hp can actually be useful..

Or just take useful utilities that are helpful in all 3 phases? Only minion ive bothered with when soloing lupi is flesh golem for phase 1 + phase 2. But it ended up not really being worth it because I had to save it for phase switch and he died too often in phase 1. The cast time to resummon is huge.

I didn’t talk about golem, only about Flesh Wurm and Bone Minions because you can kill them when they’re at wrong place wrong time.. , I thought that you were talking about a group fight, which is easy if you’re doing 5 man dungeon.. Still can use 1 utility skill next to minions.. why replace all of them if you can use them anyway if you know WHEN o.o

Good morning fellow Necros. I currently play a MM Necro after a year of playing a condition build. I really enjoy it so far, however my main question that I have is this: I see most MM Necro builds using Soldiers gear. What makes this the best gear for the build?

I am not seeing much of an advantage in using Soldier’s gear except for the increased health pool, am I completely missing something here? Thanks in advance!

• Soldier gear advantage with 20/0/30/20/0 is being a complete tank , you deal decent damage + good minions abilities that do damage + heal you
• I used the same set-up once, because it was very good at spvp, but if you learn the build in pve you know that it’s to easy to survive so you won’t need that much of extra damage, now I went full berserker with 20/0/20/0/30 , A real DPS’er through the use of DS + runes of the scholar + Minions n.n I also replace blood fiend for Consume Conditions, way better healing skill I don’t know what the new nerf later will bring to berserkers (so to me to) but I’ll let you know how much stuff has changed..
• Why minions ? I like the idea of creating an undead army and have them attack, so I’m like a Mini-Commander (for 0gold) Rushing into packs of mobs and killing kiting destroying
• Necro 4 President, all the whiners should shut it, our class is unique and if you practice you can be very good at it to prefer a profession that you should ‘master’ then brainless skill spamming like warriors.. I do not dislike warriors, they got a nice way to play and support, dps to. But why would you want a full zerker party of 1 profession + healertank guardian if there’s so much more out of there I have warrior 80 to, but after those so called ‘rush’ parties I got really bored, I prefer playing my dear Necros so I can actually do something and think about my actions and movements n.n

You wouldnt take minions for any phase of lupi. Doing that is just stupid. This was just a showcase of why. Also yeah it was proof of that build sucking aswell.

If you know where to summon flesh wurm it’s ok + if you know his attack rotation you can also use bone minions to have a small burst at the right time..

Countering Mesmers

As a MM I have almost no problems against mesmers in spvp , I kind of tank everything and outheal myself when busy killing them..
If your not condi build: find main mesmer: lock it down and use dagger1+warhorn5+haunt+rigor mortis+ 2x putrid explosion combo to nuke em down..
+ Charge can do wonders to n.n

I run the same thing as you atm :p when my ascended armor is rdy I will change to full berserker, keep scholar , as a MM you prolly got Dagger+Warhorn and locust swarm is good enough for swiftness imo.. If you want a good emergency button, switch blood fiend to Consume Conditions + Use Flesh Wurm a little more and use it at a safe location so you can teleport to it in emergencies & use healing skill.. If you know +/- how to play necro you can keep up going more berserker because crit does increase dps a lot , that’s why I use
20/0/0/25/25 now for increased damage (Life blast does decent dps to if your getting on low hp and need to ‘survive’

Make Axe also a meelee weapon (cleave) with little faster attack speed on auto-attack (3 Way chain attack → at third attack you see a demon come out shadows and hit real quick)
2. Skill : Necro starts spinning around and becomes a dark tornado destroying everything on its path (life force gain + vuln stack)
3. Throw Dark Axe / Shoot quick death beam that teleports you to the target and applies poison

Please Give Necro Marks Unique Animations

Every mark cast has different animation already, so your asking for longer cast time on marks so you can better notice that animations are different or what?
Mark of blood – default
Chillblains – hand glows green
Putrid – hand glows black
Reapers – whole animation different and looks like poke with staff

I have to admit that I’d like every mark to have the Reaper’s mark animation I like the way you ‘slam’ the mark on someone to see them running away
