Hi guys,
how we may stop this general hate towards our class
and the QQ drama that is always present in our forums?

any ideeas? (i saw the thief nerfing streak stopped since 2 patches ago so this is good news i guess)

Maybe that should tell you, all other thief fans and the devs something….

I have never seen more thieves in WVW. And thats a lot of thieves.

I remember when the game first started the the devs philosophy was that they would not play whack-a-mole with profession balancing. I think the engineer is a fine example of how this philosophy has failed. Im tired of getting cut down in less then a second by thieves or skipping over a traits bc its not useable. Its time to let the pendulum swing. The engineers who are from what I can tell a very loyal to the profession have never “had their time”…..like many other professions that have been a little more viable and powerful since launch.

btw im mainly speaking about wvw where i feel we are viable but not feeling the impact as a Mesmer or thief. Just an example. I can only speak from this view point bc this is mainly what i play.

This is meant to generate discussion among engineers. What are your thoughts on balancing with this profession so far? Be calm and state your point. We are 9 months in to the game.

Broken stuff all through our profession, and the ONE time something breaks in our favor and THAT is what they fix. Try not to be so obvious that you don’t care about the people playing Engies, but only about the people playing AGAINST engies in PvP.

Id have to say im not sure how there is always this sudden quickness to fix bugs like this(yes I admit it) but then cant fix out traits, skills, etc in months. These bugs seem to never give them a problem when coding or whatever like everything else……

I hate to break this to you but I remember the devs saying somewhere that grenades are still too strong. It was on a state of the game video i think.

This is the build im using in wvw right now and I like it a lot. Its in no way perfect but it fits my play style.

The build is condition based and is centered around condition damage with pistols/bombkit and elixirs for survivability. Bomb kit imo is more about condition damage and duration than direct damage. The reason I use Carrion is for a good amount of health which I think I have around 24,000. Elixirs are going to add to your survivability and let you push a little deeper into an enemy group without dying. Most of my traits are self explanatory.

1-5 P/P Most of the P/P skills are aoe. Even your #1 skill which is great for large fights. With coated bullets from the right distance you can get a double hit for added damage.

6 Elixir H. Just my personal favorite you can use whatever you want here.

7 Bomb Kit. If you can pull off a good Concussion Bomb into a group you will see why i like this build. Follow it up with static shot or vice versa.

8 Elixir R. I saw you said something about not wanting to use this but 4 dodge rolls is hard to pass up.

9 Elixir S. Again another life saver. These elixirs will let you do more with the bomb kit imo.

10. Supply Crate of course :P

I also use food which is Rare Veggie Pizza and Master Tuning Crystal.

The damage will seem very low but the conditions will make up for that. I dont find there are too many problems I cant handle with this build. The only thing I dislike about it is the lack of swiftness. Im not an amazing player but I dont die too often in WvW either. If you have any questions let me know.

10,000+ damage steal then cloak and dagger in a 2 hit move in less than half a second and didnt see them at all. Not exactly fair.

Well I haven’t read any of this. All I know is that for some odd reason from BW1 to present thieves are still the only profession I cant counter……hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I would think the best possible way to deal with this is release a new currency that doesn’t drop as often but make it so you can trade your badges of honor in for the new currency at a 10:1 rate or whatever A-net decides the drop rate to be. This will make it so the people playing WvW this whole time could actually use the thousands of badges they saved.

That would be good. I wasnt sure if there was any word on how this is going to happen when it does come out.

We use existing mechanics like player kills and event completions to award world XP, but it is an entirely new system with new pieces of data associated to it so unfortunately there’s no way to award retroactive progress.

EDIT: I should have mentioned that once this system is live, everyone will have access to both this new system and the existing achievement titles.

We will be keeping all the existing WvW achievement tracks and titles associated with them, along with the progress you have already obtained on those achievements. None of that stuff is going away, so you can still keep working on those original achievement tracks and titles (which are intended to be extremely rare and obtained over years of play).

Sorry I didn’t make that clearer in my original post, we will have a blog post coming out before the patch explaining this new system in greater detail!

This amazes me. Anyone who mostly plays WvW is probably poor and now also cant even get a title from spending hours and hours in WvW based on past gameplay. How rewarding!!!!!!!!

People hate the Engineer for the following. Im now included in this hate for the engineer.

No damage.

Useless skills.

No versatility.

An elite that other professions can get the same utility from regular non-elite skills.

Pointless builds. Tankcat might be fun but not when you can’t contribute due to pathetic damage.

Not good at anything in particular.

And the list goes on. Ive played the Engineer almost exclusively from release and I feel like all that time has been wasted. Makes you either want to reroll or quit the game all together.

I was playing wvw just now and was at the top of a tower shooting my pistol one skill at a guardian. He /laugh and just stood there taking the damage. Pathetic.

When I play WvW I rarely die. When I do its 9 out of 10 times by a thief. Ive racked up 783 hours and 11,140 wvw kills on my engineer and can handle all professions but this one. It doesnt really make sense. Anyone else finding this to be a problem? Btw, im not going to use a certain skill or weapon just to counter a single profession. Thats ridiculous.

Usually the fight goes like this…Im down. Or I just never see them in order to counter them while they keep hitting me. If I do get their health low enough they easily run off.

So let me know what your experience has been with this. Thanks

I would like a kit that can be used when I’m not the only Engi in hotjoin sPvP. I call it the “No kittenin Way” kit. Automatically equips when within range of another engineer. Once equipped, the skills would be as follows;
Skill 1- Puts a party hat on anyone within 1500 range
Skill 2- Lays out a delicious cake
Skill 3- Pours out some refreshing punch for everyone to indulge in
Skill 4- Gives the other engineer a gift. Opening the gift applies the engineer with a buff that guarantees the next 3 flamethrower attacks will not ‘missmissmissmissmiss’ or be ‘obstructed’
Skill 5- Creates 3 turrets that automatically fly towards the closest opponent and blow up for roughly 80% of the enemy’s health. It’s a rare occurrence that 2 engineers be in the same hotjoin match at the same time, so let’s celebrate by letting you feel like the 7 mesmers that are currently in the match, if only for a minute.

Any input on this idea would be greatly appreciated!

Engineer

The Engineer is a highly versatile class. While it doesn’t have the long range capabilities of the Ranger, or the melee capabilities of the Warrior or Guardian, they are comfortable at medium ranges in most fights. They have a lot of control, and use their boons to keep themselves (and allies) alive in a fight. They can use different kits based on the situation, but this extreme versatility comes at a cost in damage on their main hand weapons.

We see the elementalist as the king of versatility. The skill ceiling for the Ele is exceptional, as the ability to leverage all four attunements at the right time is crucial for understanding the elemetnalist. The Ele boasts some of the best team support and control abilities in the game, as well as some great area of effect damage.

So basically versatility is both their “thing”, except that ANet recognizes that Engi’s sacrifice damage for versatility whereas Ele’s have phenomenal AoE damage. So are they using the higher skill ceiling for Eles as a legit reasoning for making Engineers an inferior class??

It says we’re highly versatile but Eles are KINGS. Basically you are correct. I love my Engineer and will not quit. However if I had read these descriptions at launch(were they even available?) than I would have not rolled an engineer. I’m still glad I stuck with it.

Id like to see an all engineer guild. Has anyone considered this or started one already? We seem to be a minority group that for some reason sticks with the profession no matter what. I think it would be fun.

I have a fully geared ele and engi (mesmer also) and out of the 2 I can safely say that the engineer has a way higher skill cap. My d/d ele does the same face roll rotation because its so effective, even if the target dodges and blocks some of it. It is just so much pressure with a mix of condition and high physical damage. The fall back to it all is popping into earth for free 33% damage mitigation and then immediately to water to cleanse all conditions and heal up without even needing to press 6.

Anyone who says ele is hard or has a high skill cap has clearly never played one. It is the only class I have played where I can confidently jump into a group of 10 people and wreck most of them, while retaining the ability to escape laughing when ever I want (without stealth or culling saving me).

This is what I think everytime I see a D/D ele in WvW, it cant be that hard with the same rotation everytime even if you have to mix it up slightly given the situation. Even if you kitten up severely you can practice bc you always get away. I have a feeling that the get-a ways and heals for the ele are on there way to a nerfing.

I play a lot of WvW. I rarely die but when I do its 95% of the time by a thief. What usually happens is this…Im kicking kitten im down. Out of no where within a second or 2 im down without ever seeing them. Is this a culling issue? Or do thieves get to stay in stealth constantly with no problems?

Its a simple build but really reliable and has condition removal with Elixir C. HGH for stacking might. Running full Power/precision/crit gear. And I use the sigil that gives you 10 precision up to 25 stakes. Almost all my hits crit.

If I toss Elixir S and get stealth, I net shot them when im right up to them, then blunderbuss, double jump shot, overcharged shot. This does tons of damage.

When I want to stomp someone and don’t want to be interrupted, I use elixir S. This is fun because there’s nothing they can do to stop me(in most cases). For some reason I never see engineers do this.

I like the idea of no stealth capping. The part about stealth and finishing someone I disagree with. Other professions have ways of finishing someone without a problem.

Just played 15min of WvW and watched 20 people try to cap a supply camp while a thief just kept using whatever it is that makes them constantly stealth. Im confused I thought this was a skill based game. 20 people dropping random aoes everywhere to try and take him out does not seem skill based. Anyways he did this for 10min before their zerg came and wiped everyone out. Is arenanet going to address this or not?

One way to fix this would be when all the npcs are wiped out make the cap point smaller like in spvp. This way since nothing is wrong with thieves apparently(kidding), all those random skill based aoes wont go to waste.

Btw why am I even coming up with ways to fix WvW because of one class? I wonder…

This is nice and good but Arenanet and devs should know this is a business. They are already suppose to forecast and know the needs of the customer then place resources accordingly. Not doing so results in angry lash outs like we’ve been seeing. People in this forum have been leaving plenty of feedback in a nice manner so it’s not really a surprise that they are a little upset after nothing they care about was dealt with.

Jon Peters says, “There are >500 skills in this game, 480 traits, and 2 designers working on this.” Now does that sound like enough people to make significant changes for every patch? I don’t think you need to go to Harvard to figure this one out.

b) Engineers’ PvP burst is high and mostly ranged AoE. Yes, an engineer can burst higher than a warrior in many circumstances. Concurrent to this burst is a CC chain in which the opponent can do nothing to avoid damage short of invulnerability or block (preemptive stability or reflect can work also, but must be applied prior to the first CC). Obviously you need to be 80 and be in full exotics to burst effectively. Properly geared, you are looking at a 20-25k burst/cc chain in 5-6 seconds which can be extended to ~10 seconds for 35-40k damage, but you’d have to use an elite skill to do so.

If you want to learn how to play a class, leave your ego at the door and ask for advice. You’d get far more out of it that way.

In the earlier threads there is a lot of complaining about the engineer being a weak class. We just got tired of talking about it.

I see people saying we’re a support class. What warrior, thief, ele or any class for that matter feels that we’re a necessary part of any group. They can take care of themselves.

My comment comes from the way that so many kits and utilities fulfill essentially the same function.

Now, individually, I find that each utility seems fine.

However, when you look at them as a whole, I see that they aren’t really that fine.

For example, nearly 100% of the engineer works best at close range.

Rifle- Melee range works best. Blunderbuss, net shot and jump shot all work best at a short range. Overcharged shot also has quite a short range.

Pistols- Might not seem it, but poison darts needs a close range to be efficient, and offhand pistol and off hand shield both work best at a close and melee range.

Tool kit- Pretty obvious. Its a melee kit exclusively.

Flamethrower- Again, its close/melee range.

Bomb kit- Dropped at feet, with an explosion radius akin to melee attacks. Yep, another melee kit.

Elixir gun- Not so much this one, but fumigate does require a melee range. Acid bomb too, but that is a gap creator too, so it works.

Grenade kit- Lets not delude ourselves here. The targeting and flight path situation means that anything above a 600 range, is pretty hard to hit.

Why does the engineer need 95% of his kits and weapons to work best at melee? I don’t see why.

Another thing I’ve noticed. Look at some stun breakers. We have 4, quite a lot for a class. Why do we need 4? Elixir S gives 3s of invuln. That’s fine. Elixir R gives two guaranteed dodges, that’s pretty much 3s of evade right there. Rocket boots creates huge distance.

I suppose that their toolbelt skills are quite different, but do we really need 4 stun breakers?

In turrets too.

Flame turret gives burning in an AoE fashion. Trouble is, rocket turret also burns in an AoE fashion, with more DD damage.

Why do we need two turrets that do AoE burning? Ideally, they should make the rocket turret do some other condition and have some other effect.

There isn’t really much reason to take a flame turret currently. If you want a smoke combo field, bomb kit is much better.

I really think that some skills need to be changed up. Not in some short term wanting, but in the long term, because, to be frank, needing 7 short range weapon options is about as needed as needing a buff on the grenade kit.

You are absolutely right. Engineers need some long range options. You would think something called a Mortar would have a good distance. Its starting to feel that we’re less of an engineer profession and more of a close range skirmisher type.

1 day matches were fun but if they wanted to perma 1 day amtches the upgrades and siege needs to be a bit cheapr for that, paying a gold for a waypoint to have for a few hours isn’t worth it in a way, same goes for 37s wall upgrades.

3 days would sound good too, and still, cheaper upgrades to make them more viable for the shorter matches, these upgrades were made thinking of a two week system. 3 day actually sounds great that should be around the time you normally have a good idea who is going to win anyways.

And at that point servers start going perma outmanned. I like this 3 day idea.

3 days would be perfect. And its true about the perma outmanned.

It is obviously numbers. Yaks already showed Friday night that with the same man power as SoR and GoM we would dominate. Yaks could easily be high ranking with more ppl.

Im running a glass cannon build. Power/Precision/Crit damage. So I do take a good amount of damage but not like this. I would even understand if it wasn’t an auto attack #1 skill.

And I don’t think its crazy to get good damage with grenade barrage. Ive crit twice for 10k and once for 11k. I doubt hip shot would ever get near that.

14,718 damage? Got hit with a fireball for 14,718 damage. I don’t think in an engineers wildest dreams we could ever do that much damage. Not even with a glass cannon build using Grenade Barrage at point blank range.

This isnt just necros having this problem. I play a lot of WvW and I see every profession being taken out by a thief with ease. They will even run into a big group take someone down within a few seconds and run out.
