Mesmer and Engineer are both harder to play than thief.

Are you trolling?

Only exception I’d say is P/D, easy to learn and play, but also P/D has its difficulties.

Yes, bad players who don’t communicate tend to die in this game. That is irrelevant to how good SR is in group play.

Yes, SR is good in smaller organized group play, so are many other things every other class can bring. And this is also where thieves are strongest in WvW, while they are horrible everywhere else except for scouting.

Can they ress anyone?
- Not likely.

Wot? Shadow refuge is the best skill in the game for getting downed allies up. Stability stomp, invulnerability stomp, stealth stomp, blind stomp, block stomp… doesn’t matter because you can’t stomp invisible people.

Putting a Shadow Refuge on someone who’s downed wont ress him, and often people aren’t prepared to receive a shadow refuge, some even have severe brain lag and still tries to attack seconds after the refuge has landed resulting in them getting destealthed.

I did the mistake of trying to ress someone in front of a tower once, I received 2 hits from a meteor shower and some other generic AoE and got downed almost immediately, and seconds later I was killed as well while downed inside my own shadow refuge. I had a bit around 17k hp with my zerg build and 2.2k armor.

10.8k base hp and 1980 base armor isn’t that much you know when you don’t have any ranged options above 900 range.

How are thieves OP in WvW?

Do they have high ranged AoE?
- Staff ele says hi.
Can they ress anyone?
- Not likely.
Stomps in zerg fights?
- Often the thief is AoE’d down in split seconds resulting in a rally for the target for stomp.
Are they tanky?
- Guardian and Warrior says hi.
Do they have any AoE crowd control?
- Almost non-existent, tripwire if multiple opponents step on it at once or infiltrators strike for a 1s immobilize.
Do they have high range on ranged attacks?
- Necro, Ranger, Engineer and Staff ele says hi.
Can they support with condition removal, heals, might and other boons?
- Guardian and staff ele says hi.
Can they stealth zergs?
- Mesmer says hi.
Are they most often able to escape?
- Yes.
Are they unbeatable 1v1?
- No.
Can they fight solo against multiple opponents?
- Yes, but due to self-preserving stealth and mobility and lack of hard-counters and sloppy play from the opponents. People often rush when they outnumber someone resulting in the most dangerous attacks from multiple opponents mitigated in a single dodge. If someone properly times and chains CC with good synergy that thief is dead.

Agreed about the loading screen issue, if you’re in a tournament the box should pop up with Enter and Wait in the character selection after selecting char, or send you straight off to the tournament if it’s in the middle of a game, and after the match has started logging alts shouldn’t be possible til the match is over.

Ghostwolf.9863

You would want a really defensive build to be able to evade a lot of stuff, since the meta went in a really bad direction lately, I actually feel happy when I fight people still using the old meta builds.

2/0/6/0/6 P/D is a good option.
2/0/0/6/6 S/D as well.

Daggerstorm is handy for stability and reflect, or thieves guild since they have scorpion wire as well and soaks up stuff and ofc blinding and dealing dmg.

I usually swap Shadow Refuge for Scorpion Wire.

There are many tactics to troll, one is to position yourself well and avoiding getting locked down, then stealth off the glkittenches, and fish for dodges/invuln/stability, steal stability, if your opponent is really aggressive he will fail at positioning, then stealth off the glass again and walk across it for it to break and scorpion wire.

Seeing how you play mostly thief and very little of the other classes your opinion is very biased and unwelcome. That is all based on your comments. You can spam PW a lot more than 2 to 3 times. Specially if you are traited into initiative recovery and use the rollback utility. You seem to forget also that stealthing resets a fight in favor of thieves. Especially if the opponent has used their cooldowns. Thieves need a rework with their ability to spam.

Thief is my favourite class and I’ve played in total 2k out of 3.5k hours on it, and I’ve played nearly every possible build that makes sense. the only classes I don’t play are Ranger and Ele, but the rest Guardian, Warrior, Mesmer and Engineer I have tried many various builds on and played a lot, except necro which I’m still quite new to and still leveling to 80.

If you build an S/P thief for high intiative recovery and dodge, you will indeed be able to dodge and use PW more frequent, but you deal low damage. Conditions, High Damage and CC will destroy you quickly as always, If you want RfI for more initiative recovery you either go without shadow step or shadow refuge eliminating additional access to teleports and access to stealth, also after using RfI you have to use IS to get back into the fight which uses 3 of the 6 ini it recovered, infiltrator’s signet is more or less mandatory for the low cd stunbreaker extra ini regen and a gapcloser.

Sorry, but sounds like what you are describing is 6/6/6/6/6 with 6 utility slots.

Thieves are quite weak overall in PvP, that’s why many are going over to either P/D to join the condispam high survival club or S/D for the dodgespam club, both which are way stronger in combat than other alternatives.

If I could play D/D without getting kitten on by:
Turret spam, minion spam, fear spam, deathlyclaw spam, life blast spam, generic condispam, fellow players from the dodgespam club, 111 spam rangers, CC spam warriors, CC high dmg and heal spam eles, ele AoE spam which deals higher dmg than thieves do single target but AoE, guardians with block and blind spam and high dmg.

Believe me, I would.

Personally I find S/P quite balanced in PvP atm, you have to play smart and use blackpowder, auto-attack and interrupts, if you want to bring someone down, but when a lot of AoE is being spammed, so is Pistolwhip.

Which? Why? Do you have a different favourite in competitive PvP?

Battle of Kyhlo is my favourite by far, could be because I main thief, feels pretty much like home territory when playing thief. With all high ground, you can even get around a lot of the map on high ground and jumping on and between structures, and there’s all the cool shortcuts for shadowsteps, stealthing off objects with CnD, and someone may use a treb if needed and the trebs are able to destroy many of the structures and permanently change the map either by adding new ways to get around or reducing them. And all cool places to fight, fight on top of the clock tower rooftop, fight in a backalley, fight on top of a pipeline, or on top of a narrow stonewall hoping your opponent will end up falling, it’s a shame most of the fights take place on top of capture points.

Sîzer Build OP?

in Thief

Posted by: Ghostwolf.9863

Ghostwolf.9863

After trying this build out for many hours in spvp and tpvp, I find it really fun and strong.

What made me try it out was after I was nearly killed by a keyboard turning turret engineer who was standing on the same spot in my blackpowder field while I was playing D/P. A 2v1 against a turret engineer could even be a tough fight as D/P.

Now with S/D 2/6/0/0/6, I have enough dodges and sustain to survive the turret spam, for extended durations and I can contribute way better. So far I’ve only found good S/D eles to be annoying to fight, instant high burst, instant CC’s and blinds while having high sustain. Instant CC’s followed by high damage are in general the bane of this build.

While fighting 2/0/0/6/6 thieves with D/P 2/6/0/0/6 I used to time Heartseeker to land at the end of their Flanking Strike and dodge their LS, also keep some blinds up, sword is slow to deal with blinds.

Can be done with any weaponset really, but pistol offhand offers the blindfield and an interrupt to their heals.

Withdraw I find to be the most useful heal when flipping, you might get immobilized or perma crippled so withdraw is a nice way to remove them and stay mobile.
Smokescreen and Shadow Refuge are helpful too.

The Meta is All an Illusion

in Thief

Posted by: Ghostwolf.9863

Ghostwolf.9863

Assuming you have logical and reasonable people playing the game in this imaginary world of yours, the “meta” would still be around.

The “meta” as you call it is just an inevitability when you have many different agents looking to maximize efficiency.

Perhaps it wouldn’t spread as fast, however, assuming the players are logical and reasonable, they should all come to the same (if not a very similar) conclusion of what build/s are the most efficient to run in certain situations.

Its just like we all IRL have come to the conclusion (without much explaination mind you, just some basic logic) that the wheel/round shape is one of the most efficient methods of transporting mass from one location to another.

tl;dr meta builds are meta for a reason, and its not because they’re sparkly or special or taste like strawberries.

This.

Players who take time to learn every trait and theorycraft, try different solutions and test out, usually know the most effective traits and utilities and how to use them for the role they want to accomplish. If players couldn’t communicate we would see more build diversity for sure, but it wouldn’t exterminate the fact that the most effective ways to set up traits for a certain role will always be the most effective.

A good example is a friend of mine who found out how to setup a basic meditation guardian build, “blackwater” mesmer and also spirit ranger long before they got popular.

  • Initiative heavy. The combo costs 9 initiative, can be reduced to 7 with 10 SA,
so you have to pull out 7 initiative per 3 seconds to maintain this, I can see ways of doing that in combat but not without sacrificing a lot of damage.
  • Most builds in the game have enough sustain to survive. All builds if the HS is dodged.
  • Stealth =/= invulnerability, AoE damage, knockdowns and knockbacks will still be a problem.
  • People who cry about getting killed by Choking Gas from a “permastealthed” thief wont like this either.
  • Useless in tPvP.

It’s good for staying alive though, but too initiative heavy to maintain.

Cavalier will ofc deal more dmg on crit since it has both power and ferocity baked in.
However it’s more rewarding to pick power over ferocity, so if they actually add that gear with ferocity as a mainstat you will crit about same as if you were wearing berserker while berserker improves your overall dmg.

Ghostwolf.9863

1. Direct dmg builds are preferred in PvE, to easily be able to tag bosses and mobs and cause best DPS. It however works for soloing dungeons and stuff, although it has quite low dps.

2. It works quite ok in sPvP/tPvP, it requires you to play a bit different though and you should limit your usage of stealth. S/D or D/P are still more optimal for tPvP though.

3. In the start it can be quite expensive but the more you play the easier it gets to gear up quickly.

Meanwhile Elementalists kitten up a whole team with higher burst than thieves have single target, but AoE..

AoE damage and single target dmg isn’t really split in this game like in most other games. Put on some burning and fire grab hits just as hard as backstab but on multiple targets. Dragon’s Tooth, not far from the same dmg as backstab and on a 6s cd and AoE.. oh and ignores LoS and is ranged.

You wrote BT steal two stacks and this is wrong. It steals 2 boons and give max 1 stack of every stolen boon to you, also if your enemy have 15 stacks of might, and no other boon, it will give you not more than 1 stack of might.

That is the different between your and my post

Along with Thrill of the Crime it becomes 2 stacks of might, probably what he had in mind.

And yeah, boon removal is quite twisted. For thieves boon steal always goes for the defensive boons first and might goes away last. But it’s possible that it’s intended for thieves to be able to interrupt stomps along with a couple of headshots, an unique role thieves have. Just like eles are able to stun someone with an unbreakable stun for 5 seconds with their ice bow while basilisk venom elite does kitten, or that no one can get really close to the bunkering and team support as guardian can.

Ghostwolf.9863

that being said, afew days ago on my thief i hit someone for 9k with pistolwhip, that is just insane for a spammable skill that roots them and makes me evade damage.

The first pistolwhip is always the worst.

Counter it and stay above 50% health, damage the thief in case he’s using scholar runes.
After the thief has used pistolwhip 2 times, the third has lost +~33% worth of damage modifiers compared to the first. If you are below 50% health when you eat the first pistolwhip he gains +20% dmg and is on +50% dmg if he’s using scholar runes, then really high pistolwhips are likely. Combined with Sigil of Air and Sigil of Fire.

Pistolwhip isn’t heatseeking like other similar skills on other classes, so you can safely walk through the thief when the stun ends, which is way safer than walking away from him, unless you have some small distance between you and the thief and the PW is hitting at its max range range.

When the thief is getting low on initiative and is below 89% health, pistolwhip is weak as a main source of dmg.

How to beat condi Engineer?

in Thief

Posted by: Ghostwolf.9863

Ghostwolf.9863

I find P/D and S/P builds to have the biggest chance against engineers, or S/D with some luck, unblockable LS and nice crits, otherwise the fight will always be in the average-to-good engineers favor. And ofc, disengage with Shortbow when needed, engineers work best in close to medium range, so staying slightly above medium range will give them difficulties to hurt you.

Engineers are really weak against conditions, applying poison along with 2 or more other conditions will reduce their sustain a lot. Even PU mesmers can create really high pressure on engineers. And confusion and torment hurts them a lot too.

I usually avoid engaging engineers 1v1 since I know very well how easy it is to outplay thieves with them.

Ghostwolf.9863

I don’t really find anything really broken, and it all depends on builds
– Rock, Paper, Scissor.

But things that imo seems a bit “over the top” in general in sPvP.

  • Engineer – quite mobile, tanky, high sustain and burst heal at the same time, high damaging, quite unstoppable 1v1, even 1v2 and 1v3 depending on players and builds.
  • Thief – Chain evading. I feel evades should be more important than they are atm.
  • Warrior – They are really strong and can be really strong at many things at the same time, yet not really best at anything. Except that, killshot, while it’s more balanced against warriors, it one shots people with lower health pools and defence.
  • Necro – Lifeblast and Deathly Claws, combined with the Chill to Death trait and Sigil of Fire and Air, while it can seem more balanced when fighting against a warrior, it totally wrecks people with lower health pools.

One nerf that would make you quit?

Ghostwolf.9863

omfg, u want a spammable short knockdown? lmfao, kitten , some ppl rlly don’t think things through, ofc it would be “quite nice” you’d be able to knock your target down nonstop… WARNING! Nerf Disabling Shot threads INC.

and for the second part, they should, it would prevent thieves from backstabbing auto attack twice, and stealth again in combat

Was just a random suggestion, a daze or something would be good too. What I mainly had in mind was situations where someone locks a thief with long immobilize durations and has them eat high damaging attacks, in this situation the thief previously used to be forced to use Disabling Shot 2 or more times in a row to come out alive, this makes it difficult in a setting like 2v1 or 3v1 to hit the thief, where as something like an interrupt on whoever got hit by disabling shot would improve 1v1 survival, and it would be countered by stability at the same time. So I thought this true more than you can think, in terms of balance for both the thieves and other classes.

But you didn’t think your second part through, but I can’t really blame you for lacking knowledge about the class and probably about the whole game, like most keyboard turning rangers.

I do agree that Feline Grace could do with a minor nerf since it stacks too well with Vigor. Endurace Sigils could user a ner4f as well. 50% bonus stamina on weapon switch is rather a lot when taking all others dodge enhancers into account. Maybe it too should just add 5 seconds of Vigor on weapon swap so it doesn’t stack up so nicely.

Agreed, feline grace along with vigor is really strong and encourages dodging many times in a row, rather than just frequent dodges which it was meant to.

And sigil of energy is strong in all builds on all classes that involves it, 50% energy.. It allows you to dodge 3 times in a row, it’s forgiving and can lock out burst against every damaging build that relies on well-telegraphed skills. Thanks to this you would be able to survive things you normally shouldn’t be able to survive in terms of balance.

And mesmers can easily cough up a high amount of clones with nearly no punishment, thanks to this sigil. Deceptive Evasion wasn’t meant to be something that every mesmer build relies on to dish out clones, if that was the case it wouldn’t be a trait, that’s why they wanted this trait changed a while back.

I am a Thief and I have been saying this for the longest time, nerf shortbow 3. The spammable evades are just OP and lame. It’s not skillful.

It has already been nerfed and atm to the point that it is hardly useful even without spamming. I’d rather see it split into 2 skills like Flanking Strike, first the evade, then something else useful, this would make the evade part of the skill useful while not being fully spammable.

Shadow Arts SPvp

in Thief

Posted by: Ghostwolf.9863

Ghostwolf.9863

Shadow Arts is mainly a selfish traitline, you will be less mobile, and also sit in stealth a lot to benefit from the traitline which doesn’t help much in a fight, you will do slightly less dmg too.

By taking 6 points there you are more or less excluded from taking mug that grants extra burst damage and also some neat sustain, also from taking 3 points in trickery for really high mobility from the extra initiative pool. Or, It excludes you from using Executioner which creates a lot of pressure on lower health targets which is invaluable to end fights quickly. The main reason I avoid using S/D 2/0/0/6/6.

Executioner, mug and 3 points in trickery feels more or less essential to the role power thieves have. Then add 3 more points in trickery and you have boonrip and an instant interrupt and way lower cooldown on steal which is also quite invaluable.

It’s helpful for interrupting people with stability, preventing stomps for instance, or to prevent someone from interrupting your heal, and preventing high damaging skills. etc.

Or you dump the extra 3 points into Deadly Arts, which will increase your dmg more compared to 6 trickery. can be really handy if your team already is CC heavy and they need more dmg.

I even feel 2/6/0/3/3 is better than 2/6/6/0/0.

For me to totally quit thieves all weaponsets and traitlines for powerbuilds would have to get nerfed, so I’m fully out of options.

But here’s some things that alone would make me think twice before logging on my thief.

  • Taking dmg while in stealth unstealths you.
  • If backstab had it’s dmg reduced, and things like Life Blast, Killshot, Eviscerate, Shatter etc. not.
  • Aegis and other temporary blocks unstealths you. The only situation I would be fine with this is if backstab becomes unblockable from behind, this would also let us counter Aegis after popping Basilisk Venom.
  • Disabling shot wont get fixed, I hardly press disabling shot as it is now. I would want something like it being split into 2 to prevent spam, first the evade and cripple, then something useful on the second, a short knockdown would be quite nice and would fit the SB set since it’s mostly utility and decent pressure based.
  • If they nerfed Acro or Trickery so the lines would only be good for builds using both, I fear this a lot after seeing everyone crying about S/D 2/0/0/6/6.
  • If they increased revealed past 4 seconds.
  • If Blackpowder was turned into a dark field like someone suggested. o.0
  • If S/P was nerfed more, I hardly play S/P anymore and I’m really annoyed when I get catched off guard by a S/P thief, but hell, it needs to be like this for it to work and do its job.

It has saved me many times, and many times the stealth it provides haven’t done anything good, and many times it has killed me.

The problem lies mostly in taking damage from rapid attacks, phantasm duelist for instance, you are about to CnD at 50% health and the phantasm fires off a volley, and Last Refuge pops before the CnD has landed.

The fix imo would be for it to proc after current action, and cancel any queued skills.
Or that it gave different type of stealth that doesn’t stack with other sources, doesn’t give you revealed and doesn’t grant access to backstab.

Is there any situation where you gain something by not stacking blast finishers and blowing it up?

sure, perma regen while it’s there, vigor if playing a turret build with boons, and 2.5k heal 2 conditions removed every 15 seconds, + someone can break it and it goes on a full cd.

But if I deploy and blow it up, alone it heals 5k, removes 2 conds and blast finishes with itself, gives some seconds of regen, even a knockback if traited and goes on a 20s cooldown.

Is there something I’m missing or is healing turret quite useless at being a turret?

A really good P/D + D/P thief I fought once was using Perplexity runes and used BV or x/P for an interrupt, along with bewildering ambush. Quite some Confusion stacks he gave me.

I guess I’m playing it wrong. I only play in hotjoins because I don’t have time to look for a party, but even then, I keep getting outnumbered, so I’m forced to run away. It’s not suited for 2v1, nor is it suited to kill certain classes. I keep dying and it’s getting really frustrating. I’ve never seen a video of a meta d/p thief. Can someone make one?

Correct, to become a really useful thief you should more or less avoid 1v1’s.

In combat you shine most when your team is putting high pressure on a foe, when you can go in with a Basilisk Venom, steal and backstab followed by auto-attacks, heartseekers and head shots, blind if needed as well.

  • Someone is guarding your homepoint and 2 enemy player shows up there, since you have high mobility you can quickly go there and make quickwork of the squisher of the 2, you can make sure a stomp lands against everything besides ele, which will put the now lone enemy in a 1v2, and no class can handle a 1v2 well when there’s a thief involved.
  • Mid point is highly crowded and you can safely put pressure there with choking gas, clusterbombs and AA, as a thief no one can really stop you in this situation except other thieves.
    - A wild zerker staff ele appears on high ground spamming insanely high damaging AoE’s, an easy takedown for a thief. Same goes with other classes filling a similar role, like LB rangers, necros in lichform (but don’t get hit ) for instance.
  • NPC stealing in Forest of Niflhel, thieves are specialists at this, combine heartseeker with steal when the npc is at low hp, and then gtfo quickly when half the enemy team will be angry and chase you across the map.
  • Prevent enemies from taking buffs in Temple of the Silent Storm and also quick and easy cap the buffs yourself if you’re first there.
  • When your opponents go all in on Mid and/or Close, you may quickly go to cap or decap far depending on what’s best for the situation. If your team gets turned into minced meat at the mid there’s not really much you can do as a thief and you’re better of going for a full cap to buy time for your team to return to mid. While your team is returning, you may engage in 1v1’s at far and use BP, Shadow Shot and Headshot to stay alive and contest or go for a kill to prevent decap, leave if you don’t have any chance; Med Guardians, Necros and Engineers mainly.

Conclusion: Bring the most out of your mobility, support your team with spike dmg and interrupts, sustained SB pressure and don’t engage in 1v1’s unless absolutely necessary.

Depends on my mood. Though I’ve liked S/D since I started playing, usually with points in SA and Ac, then I started removing them and some patches later I ended up with S/D + SB 2/6/0/0/6.

2nd place D/D, I run it sometimes in spvp/tpvp, but it could really use some buffs, it’s not right when the set is at the point when you feel bad for your team for not picking D/P.

I like most suggestions.

But I feel dying should be more punishing to encourage staying alive and improve the importance of utilities, traits and builds for ressing and keeping teammates alive.

Not really sure how to change it, first that pops in my mind is -10 team score if you die. I would like the idea of being able to stall the game while attempting to even the scores, instead of speeding up the game by many kills or deaths.

The music from the vid sounds like taken from a porn movie.

Interesting build though, had a similar build myself with signets and Signets of Might instead of venoms, was using rampager amulet to create some hybrid dmg, bursted by channeling signet of malice into steal to proc balthazar and 5 confusion on them, swapped weap to trigger bleeds and poison on weaponswap then I used shadow strike. It felt broken how fast I killed people, but felt broken how fast I died myself too.

What’s the purpose of this thread? Write a blog if you wish to share things you experience in your life, not in a forum which is meant for constructive discussions, sharing knowledge, helping people or feedback.

Your older thread would still be alive if you brought up something constructive like: “What can I do in order to survive this without overhauling my eqiupment or playstyle too much?”

Where as it would have gotten merged with some other thread if you instead wrote:
“this is unbalanced, because … + additional information to counter possible counter-statements”

Engineer is the class with most tools to roflstomp thieves, if you didn’t see him either your PC, connection or reaction time is bad, or you simply were too busy facerolling.

The best tools engineers have at their disposal against thieves and many other classes/builds are Shield #5, Elixir S, Supply Crate, Tool Kit, Rocket Boots, Slick Shoes, Bomb and Grenade kit.

Shield #5 can fully prevent the D/D thiefs burst, Elixir S can save you from the backstab which will then allow you to regain control + a stealth to reposition yourself which is invaluable, supply crate will control the thief, toolkit has a block, bombkit and grenade kit AoE, slick shoes can fully stunlock a thief since they lack stability, Rocket Boots can create high distance + stealth if combined with smoke bomb.

D/D. People usually fall off their chair, and say “no…no… no no! ~scream~” when they see this build, but it currently is among the best ways to make D/D work, SB is more or less the mainset though and pumps out high dmg in team fights, I’ve been using it a lot myself and I adore the high damage I can cause with D/D when I need to spike someone.

D/P meta, works same as always, use interrupts and blinds to ruin the day for someone in a teamfight, and spike in an usual fashion with (BV)>BP>HS>Steal>BS, while under high pressure at a point use SB for poison and some sustained aoe damage.

I’m usually happy if I do an average of 8k.

Highest I’ve done is 17k on an ele in spvp.
