Legendaries are meant as long-term, gradual goals, obtained over the course of playing the game normally- technically, getting a legendary within few months is an anomaly. From what I hear, they’re supposed to take at least a year.

Play what you like to play, in whatever way you enjoy the game. If the legendary is your end-all be-all, and you can’t enjoy the game in other ways, you’re still going to be unhappy after you get it.

I personally like to use the kits Lionguard Lyns sells in Lion’s Arch- they come in stacks of 250 and are relatively easy to get.

Embedding runes or any sort of upgrade makes a piece of gear bound to you. This applies only to upgrades you yourself added- gear that drops with the upgrades already embedded (greens and higher) are sellable if you don’t add a different upgrade.

Thanks all. I was looking at the legendaries and while it seems difficult and time consuming, I want to get one. I really do not see anything to spend it on right now anyways. However, I do notice that you never really need to buy any gear (i’m level 15 now) you mainly just pick it up from drops…. How long before you actually need to start looking for some quality gear? When I can start running AC?

Personally, I’d recommend using on-level blues all the way to level 80, at which point I’d recommend investing in greens or (if you can afford them) rares. From there, you can start working on exotics. If you decide to dungeon a lot before 80, greens might be worthwhile.

You can run AC story mode at level 30. AC explorable, which gives tokens, can be started at 35. Both modes can be difficult at level, especially if you haven’t gotten the hang of dodging and staying mobile in battle, but it can be done.

That’s what I had in mind, to use level blues until 80. A friend told me the dungeons on here are crazy hard, especially compared to WoW, which I really like because it gives you a challenge and not half sleeping your way through dungeons.

A lot of the difficulty depends upon your group- coordination and awareness matter here much more than stats. You need to pay attention to the boss’s attacks and be able to focus fire on called targets.

Who you run with makes a massive difference as well. Dungeons are usually best done with people you know, and people who know what they’re doing. I’ve done flawless (no wipes, no deaths, less than five downs) runs with my guild, and a few days ago, successfully three-manned AC path 1 with two good friends. In contrast, I’ve run with PUGs that wipe on the first room over and over. To be bluntly honest, I’d rather take a level 35 who pays attention and tries to learn strategies over a full-exotic 80 who insists on graveyard zerging (thank god they took that out) and never dodging, ever- player skill/attitude matters that much.

When you hit lvl 30 you can run Ascalonian Catacombs, the first dungeon. Its a breath of fresh air from running Tasks out in the field. Just make sure you get into a group that can explain everything to you.

And here comes another point, my server is empty in all times! And this is my first weekend playing it.

You can guest onto a more populated server for PvE. Open the world selection window in the character screen, select a world, and choose to guest on it.

Depends on what you like to do and what you’re doing. Heart quests were made to replace the traditional “pick up quest -> kill x number of y monster -> turn in quest -> pick up another” quest hubs, but are still acknowledged by many players as one of the most boring parts of the game. I ended up ignoring hearts for my leveling and just ran around exploring and looking for events, and past 40, I started running dungeons with my guild. It’s slower, but I found it more enjoyable, and doing events in the area often filled nearby hearts.

Also, have you been to Metrica Province or the swamp in Queensdale yet? There are massive bosses there for low levels- the Fire Elemental and the Shadow Behemoth. At level 50, you’re able to fight the Shatterer, a crystal dragon, and around 60 you can fight Tequatl, an undead dragon. They’re easy by necessity due to the fact that most random groups can’t coordinate their way out of a pocket folder, but worth a look regardless.

That being said, leveling really can grind on you (haha) even though it’s better in GW2 than most other games, especially if you’re not into exploring everything and finding little easter eggs. If you haven’t yet, try to find a nice guild or make some friends- people make leveling much more fun, even if you’re just chatting with them.

EDIT: If massive battles are your thing, WvW might interest you. Though I will say that the experience (not the kind that fills a bar) will vary from server to server.

Also, take a look at different classes. It might be that the one you’re playing doesn’t interest you. I like leveling my thief since I enjoy combat on her, but warrior and guardian bore me fast.

As far as I know, they nerfed the node in Southsun due to guesting- if they hadn’t nerfed it, you’d have been able to mine the thing three times a day by jumping onto other servers, not counting any alts you may have (as nodes are per character, not per account). By that logic, since WvW isn’t affected by guesting, the rich node in EB would be left alone.

A guildmate seemed to have confirmed this yesterday, but I can’t recall if he actually saw it or was speculating.

Armor Sets Question

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Falunel.7645

Falunel.7645

Chances are, the lowbies you see with full sets of endgame armor are alts. It is possible to buy armor higher than your level and then transmute it downwards onto a piece your level.

Some armor sets are obtainable through crafting and can be bought from other players on the Trading Post. Others can be bought with dungeon tokens from the vendors in Fort Marriner in Lion’s Arch. Cultural gear can be bought for gold from cultural armor vendors in the five main racial cities. The Named set drops rarely from mobs and chests. Another set can be bought with badges in WvW. There are probably others, but those are the ones that came to mind.

Elementalist: light armor, very low health, very high dps. Kill ’mquick or be killed quickly. Difficult to master but very fun to play.

Depends on how you build. Bunker elementalists (which are very common) are “Kill slowly, but never get killed.” Just thought I’d throw that out there since people who pick ele hoping to do huge numbers are usually disappointed.

And yeah, if you can give us more details about what playstyles you like, we can give more pointers. Only surefire way to know is to just try everything that interests you.

New player-Class question

Posted by: Falunel.7645

Falunel.7645

Huh. Warrior seems hard to solo at lvl9. especially ’cuz my heal is underwhelming. Any suggestions?

How are you fighting? In GW2, avoiding damage is just as, if not more important than healing it. Try to move around when fighting, and if you see an enemy winding up a big attack, dodge out of the way.

Also, it’s normal for enemies to hit very hard, even on heavy classes. Hence the emphasis on avoiding damage. Warrior tends to be one of the more forgiving classes in that it can handle more raw damage than others, but only to a degree.

New char: Mesmer, Elementalist, or Ranger,?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Falunel.7645

Falunel.7645

What is most important to you when playing? Survivability, damage, utility, flexibility, specialization, difficulty?

I main an elementalist (played since launch), and I run double daggers and the 0/10/0/30/30 build, though I switch out my weapons manually when the situation calls for it. It lacks raw survivability, having low defense and HP, but can be nigh unkillable when played right due to its high mobility and heals/condition removals. If you plan on playing an ele, you must get used to moving constantly in battle- standing still and trying to facetank will get you killed. Just compare this battle to this battle. It’s nothing on daphoenix, but hopefully it illustrates what I said.

In essence, ele does a little bit of everything in exchange for not doing one thing especially well. My build survives well at the cost of damage- other builds can lay down high AoE damage at the price of being glassy. Broadly speaking, elementalists can damage, inflict a wide variety of conditions (bleed, burn, chill, cripple, immobilize, weakness), stack a wide variety of boons on themselves and allies (might, fury, swiftness, protection, regeneration), set up a variety of elemental combo fields (fire, water, ice, wind) and use combo finishers themselves, heal and remove conditions from allies, and control enemies with slowing conditions and knockdown. They also have the most AoE skills out of all professions.

It is a difficult class to learn- you must be able to memorize over twenty skills, think of how they link with each other, and be able to keep your head in tight spots to use the most of all of them. Ele skills also serve more functions than pure damage and are best used in rapid combinations with each other, or at certain times- though pressing 1-2-3 to fight is minimally effective on all classes, it is especially so on ele.

Is it fun, though? Heck yes… at least in my opinion. I love being able to dive in and know I can adjust as needed, throw out skills and combinations on the fly. And even though it’s hard, it’s not impossible to learn- early levels are squishy, but things get much better once you have your traits in. The key is thinking creatively, and practicing a lot.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me here or in-game.

Falunel.7645

Profession forums tend to be full of whiners- take everything you read there with a grain of salt. Several, if possible.

My good friend plays a warrior and rocks the game with it- he’s soloed multiple high-level champions, killed three 80s solo in WvW, and trio’ed AC with myself (elementalist) and a thief friend, with a duo challenge planned. On the other hand, I’ve seen warriors who, to put it bluntly, just plain suck- they stand rock-still when fighting, don’t move out of AoEs or dodge, and get themselves and everyone around killed.

True, the class gets harder in the late levels, but it’s nothing skill can’t overcome.

Falunel.7645

WvW in Tarnished Coast is a bit whiny at the moment (we’ve moved up to T2 recently and had a number of bandwagoners and opportunists join along with the usual growing pains). However, the PvE community is still extremely friendly and mature- map chat can become questionable at times, especially in Queensdale, but many players will lend a hand or pause to have a conversation. I always find myself meeting great people.

The main issue with the server is getting on- it is nearly always full, but given that its population correlates with the number of people playing at the moment, you might have to check in at absurd hours of the morning for openings. Keep in mind that you’ll have to log out of the game and open it again to refresh the server window.

If you can’t get on, you can play on another server for now and try to transfer over, using the World Selection button in the lower-left corner. Note that server transfers are limited to once every seven days and will no longer be free after the 28th.

Edit: mercury poses a good point- I should mention that TC is a NA server.

When you die, be patient and wait for a bit!

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Falunel.7645

Falunel.7645

I would like to see a system like Zax suggested. To be honest, though, I will say that anyone who dies (fully dead, not downed) in an event/dungeon should WP and run back instead of relying on people to rez them. It takes a long time to raise a person from defeated and puts the rezzer(s) in danger, not just because of the increased aggro, but because it essentially roots you in place for a long time with no defenses. It’s especially troublesome for move-or-die classes like eles and thieves- personally, I no longer even try to rez people who are fully dead in events, though I will usually rez them after.

This is especially relevant in the harder events, namely the Temple of Balthazar. The boss hits harder for every dead person in the area, and already has a number of dangerous attacks that punish people for standing still and not paying attention. To top that off, he must be killed within a certain time limit, and has a large amount of health as well as veteran adds that heal him- hence, rezzing the dead takes away precious time. Too often, people who die in the event just lay around instead of WP’ing, which causes it to fail every time.

tl;dr there are times where defeated people shouldn’t wait to be rezzed.

General PvE help

Posted by: Falunel.7645

Falunel.7645

DEs do have stories and contexts, but to see them, you have to stick around and pay attention (and to be fairly blunt, Queensdale is terribly bland storywise- all you do is feed livestock, escort caravans to Beetletun, and kill bandits/bad things with four legs). For instance, in the Asura area, there’s an event in which you must defend an encampment of survivors from the Inquest, who will kidnap a number of people there. This leads into another event where you follow a rescue team through a series of underground tunnels and a hidden Asura gate into an Inquest lab. After you rescue everyone, the krewe will search the lab and discover a strange device that they will take back to the encampment, in the face of Inquest resistance, culminating in a battle with a mega-golem.

Also, you can have people stare at you in awe for having a purple weapon- get a legendary. I’ve had a large number of people whisper me to compliment my armor alone. Loot sucks right now as a low-level; in higher levels, you’ll have rares, expensive crafting materials, and even exotics drop for you.

And as for what you say about carebear attitudes and communism? I played a gear-heavy, stat progression game a while back, and a good many of the “elite” people there were all stats and no substance. I, firsthand, saw them backstab their own guildmates for a shot at a few more numbers and abandon their friends to chase after that pretty purple gear. I know at the very least that I won’t have to worry about their sort destroying my guild here, nor will I have to worry about pouring hundreds of hours and dollars into a game so I won’t get shafted by other people because of a number. Call it what you want, but you find your own way here, make your own reputation, create your own niche, and it’s all determined by your attitude, skills, and actions, not some gear crutch.

These forums generally reek of whining, to put it nicely. I don’t really visit any board except this one and the Announcements because of it.

The use of the word “show” makes me curious- will it just be a preview, or an actual addition? Seems to contradict other reports that they won’t be adding any new professions this update. Either way, pretty excited- thanks for linking. (Edit: Well, I’m stupid. Ignore me.)

Back to the original topic, if you’re going to PvP with your mesmer, you could go asura to screw with players who click to target. Lore-wise, charr engineer and asura mesmer are the best combinations, though you can come up with a story to explain any mix. Sylvari mesmers also exist in the lore (I believe Faolain is one). If you want to stand out, charr mesmers are very uncommon.

Overall, though, play what you feel will make you happiest.

I’m surprised no one here has mentioned thief. They are good at ranged and close combat.

They have very little raw survivability, though. Even tanky builds cannot stand and facetank like other classes.

Bad at timing, what class should I choose?

Ugh, completely missed the part where you said you played an ele. *is shamed

Not going to mince words- ele is horrible in the early levels, especially for new players. At endgame, played right and built right, you can laugh off virtually any situation, but early on, you lack the gear, traits, and utility to survive effectively.

Staff ele in particular is difficult for solo PvE, as it is primarily a group support weapon. Though the double dagger set places you closer to the enemy, you have higher damage to take them down faster and more control/evasive skills- consider looking into those. It is still by far not an easy class for beginners, so I recommend you come back to it after you’ve worked with another class.

Also, the community varies from server to server, I’ve found. Mine (Tarnished Coast) has its trolls, but an extremely nice community overall. People always lend a hand with events in the beginner area and often give advice to newcomers. You might want to consider transferring.

In my guild, at least, it’s the person who knows the dungeon best that leads, whether they be warrior or ele or thief. We haven’t had any issues. I’ve also led some Fractal and AC runs myself, as an ele, and things went well.

I don’t know who you’ll be running with, but if someone pushes the role of lead on you just because of your class, chances are they haven’t gotten the memo.

This is going to sound harsh, but you should keep practicing no matter what class you play. After a certain point in the game, not dodging will lock you out from content. You could play the toughest class with the tankiest build and the best defensive gear, but you will still die again and again against many of the bosses in the dungeons if you do not dodge.

Also, I played TF2 myself and got nailed by spies/crockets/etc all the time, yet here, after months of painful learning, I dodge well enough to stay alive. Don’t sell yourself short on the basis of other games.

If you run into DRs, Lyssa’s temple in Malchor’s Leap is a good change of pace if it’s contested. Keep moving from seal to seal.

If people show up who are trying to take the temple, though, be courteous and help them out. Don’t be like the people I saw who kittened at those trying to kill the boss because it messed with their farming.

Claiming Black Lion purchased costume items

in Players Helping Players

Falunel.7645

It should be account bound, not character. Additionally, you were looking at a GW1 Wiki, not the GW2 Wiki.

Hmmm….. I dont see a way to claim it on any other character, so I just went and bought my other girl what she needed too. I’m used to paying for something and it being available to everyone on my account, given sex differences of course, but that does not seem to be the case here. That seems rather punitive from an economic standpoint.

Its also looking like once I own a few costumes, I will have little room for drops – but oh well. What can ya do…. this probably has a few people facepalming by now, but as a new player I dont know all the ins and outs of this. I am used to having a bunch of costume slots and not having appearances inextricably tied to stats, this is all a rather bumpy road for the new. Because we have no way to find out about it in-game.

It’s account bound in that you can deposit the costume into your bank and have another character withdraw and wear it. This is assuming you’ve bought the town clothes and not the armor skins. (Edit: yeah, the pirate outfit can be deposited.)

Any cool/useful equipment around level 25?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Falunel.7645

When you hit level 35, you’ll have access to the explorable mode of the Ascalonian Catacombs dungeon. If you can find a good regular group and learn the dungeon well (thus resulting in faster runs with fewer deaths),

GOOD LUCK WITH THAT! lol

Ignore that advice and enjoy the game, open the Trading Post window and set the filters to show you gear for your level only, and just buy the best you can afford. You have to actually go to a Trading Post to pick up the gear but you can buy and sell from anywhere.

There’s nothing wrong with doing explorable modes on-level if you learn from it and find a group who will take you- namely, friends or guildmates. I’ve run with level 35s who struggled at first but did wonderfully after they picked things up, as well as level 80s who dropped every single time Kholer pulled and got us all killed in Path 2 by chasing after warriors instead of focusing fire on eles and necros. Yeah, they’re generally easier as a well-geared 80, but being able to pay attention and follow directions is far more important than gear or levels, at least in my view.

If your objection is to grinding dungeons at an early level, I had “regularly” in my post, but edited it out. I agree that it’s best to enjoy the game and not worry much about looks or level- if looking good makes the leveling process much more enjoyable, though, then that’s a workaround. If dungeons prove to be fun, then more power- if they’re a hassle, then the runner will have to decide whether it’s worth the effort or not. Do what makes the game fun for you.

selecting an class?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Falunel.7645

Falunel.7645

Hmm…

-All classes are capable of doing well in solo PvE.
-Each class can provide damage and utility, though some will lean more toward one end of the spectrum and will have different ways of doing so. You can have a healing shout warrior, for instance. And while a thief will mainly burst, a necro may focus more on conditions, and so on.
-Fun is subjective. I think elementalists are great fun, but they drive others batty. I get bored by warriors, but others like them.
-If you want long range, I’ll have to rule out guardians, sadly. Good class, but ranged fighting is their main weakness. Eles are great ranged support with staff, but the melee double daggers are preferred in solo content and they have difficulty changing from melee to ranged on the fly.
-Again, all classes can contribute in PvP, though in different ways. An engineer would most likely run support in group battles, whereas thieves and D/D eles would more likely be roamers. (Of course, the OP class is always the one you don’t play.)

If you’re new, I would recommend playing a ranger or warrior to learn the basics of combat, as they’re the easiest to pick up and the most forgiving for newcomers.

When you hit level 35, you’ll have access to the explorable mode of the Ascalonian Catacombs dungeon. If you can find a good regular group and learn the dungeon well (thus resulting in faster runs with fewer deaths), you’ll make a lot of gold (if you want to buy higher-level armor- be aware that level 80 gear requires fine trans stones) and gain a lot of levels by running it.

Dungeons in GW2 are a different flavor than in most MMOs, though, and can be tough on newcomers. Skill and coordination matter a lot, and no amount of gear will save a disorganized group. Start with AC story mode (level 30) first to learn the basics, and, as stated earlier, find a good group or cross your fingers when PUGing.
