Now, for those people who are upset about ascended gear (though I do believe half of them are doomsayers who just looking for the next big thing to whine about), you have the group of players above to blame for Anet’s recent change in mechanics. All these people whining about being bored because they don’t have any “goals” finally got their wish.

You display a strong condescending nature to everyone that expresses a opinion different from your own. Aside from this, these whining people you mention didn’t change one line of code, so the “blame” does not lie with them.

You’re right, Anet implemented a feature that half the forum wanted for no reason at all! it’s just a coincidence that the entire hardcore elitist community had been demanding it for months. Thank you for opening my eyes!

I am not surprised by your lack of decorum. However, yes, at the end of the day Anet is responsible for their actions. They are the producers and they can find good solutions… or they can find poor ones. It is their job to have a proper vision, and to execute it faithfully. There will always be critics.

Lightbringer

This all sort of assumes that people who were fans of GW1’s static system of gear progression all loved every instance of linear, mechanical, vertical title track progression. This is not the case. I think the Lightbringer title (and the handful equivalents for other types of enemies) was stupid and unnecessary, and a blemish on the design of the game.
Nobody is in love with elements of GW1 because they were elements of GW1. People liked specific mechanics in GW1 because they were good ideas. Do you see fans of Guild Wars 1 clamoring to remove jumping and dodging from the game? No? Then why would you assume they would be in favour of all of a game’s mechanics, instead of just the one that they happen to be bringing up over and over as supremely important to them?

Now, having said all that, there is a clear difference, that other people have already pointed out, between the Lightbringer title’s mechanical bonus, and what ArenaNet is doing with Ascended gear and Infusion: Lightbringer was localized vertical progression. You obtained it in a certain area, from doing a certain type of content, and the bonuses you gained applied only while you were doing more of that type of content.
If there must be vertical progression in the game, it is infinitely more tolerable when localized to a specific area of the game than when it applies across the whole game world. It’s the difference between disliking it, but being able to tolerate its presence, and being enough of a cancer on the game that I won’t play the game at all when it’s present.

This. Lightbringer was dumb. We would not be up in arms if there was a Fractalbuster track in GW2. We would… think it was dumb. And move on.

Somethings just don’t matter much. Others do.

Next we will hear how GW1 “had infusion” again.

Reading comprehension would help. One argument was about the cost. One. And it was the last point made.

All these posts make it seem like the OP was complaining that they cost too much. No.

The OP was stating that for the cost, we get bland armor, that then needs to be transmuted (another cost to get the lvl 80 stones for transmuting), and they have no runes. You’re paying for a skin. Fine. Make it a worthy skin.

Only 5 sets are the Destiny’s Edge armors. The other 10 sets are a toss up of good sets and crap sets. Look at the Charr as an example of extreme mediocrity. Are you into S&M leather fetishes? Then they are perfect.

Want to make them 500g? 1000g? Fine! I’d love that. Make them look like they are worth 1000g then.

I think a number of them look nice. The real point however is prestige, because they look different and can be recognized. And 1000 gold? Really? What do you expect them to look like? But, my guess is you will have 1000 gold armor sooner or later.

population and state of gw2

All I can say is this: the forums cry out that the game is “dying,” yet I still see a ton of people everywhere I go. The noobie zones are just as populated as when the game launched, although they no longer have overflows either.

This game is far from dying.

Now, I don’t know about all this “game is dying” talk. However, claiming that the noobie zones are just as populated as at launch destroys your credibility. And the 30-70 zones can be even more empty. This could have everything to do with rewards and nothing with server population. However, empty is what these zones have become.

i really like what u said here. could u eleborate on the “This could have everything to do with rewards and nothing with server population” comment and to clarify u dont think this gw2 is dying?

As Servanin pointed out for me, it is less efficient for a level 80 character to be in a level 40 zone, in terms of gold/karma per unit time. One reason is inherent: loot scaling is not balanced. The other is self-reinforcing: despite event scaling (and even because of event scaling), it is more efficient to play in areas with many other people. Naturally, people will reach higher equilibrium in areas perceived as more dramatically more efficient.

About the game “dying”… I honestly have no numbers and too limited a viewpoint to make such an assessment. My personal suspicion is that activity has decreased as was always to be suspected, but this does not translate to the “death” of the game. I suspect there was cough a very steady core group that were happy to continue this game for many years, buy all of the expansions, and pay a reasonable amount for items in the gem store. “Dying” is the assessment made generally made by the people that are NOT of this group, because they inherently have little loyalty to the game themselves and they feel no compulsion to remain. Now this has all been thrown into question. Much of the loyal base is now disloyal, and any revival is composed of naturally fickle customers. So in short, I really can’t draw any conclusion.

Compete for what exactly? I hear a lot of talk about competition, but I was unaware that PvE had a competitive scene.

Even if it did, it’s like me getting mad at the PGA for offering a green jacket because I can’t compete with professional golfers.

Such a terrible analogy. It is like you being mad that, although you are skilled enough to play in the PGA, you can’t because by their tournament rules you have only ‘earned’ the right to use crude wooden sticks and sponge balls when you play. Do mindless repetitive tasks with those long enough, and they will give you an upgrade. But you better not slow down or it’s back to the sponge ball for you!

Another thing about Ascended gear as filling some Exotic-Legendary gap:

Unlike Legendary weapons, you aren’t looking for just one Ascended piece. Estimating 20 hours of effort to acquire a single piece (probably more, but just for sake of argument) and the apparent eventual desire to have 20 or so pieces for your character, you are looking at 400 hours of time, if not more, to produce a single character and build.

So you are essentially creating a grind just a large as the one for Legendary weapons (which were always viewed as optional). BUT this one is for stats (which are NOT going to be viewed as optional). How does this square with your philosophy!?!?

The Agony mechanic wasn’t introduced at the start of the dungeon so that everybody can experience the content. While one of the goals of the Fractals of the Mists dungeon was to provide some difficult content for players looking for a challenge, we also wanted the dungeon to be available for everybody to experience. While getting far into the dungeon requires agony resistance from ascended gear, the content was designed to provide challenging content, and to allow players to choose what difficulty they wanted to play at.

Earning the ability to choose an appropriate difficulty level seems to be a long, drawn out affair. It is one where you have to find 4 other people dedicated to completing each difficulty level before it, even though the difficulty progression is quite slow. The result is that you are asking everyone to grind the ability to even choose a difficulty.

As for ascended gear, to reiterate what Chris has said (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/news/A-message-from-our-Studio-Design-Director-Chris-Whiteside), it’s not intended as a treadmill, but rather as a tier of rewards that can help bridge the gap between Exotics (a few hours of effort to acquire a piece) and Legendaries (hundreds of hours of effort to acquire one). They’re currently only available in the Fractals of the Mist Dungeon, but we’re going to be adding new ways to acquire them, both inside of WvW as well as elsewhere in PvE.

The huge consumption of tier 6 mats and ectoplasm to craft Ascended gear only compounds the difficulty of getting a Legendary weapon. Thus, I would say the gap isn’t bridged but just pushed until later. Bridging the gap also does not in any way explain why Ascended gear transformed the grind for appearance into the grind for statistics.

Fractals of the Mists Saved PvE!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Fortuna.7259

I think one thing that we can all agree on, whether for or against Ascended items, content gating, issues finding parties, or what have you, is this:

The actual content of the Fractals is incredibly good, and quite possibly the most fun aspect of GW2 PvE to date.

I don’t see it as remarkably better than other dungeons. Why do you feel it is?

That’s your opinion and I respect it. Here’s my two cents on why I find them so fun:

1) Not overly long. The entire set of three fractals (plus boss, if you’re on an even number), is about as long as all explorable paths of some dungeons, depending on group skill and composition. However, it’s broken down into smaller chunks of very different content, which makes it feel more dynamic and less grindy overall.

So, they are longer than a single dungeon path, but are better because they aren’t overly long? Not following. I can do different content broken into smaller chunks by doing one path of three of the previous dungeons.

2) Cool mechanics! Rather than just being a bunch of combat with some dodge required, maybe one or two puzzle-like or gimmicky mechanics as in most dungeons, the majority of the fractals revolve around cool or interesting mechanics (cultist hammer in cliffside, fans/guitar hero of death/like charges in uncategorized, DOLPHINS?! in underwater, etc) that bring a fresh new feel, and an intelligent aspect to completing content.

I don’t see how destroying a stationary object with a hammer is fundamentally different from, say, having four activation points open a gate. Does it feel new? Sure. But if you swapped the dungeons in which they occur I would not say either was somehow out of place.

3) Random selection of content: some people may like or dislike this, but I find it exciting to be faced with any of nine different mini-dungeons every time you head in. Keeps things fresh and fun, rather than players simply finding the easiest/quickest path to complete and farming it.

If you just do one path of a dungeon each day, then I assume you might be pressured to do the easiest one repetitively. But many people want to run all paths. I don’t think it was particularly hard to find a group for different paths and dungeons for some variety. Efficiency was not as big of a concern as it is with FotM.

4) The actual content is aesthetically stunning, and a lot of player interactions with mobs and the environment tell little stories, are humorous, or even raises questions about lore that really make you want to get into the immersion. What is that colossus dude? Why is there a crazy cat lady asura abandoned in this facility? I love those little things, to be honest.

Anyway, that’s the best I can sum it up right now, I’d love to add more if I think of it.

Again, I’m not sure of why you think there is a qualitative difference here.

Don’t get me wrong, I think FotM feels as good as any other dungeon. However, putting it as the de facto activity to repeat ad nauseam is expecting far, far too much from this single instance. Because at the end of the day, it is just another dungeon.

Fortuna.7259

Ok im not trying to be the dark horse in this conversation, BUT I do think exotic gear level was TO easy to obtain. I think they should continue to add ascended items but then Stop and ensure that this is the highest gear tier forever (a LONG time). This certainly gives those that want more to do some content and doesnt affect those who dont <— This is because anyone with exotics can easily make it to lvl 10 of the fractals.

Exotic items were “easy to obtain” if, and only if, you:

1) Refuse to play more than one character.
2) Refuse to play more than one build on each character.
3) Refuse to use anything other than the cheapest (profession-crafted) Exotics in the game.

For players who have a lot of time to play the game and still want advancement, there are release valves built into the game’s design everywhere. It’s like that old joke about a slowly drowning man, only in this case the punchline is replaced with “Yeah, I guess you’re right. I’ll fix that for you.”

For the rest of us, it is not easy to outfit yourself with the Exotics you need. I play four characters at level 80, and two of them have two completely separate builds that require two completely separate sets of gear. I also like to use moderately nice looking gear, instead of awful looking Pearl weapons. That means it costs at least 200g to 250g to be outfitted in Exotic equipment. That is one hell of a grind to max out, with “easy to get” Exotics.

It will be impossible for me to max out with Ascended equipment, unless I stop playing everything except one build, on one character. Ascended equipment eliminates 83% of the game for me, in one fell swoop.

Catering to players who refuse to play the game except in one specific way, forever, should not be a priority.

Precisely. In addition, nearly all content has been rendered obsolete. Sure, I can go there… but dungeon groups will be hard to find, and maps emptier than ever. What fun. Now we have one dungeon that is itself super stratified so good luck organizing a group at your level.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Horizontal progression is something you can do at any pace, because unlike vertical progression, it does not prevent you from experience X unless you met requirement Y.

This is excellent for people that:

1) Don’t have as much time to play as the typical gamer.
2) Like the freedom to “goof around” and enjoy themselves, because you aren’t pressured to do the most efficient thing constantly to progress.
3) Like to progress on a variety of tracks, because in a highly demanding grindfest you simply won’t achieve two characters (or even builds) able to do max content.

What if the Manifesto is just wrong?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Fortuna.7259

You’re right that my argument isn’t conclusive. I can’t show you a situation in which a certain set of design decisions MUST lead to the introduction of vertical gear progression, probably because this situation doesn’t exist. My reasoning is not deductive; it is, admittedly, inductive. I’m not constructing a logical syllogism; I’m…submitting a possible and plausible explanation.

Your reasoning just isn’t sound.

A is a duck.
B is a duck.
B has property C.
B has property D.

If A has property C, then it will also have property D.

This doesn’t follow. In the absence of any reason to believe D follows from C, talking about ducks and such is just smoke and mirrors.

Disproving that D doesn’t follow from any property that A has is essentially impossible. So you can continue your questioning all day long. But in the absence of evidence to the contrary, I seriously think not.

Like I said in an earlier page, I have to take an opposing position in order to try to look at things rationally. To that end I’m perfectly happy to admit I’m wrong in my assertion that MMORPGs are categorically and essentially defined by having gear progression. But that’s the kind of conversation I’m really hoping we can have as a community after this fiasco blows over: Was the Manifesto realistic in the first place?

In what way are you suggesting it was not realistic? By what measure and standard?

And if it was, where did Guild Wars 2 go wrong? Because my feeling is that it wasn’t with Ascended armor and Infusion slots. It had to have happened before that, somewhere in the prototype stage, during which the developers decided to have a combat system, a crafting system, a trait system and a leveling system which were more like variations of the mainstream rather than something radically new.

You think so? What then is inherent about those systems that require a perpetual gear treadmill? You are making no case for any connection whatsoever.

Fortuna.7259

Yeah, I agree that they promised we wouldn’t have gear progression, and now we do, and that’s a perfectly valid reason to be incredibly upset. But what I’m saying is—look back at the game we’ve been playing since Beta. This is not a game that tried terribly hard to rewrite convention and take huge risks. The Manifesto does not describe a game that’s “inclusive to both hardcore and casual players.” The Manifesto describes a game that does away with everything that created the hardcore/casual dichotomy in the first place.

It was a game that took a very solid position on a couple of risks. It doesn’t matter if they were rewriting convention, were radical, took huge risks and lots of them, OR if they were taking minor risks, only those risks, and sticking mostly to convention. Completely irrelevant to whether it is possible to deliver an MMO without grind.

Show me an argument where something you are arguing (grind is to be expected) FOLLOWS from the other properties of GW2. Because honestly your argument by association is far from conclusive.

Lost in a car analogy? How about…

The flying machine must flap its wings, because just look at birds and show me a bird that does not ever do so.

Everyone can be mad at the companies all they want, but the fact of the matter is that the market shifts to where the money is if the company is competent.

So, if the money is in appeasing the demographic that WoW players inhabit, then the games will continue to be more like WoW.

The only 100% sure fire way to ensure that this stops is simple: Stop giving companies your money.

Seriously. It is quite literally the only way it will happen.

The WoW market is an already crowded marketplace. Catering to the WoW demographic might ensure some short term money, but it also ensures mediocrity and the lack of a huge hit.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with targeting a niche market that has little competition, from a company perspective. Apologists act as if a company has a moral obligation to target the biggest audience. This is simply not true.

Single time events are terrible in MMO’s. Not only do they exclude a large amount of the player base, they are horribly vulnerable to bugs and latency issues caused by overcrowding. Deciding on a kickoff time for something that should simply not be done is moot.

So my argument is that GW2 is still fundamentally a pretty conventional game, despite the high aspirations of its Manifesto. Compare GW2 to GW1 and City of Heroes, in terms of pure unconventionality, and both GW1 and CoH are much more radical in their vision.

So what I’m asserting is that the manifesto was unrealistic in relation to the game they actually made, which is a lot more like an MMORPG than expected. Given that they were so cautious about change, is it therefore that surprising that they’d also (very cautiously and in small unthreatening steps) more or less reverse one of their Manifesto bullet points and introduce tiered gear? I’d argue: No.

So I can’t make a car that runs on bio fuel because it has a steering wheel and headlights? I’m sorry. The premise behind your argument, that something must be radically different or essentially the same, is not only false but is contrary to typical evolutionary processes. You are saying the first fuel injection car had to fail because it looked too much like other cars with carburetors.

There’s no mandate at all. I’m submitting the idea, however, that the de facto definition of an MMORPG is a game which includes, along with a big concurrent online community, some kind of gear progression. It’s not a mandate, but it’s a pattern of MMO design that defines the genre. It doesn’t have to be that way, but I think it’s fair to say that the genre has been built on vertical gear progression for so long that it’s essentially a given in most games.

It is a given in most games. This is irrelevant because GW2 was STRONGLY sold as a game where that would not occur. Hence, they sold copies to people that would never have touched the box otherwise. I wonder how that would make anyone mad?

He didn’t even accurately represent GW1. Having to do a few story missions to access unusual places is not the equivalent of having to grind 1000 hours for gear to survive in them.

I just can’t figure out why someone who isn’t 80 yet wants to already start dooing things he will get bored of at lvl80 because there is so little to do at 80 :/

Might as well start early and get your levels while doing it. You are going to be there a very long time…

What if the Manifesto is just wrong?

How can it be “wrong” when many, many people obviously want to play that way? Maybe it isn’t “profitable.” (More likely I suspect it merely less profitable short-term). But… wrong? Seriously?

I want to play that way, but I need to make something clear.

I’m not saying it’s not going to damage Anet’s credibility that they broke their manifesto. They did, and it hurts.

What I am saying is that their manifesto was probably unrealistic considering how they designed their game. Their Manifesto describes a game that isn’t an MMO. They made an MMO.

If they wanted to follow their Manifesto more closely, they shouldn’t have designed GW2 to look and feel and play like a classic, run of the mill MMO. But they did. Consequently, some elements of their Manifesto proved wrong in practice.

That’s the argument I’m presenting.

That’s absurd. There is no mandate for an MMO to have gear progression. None. An MMO doesn’t even need to have gear. Period. If you have a game that many people will play online together with some form of massive connectivity, then it is an MMO.

Your argument is they were destined to fail because they made an MMO… that isn’t an MMO because it doesn’t have gear progression…? Which is it? If they designed a game that has no gear progression, and all MMO’s must have gear progression, then they never made an MMO so they don’t have to worry about that.

Fractals killed the other content. Not only that, but apparently Orr drops AND Plinx were ninja nerfed really hard. GG.

You’re assuming player skill with keep up with the difficulty. There will always be a portion of the player base at the lower levels.

Not true. What happens is early comers get to the high difficulty, and then there is not enough critical mass to get past the first few difficulties any longer. Especially if gearflation makes higher difficulty easy and you have to grind a very gradually increasing difficulty curve on top of everything else.

WAY too much negativity from some people. It’s just a game for goodness sake. It’s not like having to get another tier of gear is going to screw your life over.

Life? Hardly. The game? Yeah. Plenty of other games got screwed over before. I never think about them after a month or two.

Close. Remove the lvl1, 2, and 3 posts and you are nearly to there.

Honestly, people that know the genre know how these things end.

To the people who are saying “I didn’t buy this game to grind dungeons I just wanted to stroll about in the world and do my thing and enjoy dynamic events la la la”…

Are you actually doing that? Are you actually going back to zones and re-experiencing the events and the world? Or is this just an ideal that you wish you could do, but never actually could get yourself to do?

Maybe this is why Anet is being flexible now with their original philosophy, because they see that despite their own ideals of having players go out into the world and just “having fun” people simply don’t do that anymore.

Yes I was.

I was as well. Am I allowed to feel pity for people that don’t do “having fun” in their games any more? No wonder MMO’s are such garbage.

You can start FotM runs at level 2, no? So yes, level 80 content is still the same as level 2 content. It’s just. Very. Limited. Welcome to Fractals of the Mist: The Game!

Less then one day god your lazy.
Do you realty want the game just to hand you every thing? And like always you do not need the gear to play most of the game just the T6 and up on the new event that YOU HATE so i do not see your problem other then the need to come of the forms and tell ppl about your made up problems.

1) He didn’t farm the 50 ecto and 250 T6 mats in that same day.
2) The “not need” argument is silly. People don’t want to play in a game where they suffer from arbitrary disadvantages. They play games to get away from that. If there is anything people do “not need,” it is to have more numbers to fight more numbers.
3) I really enjoy the term “lazy” applied to people that don’t find excessive repetition in A GAME their idea of fun. Yeah, we want to play a game here not work it 9 am to 12 pm (which is what “a day” means). That is why we purchased a game with the PROMISE it wouldn’t put us through that.

It was done by about 2 am this morning or so.

No, you don’t need some obscene fractal count. They linked it, showed it off, etc. And according to them, it was made in the mystic forge with 250 ancient bones.

So, yeah, people are already getting this stuff day one without going completely insane.

Ancient bones are in overabundance by little need for them and people farming Orr day in day out. Now, T6 mats are needed in massive quantities and you can farm a handful an hour. See any problem here at all?

And oh yes I’m sure somebody with nothing else to do had plenty of mats stockpiled and could get enough dungeon runs in to get a backpack. Does this mean he won’t have to grind to get 18 or so other pieces of ascended for just one build?

Too funny. If anything, this proves how hardcore grinders will be done with this “new content” in no time and still be bored, demanding more “gear progression” or leaving, and the core GW fans will be ever more alienated.

The truth is… this scheme wasn’t made to make either of these groups happy.

I know EXACTLY what you’re saying, but IF you thought anet was gonna do away with end game progession, you bought into the hype and I don’t feel bad for you.

A value expressed as a central tenet to your product isn’t hype. Especially when you have delivered on it before.
