Transfer down, problem solved.
Anet obviously doesn’t care about WvW. Either that or they can’t afford to care. Which I find hard to believe with all the time and love they continue to pour into the living story. Which means they might care, but just not enough to actually do anything.
Either way, same end result for the rest of us.
If you are outnumbered, then you are doing it right.
Here’s my suggestion: action on previous CDIs before more CDIs.
Outnumbered buff should contribute to a temporary lowering of transfer costs to the server during that time.
Wait until your server is blue, it’ll be much easier to get those points then.
The tiers above you don’t need any help. It’s the tiers below you that do.
Put (none) for ehmry bay. SoS bought all their wvw guilds.
thats horrible, what happened? o.o
Basically most of the day crew got tired of having no night crew.
Now Ehmry Bay has pretty much no crew at all. vOv
Send 50 to each T8 server, then congratulate yourself on making WvW a better place.
A balanced population across the servers would be nice.
Ah well, dreams are free.
If there is still concern surrounding how seriously we take community collaboration then please do take the time to think about how much impact the community has had on the working of this game over the year.
Honestly, the only thing I can think of where the community got what they wanted (more or less) was with the Obsidian Sanctum for GvGs. And that only happened because there was no containing the unholy rage at what happened beforehand.
So what I take from this is, that the only reason you still haven’t acted on the WvW population balance CDI, is because we haven’t gotten angry enough for you yet? v(O_o)v

No.
Because there is no incentive not to transfer to the winning server during the tournament, further imbalancing already severely imbalanced server populations.
And then when the tournament ends and we go back to regular WvW, anyone who hasn’t already transferred will be burned out from trying to carry a hopelessly outnumbered server, and will then transfer as well.
Everything about the tournament is totally wrong and will continue to damage the long term future of WvW as a viable game mode.
I love how T1 – T3 has become even more imbalanced since this thread was made.
There’s another way to bypass the problem of queues.
Transfer down.
Make your server the biggest, and people will stay, then people will come in from others.
FYP.
I mean, what types of players?
The types that are too stubborn to transfer down for the good of the game.
wvw has never been a Fair and Balanced 24 hour war,
Correct. But it could so easily have been, if only Anet cared.
Quote:“How was this a good idea to promote server population equality? I remember distinctly that one of the coming goals is to try and equalize server population.”
Strange. From what I remember , the goals is to ensure stacked server has something to do while waiting in queue.
Which effectively removes the only reason people had left to transfer down.
RIP WvW.
Anyone who is serious about balancing server population only needs to do one thing.
Transfer down.
Anet will never fix this issue because fairweathers will always pay them to transfer their own way out of trouble.
There’s nothing wrong with the downed state.
Anyone who complains about being outnumbered can either sPvP, GvG or transfer to a lower tier.
On a scale of 1 to 8, how much do you enjoy your roaming?
Pick the tier that matches your answer.
Your timing is suspiciously impeccable, heh. Three of our biggest WvW guilds are leaving the server this week.
Likes:
1. Outsmarting my enemies.
2. Being outsmarted by enemies, since I get to learn something which makes me a better player.
Dislikes:
1. The fact that both of the above almost never happen, because either I have a zerg or they do, but never at the same time. Server population imbalance is destroying WvW, and Anet refuses to do anything about it.
2. Lack of rewards for defending. Outmanned buff is also woefully insufficient.
3. Cheese tactics in general. PU mesmers/GS warriors/most thieves/anyone running stunlock, zoom hacks, golem rushes, etc.
Tier 4 is death for as long as Dragonbrand continue to be there.
Honestly, when GW2 gets released in China, they should just move SoS and DB to a new Asian bracket with 1/4/7/10 Chinese servers and merge Kaineng/Devonas on NA.
1. When are you going to follow up on the world population CDI and actually do something about the issue?
2. When are you going to follow up on the world population CDI and actually do something about the issue?
3. When are you going to follow up on the world population CDI and actually do something about the issue?
Furthermore, show me A SINGLE MMO that has introduced this “Collaborative Development Initiative”
EVE Online has a Council of Stellar Management.
Any solution that proposes more NPC involvement is a crutch and won’t actually solve anything.
Anet needs to do more to encourage the players to spread out/transfer down instead.
For those wondering, I play engineer, I prefer to roam, I’m currently on JQ, and yes, I take bribes in the form of cookies.
I play engineer, I prefer to roam, I’m currently on JQ,
I’m currently on JQ,
JQ,
An inauspicious beginning.
It’s not meant to be this stupid kittening PPT meta with map politics, buying guilds and throwing matches along with the other myriad of bullkitten I’ve had to endure playing in NA T1 for the past year.
Nobody has to “endure” T1. There are seven other tiers, you know…
The only thing holding me back from a server swap (to a more average server) is my excellent Blackgate guild.
I’m pretty sure Blackgate doesn’t have a monopoly on excellent guilds.
In answer to the original question and going by Anet’s track record to date, I’m going to suggest somewhere around the 12th of never.
The matchup system shouldn’t have to be a choice between variety and competitiveness.
If server populations were properly balanced across the board, then we could have both.
Otherwise it’s an insanely unnecessary amount of people k-training us on IoJ and no one else takes a dent of damage.
Current PPT as of 2am server time.
DB: +515
IoJ: +150
EBay: +30
Just sayin’.
In most games, you go out, and you have really fun tasks, occasionally, that you get to do, and the rest of the game is this boring grind to get to the fun stuff.
I liked this post. Then I liked it again. Hey I liked it again, that’s great.
Anyone else tired of the frequent PvDoor (that all the servers are doing) and massive zergs (that all the servers are doing)?
Yes.
Shorter matches is not the answer. Server population balance is.
It was nothing personal against SBI. It was simply because Yaks and EBay saw an opportunity to help each other out in the overall league standings. Had this been a regular Glicko matchup, it would never have happened.
Fix the server population imbalance issue so that every matchup isn’t a guaranteed blowout like it is now.
Yes, I know this could be said about any matchup system and not just the leagues, but that doesn’t make it any less true. No system can cover up the fact that some servers are grapefruits, and others are just grapes.
DB I understand you want EB to take second, but do you really need 60+ to kill 20 people?
Honestly, 60+ to kill 20 has been going on since WvW began. Also, while I think I’ve seen DB ignore EB to take out CD, you can’t be sure. It could be that the close match up rallied EB’s defenses.
I’ve certainly been more anxious about it.
Bolded the truth. It’s as simple as that.
DB haven’t discriminated either way. I commanded for 10 hours for EBay last night, and I saw DB wipe our BL and then CD’s, just steamrolling everything in their path, bouncing from map to map. They were running two zergs much of the night that I saw, one mainly TFV, the other mixed tags. Sometimes we were dodging one or both of these zergs, sometimes it was CD’s zerg of KoME + mixed tags, sometimes we were dodging everybody.
In any case, I can assure that there’s no way in hell I – and many others who were with me last night – would have stayed up if the match wasn’t as close as this. As a server EBay is known for losing momentum during the week, so what we seem to be achieving right now is as unusual for us as it is special.
Sticking to the lines of transfers, what are reasonable restrictions to place on players after they transfer? No WvW for the rest of the match? No WvW for 24 hours? Would that help any or would it actually exacerbate the problem?
Whatever you might implement in this area, only implement it for people transferring up. Remember the overall aim here is to encourage people to spread out; there must be as few barriers to transferring down as possible.
So, if prices for server transfers were based on WvW population, what would a fair distribution of costs look like from the lowest population servers to the highest? Keep in mind that making it completely impossible to transfer to a server puts a burden on other players. That doesn’t mean that you couldn’t have an incredibly high price, just that completely blocked isn’t an option.
Primarily it should be influenced by the target server’s Glicko, but the player’s own experience in WvW should count for something as well, i.e. a strict PvEr with no achievement points in WvW could transfer to the same server for less, since they won’t be influencing any match outcomes anyway.
So something like:
cost = max( server_glicko x 2 + player_wvw_achievement_points x 5 – 2000, 0 )
would be fine by me. You can alter the multipliers depending on how influential you want Glicko vs personal WvW points to be.
Without the Glicko factor, there’s just no reason for losing servers to keep turning up anymore, result = matchups become even more imbalanced. Who could have guessed? >_>
Someone hear me out please. Last night, 40+ DB took EB keep in 3 minutes.
This happens every day and night in every matchup, since just about all of them these days are complete blowouts.
Welcome to WvW.
Transfer down, problem solved.
Broken for me on Ehmry Bay BL. Got both key parts, opened the door, open chest, get loot, no achievement, still have key parts.
Relogged, the key parts are not a display bug, I still have them. Go back to the door, opens again, chest still open from earlier, no loot, still no achievement. vOv
I’ve been casually browsing this thread all day and I don’t know if anyone brought this up but I’m seeing alot of mentions of perhaps making the “off-peak” times less influential on the outcome of a match.
Speaking as an Oceanic player this makes me a little sad. I don’t think punishing “nighttime” players by making their contributions worth less than NA players will benifit the game at all. It WOULD probley fix the population imbalance, but only because most of the non-NA players wouldn’t bother playing anymore…
It’s not a punishment, it’s a correction and a badly needed one at that.
I’m an oceanic and my view is the exact opposite of yours. Our contributions at an individual level are currently worth way more than those in US time, because our total numbers are fewer, yet the map size and PPT gain stays the same 24/7. That’s not balanced.
Everyone – no matter what part of the world they are from – should have the same degree of influence over their PPT. In busier times, PPT should tick faster. If a server’s oceanic population is 1/5 the size of their American crew, then PPT should tick at 1/5 the speed. Simple, effective, balanced.
Good ideas:
- An accurate WvW population indicator, based on a server’s total hours spent in WvW in the last 24 hours. By all means keep the existing overall indicator as well, but base the actual transfer cost on the WvW measure. Medium pop and below are always free to transfer to.
- Allow a guild to retain its influence etc when transferring, but only when transferring down.
- Scale the PPT timer to be based on the smallest of the three server’s WvW presence at any given time, recalculating at every tick. Example: reset night on T1 there might be 10 mins between ticks, night time on T8 during the week might be an hour.
- Whenever a server has more than 50% of PPT, players on the other two servers appear as yellow to each other instead of red and there are no rewards for taking “yellow” server objectives.
- Accurate queue timers, and the ability to queue multiple maps at once.
- Outmanned buff needs more granularity, i.e. instead of simply being outmanned or not outmanned, scale the buff for more rewards the more outmanned you are.
Bad ideas:
- Anything involving more Siegerazer-style NPCs. A balanced player coverage should be the goal here; NPC-based solutions are a crutch and won’t solve anything.
- The league system. Server rankings absolutely must determine match-ups on a weekly basis, otherwise dying servers only die faster.
- The edge of the mists. T1 players should be encouraged to transfer down, not be rewarded with a new map for their stubbornness.

Enjoy those moments and not the ones with the huge population disparity.
This is somewhat difficult to do when all my moments are the ones with the huge population disparity.
Wanted: oceanics with balls.
Then that’s where you need to make a decision as a player if you’re playing in the oceanic time zone.
Every oceanic who transfers to a server with more oceanics only adds to the greater problem.
