I’m a terrible altaholic and realized early on that I can’t afford two crafts on one character, so I just abandoned leatherworking on my engineer and stuck to -only- leatherworking on my thief. With one craft per character I can actually level the craft alongside them with virtually no extra grinding for blue mats. Been working fine so far.

Almost any skill can be set to autoattack. It’s just that kits don’t have the first skill set to auto by default, you have to CTRL+RMB every time you swap to the kit.

Grenades can’t autoattack because they’re ground-targeted.

It’d be cool if there was some kind of “bonus” fight against Fallen Zhaitan. We’re never going to get a real fight when we’re dealing with a half-mile dragon but they could still pull something similar to the zone bosses with his fallen remains or something. Imagine a Shadow Behemoth on steroids, dragging its mangled torso slowly around a huge zone and screaming and summoning undead everywhere and still putting up a hell of a fight because it’s a gatdang elder dragon.

EDIT: I just realized how perfectly ironic it would be to fight “Fallen” Zhaitan after seeing his “Risen” minions forever. Literally falling against his will and getting torn apart by lesser beings seems like a fitting end to the one who forces others to rise against their will and fight for him.

“Also side note – you have to be really really careful with the engineer when it comes to balancing, we can get absurdly powerful really easy because of the flexibility of the class.”

This is the big thing. We have so gatdang many skills and abilities that interact and chain with each other that individual ones can’t be too powerful, lest the whole package become overwhelmingly powerful in the right hands. Unfortunately, that also makes each one seem underwhelming and the simpler builds tend to perform a little under par.

We’re forever going to be the most polarizing class because of that. Difficult to balance at all, and nearly impossible to balance for both sides at once.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t fire bullets from my other gun because it’s built to shoot fire instead.

I’d love to see Poison Dart Volley un-nerfed so it actually hits beyond point-blank range. That one change would make the pistols a totally solid mid-range weapon. Wouldn’t hurt if they also fixed Explosive Shot to splash the bleed like it says it does, maybe tack on another second of bleed or so.

“What are you talking about??? 4/5 abilities on Mesmers long sword abilities are 1200 range.”

That’s exactly my point. Someone new to mesmer is going to slap on a greatsword so they can SPIN TO WIN like everyone else he’s seen with a big ol’ sword, and be surprised and confused as to why they’re shooting laser beams instead. Likewise, a new engineer is going to wonder why his SNIPOR RIFUL has a 1000-range auto and does most of its damage at point-blank range. The weapons are good at what they do, they’re just used very differently from the stereotypical greatsword or rifle.

BTW I’m not saying the rifle’s perfect, 3 and 5 can be crazy laggy and 1 still feels lackluster even with added piercing. I still like the idea of an inverted “longbow” effect, where it deals bonus damage at closer ranges. That would add some much-needed damage to the rifle and also make it VERY CLEAR that this is a “melee” weapon.

Idea how to reward both hardcore and casual players

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Haette.2701

Haette.2701

If they add a hard mode, it should reward no tokens at all and just give progress on a special title track. Bosses might have new and more tricks, or just plain new bosses.

This would be ONLY for people who are truly in it for the challenge. The gear will continue being relatively difficult but accessible to the majority of players, while adding something for the upper echelon to strive for.

The flaw in their logic is that how long they think dungeons should take to complete and how long they actually take can be very different. The fact is that some dungeon content does not take an hour to complete or even close.

Honestly, bosses are probably too easy to last. Once you “get” their trick or two they’re just a giant sack of meat to beat on for 5-10 minutes. Graveyard zerging is just stupid and needs to go. Put a door before each boss and a waypoint just outside that door.

My only real complaint is when the trash comes in giant packs that all have CC, or when a mob has some kind of rapid-fire CC. There’s not much you can do against that sheer volume of roots/fears/knockdowns even if they do have good telegraphing, which they often don’t.

To everyone complaining about mobs being immune to CC, very few are totally immune, usually giants. If everyone in the group fires a stun/daze/knockback at the same time, everything else WILL get disabled, and you can even blow off their Unshakeable stacks ahead of time so you can get by with just the last important one. If anything, pure CC builds are OP in dungeons, while glass cannon and tanky are underperforming.

Point is, Engineer is meant to be the techy-long range class, but it constantly forces us into a dangerous melee range.

After carefully perusing our weapon skills, I’m pretty confident in saying that we are NOT meant to be a long-range class. If we were, we’d probably have a long-range weapon. If you say “guns should be long-range,” I’m going to point to the mesmer’s greatsword again, and then maybe to the guardian’s staff. At worst we’re short-range, at best we’re whatever the hell range we want because we have some absurd range control.

Honestly, if people are rolling their way through the whole dungeon with a static build I think that’s the thing that needs fixing, not the opposite. Countering your opponent is half the battle.

The only one that REALLY bugs me is Elixir U, with the crippling downside you can’t prepare for and the anti-ranged wall that fails 1/3 of the time. All the others are so minor that I can’t bring myself to care, the base elixir is still useful and the toolbelt skill is still a decent buff and Cleaning Formula/HGH delivery system.

Changing Elixirs in Combat.

Haette.2701

Elixirs are TOO situation and too random. Other classes can find a set up of skills that let them tackle most situations, but for an Engineer to be efficient we need to change our elixirs before every fight.
In certain places, this isn’t possible, such as WvW and in Dungeons.
This makes us pretty kitten useless.

It’s hard to explain, but you’ll understand if you try an Engineer to Lv30 at least.

Cool assumptions, bro. I change my whole BUILD multiple times per dungeon and tweak it often in WvW. We’re allowed to do that for a reason.

For the record, I do think that a couple elixirs could use a bit of normalization, particularly the thrown ones. Regen is nowhere near as valuable as vigor or protection. I don’t want a @#$%ing stealth wall, I want a bullet-stopping wall. I don’t care how nice chaos armor is.

Rocket Boots’s flight distance is affected by roots and slows, and it doesn’t remove conditions until -after- it launches the user. This includes cripple, chill, immobilize, and other launches (particularly the Elixir Gun’s leap), all of which affect a skill designed to counter them.

Rocket Boots !!!

in Engineer

Posted by: Haette.2701

Haette.2701

The only thing broken about Rocket Boots is that it removes cripple/chill/immobilize AFTER it launches you, instead of before. That makes it a terrible idea to use on those conditions because you go nowhere, and now your lesser CC is a knockdown.

Fix that and it’ll be borderline OP.

Being efficient in dungeons means less reward?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Haette.2701

Haette.2701

If a player runs every single path in every dungeon once, and only once, and exploit/bug-free, but back to back, then DR should absolutely never kick in.

Ever.

Bugs aside, this is the only real problem I have here. The cross-dungeon DR is especially stupid because the other 7 dungeons aren’t getting me any closer to a reward for that first dungeon. If I have time after a few dungeon runs to farm some karma, I can do that without penalty, so why isn’t the same thing true if I choose to instead run a -different- dungeon? They’re totally separate reward tracks, why would they even interact like that? That’s like if I managed to legitimately hit the dungeon DR, but when I go to do events that same DR carries over into my event rewards. It makes no sense.

I feel like this whole problem is just people getting spoiled by the big fat first reward. If they just set dungeons to give 5 tokens per run with no DR whatsoever, people would still farm all day, and they wouldn’t kitten about DR because their reward is ALWAYS small (they’d probably kitten about small rewards instead). But suddenly a much larger portion of the population has little hope of ever seeing dungeon gear. That sucks for way more people than this system does.

Engineer swiftness in combat

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Haette.2701

Haette.2701

That’s not swiftness, it’s the Slick Shoes toolbelt skill Super Speed. It’s 5 seconds of “out of combat with swiftness” speed, even in combat. It says it gives double, but that’s only accurate when in combat. Out of combat it’s equal to swiftness.

Swiftness works in combat for everyone, it increases your speed by 33%. Your base speed is just lower, so the total bonus isn’t as big as it is out of combat.

I would prefer if this boss had a waypoint outside the door, and the door was closed during the fight. This would accomplish:

1). Take out graveyard zerging from certain paths.
2). GW1 style fight where you had to go at it until you wiped, and couldn’t trickle people back in.
3). Remove the 5-minute journeys of empty passageways when people have to waypoint back.

I think this would make the encounter a lot more fun without really changing the difficulty.

I’m a little surprised this isn’t already a thing with every dungeon boss. Removing the downtime after failure is one of the single best things you can do to cut down on frustration, without actually making the fight any easier.

I can’t speak for flamethrower builds, but vulnerability from grenade builds is absolutely huge. I typically maintain 15-20 stacks at full spam, which is 15-20% more damage—great solo, even better for groups.

That’s a different trait doing that. It’s pretty nuts, yeah.

That trait is actually also where I got the mistaken 5-second figure, thank you for catching that. It’s still a far better boost than it’s being credited simply by having a duration at all, and -especially- because it helps the whole team.

Flamethrower and Firearms Gotchas - Wasting Major Traits

in Engineer

Posted by: Haette.2701

Haette.2701

Your math is based in wrong assumptions. You’d be right if it increased the damage of -only- the very next hit by 1%, but it’s a vuln stack. You’re buffing ALL of your hits for the next 5 seconds, PLUS those of anyone else who happens to be hitting it. Any crappy flamethrower spec (aka mine with my crap gear) is spewing stacks like candy, and even one stack equals Sitting Duck over time. More often than not it’s 2-3 stacks. For the whole group. Sitting Duck is for assassin builds or when you aren’t putting out the sheer volume of crits that a flamer does.

I also think Incendiary Powder is better than you give it credit for, but you make a good point on the chunk of stats you can get without it.

It may improve a bit, but you have to remember that boss size and the… dynamicness… of their fights are an inverse relationship, and the difference in scale here is off the charts. You’re -never- going to fight one of the elder dragons head-to-head. They’re at least a mile long, and nothing man-portable is going to do a kitten thing to them until some asura invents us up a big ol’ bag of Dr. D. E. Machina’s All-Purpose Phlebotinum Bombs.

The best you can do at that point is a break-the-shield-generators boss with artillery firing in the background, or pull some Gurren Lagann shiz and look stupid as hell because your game is not Gurren Lagann. Even the dragon lieutenants are too big to be a fair fight, so instead they get to stand directly in front of your ultra-particle-mutilator and yell and summon things until it’s charged up. To Anet’s credit, the fights LOOK amazing, but they kinda shot themselves in the foot as far as mechanics go.
