The developers recently announced that :

Objectives upgrades will no longer be automatic based on time. They will upgrade based on dolyaks that reach them. Smaller groups can now prevent an objective from upgrading by preventing dolyaks from reaching that objective.

This is definitively a step in the right direction but it’s still missing : player involvement. The upgrade are still automatic and this is not a good thing. There need to be a part where the players do some interaction in order for the upgrade to start.

Some players have already suggested that someone need to talk to a NPC in order to start the upgrade but this is not enough. Talking to a NPC involve only 1 player while WvW is a group activity. We need something in which everyone around could participate.

My suggestion is to add an easy gathering event similar to the gathering events in EotM in order to start each tier of upgrade at an objective.

This would be quick, would enable everyone to participate, would bring back player involvement in the upgrade process, would give something to do to defender while they upgrade their BL and would also give them easy reward.

It was called the New Game Enhancement.

Best read in a while.

I feel like this is exactly what is happening to the game right now or more specifically to WvW. Been a WvW addict for 3 years and I mean it, I was litterally addicted to this game mode. But lately, I would rather do anything else than WvW. I no longer feel any need to play it and the few times I have tried since HoT it’s been a painful experience. And a sad one…

Sure there are still the objectives and the sieges are there but something changed. I don’t know if it’s the gameplay changes or the community that changes, but any time I logged into a WvW map in the past months and especially lately, I had this feeling : “This is not the game I used to love to death”. And I can’t stand that feel. I don’t know why, I just know that I don’t find it fun anymore.

Actually, I think it was a bug that opened access to areas before the required upgrades were obtained.

Hardly possible…

You can reach any place in the guild hall with decoration which is a very good thing. It gives the opportunity for players to build all kind of amazing jumping puzzles and fancy places to explore. I like my hall open.

They made massive changes to the guild hall at least 2 times already. They seem to be doing these updates on a 2 weeks basis at the moment. The more notable changes are located at the top of the guild hall. They added an entire section with a big tree in it than remove the tree next update and added another big section elsewhere.

I lost a few decorations in those changes but since I litterally spent weeks to build my jumping puzzles, I’m not going to press that reset button anytime soon. It would be too much work.

Btw, if you want to visit the top of the guild hall and are confident in your jumping puzzle skills give me a call. I built 4 different puzzle already ranging from easy to nearly impossible. No one has been able to beat the hard one yet

Id try it! Im really curious but dont have the gear (I am making minstrel now!). You should strive for a 100% protection uptime for the team (2 minstril tempest will do the job). Invest in toughness and multiple healers (again, minstrel tempests + a druid or 2?). Vitality isnt needed, since the toughness and protection will prevent you from being 1-shot, and it will be healed up before you go to low anyway. Add in blinks and other movement skills, since you cannot make an error regarding the green circles/glowing pizza pieces. Stat combis would be Knight’s, Cavalier’s, Minstrel’s, Trailblazer’s and Celestial (or something like that).

Druid with spirit are a good source of healing and protection. Spirit survive very well during the fight and give 1.25 seconds of protection every 3 seconds to 5 players + 4 seconds every 10 seconds on attack and that’s without boon duration from gear. So 2 ranger is enough for 100% protection uptime in your party.

Guardian can easily achieve 100% protection uptime too with shout and hammer auto attack.

Don’t forget the new ways to take flat damage reduction, like mussel food and scrapper runes (-17% damage under the right circumstances). It might be possible, otherwise why would have Anet lowered the enrage damage boost to 200% from 500% in the beta.

You got something there.

-10% mussel food, -7% scrapper runes, -33% protection (100% uptime) = -50%

50% of 200% is 100% so it is tankable most likely. Add a ton more healing to what raid usually have and you are in business.

More of an “exploration puzzle” then a jumping puzzle, as my guildies and I set out with the intention of looking at the areas we can’t access til guild level 40. But we did get to the arch at the top of the crystal room and put a flag there to mark an end point

It does need tier 3 gliding however.

We already know there’s a hidden pirate cave behind a waterfall in Gilded Hallow where we can decorate it to act as a lounge of some sort, or a bar, or whatever we want it to be. So to answer your question, yes there is at least one, and I’m expecting that there are many many hidden areas in them :p

The Home Borderland Concept : Good or Bad? [Merged]

Recently, I see a ton of thread complaining about the new map, how they don’t like the design and what not. But, for me, it seems nearly everyone is missing the bigger picture.

Is the home borderland concept a bad idea from the start?

Problem #1 : Having a home borderland in a game mode that strives to get 24/7 action is just counter productive.

The whole point of the home borderland is to lock down your map, meaning that you control everything on it, upgrade everything and siege everything. Might still sounds good at this point, but when you realize that what this promote is a gameplay where every server is sitting on their fully capped map thinking : “Is someone coming to attack us soon? It’s been 1 hour since the last attack…” you get how bad the idea is. The end result of controlling 100% of the map is to kill the activity on that map. WvW needs more constant actions not map lock down.

Problem #2 : The population of lower tiers just cannot fill 4 maps.

It’s just the reality since the game launched and will likely not change. Then, why do we have a map that require 3 copies of itself in a same match up? This is a problem that should have never existed. If a tier only have the population to make 2 maps active, they should only have 2 maps. This would solve a big part of your constant problems with server population and complaints about empty map.

HoT would have been a perfect opportunity to change that system and design a new map that like EBG is symmetrical, to allow you to adjust the number of maps according to the population in the tier. But NO… I just don’t get it. Why would anyone willingly shoot itself in the foot?

There are many other points I would like to discuss about home bl but for the sake of brevity I won’t expand on them. Still, let me ask you another question. Does it make sense to you that a map (home bl) who doesn’t even come close to the level of activity of another map (ebg) count for more in the match up score? You get more points holding your home borderland than by holding your corner of Eternal Battleground, still every single day or time of the day, I see way more players in my corner of EBG than in my home bl. Go figure…

Meaning, should a guild focus on leveling 1-2 scribe or can everyone in the guild start a scribe since it’s the new cool thing?

I have been busy lately in real life so I didn’t have the time to do much on site in the last weeks… Still, I have a few things that I’m working on or planning to :

- Graph for timezone rating to make it easier to visualize (this one is nearly done)
- Graph for prediction
- Graph for timezone history (as requested by Baron Oakley)
- K/D by timezone is interesting too so I will add that to my list.
- Fixing bug in live map RI timer for those that their computer doesn’t have the same time as the rest of the world…

But the most pressing one is probably to prepare the new live map for the expansion :S

When EotM was released, WvW lost a big chunk of its population and an entire group of players; the karma trainers. WvWers really like to complain about them but even if they don’t realize it they love them. WvW lost a part of his soul and lost his way to get new blood into the game mode. Nearly every WvWer started as a k-trainer but now the train is gone…

Like the idea myself, but I’d prefer an actual dynamic….

Personally I prefer the idea of dynamic borders through all tiers, as it would solve some ppt issues as well.

EB would be the fixed point thats open 24/7 while others open based on total current population. A closed border would have frozen ppt. The max tick possible would be dramatically reduced outside primetime. This would mean a considerable redesign though (cant have home borders).

..yeah that, thank you for posting it Dawdler! I made a long overly verbose post about this once before, but you’re much better at summarise it than I’ll ever be >_<

(You can even just disable the PPT on the maps that are off, it won’t really make much difference. Just base the glicko gains on percentages instead of the static numbers. You can take that even further and have it affect all PPT so there is no diffrence in point gains for offtime vs prime time as well, depending on how you want it.)

Would think it sad if T8 lost access to BL though.

Yeah dynamic would probably be better in term of activity but brings other problems. For example, server that capitalize on “off hours” to reset upgrade would now lose that advantage. Don’t know how I feel about that…

Yeah, the balance issue is kinda problematic. Borderland map are design to favor the “home” server.

One could wish that they learned from their first BL map and the fact that it’s empty most of the day on more than half the tiers and that they would design the new map as a 3 way symetrical like EBG/EotM to be able to change the number of maps per tier but…

Good news is that they have started to admit they can’t fill all servers. Some servers are ranked medium now instead of very high

It feels like there should be less maps on the lower tiers in WvW.

4 maps is only useful for the first 2-3 tiers that can have queue on several maps at a time. My server has been from tier 4 to tier 8 and back to tier 4 in the last 2 years and here is what I noticed :

Tier 8 : Cannot queue any map even on reset
Suggestion : Only EBG should be enough

Tier 7-6 : Can queue one map at best on reset. The rest of the week there is no queue at all
Suggestion : EBG + One Borderland

Tier 5-4 : Often able to queue 1 map during the week and can queue 2 maps on reset.
Suggestion : EBG + Two Borderlands

Tier 3-2-1 : Can queue multiple maps
Suggestion : EBG + Three Borderlands

It would feel more right if it was something like that. Lower tiers just don’t have the population to cover all 4 maps. When you force them to spread on all 4 maps you are basically telling them that what they should enjoy is empty WvW were the only thing you have to fight are doors, walls and NPC.

It would also give a “reward” to climb up in the tiers. If you want to have more maps and possibly a home bl every week, you have to climb up in the tiers.

I know that HoT is coming and it will bring a lot of players but from the reports I got so far it seems like the map is gigantic which will spread the players even further. Might not be a problem at first because of the expansion hype, but when the hype will go down, covering those 3 gigantic borderlands will be an even bigger problem than it was before.

So, I think that having less map on lower tiers would go a long way to make WvW more lively for them.

Oh ok, you think it would be better if it was split by tier. It is currently an all server graph (even if it doesn’t look like it…)

If I transform it into a one graph per tier, one thing that I worry about is that for some tier the server ratings are very close together while on others that are very far. So for example, the range between the highest rating and lowest rating in tier1 could be 100 ratings while on tier 8 it would be 600 ratings. Since each graph would have the same height, you won’t be able to easily compare the graph from one tier with the graph of another.

I’d just make the lines a bit thicker so they’re easier to differentiate.

Well, there is also the problem that there is only 3 different colors for the line currently so it’s hard to guess to which server a particular red line belong. I thought about putting a different color for every server but then it takes a very long time to manually match each server to each color and to see which lines (servers) are in a match up together…

Is there going to be a “timeline” for the timezone coverage? So a month or year from now we can look back at the coverage for this week kinda thing?

Yes, it’s going to be one of 3 sections that are already planned. I already saved all the data of the previous week in the database so we got nearly 2 months of historical data. Just need to find the time to build the UI for it.

How is your server's WvW community?

Match up thread on gw2wvw.net are not really representative of a server community. Far from it.

To get a better feel you should try to find the server forum, enter their TS to talk to a few of them and/or get an account (f2p?) on that server to see how the map is.

Personally, I would not ignore the guilds either because they form that community and chance are that you will join one sooner rather than later. Better make sure that there is one that fit your style.

Yes, it will make the glicko wall even higher.

If you want to reduce the glicko wall and have a 6 servers rotation you need to let YB gain rating and BG need to lose some rating. Then it’s a process that you will need to repeat for many weeks : the tier 1 server dropping to tier 2 server needs to lose rating in order to reduce tier 1 average rating and boost tier 2 average rating.

It’s a process that will take many weeks but it’s possible to get a 6 servers rotation without ANET intervention and this week is the start of it if you want it.

Put a cap on the highest rating and the lowest rating a server can have.

For example, the highest could be 2000 and the lowest could be 1000.

Would mean nothing for EU – just two servers are below 1000 and none are above 2000.

If you guys are really planning to move, it feels to me like we should try to create what tier 1/2 will never be able to create because they are stuck in glicko hell.

A 6 servers match up rotation in tier 3/4 with all servers being nearly the same strength

Only problem is that it would still be hard as hell to bring the average glicko of both tier close together → It’s a process that take months without ANET intervention.

OP, You can already see the ratings of server by timezone.

It splits the day in 8 period of 3 hours and calculate the rating for each period, just like you want to do.

It might not be official but if you just want to care about the timezone in which you play and see how good you are then everything is already there

For example, DB is ranked 13 overall (top of tier 5) but are ranked 10 in SEA timezone (top of tier 4).

YB will never get to tier 1 in the next months, tier 1 servers are very close in points. Only if 1 server start a mass exodus which wont happen due to transfers lock.
So if you transfer to YB you got pwned by arena net and you are doomed to pvdoor for a year

Not true, YB has an ~10% change of rolling into T1 replacing either BG , TC and even JQ. But as Ken is in holiday we don’t know the exact numbers.

Match-glicko = Glicko + RND(0.45deviation + 10)

so the maximum glicko-difference the random-variation can bridge is 132pts at moment.

YB is 91 Glicko-Points behind TC and 97 pts behind BG and 116pts behind JQ http://www.gw2wvw.org/
So it is possible for all of them to be replaced by YB currently.

Now you could start calculating (I am to lazy) how likely it is for YB to roll up ahead of each of the T1 server, and if you add these numbers up (they are really independend), you get the total probability of YB being in T1 next match.
