I dont know what counters them. Most mesmers will probably tell you that you must learn to play and that mesmers are designed to be DUELERS (that means, designed to destroy everyone in duels, yeah). I dont know, maybe a zerker thief if the mesmer is a glass canon build, but the problem is, most of them are not anymore. Honestly, when I see a mesmer is going 1v1 with me, I just run away. Call me a coward or whatever you want but I conluced that to be the most sensible choice.
PS. I also run away from thieves in WvW. Other than that, anything is a fair game.
Coming from someone who started this game as a Mesmer and now changing over to a thief, I can tell you, once you understand how most Mesmers play in WvW, they are fairly predictable. Typically, I try to stick in close using my D/P build and dagger storm. I’ve found that by using this weapon set combined with the blind spam, they aren’t too much of a problem. Of course, this all changes if the Mesmer is skilled but generally speaking, I find them easy to counter on my Thief. On my Ele, well I just get destroyed.

When I created this thread I suppose I didn’t fully understand how much change had been brought upon the class and with that limited knowledge, it was still fun to play. I have to admit now, that my once favorite character is only used now as a crafting/bank alt and that’s about it. I can deal with most of the nerf’s but the RTL just kills the class for me.
I’ve now gone back and started toying around my with Thief and Mesmer alt but I’m not honestly sure where to go from here. The D/D Ele was WHY I played GW2 as I just loved the quick mobility of the class. Without it, I now understand where you all come from.
I got tired of another MMO and was pondering about returning back to GW2 (I was in since open beta).
I left GW2 because the one class I wanted to play, Ele, left a lukewarm feeling. “Not too bad but not what I wanted”. So low damage and health, it looked like it was this MMO “predetestined prey” of everyone else. I have played mages since a many years (including WoW and Warhammer, someone mentioned it, I played and still play Sorceress), they usually come in a “glass cannon” spec that is really a cannon and with a “tanky” spec with lots of crowd control.
Now in GW2 forget the glass cannon, even going all out fire, other classes still outmatch you. The alternative is bunker but it’s not an interesting defensive spec with lots of tricks, it’s just an outlasting, self healing brick.
Now I came back to see if ANET did something to make the gameplay more interesting, and I read of this.
Sod off, I will keep playing another MMO, even if it’s sub based.
It’s sad because I spent a good bit of time making my Ele the exact way I wanted the character to include the fine details of her appearance. Now, she’s just standing around LA doing little more than making crap to sell. W/O the mobitilty, the class isn’t fun to play anymore.
So now I run around WvW on my equally geared Thief looking for those slow moving D/D Ele’s to take down as I know they have no chance to get away from me.

Pretty much anything I want to put there. Seriously, I could put in mantra of pain, charge it, and then it casts the exact same time as I cast confusing images. For PvE though, I’ve just been using feedback.

It’s strange… I use the GS as my “main” weapon and that doesn’t happen. When I change over to the S/F as my secondary set, the #3 and #9 skills are locked together. It’s a pain as when I try to cast one my clones on the target, my other skill activates at the same time. If I was trying to, this could easily be an exploit.

Yeah, my Mesmer is at 80 and I think I just accidentally clicked something that locked the #9 skill so that it casts automatically when I use #3. I’m on the road right now but when I get a chance this evening, I’ll drop up a screen shot so you can see it.

I’m pretty sure Yishis could pull off stuff like that with any profession. Notice how much attention he gives to choosing his target, knowing where the enemy is, and when he’s in over his head. He’s way better then an average player and in his vids he’s commonly picking the easiest targets he can and working his way up. Notice how knows he can’t pull the stunts he pulls against seasoned players.
It creates a very skewed image when you pit a pro like that against a bunch of lowbies and call that an accurate scale of balance.
/agreed. Yishis is an extraordinary player on many levels, and I am lucky enough to play with him. No matter what he does with a thief, if he records it and puts it on youtube people are going to cry nerf.
How about people stop using Yishis’s videos as an example, and instead record their own experience on video? I bet there is a good answer for that…
When I got sick of the RTL changes to my beloved D/D Ele, Yishis’s videos became the inspiration for me to go back and level my Thief to 80. Now that my thief is fairly well geared and I have a basic understanding of the class, I’ve found that so much is based upon player skill and not that the thief is as OP as I once thought. Yes, I can do some amazing damage to another target but it’s based upon them making mistakes. Often, I find that I’m in over my head and so I just stealth and run away.

Folks, for some strange reason my # 9 skill has this faded “lock” icon above it and so when I use my # 3 skill, it always auto-casts! This is really a huge pain and for the life of me, I’ve not a clue how this happened. What’s even worse is that it only does this on my Mesmer and not my other characters. Did I screw something up in the UI settings or something? I restored them back to the default but yet, it still has this lock icon above it.
What did I do?

Thanks for the help! I really enjoy the D/D but it’s somewhat of a pain at times. I’m still learning how to correctly use shadowstep as I leveled as a condition Thief and never had much use for it.

I’ve been playing around with a few builds as I just hit 80 and wasn’t really sure what works best for WvW and my style. I was going with a D/D 0/30/30/10 build that appears rather popular but really liked the distance closer of the D/P. As I tend to go for the solo “assassin” and often take on more than 1 person at a time, does this build below look effective?
I’m really trying to figure out if the D/D is better overall than the D/P.
I play the 0/30/30/10 build as well but I use all Valkyrie gear with zerker weapons, rings, etc. I find that the Valk set provides me a good bit of health (16K) while still dealing the damage needed to take down my targets quickly. Still, it’s all about what YOU want to do. For this class, I don’t think there is any “right” or “wrong” way to play.

I apologize for my noob question but I just hit 80 on my thief and was wondering, where do I get the skins for the conquest armor set? The information on the wiki page below isn’t much help.
That’s a good point about the backpieces, rings and accessories. As for gold, I’m running with about 26 on the character from some lucky items I’ve found/sold. Sadly, I’ve dumped a good bit into my crafting skills as I’m a bit OCD in that area.

Folks, I was wondering if you all could help me for a moment when it comes to karma armor we can purchase from the Temples. I was reading over dulfy.net about what is available and I thought we could purchase sets with +power, vitality, crit% but I didn’t see anything like this listed. I’m about to hit level 70 and I currently have over 150K karma that I had hoped to use to get my initial level 80 exotic gear. Is there someplace in the game where I can find the gear I need with these stats that uses karma? If not, what would you all suggest?
For reference, I play a D/D + SB Teef ankittenrying to focus on my survivability while still putting out decent crit damage.

Impressive video. I’ve heard people trash on the P/D condition build but it’s pretty darn nasty. I’m only level 67 right now but was able to take down a really terrible mesmer the other night doing this.

If you just bought level 40 gear/weapons I would wait to switch over.
Condition builds worked very nicely for leveling. I am able to tag many mobs at once for extra loot and EXP. So, I would wait until level 80 to switch.
Thanks Cynder! It felt so far that conditions are a great/quick way to level though I have to admit that it’s not really the style of play I want with this character. Still, after leveling 2 other characters to 80 to only find out I now only play them for specific situations, it will be nice to have a character I can stick with.

I have been leveling a thief after I got sick of my original main character and have been using a D/D + SB condition build for just about everything I do. I’m about to hit 40 now and plan to change over to D/P burst for WvW when I get higher in level. Should I just change over now for doing dungeons and for leveling?

I run a similar build on my Mesmer though I often change over to the S/P when I just want to explode a target. However, I only use zerker items for my weapons and chest armor. Other than this, I run a full knight’s set in order to avoid the “glass” side of the build. So far, I’ve gone solo against a D/D Ele and another GS Mesmer. The Ele died in a matter of seconds and the battle with the other Mesmer went with us both winning 1 match. In either case, it’s pretty fun and even makes PvE more interesting.

They are very easy to play. Greatsword is just faceroll in hotjoin. gs + staff combo makes you a god of kiting. nothing touches that other than a thief or another mesmer
I play a defensive D/D Ele and don’t have much trouble with the normal GS/Staff Mesmers. Now, some of the other builds can be a real pain when they wait for me to get in close.

Your video on how to defeat a D/D Ele is outstanding! I play a D/D Ele as my main after I got bored with my Mesmer but this makes me reconsider how I was playing. My Ele is very defensive which makes me wonder what build/gear she was using.
Anyways, I was wondering how well you do in a dual against those pesky D/D or D/P Thieves. They remain the largest pain in my back (no pun intended).

I have been looking for something that balances more with PvE and WvW so I’ll give this a shot and see if I like it. I was wondering though, with my set of mostly “knights” gear combined with a few zerker items, will this build work well enough that I won’t have to change gear around… again?

Just wondering, is there a viable PvE build that I can use with my D/D Ele? I made this character back when nobody played the class all that much and so the only weapon choice I have ever really worked on is the D/D build. However, my current build is designed for WvW and I use mostly “knights” type of gear.
From what I’ve seen, most folks want me to change over to my Mesmer (which I hate…) and really don’t like me playing on a D/D for dungeons.

Just wondering, is there a build out there that is viable in both WvW and PvE? I currently am using a D/D + P/P condition build mainly because it’s just a ton of fun. It pretty much sucks for WvW though as most people aren’t dumb enough to walk through my caltrops.
Still, it seams like unless you’re a Warrior, Guardian or Mesmer, people don’t much desire you in dungeons.
Anything you all can suggest?

First, I’m not trying to troll anyone but I often come to the forums seeking advice on how to play my class(s) and it just feels like they are all full of “gloom and doom.” After spending 30 minutes reading these threads, a new player would probably walk away thinking that an Ele can be tanked by a bunny, that ranger pets can 1-shot us, and that the Anet devs personally hate our class so much that it was only invented as a way for them to torment the world.
Seriously folks, yeah, my Ele can’t fly around the world like I’m used too but she’s still a ton of fun to play. Even with my crap gear, I find that I can generally hold my ground against most people. As for zergs, I continue to troll them like always and then just pray I can get away quick enough.
Anyways, sorry about this rant but to me, the game is still fun and I find something new to learn about my class every time I login.

Ok, I fist understand that as a Guardian, I’m not a “roaming” class but that comes from too much time as my Ele…
I was wondering though, am I the only person that finds thieves to be a real pain in the butt as a Guardian? The normal D/D or condition thieves aren’t an issue but those D/P ones that stack blind just seem impossible. When I do get one down, he just uses permastealth and then I loose him. For gear, I’m going with mostly a set of knight’s armor rolled with zerker weapons so I’m not following the normal burst concept and trying more for survival.
Do I just really suck or are they just our nemesis? I rolled this alt as I was hoping to find something like my old pally from WoW. She’s a beast in PvE but sometimes I feel I’m lost in WvW.

That was a great video! I was roaming in WvW the other night looking for some soft targets to take out and ran into a few folks dueling. Instead of attacking (like most do), I asked if my teammate needed help just to make sure it was a duel or not.
It ticks me off when I have a great 1v1 going against someone and then some scrub runs into the fight.
Oh, and for the Guardians? Try playing a bunker Ele and going up against a bunker Guardian. Now that is a long, boring fight.

Just a few questions for someone who has never really given the Ranger much of a chance….
I have spent most of my time in GW2 as a D/D Ele and though I love the class, the Ranger has been the one thorn in my side. I don’t care what others might say, Rangers still worry me if they know what they are doing. With that being said, how well do you do against those D/D Ele’s? I run a 0/10/0/30/30 build using a combo of berserker, knight, and valk gear.
Also, you said it took you 30 hours to level to 80, can I ask for your guidance on how you were able to do this and if you have some general leveling tips? I’ve been looking for a fun alt to play and so far I’ve leveled up a Guardian, Thief, Warrior, and Mesmer all to about level 30+. They now don’t ever get played anymore… lol.

Probably got a little off track but I wanted to give some detailed feedback.
No, I greatly appreciate any detailed feedback you can provide. I typically only like to play 1 character though I’ll toy around with an alt or two. My perspective is that I try to learn everything I can about the class I’ve chosen so right now, I’m just trying to figure this out more.
On those Zerg runs where you’re defending a tower, wall, etc, do you all change over to the staff to provide more support and ranged attacks? I played around with the S/F and just didn’t care for it.

Mithfir, being as you have an 80 in just about every class, from your perspective, is the D/D Ele a solid soloist? What I mean is that I really enjoy running around WvW with just myself or perhaps 1 other person. It was fun to just annoy the hell out of groups or taking down the few folks behind a zerg that can’t keep up with the group.

Thanks folks, this helps a great deal. I loved the style of the D/D Ele and just hated the idea of dumping more time into finding another class to play now that I just hit 80. I suppose it’s like any MMO that once you hit “end-game,” you have a learning curve that must be overcome.

3k seems pretty low, I usually see 7k’s without food, stones or bloodlust and only a few stacks of might
May I ask what spec/gear you are running with? Granted, I have only 1 exotic item right now so that’s probably why my stats suck. Also, most of my items were when I was playing a bunker build so I’m sure that’s drawing down my damage a great deal too.
How do you deal with those pesky Teefs though? I always had the most trouble with them and the GS/SB Rangers. Again, I’m a brand spanking new 80 so it’s a HUGE change from PvE over to how things are done in WvW.
On the bright side, I did have a great duel with a Guardian that after several minutes, we just went our own ways as neither of us could kill the other.

Folks, I know I’ve made several posts about classes but I apologize as I really don’t have a great deal of knowledge of “end-game” mechanics so I look to you all for advice.
I rolled my D/D Ele awhile back as it was suggested by a friend as fun, fast-paced style/class to play. I personally loved the class up to 80 and just started WvW before the RTL nerf hit. Now, I’m not sure if it’s worth playing anymore as I can’t really run away from much of anything. To fix this, I’ve changed up some of my traits so that I end up with a +35% movement speed. Still, I don’t feel like I’m much of a threat. For gear, I use the “Knight’s” set with Beserker weapons. My highest crit is about 3.4K. I do fairly well in PvE though my heart is more on WvW.
With all these changes, is it worth my time to continue working on this character and getting a full set of exotics? I have a level 31 Guardian and Thief which I considered going back to as I really enjoy roaming through WvW and looking for 1vX battles.
It took me a good bit of time to hit level 80 on this Ele and I had hoped to make it my main character. Now though, I’m not sure if we’re all that viable anymore and if I should just go back to the Thief or the Guardian.
What do you all think?

Next patch: Due to all Elementalists killing bunnies just to cross a map at the same speed as every other class, all skills will be turned permanently into town clothes skills for 60 seconds when you enter combat & you will be in the disguise of a carrot.
I read an article somewhere that PETA has submitted a complaint to Anet for all the unnecessary slaughter of defenseless bunnies, birds, rats, etc which roam freely across the GW2 world.
On a serious note, I parked my Ele and rolled a Thief. Now I hunt Ele’s in WvW… “Run away little Ele, run away – oh, wait, I forgot, you can’t run from anything anymore.”
