After reading these forums for quite a while, i couldn’t belive the things I’m reading.
Thread name : ‘’I suck at dodging’’
Some guy starts complaining that dodging is too hard for him…. WHAT IN THE GODS NAME?

This is not the only thread, there’s TONS of them. What is wrong with you guys? Can’t you just enjoy this simple game?

The author of the thread you cited was asking for help, not complaining. Asking for help is one of the purposes of an internet game forum. You thought it was OK to cite his thread as an example of complaining even though you did not even bother to read the short OP?

I'm not good at Dodging.

I find an easy dodge to be in Kessex Hills, underwater, Krait Nimross. They lead off with a spear cast that does a stun, and moves at about the speed I’d expect a spear to move. There’s none of the long wind-ups you see with ettin charge-ups, and once you get the timing down the first time it’s easy to replicate. There’s also a lot of them in Viathan Arm, and you can also get UW Kills at the same time.

Guild Wars 1 had plenty of RNG. Voltaic spear, celestial compass, frog scepter, there were many many items that people farmed or tried to aquire. In all the times I ran Bogroots growth, I NEVER got a Frog Scepter and I ran it hundreds of times. Sure you could buy one for 150k, but don’t say that the RNG wasn’t there. It was. You ignored it.

And you can ignore it here just the same. I do.

Well this is only partially correct. At least in GW1 people knew where to go to farm particular items. GW2 is a mess in that department. You have to look no further than the thread about chickens dropping better loot than dragons to see how kittened up loot drops in GW2 are.

I’ll challenge that assumption. If people are farming cores, they seem to know where to go; if they’re farming T6 Mats, they seem to know where to go; if they’re farming rares, they seem to know where to go. I see references all the time to farming X at spot y. Their complaints are not about not knowing where to farm, they are about kitten-poor drop rates and DR.

Ascended Items are against variate builds

I wonder if the stat combinations on Ascended Items are not a back-door nerf to extreme builds — glass cannons and bunkers. If people want “more” stats with the Ascended items, they have to accept losing some of their “favored” stats which they can stack with exotics.

Nope quite the contrary, each iteration of ascended item so far in-game has come with both berserker and soldier stat prefixes. Soldier prefixes make for pretty tanky characters and berserker gear is the main gear set glass cannons run. If anything so far ascended gear has been funneling people into playing these play-styles over others.

Interesting, and thank you. I guess I can throw my tinfoil hat away.

Loot drops are’nt about what you can equip on that particular toon necessarily, its about where else it can be used.. on an alt or on someone elses toon via the TP….
How many items do you think one toon needs / carries / uses… such a narrow opinion tbh.. there is more than one reason to loot anything in game

I was asking a question, not expressing an opinion.

Where Chickens Drop Better Loot Than Dragons

I didn’t know chicken farming was a thing. I knew about just general mob farming around Orr, but do chickens drop more than any other Orrian mob?

No, they seem to have the same drop tables as all other mobs in Orr — which means that since there are a lot more mobs in Orr, and a lot more risen chickens, than there are dragons… Oh, and there’s a chance (1 in 3?) that when a risen chicken blows up on death, a Risen Maggot will spawn, which also has a chance to drop items.

The current durations, effectiveness and CD’s of the skills that provide threat gain, aggro dump, and survivability in GW2 are balanced around small group play and challenges balanced around small groups. Increased challenge in a larger group would likely require re-balancing those skills. Unless skills were to be split into “raid” and normal PvE versions, the rebalanced skills would break smaller group or solo content every bit as much as raid gear made “normal” content trivial in a classic MMO.

Laurels. Thoughts?

IndigoSundown.5419

Everyone who is complaining about “grinding” laurels or concerned about losing dailies and taking longer to get the amulet should sit down and reflect on the following question:

How will obtaining an Ascended amulet improve my in-game experience?

Ascended gear was put in to be a goal. It should not seem strange that when a company adds an incentive to a game, people want it — that’s why developers create incentives in the first place. Needing the stats is irrelevant.

And yes, I read the rest of your post. What you did not take into consideration is the power of want.

Oh, I completely understand the power of want. Truth be told, I will likely be purchasing my Ascended amulet on day 20 as well (unless I CBA to do 5 dungeons by then). However, I also enjoy the game and was logging in almost daily pre-laurels. For me, the power of want means I might play a few extra nights and I adjust my play style to add in some underwater kills and crafting.

On the other hand, it seems that several people in this thread have surpassed the power of want and submitted to the power of compulsion. As soon as someone is submitting to multiple hours of “grindy” and otherwise un-fun gameplay just to see some new shiny pixels, that person should consider whether the time investment for the reward is really worth it (IMO, it is not as discussed above).

By compulsion you mean entitlement? ;P That’s what an awful lot of it seems like to me.

I’m pretty sure that you and the poster you quoted are not talking about the same thing.

Complaints about Laurels/Ascended gear.

Everyone has been waiting for this new Ascended gear for awhile now.

Its now released. Usually when something is released it is immediately available for use.

This is not the case and I fins it very strange. Dangling amulets in front of everyones face for 3 weeks and having no other way to get it but 1 laurel day by day.

Thats where the problem is. Bad idea in my opinion. New items should be available the day they are released.

In other MMO’s, at least some of the BiS gear drops from raid bosses. So, say the gear piece “you” want drops from Boss X — along with 5-6 other things — but he only drops 2 per kill. It didn’t drop? Too bad. It dropped? Great. Now, how many in the raid want it? Just you? Congratulations! Others do, too? Is your group using DKP or RNG rolls? Now, are you lucky? Do you have more DKP? You are, or do? It’s yours. In other words, if you pass all those hurdles, the item is yours. If not, come back next week, with no guarantee you’ll get it then either.

So, of the two time gates, which would you rather have?

I’m pretty sure that no time gate is what you are asking for. However, that is not a good idea for any game’s longevity.

These people that say an hour to do a daily? That is a flat out lie unless you are not even putting effort into doing it.

That’s an over-the-top statement, considering you have no way of knowing what zone the player is in, what server, and most importantly what zone they are in. Sure, you can find lots of everything in the beginner zones, but what about those who are in the mid-zones? Good luck finding 5 Vets, say, in Bloodtide Coast in any kind of time frame unless you’ve memorized the zone. Maybe some folks don’t want to have to go to WFF or QD to complete the daily. That just might be part of the complaints about having to go out of your way to finish them.

I don’t have a problem with doing the new dailies, but I do see both sides of the issue. People do not have to be lying if they say it took them longer to do a daily than your daughter, they just have to be playing elsewhere.

That can be solved with a thief.

There IS one time I miss a dedicated healer in GW2. That’s in a Group Event when the Champion decides it hates me, and only me, and nothing seems to change its mind.

Never underestimate the ability of a watchful mesmer, engineer, or thief to help you drop aggro if needed.

Mesmer has multiple stealth options… engineer has smoke fields… and thief has stealth options AND smoke field.

In a team if pressure is getting too much for you and you need to drop aggo… count on your partner for one. Even 3 seconds of stealth can help you get your cooldowns under control and get you back into the fight.

So, what y’all are saying is that instead of a pocket healer, I needed a pocket thief, engineer or mesmer? (looks around at group at the time) Nope, nothing like that either, just a ranger who was not carrying anything useful for taking aggro. At least he raised me the times I was out of healing, out of dodge, out of room to maneuver, and kitten out of luck.

WvW should also have their own Monthly achievements. Hardcore WvW players don’t want to PvE, and visa versa.

But even if you gave choice, people would still complain because not every choice would fit into their playstyle. When it comes to things like this, you need to have some sort of challenging aspect to it otherwise the rewards are just handed.

I support choice. Yes, WvW hardcores should have a WvW monthly and a WvW mapping achievement as well.

Yes, there will always be complaints (witness the recent issues in dailies). Still, offering choices rather than “Do this whole list” might lessen the number of complaints, and would be inclusive of more players — both of which I believe to be “good things.”

Challenge is also good, but it’s tricky. How challenging are 100 events, 5 dailies or 500 salvage? Some might say that all 3 of those reqs are just time-in-game gates. Given some of the advice given to anti-dungeon complaints, 5 dungeon paths is not a challenge either — to those who do them regularly — nor was 50 WvW kills.

Challenge is subjective, too. Those 5o WvW kills were a pain in the kitten for me when I did them. This was because my server held nothing for months, and was always badly outnumbered. “Run with the zerg and you’ll be done in no time!” You can’t run with a zerg if there is no zerg.

Dailies and Monthlies are meant to pull people away from their normal routines to experience the rest of the game.

If you don’t like it, don’t do them.

The reward for completing those achievements are meant for flexible players who want to enjoy the game’s entirety. If you won’t do this, then you’re simply excluded from the reward.

I am not complaining about the dungeon req, but I don’t believe this is correct, either. Achievements are something to do. The biggest problem MMO’s have is providing enough to do to keep players playing. Trying to entice people into things they’d rather cut an arm off than do is not going to fit that bill.

I think that eventually ANet will offer alternative paths to the monthly achievement, just as they’ve announced they will do for dailies. Why? Because they will realize it is better to keep as many players busy as possible.

Until and unless they do, though, the monthlies are what they are.

Many of them are too big now. They used to look like if they really were humans turned into risen form, now every of them is like 2,5 meters tall, which isn’t so realistic as it was before. Also the abominations became oversized, so now it’s like you kill 5-10 meters tall hulk with no more effort than half-meter grubs. I’d say now it’s rather funny.

That’s true for the regular abominations. However, this provided me a false sense of confidence that lead me to challenge a veteran abomination somewhere near Josifats camps that seemed nearly as tough as one of those giants. Therfore, I consider the too weak abominations a dirty trick meant to lure me to my doom by means of greed for an easy loot drop…

All Abominations have Frenzy, If you don’t kill them quickly, their attack speed and damage goes up … a lot. Vets of course take longer to kill…

I also have concerns about the crafting daily, although I am not sure how it works precisely as I have not run into the problem of all professions being maxed. Will it count if you continue to make Jute Cloth or something equally cheap if it no longer provides you with skill-ups? If not, and I am sure there are people out there, how do they complete this daily without crafting with seriously expensive materials? More of a theoretical concern, I suppose.

Once you’ve maxed crafting, even top tier mats don’t get you experience and a skill-up. I’ve crafted copper ingots and gotten credit even when I got no “experience” or skill up for doing so. This means the game is counting the making of the material, not the experience gained for doing so.

Should be renamed “Weekly”.

To be fair, those of us who have it already, or are on the cusp, probably play a lot more than the average player. My buddy plays about three hours a night, five nights a week and ain’t anywhere close to finishing.

I’m not saying that it’s necessarily a bad thing that something requires less time to complete. I mean, nobody likes to ‘feel forced’ into doing something over an extended amount of time and considering the value of laurels, I’d say most people feel more than compelled to complete monthly.

I just find it odd that people have been able to complete what is supposed to be a time sink in 5 days. It’s like A-net is trying to create habitual routines in their players by providing daily and monthly incentives, but fail in doing so.

I’m not sure it is a time sink. It’s rather more like a mechanic to get people to try different things. I think it’s setting the bar low enough that a player playing for a below-average amount of time per month can still get the achievement. This of course means that those who play many hours per day get done “early.”

Daily Dodge Req is Mandating Poor Play

IndigoSundown.5419

I believe that if you don’t dodge at least a couple dozen hits a day then you’re playing this game very very wrong.

I believe you should read the original post instead of skimming it and trying to summarize (incorrectly) what it’s about.

Again, it’s not a matter of difficulty, it’s a matter of proper education. If you’re trying to teach players how to dodge using this daily (which is fair enough), then the game needs to properly recognize all forms of dodging and avoidance. Not just evasion.

I agree with you and the OP. That said, the “evade” proc is something that the game can recognize and count. More importantly, the evade proc was already in the game, so relatively little programming would have been required to incorporate it into a daily. They couldn’t just have the dodge daily update any time you dodge roll, as this would be easily exploitable. I suspect that in order to accommodate your suggestion, they would have to reprogram the evade proc itself to be more broadly applicable. I have no idea whether that would be easily doable.

Conclusion: 45 minutes is way too small of a window to be statistically significant given the pre-MF drop rate. If I were designing a study, I’d have to incorporate lengthy play-sessions over weeks to obtain statistically significant results.

Actually I agree with wasabi. Maybe a little longer on events. but not by much if you’re just doing speed events. For example I know where all events are in queensdale. So I can waypoint hop quick. If Barthol event is available the starter is right next to the waypoint. I can /map Barthol event, start it, and hit one of the centaurs when he moves out. As long as there’s another person or two that responds to what I said in map that’s all I need. I can waypoint out and move on to another event – let the other players finish that event off. This can be said for pretty much every event. You don’t have to stay and do the whole event if you know other players will finish it up.

le sigh How to speed run dynamic events. Whatever floats your boat I guess. If I ever find myself thinking this way, I will realize that I am not enjoying the game, and I will move on.

I really enjoy the game. I just like getting the daily out of the way so I don’t forget about it. So I get it done quickly and just move on to doing whatever floats my boat at the time. Dynamic events aren’t something I really like about the game. I’ve probably done 95% of the dynamic events, a lot of them MANY times. Same thing with underwater kills and crafting. I don’t enjoy either so I get them out of the way. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the game.

Heck even daily dodge I probably wouldn’t get done through normal play except on days I do WvW. In PVE my main is a fully ranged thief and I use lifesteal food to sustain life. I don’t need to dodge anything except in rare cases. I’ve got so much sustain with dual pistol spam and high crit that the pitiful damage things do (when they rarely hit me) doesn’t matter.

But none of this matters. My post was just stating that I agreed that daily is very quick, and pointed out examples of how it can be done quickly for those that want to get it out of the way.

Maybe other people want to play normal then when they know they’re going to log soon see what’s left to do if anything. If there’s anything left on daily, maybe they’ll want to rush it and the info I gave are examples of how to do so.

Didn’t mean it to sound like an attack on you, so if you took it that way, sorry. I just get tired of speed runs in MMO’s. I guess my age is showing.

What does it tell you if people are getting upset because you delayed their completion of a daily requirement by a few seconds to a minute?

Least friendly MMO out there?

I didn’t find WoW to be any friendlier. At least question wise. Whenever someone asked something there, the first few answers were almost always… well less than helpful.
There certainly was more activity in the chats in WoW, that’s for sure. But I’ve always gotten an answer in GW2 chats if I had something to ask. And whenever some group event starts, it’s very often informed in the map chat, even without having to ask if there was any events going on in that particular map.
The only other MMO I have experience in, besides this and WoW, is Star Wars: Old Republic. Now that was a quiet game. The chats in GW2 are much livelier than I ever saw in SW:TOR.

My short time in SW, chat was anything but quiet. This was right after it went F2P, and chat was non-stop sub players going on about free players as if they were serial killers of kittens. At least we don’t have that divide in GW2.

On the subject as a whole, it very much depends on where I am, and when, and chat can range from non-existent to constant.

Is AoE actually a problem? - Discussion Thread

Despite seeing valid arguments from both sides, and having a hard time siding with any particular one view in this thread, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s not AoE that is the problem, but a lack of AoE balance between all classes that is.

If everyone had the same AoE an ele did (or even close), I think it would be a different story. But that’s sorta kinda the point of the Ele class anyways (to be an AoE heavy caster), so hear me out before you bite my head off.

AoE-wise comparison only:
Compare Ranger Longbow to Warrior Longbow…. warrior is a better ranger hands down.. ground targeted AoEs, a good burst skill, the warrior just wins there.
Compare Thief Shortbow to Ranger Shortbow…. again the ranger loses in terms of sheer AoE.

Okay enough hating on rangers….
Compare Thief dagger versus Warrior GS/sword/hammer/whatever…. warrior cleave AoE (even though it’s melee it still effects an area) wins, no contest there. Why do you think we have 4 warrior 1 mesmer groups for dungeons? Have you seen a 4 thief 1 mesmer group? It was likely unintentionally organized if you did :P I’m not saying the thief needs a buff, just comparing AoE’s here for perspective.

These are just a few small examples of what is really the big picture, but you all play the game, and you all know as well as I do some AoEs are better than others. I think all classes should have the ability to have at least some decent AoE. I main a Ranger, Thief, and Warrior, and so far the only class from those 3 that I think needs balancing for AoE is the Ranger. You are forced into a trap build for AoE (if you don’t use an axe/torch, which is sub-par for most things anyways compared to shortbow), which is against how this game is said to be designed. There isn’t much freedom in choices there.

So, I read the official posts, and I agree with what they are saying. They need to rebalance things among every class to open up more weapon choices. Hopefully they don’t make things worse in the process, though.

So, rangers can do AoE with traps, and via Barrage on LB. To do so effectively, they have to build for condition damage. This is no different from a Necro, whose Marks are also condition based. The difference, if there is one, is that ranger traps are utilities, which means sacrificing other skills to use them, but leaving plenty of ST options. The Necro’s marks in general do not do quite as much damage as traps, and staff necro’s only ST skill is the auto attack, which does crap for damage and is so slow it is easily avoided just by the target moving.

The current meta has different classes being good at different things. Balancing AoE across all classes would mean the devs would need to balance ST across all classes, or they would be breaking the AoE classes. This would involve a major rework, including skills and traits.
