The outstanding Hatchery Bug

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Gilosean.3805

Gilosean.3805

Ok it’s mid-november, the 16th to be exact. A content update is released but does not include a fix to “the hatchery”?!?! Are you kidding me? 4 weeks of being stuck on a personal story line quest. 3 weeks of a fix waiting for a patch inclusion. My elementalist WAS my fave character. COME ON people! We were told the fix would come in at the next content update. We were told mid-November. Halloween came and went (hello new content). Now we have a new pvp map and still no fix for The Hatchery. A previous story line bug which skipped content was “fixed” with a “reset” prior to the skipped content. Surely something of that nature can be done to reset our story line choice (skritt in this case). I would prefer they give us a “skip to” option so we could move forward. At the very least, do SOMETHING please!

The fix is out. People who had the bug have completed the quest – including someone about 5 posts above you. Next time, please read the recent posts before flouncing around in a huff.

A friend invited for the free trial is unable to play because:

“you have not applied a retail serial code to your account and the grace period has ended.
until you apply a retail serial code, you will be unable to continue playing GW2.
please visit the retailer where you pre-purchased or pre-ordered GW2 to obtain your retail serial code”

Why?

I think that’s the message that should really say “The grace period hasn’t started yet.” You can set up a trial account now and download the client, but can’t apply the code just yet.

Gilosean.3805

Neighborhoods would be great. If there’s a quest arc, that would be fine, but I think since we already have the home instance they’ll just use that.

One thing I’d really like is a menagerie/pet room, or some way to have pets be out and about. I feel sad leaving them in the bank all the time, but there’s not really much to do with pets, and most pets run so slowly that I feel like I have to slow down when I have them out.

It could address a lot of material concerns too – there’s a sheep minipet right? So have players tend it and get wool! Or scales and claws from the scaled ones, etc. There are a lot of opportunities for non-violent game play, and I’d like to see more of that. And I’d love to be able to play with my pets instead of just running around with them trailing me.

Why level up craft when you can buy gear on BTC?

I got into crafting because I kept finding materials and wanted to use them. I had a specific armor set I wanted, and found that I’d rather save my gold and craft the armor myself with mats I had than buy it.

It also really does level you up ASAP.

Craft Common Ingredients into Fine?

Gilosean.3805

I’m struggling with leveling my crafting, and hit a wall due to lack of Bone Shard, when I have a ton of Bone Chips. It makes sense to me that small bits of bone could be used in place one larger piece, or could be stuck together into one larger piece.

Obviously this wouldn’t work for all materials – jute doesn’t turn into wool, no matter how much jute you’ve got. But for some common materials, do you think it would be a good idea to turn them into their fine-material equivalent?

It could be a refinement crafting step, just like turning scraps of jute into bolts.

Yeah. I think leaving zone-appropriate karma rewards alone is good, but then if the player is above-level adding in a chance for some crafting material would be a good way to get higher-level players spread out through the zones. And the gold for an event should definitely cover the expected repair cost – ANet can’t get this exactly, but a little tweaking would be nice.

The OP’s issue – which I also wonder about – is that if GW2 introduces a gear treadmill, s/he won’t ever be able to ‘catch up’ and do the content. There’ll always be a grind just to keep up with good quality gear, as higher gear gets introduced and content gets set to that level. I think it’s a reasonable concern, and is one of the many concerns I have right now about GW2 and ANet.

No problems with LGS 8.3+

if you’re using an older version, its probably being flagged as an uncertified application.

Have you done anything besides 1-1 keybindings?

I love this game, but the required button-mashing is just nutty. And not supporting simple macros is, in this day and age, not a very understandable decision. But it sounds like that’s what Gaile has been saying, and any clarification would be good.

Eh. So far there’s so many real players being banned for ‘botting’ that there’s no way to tell what set it off. It might be part of ANet’s master plan to keep botters from being able to figure it out – or it might be that ANet’s QA team didn’t do their job. Given how many bugs are in the rest of the game, I’m leaning towards the latter.

How to "legitimately" purchase Guild Wars 2?

Yeah, I’d love to buy a physical copy of Guild Wars 2 and avoid the joke that is their support service, but I have a mac and apparently only the digital copy is available.

I bought a physical copy and has exactly the same problem as your.

You can purchase the game through a physical retailer and get the Mac client – you can download either the Mac or PC client. Just use the serial code that comes with the physical copy to create your account, then download the Mac client.

I recommend avoiding the ANet store whenever possible. I bought my copy from GameStop, haven’t had any issues.

So if I would use a simple macro that would bind:
About face
2 (Staff Mesmer) or 5 (Dagger Air Elementalist)
About Face

In order to move across the map faster without getting carpal tunnel, would this be allowed or would it be grounds for banning me?

I’d like to know because I recently started experimenting with such macros (it is a feature of my keyboard after all) to alleviate the amount of button mashing I have to do after getting painful hands/wrists (occasionally) due to playing. If it is ‘illegal’ to use such macros and grounds for a ban then I will of course stop using them.

I want to know this too.

Sorry, ANet. Gamers use hi-end keyboard with macro technology. If your software can’t tell the difference between a player using simple macros and a bot operating independently, your software needs a ton of work. It’s understandable, but it would be nice if you’d admit it instead of trying to claim the process isn’t automatic (given the numbers of people posting genuine ticket numbers in the ban thread and how many player actions need to be analyzed for bot-detection, the ban process is either mostly automatic or so deeply flawed that most of the player bans are wrong).

In the meantime the very least you can do is give players guidelines so we can avoid being banned and clogging up your Support when all we’re trying to do is play the game. Making a game and then banning people for using macros is like making a sandwich shop and only accepting dollar bills. Can be done, but people need to be warned. And yeah, botters will find out too. The answer is to improve the ban system, which needs to be done anyway, so it’s a win/win for everyone except botters.

Infractions?

Are we able to report moderators? I got an infraction today after a guy on WvW forums decides to accuse our server of cheating and conspiracy theories, he calls out the entire server simply because his is losing. My response is that he’s being ingorant and I get the infraction and his post is still there, what the hell is this garbage? So you’re allowed to post inflamatory remarks aimed at an entire server population, but not an individual? what a joke.

I know that posting a statistically accurate and only-derogatory-if-you-squint remark about a group got someone I know an infraction. Some kind of appeal or moderator-report functionality would be nice.

At this point, there’s no way to tell who will and won’t get an infraction because they aren’t enforcing the rules consistently. Or if they think they are, the difference between one post and another isn’t explained.

We do not terminate accounts based on the use of hardware, unless that also involves third-party programs that give an advantage to a player. A single one-to-one bind is fine. Binding 11 different skills to one press of a key isn’t so fine.

So – is there are hard limit on skill bindings? Any guidelines people can follow to avoid being a false positive while trying to prevent RSI from all the button mashing?

If WoW can support all the rebindings and combos and macros people want and still control bots, and GW2 can’t, that says some things about GW2’s engine.

WoW macros don’t let the game play by itself while you’re AFK. Some keyboard software can be set up to play for you while AFK, that’s a huuuge difference.

Right. But Gaile’s post says that even just setting up a skill combo is potentially risky. WoW lets you set up skill combos. And given the number of people who are reporting that they were banned falsely for botting I’m a bit worried about false positives. Any new system has kinks to shake out, and ANet probably thought false positives were better than false negatives.

Yes, stop whining about game engine issues. It’s been 2.5 months and Anet’s close to figuring it out. L2P.

Letting ANet know problems exist is one thing. Making a post just to whine because another player was better is totally different.

Learning how to move in combat is hard! I’m not great at it, and I respect anyone who is. The OP explicitly acknowledges that the thief was better than he expected. The right response to “Someone is better than me” isn’t “That person must be handicapped!” It’s “I need to get better.”

I think making the rewards scale with level better would help. Maybe not all drops (don’t want to make jute even more expensive ), but gold and karma, with a chance of higher-level drops in addition to the regular drops. Since loot is already calculated individually this wouldn’t mess up other player’s loot tables.

There are definitely some areas I like more than others, but if the loot doesn’t scale with me I need to be playing in level-appropriate areas to get the gear and gold I need. That’s a really strong disincentive for traveling to other areas, especially when travel and repair cost so much.

ANet’s done a good job of putting gold sinks in the game to try to control inflation, but they added the gold sinks to just the wrong thing if they want players to be spread out taking part in the dynamic events throughout the map.

That said, my server can go from lots of people to absolutely no one depending on the time of day. So I really think that has a lot to do with it.

But yet the servers are “High” and “Full.”

A refresher course for player etiquette

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gilosean.3805

Gilosean.3805

I’ve done this accidentally once or twice – just recently when I didn’t even realize the mobs would be hostile, since similar mobs elsewhere in the area are friendly and have merchants. My character is very squishy, so I fled and wound up right on top of a guardian. I stayed to help clean up – it’s not that my char can’t fight, but close-quarter ambushes are something it just can’t handle very well.

The problem is that in a lot of places there isn’t a good way for non-melee characters to avoid close combat (at least in the areas I’ve been in). Squishy characters wind up having to do a lot of fleeing, and if other players are around there’s a chance of an unhappy accident. If there were more ways to flee quicker, or even just if trying to run in combat wasn’t an exercise in futility this would be a lot better. Or if mobs didn’t have incredibly long aggro ranges, or if the respawn rates weren’t insanely quick, or if we could map out of combat – there’s a bunch of ways for ANet to fix this. Until then I think we’re going to keep seeing accidental training as people try to deal with really massive numbers of quick-moving mobs when their character isn’t built for close combat.

That’s not what the OP is talking about though – that experience sounds really bad. I’m honestly interesting in knowing what guild this is so I can avoid them, they sound like terrible news. Or at least knowing the server so I know if I need to watch out for them or not. I understand the OP not wanting to run the risk of any more harassment, although I think that’s probably futile. Trolls and griefers always come back for more.

If anyone who likes getting mobs dropped on them is on my server, I’ll be happy to make your farming easier. Or maybe we should ask the Devs for a Looking For Train functionality?

Eh. You can test as much as you want – for months, even – and at the end something will still be buggy. It’s the nature of building something, there’s no way to work all the kinks out until real people have started playing in it.

I do programming for a living (not related to ANet at all), and I can’t tell you all the things people find. We have a dedicated testing firm specifically go over everything, and still something doesn’t work quite right for that 1% of the population because of wrong timing / driver issues / old version / dropped data / moon phase / whatever. ANet has been pretty good about fixing issues as they’re reported properly, so I’m not worried. Give it a year or 6 more months and most of the big bugs will be ironed out.

More non-violent events would be nice. Profession specific events would be great! There’s not a lot to do with the various crafting professions after they’re leveled.

Cooking contest events, maybe restaurant-needs-help DEs. Chefs can cook, non-chefs can serve, take orders. Artificers can mix drinks!

Dance-party events, see how many PCs can get their groove on.

Could PCs step in for trainers in their profession when the trainers need to take a lunch break? Number of students with stupid questions scales with number of PCs available.

There’s all kinds of things that can be added to the dynamic event framework that don’t involve hitting/spelling things until they stop moving.

The issue isn’t that people aren’t enjoying playing a thief. The issue is when playing with a thief. Me rolling something else doesn’t solve anything.

I don’t know if this rendering problem is the same as the general invisible enemies from WvW.

What it was like for me is: I am suddenly down to 1/3 health. I look around, see nothing, I take more damage, I see a flicker of a character and they’re gone. I realize it’s a thief, so I try to use an AoE. Then they flicker again. My attack didn’t happen. I try to move around until I can see where to target my next AoE. They appear briefly and I’m dead.

Repeat for the next 3 people who wander in.

Is that working properly or a bug? Either way, please fix.

I’ve been thinking that ANet needs some of these myself. There’s already dynamic events. How many different things can we fit into that framework?
DE dance party? Races? Teaching all those kids in Lion’s Arch how to behave when being escorted?

I’m (kind of) serious about that last one. Everyone gets frustrated with escort missions, so how many would like a chance to teach NPCs how to behave when being escorted? Then we have a ‘final exam’/escort mission to get the kids home, and everyone gets some coins and food from the kid’s parents.

Lion’s Arch has a ton of restaurants, and chefs need something to do with their craft… “Oh no, flu has hit the cook and servers at that bridge tavern over Trader’s Forum. Quick, Bob the restaurant owner needs everyone to come cook/fetch food/take orders!”

Real Pants?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Gilosean.3805

Gilosean.3805

I like a lot about the game, but ANet definitely needs to do better by their female characters with more varied clothing options, including options to not look like a stripper.

I just can’t get over that you think skirt = stripper. Most of the skirts (after the starter set) are longer and/or have tights/leggings that go along with them. You seem pretty uptight…it’s not real…so just stop tilting the camera up the skirt to actually “see” what’s up there?

It’s not skirt = stripper, it’s that the whole attitude towards female armor seems to be that more skin = good.

Most GW2 skirts would be fine IRL. I would wear several of them IRL, where we have gravity and skirts don’t flare up half as much and GW2 skirts do (or maybe it’s just my rig – anyway, the skirt flares up a lot). It’s the combo of how stupid my camera is and how unrealistic the skirt flare is that started my hunt for pants. Finding no pants (or only harem-style pants, which aren’t my thing either) for girls is what’s giving me the stripper-ific vibe.

I’ve tried changing the camera, but it never stays that way. Every time I get near an obstacle or something it goes nuts and then goes back to the original angle. That angle’s fine unless I’m running, but there’s a lot of time spent running in this game. It just bothers me. Maybe I’m missing a camera control option or something. Is there any way to set the camera angle and make it stay?

I mean, it’s not a game-ending problem, but it’s one of those constant annoyances where I keep feeling a little more irritated every time it happens. Couldn’t the dev team just have attached the camera to the head or something instead of the waist or wherever it’s at now?

AWESOME.

Not necessarily. The Devout set is level 20 crafted: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Devout_armor You might be able to find some on the Trading Post. If not, let me know.

EDIT: Here are two other crafted sets:
-Student (level 25): http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Student_armor
-Acolyte (level 40): http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Acolyte_armor
Keep in mind that you can use transmutation stones to transmute the appearance of a high-level item onto a lower-level one.

Oh, OK. That page earlier said Level 80 exotics, so I thought they were all only level 80. Sweet, I can even make the Student set this week.

Thanks so much people!

I found that in most cases playing a male character solves the problem of having too many dress and skirt options and not enough pants. There are some exceptions. And if Paragons ever make a come-back, well then you’ll be in serious trouble.

But I’m not playing a male character, and I don’t want to play a male character. Didn’t we get past the whole pants-are-for-men issue in the 70s?

I like a lot about the game, but ANet definitely needs to do better by their female characters with more varied clothing options, including options to not look like a stripper.

I don’t think I can get to level 80 very soon, and it just makes me feel creepy to be looking up some poor girls skirt while playing, and the camera won’t stay put so I can avoid that. I’ve got some Country Vital pants now that help a bit. They have skin-tight tights under a skirt.
