Well you can always reset your traits at any time if it’s not working out for you. Personally I leveled with points in Power/Precision like you are but I put quite a few points into Acrobatics. Dodging is pretty essential against PvE. The additional Vitality bonus is useful as well.

Otherwise Shadow Arts will give you some toughness if your getting blown away.

Backstab, time to nerf.

GlockworK.2954

I honestly don’t see the issue. First and foremost thieves do not automagically appear behind you when stealthed or teleporting (a big no no imo) second that isn’t very much health. My engineer has more health then that in his green explorer stuff. I always thought one of the goals of PVP was to put on something that gave extra health to improve survivability.

By default you have 5k more hp then gaurdians. Health
Guardians make up for this in “armor” and damage reduction, supposedly. But toughness does not affect conditions atm, and honestly I feel like some abilities.

Its not hard to get behind someone when they can pop stealth, teleport to you or behind you, then start

You might want to look at your link again. Thieves, Guardians and Elementalist all get the same base health pools. Everyone gains 10 health per vitality. You get heavy armor and we get medium armor.

And it’s not hard to realize that when you see a Thief disappear he’s probably going for your back, throw down an AoE or roll and be done with it.

Backstab, time to nerf.

GlockworK.2954

No it’s because if a thief is going full blown backstab build, he’ll be a glass cannon. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a thief rooted or blown with AoE and dies in less then 3 seconds because he was running a backstab build with 16k health and 1.6k toughness, if that.

Backstab, time to nerf.

Thieves are in the same boat. We have the worst health pools in the game. Your also wearing heavy armor.

Is trying to justify playing an OP profession so important to you? You keep lying to others and to yourself, that’s quite sad, really.

Don’t worry, nerfs will come and I will see you coming back to WoW or rerolling the next FotM, claiming that “class got useless”. Been there, seen that many times.

What? The last 3-4 patches of nerfing Thieves and their mechanics weren’t enough? You guys kittened about Heartseeker and it got crushed on targets above 50%.

What more do you want? We’re already gimmicky warriors with medium armor.

Lets Fix Venom skills together and make them fun!

in Thief

Posted by: GlockworK.2954

GlockworK.2954

The problem with venoms is that it’s pretty clear ANet balanced them around the grandmaster trait to share them with allies. Without that trait they are very underwhelming for the length of their cooldowns. With the trait they’re only great if you have 4 other players to make use of them AND wouldn’t otherwise hit the condition caps without them.

IMO venoms should have that grandmaster trait baked into their basic functionality. Warriors, guardians and rangers don’t have to trait to share their banners, shouts and spirits. I see no real reason why thieves couldn’t work the same way. It would also improve the thief’s group utility and make room for a new support option of some kind.

I concur. Excellent post good sir. Venomous Aura makes or breaks venoms.

The Thief isn't what a thief should be

in Thief

GlockworK.2954

I enjoy the thief mechanics as of right now. I’ve been playing around with D/D and love popping in and out of stealth. It’s like a free evade, couple that with some skill points into Acrobatics, and you’ve got an untouchable thief that evades just about everything.

Thief is probably one of the most mobile of the classes (imo at least). We can dip in and out of combat practically at will.

The damage nerf on some of skills hurt, but I would believe that Anet is working on a way to give us more sustained damage. PvE dungeons are the only place where my thief feels lackluster in the damage department. I make up for it with blinds, slows and some of the better combo fields (dark).

I find it VERY frustrating to kill off a dozen baddies only to turn around and find my rear already repopulated. If you throw in a veteran, it usually adds up to a death, because while I fight him, all of his friends I have killed just pop right back up. Add in the ridiculous density and there is no where to run because no matter which way you look it’s wall to wall baddies.

This is what bothers me the most. I just slayed a ton of enemies in an encampment or cave only to turn around and see that most of them have already respawned. In most cases I just say “screw it” and teleport out.

I hope they tone it back a bit once this initial surge of players start to get spread out.

"Drop Cap"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: GlockworK.2954

GlockworK.2954

IIRC, in Guild Wars there was a mechanic like this to prevent bots from farming just one area for hours at a time.

If we have something similar in GW2, I can’t say I like it. If I want to sit in one zone for hours on end just killing monsters I shouldn’t be punished with no drops at all.

If you’re still in the zone, try going to a different one (outside of Orr) and see if you start getting drops again. Then go back and see if it resets.

Why I am not convinced about GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: GlockworK.2954

GlockworK.2954

Great thing about this game?

You can leave and come back later. There is no harm in finding that a game (newly released at that) lacks in certain areas. I have my beefs about some things in GW2 but I’ve found plenty of other things to do.

Crafting right now is by far my most favorite thing. Finding new recipes or creating new ones that you didn’t know before. The hunt for rare dyes. Competing in WvWvW is amazingly fun (don’t let the zergers sway you, you can play it tactically), brings some memories of DAoC back for me. I like fully exploring zones for 100% completion.

I haven’t really bothered to use the Trading Post yet, stuff like this never really interested me anyways, but you sound like a friend of mine that ended up having over four characters with capped Gold on his characters (he worked the auction house quite a bit in WoW).

But like I said, and others, take a break and come back refreshed. Or maybe try out another class and definitely try out classes you would never play before. I have always picked up a Warrior/Barbarian archetype and hated stealth classes, this time around I fell in love with my Thief with it’s ability to Steal and pop in and out of battle quickly.

Holy Trinity Removal

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: GlockworK.2954

GlockworK.2954

So everyone wanting the Trinity back you’re willing to:

a) sit in a que for over an hour for a tank
b) sit in a que for over 30 mins for a healer
c) stopping a dungeon run because you need to kick a bad DPS (not enough DPS or just stands in fire)
d) or sit in a city hub spamming “LF XYZ class” filling chat with useless drivel

That’s really where we would be again. So unless you guys have a better idea of how to go about it, I like the combat system as is.

Stealth issues

in Thief

Posted by: GlockworK.2954

GlockworK.2954

Stealth is nerfed down as is, with the “Reveal” mechanic coming out of stealth and then tack on abilities that are locked on to you regardless of going into stealth.

So I wholeheartedly agree. I don’t know if it’s something that ANet can fix or if it’s built into the engine and making targets completely disappear resulting in a failed channel or traveling to the location the Thief used Stealth.

Stealth needs a buff. Either get rid of the “Reveal” mechanic or cause channeled abilities to cancel on stealth. This heat seeking missile effect is annoying as hell.

Thief Auto Attack

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: GlockworK.2954

GlockworK.2954

You must be talking about auto attacking option (as opposed to the option that turns it off and you have to keep pressing the button) right?

I’ve considered it on my Thief. Not so much in the respect that it would break stealth (auto attack turns off automatically) but in the respect of the final auto attack has a cast bar (like .5 seconds) so it can delay an ability from firing off.

I guess it really depends if you like smashing the “1” key over and over or prefer the auto attack.

Game not using 100% of gpu or cpu

The game doesn’t seem to be architected for keeping more than 2 cores completely busy in many situations. It does spawn a lot of threads, but as in many games one of them does much more work than the others, so the engine’s running speed is largely limited by that. The other threads’ tasks are not heavy enough to completely occupy other cores, so the CPU doesn’t look very busy overall.

And when that one thread is running slowly enough on the CPU, the GPU becomes starved for instructions and ends up idling part of the time.

I think this is what’s happening in your screenshot; your FPS is similar to what others have been reporting as well.

This man knows what he’s talking about. What we’re looking at is a waiting game – waiting for A.Net to optimize the game/load across more CPU cores, ways to offload CPU tasks to the GPU, etc. Plain and simple – it just isn’t optimized. And that’s unfortunate. Hopefully A.Net will take the time to really optimize this game soon, as MANY people (even with very high end systems) are suffering from lackluster performance right now.

I guess it could be worse, we could be back to the days of the beta weekends when the GPU wasn’t used at all. Haha. GoGo raw CPU horsepower.

Speaking of this. Someone posted earlier an application that would go out and look for any “parked” cores. Website below. I’ll probably try it myself later.

http://www.coderbag.com/Programming-C/Disable-CPU-Core-Parking-Utility

As for the WvWvW, can’t say I get the same FPS even with my setup. Only thing I can think of (I say this because I’ve set the graphics slider to performance with no FPS gain) is to turn off High-Res textures on players.

@OP

Since you mention others with similar setups but worse performance (compared to theirs).

Have you tried doing a clean uninstall of the video drivers and then reinstalling them? (i.e. uninstall drivers, reboot then reinstall with one more reboot afterwords) Could be a software bug somewhere in there.

GlockworK.2954

Well let’s go over some basic stuff first.

Video drivers up to date? I heard there was an ATI/AMD beta driver that fixed some issues with newer cards.

Motherboard drivers (including BIOS firmware) up to date?

To be honest, I think it’s got something to do with the 955. I had one myself during the beta weekends and had ‘ahem’kitten poor performance with a combination of a 5850.

I’d also suggest getting rid of any overclocks (like your CPU). I’ve seen instances in certain games where performance suffers when you start pushing your equipment. City of Heroes is one instance off the top of my head.

Edit: Other then that, we have to realize that this game is probably going to continue to get enhancements to make the game engine more efficient. I never bothered to check what my new stuff is producing (i5-3570k and GTX 680) so I may do so when I get home just to get an idea of performance since you mentioning your 7950 (which definitely should be doing well) only 50% give or take GPU utilization.

Edit dos: Looking back on this now, typically when you see your GPU % throttling it’s because something else in the system can’t keep up. I’m beginning to think it’s your 955 again.

You should try asking for advice in killing those two professions in the thread opener.

Otherwise it just looks like you’re QQ’ing.

Learn other professions and their abilities otherwise you’ll always end up saying “Wtf?!” and not learning anything.

Force thieves to use their utility skills early (CC does wonders against thieves, we get eaten alive when we can’t move) and Guardians spec’d to tank can’t hurt you anyways unless you guys were standing in it’s face blindly smashing keys when he starts blocking. This goes back to learning other professions and their abilities.

I build custom Desktops as a hobby and the fact you title yourself PC enthusiast and over clocker while using a Alien-ware is degrading on the other hand decent list of helpful stuff but would be better with links and post to how-to’s and wider range of subjects other then clean PC, cool PC, and less programs…

Running 3rd party software like Gamebooster is simple for the people without major PC experience and shutdowns all auto update features rather easily without getting into MSconfig. Google is always a good friend for performance related topics and walk though and major forums have plenty of guides.

It is not necessary to trash Dell/Alienware. Everyone is welcome to their own opinions. <ins>The fact is that most high end pcs have essentially the same components in them.</ins> The primary difference is configuration. I have had zero issues with my alienware factory overclock. Alienwares active thermal cooling is great for making games like GW2 run faster and more stable.

This is where I’ll disagree. You may THINK you’re getting the same components but I would wager you’re not. Most times when you turn to a manufacturer for a PC they tend to us inferior/lesser quality of parts to keep the overhead down and the profit up.

I almost guarantee if you cracked open the side of your case you will find some generic parts. Mostly in the form of PSU and/or motherboard.

Proper air ventilation and circulation are part of the equation.

Current OP class ?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: GlockworK.2954

GlockworK.2954

Good luck trying to face roll with a thief in PvP. They actually require skill to stay alive long enough to do damage.

I agree, thiefs lack mobility, scape skills and have the lowest amount of base health in the game. The only way a thief would be viable right now would be if they could kill any class they 1v1 with 2-3 shots. And i mean, even if it was this way, if that other class dodged even one of those the initiative you would spend would not regenerate for another minute (like every class) to do that amount of burst again, so you wouldnt be able to just keep atacking until it died. when that burst fails its not like you can just run away invisible to recuperate and strike again without notice. Thief is underpowered, and i mean severely underpowered.

I wouldn’t say they’re overpowered (I main one btw) but they definitely can push out front load damage if played right. And I definately agree that if our burst fails we’re sitting ducks unless we can reset (wait for cooldowns) to have another go at it.

For those complaining about Heartseeker spam, go out in PvP and try that. Good luck, you will need it. If you’re running into thieves that heartseeker spam, use a CC and /laugh. Seriously, one dimensional thieves are really that easy to take down.

Laughably though, according this thread, everyone thinks the grass is greener on the other side of the fence which in my opinion is great! If everyone thinks another profession is OP then ArenaNet did a pretty good job of balancing.

The grass (profession) is always greener when you water (diverse tactics) it.

GlockworK.2954

What midnight says, but the caltrops skill is a waste imo, I’d much rather use something else and have the caltrops-on-dodge trait. As for the rest it’s just a lot of running. Once you get the hang of it you can solo hard mobs even with adds.

Just so this doesn’t discourage any thiefs from the skill, the utility Caltrops is amazingly effective, where as the trained caltrops on dodge ability, while useful, is very watered down from its utility counterpart.

Yeah, found that out playing with the different utility skills.

The trait for dropping caltrops fills maybe half (being generous here, maybe even 1/3) of what the utility skill for caltrops. Also it only lasts 3 seconds as opposed to 14.

If you like dodging and kiting enemies (pistols/bow), traiting for caltrops would be desired.

Don’t you need 150 trait points to unlock all traits? How is it possible to have them all unlocked?

BTW, is there a way to change your mind and reallocate all trait and skill points?

Thanks.

You only can earn 70 trait points (from 11-80 at 1/level) so you won’t have them all unlocked. Would make characters rather, boring wouldn’t you say?

Also yes there is a way to reset trait skills but you cannot reset skills points. You will get enough skill points to actually have all your skills unlocked. Heck Legendary weapons require you to spend 200 skill points, so you’ll have more then enough.

Back to the trait skills reset, you can find your trainer at any major city or minor (like Lion’s Arch). On your map, they will have a little book icon, and only your class is shown so it’s not confusing. When you speak with them, choose the second option to reset traits. This does include a cost however, but at level 42 it only costs 92 copper (scales with level) to reset.

take your “I’m bad so I’m going to cry about everything” talk somewhere else.

Grow up. Infact, i’m doing very well in PvP. This downed state is useless though. No where near as hard to stop as mesmers for example.

Maybe i’m not using the downed state correctly.. anyone got any tips of how they use it in PvP effectively?

For the most part you want to save your Shadow Escape when someone is about to finish you. Wait for them to start casting, SE away (preferably around a corner/bush/etc.) and pop Smoke Bomb. Proceed to start casting Bandage and profit.

Our Trail of Knives is awesome if there are some allies around, since you can literally apply cripple to enemies 100% of the time. Although it completely sucks if it’s just one enemy and no one around to help since it doesn’t bounce. Throwing a knife at a distant enemy coming to finish you is always a plus when it comes to escaping.

Now if you’re getting downed in the open field (no cover/bushes/rocks/etc.) you’re probably screwed. But then again fighting out in the open is not playing to the Thief’s strengths which is to surprise and burst down enemies.
