Look into crafted pieces (on the Trading Post). There might be some more variety there.
Overall, though, you are stuck until the late levels when it comes to looks. Once you have one character that’s 80, though, you can find gear you like, get it with your 80, and pass it down to alts with transmutation stones (the basic ones can be farmed by making an alt, completing an easy city, depositing the stones, deleting the alt, and repeating the process). And if it means anything, the leveling curve will be constant from here on out- the time it takes to go 79-80 is the same as 20-21.
Trading Post.
Also, here’s a listing of all the stat combinations and where to get them: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Item_nomenclature
If it counts any, I made a conditionmancy necro about a month ago. Played him to 30, and he was incredibly survivable compared to ele and mesmer at the same level. I was able to solo my personal story five levels above me and wander in areas where I shouldn’t have gone by sticking conditions and slows on mobs and kiting them around until they died. The class has one of the highest HP pools, and Death Shroud on top of that. Cloth is not always squishy here.
However, this was with a scepter/dagger and staff build. As I said prior, I have no experience with D/D or 30+ necro.
This is going to sound mean, but how much do you dodge and move around? Do you make use of blocks, blinds, etc? Do you avoid hostile AoE (red circles)?
There are some portions of CoF where having the best gear in the world won’t save you if you aren’t mobile.
Event chain farming: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYEP5ze9Kwo
But if this is your first character, I highly recommend you take it slow. GW2 isn’t about rushing to the end, and doing so will only burn you out and leave you clueless at 80. Take your time, explore, and enjoy the process. (EDIT: Well, I’ve seen you around the forums, so this isn’t your first character. But I’ll leave the warning here for any newcomers who read this.)
Tarnished Coast is still the best! (Subjective)
I also play on Tarnished Coast and love my server very much. Queensdale map chat gets questionable at times, but overall it’s a very active and friendly place. I mainly tag around Queens and Caledon, but have always seen other players in all the starting zones. It’s also the unofficial RP server, but RP is neither required nor enforced.
I don’t know much about D/D necro, but I know firsthand and from others in my guild that guardian is extremely weak at range. Also, necro is a condition-heavy, damage-over-time class while guardian is angled toward support (but can be built for damage).
Malchor’s Leap (mid region of Orr), at either the area near the entrance of Cursed Shore or Lyssa’s temple.
crafting your own armor or simply getting karma armor from heart vendors will suffice all the way to 80
I was told not to use my karma until 80 because of how expensive it was that I needed to have enough by reaching 80…
If you’ve already decided on what stats you want, these are the stats available on the exotic karma pieces: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Equipment_acquisition_by_stats#Karma
These are all the possible stat sets, and where you can find them: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Prefix
I believe condition damage is a numerical value, not a percentage. They may have been referring to condition duration.
The people who blaze to 80 in a matter of days are the people who get burned out and whine about there being no content, when in fact, by powerleveling, they blew by it all. Or they’re the people who don’t learn their class and get wiped over and over, and choose to blame the game.
If this is your first character, take your time. Explore the world, find events, and learn how to play your class. Find friends to level with. The leveling process is part of the endgame in GW2.
If you’ve already explored the game and already have a character at 80, then yeah, crafting, when done properly, is the fastest way of leveling. Look up some guides and be prepared to spend a lot of gold.
I believe it is the pit fighter set (heavy armor) with Heavenly Bracers. The Bracers can only be gotten if you played GW1.
Charr can most definitely be light armor. What kind of playstyle do you prefer- support or direct damage? Tanky? Healy?
i just needed to know which route i should take to upgrade my gear?
At 60 the correct answer is the cheapest one available.
This. You can go on masterworks until level 80, at which point you can start looking into rares and exotics.
It depends on how often you’ll be running WvW. My FPS is below 30 the vast majority of the time, and below 20 in cities, but I do fine.
That explains things- I don’t have any agony resist. I also have no idea how that works, sorry…
I just repaired four damaged pieces and saw no difference. When did this happen?
Go to the character selection screen. There should be a button in the lower left corner called “World Selection.”
Oh, I thought that was just to start characters on another server, not actually transfer. Thanks!
Yeah, you can have characters on only one server- otherwise, all sorts of issues happen with WvW and things being account bound.
Glad to help!
Go to the character selection screen. There should be a button in the lower left corner called “World Selection.”
If a server is full, you can still play on it if it’s your home server. You just cannot transfer onto it.
I transferred to Tarnished Coast some months back and have been extremely happy with my choice. I always see people around and most are very friendly- I’ve found friends by grouping up with people at random or answering questions in map chat. It’s full nearly 24/7, though.
Server population varies according to the number of people currently playing. Check in at absurd off-peak times, like the wee hours of the morning, and the population may drop to High.
For now, you can pick another server and play there. You will still be able to talk to your friends, be in guilds with them, and party with them for dungeons. Server transfers are free right now (though limited to once every seven days).
Water Attunement is probably the best healing capability in the game, which would be on an Elementalist, and the Devout armor set should get the look pretty well. It can be bought from a vendor in the bottom floor of the cube in Rata Sum.
As a level 80 ele, I will strongly warn against making an ele based purely around healing and water attunement. The class isn’t meant to be a true healer, but a jack-of-all-trades that makes use of all four elements.
There is no devoted healing class in GW2- there are classes that are healing-capable, but none can outheal the damage dealt by a boss or even trash mobs in dungeons. Your best bet for defensive support would be a guardian, though they’re a heavy armor melee class.
And, if you want both stats and looks, you can get away with getting a set of armour with good stats and use transmutation stones if you don’t like how it looks. Keep in mind that Rare and Exotic armours from dungeons look the same, so you can get away with getting a set of Rare armour and transmuting that if you want the looks but not the stats.
Doesn’t work this way, unfortunately. The Rare sets are a different skin altogether.
Really? That’s interesting – have you any links to any galleries that show the differences between both for each set?
When I previewed each set, they appeared differently.
My other issue is have only 3 transmutation stones left and i have pretty much 100% maps complete, just missing major cities and wvwvwv. And no im not buying gems for keys or stones…
Which stones, the basic or fine ones?
If you’re missing the basic ones, make an alt, complete the Grove/Divinity’s Reach/whichever city is easy for you, move the stones to your bank, delete the alt, and repeat. You should have an infinite supply this way.
If it’s the fine ones, convert gold to gems and buy them from the store. You can usually get a good amount of gold through dungeoning or Orr farming.
For your gear, look here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Prefix

All characters you make are bound to one server. However, you are currently able to transfer servers once every seven days for free, and you can talk to people from other servers and party with them for dungeons (assuming their server is in the same region as yours- US or Europe/EU).
No, you must download the entire game, as it is still in its vanilla (no expansions) stage.
Hmm, could you give some details on your preferred playstyle? What bored you about warrior and the other classes? What kind of role do you like to play?
Also, a lot of classes are unimpressive in the early levels (especially ele and mesmer), especially when coming from a full level 80.
What level are you? You are able to enter WvW anytime and are scaled up to 80, true, but true level 80s will have an advantage in gear, traits, and, most importantly, experience.
Also, a large part of doing well in WvW is getting over the shakes. It could be that you’re okay with the class in PvE, but freeze up or go blank in PvP. If you don’t want to spend money on repairs, go to sPvP and throw yourself into random matches over and over. Whether you win or how many times you die is not important- the important part is being desensitized to fighting other players (and the prospect of being beaten). You’ll also start picking up on some of the habits and tricks people use.
Finally, in PvE, solo champions or difficult areas (the maze skillpoint in Cursed Shore, for example). Run dungeons often and pay attention to what you can bring to the table. Train yourself to play actively and plan out your attacks instead of pressing 1-2-3 to deal damage. Fighting the AI isn’t the same as fighting an actual person, but even if you get beaten horribly, you’ll figure out some tricks and creative ways to stay alive and deal out damage that you can apply to PvP.
Firstly, I solo a lot of general PvE content (namely Orr) and do well in dungeons in rares and masterworks. So while higher-tier gear will help, it will not be the end-all-be-all.
If you’re going after full exotics, I would recommend first deciding on what stats you want. Some stats are only available on crafted exotics, which you must either make yourself or buy. Others are available on only dungeon gear, or only karma gear. Give the wiki a glance-over.
I’m not very knowledgeable on Ascended items, but the difference is very small- single digits. Again, it might give you just the tiniest edge over an equally skilled player in WvW, but otherwise you won’t be crippled in general PvE content (unless you do the higher levels of FotM, in which case Agony Resist will be useful). Overall, grind only if you want to do.
There is a way out… go to the deck near the end of the ship and check the console in the corner.
If you can’t find it, tell me your character’s name and I’ll party you and lead you out.
ok im mostly looking forward to my legendarys do I have to wait till I each 80?
Well, you could start working on it now, but there’s no way you’ll get it done before 80 unless you buy over a thousand dollars in gold… in all honestly, I would focus on getting to 80 and learning the game before considering a legendary.
Crafting. Which requires gold.
But if this is your first character, I highly recommend you take it slow. There are no healers and tanks to work for you here- you will need to learn how to dodge, kite, block, etc in order to survive.
EDIT: Also, even if you don’t mind, the rest of your group will. I know a number of players who will eventually refuse to rez someone who keeps going down, and have heard of others who outright kick. Rezzing someone in a dungeon puts you in great danger.

Ah, thanks. That sounds like a guardian, to me. They have one of the lowest health pools in the game, but also wear heavy armor and have a lot of active defense abilities- healing, projectile reflection, and protective buffs alongside the universal dodge. They’re a strong support class, but a frontline one that can be built to do a decent amount of damage. Finally, they combine physical melee attacks with magical effects and spells, especially blue fire. Lots of blue fire.
Hmm, may I ask what you mean exactly by hybrid classes? Hybrid damage/healing, or magic/physical, or midranged attackers? Sorry, I’m not very familiar with Everquest and Warhammer.
And welcome to Tyria!
At level 80 Elementalists are an important part of setting up combo fields. The problem with the elementalist (despite what ANet claims) is that they are a part of the holy trinity in a game without a holy trinity. They are a high damage, low survivability class. And since ANet only really succeeded in eliminating the healing classes from the holy trinity, elementalists die a lot. Fortunately, that’s mostly only a problem during the leveling process. It just gives people the perception that the elementalist isn’t any good. When an elementalist can stand back and nuke as part of a group (which is often at level 80) they do very well.
Going to object to the “low survivability” part. Not going to rewrite all the boasts in my earlier post, but eles do not necessarily have to stay out of the frontlines in order to survive; we can be extremely tanky if we build for it, namely through self-heals, cantrips, kiting, and permavigor/swiftness/protection, and we can solo a good amount of content. We can provide support through AoE damage and fields, but that is by no means all an ele can do.
You can, by converting gems to gold in the same tab used to convert gold to gems, but gold isn’t very important early on. You can make enough money to cover your needs by selling the crafting materials that drop from enemies. In lategame, you can farm Orr (the endzone) or run dungeons for money.
I haven’t played thief in-depth yet, but I’ve found stealth to be useful for escape as a mesmer, especially with several clones/phantasms up. Upon stealthing, mobs would often move to attack my clones instead and would stay on them even after I destealthed. From there, I could either make a run for it, heal uninterrupted, or throw more spells at them from a distance.
Also, don’t underestimate the distance you can cover in three seconds. Even with no clones up, I’ve been able to get away from vets and champs in that small window of time.
There are multiple ways to gear up. I personally am still in rares/masterworks I purchased and doing fine, so don’t feel crippled by not having access to full exotics.
If you want exotics without the gold cost, run AC explorable over and over (or rather, each path once a day) for dungeon tokens and trade them in for the exotics you want at the trader in Fort Marriner at Lion’s Arch. Or grind for karma via Orr (Plinx or Lyssa event chains) and buy exotic armor from the karma merchants at the temples. Be aware that with both ways, you may be limited on the types of stat sets you can receive, and that you may have to deal with temples/Arah being contested with the karma route (as each merchant offers different stat sets).
When in-game (past the character selection screen), click the button that looks like a lion in the bar in the upper-left corner of your screen. Then select the top tab to be brought to the Gem Store.
You can purchase gems (with real-world money) by clicking a button beneath the box that shows your current amount of gems. You can convert gold to gems in a separate tab of the window.
Yes, this would be where you purchase additional character slots. It should be in the Upgrades tab of the store.
There should be a button in the bottom-left corner of the character selection screen labeled “World Selection” or the like. It will bring you to a list of servers- choose the one you want to transfer to, then choose to transfer. Note that transfers right now are free but limited to once every seven days.
Also, if the server you want to transfer onto is currently full, wait until off-peak hours and its population may drop to high, allowing you to get in. My friend and I went through the process when transferring to Tarnished Coast.
so whats the point on getting 2 axes ?
i rly dont get it … i mean they are 2 different runes …
Two axes handle differently than a greatsword. It’s not all about damage- some prefer the playstyle.
Also, there are a good range of sigils you can use, not only the stackable ones. For instance, I also use two weapons (double dagger ele) and use a Superior Sigil of Accuracy (adds 5% crit chance) with a Superior Sigil of Battle (adds 3 stacks of might on weapon swap, or in the ele’s case, attunement swap). Since my build is heavy on crit rate, I also carry daggers with sigils that inflict freezing or strip conditions on crit. My warrior guildmate uses a Superior Sigil of Fire (30% chance to create an AoE fire blast on crit) and a Superior Sigil of Bloodlust on his axe and warhorn, and carries a shield with a sigil that gives him back 50% of his endurance on weapon swap. There are a lot of choices.
(edited by Falunel.7645)
Invisibility/stealth can be applied to any role you can make them apply to. Thinking creatively and trying things out is very important in GW2’s combat system.
From what I’ve seen, mesmer and thief are the only two classes that can stealth, or at least are the main two classes. I’ve also heard of builds for the thief that allow near-perpetual stealthing, so you may want to look for those in the Thief forum. There is also a consumable, any-class item that can be bought from a heart vendor in the Plains of Ashford for the low cost of 24 karma- the Ash Legion Spy Kit, which gives you ten seconds of invisibility when holding still (less if you move) and has no cooldown. It cannot be used in sPvP or WvW, however.
Also, a good number of classes have abilities that allow them to quickly enter/escape combat. Warriors have two skills on the greatsword that move them around quickly, mesmers have some teleports and a skill on focus, and double dagger elementalists have Burning Speed, Ride the Lightning, Updraft, Magnetic Grasp, and can add Mist Form or Lightning Flash to the mix. I myself play a D/D ele and have few issues exploring as long as I stay aware of my surroundings.
Overall, I wish you the best of luck. Welcome to Tyria!
They go to the sPvP locker, located off to the side in the sPvP lobby. All sPvP gear you get will be placed there upon selecting “Deposit Collectible”/“Deposit All Collectibles.”
As long as you play a Sylvari, the first part of the storyline will remain in Caledon Forest.
I believe the Contract was an Open Beta item, and is no longer available.
Level 80 D/D ele here. I soloed Cursed Shore map completion in rares and masterworks and still run Orr alone on a regular basis with few issues. I have also soloed champions and event bosses and tanked dungeon bosses.
I have a guildmate and good friend who plays a level 80 D/D ele, and he also says that very little can kill the class when it has a mind to survive. It should be noted that his main is a warrior.
Elementalists are extremely vulnerable and difficult early on, I will say that. And they do take a lot of effort. But as blunt and harsh as it sounds, most complaints about the class being weak are from people who, instead of learning to play or rerolling, chose to blame the class.
Yes, you can level in the human area. There should be an Asura gate in the Grove (the Sylvari city), marked on the map with a purple swirl. Passing through that will bring you to Lion’s Arch, the hub city. From there, head through the gate guarded by the Seraph to arrive at the human city.
You will still be playing the Sylvari storyline, however. Note that the specific quests may change if you picked different biographical options during character creation- in the end, though, you will still be playing the Sylvari story.
