I can’t control my pet.I might try explaining to you why your statement “play thief or warrior if you want dmg from yourself” is stupid, but it would be a waste of my time. Logic is not for everyone. Even simple statements may be hard to understand for some ppl.
Awesome ranger can you explain to me then how to play a ranger in tpvp? I bet this is not going to happen. Or maybe how to avoid having an unfair advantage for having an AI controlled npc at my side?

Ranger lb is not that bad, it’s not a weapon related problem. Power builds for rangers are usually not as good as the condi ones. This is the first problem. The second one is, as a ranger, you are pretty much forced to spec 30 point in ws to get empathic bond.
I play sometimes a lb/gs zerker spec but in a game like gw2, where spamming things works too well currently, that’s not really viable. A spec like that requires too sophisticated gameplay…a spirit ranger is way easier to play and way more effective.

I play ranger since release. I’m not against having a pet BUT the pet mechanic was simply badly implemented. Fix it or change it. Also i’m tired of playing with or against AI controlled things in s/tpvp.

I like the armor choice, but tbh i hate shades of black on rangers. I see many human rangers wearing black t3 culturals (an armor clearly designed for thieves), and they look bad. Use natural colours on your armor m8, they are perfect for rangers.

They did ruin the Ranger class. Plain and simple. I won’t get deep into my opinions because I’ve already made tons of suggestions this past year that have been ignored because of this ideal they have in their head about pets when, as cool as that idea may be, just is not practical.
Oh yea i remember the detailed post you wrote full of good suggestions. It’s so sad you put lots of time into writing that and not a single dev answered. They could have said at least “thanks for your suggestions, we will take that into consideration”.
Ehm….the first part of the OP is a copy/paste of one of my posts in another topic. But np. Tbh i gave up, i suppose some of the devs have realized how bad they designed the ranger class in this game. Oh my miss my gw1 ranger soooo much. The only good thing they added in gw2 are bowstrings lol.
The pet only works really in 1 area, that’s spvp…
Why? Because:-
1) There are only enemy players for your pet too attack, nothing else, so it can’t go wrong.
2) Its a balanced setting, which means damage is balanced so your pet can tank, especially as you can pet swap.Those 2 things don’t exist in PvE and WvW, where your pet just gets blown away by any serious damage and often get distracted by any passing moa, wolf or just about anything really…
Mmm depends on what you mean for “working well”. I’ve a lot of experience in spvp as a ranger. Well yea i think pets are somehow balanced there atm, but still pet mechanic in this game sucks. I consider having my pet in spvp a big advantage tbh. Lol i remember before pets nerf i could just stand on a point and send my raven all over the map, and lol i could see that little kitten critting like a baws. Good old times.
My bad i didn’t mean they are useless, actually they are REALLY useful (some of them), but, at least in tpvp against good players, most of the times they are not fast enough. They are situational.
spamming your pet skills is in fact a bad idea. you might interrupt their abilities and literally cripple them.
when using an f2 make sure your pet is in range already, otherwise it has to walk a great distance before actually doing anything.
after pressing f2, leave your pet be for a few seconds to not cancle the ability
You can’t spam pet skills, since they have a cd, what i meant is in a game where everyone is spamming aoe condis on small points, pet f2 skills make me smile. It’s like the devs wanted to add some counterplay in the game (lol ofc they did) but they failed miserably, since atm spamming is the best option.
And really, if you’re too lazy to use your pet (f1,f2,f3,f4 are all pretty straight forward and easy to use) then just get 2 ranged pets and swap them out constantly.. Try spiders.. poison truly is a kitten.
Not really, most f2 skills are still pretty unresponsive (they used to be worse, hard to believe but it’s true), they are just a pathetic effort to force us to “micromanage” our pets. Pets abilities are there only cos they look cool and, sometimes, they work when needed. There’s no place in this game for “micromanagement” kitten. Spamming things in gw2 has pretty much never a negative impact.
The thing is all of those things are still fairly easy to counter. Back in the day of the BM builds, I simply bursted down the panther or whatever cat the guy was using, and he then was screwed. Most of them never even had a backup pet to use in the event of this. Phantasms are easily dodgeable. When you see them running towards you, press V. And thieves guild is a joke, they are so easily killed, and the thief usually goes invisible right after spawning them, which gives you enough time to deal with it.
-You faced terrible bm rangers then, sry. Not many classes were able to “burst a pet down”, expecially if the ranger was using double raven.
-Phanstasm mesmers can be countered by some classes and some specs, this doesn’t mean phantasms spam builds are not poorly designed. Also you seem to confuse phantasms with clones and shatters. In a non-1v1 fight phanstams are really hard to dodge with so many animations around, also some of them, like the duelist, don’t really move towards you.
-Thieves guild can be really strong 1v1. Probably not op, still a terrible designed skill. Ofc you can counter the argument saying “but most thieves are bad and they just spam hs”. Sadly this does not prove anything, since a really good s/d thief using tg is really really hard to beat.

I lol @ you thinking rangers(and their pets) are underpowered.
I don’t mean to sound arrogant, but I’d be hard pressed to find a 1v1 fight I’ll lose.
Pets can be op or totally useless. It’s just a bad class mechanic, just like phanstams for mesmers or thieves guild elite for thieves…different examples of stupidly designed things. As a regen bm ranger i used to be able to kill pretty much everyone 1v1 while spamming random buttons and evades. Clearly a good balanced and skill-based game. A mesmer can do exactly the same…“let’s summon my phantasms while i’m spamming spatial surge and invis like a baws”. Oh and the thief “oh kitten i suck i’m loosing the fight let’s summon 2 npcs to help me”.
What i really hate is the devs have never said “oh yea sorry guys we know we implemented too many AI-based things in this game but now it’s too late to fix this, we are doing our best tho”. They keep saying “no sorry we are not going to do this/that cos it’s against our class philosophy”. Class philosophy my kitten .
Rangers are a pet class if you picked this class without knowing that then you probably picked the wrong class. If ranger received a buff for not having a pet it would force players who specifically pick the class for their pets to play without pets or be kicked from groups.
Anet has already said they have not intention of adding perma stow. This may change but I would stop playing the class is they did (probably game as well).

Most players chose the ranger cos they like the class style, weapons, or they just like a nature-themed adventurer profession. These ppl were forced by anet to use a pet. Atm the ranger has no options at all, the class is a pet class, end of story. Personally i have no problem with pets in spvp or even pve (and i have been playing the class since release in tpvp, wvw and pve). The problem is in wvw, i hate my pet in wvw, especially while fighting a zerg with a small party. And no it’s not a l2p issue. They poorly implemented our pet mechanic, they should have tested it a bit more, it’s too late now. They should stop with this stupid “class philosophy” kitten and start reworking things. I’ve never seen a worst pet mechanic, it’s just that bad, lots of useless ugly pets nobody uses. Pigs really? Lol -yea let’s add tons of stupid pets so players can have fun collecting them, yea super c00l!!!11- No pet customization; all the pets i see around are named the same “juvenile kitten” cos you can’t even save your pet’s name after choosing a different one. Even the pet swap mechanic i think is really bad and poorly implemented -oh kitten the aoe spamming is killing my pet let’s summon the second one- The truth is they ruined the ranger class with their stupid “philosophy”.

No and no. Ranger is one of the best dueling classes out there and possibly the most OP class in the game aside from necros. If you as a ranger cant figure out how to beat a mesmer 1v1 then its on you. Mesmers are in need of massive buffs to be viable again. We were the only class nowhere to be seen in PAX should be a huge hint hint to the state of this class
You are so unbiased man… He said “buff gs ranger”, not “buff the ranger class cos it sucks”. Rangers have idd very good dueling specs (just like mesmers); these specs have one thing in common: they are really strong 1v1 and even an idiot could play them well (spirit ranger and phantasm mesmer). So yea spirit ranger atm needs a fix, i hate that spec since is extremely boring to play, i’d rather playing something else, like a zerker build but, you know, a zerker ranger is just not as effective as a condi spirit ranger, so i’m forced to play a spec i don’t like. Stop with the wrong equation op spec=op class. And ye mesmers need massive buffs, massive. They should double their dmg and make them totally immune to conditions. I bet you would not complain at all about that.
As a necro you chain-fear people to death, if they can’t break out of it/ or they don’t have stability. As a warrior you cc and stun people to death, if they don’t have any stunbreakers.
That’s definitely a problem. You know this happens when devs don’t learn from other games. Used to be like that in warhammer online as well (and i’m sure in lots of other games), until they finally introduced an immunity timer. They chose to add stability
(boon) instead of an immunity timer. Too bad this is not working very well…
Guys…guys…our beloved devs have already said they are working on that. After a year they realized rewards in spvp are bad so hopefully in 2014 or so we will see some changes. But tbh i believe if the pvp aspect of this game was more balanced we would see much more players in spvp, but ye this isn’t probably true for wvw players, since wvw is even worse than spvp and they are not looking for a balanced game experience (except for those brave -or reckless- roamers trying to fight against huge zergs).
Lots of bows are bugged in this game (and tbh almost all of them look bad and not realistic at all). It’s a shame even the legendary kudzu has a bugged string. On a side note, kudzu is NOT the only one with that problem, the destroyer long/shortbow is another one with that ugly bugged bowstring. A lot of bowstrings are affected by different bugs, some of them are not straight, some are just floating like that one.
Clearly they needed a nerf. I mean after all ppl used to complain 24/7 about how op porcine pets were. Oh wait…

64. But yes i made this spec just for hotjoins i never play something like this in tpvp. You are really squishy those 6 secs of invuln can save your life. You have to use the signet at the right time.
Ofc this is for spvp. In wvw i would use lb instead of sb like Xsorus said.

This build can be really annoying. You are quite squishy, but 6 secs of invuln, good vigor availability and smart use of entangle will help you.
this game unfortunately has one of the worst development teams i have ever seen, thats it really.

Hao is a really good heal for glass power builds. The main problem with hao is the pretty long cast time. It should be reduced to 1 sec. Also, power builds usually don’t have eb, that’s a big problem, actually the main reason why power glass builds are not that good. Hao should remove 2 conditions, that would be amazing and perfect for power builds, expecially combined with sor.
I agree, but you know this happens in every game. The atmosphere on this forum is definitely toxic, that’s true. Every time they buff something and make a new spec viable for a class, the qq on the forumZ starts. I’m not saying the buffs are always good or totally and perfectly balanced, but according to the players posting in the pvp section every class is op except for the one they play/like the most. As a result after one year we still have like 2 (if you are lucky) decent specs for every class.

I’m on the opposite side of Fjandi. Power builds for Rangers are awful. They still have no group utility. They still have no ranged burst. Melee is still reliant on evade spam in order to function as well as it does.
The ranger continues to be a condition class, but the worst condition class in the game.
Both bows continue to be the worst weapon options for the class.
Bm bunkers used to be considered op, and had no group utility. We have no ranged burst, that’s kinda true, but we have amazing burst with pet, longbow and greatsword. Power builds are not “awful”, they are simply much harder to play than condi builds, plus a zerker ranger is squishy compared to a condi rabid ranger with 30 points in ws.
Ranger is definitely not the worst condition class in the game, a ranger can spam conditions like a baws, and the shortbow is a good weapon in condi builds.
Power specs for rangers definitely need some work and little buffs, but are not so bad as most ppl think. The problem is conditions are simply too strong atm and out of control, so condi specs are ofc “better” and easier to play, plus again a ranger without eb is not going to last long in spvp, and we have to spend 30 points in ws to get that trait.
I don’t think power specs are bad tbh, contrary to the popular belief. The problem is conditions are totally out of control atm. Bm specs are still good, the pet dps got nerfed but not that much, we mostly lost burst dmg like raven f2.
The main issue ranger has atm is the lack of a real viable condi removal except for eb. Yea we have hs and sor, but there are so many condis atm and they are soooo easy to spam and reapply that’s simply not enough.
In wvw i suppose everything is viable if you hide behind 100 other players…i mean lb has 1500 range and can hit quite hard, plus it has now a stealth as well; the gs has awesome burst and a good escape/block. So yea i think is viable, but without eb conditions are going to destroy you if you are solo.
Meh, after one year i gave up tbh. It’s quite clear they probably don’t care or are too busy designing new stupid pve kitten. On a side note i might understand them…i mean pvp is such a mess right now with this insane aoe condis and effects spam, they probably have more important things to look at.
The truth is they introduced our pet mechanic way too late and without proper testing only cos it looked c00l. On top of that they added tons of stupid useless pets cos they thought they were c0000l and super fun to collect.
This is the worst pet system i’ve ever seen tbh, i used to be angry about that but i just know now nothing is going to change.

Warrior’s longbow is not really a sniper weapon. Compared to the ranger version, the range is also lower. Warrior is like a “weapon master” in this game, that’s why they can use pretty much every single non-magical wapon, including bows and rifles. That said, rangers can use both types of bows, long and short, while the warrior can use the long version only. Rangers in this game use bows, not firearms.

Not really. That is not what the term “Ranger” means. You’re just slapping your own definition over the real definition. Again the problem is not “rangers cannot use rifles”. The problem is that role (ranged guy with a rifle) is already occupied by the warrior. Also i read somewhere in gw2 lore some classes embraced technical innovation, like thieves and engies, while others refused it, like, yes, rangers.
Our ranged “sniper” weapon is the longbow, sorry but there is no place for rifle imo, this is not going to happen. On a side note a thief with a sniper rifle would look much better than a ranger.

No one fears rangers. Every class ridicules us, some speed run dungeon groups actively protest against us. Even in sPvp, everyone gives us hate.
I play ranger in spvp since release and my perception is exactly the opposite. Even glass power builds are viable, the only thing we really need is another good option for condi removal except for eb. Rangers are amazing in every game mode…ok maybe not in wvw zerg fights, but really who cares about zerg fights, they are for baddies anyway.
So annoying.. Spirit ranger, minions necro, clones…. plus massive particles and aoe going around I can’t even target what I want. And also these pets and illusions will follow you forever, if you stealth, for example, they instant target you. Could we raise the skill base of this game please? Less AI and aoe dependent?
It’s too late dude, they won’t redesign all the classes. Anet guys love npc and passive play apparently. In this game there are npcs everywhere, class mechanics based on npc, spvp maps with npcs, wvw maps with more npcs and stupid mobs than players. Lol i remember a dev said they are trying to estimate the max number of npcs admitted in a pvp map without turning it into pve. This fact is quite eloquent. Oh, anet, the answer is “0”.
Game was not balanced at all. Maybe the classes were somewhat balanced, but the game was still a mess. Aoe was massive and now…it’s even worse…
The qq will never end. I mean they can nerf the necro more and more but this won’t stop the complaints. Maybe players will stop qqing about necros tho. I predict warrior will be the next target. Imo the problem is not necro/thief/engi etc, but the whole game mechanic, the aoe in particular. Apparently their way to fix the aoe was moving greater marks to master trait. But yea, it’s not like they are going to rework all the classes one year after release…
Ye ofc now ppl have realized warriors are not that bad. In a few days they will all start copying/paste the same build. In less than a week the new massive forum qq will begin. It’s the same story all over again. Only the class is different.
It won’t take long until some “top player” jumps on here with a new thread “I iz pro gw2 player i play super high end tpvp, so i know how the game works, not like those hotjoin heroes or wvw scrubs. I think cc warrior is op and should be nerfed”.

All this steroids abuse in tyria is frightening.
Pet mechanic was really bad implemented in this game. They probably decided to turn the ranger into a pet based class a bit too late (why anet? WHY??) so they had no time to develop pet mechanic or even test it. Pet AI at release was terrible, now is better but still kinda bad. Who knows i suppose some anet devs are just animal lovers lol “ohhh i want a cute kitty cat”.
Anyway in spvp pet is not really a problem, is actually an advantage (that’s why bm rangers used to be so good, the devs had not even tested pet damage). In pve…i don’t really care about pve tbh, but i don’t have problems with pets there. But when i play wvw i wish i could just delete my kittening pet, and i don’t even play in zerg fights.
Guys don’t keep your hopes up too high, they are not going to rework pet mechanic. Ranger without pet will never exist in this game. For anet the ranger is a pet class, they don’t care if 90% of ranger players hate pets or don’t like them. I know it sucks, that’s actually one of the things i hate the most in this game.

Removing stability… My god, I can’t imagine the horror. Maybe a bit finetuning, but removing it?
That sounds like a bad idea, but imo removing stability and adding a small cc immunity timer wouldn’t be horrific at all, quite the opposite. Also this will solve the fear spamming problem.
I believe necros reflect the main problem in this game, aoe spamming. They are probably the best at that. The more i play this game the more it seems fights on points are just about spamming aoe condi around. It’s too late to fix this imo, there are way too many aoe skills, they should rework basically all the classes, this is not gonna happen. While designing this game they focused too much on what looked c00l and way too little on what looked balanced.
Anyway the necro buff doesn’t seem so huge to me. It was most likely not needed at all. They listened way too much to forum complaints. Necro were considered weak while they probably were not. Like bm rangers were considered a joke until suddently someone realized they were not that bad. Same for the new fotm spirits build.
But hey i still remember the devs said they base their balance work on forum qq so…
Essentially, what is going to happen now is that they are going to overnerf some specs making them totally useless (instead of reversing the mistakes they made). The game is going to remain the same, still unbalanced but probably in a different way.
Imo the warrior is the only good designed class in this game, that’s why is considered so weak compared to others.
